Tennis: Wozniacki stuns Sharapova in WTA Finals marathon

Posted:

SINGAPORE (AFP) - A raging Caroline Wozniacki stunned Maria Sharapova in a marathon three-setter at the WTA Finals on Tuesday despite mid-match outbursts over faulty stadium lighting and an errant line call. The Dane edged a thrilling encounter 7-6 (7/4), 6-7 (5/7), 6-2 in Singapore as she dented Sharapovas hopes of overtaking Serena Williams to be crowned the year-end world number one.It was a great match, its always tough to play the first time and get into the rhythm, said the eighth seed. Im just so happy to be through.Wozniacki edged a tight first set before threatening to halt play in the second when stadium spotlights started sweeping the crowd during a point and shone in her eyes while serving. She then blew up over a line call and lost the second set, before finally clinching the match in three hours, 13 minutes -- one of the longest of the season, and 16 minutes short of the tournament record.Wozniackis second straight win over Sharapova underlines her strong finish to a year which has had peaks as well as troughs, including her US Open runner-up finish and break-up with golfer Rory McIlroy.Sharapova needs to win her remaining round robin matches and reach the final of the year-ending tournament to have any chance of knocking Williams off the top spot in the seasons final rankings. The world number two was broken in her first service game before she clawed it back and served for the opening set -- only to double-fault twice as she was broken for a second time.Sharapova bravely saved a set point at 5-6 down when she picked out the right tramline with a pinpoint forehand. But Wozniacki then reeled off five straight points to win the tiebreaker 7/4.Wozniacki also broke immediately in set two but there was controversy in the sixth game when she stopped playing and raised her arms in disbelief when flashing stadium lights disrupted her concentration. In a long exchange with the chair umpire, Wozniacki threatened to stop playing until the problem was fixed and when she resumed, she was broken for 3-3 and smacked the ball away in frustration. The Dane snatched back a break in the next game and she then served for the match, but Sharapova broke at the critical juncture to keep the encounter alive.Wozniacki was again incensed and she smashed her racquet on the net when, without any challenges left at 5-6 down, a clear wide shot was missed by the line judge giving Sharapova set point.Wozniacki gesticulated sarcastically at the line judge when she eventually saved her service game and forced the tiebreak -- which Sharapova led throughout to force the decider 7/5.But as the match ticked past three hours, the Dane was not discouraged by the setback and she again broke at the first attempt and once more for 4-2 before sealing it on her first match point.Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova was taking on Agnieszka Radwanska in Tuesdays second match in White Group. The eight-player season finale, being played in Asia for the first time, concludes on Sunday.

Tennis: Robredo ousts Isner in Valencia

VALENCIA (AFP) - Fifth seed John Isner crashed out of the Valencia Open in the first round to Spanish veteran Tommy Robredo 7-6 (7/3), 6-3 on Tuesday. The American, who has only won two matches in four visits to Valencia, lost the opening set in a tie-break after neither man could make an impact on the others serve. And world number 21 Robredo got the all-important break in the penultimate game of the match before serving it out for a first win over Isner in four attempts.Robredo will now face Chinese Taipeis Yen-Hsun Lu in round two.Fourth seed Feliciano Lopez had an easier afternoon as he eased past Slovakian Norbert Gombos 6-4, 6-4 in little over an hour to set up a last-16 meeting with fellow Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta.Big-serving South African Kevin Anderson was also a winner in straight sets as he downed Germanys Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-3, 6-4.Anderson is a potential quarter-final opponent for Andy Murray, who continues his quest to reach the World Tour Finals against Jurgen Melzer on Wednesday, and will face Slovakias Martin Klizan in the second round.Frances Gilles Simon was another seed to fall as he was swept aside by Alexandr Dolgopolov 6-0, 6-3.And Italys Fabio Fognini enjoyed an unusually drama free day as he cruised past Spaniard Albert Ramos-Vinolas 6-4, 6-2.The top two seeds David Ferrer and Thomas Berdych get their campaigns underway on Wednesday against Andreas Seppi and Pablo Andujar respectively.

