Tennis: Sharapova named in Russian Fed Cup team, stays on road to Rio

Posted:

MOSCOW (AFP) - Maria Sharapova remained on course for the Rio Olympics as the five-time Grand Slam champion was on Friday named in Russias doubles team for their Fed Cup first-round tie against the Netherlands in Moscow this weekend.World number 31 Ekaterina Makarova will take on 106th-ranked Kiki Bertens in the opening singles of the World Group clash on the hardcourt of Moscows Olympic indoor arena from 1100 GMT on Saturday.Russias two-time Grand Slam champion Svetlana Kuznetsova, 17th in the world, will then face 141st-ranked Richel Hogenkamp. In Sundays reverse singles, Kuznetsova will face off against Bertens and Makarova will then take on Hogenkamp.Russian team skipper Anastasia Myskina then announced the countrys top-ranked player Sharapova, the world number six, will play in the ties concluding doubles rubber alongside 18-year-old Darya Kasatkina. They will face Dutch pair Arantxa Rus and Cindy Burger.Myskina, the 2004 French Open champion, said that she expected a tough match against the Dutch.Weve prepared well for this match but I expect a very tough opposition this weekend, Myskina told reporters following the draw.Netherlands were victorious in their last Fed Cup matches. Theyre in good form and brave mood. Its unlikely to be easy. But I hope we will do enough.Sharapova, who is struggling with a forearm injury suffered at last months Australian Open, said she wasnt about to call time on her Fed Cup career. Our team is strong and any of our girls are capable of winning their rubbers, she said.I dont know how long I will be able to play tennis but I will definitely continue to play for my country. The worlds richest sportswoman will remain on course for this summers Olympic Games even if she doesnt step out on court against the Netherlands.Under qualification rules, a player must be nominated three times in an Olympic cycle in order to be eligible for the Games in Rio in August. So far, the 28-year-old star has featured in just two ties since 2012, the year when she won the silver medal at the London Olympics. The International Tennis Federation (ITF), which oversees the Fed Cup, said that Sharapova did not necessarily need to play the tie in order to fulfil her Olympic criteria. The Olympic tennis event qualification regulations require a player to be in the nominated Fed Cup team at the time of the draw on three occasions, a spokesman told AFP on the eve of the draw for the tie.A player does not need to play a match.Sharapova won all four Fed Cup rubbers she played in 2015 including the two singles matches in the final which Russia lost 3-2 to the Czech Republic.

Football: Sheikh Salman's FIFA bid gets African boost

Posted:

KIGALI (AFP) - Sheikh Salman bin Ebrahim al-Khalifas bid to take over as FIFA president received a massive boost on Friday with the Asian football chief getting the powerful backing of the African continent. The Confederation of African Football (CAF) agreed to support the Bahrainis bid to succeed Sepp Blatter as president of world governing body FIFA in an election in Zurich later this month. The executive committee decided that CAF will give full support to Sheikh Salman with his candidacy for FIFA presidency, CAF first vice-president Suketu Patel said after an executive committee meeting during the African Nations Championship tournament in Kigali.CAF second vice-president Almamy Kabele Camara said the decision to support the 50-year-old Asian Football Confederation (AFC) president had been reached unanimously.I am proud, of course, said Sheikh Salman briefly afterwards. If I have the support and trust, I have to be.Already considered as one of the leading candidates to succeed Blatter along with Swiss Gianni Infantino, the UEFA number two, Sheikh Salman now takes the mantle of favourite.Africa traditionally play the role of kingmakers in FIFA with 54 votes, the most of any of the worlds regional governing bodies, with the CAF recommendations generally respected to the letter.European body UEFA have 53 votes, Asia (46), Concacaf (North, Central American and Caribbean (35), Oceania (11) and South America (10).Proof of the importance of Africa, four of the five contenders came to the Rwandan capital seeking to win the support of the continent -- Sheikh Salman, Infantino, South African businessman Tokyo Sexwale and Frenchman Jerome Champagne, a former assistant secretary-general of FIFA.Prince Ali bin al-Hussein of Jordan was the only candidate not to attend after recently denouncing a possible attempt to breach the election rules after CAF signed a January 15 agreement with the AFC to organise tournaments and programmes for technical development. The agreement and the decision to support Sheikh Salman is a sign of the growing links between the African and Asian governing bodies with Qatar offering to organise the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations in place of Morocco amid the deadly Ebola pandemic. The competition was finally hosted in Equatorial Guinea. This was in the air a little bit in recent days, it was an open secret, said Infantino, reacting to the CAF decision.Nevertheless, he said he was more than ever in the race and very, very confident.CAFs decision is however a blow for the continents only candidate Sexwale whose low-profile campaign had caused concerns in the South African Football Association (SAFA), and raises questions over his possible withdrawal in favour of Sheikh Salman. The South African businessman, a former anti-apartheid prisoner alongside Nelson Mandela, himself opened the door to this possibility last week by declaring that he would do everything so that the FIFA president would be from either Africa or Asia, but not Europe. The time for alliances is... coming, and its healthy, its democratic and its good, he said. Now we are talking... we are brothers, we are colleagues.A possible stumbling block for Sheikh Salmans campaign are criticisms from human rights groups over his alleged role in the repression of pro-democratic demonstrations in 2011 in Bahrain and the use of torture, claims he denies.Another weak point, his possible accession to the top job in FIFA could put the spotlight on the awarding of the 2022 World Cup to Qatar of which he was a strong supporter.FIFAs 209 member associations will vote at a special congress in Zurich on February 26 for a successor for Blatter, who stepped down and was subsequently banned for eight years, following corruption allegations which have engulfed footballs governing body.

