13 killed in ambush in violent Mexican state

CULIACAN (AFP) - Gunmen ambushed a packed pick-up truck in northwestern Mexico, killing nine men and four women in a region plagued by drug cartel violence, authorities said Sunday. The attack took place on Saturday in a rural community of the municipality of San Ignacio at the border of the states of Sinaloa and Durango, prosecutors said.It was an ambush. They were waiting for them and when they were close they fired with AK-47 rifles, an official at the Sinaloa prosecutors office told AFP.The remote mountain region straddling the states of Sinaloa and Durango is where powerful drug kingpin Joaquin El Chapo Guzman hid after escaping from prison in July.Guzman, the head of the Sinaloa drug cartel, was recaptured in the Sinaloa seaside city of Los Mochis on January 8.One man who was wounded in Saturdays attack was taken to a hospital while another 36-year-old person was arrested for carrying a high-caliber firearm.San Ignacio Mayor Amado Loaiza Perez said the town is a transit point for drug gangs that hide in the mountains.More than 100,000 people have died or gone missing in a decade of drug violence in Mexico.

Flight turned back to Heathrow after 'laser' incident

LONDON (AFP) - A New York-bound flight turned back shortly after takeoff from Britains Heathrow Airport after a laser light was shone towards it, police said on Monday.Police responded to reports of a laser shone in the direction of a commercial flight that had taken off at Heathrow, on Sunday night, a spokesman said. The Virgin Atlantic flight from London to New York continued over Ireland before requesting to return, flight radar showed.A crew member told air traffic control there was a medical issue with one of the pilots after a laser incident after take-off according to flight radio recording. It is not unusual for lasers to be shone at flights in Britain with hundreds of such incidents recorded each year, according to the Civil Aviation Authority.A man was arrested earlier this month after a green laser was shone into the cockpits of passing planes over Kent in southeast England, according to police.Virgin Atlantic did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Australia crush New Zealand with day to spare

Posted:

WELLINGTON (AFP) - Australia inflicted a crushing innings defeat on New Zealand with a day to spare in the first Test in Wellington when they dismissed the home side for 327 on Monday. In a Test that will be remembered for two majestic innings by Adam Voges and Usman Khawaja, as well as an umpiring howler, Australia won by an innings and 52 runs.Nathan Lyon, Jackson Bird, Mitchell Marsh and Josh Hazlewood all shared the spoils as the last six New Zealand wickets fell for 149 on day four. New Zealand had been set a target of 379 just to get in credit in their second innings after Voges 239 set up Australias first innings of 562.The recognised New Zealand batsmen made starts, but were unable to turn them into big scores. After getting to 218-7 it was left to the last three batsmen to add 109 runs. Tim Southee was in a one-day mood with 48 off 23 and Mark Craig contributed an unbeaten 33.At the top of the order, Tom Latham scored 63 and Henry Nicholls, on debut, added 59 while Martin Guptill made 45 and Kane Williamson 22.Williamson and BJ Watling are renowned as doughty batsmen capable of occupying the crease for a long time but neither was able to live up to their reputation in the face of a tight bowling attack. Lyon occupied one end with his off-breaks and the quicks were rotated at the other with a plan for each of the batsmen.Watling has featured in two world-record stands for the sixth wicket at the Basin Reserve in the past two years. He batted for 510 minutes with Brendon McCullum in a 352-run stand that saved a Test against India in 2014 and last year batted for 479 minutes in an unbeaten 365-run stand with Williamson to beat Sri Lanka. But he was undone in 40 minutes by Australia when he attempted to cut a Lyon delivery and was beaten by the turn with the ball taking an inside edge to ricochet into the stumps.Nicholls resumed the day at 31 and won a battle of wits with Hazlewood who fired down a series of good length deliveries, seaming the ball away and tempting the left-hander to chase the shot. When Nicholls refused to take the bait, Hazlewood switched to a short delivery which was pulled to the square-leg boundary. Bird eventually claimed the 24-year-old with a good length delivery that bowled him as he tried to turn it to the on side.Southee and Craig delayed the inevitable, putting on 59 for the ninth wicket.Lyon finished with four for 91 as the most successful Australian bowler, while Mitchell Marsh took three for 73.Australia had been in charge of the Test from the time Steve Smith won the toss and New Zealand were out within two sessions on a green-topped wicket. As the wicket flattened out, Australia were able to score more freely with their cause helped by umpire Richard Illingworth wrongly calling no ball when Voges was bowled by Doug Bracewell on seven. The 36-year-old went on to make 239 and evoke comparisons with Donald Bradman, while Khawaja added 140 to have New Zealand effectively out of the game after the first innings. The second Test starts in Christchurch on Saturday and will be the last international for New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum.

