Egypt declares state of emergency in Sinai after bomb attack

Posted:

CAIRO (AFP) - Egypt declared a three-month state of emergency Friday in the north and centre of the Sinai Peninsula after a suicide car bombing killed 30 soldiers, the presidency said. The measures will begin on Saturday at 0300 GMT for a duration of three months, the presidency said in a statement in the wake of the deadliest attack on the security forces since the army deposed Islamist president Mohamed Morsi last year. The decision was also taken to close the Rafah crossing into the Gaza Strip. The army and the police will take all necessary measures to tackle the dangers of terrorism and its financing, to preserve the security of the region... and protect the lives of citizens, the presidential decree said. The decision to invoke a state of emergency came after 30 soldiers were killed and dozens of others wounded in the attack in an agricultural area northwest of El-Arish, the main town in north Sinai. The bombing was carried out by a suspected jihadist who rammed the checkpoint with a vehicle packed with explosives, security officials said.Gunmen also shot dead an officer and wounded two soldiers on Friday at another checkpoint south of El-Arish, security officials said.Since Morsis ouster, more than 1,400 of his supporters have been killed in a crackdown by the authorities.Over 15,000 others have been jailed including Morsi and the top leadership of his Muslim Brotherhood, and more than 200 sentenced to death in speedy trials.

Syria air strikes kill 10 children, 5 women in Aleppo: monitor

Posted:

BEIRUT (AFP) - Ten children and five women have been killed in Syrian government air strikes in the northern province of Aleppo, a monitoring group said Friday. The children, aged from four to 10, and women were killed Thursday in barrel bomb strikes by regime helicopters on a home and public hall in the village of Tal Qarrah in the north of Aleppo, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said. The bombing also destroyed civilian property and wounded several people, some of them critically, the Britain-based Observatory added.President Bashar al-Assads air force has carried out near-daily strikes against areas under rebel control in the northern province since last December, killing several hundred people, mostly civilians.Rights groups have repeatedly criticised the use of barrel bombs, which they say fail to discriminate between civilian and military targets. In July, Human Rights Watch accused the regime of defying a UN Security Council resolution ordering all sides in Syrias war to stop indiscriminate attacks.Syrias multi-front war began as a peaceful movement demanding democratic change, but morphed into an all-out civil war after Assads regime unleashed a brutal crackdown against dissent.More than 180,000 people have been killed since March 2011, and nearly half the population have fled their homes.

Israel troops shoot dead Palestinian teen in West Bank

Posted:

RAMALLAH (AFP) - Israeli troops on Friday shot dead a Palestinian teenager who the army said was about to hurl a petrol bomb at Israeli motorists near the West Bank city of Ramallah. An army spokeswoman said troops posted at the village of Silwad to protect a major road widely used by Jewish settlers in the occupied territory spotted a person about to hurl a petrol bomb. The forces fired immediately to neutralise the danger... and confirmed a hit, she said.Palestinian officials named the youth as Orwa Hammad, 17, saying he was shot during a stone-throwing protest against troops, a regular occurrence at Silwad, near Ofra settlement. The US consulate in Jerusalem said the youth held US citizenship, while locals in Silwad said Hammads father lives in the United States. We can confirm now that the teenager who was killed was an American citizen, consulate spokesman Leslie Ordeman told AFP, without commenting further. Also on Friday, police in annexed east Jerusalem clashed with Palestinians, firing tear gas to disperse stone-throwing protesters. They were deployed in force ahead of weekly Muslim prayers as the army restricted access to a flashpoint mosque, after a deadly Palestinian attack sent tensions soaring.Nightly clashes have broken out since a Palestinian ploughed his car into a crowd of Israelis on Wednesday, killing a baby, who Washington said was a US citizen, and injuring six other people before he was shot dead by police. The security presence was boosted across east Jerusalem including the Old City, police spokeswoman Luba Samri said.Palestinian men under the age of 40 were not allowed into Jerusalems Al-Aqsa mosque compound for Friday prayers because of fears of further unrest, she said. The compound is the scene of frequent clashes between Palestinians and Israeli police. The plaza houses the Dome of the Rock and Al-Aqsa mosque, Islams third-holiest site. It is also revered by Jews as the location of the biblical Jewish temples, considered Judaisms holiest place.Prayers concluded on Friday afternoon with clashes in the Wadi Joz neighbourhood north of the Old City.Palestinians there threw stones and fired flares at police, who dispersed them and arrested three demonstrators, Samri said.An AFP correspondent said undercover police in the crowd of Palestinians made the arrests. There were also clashes in east Jerusalems Issawiya neighbourhood, where AFP photographers saw police fire bursts of tear gas to break up a crowd of Palestinians who hurled rocks and burned tyres on the streets. There were no reports of injuries on either side.Samri said around 8,000 people took part in prayers at Al-Aqsa, with hundreds of others in areas around the site.On Thursday night, two Palestinians were arrested during clashes in the Old City in which stones, bottles and flares were thrown or fired at police, who used unspecified riot dispersal weapons, Samri said. The fighting has shaken east Jerusalem on an almost daily basis since the murder of a Palestinian teenager by Jewish extremists in July.Clashes intensified during the 50-day Gaza war.Police branded Wednesdays incident -- in which 21-year-old Abdelrahman Shaludi from Silwan in east Jerusalem drove at high speed into a crowd of Israelis -- a terror attack.Silwan -- a densely populated Arab neighbourhood on a steep hillside just south of the Old City -- has been the focus of Palestinian anger over Jewish settlements in east Jerusalem.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has warned that any further attacks would be met with the harshest response.

