Israeli air strike kills child in Gaza: Palestinian official

Posted:

GAZA CITY (AFP) - Israeli planes struck Hamas bases in the Gaza Strip early Saturday, killing a child living near one of the targets and injuring his sister, Gaza health ministry spokesman Ashraf al-Qudra said.Yasin Abu Khussa, 10, died in a raid on a base of the groups military wing, the Ezzedine al-Qassem Brigades, at Beit Lahiya in the north of the strip, he said -- one of four strikes the Israeli military said it carried out in response to rocket fire into Israel. His sister Yasmin, 6, was seriously wounded and his brother Ayub, 13, suffered moderate injuries, al-Qudra told AFP.The strikes came hours after four rockets fired from the Gaza Strip by Palestinian militants hit neighbouring Israel Friday night without apparent casualties, the Israeli army said. In response to the aggression, the Israel Air Force targeted four Hamas sites in the northern Gaza Strip, a military statement said. There have been seven rockets fired at Israel from the Gaza Strip since the beginning of the year.Since the end of the devastating war between Israel and Gaza militants in summer 2014, approximately 34 projectiles fired from the Hamas-controlled Palestinian coastal strip have hit the Jewish state, according to military data.Sunni Muslim militants claiming links to the Islamic State jihadist group have said they were behind rocket fire in recent months, but Israel holds Hamas responsible for all such incidents.

Israel raids Palestinian TV station accused over unrest

Posted:

RAMALLAH (AFP) - Israeli forces on Friday raided the Ramallah offices of a Palestinian television station accused of inciting violence, the security services said, after the government approved new measures to combat unrest. The Shin Bet security agency said in a statement that the station, Palestine Today, backed the Islamic Jihad militant group and had been helping to fuel a five-month wave of violence. The channel served the Islamic Jihad as a central means to incite the West Bank population, calling for terror attacks against Israel and its citizens. Incitement was broadcast on the television station as well as the Internet, it said.Since October 1, a wave of violence has killed 188 Palestinians, 28 Israelis, two Americans, an Eritrean and a Sudanese, according to an AFP count. Most of the Palestinians were killed while carrying out knife, gun or car-ramming attacks. On Friday a Palestinian stabbed an ultra-Orthodox Jewish man in Jerusalems Old City, leaving him moderately wounded. The assailant, 18 years old and from the West Bank, was arrested after a brief search of the area, police said.In the West Bank village of Beitunia, near Ramallah, Palestinians hurled rocks and at least one petrol bomb at armoured army patrol vehicles and troops fired tear gas and rubber bullets in response. In the pre-dawn raid on Palestine Today, conducted jointly by Shin Bet, Israeli police and the army, security forces arrested office manager, Farooq Aliat, 34, of Bir Zeit, north of Ramallah, an Islamic Jihad operative who had been imprisoned in Israel for his activities, the agencys statement said.Cameraman Mohammed Amr and technician Shabib Shabib were briefly detained then released, the Palestinian Journalists Union said.An Israeli army order in Arabic declaring the premises closed indefinitely was posted on the door.TV production company Trans Media, in the same building, was also raided and equipment taken away, AFP journalists at the scene said.It provides facilities for several foreign and local stations, including Palestine Today. The channel, which is based in the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip, said it continued to broadcast to the Israeli-occupied West Bank via its Lebanese transmitters.Islamic Jihad denounced the Israeli aggression against the nationalist media of the resistance, calling the raid another episode in the long saga of oppression by the occupation.Senior Palestine Liberation Organisation official Hanan Ashrawi condemned the Israeli operation, saying it showed the will of the extremist Israeli government to silence every Palestinian voice.Israel blames incitement by Palestinian leaders and media as a main cause of the current violence.Since October Palestinian Today has been showing a Jerusalem Intifada logo on screen during its reports on the violence. In November, Israel shut down two radio stations in the flashpoint West Bank city of Hebron -- Al-Hurria and Al-Khalil -- accusing them of fanning the violence. On Tuesday Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu decided on new measures, including a crackdown on Palestinian broadcasters and completion of the unfinished security barrier between Jerusalem and the West Bank.He also ordered the cancellation of Israeli work permits for relatives of Palestinian attackers and fast-track demolition of perpetrators homes.Israel has increased its efforts against unauthorised Palestinian labourers, arresting more than 400 workers and dozens of their Israeli employers over the past two days, police said.

