INDIAN WELLS (AFP) - World No. 2 Andy Murray was upset in the third round at Indian Wells on Monday, losing in three sets 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (7/3) to Federico Delbonis.Delbonis advances to the fourth round of the ATP Tour hardcourt event where he will face either Gael Monfils of France or Spains Albert Ramos-Vinolas.In other matches, Milos Raonic, who already has one ATP title in 2016, advanced into the fourth round when Australian Bernard Tomic retired with a wrist injury.Raonic is trying to improve on his best performance in Indian Wells when he reached the semi-finals last year where he lost to Swiss star Roger Federer. The 25-year-old Canadian was up 3-0 in the second set in the third round tie, after cruising through the first at 6-2, when Tomic called it quits.World No. 14 Raonic blasted nine aces and won 91 percent of his first serve points in 36 minutes on the court. It took him just 25 minutes to win the first set.His quarter-final win over 14-time Grand Slam winner Rafael Nadal last year at Indian Wells was voted one of the best matches of 2015.Raonic claimed his eighth career singles title by winning in Brisbane earlier this year.In womens action Monday, Czech Karolina Plishkova subdued former world No. 1 Ana Ivanovic 6-2, 6-0.Ivanovic was making her 11th appearance in Indian Wells, winning the title in 2008.In other early matches, Slovakias Magdalena Rybarikova beat seventh seeded Belinda Bencic 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, and Johanna Konta defeated Denisa Allertova 6-4, 6-1.

Tennis: Nadal plans to sue France's ex-sports minister

INDIAN WELLS (AFP) - Rafael Nadal stepped up his attack Sunday on those who label him a drugs cheat, threatening to sue the French ex-sports minister who said the Spanish tennis star failed a drug test.Nadal said he is seeking justice and will have his day in court to silence critics like former French minister Roselyne Bachelot.I gonna sue her, and I gonna sue everyone who gonna comment something similar in the future, because I am tired of that, Nadal said Sunday night at the Indian Wells hardcourt tournament.Bachelot, who served as sports minister between 2007 and 2010, has said that Nadal faked an injury in 2012, when he missed the final six months of the season due to knee problems, in order to hide a positive drug test. The 14-time Grand Slam champion first told AFP on Saturday night that he was going to seek justice and use the courts to put a stop to speculation he ever used performance-enhancing drugs. I am tired about these things. I let it go a few times in the past. No more, Nadal said, adding that he expected better of person who was minister of a big country and a great country like France.Nadal has never failed a drug test in his many years on the ATP Tour and has always vehemently denied ever using a banned substance.Nadal said he had been reluctant to take people who accused him of using illegal drugs to court in the past, but has now changed his mind.Nadal, the world number five, beat Gilles Muller 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 in the second round at Indian Wells on Sunday.Nadal, the former three-time Indian Wells champion, moves on to face fellow Spaniard Fernando Verdasco in the hardcourt tournament, one of the biggest events on the ATP Tour calendar outside of the four Grand Slams. The draw sets up a possible semi-final showdown between world number one Novak Djokovic and Nadal. Theyre nearly even in their 47 head-to-head meetings, with Djokovic owning a 24-23 edge.

Football: Okazaki upstages Benitez as Leicester march on

Posted:

LEICESTER (AFP) - Shinji Okazakis stunning goal upstaged new Newcastle United manager Rafael Benitez as Leicester City reasserted a five-point lead in the Premier League with a tight 1-0 victory on Monday.Benitez was taking charge of Newcastle for the first time since being appointed as the successor to the sacked Steve McClaren on a three-year contract, but it was Japan international Okazaki, 29, who stole the headlines with an acrobatic 25th-minute overhead kick.Okazakis sixth goal of the season took Leicester five points clear of Tottenham Hotspur, who had trimmed their lead to two points with victory at Aston Villa on Sunday, and nudged Claudio Ranieris men a step closer to an extraordinary title triumph. It was not our best performance, but we showed great spirit, said Ranieri, whose side require 20 points from their final eight matches to win the title.I feel now that I am just concentrating on the next game against Crystal Palace. We are so strong, we think only one game at a time. Step by step, that is our philosophy. It was Newcastles fourth consecutive defeat -- a first this season -- and saw Leicester complete a league double over the north-east giants for the first time since the 1974-75 campaign. The visitors showed more fight than in recent weeks at the King Power Stadium, but they remain in the relegation zone ahead of Benitezs St James Park baptism of fire on Sunday against local rivals and fellow strugglers Sunderland.I will take the positives, said Benitez. We did well. You could see the commitment and the passion. There were a lot of positives and the team showed that they are convinced they can win.Benitez made two changes to the team beaten 3-1 by Bournemouth in McClarens final game, with Vurnon Anita and Aleksandar Mitrovic coming in, while Jack Colback moved from central midfield to left-back.Another novelty saw Moussa Sissoko line up on the left flank and the France international gave the hosts an early scare when he chased down Wes Morgans back-pass and forced Kasper Schmeichel into a hurried clearance. It set the tone for an assured start by Newcastle, for whom lone striker Mitrovic proved an effective battering ram.Ayoze Perez and Colback each shot wide from decent positions, Sissoko headed the wrong side of the post from Daryl Janmaats right-wing cross and Mitrovic played a cross-shot right across the face of goal. But Leicester stirred, Riyad Mahrez seeing a shot blocked by Steven Taylor and Robert Huth nodding the resulting corner over the bar, and midway through the first half they made the breakthrough.Mahrezs free-kick from deep on the right was only cleared as far as Marc Albrighton, loitering on the left-hand edge of the box, and his cross was nodded back by Jamie Vardy for Okazaki to score with a picture-book overhead bicycle kick.Moments later Albrighton almost made it two, jinking this way and then the other before bending a shot a foot wide of the right-hand upright.Perez warmed Schmeichels gloves from range at the other end, but with Leicester keeping Newcastle at arms length, Benitez made a change early in the second half by sending on Andros Townsend for Anita. The change saw Georginio Wijnaldum drop into central midfield and Newcastle were immediately enlivened, Janmaat forcing Albrighton into an alert block and Perez sending a shot into the side-netting.Ranieri responded by introducing Jeff Schlupp for Okazaki, giving Leicester extra cover on the left against the tricky Townsend, while Albrighton switched flanks to the right and Mahrez moved inside.Newcastle goalkeeper Rob Elliot almost gifted Vardy a goal when he dropped a long throw from Christian Fuchs, only to gather it at the second attempt. But the butterflies were all in the stomachs of the home fans in the latter stages, Huth blocking from Sissoko and Newcastle substitute Siem de Jong miscuing from 15 yards, before the whistle drew a roar of relief.

Oil falls as hopes dim for output freeze

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - Oil prices fell Monday on renewed doubts that OPEC will engineer an output freeze amid the global oversupply, with Iran signaling it was not ready to commit any time soon.US benchmark West Texas Intermediate (WTI) for delivery in April slumped $1.32 (3.4 percent) to $37.18 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. In London, Brent North Sea crude for May delivery, the European benchmark for oil, finished at $39.53 a barrel, down 86 cents (2.1 percent) from Fridays settlement. The downturn in the market Monday, following a rebound on Friday, reflects concern about whether or not OPEC is going to get a meeting put together, said Phil Flynn of Price Futures Group.Russian energy minister Alexander Novak said Monday that a meeting of OPEC and non-OPEC oil producers to discuss a deal to freeze production levels will likely take place in April instead of this month, as earlier predicted.Russia and three OPEC producers -- Saudi Arabia, Venezuela and Qatar -- said in February they were ready to freeze their output at January levels if other oil-producing countries joined their initiative. But Iran reportedly announced over the weekend that it would only join a potential production cap after its output has reached pre-sanction levels of 4.0 million barrels per day (bpd).Irans position is that it needs to retrieve its pre-sanction production levels within the framework of OPEC quotas, Novak said. The country could join the freeze later.According to the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries monthly report released Monday, Iran pumped out 3.1 million bpd of crude in February, up from 2.9 million in January.Overall production by the 13-nation cartel fell by 175,000 barrels per day in February to average 32.28 million bpd, largely because of a steep drop in Iraq and to a lesser extent in Nigeria and the United Arab Emirates, the report said.

