Chenab Rangers have demanded a flag meeting with the Indian forces in the wake of recent LoC ceasefire violations.India and Pakistan often accuse each other of violating a border ceasefire which has largely held since 2003.Despite the truce, firing along the disputed de facto border called the Line of Control that separates Kashmir into Indian and Pakistani sectors, has occurred sporadically.

Pakistan to face Australia in 1st ODI today

Posted:

SHARJAH (Agencies) - Pakistan and Australia will focus on spin when they start a three-match one-day series in Sharjah on Tuesday, despite the absence of top bowler Saeed Ajmal, who is suspended over his suspect bowling action.Pakistan have been hard pressed to compensate for the missing Ajmal, who has single-handedly won them matches in all three formats of the game in the last five years. He was reported for a suspect bowling action on Pakistans August tour of Sri Lanka and was subsequently banned from international cricket after a bio-mechanic analysis found his action illegal.Skipper Misbah-ul Haq stressed Pakistan must move on.Its really difficult to fill Ajmals gap because he has been the number one or two bowler in the one-day rankings, but if Ajmal is not there we must try to fill his gap and move forward, said Misbah on Monday.Pakistan have two left-arm spinners in the squad in Raza Hasan, who took 2-17 in Pakistans six wicket defeat in the lone Twenty20 in Dubai on Sunday, and the experienced Zulfiqar Babar.Pakistan will also miss allrounder Mohammad Hafeez, who injured his hand on Saturday and will miss the limited over series. But Misbah conceded that Pakistan will have to put runs on the board after being restricted to 96-9 in the Twenty20 match, with Australian spinners Glenn Maxwell (3-13) and Cameron Boyce (2-10) causing trouble.I think the Australian batsmen have improved against spin by playing in the Indian league. If its spinning and the bowler puts it in the right areas, then it’s difficult for everyone, it’s tough and at the same time you have to bat well against their spinners, said Misbah.Pakistans batting will again be tested after their miserable show on the Sri Lankan tour where they lost the one-day series 2-1 and the Tests 2-0.Australia also are without their regular captain Michael Clarke who is facing a race against time to get fit from a hamstring injury for the two Tests which follow the one-dayers.Also out are allrounders Shane Watson (ankle) and Mitchell Marsh (hamstring).Skipper George Bailey said Pakistan will be tough even without Ajmal.Theres no doubt hes been very important to Pakistan, said Bailey of Ajmal. But Pakistan will be trying to prove they dont rely too much on him and it will pose different challenges (for us).Bailey accepted it will be a challenge to counter the spin.I still think teams are doctoring their wickets when we come and play to produce very large spinning wickets, which says to me that teams still think that were vulnerable against spin, Bailey said. The challenge for us is to become good against spin.Pakistan have not beaten Australia in a one-day series since winning 2-1 Down Under in 2002. Since then Australia have won three in a row in 2009 (UAE), 2010 (Australia) and 2012 (UAE).Teams (from):Pakistan: Misbah-ul-Haq (capt), Ahmed Shahzad, Sami Aslam, Umar Akmal, Fawad Alam, Umar Amin, Asad Shafiq, Sohaib Maqsood, Sarfraz Ahmed, Shahid Afridi, Raza Hasan, Mohammad Irfan, Anwar Ali, Wahab Riaz, Junaid Khan, Zulfiqar Babar.Australia: George Bailey (capt), David Warner, Aaron Finch, Steven Smith, Phil Hughes, Glenn Maxwell, Brad Haddin, James Faulkner, Sean Abbott, Kane Richardson, Mitchell Johnson, Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon.Umpires: Richard Illingworth (ENG) and Ahsan Raza (PAK).Tv umpire: Nigel Llong (ENG).Match referee: Javagal Srinath (IND).

Hong Kong protests fade; students vow to carry on

Posted:

HONG KONG (AP) - The students whose calls for democratic reforms sparked the most dramatic challenge to authorities since Hong Kong returned to Chinese control are vowing to keep up the fight. But as the numbers of protesters dwindled Monday from tens of thousands into the hundreds, it was unclear where the tumult of the past week would lead.Schools reopened and civil servants returned to work after protesters cleared the area outside the city government headquarters, a focal point of the demonstrations that began Sept. 26. Crowds also thinned markedly at the two other protest sites, and traffic flowed again through many roads that had been blocked. In the Mong Kok district, the site of weekend clashes in which mobs tried to drive the demonstrators out of the intersection they were blocking, hundreds of curious onlookers surrounded the remaining protesters Monday evening, taking pictures. The threats in Mong Kok have passed, and now people are just curious about the sit-in, said 36-year-old Anita Lee, a resident. Thats why there are more onlookers than protesters. Many in Hong Kong are wondering if the protest movement may have run its course and whether the students have a clear strategy for pressing their demand that all candidates for the citys top leader, or chief executive, not be screened by a pro-Beijing committee. They cant sustain attendance in protests if it goes on and on, said Michael Davis, a professor at Hong Kong University. They need some strategy where they can withdraw the crowds so they can say to the government that if they are not sincere, they will mobilize crowds back on the streets.Disagreements were evident after the students and the government began preliminary talks.Lau Kong-wah, the undersecretary of constitutional affairs, said late Monday that the government and students had agreed on terms for the talks, including that the two sides would be on an equal footing.Lester Shum, a leader of the Hong Kong Federation of Students, confirmed the agreement, but said they had not discussed or reached a consensus on the agenda.Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying, who has rejected the protesters calls for him to resign, said in a TV address Monday that the government would seek a sincere dialogue on political reform. At the same time, Leung reiterated that everyone should go home and stop blocking the streets. There are lots of teenagers and students with passion who love Hong Kong in various assemblies. However, some of them are aggressive and use violence. No matter what your attitude is toward Occupy Central, the police will firmly take enforcement action to those who use violence, he said. The students say they would walk away from the talks if police, who fired tear gas and pepper spray on unarmed protesters Sept. 28, use force to clear away the remaining demonstrators. The police violence and attacks by mobs drew huge crowds in a massive show of support. Its up to the government now. This is the first step, but the pressure has to continue, said Alex Chow, one of the student leaders. The leeway for negotiations appears limited since Leung and Chinese officials have said Beijing will stick to its decision to screen all candidates for top leader, which many in Hong Kong say amounts to reneging on its promise of universal suffrage. One option would be to convince the government that having open nominations for chief executive is not as big a threat as the potential for further protests. In that sense, I think they can already declare victory in this round 1 of their movement, Davis said. Theres a contest for the hearts and minds of Hong Kong people going on, and protesters have clearly won round 1. They have the public support and sympathy. While they might be weak in coordination and strategy, the protesters youthfulness and the movements lack of central leadership have added to their appeal. Lawmakers and pro-democracy politicians have played almost no role in the movement, which began as Occupy Central a campaign founded last year by law professor Benny Tai. But Tai and other Occupy leaders have let several student and grass-roots political groups lead the protests. One faction, Scholarism, is led by 17-year-old Joshua Wong and draws many younger students, while the Federation of Students represents mostly university students. Still other protesters say they follow no particular group or leader.Differences and confusion within the movement became clear Sunday, when several leaders announced a retreat from key sites, while others declared there was no withdrawal or urged protesters to regroup in one main area.Still, the protesters share a common agenda. There is still a remarkably consistent demand for genuine democracy, said Alvin Y.H. Cheung, a visiting scholar at the U.S.-Asia Law Institute. There is a striking unity of purpose. The young activists also have shown an impressive knack for coordination and planning. Although the sit-ins formed spontaneously, they were disciplined and doggedly nonviolent. The youths camped out in the middle of city streets, organized ample supply lines and kept the occupation areas as litter-free and orderly as possible.By Monday, many of the remaining protesters in Hong Kongs Admiralty district and across Victoria Harbor in Mong Kok were undeterred by their dwindling numbers but admitted they could not afford to neglect work and school much longer. But 18-year-old Louis Chan said he was not sure achieving free elections the students original goal is likely.I did think it was possible, but now I dont think so because they (the Hong Kong government) didnt give any response and China is also very much against this, he said.

Clinton says military action in Iraq is essential

OTTAWA (AP) - Hillary Rodham Clinton says military action against Islamic militants in Iraq and Syria is essential and the U.S. would turn away from the threat at our peril.Clinton, a potential 2016 presidential contender, gave a speech and took questions in Ottawa at a Canada2020 think tank event on Monday. She says the fight against militants will be a long-term struggle and says an information war on social media is needed, as well as an air war.Clinton says there is bipartisan agreement on the dealing with Islamic State militants, which is to degrade and defeat them.Asked about running for president, Clinton she is thinking hard but wont make her decision until after the upcoming midterm Congressional elections in November. She previously said she would decide early next year.