As Syria talks near, Kerry works with Saudi allies

KING KHALID MILITARY CITY (AFP) - Secretary of State John Kerry met Saudi Arabias King Salman and his most senior ministers Friday as Washington and its Arab allies prepared new Syrian peace talks. The United Nations hopes to host indirect talks between Bashar al-Assads regime and rebel leaders in Geneva on Monday, to reinforce a tentative ceasefire on the ground. The United States and Saudi Arabia are two of the chief sponsors of the opposition side in the almost five-year-old civil war, and will be key to getting them to the table.I think we need to talk about Syria, Kerry said, as he sat down with Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Nayef and senior Saudi officials after his reception with King Salman.Top Saudi officials, including Defence Minister Mohammad Bin Salman al-Saud and Foreign Minister Adel Al-Jubeir, had gathered at a military base after a major exercise.Reporters were ushered out as talks got underway, but US officials had said they would focus on Syria and the Yemen, where Saudi forces are bombing Shiite rebels.Kerry was also due to meet his Emirati counterpart Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Zayed al-Nahyan at the King Khalid Military City base before flying to Paris on Saturday. There he was to meet his French, British, German and Italian opposite numbers, as the Western allies try to coordinate their efforts to push for and end to the war.Earlier Friday, UN peace envoy Staffan de Mistura had called for Syrians to hold elections within 18 months. But in a worrying development ahead of the negotiations, government raids reportedly killed five civilians in Syrias second city, Aleppo, despite a ceasefire. The truce has prompted a nearly two-week lull in fighting between the Russian-backed regime and non-jihadist rebels since coming into force on February 27.

US asks UN Security Council to meet on Iran missile tests Monday

Posted:

UNITED NATIONS (AFP) - The United States has asked the UN Security Council to discuss Irans recent ballistic missile launches during a meeting on Monday, the US ambassador said. The United States is deeply concerned about the missile tests which are provocative and destabilizing, Samantha Power said in a statement on Friday.Iran fired two long-range ballistic missiles on Wednesday and similar tests were carried out on Tuesday, less than two months after the Iran nuclear deal was implemented.Power said Iranian military leaders had claimed that the missiles were designed to be a direct threat to Israel and added: We condemn such threats against another UN member-state and one of our closest allies.Under the nuclear deal with Iran that came into force January 16, most sanctions resolutions against Tehran were annulled. But an arms embargo and restrictions on ballistic missile technology capable of carrying a nuclear warhead remain in place, under Resolution 2231.Iran has maintained that its missile program is not aimed at developing a nuclear capability. We will raise these dangerous launches directly at council consultations, which we have called for, on Monday, said Power. These launches underscore the need to work with partners around the world to slow and degrade Irans missile program, she added. On Wednesday, Iran fired two Qadr-H and Qadr-F precision missiles fired from launcher trucks tucked in a mountain range in northern Iran, hitting targets about 1,400 kilometers (870 miles) away in the southeastern Makran area, Irans Revolutionary Guards said.A day earlier, state media announced that short-, medium- and long-range precision guided missiles were fired from several sites to show the countrys all-out readiness to confront threats.

India nuclear reactor shut down after water leak

Posted:

AHMEDABAD (AFP) - A reactor at a nuclear plant in western India was shut down Friday after a water leak was discovered, officials said, stressing that workers had not been exposed to radiation. No radioactive material had leaked from the Kakrapar Atomic Power Station in the coastal state of Gujarat, the director of the site said.Consequent to a small leak in the primary heat transport system, the reactor was shut down as intended as per design provisions, L. K. Jain said in a statement. All safety systems are working as intended. The radioactivity/radiation levels in the plant premises and outside are normal. The unit was shut down at about 9:00 am (0330 GMT) and would restart only after officials from Indias Atomic Energy Regulatory Board inspect the plant and give it the go-ahead.The plants two reactors produce 440 megawatts of power, while two more are being built. In 2011, four labourers at the plant were exposed to radiation when they were painting a tunnel. Indias 20 nuclear plants currently account for less than two percent of its power capacity.Although the government wants to boost this to 25 percent by 2050, concerns over radiation leaks and the effect on residents living near proposed sites have led to protests and stalling of major projects. In 2014, six workers suffered nearly 50 percent burns at a Russian-backed plant in southern Tamil Nadu state.