Tennis: Serena reaches WTA semis, year-end number one

Posted:

SINGAPORE (AFP) - Serena Williams reached the WTA Finals semis and was crowned year-end world number one without picking up a racquet on Friday when results went her way at the season finale in Singapore. The four-time champion was in stark danger of crashing out but she earned a reprieve when Simona Halep, her tormentor in a crushing 6-0, 6-2 defeat earlier this week, won a set against Ana Ivanovic. And more stars aligned for the 18-time Grand Slam-winner when world number two Maria Sharapova made an early exit -- ending her chances of overtaking the American in the years final rankings.Caroline Wozniacki stormed past Petra Kvitova 6-2, 6-3 to set up a semi-final against Williams on Saturday, while Halep will play Agnieszka Radwanska in the last four.Ivanovic departs despite beating Halep 7-6 (9/7), 3-6, 6-3, while Sharapova also leaves with her head held high after rallying for a 7-5, 6-7 (4/7), 6-2 win over Radwanska.Under complex round-robin calculations, Sharapova needed a straight-sets victory to survive and she came agonisingly close when she passed up three match points in the second set.I just really wanted to win this match. I had so many chances and it was just not the way that I wanted to go out in the tournament, said the Russian. That was my goal no matter how physical the match or how tough it was to lose that second set was, I wanted to win it.While Sharapovas season is over, Wozniackis is still very much in play after a victory over Kvitova that left her as the only player in the tournament to win all three group matches.Super-fit Wozniacki, who is training for next months New York marathon in lieu of her cancelled wedding to golfer Rory McIlroy, again made all the running as she beat Kvitova in 69 minutes.Following her three-hour slugfest against Sharapova and straight-sets win over Radwanska, the resurgent former world number one has hit a patch of form that has re-announced her as a force in womens tennis.I believe in myself and I believe in my skills. Ive been playing well, so I believed I could beat anyone, said eighth-ranked Wozniacki, who described Fridays win as one of her best.I obviously also knew that if I wasnt playing up to my best I could lose to all of them. So Im really pleased about the way this week has gone so far. I played really well. Today was a really great match for me.Later Ivanovic fought bitterly for the straight-sets win over Halep that she needed to stay alive, and momentum was with her when she came from behind to win the first set on a tie-breaker.But the former French Open champion inexplicably missed an open-court volley as she was broken early in the second set, which she lost 6-3 to end her tournament hopes. But like Sharapova, she gathered herself for an all-out effort in her final set of the season and she took it 6-3 to seal her 58th victory of the year, more than any other player.Polands Radwanska needed Wozniacki to beat Kvitova to reach the semi-finals -- a favour for which she promised to take her good friend shopping, on her credit card.Yeah, she told me that, too. I hope shes going to keep her promise, Wozniacki said. She owes me a handbag. I think thats what Im going to go for.

Football: Suarez will make Clasico debut, Enrique confirms

Posted:

MADRID (AFP) - Barcelona boss Luis Enrique has confirmed that Luis Suarez will make his long-awaited debut for the club in Saturdays first El Clasico of the season away to Real Madrid.Suarez has been restricted to friendly matches since sealing a 75 million pound ($127 million, 95 million euros) move from Liverpool after receiving a four-month ban for biting Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini at the World Cup.He will have some minutes for sure, Enrique told a press conference on Thursday. How many I cannot say, that is the million dollar question. It is an important occasion for him to be able to join in with the group. However, Real boss Carlo Ancelotti insisted he would be making no special plans for the Uruguayan despite recognising his presence as a big boost for La Liga as a whole.I am not here to judge Luis Suarez. He has scored a lot of goals, but it doesnt change our tactics, said the Italian.I think for football it is good news that Suarez can play in this league. I dont know if he will play (tomorrow) because it is not my business. It is not my problem. Naturally I have a lot of respect for Suarezs quality, but if Suarez plays or not doesnt change their idea of how to play the game and doesnt change ours either.Suarezs questionable temperament is likely to be tested by the red hot atmosphere at the Bernabeu. As well as his latest bite on Chiellini, the 27-year-old recievied lengthy suspensions for biting Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic last year and Otman Bakkal of PSV Eindhoven whilst playing for Ajax.Meanwhile, he was found guilty of racially abusing Manchester United defender Patrice Evra during a match between Liverpool and Manchester United in 2011.However, Enrique insisted that he wasnt concerned that Suarezs temperament could be tested by the pressure of making his bow in the biggest game in world football.Clasicos have to be heated, enjoyable and the best show possible for the fans, but staying within the sporting parameters.Whilst Suarezs availability adds to Barcas attacking arsenal alongside Lionel Messi and Neymar, Real Madrid will be without one of their key men in Gareth Bale due to injury. And Enrique echoed the words of his Madrid counterpart Carlo Ancelotti in saying the Welshmans absence wouldnt affect his sides preparation for the game.Independent of who is in Ancelottis starting line-up, we will maintain our philosophy. It is obvious that both sides will continue to play in their own different ways.Other than the debate over whether Suarez will start or make his debut as a substitute, the only other doubt in the Barca team surrounds midfielder Sergio Busquets. The Spanish international missed Barcas 3-1 win over Ajax in midweek due to a hip injury, but Enrique is confident he will be fit to take his place in the side at the Bernabeu.Busquets is fine, he has trained with the rest of the group and in principle can play without any problems.

Rallying: Title-chasing Ogier maintains lead in Spain

Posted:

SALOU (AFP) - Sebastien Ogier stayed on course to defend his world title on Friday when he opened up a comfortable lead in the Rally of Spain, the penultimate round of the 2014 championship. The Volkswagen driver has a 36.6sec lead over teammate Jari-Matti Latvala, the only man who can deprive him of the title, and a 37.2sec advantage on third-placed Mads Ostberg, the Norwegian Citroen DS3 driver.Ogier went into Spain with a 27-point lead over Latvala in the standings. The Finn must finish above Ogier, taking at least two more points, to remain in the hunt at the Wales Rally GB next month.Unlike his error-hit performance on home ground in France last time out, Ogier made the most of his rivals struggling with the dust and poor visibility caused by the low Spanish sun.Hyundai driver Thierry Neuville had led briefly in the morning but then saw his campaign compromised when his car hit a bank, puncturing the rear right tyre.Latvala also hit trouble early in the day, losing precious time when his Polo clipped a rock.

Dollar dips in cautious trade ahead of Fed meeting

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - The dollar weakened against other major currencies Friday in cautious trade ahead of next weeks Federal Reserve monetary policy meeting, expected to mark an end to its massive asset-purchase program. The market already has largely priced in the Feds exit from its easy-money quantitative easing program, said David Song of DailyFX.The US central bank began tapering the QE monthly purchases last December, when they stood at $85 billion, and the amount now is down to $15 billion. The Federal Open Market Committee, which meets Tuesday and Wednesday, is also expected to stick to its outlook on keeping its benchmark interest rate near zero to mid-2015. Caution ahead of policymakers October 28-29 meeting caused the dollar to settle into a narrow range against its rivals, said Joe Manimbo of Western Union Business Solutions. The greenback fell to $1.2666 to one euro from $1.2647 late Thursday. The euro gained support ahead of the results Sunday of the European Central Banks unprecedented stress tests on some 130 European banks.Analysts are confident that because banks have been taking action for months now to plug any holes in their balance sheets, there will not be any nasty surprises. We expect that the majority of banks will pass the assessment, said credit rating agency Fitch.Meanwhile the confirmation late Thursday of the first Ebola case in New York City had limited evident impact in currency markets, said XE Currency Blog.

Tennis: Ferrer hits 600 wins, faces Murray in Valencia

Posted:

VALENCIA (AFP) - David Ferrer became only the fourth active player to record 600 career wins when he cruised past Thomaz Bellucci 6-1, 6-2 to reach the Valencia semi-finals on Friday. The world number five delighted his home town crowd with victory in just 67 minutes as he goes on to face Andy Murray, a rival for a place in the World Tour Finals, on Saturday.Ferrer joins Roger Federer (986 wins), Rafael Nadal (706) and Lleyton Hewitt (611) in the modern era 600-win club.Im most proud of all the years that Ive been able to stay among the best players in the world, said Ferrer. There have been important tournaments that Ive won, and that Ive been proud of, but what Im most proud of is to have been able to maintain this stability for all these years.Im proud that this 600th victory was at home. I want to thank all the people that have been with me along the way.Murray earlier rallied from a set down to reach the semi-finals with a 6-7 (3/7), 6-4, 6-4 win over South Africas Kevin Anderson.Murray is hoping to boost his chances of a seventh consecutive appearance in the World Tour Finals in London next month.Murray and Ferrer are currently eighth and ninth in the race to London with three of the eight places still to fill.Ferrer won when the pair met in the Shanghai Masters third round, but Murray claimed revenge on Sunday in the Vienna final. The match tomorrow will be an important match, as was last week and also in Shanghai, said Murray. But even if I dont win the tournament this week, I will still have an opportunity in Paris if I play well there.A horrible service game that included two double-faults put Murray in trouble in the first set as the big-serving Anderson broke to love to lead 4-3.The two-time Grand Slam champion repaired the damage by breaking straight back in a marathon 22-point game, but Anderson proved too strong in the tie-break as Murrays service faltered once more. After an early exchange of breaks in the second, it was Murray who took control with some characteristic chasing from well behind the baseline before passing Anderson at the net to break for a 5-4 lead. The Scot served out for the set and broke through again at the beginning of the decider with a lovely lob for which Anderson had no answerAnd despite blowing three match points when serving for victory, Murray sealed his 16th win in 18 matches when Anderson found the net on his fourth match point.

Tennis: Nadal calls time on 2014, faces November 3 surgery

Posted:

BASEL (AFP) - Rafael Nadal suffered a 6-2, 7-6 (7/4) loss in the quarter-finals of the Swiss Indoors to teenager Borna Coric on Friday and then shut down his season to undergo appendix surgery. The nine-time French Open champion and 14-time Grand Slam title winner confirmed he will have his appendix removed on November 3.Given the circumstances the 28-year-old Spaniard said there was no logic in him competing at either next weeks Paris Masters or the eight-man World Tour Finals in London from November 9.This is the day to say goodbye for the season, said Nadal. Its the day to say I had a good first six months this year. But it was hard after that with back and (three-month summer) wrist problems and now the appendix. Im not going to play Paris or London, Im not competitive enough to do that.I need to do the surgery, I need to work on my back next week before the operation. Then I need five weeks to recover.Nadal, who had been taking antibiotics to treat appendicitis since the Chinese swing of the tour earlier this month, said his goal is to have a month of training in December when his physical problems are mended. If I play the last two tournaments, I would not be competitive and would have no chance to win. It is better for me to recover. I hope to be back at the start of 2015 ready for anything.Nadal had already announced earlier Friday that he was skipping next weeks Paris Masters for personal reasons. If Nadal does not come, it would be with a heavy heart. I think he will have surgery, said Paris Masters tournament director Guy Forget.Nadal had secured one of the eight places in the World Tour Finals and his withdrawal now leaves four more spots to be filled with Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Stan Wawrinka and Marin Cilic already guaranteed their places.Corics win in just under one and three-quarter hours announced the 17-year-old Croatian as a name for the future. The wildcard raced away with three straight breaks of Nadal, taking a 5-0 lead in the opening set. This is a huge surprise, said the world number 124. I couldnt believe I got to 5-0 in the first set against Nadal. I was scared he would start a comeback. But I stayed very calm and I played well.Top seed Roger Federer was taking on fifth-seeded Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov as the Swiss continued his bid for a sixth home trophy.David Goffin, seeded seventh, knocked off London year-end finals contender Milos Raonic, with the fourth seed from Canada exiting 6-7 (3/7), 6-3, 6-4.Goffin is having his best season, with a pair of ATP titles and four more at Challenger events. Its one of my nicest victories, if not the nicest, said Goffin. Its really pleasing.I cant really comprehend what Ive achieved since Wimbledon: more than 40 victories, two titles ... I think Ill only realize what Ive achieved when Im on holiday.Goffin and Coric face off in a Saturday semi-final.The winner of the Federer-Dimitrov match plays eighth seed Ivo Karlovic, a 6-4, 6-4 winner over Germanys Benjamin Becker.

He was quiet. He was just sitting there. Everyone was talking. All of a sudden I see him stand up, pull something out of his pocket, he said.At first I thought it was just someone making a really loud noise with like a bag, like a pretty loud pop until I heard four more after that, and I saw three kids just fall from the table like they were falling to the ground dead.Television footage also showed schoolchildren coming out of the sprawling campus in Marysville, 35 miles (55 kilometers) north of Seattle, which has some 2,500 students. When that happened I just ran the opposite direction and I was out of there as fast as I could.A hospital spokeswoman told CNN: Four patients came to this center from the scene. Three of them remained at the center... the three most critically ill were kept here.
