Football: United stroll provides welcome tonic for Van Gaal

Posted:

MANCHESTER (AFP) - Manchester United produced one of their best performances under beleaguered boss Louis van Gaal as they lifted the gloom around Old Trafford with a 3-0 win over Stoke on Tuesday.Van Gaals side equalled their biggest Premier League win of the season thanks to goals from Jesse Lingard, Anthony Martial and Wayne Rooney. And the timing couldnt have been better as United delivered a strong performance 24 hours after the high-profile appointment of Pep Guardiola as manager of their bitter rivals Manchester City.Guardiolas impending arrival in the close-season as the replacement for Manuel Pellegrini is designed to make City the dominant force not only in Manchester but also in Europe.United look to be in danger of falling behind their neighbours as they struggle to even qualify for next seasons Champions League, while question marks persist over their managerial position.Van Gaal was booed by Uniteds supporters after their last home game - a 1-0 defeat to Southampton. But the Dutchman has clung onto his job and this result - allied to a superb attacking performance - keeps them within five points of the top four places and should buy van Gaal a little breathing space. United had won just two of their previous 10 league games and scored only 11 home goals.Their total of 27 goals in total at this stage of the season was their lowest since 1989-90 when they finished 13th in the top flight and Mark Hughes finished as top scorer with 15 goals.Hughes was back on his old stamping ground as Stoke manager, but it was not a happy homecoming as his 100th Premier League match in charge of the Potters ended in a chastening defeat and prolonged Stokes winless record at Old Trafford, which stretches back 40 years.A victory over United on Boxing Day, which threatened to push Van Gaal close to the exit door, gave Stoke the chance to complete the double over United for the first time since 1952-53.But that never looked likely as United raced into a 2-0 lead inside the first 23 minutes.United showed their intent from the start as they created more chances than they had in most of their home games put together. And they went ahead in the 13-minute when teenage full-back Cameron Borthwick-Jackson crossed for Lingard to stoop and head in his third goal of the season.Martial then fired into the side netting and forced Jack Butland into a save before he scored a superb goal to take his total for the season to nine.United launched a lightning break, bringing back memories of some of their finest football under Alex Ferguson, which ended with Rooney teeing up Martial to curl a superb right-footed shot into the top corner.Stoke, unable to use record signing Giannelli Imbula after his late arrival on Monday, couldnt handle Juan Mata, who excelled in a central position and could have had a hat-trick as he saw efforts blocked and headed wide from a Matteo Darmian cross.Jon Walters did go close for the visitors, whose season is falling apart around them after two cup exits in a week and a third league game without a win, as he volleyed over before the break. But they had no answer to a classy United performance which included a goal from Rooney after the break. The United and England captain had an effort disallowed as he barged over Phil Bardsley in the build-up.But Rooney wouldnt be denied a seventh goal in as many games as he tapped in a Martial cross following another flowing move with 53 minutes gone. And as United made a long overdue statement of intent they almost added a fourth when substitute Memphis Depay hit the bar with an angled shot late on.

Football: Aguero strikes as Man City stay in touch

Posted:

SUNDERLAND (AFP) - Sergio Agueros 12th goal in 10 Premier League games gave Manchester City a narrow 1-0 victory at Sunderland on Tuesday in their first game since Pep Guardiolas arrival as manager was announced. The visitors went ahead 16 minutes into the game with a classy bit of finishing from Aguero and at that stage the travelling fans might have expected their side to cruise to a similar scoreline to the 4-1 win recorded when the two sides met earlier this season. But Manuel Pellegrinis team failed to test Sunderland goalkeeper Vito Mannone enough and the home side could easily have sprung a shock had they done better with three clear-cut chances before half-time.The second half was almost completely dominated by Sunderland, but they were unable to breach Citys defences as the visitors preserved the three-point gap that separates them from leaders Leicester City, their next opponents.A day that began with newspaper headlines trumpeting Guardiolas arrival from Bayern Munich at the end of the season ended with Pellegrini celebrating victory in his 100th Premier League game at the City helm. With City having reached the League Cup final and made progress in the FA Cup in recent weeks, Pellegrini had called on his players before the game to step up their challenge for the league title. He backed that call up by fielding his strongest side available and that meant returns for Joe Hart, Martin Demichelis, Yaya Toure, David Silva and Aguero, who started alongside FA Cup hat-trick star Kelechi Iheanacho.Sunderland handed full debuts to January defensive reinforcements Jan Kirchhoff and Lamine Kone, both of whom impressed, as manager Sam Allardyce prepared for a night when his side would have expected to be under the cosh despite home advantage.Sunderland made a solid start, but were undone by a piece of Aguero brilliance. The Argentine started and finished a move that culminated in him taking a right-wing cross from Jesus Navas, wrong-footing right-back Billy Jones and deftly lifting the ball home across Mannone from 10 yards.City threatened occasionally, but it was Sunderland who stepped up thereafter and both debutants might have got on the scoresheet.First Kone headed wide from Jeremain Lenss free-kick in the 34th minute with the goal at his mercy before, six minutes later, Kirchhoff slid in to direct a good chance wide at the near post from a left-wing cross.Seconds before half-time, Sunderland looked certain to score only for Hart to deny Jermain Defoe from point-blank range with a world-class save. Joness follow-up from a couple of yards out smashed off the post.Suitably encouraged, Sunderland stormed out of the blocks in the second half.Allardyce brought on another debutant, attacking midfielder Wahbi Khazri, while Pellegrini swapped Iheanacho for holding midfielder Fernando.City had to weather solid pressure, but for all their domination Sunderland were unable to properly test Hart again until the 77th minute when a Jones pile-driver was palmed wide by the England shot-stopper.From the resulting corner, either Khazri or Sunderland skipper John OShea might have scored, but Harts goal survived. There were a couple more scares, but City held firm to maintain their chances of handing Guardiola a league crown to protect when he sweeps in from Bavaria.

Football: Vardy wonder-strike fires Leicester title bid

Posted:

LEICESTER (AFP) - A wonder-goal from England striker Jamie Vardy helped prolong Leicester Citys remarkable Premier League title challenge as they defeated Liverpool 2-0 at the King Power Stadium on Tuesday.Vardy scored both of the Foxes goals, taking his tally to 18, and the first was a stunning strike from the right-hand corner of the penalty area that capped another astonishing night for his team. That goal, on the hour-mark, was followed by a close-range goal 11 minutes later that gave Leicester a deserved win and maintained their three-point lead at the top of the table.Leicester might have claimed the lead inside the opening minute when Liverpool handed possession to the hosts and Riyad Mahrez picked up the ball.He progressed to the edge of the penalty area with minimal resistance before bending a shot narrowly off target. They went even closer in the ninth minute when Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson was robbed in midfield by Shinji Okazaki and referee Andre Marriner allowed play to continue despite appeals for a free-kick.The Japan international fed Vardy and raced to the far post to meet his team-mates cross, but his header was pushed over the bar brilliantly by Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet.Leicester goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel made an equally fine save moments later from a shot by Emre Can, but an offside flag had been raised against the Liverpool midfielder.A fine touch from Mahrez from Christian Fuchss dipping pass then gave the Algerian another shooting opportunity, but Mignolet was equal to his 20-yard effort.Liverpool attempted to catch Leicester out with a short corner in the 18th minute, but after working the ball to Lucas Leiva, they saw his cross fly horribly into the stand behind Schmeichels goal.Leicester continued to hold sway with Vardy to the fore and his persistence won a corner from which they could have tested Mignolet.Fuchss delivery found Robert Huth, but the defender headed over. The Liverpool keeper was required again 10 minutes from half-time when his side failed to deal with a thrown-in and the ball broke to Mahrez. The winger hit a curling, left-foot shot that was heading for the roof of the net until Mignolet tipped it over.A rare Liverpool attack caused some worries for Leicester six minutes before the interval when Roberto Firmino spread play to Alberto Moreno on the left, but the full-back blazed a shot wide with colleagues waiting for a cross.Early in the second half Can should have put Liverpool ahead after combining well with James Milner before collecting a cross by Henderson, but his shot was deflected wide.Leicester, though, continued to press and Okazaki fired just over after seizing on a poor clearance by Mamadou Sakho. Then Lucas decided to try his luck from 25 yards, but he blazed his effort over the crossbar.Moments later Morenos cross-shot almost caught out Schmeichel at his near post but the Dane clawed the ball away to safety. Then, in the 60th minute, Vardy raised the roof at the King Power Stadium with a moment of brilliance. He collected a clever, lofted pass from Mahrez and sent a powerful, dipping shot from the apex over the area over a stranded Mignolet. And he doubled his sides lead 11 minutes later with a poachers goal as he prodded a shot past Mignolet after a shot from Okazaki deflected into his path.Liverpool pushed for a lifeline, but Leicester managed the closing stages of the game well to maintain their superb season.