Football: Bayern in seventh heaven after Roma massacre

Posted:

ROME (AFP) - Five-time European champions Bayern Munich took a huge step towards qualification for the last 16 of the Champions League with a remarkable 7-1 rout of Roma at a stunned Stadio Olimpico on Tuesday.Pep Guardiolas Bundesliga leaders travelled to the Eternal City looking to draw first blood in the first of two consecutive encounters between the Group E rivals -- they meet in Munich in a fortnight. Instead the German champions, who won their last Champions League title in 2013, cemented their credentials as potential winners of this campaign.Rudi Garcias men were a pale shadow of the side that had beaten CSKA Moscow 5-1 at home and battled to a 1-1 draw with Manchester City. But even Bayern seemed astonished at how easily the Serie A high-flyers crumbled during a spectacular first half that saw the visitors take a 5-0 lead. This is one-off result, it doesnt reflect the true difference between the sides, Guardiola told reporters. We still have to play Roma in two weeks and I bet you it wont be the same.Dutch playmaker Arjen Robben opened the scoring with a sublime chip towards the far post of Morgan De Sanctiss net.Further strikes from Mario Goetze, Robert Lewandowski, a second from Robben and a Thomas Mueller penalty left Garcias men with a mountain to climb. The first 45 minutes must have struck a chord with Garcia, whose Lille side suffered a 5-0 first-half rout by Bayern during a 6-1 group stage defeat in 2012 in Munich when the German side went on to lift the trophy.By the final whistle, Roma were sorely reminded of their 7-1 defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford in 2007.Roma remain second in the Group on four points, two points clear of Manchester City who were held to a 2-2 draw by CSKA Moscow, and a repentant Garcia said they still have a chance of qualifying. The first person at fault is me, said the Frenchman. We let them play their game and after conceding the early goal we made the mistake of trying to level quickly instead of waiting patiently. It hurts us a lot. We were missing a lot of things and you cant afford to be underpar against a team like this.It wasnt our night. But we have to be mentally strong and show that its not going to affect us. I said the worse thing that can happen to us is to be humiliated by Bayern, and we were.He added: The only positive we can take from tonight is the draw between CSKA and Manchester City. Were still second in the group and still in with a chance of qualifying.Although Roma came fighting back in a more positive second half that saw Gervinho reduce the arrears on 66 minutes, the damage had already been done. The Bayern rout began in the ninth minute, Robben finding himself in space to the right of goal -- with veteran English fullback Ashley Cole outpaced -- and firing a delightful left-foot shot past De Sanctis.Gervinho almost levelled minutes later but a superb Manuel Neuer blocked his strike from just inside the area.Bayern doubled their lead on 23 minutes when Goetze ran in to fire Muellers cheeky flick past the wrong-footed De Sanctis. It was the German World Cup heros sixth goal in the last five games for Bayern.Romas heads dropped, and moments later Juan Bernats cross found Lewandowski unmarked to nod in from six yards.Cole again struggled to match the pace of Robben, who latched on to a simple pass to run down and beat De Sanctis for his second of the match.Bayern had their fifth six minutes later when Kostas Manolas handled and Mueller stepped up to beat De Sanctis from the spot.Gervinho had gone close on several occasions and he finally found the net when he headed past Neuer from close range after Radja Nainggolans inch-perfect delivery from the left following Juan Iturbes searing run.Franck Ribery replaced Lewandowski in the 68th minute and 10 minutes later struck Bayerns sixth and Xherdan Shaqiri rubbed salt into Romas wounds when he grabbed Bayerns seventh.

