Italians challenge Renzi job reforms with vast Rome rally

Posted:

Rome (AFP) - Protesters from across Italy descended on Rome Saturday for a vast rally against Prime Minister Matteo Renzis plans to overhaul the job market, in a sign of growing resistance to an ambitious reform drive.Hundreds of thousands of Italians snaked through the capital calling for Renzi to do more to boost employment and protect the rights of new entries to the job market. Organisers put the number of protesters at one million and called on the premier to take note.We want work for everyone, and work with rights. This is a demonstration for those without work, without rights, those who suffer, who have no certainties for the future, Susanna Camusso, head of the CGIL union which called for the demonstration, told the crowds. We are here and were not going away. We will strike, and use all our strength to fight to change this governments policies, she said, announcing the unions would hold another protest on November 8.Renzis measures are not sufficient to change the path Italy is on, she added.Thousands of young people from all over the country waved the red flags of the CGIL, singing the national anthem and letting off flares in front of the Colosseum to oppose to Renzis Jobs Act.He said he wanted to see us and count us. Here we are Renzi, count us a protester in Romes San Giovanni Square yelled into a megaphone.Youth unemployment in the eurozones third largest economy stands at a record 44.2 percent. Those who do manage to find work are often hired on temporary contracts which offer little in the way of security or benefits. We want investments in the future, one young person shouted. Another held up a banner with a sarcastic thanks for the solution to our problems Renzi, and a picture of someone vomiting.- No intention of giving up -We have no intention of giving up. Renzi must know that to change the country, he needs us, those here in the streets of Rome today, said Maurizio Landini, head of the FIOM union, which joined the CGIL protest.Renzis centre-left Democratic Party (PD) is split over the proposed measures, with the deepest division caused by a debate over the future of Article 18, a law which currently protects those who are unfairly dismissed. In his bid to reboot Italys economy and lure in foreign investors, the premier wants to make it easier for companies to fire people and introduce a system by which job protection and benefits are earned by workers over time. But unions and many on the left are furious over the mooted changes and he has been accused of being a Thatcherite -- a term referring to Britains former prime minister Margaret Thatcher, who broke unions and did away with job protections in a single-minded push to liberalise her countrys economy. While Italians are quick to take to the streets to protest, Saturdays rally was the first large demonstration against the PD by the unions, a sign of a fraying of historic ties that bind the two groups. The 39-year-old prime minister was in Florence on Saturday when the demonstration -- which included some rebels from the PD -- took place. He was addressing the Leopolda, an annual meeting he founded in 2009 to bring leaders and the public together to talk about the future of Italy.Renzi sought to minimise any impact the rally might have on policy. I have great respect for the protest, but the era in which protests can block the government and the country are over, he said.Italy narrowly escaped its third recession in the last six years this month thanks mainly to a change in the was economic data was calculated across the European Union. But the country still has forecast a debt-to-GDP ratio of 133.4 percent in 2015 -- more than twice the EU ceiling. The CGIL is protesting against a reform which aims to create work. It is protesting to defend the past, but we want to build a future for our young people, deputy prime minister Angelino Alfano said.

Many Euro-zone banks fail ECB health check:report

Posted:

London (AFP) - Some 25 eurozone banks have failed a health check by the European Central Bank, reports claimed Saturday, citing leaked documents.Nearly one in five of the 130 banks surveyed failed the stress test, the Wall Street Journal and the Daily Telegraph said, ahead of the publication of the official results by the ECB on Sunday. The unprecedented health check of eurozone banks comes before the ECB assumes the role of the blocs banking supervisor next month. The Frankfurt-based institution takes on its new watchdog role on November 4. It hopes that a comprehensive assessment -- made up of a so-called asset quality reviews and a stress test -- will uncover any potentially nasty surprises beforehand.Citing a draft memo seen by Bloomberg, the Telegraph report said only 10 of the 25 banks which failed the stress tests would be told to raise more cash. The failing banks were thought to be in Ireland, Italy, Greece and Austria and will have until November 10 to fill in capital shortfalls, the paper reported. The banks were already given a preliminary indication of their outcome on Thursday. One of the failing banks is being to be the Austrian lender Volksbanken AG, which the countrys Finance Minister Hans Joerg Schelling said was no surprise, as it had already said it would wind itself down.An ECB spokesman said its results had not yet been finalised and dismissed reports in the meantime as speculation. The results will not be final until they are considered by the Governing Council of the bank on Sunday, after which they will be published. Until that time, any media reports on the outcome of the tests are by their nature highly speculative, he said.