Tennis: Confident Djokovic shoots for another desert title

Posted:

INDIAN WELLS (AFP) - Novak Djokovics opponents have learned over the years that it is never wise to bet against him and it will be no different as he begins his quest for a third consecutive Indian Wells title.Djokovic is also aiming for his fifth overall at this weeks ATP and WTA Tour tournament, one of the biggest events on the tennis calendar outside of the four Grand Slams. My approach is not that I have to win this, or I am supposed to win this, but I am going to win this, Djokovic said Friday. Then I am able to believe in myself and that confidence has brought me to where I am today. He is the heavy favourite to take another title at Indian Wells and hopes to use that as a stepping stone towards his first French Open crown which would complete the career Grand Slam. If Djokovic defends his title in California it would make him the most successful player in the history of the hardcourt tournament.I like the speed of the courts here, he said. I feel comfortable. The ball bounces high and I grew up on clay so I am use to high bounces.Djokovic also enters Indian Wells with a 16-1 record this year. His only loss was to Feliciano Lopez in the quarter-finals of the Dubai Tennis Championships. He has dropped just four out of 39 total sets. The 28-year-old Serb opened the season by winning the Doha title and then followed by capturing his 11th career Grand Slam crown and a record-tying sixth Australian Open.In his last tournament in Dubai, he was forced to retire in the quarter-finals because of an eye infection. It snapped a streak of 17 straight finals going back to last years Aussie Open.It was a couple of not easy weeks for me health-wise, Djokovic said. It is the first time in my life I have had some kind of issue with my eye.Djokovic has won 11 straight matches in Indian Wells since his latest loss to del Potro in the semi-finals three years ago.Djokovic and Roger Federer own the tournament record with four titles each. Federer is not here but the unseeded del Potro is after having missed the last two tournaments with injury. The draw sets up a possible semi-final clash between Djokovic and Spaniard Rafael Nadal. Theyre almost even in their 47 career meetings, with the Djokovic owning a 24-23 advantage. All in all I feel good, he said. I have already adjusted to the time zone of the west coast. I am getting back to normal. Hopefully I will be able to play my best from the beginning. The Grand Slams are the biggest but Indian Wells is right behind it.

INDIAN WELLS (AFP) - Maria Sharapova hit back Friday at suggestions she received five separate warnings about changes to tennis anti-doping rules which ultimately led to her testing positive for a banned drug.A defiant Sharapova defended herself in a post on her Facebook page, saying that she received one clear notice in December titled Main Changes to the Tennis Anti-Doping Programme for 2016.I should have paid more attention to it. But the other communications? They were buried in newsletters, websites, or handouts, the Russian star said.Former world number one Sharapova announced Monday that she failed a drug test at the Australian Open in January.Sharapova tested positive for meldonium, which was added to the World Anti-Doping Agencys banned list on January 1.Sharapova also said she wants to set the record straight because there is a lot of misinformation going around about her situation.I am determined to fight back, she said. No excuses, but its wrong to say I was warned five times.