BEIJING (AP) - Police say five people were killed on Monday in an explosion at an illegal fireworks factory in southern China.Police in Guizhou province are investigating the cause of the blast which ripped through the factory in the village of Lanjiang. One other person was injured.China has shut down thousands of illegal fireworks workshops to try to end accidents caused by dangerous production conditions or shoddy safety equipment. However, the industry remains an economic lifeline for many poor rural regions, providing an incentive to avoid regulators.Fireworks are used in China to celebrate auspicious occasions such as weddings and the opening of new businesses, as well as in rituals for the dead.Mondays explosion came on the next-to-last day of the weeklong National Day holiday, when many offices are closed and police resources are redirected to ensure transportation safety and crowd control at scenic sights that are mobbed by domestic tourists.

FIFA's $27 million World Cup film fails to inspire

Posted:

ZURICH (AP) - Funded with $27 million of FIFA money, the movie United Passions is acquiring almost mythical status in football circles.Mythical in the sense that the film, which was shown at the Zurich Film Festival on Sunday, has not been seen by many, and its relationship to documentary truth about FIFAs troubled recent history is loose. In industry circles, United Passions would easily be defined as a box office flop even with star power from Gerard Depardieu, Sam Neill and Tim Roth. But even in a World Cup year, a film telling the governing bodys historical story is a tough sell when it carries the toxic tag The FIFA Movie.Suspicion it is a vanity project with script approval for President Sepp Blatter, portrayed by Academy Award-nominated Roth, is fueled by on-screen lines like one spoken in 1998, soon after his first election in what was widely reported as a ballot bought by some of his supporters. The slightest breach of ethics will be severely punished, Roth-as-Blatter tells FIFA marketing executives. The one-off screening in FIFAs home city on Sunday was introduced by a festival staffer with thanks to FIFA for making this Swiss premiere happen. It was watched by about 120 people in a 500-capacity theater at the Arena multiplex. At a top price of 22 Swiss francs ($22.70) per ticket, including the one bought by The Associated Press, the take would be about 2,400 Swiss francs ($2,480).That should boost the international box office takings to between $150,000 and $200,000, according to figures supplied by film industry data analyst Rentrak.Switzerland became only the seventh country to screen United Passions since its world premiere at Cannes in May, according to Rentrak, which monitors screenings and earnings in 70 countries.Depardieu and Blatter attended the Cannes launch. But it was only in Ukraine, which had a June 5 release, that the film could be seen before the 2014 World Cup kicked off in Brazil on June 12.Host nation distributors passed on it, even with a starring role for Neill as Joao Havelange, the most powerful Brazilian in FIFAs 110-year history. He resigned last year as honorary president to avoid sanctions for taking million-dollar kickbacks from World Cup deals.France also passed on the French production, albeit in English, which stars one of its most celebrated actors in Depardieu playing Jules Rimet, who founded the World Cup. In France, it went straight to DVD in July.Russia was the main market with box office earnings topping 5.7 million rubles ($144,000), according to Rentrak. The 2018 World Cup host had 162 screens showing United Passions on its July 3 release. As word of mouth spread, 73 screens showed it the second week. It then closed.A two-week run in Portugal reaped 5,300 euros ($6,650); three weeks in Serbia brought in 254,000 dinar ($2,700); box office returns for releases in Slovenia and Hungary were not available to Rentrak. The clear pattern of failure for United Passions does not mean it is the travesty FIFA critics hoped for. It is dull rather than offensive.FIFA did, however, encourage skeptics by handling the project like a guilty secret. Some members of Blatters executive committee with clean reputations and no reason to fear the story said they had no idea FIFAs money was spent this way.Only in June did FIFA finance director Markus Kattner confirm that FIFA paid 90 percent of the films budget using cash approved in a vaguely worded 2009 financial report entry.FIFA had wanted to fund a movie for its centenary in 2004, and revived the plan when French producers approached.FIFA then agreed to contribute, the governing body said in June, considering this to be a unique opportunity to raise awareness of the breadth of FIFAs work to develop football globally.Yet when Depardieu visited FIFA in October 2012 and at the Ballon dOr gala the following January, the film project was not mentioned in news releases.Blatter was also evasive. In an August 2013 interview with the AP, he dismissed a question about who might play him in a movie as if the thought never occurred to him. Roth was due in Zurich days later for filming. The film is no classic, for sure. There are too many men in meetings, and not enough action football on the field or scandal in the board room to sustain interest. On film industry website IMDB, 700 users have graded the movie at 3.2 out of 10.The script is a clunker, too. Within minutes, references to the beautiful game and football being more important than life or death are spoken in a scene set in 1904, decades before Pele and Bill Shankly coined what are now tired cliches.Unintentional comedy can also be enjoyed by viewers with basic knowledge of FIFA politics. The film introduces Blatter in 1975, when he worked for a Swiss watch brand.Im taking up football. No more watches, says the fictional Blatter, who in reality has yet to explain what he did with his $26,000 watch presented by the Brazilian federation to football officials at the World Cup.FIFAs ethics committee wants them back to sell for a Brazilian charity. The film strives for a dramatic climax with Blatters 2002 re-election in Seoul, South Korea. It was a time of stunning upheaval at FIFA, though the conflict is hardly hinted at.Any tension on screen deflates in an extended slow-motion shot of a dark-suited Roth walking into the election room, in apparent homage to his celebrated Reservoir Dogs role as a good cop working undercover in a criminal gang. Perhaps this is among the ironic touches United Passions director and co-writer Frederic Auburtin has said he inserted. The film points to Havelange as the cause of corruption while Blatter is the hard worker recruiting Coca-Cola as a sponsor, left alone to fend off a hostile press and, as one aide says, betrayed by his colleagues.Another curiosity of the Seoul section is Blatter not having an identified election opponent.African football leader Issa Hayatou routed in that 2002 ballot, now No. 2 to Blatter as FIFA senior vice president is airbrushed from the plot. So are Jack Warner, Mohamed bin Hammam, Ricardo Teixeira, Nicolas Leoz and the rest of FIFAs executive committee on Blatters 16-years-and-counting presidential watch.Detailing Hayatous opposition would jar with a major United Passions theme, that of Blatter as visionary supporter of African and womens football. It is unfortunate timing that the film landed in Zurich the same week as a discrimination lawsuit filed in Canada and supported by the past two FIFA Womens World Player of the Year winners, Abby Wambach and Nadine Angerer over FIFA approving the 2015 Womens World Cup to be played on artificial turf. The movie ends with Roth-as-Blatter crassly imposed on actual footage of Nelson Mandela lifting the World Cup trophy at FIFA headquarters in 2004 when South Africa was chosen as 2010 host.FIFA is unlikely to see much return on its $27 million investment, though the loss is cushioned by having $1.5 billion in the bank. Still, that $27 million represents FIFAs entire 2013 spending on its Goal development program, which targets projects in poorer member federations. The money could also pay, several times over, to have natural grass surfaces put in six Canadian stadiums for the worlds best female players.