Dollar higher ahead of Fed meeting

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - The US dollar pushed higher against the euro and pound but flat against the yen Monday ahead of the Federal Reserves two-day policy meeting. The greenback rose to $1.1103 against the euro and $1.4306 on the pound.Analysts dont expect the Fed to announce a rate increase at the conclusion of the meeting on Wednesday. The Fed is likely to deliver a cautious, hedged message that will cite the need to see more data on US growth and point to the weakness of the global economy. But many say the Fed could display enough confidence in the US economy and a pickup in inflation that will signal an increase likely in the coming months. The Fed has raised rates once in this newest rate-tightening cycle, and now expectations for future rate increases in 2016 have been cut to two from four, said Sam Stovall at S&P Capital IQ.No hike next week, but almost certainly guidance suggesting a hike in April, said Chris Low of FTN Financial. The Bank of England, meanwhile, was expected to leave its main lending rate at 0.50 percent at its Thursday meeting. The dollar was essentially unchanged at 113.78 yen as the Bank of Japan met on monetary policy amid some signs of strength. Japanese machinery orders -- a key leading indicator for the economy -- jumped 15.0 percent on a monthly basis in January, offering some rare good news for the slumping economy.

India, New Zealand kick off World T20 Super 10 stage today

NAGPUR (AFP) - Tournament favourites India face an awkward first assignment in their World T20 campaign in Nagpur today (Tuesday) against a big-hitting New Zealand team who are determined to show there is life after Brendon McCullum. After 10 victories in their last official T20 internationals, the hosts are on such a roll that skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni is struggling to dampen expectations that the team are sure-fire winners. But India have a woeful track record against the Black Caps in World T20 tournaments, losing four out of their five previous encounters while the other match was rained off.And although New Zealand have been undermined by inspirational skipper McCullums retirement on the eve of the tournament, their performance in warm-up matches shows they are not lacking for firepower. They thrashed the holders Sri Lanka last Thursday when Colin Munro, Corey Anderson and Grant Elliott all posted half-centuries in rapid time. Skipper Kane Williamson then smashed an entertaining 63 when New Zealand narrowly lost to England in their final warm-up match on Saturday.India also suffered a rare defeat in what was an unofficial T20 international on Saturday when they lost by four runs to South Africa in another high-scoring match. With their powerful openers Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma hitting a purple patch, and the veteran Yuvraj Singh also in good nick, India will expect to post a big total on a batsman-friendly pitch in Nagpur.Like many of his fellow skippers, Williamson believes that India are the team to beat but says his side -- which is still to win a world cup -- do not lack in belief. No doubt India will be possibly the favourites for this tournament but I think all the teams will come here thinking they can win it, he said last week.Dhoni, known as Captain Cool, has been downplaying expectations, joking that the team can still step up a gear or two.We are running on the sixth gear (although) I know the technology has gone into the eighth gear, he quipped.Teams:India (from): Mahendra Singh Dhoni (captain), Ravichandran Ashwin, Jasprit Bumrah, Shikhar Dhawan, Harbhajan Singh, Ravindra Jadeja, Virat Kohli, Mohammed Shami, Pawan Negi, Ashish Nehra, Hardik Pandya, Ajinkya Rahane, Suresh Raina, Rohit Sharma, Yuvraj Singh.New Zealand (from): Kane Williamson (captain), Corey Anderson, Trent Boult, Martin Guptill, Grant Elliott, Colin Munro, Mitchell McClenaghan, Nathan McCullum, Adam Milne, Henry Nicholls, Luke Ronchi, Mitchell Santner, Ish Sodhi, Tim Southee, Ross Taylor.