Football: United can still fight for title says, van Gaal

Posted:

MANCHESTER (AFP) - Louis van Gaal believes Manchester United can still force their way into the Premier League title race after playing sparkling football in their last two games.United manager van Gaal has been under pressure for much of the season due to his teams dour performances and inconsistent resultsBut the Dutchman believes a victory at Chelsea on Sunday would underline why he is so confident and set United up for a late challenge to the top four clubs.United are still five points behind fourth-placed Arsenal and 10 adrift of league leaders Leicester, who play second-placed Manchester City on Saturday. However, van Gaals side have lost only one of their last eight games in all competitions and, after beating Derby 3-1 in the FA Cup, produced one of their best performances of the season to defeat Stoke 3-0 in the league at Old Trafford on Tuesday. We dont have to exaggerate but I have the feeling if we shall beat Chelsea, although that is very difficult because under Guus Hiddink they dont lose, then I think our league is starting again, van Gaal told reporters on Friday.Michael Carrick said to me and I have the same feeling, the competition is not yet finished, not for Manchester United or the other teams. We have the feeling, and thats because we are winning twice in a row with sparkling football, with goals, clean sheets and against opponents who were in great form after Stoke City played Liverpool off the pitch in the League Cup but then lost on penalties.I have said always that only Crystal Palace and Arsenal this season were better than Manchester United this season.I have said that so there is nothing different in my feeling. But we have to show in a run of games that you win, because in this competition everything is possible.United still have five players out injured for the trip to face 13th placed Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, with Bastian Schweinsteiger, Ashley Young, Marcos Rojo, Luke Shaw and Antonio Valencia. But van Gaal believes an improvement in the injury situation has helped his side rediscover some of their early season form which included a run of four wins in five Premier League wins up to mid-October.I dont want to hide behind injuries, but when you have five or six injuries in the same position, you cannot hide, and you have to solve problems you cannot solve, he said. But players are coming back now. They are fit and I can continue how we started the season. Maybe you remember we were first in the Premier League in that period? When you are on a row of four defeats, you cant say that.England international Shaw is one of Uniteds long-term absentees, having not played since suffering a double leg break in a Champions League tie against PSV Eindhoven in September. But van Gaal believes the left-back could play again this season and has offered him the incentive of targeting a possible place in the Europa League final in Basel on May 18.The United manager, whose side faces a last-32 tie in the competition against Danish champions Midtjylland later this month, said: He can play the final, that is a goal that he has to live for.In my opinion it is not impossible. It gives him the spirit to come back.