Tennis: Bouchard's comeback gathers steam

Posted:

INDIAN WELLS (AFP) - Eugenie Bouchard took another step in her comeback by rallying for a 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory over qualifier Risa Ozaki in the opening round at Indian Wells. The 22-year-old Canadian, who had a breakout year in 2014 when she reached world No. 5, is fresh off a run to the final of the Malaysian Open on Sunday where she lost to Elina Svitolina 6-7 (5/7), 6-4, 7-5. This was the first career meeting between Bouchard and Ozaki, who won two qualifying matches to get into the main draw. Ozaki proved to be a difficult opponent mixing up her shots and making very few mistakes in the early stages of the match.I felt out of sorts, said Bouchard, adding she was fatigued from her hectic travel schedule. I felt more emotional than usual. It was one of those days where I felt weird and off on the court.I just told myself I love playing tennis I got to keep trying. If I lose I want to go down the right way, playing my game. At least it went the right way.Bouchard made the quarter-finals of the Australian Open last year but then saw her game go sideways. Heading into Indian Wells this year she was ranked 42nd in the world. She suffered a concussion at the 2015 US Open after she slipped in the locker room and hit her head, causing her to withdraw from the Grand Slam event. She is involved in a legal battle with the United States Tennis Association. But Bouchard is now on the road to putting 2015 behind her and getting her game back in order. The unseeded Montreal-born Bouchard needed almost two hours to win Thursday evenings match which ended when Ozakis backhand sailed long.Bouchard finished with six aces, two double faults and won 52 percent of her second-serve points. The opening three games of the match went quickly as neither player dropped a point on serve.Down 2-1 in the fourth game, Bouchard became the first to lose a service point, hitting a shot long to make it 40-15. Despite jumping out to a 40-0 lead she would go on to lose the game which allowed Ozaki to make it 3-1.Bouchard had a chance to break back in the seventh game but she sailed an easy forehand long and Ozaki used those unforced errors by the Canadian to go up 5-2.Ozaki broke Bouchard for the second time to win the set 6-2.Bouchard won the first two games of the middle set before Ozaki levelled it by taking the next two. Bouchard then broke Ozaki three times to go ahead 5-4 before serving out for the set.Bouchard carried that momentum over into the final set as she built a 5-1 lead. Ozaki won the seventh game of the set before Bouchard clinched the victory by winning it on her first match point. She played better than I expected. I am looking forward to my next match, Bouchard said of her second round encounter with American 21st seed Sloane Stephens. The top 32 seeds received a bye into the second round at Indian Wells. This is the first time since the Australian Open, that all the WTA and ATP Tours top players are in the same place. In the mens draw, unseeded Juan Martin del Potro marked his return to the desert tournament with a dominating 6-4, 6-0 victory over Tim Smyczek.

Football: Palace pounce late to reach FA Cup semi-finals

Posted:

READING (AFP) - Crystal Palace reached the FA Cup semi-finals for the first time in 21 years as Yohan Cabayes controversial penalty inspired a 2-0 win at second tier Reading on Friday.Alan Pardews Premier League strugglers looked as though they would have to settle for a replay with just minutes left in the quarter-final at the Madejski Stadium. But Yannick Bolasie won a debatable 86th minute penalty after tumbling following the slightest contact with Reading defender Jake Cooper, who was sent off for the foul.France midfielder Yohan Cabaye stepped up to convert the spot-kick and Fraizer Campbell added Palaces second goal with virtually the last kick. The Eagles late flourish takes them into the last four for the first time since 1995 when they were beaten by Manchester United in a replay. They last made the final in 1990 when Pardew, then a journeyman Palace midfielder, was the goal-scoring hero in a famous semi-final upset of Liverpool.Palaces progress to the semi-finals at Wembley is at odds with their terrible league form and they arrived at Reading on a 12-match winless run that had seen them slide towards the relegation zone.It was a much-needed boost for Pardew, who cut his managerial teeth at Reading before walking out in 2003 to take charge of West Ham.He received a frosty reception from Royals fans on his latest return, but eventually had the last laugh.I havent seen the penalty again and Im not going to even give it an opinion. Ive had enough trouble with penalties Pardew said in reference to Liverpools dubious penalty winner against Palace last weekend. It was a tricky tie for us but we were really good and should have wrapped it up before the penalty.Weve been terrific in the cup but edgy and nervous in the league. Hopefully we can take this into league.Chances were at a premium and it took over 20 minutes for Reading, 14th in the second tier, to threaten for the first time when Michael Hectors header was comfortably saved by Wayne Hennessey.Palace gradually began to exert a measure of control and Cabayes free-kick drew a fine save from Ali Al Habsi.Emmanuel Adebayor should have put Pardews men ahead when the Togo forward held off Paul McShane for a strike that was too close to Al Habsi.Reading forward Ola John fared no better than Adebayor when a golden opportunity fell his way just before half-time, with his hesitancy allowing the Palace keeper to save after he misjudged a cross.Palace pressed hard for the opener at the start of the second half and Mile Jedinaks goalbound header was brilliantly clawed away by Al Habsi, while moments later another Jedinak effort was cleared off the line.Al Habsi remained the games pivotal figure and he flung himself to his left to keep out Cabayes free-kick.Palace were nearly undone at the back by a routine cross that reached John at the far post, yet the forwards diving header was straight at Hennessey. The visitors pressure was finally rewarded in the 86th minute when Cooper needlessly tugged at Bolasies shirt as a harmless ball bounced towards Al Habsi.Bolasie made the most of the slight contact, throwing himself to the turf to earn a penalty and a red card for Cooper.Cabaye took the spot-kick and smashed it down the middle, with Al Habsi unable to keep it out despite getting a hand to the ball. There was still time for Campbell to rub salt into Readings wounds deep into the stoppage-time when he scored from on the goal-line after initially hitting a post.