Posted:

DUBAI (AFP) - Pakistan took a huge step towards victory in the first Test by taking four key Australian wickets after hundreds from Younis Khan and Ahmed Shehzad put them in the driving seat in Dubai on Satuday. After setting an imposing 438-run target, Pakistan rattled the Australians through a brace of wickets apiece from spinners Zulfiqar Babar and Yasir Shah to leave Australia tottering on 59-4 at stumps on the fourth day, needing six wickets for a 1-0 lead in the two-Test series.Chris Rogers (23) and Steven Smith (three) were at the crease as Australia need another 379 for an unlikely win.Australias best chase to win a Test was way back in 1948 when they made 404-3 against England at Headingley while their best chase against Pakistan was 369-6 at Hobart in 1999.Australia had raced to 44-0 before Babar struck twice in the 14th over, inducing David Warner, who had scored his third successive test century in the first innings, to come out of the crease for a smart stumping when he was on 29 with his first ball and then trapped Alex Doolan (nought) leg before with his last.Michael Clarke survived a review leg-before decision on nought off Shah before trapped in front of the wicket in the leg-spinners next over for three.Shah made it 4-49 catching nightwatchman Nathan Lyon in front of the wicket on a day dominated by Pakistan.Younis hit a record making 103 not out and Shehzad 131 to bolster Pakistan to 286-2 declared.Younis added 168 for the second wicket with Shehzad as Pakistan plundered 248 runs after resuming at 38-0.Younis swept Steve OKeefe to square-leg boundary for his sixth boundary to get to his second hundred in the match following his 106 in Pakistans 454 in the first innings.Australia conceded a big 151-run lead after being dismissed for 303 in their first knock.Younis became the seventh Pakistani batsmen, but first against Australia, to score twin hundreds in a Test.Hanif Mohammad (1964), Javed Miandad (1984), Wajahatullah Wasti (1999), Yasir Hameed (2003), Inzamam-ul Haq (2005) and Mohammad Yousuf (2006) had also achieved the distinction in the past. With his 26th hundred, Younis also edged ahead of Inzamam (25 hundreds) as the highest Test century maker for his country. It was actually Shehzad who set the tone for quick runs in the morning.Shehzad, 22, drove paceman Peter Siddle for his eighth four towards long-on to reach his second Test hundred.Pakistan, 116-1 at lunch, cut loose in the second session against a hapless Australian attack on a flat pitch.Shehzad smashed a four and a six off OKeefe and then hit Mitchell Marsh twice to the ropes to enter the 90s.After reaching his hundred, Shehzad smashed two fours and a six off Siddle to take the lead past 370.He was trapped leg-before soon after tea by spinner OKeefe, the only successful Australian bowler with 2-112.In the morning, Australia had looked to stop the flow of runs and had a good chance of breaking through early, but Brad Haddin failed to grasp a low catch OKeefe when Shehzad edged one on to the pads which popped out of wicketkeepers hands. But OKeefe got his reward when he induced an edge off Ali straight into the hands of Haddin with the score at 71. Ali made 30.Younis hit a six off Lyon and then drove Mitchell Johnson to cover boundary to complete his 29th half-century in Tests, before cutting loose to his hundred. The second and final Test starts in Abu Dhabi on October 30.