Obama hosts South East Asian leaders at desert retreat

Posted:

RANCHO MIRAGE (AFP) - President Barack Obama looks to put domestic issues aside and cap his long courtship with fast-rising South East Asian nations Monday, hosting leaders at a California desert retreat.Obama welcomes representatives from 10 ASEAN countries to Sunnylands, a secluded 200 acre resort beloved by Frank Sinatra and US presidents since Dwight Eisenhower. The visitors may have preferred the cachet of a White House visit and an Oval Office photo-op. But, like his predecessors, Obama is fond of the dry air, clean skies and the verdant fairways of this golfing Mecca. Before sitting down at the summit table, Obama spent two days on the links. The White House sees this summit and the prestigious venue as an opportunity to show ASEANs importance before Obama leaves office in January 2017.Presidential trips to Vietnam and Laos are expected later this year to reinforce the point. They will have to try, however -- perhaps in vain -- to prevent the event from being overshadowed by the death of Supreme Court justice Antonin Scalia. The leaders of Vietnam and Myanmar, facing their own domestic challenges, have dropped out, electing to send deputies instead. The ASEAN bloc was once an afterthought in American policy -- too small, too diverse and too dysfunctional to be an effective player. But Obama -- who spent a few of his formative years in Indonesia -- has made it a fulcrum for his much-vaunted pivot to Asia. Now, ASEAN is of enormous interest to the United States, said top Obama foreign policy advisor Ben Rhodes. The 10 ASEAN nations together represent the worlds seventh largest economy. They are at the nexus of critical security issues, whether its maritime security, counterterrorism, or counter-piracy.Obamas administration has tried to bind ASEAN more tightly together, in part to serve as a counterpoint to China, the regions dominant power. The White House has actively coaxed countries like Myanmar away from dictatorship, making the bloc more democratic and more likely to back global norms.Obama is trying to create a strategic context for getting China to play by the rules, according to Earnest Bower of the Center for Strategic and International Studies.Down to businessAmericas superpower rival and sometime partner will be a presence throughout the Sunnylands summit, both seen and unseen.Leaders wondering among the palms and artichoke agaves will find a small red US-China Friendship Bench where Obama and President Xi Jinping sat for a shirtsleeves summit three years ago.During this summit, Obama and his counterparts will try to agree on how to deal with a myriad of competing maritime claims in the strategically vital South China Sea.Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines and Vietnam -- as well as China and Taiwan, who will not be represented at Sunnylands -- all lay claim to an array of remote reefs, spits, atolls and shoals that have become geopolitical hotspots. For decades there has been building and tinkering on the islets, but recent breakneck Chinese military construction has prompted fears of conflict.Officials and diplomats say a major aim of Monday and Tuesdays meetings is to agree on a response to a major UN panel ruling on the disputes that is expected within months. The Permanent Court of Arbitration will decide whether Chinas controversial territorial claim to a vast expanse of sea inside a nine dash line has any legal merit.A collective US-ASEAN endorsement of the courts verdict -- whatever the outcome --would heap pressure on China, which refuses to recognize the panel. The White House has tried, so far unsuccessfully, to cajole Beijing into stopping military work and committing to resolve any disputes by negotiation and following the rule of law.Backers hope that, if not immediately, then over time, the Chinese will not want to be isolated and an international pariah, a country that doesnt agree with international law, said Bower.Behind the scenes diplomatic manoeuvering is intense.Beijing has fiercely lobbied ASEAN nations without a direct stake in territorial disputes, notably Cambodia and Laos, to water-down any common position.Officials point to signs that China may be preparing to talk to Japan about disputes in the East China Sea in an effort to weaken pressure.

Darren Bravo pulls out of Windies T20 squad

ST. JOHNS (AFP) - Darren Bravo became the third man to withdraw from the West Indies World Twenty20 squad Sunday, but a bitter pay dispute appeared to have been settled after the remaining 12 players signed up for the March showpiece in India.Middle order batsman Bravo joins Sunil Narine and Kieron Pollard in pulling out of the original squad. But the 27-year-old, who has only played 12 international Twenty20 matches, said he withdrew to concentrate on the longer forms of the game.Im very grateful and humbled for the opportunity to represent the West Indies at the World Cup, Bravo said in a statement. However, Im of the firm belief that I have a very big part to play in the resurgence of West Indies cricket in the longer formats of the game and I will like the opportunity to play in our Professional Cricket League (PCL) because it will put me in good stead and will allow me to achieve those goals that I have aligned myself for the year 2016 and beyond.A replacement for Bravo is yet to be named while Ashley Nurse and Carlos Brathwaite have taken the places of Narine and Pollard.All-rounder Pollard pulled out on Friday due to injury while key off-spinner Narine said he was under-prepared as he serves out an international suspension for a suspect bowling action. The West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) said Sunday that they are now in receipt of 12 signed contracts from the other players who were selected for the tournament. They are skipper Darren Sammy, Sulieman Benn, Jason Holder, Andre Fletcher, Dwayne Bravo, Samuel Badree, Lendl Simmons, Jerome Taylor, Andre Russell, Marlon Samuels, Denesh Ramdin and star batsman Chris Gayle.Sunday was the deadline set for the players to sign deals after they had protested over alleged pay cuts for the March 8-April 3 event.Sammy claimed that players had been offered just $6,900 per match in India with around $27,600 to be made if a player featured throughout the tournament. In their 2012 T20 title winning campaign, the captain said payments ranged from almost $60,000 to more than $135,000.