Football: Arsenal look to rekindle title push at Bournemouth

Posted:

BOURNEMOUTH (AFP) - Arsene Wenger believes up to six clubs are still involved in the Premier League title race and admits his Arsenal side must end their frustrating recent run if they are to revive their challenge.Wengers side travel to face Bournemouth on Sunday looking for a first league win in five games. The midweek scoreless home draw with Southampton meant the Gunners have taken just three points for the last four games to leave them in fourth place, five points adrift of leaders Leicester City. And alarmingly for the manager, the north London club have failed to score in their last three league games. With the title race the most open it has been in years, Wenger acknowledges his side cannot afford to lose more ground. The Arsenal manager said: We are in a position where we have to come back first - to win games - which we havent been doing recently. We have to look at the facts as they are. We havent won in four games. We want to get back to winning and then look at the results of the others. Look at yourself and get back to what you want to do, and to do that you have to win your next game. You look at the table and you can say as many as five or six (can win it). It makes it interesting - even if we would love it to be a bit less interesting but it is the case and we have to deal with that.Every season is special and we have gone through a bad patch but to fight for the Premier League, you have to be capable of dealing with that.Wenger admits his side has appeared nervous at times, but believes there were promising signs against Southampton and is convinced the current goal-drought will soon come to an end.He added: Against Southampton, we created the chances and couldnt finish them off. I believe overall, we should not be alarmed, because the quality of our performance was there in every single game.We should take a lot of encouragement from that, even if sometimes in the recent games, we didnt get the result we wanted. We have to prepare without being obsessed with (scoring) - finishing is cyclic and if we create the same amount of chances we will score.Arsenal will face a Bournemouth side high on confidence after the midweek win at Crystal Palace that was capped by a third goal in four games for January recruit Benik Afobe.Afobe was connected with Arsenal from the age of six before being allowed to leave for Wolverhampton Wanderers 13 months ago and Wenger insists he is pleased to see the 22-year-old doing so well. The manager said: You educate people to influence their lives and give them success, that is what we do. When they do not manage to play for us, if they do it somewhere else we are of course very happy for them.Benik has done extremely well, even beyond the expectations of many people and thats great, thats down to him and congratulations to him.The victory over Palace took Eddie Howes side to 28 points, seven points clear of the bottom three, but the Bournemouth manager warned against setting a survival target of 40 points.Howe said: Were conscious of people setting 40 points but we havent set any targets. Were working towards goals, but its very dangerous to set 40 points as it could be more this year.Id say were more confident now than the last time we played against Arsenal, the run weve had and the importance of the fixtures weve been able to win has given us a renewed belief to compete against the very best sides.

Edgar Mitchell, astronaut who walked on Moon, dead at 85

Posted:

MIAMI (AFP) - US astronaut Edgar Mitchell, one of just 12 people to have walked on the Moon, has died aged 85, his family and NASA said Friday, calling him a pioneer.NASA paid glowing tribute to Mitchell, who died in Florida after a brief illness late Thursday, the eve of the 45th anniversary of his lunar landing. The late astronaut was a member of the 1971 Apollo 14 mission along with Alan Shepard Jr. and Stuart Roosa.Mitchell was the last Apollo 14 survivor: Roosa died in 1994 and Shepard in 1998.Speaking in a 1997 interview for NASAs oral history program, Mitchell said that he was drawn to spaceflight after president John F. Kennedys call to send astronauts to the Moon. Thats what I wanted because it was the bear going over the mountain to see what he could see, and what could you learn, and Ive been devoted to that, to exploration, education and discovery since my earliest years, and thats what kept me going, Mitchell said.NASA Administrator Charles Bolden recalled Mitchell marveling at the stunning view of Earth from space.Edgar spoke poetically about seeing our home planet from the Moon saying, Suddenly, from behind the rim of the Moon, in long, slow-motion moments of immense majesty, there emerges a sparkling blue and white jewel, a light, delicate sky-blue sphere laced with slowly swirling veils of white, rising gradually like a small pearl in a thick sea of black mystery. It takes more than a moment to fully realize this is Earth... home.Bolden added: He is one of the pioneers in space exploration on whose shoulders we now stand.Buzz Aldrin, the second person on the Moon, echoed that on Twitter, calling Mitchell a lunar pioneer. The Apollo 14 mission -- Mitchells only spaceflight -- began when the trio blasted off from Cape Canaveral, Florida, on January 31, 1971.Mitchell was in charge of piloting the Antares lunar module, which landed in the Fra Mauro region of the Moon.It was the third manned mission to the Moon and Mitchell became the sixth human to walk on the lunar surface.During the mission the astronauts collected 100 pounds (40 kilos) of lunar rock samples and carried out a series of experiments. The mission ended when the astronauts, traveling aboard a space capsule, splashed down in the Pacific Ocean on February 9, 1971.In 1972 Mitchell retired from NASA and the following year he founded the Institute of Noetic Sciences, dedicated to the study of consciousness and paranormal phenomena. He said he believed that extra-terrestrial unidentified flying objects (UFOs) had visited the Earth, but acknowledged that he had never seen one.Mitchell was the author of several books, including his 1996 memoir, The Way of the Explorer. Two daughters, three adopted sons and nine grandchildren are among family who survive him.The family told The Palm Beach Post newspaper that Mitchell died at a West Palm Beach hospital after a short illness.