Key players in Group 2 of World T20

Posted:

NEW DELHI (AFP) - Players to watch from Group 2 of the World Twenty20, featuring India, New Zealand, Pakistan, Australia and Bangladesh, as the tournaments main draw gets underway on Tuesday:Shoaib Malik (Pakistan): The middle-order batsman made his international debut back in 1999 when still a teenager, beginning a rollercoaster ride which seems to be drawing to a close. Still only 34, he dropped a bombshell last November by announcing his retirement from Test cricket, only three matches after a five-year exile. But he remains a key member of Pakistans one-day and T20 squads and a calming influence in a crisis situation. After Pakistans disastrous performance in the recent Asia Cup in Bangladesh, skipper Shahid Afridi will be looking to Malik to mentor the sides young batsmen. Husband of Indian tennis star Sania Mirza, Malik was at the crease when Pakistan lifted the T20 crown in 2009 and would love to repeat the victory in Kolkata on April 3.Ravichandran Ashwin (India): With question marks over Indias pace attack, Ashwin will be the teams go-to man in home conditions. The off-spinner comes into the tournament as the top-ranked T20 bowler in the absence of the West Indies Sunil Narine. With many variations including the carrom ball up his sleeve, Ashwin is feared on Indian wickets and hes also handy with the bat lower down the order.Colin Munro (New Zealand): Forget Kane Williamson, Martin Guptill and Corey Anderson, New Zealand suddenly has another big-hitter in the form of Munro, 29. The unheralded left-hander has been in sensational form this year and starred in the Black Caps 74-run thrashing of Sri Lanka in Thursdays warm-up match in Mumbai. Munro smashed 67, including seven sixes, off 34 balls, leading Anderson to call him one hell of a player. His form is timely for New Zealand, after the retirement of their swashbuckling captain Brendon McCullum.David Warner (Australia): Arguably the most brutal opener in Test cricket, Warner has been handed a new role in the middle order of Australias T20 side. A blistering 77 off just 40 balls against South Africa last weekend showed how quickly he has adapted to the change and he says he is relishing the opportunity to face more spin bowling. Warner made his debut for Australias T20 team even before he played first-class cricket but is now an automatic pick in all formats. His in-your-face approach has landed him in trouble, including his infamous 2013 ban for punching Englands Joe Root in a bar. But as vice-captain in what is a relatively inexperienced squad, much responsibility now rests on the 29-year-olds shoulders.Shakib Al Hasan (Bangladesh): Widely regarded as the best cricketer Bangladesh has produced, Shakib is a canny left-arm spinner and a power middle-order batsman with a wide array of strokes. Shakib is also Bangladeshs most experienced T20 campaigner and has played in domestic leagues in four different countries. Previously ranked as the worlds number one all-rounder, he has been the main factor behind the teams sharp improvement in one-day cricket in the last two years. But the brash 28-year-old has also made headlines for the wrong reasons and he was slapped with a six-month ban in 2014 by the Bangladeshi board for a severe attitude problem after he tried to play in the Caribbean Premier League without permission. He was also suspended briefly last year for a foul-mouthed outburst at an umpire in Bangladeshs domestic T20 tournament.

Key players in Group 1 of World T20

Posted:

NEW DELHI (AFP) - As the group stages of crickets World T20 begin this week, AFP takes a look at some of the players who are expected to light up the tournament. The following is a list of potential match-winners from the five teams competing in Group 1, which features the West Indies, South Africa, England, Sri Lanka and Afghanistan:Chris Gayle (West Indies): Its been a while since Gayle played Test cricket but his appetite for T20s appears undimmed. While the biggest headlines from his recent stint in Australias Big Bash League revolved around his bid to chat up a TV reporter, he also bludgeoned a stunning 12-ball 50. Gayle racked up the highest ever score in T20s while playing for the Bangalore Royal Challengers in the Indian Premier League three years ago, hitting an unbeaten 175 off 66 balls. And he lit up the first World T20 in 2007 by notching up the formats first international century. It could be the last chance for glory for a player, now aged 36, that captain Darren Sammy describes as the most destructive in T20 cricket.Imran Tahir (South Africa): With paceman Dale Steyn struggling with injury, the hopes of South Africas bowling attack will rest largely on the shoulders of leg-spinner Imran Tahir. The 36-year-old has been in the form of his life in 2016 and was the stand-out bowler in the recent T20 series against Australia and England. Born in Pakistan, Tahir broke into the Proteas side at a relatively late age because of issues over his eligibility, but quickly became a fans favourite due to his ability to turn matches. The stylish spinner wears his heart on his sleeve and is a natural entertainer, famed for his often dramatic appeals for a wicket.Joe Root (England): He may have the appearance of a choirboy but the chirpy Yorkshireman is a steely competitor who gets up the noses of opponents. Widely seen as a captain-in-waiting, Root has excelled at all forms of the game and appears to relish the more aggressive style of cricket that England have pursued in the last year. Still only 25, he has already scored more than 6,000 international runs since making his debut in India four years ago. Not only is he now the most prized English wicket, but he is also a handy offbreak bowler.Angelo Mathews (Sri Lanka): The batting all-rounder has been handed the unenviable task of ensuring the struggling islanders at least make a decent fist of trying to defend the World T20 title they won in 2014. Sri Lanka have been on the decline since their triumph in Bangladesh, slumping to eighth in the world rankings, and come into this edition hot on the heels of a torturous Asia Cup campaign. Mathews, 28, was appointed captain in place of the injured Lasith Malinga just hours before the squad were due to leave for India. Progressing to the semis is seen as a tall order, so if Sri Lanka succeed, then their new skipper will regard it as a job well done.Mohammad Shahzad (Afghanistan): A self-proclaimed fan of Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, wicketkeeper-batsman Mohammad Shahzad has not only copied his idols helicopter shot but possesses a similar never-say-die attitude. The portly opener has been in the form of his life and is the main reason Afghanistan made the Super 10 cut. With scores of 61, 41 and 40 in the qualifiers, Shahzad is sure to make any opposition bowler wary of his presence. Apart from his range of colourful shots, the 31-year-old Shahzad is regarded as the teams chief motivator thanks to his chirpy presence behind the stumps.

Kohli urges calm as red-hot India begin campaign

Posted:

NAGPUR (AFP) - Star batsman Virat Kohli urged his team-mates to stay calm Monday amid growing fervour about Indias prospects in the World Twenty20, ahead of the hosts tricky tournament opener against New Zealand. After winning 10 of their last 11 T20 internationals, India are red-hot favourites for the World T20 and former batsman Virender Sehwag said last week he was 99 percent certain they would become the first team to win the trophy for a second time. But Kohli, who is sometimes regarded as something of a firebrand, tried to put a dampener on expectations in a press conference on the eve of the match in Nagpur and said it was important not to get carried away. I think the key is to learn from the past where calmness is required in big tournaments like the ICC (International Cricket Council) events because you can get sort of carried away or over anxious or over excited, said Kohli, who is Indias Test captain. Both those feelings are not great for any side going into a big tournament. What weve learned from playing in big tournaments in the past is that we have to stay as calm as possible and focus on the skills that need to be executed on the field.India have a woeful track record against the Black Caps in World T20 tournaments, losing four out of their five previous encounters while the other match was rained off.And although New Zealand have been undermined by inspirational skipper Brendon McCullums retirement on the eve of the tournament, their performance in warm-up matches shows they are not lacking for firepower. With their powerful openers Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma hitting a purple patch, and the veteran Yuvraj Singh also in good nick, India will expect to post a big total on a batsman-friendly pitch in Nagpur.Kohli, in top form himself, said rookie Indian bowlers Jaspreet Bumrah and Hardik Pandya would also be crucial to the outcome, saying they had showed few signs of nerves in their fledgling international careers.Players like Hardik and Bumrah they have more confidence than when we started out, he said. They have performed in different situations and they have brought that confidence with them into the side. They have backed their skills and I think this is what has been the x-factor for us.Like many of his fellow skippers, Williamson believes that India are the team to beat but says his side -- which is still to win a world cup -- do not lack in belief. No doubt India will be possibly the favourites for this tournament but I think all the teams will come here thinking they can win it, he said last week.