Football: Benitez appointed Newcastle United manager

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Rafael Benitez returned to English football on Friday with the task of saving Newcastle United from Premier League relegation after the struggling north-east side announced the Spaniard as their new manager.Former Liverpool boss Benitez, sacked by Real Madrid earlier this season, has signed a three-year deal with Newcastle, who are currently second-bottom in the table with just 10 league games remaining this term. His appointment was announced just hours after Newcastle confirmed that they had sacked former manager Steve McClaren.I have the pleasure to confirm I have committed to a legendary English club, with the massive challenge of remaining part of the Premier League, said Benitez in a Newcastle statement.Benitez was Liverpools manager from 2004-2010 and also had a brief stint as Chelsea caretaker boss during the 2012/13 season. He tried to rally Newcastles increasingly frustrated supporters by saying: All of us must push together in the same direction and with the same target in mind. This is the reason why Im going to ask for your total support to successfully complete this task. The 55-year-old added: Personally, it means my return to the Premier League, closer to my home and my family. I cant be happier.Cmon Toon Army The club and I need your total involvementNewcastle managing director Lee Charnley hailed Benitezs appointment, saying: In Rafa we have, without doubt, secured the services of one of Europes top managers. Our sole focus now is to give our full support to Rafa, his coaching team and the players in order to secure our status in the Premier League.Earlier, Charnley found himself apologising for the uncertainty surrounding the 54-year-old McClarens position after Saturdays 3-1 home defeat by Bournemouth. That result was widely regarded as making any extension of the former England managers nine-month Newcastle reign impossible, with the Magpies having won just six of their 28 league games so far this season, and on Friday the club said McClaren had been sacked with immediate effect.McClaren, in a statement issued later Friday through the League Managers Association, said he understood why he had been sacked but insisted he could have turned the tide of poor results.I am obviously very disappointed with the decision, he said. I appreciate any frustrations relating to the teams results and the club subsequently finding itself in a battle to avoid relegation. I remain confident, however, that we would have stayed in the Premier League with a view to building for next season.I would like to place on record what a privilege it has been to manage Newcastle United Football Club. It is a great a club -- the embodiment of the city, with incredible supporters.Magpies fans have long been unhappy with the way Newcastles millionaire owner Mike Ashley, the man behind Britains Sports Direct chain, has run the club .The teams troubles have been reflected in a merry-go-round at St James that has seen 10 managers in the 12 years since Bobby Robson, another ex-England boss, left in 2004.For all their passionate support and big club status, Newcastle have not won a major trophy since the 1969 European Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, a forerunner of the Europa League. They spent 29 million pound ($41 million, 37 million euros) on new players during the January transfer window in a bid to avoid the drop but only Aston Villa are below them in the table, although the Magpies are just a point away from safety. Benitez, who guided Liverpool to Champions League glory in 2005, will have just days to get to know his new players before a formidably tough first match away to Premier League leaders Leicester on Monday. His first home game in charge will be against local rivals Sunderland on March 20, one of the most significant Tyne-Wear derbies in years given the Black Cats are also battling to avoid relegation.

