Recognised Libya govt condemns US strike on jihadists

Posted:

TRIPOLI (AFP) - Libyas internationally recognised government Saturday condemned a US air strike west of Tripoli believed to have killed a top Islamic State group operative and dozens of others the previous day.In a statement, the government, based in the far east of the country, denounced the raid targeting an IS training camp in Sabratha, saying it was not coordinated with the authorities and was a clear and flagrant violation of sovereignty of the Libyan state.Fridays US air strike was believed to have killed Noureddine Chouchane, suspected of being behind the mass murder of tourists on a Tunisian beach, but it also killed two kidnapped Serbian embassy employees.US officials said Chouchane, also known as Sabir, had been planning attacks against American and other Western interests along with other jihadists.Chouchane is suspected of being behind both the beach attack in July 2015 near the Tunisian city of Sousse that killed 38 tourists, including 30 Britons, and an attack on the National Bardo Museum in Tunis that killed 21 tourists and a policeman in March 2015.Both attacks were claimed by IS.Oil-rich Libya has had rival administrations since the summer of 2014.The internationally recognised government fled Tripoli after a militia alliance including Islamists overran the capital in August that year. The alliance has established its own administration and parliament called the General National Congress. The United Nations is pushing both sides to back a unity government to tackle jihadists and people-smugglers.

Football: Suarez, Neymar open up nine-point Barca lead

Posted:

MADRID (AFP) - Barcelona moved nine points clear at the top of La Liga thanks to first-half goals from Luis Suarez and Neymar despite an unconvincing display in a 2-1 win at Las Palmas on Saturday.Suarez opened the scoring early on with his 41st goal of the season, but Willian Jose deservedly levelled for the hosts inside 10 minutes.Neymar restored the lead from close range before the break, but the European champions had to withstand a late onslaught from the Canary Islanders to stretch their unbeaten run in all competitions to 32 games.Barcas closest challengers Atletico Madrid can cut the gap when they host Villarreal, whilst third-placed Real Madrid, who are now 10 points adrift of Barca, travel to Malaga on Sunday. To win titles you have to suffer and weve now had a couple of games away from home where we have struggled, Suarez told Canal Plus.It is always nice to play in a different way and win games easily, but these are the games which win you the league.Despite facing Arsenal in the Champions League on Tuesday, Barcelona boss Luis Enrique rested only Gerard Pique, whilst Sergio Busquets was also suspended from the side that is expected to start at the Emirates. The star trio of Lionel Messi, Suarez and Neymar started once more and bore fruit after just six minutes as Suarez extended his lead over Cristiano Ronaldo as La Ligas top scorer with his 25th Liga goal of the campaign.Andres Iniestas perfectly weighted pass freed Jordi Alba down the left and his low cross was fired into the roof of the net by Suarez at the back post. However, just as in their win at Sporting Gijon in midweek, Barca conceded minutes after scoring the opener as Jonthan Vieras brilliant backheel teed up Jose to drive home the equaliser.Unlike the majority of Barcas opponents, Las Palmas were determined to take the game to the visitors, but in doing so left themselves exposed at the back against the most feared attacking trio in the world.Javi Varas made fine saves to deny Messi and Andres Iniesta in quick succession before Suarez somehow headed wide when completely unmarked from Messis free-kick.However, the former Liverpool striker redeemed himself with brilliant play down the right in the build-up to Barcas second as from his cutback Varas again denied Messi, but the ball fell perfectly for Neymar to slam home the rebound.Suarez had a golden chance to put the game to bed after the break as Varas made another remarkable save from point-blank range after a great knockdown by Dani Alves. And with Barca tiring in the final quarter, Las Palmas had a host of chances to snatch a point.Firstly, Claudio Bravo dived to his left to parry Vieras effort before Jose fired into the side-netting.Sergio Araujo came closest to an equaliser when his shot across Bravo flew inches past the far post and the Argentine had another great chance a minute from time when he couldnt divert a loose ball inside the are on target with Bravo flapping. However, it was Barca who should have set the seal on an eighth consecutive league win when Neymar fired straight at Varas with just the keeper to beat in stoppage time.