New Zealand opt to bat in second Australia ODI

WELLINGTON (AFP) - New Zealand won the toss and elected to bat in the second one-day international against Australia in Wellington on Saturday.A win for New Zealand, who have an unchanged side, would give them the series and the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy with a game to spare following their 159-run victory in the first game on Wednesday.Australia have made three changes. Two were confirmed well before the game with Usman Khawaja and Adam Zampa in for Shaun Marsh and the injured James Faulkner.Shortly before the toss, Kane Richardson left the field with a sore back and has been replaced by Scott Boland.Australias top order collapsed spectacularly in the first game and they will be looking to Khawaja to give them a solid start in partnership with David Warner.New Zealand have an impressive record at Westpac Stadium where they skittled England for 123 in the World Cup last year and where Martin Guptill clouted an unbeaten 237 against the West Indies.Captain Brendon McCullum said that was one reason for deciding to bat first. Its just a good wicket. Its the same one where we played the West Indies in the World Cup quarter-final which was obviously a run fest.TeamsNew Zealand - Brendon McCullum (capt), Martin Guptill, Kane Williamson, Henry Nicholls, Corey Anderson, Grant Elliott, Luke Ronchi, Mitchell Santner, Adam Milne, Matt Henry, Trent Boult.Australia - David Warner, Usman Khawaja, Steve Smith (capt), George Bailey, Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Marsh, Matthew Wade, Adam Zampa, John Hastings, Scott Boland, Josh Hazlewood.Umpires: Bill Bowden (NZL), Sundaram Ravi (IND).TV umpire: Ian Gould (ENG).Match referee: Chris Broad (ENG).

The Monkees return with new album, tour

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - The Monkees, the original reality TV stars whose band was conceived as a show, are returning with a new album and tour for their 50th anniversary. The album announced Friday, entitled Good Times, will be the first by The Monkees in 20 years and features tracks written by others for the classic band. The songwriters include legendary singer and contemporary Neil Diamond as well as prominent alternative rockers such as Weezers Rivers Cuomo and Ben Gibbard, frontman of Death Cab for Cutie. The album, which comes out on June 10, comes despite the death of The Monkees most prominent member, Davy Jones, in 2012, although the band said that his voice will still appear on one song.Only two of the original Monkees will take part in the tour -- Micky Dolenz and Peter Tork. The third surviving member, Michael Nesmith, participated in the album but will not tour. Nesmith has had friction with the bandmates over the years as he grew disgruntled with the bands overwhelming commercial nature and the artistic control over the group.Conceived as Beatlemania swept the United States, The Monkees starred in a television show from 1966 to 1968 about four men trying to make it as rockers in Los Angeles. The Monkees released a string of hits while the show was on the air including Last Train to Clarksville, Daydream Believer and Im a Believer, which was written by Diamond. The band eventually grew out of the television show and created its own music, enjoying a revival starting in the late 1980s.The band has periodically toured without releasing new material, even after Jones death. The latest tour will open on May 18 in Fort Myers, Florida and continue with breaks throughout the United States and Canada before closing on October 29 at Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania.

