Tennis: Kerber, Azarenka advance at Miami

Posted:

MIAMI (AFP) - Reigning Australian Open champion Angelique Kerber rallied to reach the fourth round of the ATP and WTA Miami Open on Sunday when 108th-ranked Dutch qualifier Kiki Bertens retired due to illness. The German second seed, who upset top-ranked Serena Williams two months ago at Melbourne for her first Grand Slam title, was leading 1-6, 6-2, 3-0 when Bertens met her at the net and said she could not continue.I was not finding a rhythm at the beginning of the match, Kerber said. I had to stay strong, believe and keep fighting. I hope she gets well soon but Im glad to be in the next round.Kerber next faces Hungarys 49th-ranked Timea Babos, who ousted 18-year-old Japanese 104th-ranked wildcard Naomi Osaka 7-5, 6-0. Kerber is 3-0 against Babos, with 2012 wins at Cincinnati and the London Olympics and another in last years first round of the French Open. The 28-year-old left-hander became the first German woman to win a Slam crown since Steffi Graf in 1999 at Wimbledon, but since then Kerber had lost opening matches at Doha and Indian Wells after withdrawing from Doha with a right thigh injury. After exchanging breaks to open, Bertens broke Kerber twice more -- when the German swatted a forehand wide and on her own backhand drop volley winner -- then held to claim the first set in 31 minutes.Kerber held to 3-2 in the second set when Bertens called for a trainer to help combat the heat and stomach pain. Bertens fought on but Kerber won the next six games before her rival retired.Eighth-ranked Victoria Azarenka, who won 2009 and 2011 Miami titles, eliminated Polish qualifier Magda Linette 6-3, 6-0.The 26-year-old from Belarus is trying to become only the third woman to sweep the Indian Wells-Miami US double after Graf in 1994 and 1996 and Kim Clijsters in 2005.Azarenka hit a backhand winner to break for the first set, then saved two break points in an 11-minute opening game of the second set and breezed to victory from there.I won the first set and I took the energy and I stayed on top, Azarenka said.Argentinas Horacio Zeballos, a lucky loser who replaced Roger Federer in the draw when the 17-time Grand Slam champion withdrew due to illness, advanced to the fourth round, rallying to beat Spains Fernando Verdasco 1-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7/4).Zeballos, ranked 112th, had not won a match since last July before beating countryman Juan Martin Del Potro in the second round. He will face Belgian 15th seed David Goffin on Tuesday for a quarter-final berth.Czech seventh seed Tomas Berdych reached the last 16, outlasting US 31st seed Steve Johnson 6-3, 6-7 (6/8), 6-3.Austrian 14th seed Dominic Thiem moved into the fourth-round path of world number one Novak Djokovic by dispatching 124th-ranked Japanese qualifier Yoshihito Nishioka 6-2, 6-2 in 64 minutes.Thiem captured his fifth career ATP title last month by beating Australias Bernard Tomic in the Acapulco final.Two-time defending champion Djokovic, who won his 11th Grand Slam crown at the Australian Open two months ago, first must get past Portugals 38th-ranked Joao Sousa in a later match at the hardcourt event.Djokovic, trying to match Andre Agassis record of six career Miami crowns, has won 11 Miami matches in a row and 25 of his past 26 matches at the venue, the only loss in the span coming to Tommy Haas in 2013.The 28-year-old Serbian also has won titles at Doha and Indian Wells this year and hopes to complete the US double sweep at Miami and Indian Wells for the third consecutive year.

LOS ANGELES (AFP) - Australian Jason Day beat Louis Oosthuizen 5 and 4 to win his second WGC Match Play crown on Sunday.Day departs Austin, Texas, not only with the trophy but with the world number one ranking, which he regained by reaching the semi-finals on Saturday as American Jordan Spieth was eliminated in the round of 16.Day, the 2014 champion, had beaten defending champion Rory McIlroy 1 up on Sunday morning in a heavyweight semi-final showdown. There was further disappointment in store for McIlroy, as Spains 52nd-seeded Rafa Cabrera Bello defeated the third seed from Northern Ireland 3 and 2 in the consolation final to claim third place.Oosthuizen had beaten Cabrera Bello 4 and 3 in the semis.Day joined Tiger Woods and fellow Australian Geoff Ogilvy as multiple Match Play winners. He opened the title match with a bogey to go 1 down, but had rallied to lead 1 up through four holes and stretched his lead from there. Im very, very thrilled. Its been a memorable week this week not only to win the Dell Match Play Championship but also to get back to number one in the world, said Day, who hurt his back in his first round-robin win on Wednesday and wasnt even sure hed be able to continue in the event. He said the see-saw battle with McIlroy in the semi-final was nerve-wracking.It was a hard match today, said Day, who drained a 13-foot par putt to halve the final hole and seal the victory over McIlroy.I would have been a little disappointed to go through all this stuff and not have a chance of winning (the title), Day said.Day took a one-up lead with a birdie at the first, then made a double bogey at the second.