De Villiers leads South Africa to series win

Posted:

CAPE TOWN (AFP) - South African captain AB de Villiers hit a century and took his side to a series victory in the fifth and final one-day international against England at Newlands on Sunday.De Villiers made an unbeaten 101 as South Africa chased down a target of 237 with five wickets and six overs to spare. For the third successive match, an English batsman made a century but finished on the losing side. Opening batsman Alex Hales hit 112 but lacked significant support from his teammates as England were bowled out for 236 after being sent in to bat.The win completed a remarkable turnaround for South Africa after they had been well beaten in the first two matches. It also marked a return to his best form for De Villiers, who had not scored a century in seven Test and four one-day innings against the tourists.Ive been a little bit off my game in the last month so its nice to finish off like that, said de Villiers. Its an integral part of being the captain and leading from the front, not just in the field, its getting runs. I didnt think we were that far off in the first two ODIs.England skipper Eoin Morgan admitted his side had been defeated by the better team.We were outplayed today, said Morgan. We did have chances earlier in the series to win it but we werent quite able to take the opportunities that came. Were a young side, we created opportunities but it wasnt quite enough.De Villiers walked out to bat with his side in trouble at 22 for three, with all the wickets falling to left-arm opening bowler Reece Topley. But De Villiers and Hashim Amla regained control for South Africa with a fourth wicket stand of 125.Amla made a relatively restrained 59 off 93 balls and was content to let De Villiers do the bulk of the scoring before he charged a wide ball from Moeen Ali and was stumped.De Villiers went on to make his 22nd one-day international century and batted for 97 balls, hitting 11 fours and a six.Hales second one-day international century capped a fine series for the tall right-hander, who had made fifties in each of the previous four matches, including an innings of 99 in the second game in Port Elizabeth. He finished the series with 383 runs at an average of 76.60 and was named man of the series.Joe Root (27) and Ben Stokes (29) were the only other England batsmen to reach 20.Hales and Root put on 61 for the second wicket, their fifth successive partnership of 50 or more, before Root was trapped leg before wicket by leg-spinner Imran Tahir. Root made 351 runs in the series at an average of 70.20.Tahir took the first two wickets, dismissing Jason Roy leg before wicket after being brought on in the fifth over. Tahir ended the innings by having Stuart Broad caught at mid-off to finish with three for 53.Kagiso Rabada and David Wiese also took three wickets each, for 34 and 50 runs respectively.Topley gained significant swing at the start of the South African reply and dismissed Quinton de Kock, Faf du Plessis and Rilee Rossouw in an opening spell of three for 21 in five overs. He was less effective when he came back later, finishing with three for 41 in seven overs.

India trounce Sri Lanka to clinch T20 series 2-1

Posted:

VISAKHAPATNAM (AFP) - Premier off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwins four-wicket haul helped India crush Sri Lanka by nine wickets in the third T20 international as the hosts clinched the series 2-1 in Visakhapatnam on Sunday.Electing to bowl on what seemed like a flat deck, Ashwin (4-8) managed his best bowling figures in T20 cricket to skittle out the visitors for 82 in 18 overs -- their lowest score in the shortest format.Chasing a modest target, India cantered home in 13.5 overs to hold on to their top spot in T20s and continue their winning run before the Asia Cup and the World T20.It was Indias night all the way after Ashwin, who was given the new ball by skipper MS Dhoni, struck twice in the very first over to remove the Sri Lankan openers.Already fielding a depleted side, the visiting batsmen struggled against a disciplined Indian attack, which had the right mix of youth and experience. The Sri Lankan scorecard painted a sorry picture with just Dasun Shanaka (19) and Tisara Perera (12) managing double figures as the rest of the batting collapsed.Sri Lanka though had a few moments to enjoy after top-scorer Shanaka smashed a couple of sixes during his 24-ball stay, but the visitors suffered from lack of partnerships.Part-time spinner Suresh Raina also chipped in with two wickets.India probably ticked all the boxes after their opening loss in Pune to not only bowl or bat well, but also get their fielding act together in the three-match series.Indias ground fielding was highlighted by Jadeja running out Seekkuge Prasanna with a direct throw. With most of the pressure off their back, the Indian batsmen did their job to bring up another T20 series win after their 3-0 triumph in Australia recently. Opener Shikhar Dhawan, who hit a maiden T20 fifty in the teams last win on Friday, continued his fine run with an unbeaten 46 to help the hosts register their biggest T20 win in terms of balls remaining.Rohit Sharma was cleaned up by Dushmantha Chameera but that was only a hiccup in Indias march towards victory as Dhawan and Ajinkya Rahane put on an unbeaten 55-run stand.Dhawan remained the top-scorer in the series with 106 runs from three games while Ashwin was named the man of the series for his nine wickets. It was Dhonis first T20 bi-lateral series win on home soil as the World Twenty20 hosts hammered home their status as one of the favourites for the title in March.