Football: Albion star Brunt pelted with coins by own fans

LONDON (AFP) - West Bromwich Albion defender Chris Brunt was pelted with coins by his own clubs fans after their surprise FA Cup fifth round defeat at Reading on Saturday.Brunt had gone over to applaud Albions travelling fans following their 3-1 loss to the second tier side, but the mood turned sour and he went down clutching his face as coins rained down from angry supporters.Northern Ireland international Brunt then confronted a group of Albion fans before being led away by captain Darren Fletcher after giving his shirt to a supporter. The 31-year-old said a coin had been thrown at him and was quick to condemn the fans behaviour.I was walking towards our supporters at the end, and they thought it was okay to throw a coin at their own players. Im disgusted, Brunt told BBC Sport. If they want to come forward and say they dont like what theyve seen then thats fine. Fans are frustrated we were 1-0 up and lost. They paid a lot of money to come, but a small minority spoilt it. There were young kids there. I was absolutely disgusted and ashamed.

Russia pledges more Syria raids, opposition sets truce terms

Posted:

BEIRUT (AFP) - Russia pledged Saturday to continue backing Syrian government forces against terrorism, as a key opposition group said it would support a proposed truce only if regime supporters halted their fire.World powers have been pushing for a so-called cessation of hostilities to pave the way for renewed negotiations to end Syrias war, nearly five years after it began. But the truce has proved elusive so far, failing to emerge by Friday as originally proposed, even as fighting has intensified on the ground and tensions have risen between Russia and opposition backer Turkey.Russia said UN-led talks on the ceasefire scheduled for Saturday had been postponed to an unspecified later date, raising fresh concerns about whether the truce could be implemented.Russian and US officials met on Friday to try to hammer out the details of the proposed ceasefire, but have yet to outline any concrete proposals.- Opposition sets truce terms -The head of the key High Negotiations Committee (HNC) opposition umbrella group said in statement that it would agree to a temporary truce only if regime backers halted fire.Riad Hijab said any ceasefire must be reached with international mediation and with guarantees obliging Russia, Iran and their sectarian militias and mercenaries to stop fighting. The statement, issued after a meeting of the HNC, said the opposition wants to respond positively to international efforts to stop the Syrian bloodbath.But... there will not be a truce unless fighting stops simultaneously on the part of all the belligerents, sieges are lifted, humanitarian aid is delivered to those in need, and prisoners, particularly women and children, are released, it said. But on the ground, there has been little sign that the various parties to the increasingly complicated conflict are preparing to halt operations.Turkey again shelled Kurdish-led forces on Saturday, a day after the United Nations Security Council rejected a Russian bid to halt Turkish military action in Syria.Moscow expressed regret that the resolution had been rejected, and said it was concerned at the growing tension at the Syrian-Turkish border.Turkey has been firing artillery rounds into Syrias northern Aleppo province for the last week, in a bid to stem the advances of a Kurdish-led coalition that has seized territory from rebels.Ankara is a key backer of the Syrian opposition, and is fiercely opposed to both President Bashar al-Assads regime and the powerful Syrian Kurdish Peoples Protection Units (YPG) militia. It accuses the YPG of being the Syrian affiliate of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party, which has waged a decades-long insurgency against Ankara. The YPG is the leading component of a joint Kurdish-Arab force that has swept through parts of northern Aleppo province in recent days, taking territory from rebels that Turkey backs. The advance by the Syrian Democratic Forces alliance has angered Turkey, which fears the Kurds are trying to unite several Kurdish-majority regions in north and northeastern Syria to create a contiguous zone on the border.- Peace talks resumption delayed -Meanwhile, Syrian regime forces have also advanced in Aleppo province, backed by air strikes by Russia which began an aerial campaign in support of the government in September. On Saturday, government troops seized 18 villages around the road east from Aleppo city towards the Islamic State group stronghold of Raqa, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitor said. The advances secure the regimes grip on a stretch of some 40 kilometres (25 miles) of the highway, which passes by the Kweyris military airport that government forces recaptured with Russian help in November.Moscow said Saturday it would continue to provide assistance and help to the armed forces of Syria in their offensive actions against terrorists.Russia says its strikes target terrorists, but the opposition and its backers accuse Moscow of focusing on moderate and Islamist rebels rather than jihadists such as IS.More than 260,000 people have been killed in Syria since the conflict began, with half the population displaced, including over four million overseas. The most recent attempt to find a political solution to the war collapsed earlier this month, with UN envoy Staffan de Mistura initially proposing a February 25 date for talks to try to resume. But he acknowledged on Friday that the date was no longer realistically possible, and that at least 10 days of preparations were still needed.
