Paris attacks suspect Abdeslam captured in Brussels raid

BRUSSELS (AFP) - Top Paris attacks suspect Salah Abdeslam, Europes most wanted man, was wounded and captured in a raid by armed police in Brussels on Friday after four months on the run.Abdeslam, 26, who is believed to have played a key logistical role in the November 13 attacks claimed by the Islamic State group that left 130 people dead, sustained a leg injury in the raid, French police said.We got him, said Belgiums Immigration Minister Theo Francken. The Franco-Moroccan is believed to be the last surviving member of the 10-strong commando team that carried out the worst ever terror attack on French soil.He is thought to have fled to Brussels the day after the gun and bombing rampage on Paris nightspots after refusing to blow himself up.His capture came just a day after his brother Brahim, who blew himself up in the massacre, was buried in a discreet ceremony on Thursday in Brussels.A witness told AFP the operation began at around 1530 GMT when dozens of police cars swooped into the gritty Molenbeek neighbourhood of the Belgian capital.I heard about three or four shots fired, but they were muffled as if taking place indoors, said Karim, an Oxfam charity employee who lives in the largely Molenbeek. The arrest came hours after prosecutors revealed that Abdeslams fingerprints were found in an apartment in another part of Brussels following a raid earlier this week in which a suspected IS militant was killed.Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel held a crisis meeting after the arrest with French President Francois Hollande, who was in Brussels for a European Union summit.Belgium has been at the centre of the investigation into the Paris attacks almost from day one, and has come under fire for alleged blunders that let the perpetrators slip under the radar.Abdeslam fled to Brussels after the attacks and is believed to have holed up in a flat for at least three weeks evading detection by the Belgian police. He slipped past three police checks in France as he fled to Belgium just hours after the terror assaults, a source close to the probe said in December.Investigators believe Abdeslam hired one of he cars used in the attacks and then used it to drive suicide bombers to the Stade de France with the task to then blow himself up.But he apparently backed out, and an explosives-filled suicide vest was later found in Paris in a region that mobile phone signals indicated he had been in.Police believe he fled across the border the next morning. Several people have been arrested on suspicion of helping him.The ringleader of the attacks, IS member Abdelhamid Abaaoud, was also from Brussels. He was killed in a raid in Paris in November.Another of the Paris attackers, Bilal Hadfi, was last week buried quietly in the same cemetery as Abdeslams brother. Both had links to Molenbeek, a largely immigrant district which has been a hotbed of Islamist violence for decades.Abdeslam and his brother had run a bar in the area until it was shut down by the authorities a few weeks before the Paris attacks.FingerprintsEarlier this week, Belgian and French police raided an apartment in the Forest district of Brussels, shooting dead a 35-year-old Algerian identified as Mohamed Belkaid, who was living illegally in Belgium.Police found a Kalashnikov assault rifle, extremist Islamic literature and an IS flag near Belkaid after he was shot.He was reportedly on a list of IS fighters leaked last week as a volunteer to commit a suicide bomb attack.Prosecutors then announced on Friday that Abdeslams fingerprints had been found in the Forest apartment.Another Abdeslam fingerprint was found in December in a different Brussels apartment, where investigators believe the fugitive hid for three weeks immediately following the attacks.Prosecutors also said that the man killed in the Forest shootout was very likely a suspect wanted by police in connection with the Paris attacks.Investigations show that the so-called Samir Bouzir, against whom a wanted notice was issued, most probably is the Algerian national Mohamed Belkaid killed Tuesday, a statement said.Authorities in December determined that a fake identity card in Bouzirs name was used to wire 750 euros ($800) from a Brussels Western Union office to the cousin of Abdelhamid Abaaoud four days after the massacre in the French capital.