Oil ends lower on supply glut concerns

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - Oil prices dropped Friday, leaving the market lower for the week, as a prolonged supply glut weighed on sentiment.US benchmark West Texas Intermediate (WTI) for delivery in March fell 83 cents to $30.89 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. In London, Brent North Sea crude for April delivery, the European benchmark for crude oil, finished at $34.06 a barrel, down 40 cents from Thursdays settlement.Fridays fall closed a volatile week that left WTI and Brent down about two percent and five percent for the period, respectively. The market had made gains over the prior two weeks. The volatility came amid speculation about a potential meeting between Russia and OPEC that whetted hopes for an agreement that would reduce crude production. Oil prices ended higher only Wednesday this week, when traders gave some credence to the speculation.News Friday that the number of oil rigs in the field in the United States dropped sharply last week, by 31 rigs as reported by Baker Hughes, did not brighten the markets outlook.WTI couldnt maintain a rise even with the rig count, said John Kilduff of Again Capital, pointing to incredibly negative fundamentals. Were not seeing anything to pull the market out of its nosedive, he added.

Dollar up as US jobs data leaves Fed rate hike in play

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - The dollar climbed against the euro Friday after a US jobs report showed that unemployment ticked lower and wage growth rose, supporting the Federal Reserves plan to raise interest rates. The keenly awaited January jobs report, the first since the Fed began raising rates in December, delivered mostly positive news, apart from a slowdown in job creation. The dollar initially fell on the 151,000 jobs added, but bounced higher as traders looked beyond the weaker-than-expected headline number and to a fall in the jobless rate to 4.9 percent from 5.0 percent in December.Around 2200 GMT, the greenback was trading 5.1 percent higher against the euro at $1.1158. It also rose against the yen and the pound, but slipped a tick on the Swiss franc.Although job growth slowed materially in the month of January, the greenback traded higher against most of the major currencies on the back of a lower unemployment rate and higher wages, said Kathy Lien of BK Asset Management. The Federal Reserve may be worried about global market volatility and low commodity prices but it will be difficult for them to ignore an unemployment rate below five percent and earnings growth at its strongest level in a year, she said.Traders were looking ahead to Fed Chair Janet Yellens twice-yearly testimony to Congress on Wednesday and Thursday on the state of the US economy and monetary policy. Her testimony will be important as it will provide a good opportunity for the Fed to give indications of how much the Feds outlook has been affected by weak data and the tightening of financial conditions, said Charles St-Arnaud of Nomura Global FX Research. Our economist expects her remarks to suggest the Fed has downgraded somewhat its economic assessment to incorporate the economic data received since the December FOMC, but that she will remain cautiously optimistic on the medium-term outlook. If Yellen gives those signals, he said, it could be positive for the dollar in the short term.

Windies coach defends 'Mankad' in U19 trophy

Posted:

DHAKA (AFP) - West Indies coach Dwain Gill Friday defended a controversial run-out at the ICC Under-19 World Cup which sparked a furore on social media, saying the Mankad was well within the rules.Zimbabwe needed only three runs in the final over with one wicket in hand in Tuesdays game in the Bangladesh city of Chittagong when Keemo Paul ran Richard Ngarava out without entering his delivery stride, scuppering the African minnows hopes of a surprise place in the quarter-finals.The umpires, who initially did not give the decision, asked the West Indies players if they wanted to uphold the appeal and after receiving confirmation, the matter was referred to the third umpire which confirmed that Ngaravas bat was not behind the line.Such a dismissal is popularly known as Mankading in cricket referring to Indian left-arm spinner Vinoo Mankad, who dismissed Australian batsman Bill Brown twice in such a fashion in 1947.I mean, a law is a law, right? Gill told AFP when asked for a comment on the controversy ahead of his teams quarter-final clash against Pakistan on Monday. But Australian coach Darren Lehmann, England one-day international captain Eoin Morgan and former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming led a chorus of outrage against the dismissal, labelling the West Indies actions disgraceful on Twitter. This is not a good look. absolutely disgraceful behaviour Fleming posted on the microblogging site. Disgraceful behaviour in the U19CWC. WIs should be embarrassed Morgan tweeted. But some former players and coaches defended the Mankad. If it is in the rule book it is all about personal decision making, Bangladesh coach Chandika Hathurusinghe told AFP on Friday. The International Cricket Council refused to make any comment on dismissal but referred to a statement its cricket committee chief Anil Kumble made in 2014.The Law strikes a sensible balance between preventing a batsman from gaining an advantage whilst at the same time preventing the bowler from unfairly seducing the batsman into leaving his crease by faking to deliver and then holding on to the ball, that statement said.