Football: Neymar, Messi strike to ease Barca past Ajax

Posted:

BARCELONA (AFP) - Barcelona warmed up for their clash with Real Madrid on Saturday in fine fashion as goals from Neymar, Lionel Messi and Sandro Ramirez handed them a 3-1 Champions League win over Ajax on Tuesday.Neymar grabbed the opener in the Group F clash at the Camp Nou after just seven minutes when he collected Messis pass to curl the ball into the far corner before Messi put Barca firmly in command when he slotted home 14 minutes later.Barca coach Luis Enrique then withdrew Neymar, Messi and Andres Iniesta in the second half to keep them fresh for the weekend.Ajax briefly threatened a comeback when Anwar El Ghazi halved the deficit two minutes from time, but Sandro drove home a third in stoppage time to secure a deserved victory for the Catalans.Edinson Cavanis late winner for Paris Saint-Germain away to APOEL Nicosia means Barca remain a point behind the French champions at the top of Group F, but extend their advantage over third-placed Ajax to four points. We didnt kill the game in the first half when we were well on top and then after a scramble they get back into the game, said Luis Enrique. But I am happy with what I saw on the field. We are going to the Bernabeu at a perfect time. We are leaders in the league and are desperate to measure ourselves against our eternal rivals.Ajax boss Frank de Boer, meanwhile, thought his inexperienced side showed too much respect to Barcas stars.I think we gave them too much respect. I know we dont have much experience in the team but playing against a team of this level you cant give them that much respect.I can understand it, but at the same time you dream of playing these games so you have to show your quality.Messi and Neymar have now combined for 19 of their sides 28 goals this season and the lethal duo combined to open the scoring as Messi sucked in the Ajax defence before releasing Neymar to curl home his 10th goal in as many games.Moments later it was Messi who had a good chance to double the hosts advantage, but he fired over from just inside the area. The Argentine did get on the scoresheet midway through the first half when he collected a lovely pass from Andres Iniesta and, despite Jasper Cillessens best efforts, Messis low shot trickled over the line.Messi was the provider once more as Barca came within inches of a third when Pedro Rodriguez smacked the post. And only a fine save from Cillessen prevented Iniesta from sealing a wonderful individual run with a goal six minutes before half-time after he ghosted past three Ajax defenders.Messis goal had brought the four-time World Player of the Year level with Cristiano Ronaldo on 69 Champions League goals, two behind Rauls all-time record of 71.His attempts to inch closer to the record were frustrated after the break as he had a goal rightly ruled out for offside before firing into the side-netting from a narrow angle.Neymar, Messi and Iniesta were all then withdrawn with the upcoming trip to the Bernabeu in mind, and with the major threat to their goal removed, Ajax began to create chances of their own.Davy Klaassen blazed over when well-positioned inside the area 15 minutes from time, and Frank de Boers men did ensure there were a nervy final few minutes for Barca when substitute El Ghazi bundled the ball home from close range two minutes from time. However, Sandro sealed the three points with a fine low finish into the far corner at the end of a flowing counter-attack in the fourth minute of stoppage time.