Badminton: Lin Dan's revenge takes him into All-England semi-finals

Posted:

BIRMINGHAM (AFP) - Olympic champion Lin Dan scored a notable revenge over Jan Jorgensen, the third-seeded Dane, to reach the semi-finals of the All-England Open championships with an ominously brilliant 10-21, 21-9, 21-15 win. After turning the match round Lin got completely on top before Jorgensen injected a little late respectability into the score-line.Lins subtle manoeuvrings and softly masked disguises - the product of clever tactical insights - as well as the margin of the success offered an indication of how much Lins preparations for the Olympics in Rio in August may already have raised his standard. It was was atonement for a loss to Jorgensen in the world championships quarter-finals in Jakarta seven months ago, when Lin was well beaten in straight games. This time, after just a few points of the second game, there was little doubt that he would prevail.I took time to analyse Jorgensens game after that defeat, Lin said. I tried to find better ways of beating him. I really like the way he plays - its aggressive and he can apply a lot of pressure - but this was a good experience for me after the first game.It also suggested that even at the age of 32 and despite very few tournament titles in the past three years, Lin may well be good enough to challenge for a third Olympic gold.Im no longer young, but I still enjoy the competition, and the feeling of that, he said. Im really excited with the win.He is surely now the unofficial favourite for his sixth All-England title. Both Chen Long, the titleholder, and Lee Chong Wei, the former world number one, have both been beaten. He next plays Chens conqueror, Xue Song, who played another fine match to cause an upset for the second successive day, overcoming Danish sixth seed Viktor Axelsen 21-19, 21-23, 21-11. Though ranked as low as 30 Xue has here been playing to a top ten standard, applying steady pressure, keeping a cool head, and attributing his good mental state to watching American horror movies.Im really happy to play my teammate, said Lin. It will be a different feeling altogether.Another notable exit was that of the second-seeded Saina Nehwal, the former world number one and last years runner-up in the womens singles. She looked below her best during a 21-15, 21-6 loss to Tai Tzu Ying, the former Super Series finals winner, but this was not entirely surprising.Nehwal had lost six of her seven previous matches against the Taiwanese player, and is only just finding her way back after a lengthy injury break. There are a lot of tournaments to come in which I can play well and its still a long time before the Olympics, Nehwal said.I dont really think this is a surprise, said Tai. Ive done well against her before. She has a semi-final against Wang Shixian, the former All-England champion from China, who beat compatriot Li Xuerui, the Olympic champion, 16-21, 21-18, 21-17 with a surge which won he the last four points.Unlike Nehwal, the top-seeded Carolina Marin overcame a jinx opponent, ending a sequence of four losses in four matches against Ratchanok Intanon. The top-seeded titleholder from Spain beat the former world champion from Thailand 21-27, 21-19, finding ways to prevent her talented opponent from imposing sudden ambushes and changes of direction on the rallies.I think this is my best match so far - I spent a lot of time preparing for it, said Marin. Im very happy with my performance and I really want to win this title.

Obama woos tech community amid Apple battle

AUSTIN (AFP) - President Barack Obama on Friday addressed SXSW -- the technology worlds Davos and Woodstock rolled into one -- making a recruitment pitch to Americas whizkids, even as the government is embroiled in a high-profile battle with Apple.Obama traveled to Austin, Texas, to urge programers and other tech entrepeneurs to enlist and help make government services better. We need you, said Obama. But an otherwise warm welcome from the young and liberal crowd of 2,100 was marked by skepticism about his governments clashes with tech firms over security.Obamas administration has gone to court to try and force Apple to unlock the iPhone of one of the San Bernardino terror attackers. But that has prompted a wider debate within both the government and the tech community over privacy and whether government should have back door access to encrypted content.Obama told the crowd it was not new to accept some curbs on privacy in exchange for personal security.