Football: Kane double destroys Norwich

Posted:

NORWICH (AFP) - Tottenham kept their Premier League title challenge on track as Harry Kanes double inspired a 3-0 win over struggling Norwich on Tuesday.Mauricio Pochettinos side are only five points behind leaders Leicester after climbing above bitter rivals Arsenal into third place thanks to a dominant display at Carrow Road.Dele Alli opened the scoring early on and Kane added a first half penalty before wrapping up the points in the final moments.Tottenhams third successive league win and fifth victory in a row in all competitions added to the growing feeling that Pochettinos vibrant young team are capable of securing not only a top four finish but possibly the clubs first English title since 1961.The predatory finishing of Kane and the creative class of his England team-mate Alli have combined to drive Tottenhams unexpected title bid and they were the key figures once again. In contrast to upwardly mobile Tottenham, Norwich have now lost their last five matches in all competitions and are languishing just two points above the relegation zone.Norwich manager Alex Neil signed nine players during the January transfer window, more than any other Premier League club, as he tried to revitalise a squad which has struggled on their return to the top-flight.Switzerland international Timm Klose, one of Neils new recruits, made his debut in defence, but Norwich had conceded 14 goals in their previous four games and it took Tottenham just 96 seconds to exploit the hosts fragile rearguard. The goal came after Christian Eriksens corner was only half cleared to Toby Alderweireld on the edge of the penalty area.Alderweirelds shot was blocked, but Eriksen pounced on the rebound and drilled a low strike that Norwich goalkeeper Declan Rudd could only parry towards Alli, who gleefully tapped in from close-range.The 19-year-olds seventh club goal of his impressive breakthrough season might have been a more mundane affair than his last -- a sublime contender among the best of the season to date against Crystal Palace in January.Regardless of the quality, the significance was clear to see as Tottenham, confidence soaring, threatened to blow Norwich away before half-time.South Korea forward Son Heung-min forced Rudd into a good save when he produced a deft flicked effort from Kanes cross.Pochettinos men were in complete control and they doubled their lead in the 30th minute when referee Kevin Friend awarded a penalty after Alli was brought down by Norwich defender Sebastien Bassong.Kane had scored a penalty in Tottenhams 3-0 win over the Canaries on Boxing Day and the England forward was nerveless from the spot again as he stroked home his 17th club goal of the season. It took a decent stop from Rudd to deny Kane his second goal and moments later Alli headed wide when he should really have scored from Danny Roses cross.Alli came off at half-time, reportedly with an illness, and his absence robbed Tottenham of their driving force, with Norwich looking reinvigorated as a result.Steven Naismith headed narrowly wide for the hosts before Bassong saw his close-range finish ruled out for offside. But Norwichs pressure soon fizzled out and Kane capped the Spurs stroll when he slotted home in the 90th minute.

Football: Neymar hit with fraud proceedings in Brazil

Posted:

SAO PAULO (AFP) - Barcelona and Brazils star striker Neymar suffered a fresh legal blow Tuesday when Brazilian prosecutors filed a tax fraud and forgery case against him.The 23-year-old and his family have denied any wrongdoing over alleged irregularities in his superstar signing for Barcelona in 2013.But hours after he gave testimony in Spain in one case, a new front opened up as federal prosecutors in Brazil launched proceedings against him and his father.Investigators in both countries suspect Neymars family and the club hid the real value of the deal under which Barcelona signed him from Brazilian side Santos.Barcelona valued the transfer at about 57 million euros ($62 million), but Spanish authorities think it added up to more than 83 million euros.Brazils federal prosecution service accused the player, full name Neymar da Silva Santos Junior, and his father of forging contracts to pay less tax.It made the same accusations against his father and two senior FC Barcelona management figures: the clubs current president Josep Maria Bartomeu and his predecessor Sandro Rosell.A federal court must now decide whether to admit the charges and put them on trial. Last September, Brazilian authorities froze $47 million worth of the players assets pending investigations. The federal prosecution service said in a statement the charges related to tax evasion and forgery, which cost the state millions in lost taxes.Wearing jeans and sunglasses, Neymar seemed relaxed as he arrived at Spains National Court in Madrid with his father Neymar da Silva Santos, who was also called to testify before an investigating judge. The player signed an autograph in front of a group of photographers before giving the thumbs-up and entering court, where he stayed an hour and a half.He made no comment when he left, but took a multitude of selfies with young supporters.Neymar and his father have defended themselves in the media. Before saying nonsense -- that we hid this, or hid that -- they should prove it, Neymar told Brazilian TV station Globo on Sunday. My father is doing everything to ensure that I can just focus on playing football. He handles the books. But in the moment when you see someone you love suffering, it starts to hurt.Bartomeu and Rosell refused to testify when called this week, insisting on the account they had given for a previous hearing.A representative of Santos told the judge on Monday the club had felt cheated by Neymar and his father after details of the transfer emerged.Fatima Cristina Bonassa said during a five-hour testimony that the footballer was an adult at the time of transfer and knew what he was signing. The transfer helped Barcelona form one of the worlds most lethal football strike forces, along with Argentine superstar Lionel Messi and Uruguays Luis Suarez. But the club has faced numerous legal headaches off the field. Messi himself has been called to stand trial from May 31 for tax fraud in a separate case.Neymars case hasnt affected his performances on the field. He helped Barca to a treble title triumph last season.Brazils golden boy is now expected to captain his country on home soil at the Rio Olympics in August.Neymar is perfect, said Barcelona coach Luis Enrique, commenting on the scandal. From zero to one million, it affects him at 0.000001 percent, Enrique said.It has nothing to do with football, this is an issue that will be resolved as it should be.

MILAN (AFP) - Italian luxury sports carmaker Ferrari on Tuesday announced an increase in its net profit for last year, but investors dumped its shares after being spooked by its debt and disappointed with the 2016 outlook.Net profit rose at the brand with the famous prancing horse logo by 9.4 percent last year to 290 million euros. The debt of 1.94 billion euros, the result of its spinoff from Fiat Chrysler last year and entry onto the Milan stock exchange, was considerably higher than the 1.7 billion expected by analysts. Moreover, Ferrari expects the debt to rise slightly this year, while the increase in sales to shift down a gear. While sales rose by 6 percent in 2015 to 7,664 vehicles, the company only expects a 3.1 percent gain this year to 7,900 cars.Adjusted operating profit should also climb by 3 percent to 770 million euros, but revenues are only expected to rise by half that rate to 2.9 billion. The modest outlook combined with the high debt level disappointed investors, with Ferrari shares finishing the day down 9.6 percent at 33 euros on the Milan market. In New York they closed down 12.4 percent down at $34.98.

Oil extends deep losses, WTI falls below $30

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - Oil prices extended sharp losses for a second day Tuesday as traders anticipate another rise in US crude stockpiles, worsening the global glut.US benchmark West Texas Intermediate for delivery in March slid $1.74 (5.5 percent) to $29.88 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. It was the first time WTI closed below $30 since January 21.In London, Brent North Sea crude for April fell to $32.72 a barrel, down $1.52 (4.4 percent) from Mondays settlement.Indications are pointing to a fairly chunky build tomorrow, said Matt Smith of Clipper Data, referring to the Department of Energys weekly petroleum report scheduled on Wednesday. While traders expected more bearish news on US crude inventories, the prospects of some sort of coordinated action between Russia and the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries to cut output faded.Last week, several OPEC and Russian officials hinted at the possibility of coordinated production cuts, which assisted in lifting crude prices above $34 a barrel, said Robbie Fraser of Schneider Electric. However, this weeks trading has seen crude futures move decidedly lower, as there is growing realization that a Russia/OPEC effort to lift prices still faces significant obstacles.Russia announced Tuesday that it pumped a post-Soviet record amount of crude oil and condensate in January of about 18.9 million barrels a day, as it fights to hold onto market share.Adding pressure on the market was the dim outlook for global oil demand.Weak economic data from China and the US have put pressure on prices. Consequently, the manufacturing sector in the two most important oil-consumer countries is in a recession, which is stirring up fears about future oil demand, Commerzbank said in a client note.