Football: Drogba on target in Chelsea rout of Maribor

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Didier Drogba scored his first goal since returning to Chelsea as Jose Mourinhos side took control of Champions League Group G with a crushing 6-0 victory over Maribor at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday.Drogbas last goal for the Blues was the decisive penalty that saw Bayern Munich beaten in the 2012 Champions League final. And, having returned to west London during the last transfer window, the Ivory Coast striker again scored from the spot to put his side 2-0 up -- although it meant ignoring Mourinho, who had said Eden Hazard would be Chelseas penalty-taker.Loic Remy had opened the scoring in the 13th minute before John Terry put Chelsea in total control with a 31st-minute goal.A second-half own goal from Mitja Viler followed by two goals from Eden Hazard, one a penalty, confirmed a win that extended Chelseas outstanding start to the season. The only blow suffered by Premier League leaders Chelsea was an injury to Remy that could make him a doubt to face Manchester United on Sunday. To finish (my time at Chelsea) with a penalty and start again with a penalty was nice symmetry, Drogba told Sky Sports. I am really happy because of the way we played today. We scored one, then two and didnt stop, we continued to play. However, Mourinho, while pleased by the result, was not happy at seeing his penalty instructions ignored.I was surprised that Eden Hazard gave the ball to Didier Drogba for the penalty, he said. I wasnt particularly pleased, no. I have my choices and Hazard is number one. Because it was a goal, I was happy.Mourinho had insisted before this game he would not allow the upcoming trip to Old Trafford to influence his team selection. And the Portuguese boss was good to his word, naming a strong side that showed just two changes from the team that started in Saturdays victory at Crystal Palace.Goalkeeper Petr Cech made only his second start of the season and Kurt Zouma, the teenage centre-back, came in for his Champions League debut in place of Gary Cahill. With Diego Costa still injured after suffering a hamstring injury on international duty with Spain, Remy was again handed the responsibility of leading the attack.Remy responded when, having been picked out by an excellent through ball by Terry, he advanced from 30 yards and cut in from the right before drilling a low, left foot shot inside the far post for his second goal since arriving from Queens Park Rangers on transfer deadline day. That, though, was the forwards last meaningful contribution with Remy pulling up holding his groin, prompting the introduction of substitute Drogba.Mourinho had warned Drogba was unable to complete 90 minutes after the 37-year-old had struggled to make an impact in Chelseas opening Champions League group game against Schalke. On this occasion, however, it took the striker just seven minutes to register his presence.Maribor midfielder Ales Mertelj conceded a penalty after using his hand to block Willians attempted pass and Drogba finished emphatically. That left Maribor facing a daunting task and worse was to come for the Slovenian side.Terry added a third goal after a lightning break following a Maribor corner.Hazard picked up a long clearance and broke into the Maribor half before laying the ball off to Cesc Fabregas whose low cross was met inside the six-yard box by Terry, who had raced the length of the pitch to join the attack.Chelsea pressed on after the break when Viler turned the ball into his own net from Hazards cross in the 54th minute and Maribors match was summed up when Chelseas Nemanja Matic clumsily barged into Agim Ibraimi to concede a penalty only for the strikers spot-kick to hit the post.Hazard rubbed salt into the wound by converted the third penalty of the match, after Branislav Ivanovic had been tripped by Zeljko Filipovic, in the 77th minute before wrapping things up with a fine individual effort in the closing seconds.

KUALA LUMPUR (AFP) - Badminton world number one Lee Chong Wei recently failed a drug test, Malaysian media reported late Tuesday, in a claim that sent shockwaves around the nation.Malaysias Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said earlier in the day that an athlete from the country had tested positive for a banned substance. We have to lend him all our support Malaysian one user wrote on Twitter.Khairy said in a statement that the countrys anti-doping agency was informed in a letter from the international sports federation on October 1 of the failed doping test in an international tournament. He added that the athlete had submitted another sample for further tests, the results of which were still pending. He gave no indication of when the final results would be known.Khairy said he had asked top sports officials to undertake a thorough investigation of all the medical treatment that Lee had received. If the results come back positive, it would mark Malaysias second doping scandal in recent months.Earlier this month, the head of the Wushu Federation of Malaysia resigned to take responsibility after Asian Games champion Tai Cheau Xuen tested positive for doping and was stripped of her gold medal. In Copenhagen, Lee lost to Chinas Chen Long in the final.

Oil prices edge higher, supported by Chinese GDP data

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - Oil prices moved higher on Tuesday with support from better-than-expected data on Chinese growth in the third quarter, especially a pickup in industrial output. But the generous supplies of crude on the global market continued to limit any price gains.US benchmark West Texas Intermediate (WTI) for November delivery added 10 cents to close at $82.81 a barrel.Brent North Sea crude for December rose 82 cents to $86.22 in London trade.Chinas third-quarter economic growth rate came in at 7.3 percent, the lowest pace in five years, but faster than many analysts had expected.Daniel Ang, investment analyst with Phillip Futures in Singapore, said traders were cheered by Chinas data for industrial production in September: output rebounded to an 8.0 percent year-on-year pace, after sinking to a five-year low of 6.9 percent in August.Industrial production is a good indication of crude oil demand from China, Ang said, although he added that it remained to be seen whether the September gains would be sustained in the coming months.Carl Larry of Oil Outlooks and Opinions said the WTI price gain was limited by worries about another rise in the US governments weekly oil stockpiles report on Wednesday. There is some inventory nervousness, anticipation of a build in crude (stocks) tomorrow.