Squash: Egypt's El Shorbagy, El Sherbini take British Open titles

Posted:

KINGSTON UPON HULL (AFP) - Mohamed El Shorbagy and Nour El Sherbini helped Egypt make three remarkable pieces of history as they became British Open champions in very contrasting finals. The fourth-seeded Sherbini became the first Egyptian woman to win the 94-year-old title.Shorbagy then made it the first time Egypt had won both titles, and it was also the first time that the sports leading nation had provided all four finalists.Top-seeded Shorbagys victory, completing a successful title defence, happened far more comfortably than expected, by 11-3, 11-5, 11-9 against a Ramy Ashour who was physically diminished after four very hard battles following four months away from competition.Sherbini won a very tight battle by 11-7, 9-11, 7-11, 11-6, 11-8 against 18-year-old Nouran Gohar, who narrowly failed to become the youngest ever womens winner. It was evident almost immediately that Ashour was not moving easily and quickly he was a long way down. When he went five points down in the second game as well, it seemed as though a rout was possible. After 15 minutes however Ashours body began to loosen and allow him more flexible movements, which both improved the quality of the rallies and gave the scoreboard a more respectable appearance. Shorbagy drove hard, scurried energetically and made few mistakes. Even when Ashour began working him in the third game, taking leads of 4-2 and 5-4, Shorbagy soon showed he possessed another gearThe match ended with a little drama when Ashour dived full length to make a remarkable retrieve, leapt up and almost earned a let even though Shorbagy had driven the ball fiercely to a winning length. But an appeal to the video review showed that Ashour had not quite done enough to retrive the ball again. Its been a crazy season for me, said Shorbagy. I was telling my mother and my brother that I didnt know how I was going to keep up with what I did last season but Ive won five titles already so this is a dream for me. I have been able to back things up mentally and I am proud of that. But I want to say that Ramy is a great person and a great player. He has achieved so much for our sport, both on and off the court. I really hope that he can be healthy because our matches are just something different and we have such a great rivalry. That may yet come about in future, though this is in fact the first time that Shorbagy has beaten Ashour in a best of five games match on the PSA World Tour.Ashour did not, as he might have, make an excuse of his limited physical abilities, caused by contesting 19 games in his previous four matches. I should have prepared mentally better than I did today, he claimed. On this tour you always play extremely tough matches from start to finish. The womens final by contrast, was full of action and uncertainty. In the deciding game Sherbini was warned for a collision early on, and then frustrated by a controversial no let decision which helped Gohar to reduce a three-point deficit to one at 6-7.It was still one point, at 7-8, when Sherbini pointed out that for the second time in the tournament Gohars badly cut knee had started bleeding again. She was obliged to leave the court to have it bandaged, bringing a nine-minute delay. On resumption Sherbini produced a brilliant forehand counter-hit and then two more heavy, accurate forehand drives to close out the match.I am very sad, Gohar said, just managing to hold back the tears while still on court. I was so close. It was my first final and I didnt quite have the experience to win it.Its really weird to hear that I am champion, said Sherbini, who played in the 2012 final but is still only 20. Im very proud be the first Egyptian (woman) to win. Its a huge thing and hopefully other Egyptians will make us proud.

Amla insists current SA stars can still win a global title

Posted:

NEW DELHI (AFP) - South Africa batsman Hashim Amla insisted his teams World Cup dream lives on, saying the top Proteas stars are still hoping for glory in the near future.Apart from their Champions Trophy triumph in 1998, South Africa have never won a major International Cricket Council event since their post-apartheid return in 1991.Faf du Plessis side have already exited the World Twenty20, even before their final group game against Sri Lanka on Monday, their World Cup jinx striking again.Well listen, this team will win a World Cup or ICC tournament at some stage, I think we have won one in 1998, Amla told reporters at New Delhis Feroz Shah Kotla.South Africa havent enjoyed much success of late, with a T20 series loss against Australia heading into the world event, where the side have lost two of their three matches so far.Its an unfortunate situation that we have found ourselves in. Certainly as a team we havent played our best cricket, admitted Amla. With Amla, AB de VIlliers and Dale Steyn, the Proteas have seen the golden generation fail to claim a global title. Amla assures the big boys will hang around for a while.Lot of us feel we have a few more years left in us, so the Champions Trophy is next year and it would be great if we could make to the next World Cup, that will be ideal, said Amla.We take it as it comes. As long as you are fit and healthy, scoring runs and the form is good and you want to perform for the team then you can make it, he added. With the chokers tag hanging around their necks after a series of narrow defeats in the last two decades, South Africa didnt do their reputation any good after going down in crunch games this time around. The Proteas hopes of clinching a first international trophy were dented in their opening match, when England chased down a record 230 runs to win. They survived a scare to beat minnows Afghanistan by 37 runs, but lost a thriller when the West Indies successfully chased 123 with just two balls to spare, and Sri Lankas defeat to England on Saturday sealed their fate.We havent had a game where our batting and our bowling has clicked in the same game consistently enough and that has been our biggest downfall, Amla said.