Pietersen: Players were bullied in England team

Posted:

LONDON (AP) - Kevin Pietersen has criticized Englands hierarchy for allowing what he perceived to be a culture of bullying and intimidation in the national team, accusing former coach Andy Flower of ruling by fear and ex-teammate Matt Prior of picking on players. In an interview with British newspaper The Daily Telegraph ahead of the release of his autobiography, Pietersen said Prior the teams wicketkeeper and Englands bowlers ran the dressing room and that fielders were forced to apologize for errors and dropped catches.Horrendous. Hugely disturbing, Pietersen was quoted Monday as saying. The South African-born Pietersen, who was told in February that he had no future with England after nine turbulent years in the team, said that it got to the point where Flower and former captain Andrew Strauss said they had been approached by team members that were intimidated to field the ball.I thought, I reckon I could hit these guys, Pietersen said. Who do you think you are, to ask for an apology from someone whos trying his heart out, whos playing for his country, whos making a mistake?Pietersen targeted Prior by saying he was a bad influence, a negative influence he picks on player.Prior reacted on Twitter, saying it was sad to see the accusations against me.I WILL have my right of reply Prior wrote. However today is not the day and Twitter is not the place for itThe England and Wales Cricket Board said it would not be commenting because the governing body had not received Pietersens book despite requests to the publishers.Pietersen is a former England captain and the countrys all-time leading run-scorer in all formats. However the brash batsmans talent has regularly been overshadowed by his ability to attract controversy, notably when he was dropped for exchanging provocative messages with South Africa players about then-captain Strauss during a test series.Pietersen was reintegrated to the team but was dropped permanently after Englands embarrassing tour of Australia, when it was whitewashed 5-0 in the Ashes series.Flower, who left his position after the tour to Australia, was accused by Pietersen of building a regime, not a team.I told him on numerous occasions, Youre playing by fear here, you want guys to be scared of you. And Andy Im not scared of you. And he hated it.The 34-year-old Pietersen said he still wanted to play for England again.I know that my issues are not just the captain of England but the board, Pietersen said. If that changes and I believe it could do in the next few months then I really believe I could play for England again. The reason I want to play for England is that I honestly 100 percent believe I can help the youngsters get better and I believe I can help Cooky (captain Alastair Cook) get better.