ECB bond-buying reports send euro lower

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - Reports that the European Central Bank could expand its bond-buying programme to corporate debt pushed the euro lower against the dollar and other major currencies Tuesday. The idea, reportedly under discussion at the ECB but not yet decided on, comes as the central bank struggles to combat deflation pressures and shore up growth in the 18-nation eurozone. If followed through early next year as some reports suggest, the move could further push down long-term interest rates in the euro area and further encourage bank lending.Currently the ECBs quantitative easing program is limited to covered bonds and asset-backed securities, but the corporate paper market is much larger and well-established.Christopher Vecchio, currency analyst at DailyFX, said there was an impetus behind the euros fall from the German finance ministers remarks that a weak euro is good for German exports. The ECB corporate bond buying rumor is one thing, but outright acknowledgement from a German official that a weaker euro is welcomed is a downright shock, he said. The dollar was also supported by a rebound in existing-home sales in the United States in September, suggesting falling mortgage rates may be pushing buyers back into the market.

Misbah, Clarke ready for spin challenge

Posted:

DUBAI (AFP) - Skippers Michael Clarke and Misbah-ul Haq Tuesday agreed spin will play a major role in the first of two Tests between Australia and Pakistan starting in Dubai from today (Wednesday).Australia have practiced on a specially prepared spin pitch at Brisbane in the lead up and hired world record Sri Lankan spinner Muttiah Muralitharan to learn how to bowl and play spin.Despite ace spinner Saeed Ajmal being suspended due to an illegal bowling action, Pakistan will rely on uncapped leg-spinner Yasir Shah and left-armer Zulfiqar Babar to expose Australia on a Dubai stadium pitch, known for taking spin from the outset.Australian captain Michael Clarke agreed spin will be in focus.I think spin will definitely play a major role in this series. How you bowl it, how you face it and I think thats probably the plan for Pakistan, Clarke said on Tuesday.I think theyll rely heavily on reverse swing and their spin bowling, and we will need to do the same, said Clarke, who hinted Australia could also play both Nathan Lyon and Steve OKeefe in the match. Its definitely a possibility. I dont know what the eleven is yet but I certainly think its a huge possibility on the wicket I saw yesterday.Clarke, who has recovered from a hamstring injury sustained on the tour of Zimbabwe two months ago, admitted he lacked match practice.I wouldnt say lack of form. The last time I played I made 68 not out, that was in a one-day series against Zimbabwe. The time before that I got a golden duck, the time before that I got 161 not out. So in my last three bats I think Im doing okay.Clarke missed out on big scores in the four-day game against Pakistan A, managing just ten and five in the 153-run defeat in Sharjah. If Australia win the series 2-0, the second starting in Abu Dhabi from October 30, they will regain the number one rankings in Tests. But Clarke denied it was on his mind. I dont think thats our focus. Our focus is playing really good consistent cricket. We certainly know we have to continue to perform away from home. The great teams that Ive seen and been lucky enough to play with, they seem to have consistency at home and away.Misbah, also under pressure to score runs after managing just 67 in the 2-0 defeat in Sri Lanka in August, said spinners must exploit Australias frailties.Everybody knows that, said Misbah when asked of Australias weakness. But they have already proven that in the one-days they can be a really tough side so you cannot say that their record is poor so we can just go through them, you have to really play well, fight hard against them, said Misbah.Sri Lankan spinner Rangana Herath took 22 wickets in the two-match series against Pakistan.I think we have worked a lot on how to play spin, its not out of our minds and everyone knows that spin will play a major part in this series, especially in Dubai.