Afghanistan's Stanikzai hails historic win over Windies

Posted:

NAGPUR (AFP) - Afghanistan skipper Asghar Stanikzai hailed his underdog side after their historic six-run victory over the powerful West Indies at the World Twenty20 match in Nagpur on Sunday.Afghanistan had failed to qualify for the semi-finals heading into Sundays match, but were determined to take home a consolation victory against the West Indies, who had already made the final four.Stanikzai paid credit to his never-say-die charges especially batsman Najibullah Zadran, named man-of-the-match, after Afghanistan notched up their first ever Super 10 victory at a World T20. Stanikzai said his side, who had lost three straight group stage matches, had learnt so much at the T20 and would now head home and work on our weaknesses. We knew the conditions but the bowlers and fielders played very well. We know about our teams strengths, we have experienced so much at this WT20.After being sent into bat, Stanikzais side posted a respectable 123/7, with Najibullah smashing an unbeaten 48 against the 2012 World T20 champions. The West Indies, who had a perfect record heading into the match with three straight wins, warned that they were not going to let up against Afghanistan. But their run chase got off to a shaky start, with opener Evin Lewis dismissed for a duck, and some excellent Afghanistan spin bowling led by 17-year-old Rashid Khan (2-26) meant the wickets kept falling. With the West Indies needing 10 runs from the final over, Najibullah sprinted several metres along the boundary to take a spectacular, tumbling catch and claim Carlos Braithwaite for 13, just when he looked like bringing the West Indies home, as he had done against South Africa on Friday.Samuel Badree and an injured Andre Fletcher could only manage to push the total to 117 in the three remaining deliveries.Despite the loss, the West Indies still finished top of Group One, and will play either Australia or India, who clash later Sunday in Group Two, in the semi-finals.Captain Darren Sammy said the loss would not derail his sides campaign for the title, describing the loss as a banana skid on the road to the finals. Obviously we are disappointed but we are not going to let this dampen our spirits, we played well, we just need to find a way to chase down those small totals, he said.We have two more steps to take, and we just had a slight banana skid in the race, and we just have to regroup and come back again. After being sent in to bat, Najibullah top scored for Afghanistan, striking four fours and one six in his 40-ball knock to bring cheers from the small but vocal crowd.Afghanistan had lost all of their previous Super 10 matches, but they have won new admirers in India with their aggressive and carefree brand of cricket that has caused some anxious moments for their opponents.Opener Mohammad Shahzad made a confident 24, but was caught off leg-spinner Badree, trying to heave over the infield, just as he was looking exciting.Asghar Stanikzai also made a handy 16. The skipper shuffled down the wicket to smash a six over long on, but was caught the next ball by Dwayne Bravo off Badree attempting the same shot.As the wickets started to tumble thanks to some strong fielding, 23-year-old Najibullah held his nerve, guiding Afghanistan past the 120 mark and to what proved a winning total.

Mortaza blames ICC ban for Bangladesh T20 exit

Posted:

DHAKA (AFP) - Bangladesh skipper Mashrafe Mortaza on Sunday blamed the ICCs suspension of two of its key bowlers for illegal actions for his sides exit from the World Twenty 20.Bangladesh were bundled out of the tournament after four straight losses in the Super 10 group stage -- including a crushing 75-run defeat to New Zealand on Saturday. But Mortaza said they were hobbled by the International Cricket Councils (ICC) decision to bar key pacemen Taskin Ahmed and left-arm spinner Arafat Sunny early in the group stages.Bangladesh, whose side finished runners-up to India in the Asia Cup just before the World T20, made a failed frantic appeal to the ICC to have Taskins suspension overturned. In the last eight matches, Taskins economy rate was the best in the world. So it was always difficult to lose him, Mortaza said at Dhaka airport after returning home. The way he was bowling, we had our plan set around him. We had to change the entire game plan. Before the Australia game when he was banned we could not hold our emotions due to this shock. We accepted that Sunnys action has problems. Even Sunny himself accepted it. But Taskins ban was a complete shock for us, he said.Bangladesh qualified for the group stages after commanding wins over the Netherlands and Oman, and Mortaza said the tournament had been a good learning experience. From now on, whoever we face, if we dont keep making small mistakes, it will not be easy to beat us. This is what I believe. We could not do this in Twenty20 in the past.

England's Roy, Willey fined as emotions spill over at T20

Posted:

NEW DELHI (AFP) - England opener Jason Roy and fast bowler David Willey have been fined at the World Twenty20 after emotions spilled over during their win over Sri Lanka on Saturday. Both players gave solid performances during Englands nailbiting 10-run victory over Sri Lanka in New Delhi to secure a place in the semifinals. But Roy was fined 30 percent of his match fee for swearing and then throwing his bat and helmet upon leaving the field, after being given out lbw for 42 off 39 balls. The International Cricket Council (ICC) said on Sunday that Roy had shown dissent at an umpires decision during an international match.Willey, meanwhile, who took 2-26, was fined 15 percent of his fee after giving a colourful send-off to Milinda Siriwardana when the Sri Lankan was dismissed immediately after hitting the seamer for six. The ICC said he breached the code of conduct for actions or gestures which disparage or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batsman on their dismissal. Both players admitted the offences during a meeting with match referee Jeff Crowe, the ICC said in a statement.England are now likely to face New Zealand in a semi-final encounter in Delhi on Wednesday, with the West Indies having already qualified from their group.