Love not war as India, Pakistan resume rivalry

KOLKATA, (AFP) - Its one of the worlds fiercest sporting rivalries and previous showdowns have taken place while the countries have been at war, or used as an icebreaker between frosty leaders. But when India and Pakistan face off in crickets World Twenty20, love will be in the air amid a determination to ensure Saturdays game soothes rather than stokes tensions. While theres no shortage of patriotic fervour, a recent Facebook craze has seen thousands of fans posting profile pictures framed by the sporting emblems of their rivals. After being garlanded on his arrival in Kolkata, Pakistani captain Shahid Afridi has spoken of the love he receives from Indian fans. The leading classical singer Shafqat Amanat Ali is set to serenade a packed house at Edens Gardens with Pakistans national anthem, before Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan belts out the rival Indian number.Tensions have prevented the two sides from playing each other in Tests for more than a decade, and the match is only happening because the World T20 is an International Cricket Council tournament.Although there had been signs of a thaw, an attack on an Indian army base in January dashed hopes the countries leaders would watch the match together, as they did at the 2011 World Cup.Afridis message was that his team is delighted to be back in India. We have always enjoyed playing in India and have been loved by Indian crowds more than crowds back home in Pakistan, he said.Cricket has always brought people together and I think politics should be kept away from cricket. After a row over security, Saturdays match was switched from Dharamsala to Kolkata, the capital of India before the sub-continents 1947 partition that led to Pakistans creation.Eden Gardens is one of the worlds biggest grounds, even after a recent refit which reduced capacity to 66,000.Despite the cauldron-like atmosphere, its fans have a reputation for showing appreciation to opposing players.Subrata Nag, a college student, said the home crowd wanted an Indian victory but would be gracious in defeat.Eden Gardens has a history of supporting the team which performs better. We want India to win, but we will support Pakistan team if it plays well, Nag told AFP.Kolkatas police chief has promised maximum security for the visitors. But Pakistani bowling legend Wasim Akram, a popular figure in India as a commentator on a Hindi television channel, said there was no reason to believe the rivalry would be anything but sporting. Its a whole lot of fun. I think not just the teams but the supporters of the two countries do enjoy the clash wholeheartedly, Akram told AFP.Its a festival, people get together at dinner parties... Its a mega-event that everybody gets involved in.Former Indian international Arshad Ayub said the match was always a little bit special. The game brings with it a lot of emotions, excitement and I just hope we have a really good game, said Ayub, Indias manager at the 2015 World Cup when the teams faced off in Australia.Possibly the most famous encounter came during the 1999 World Cup, when the teams played in the middle of a mini-war over the Kargil region in disputed Kashmir.Although there was a lull in fighting during the match, key moments were greeted with volleys of gunfire and cross-border shelling. Some politicians have argued it is inappropriate for the two countries to even contemplate a game of cricket. But Sehyr Mirza, a Pakistani journalist from Lahore who has changed her profile picture to show support for India in Saturdays match, wrote on Facebook: Heres to breaking imaginary boundaries, and nulling the faulty idea of automatic cross-national hate. The success of the social media campaign was even noted by Facebook chief Mark Zuckerberg.Something pretty interesting is happening in India and Pakistan on Facebook right now, Zuckerberg wrote in a post, adding that what unites us is more important than what divides us.The match is expected to be watched by hundreds of millions of television viewers, including in the Indian-controlled part of Kashmir where many residents will be rooting for Pakistan. On Friday, I will go to Jamia Masjid (the grand mosque) and pray for my teams victory over India, said Bashir Ahmed, a shopkeeper in the city of Srinigar. On Saturday, I will see my prayers answered, inshallah.

LHC dismisses petition against NAB, declares the bureau 'independent'

Posted:

Dunya News Report (Yaruq Malik)ISLAMABAD: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has denied the allegations of working under the influence of political personalities and has told the Lahore High Court (LHC) that the bureau has been an ‘independent’ institution since it started working against the corrupt. The petition against NAB was filed by Gohar Nawaz Sindhu, an advocate from the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Lawyer’s Wing. In the petition, it was stated that the Prime Minister of Pakistan, Nawaz Sharif, had heavily criticized the bureau’s investigations under the chairmanship of Qamar Zaman Chaudhry. It was also said that the PM tried to influence the NAB chairman in multiple corruption cases through his remarks. The LHC dismissed the petition against NAB after a brief session stating that the bureau is working ‘independently’.Previously, the Federal Minister for Information Pervaiz Rashid had accused the former military dictator, General (Rtd) Pervez Musharraf, of creating NAB to be used against Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) chief Nawaz Sharif. While speaking to the reporters, the minister also accused Benazir Bhutto of ‘political victimization’ against the PML-N. “Our accountability is being done for the last 20 years. First, it was done by the Pakistan People’s Party government led by Ms Benazir Bhutto and then by former president General Pervez Musharraf. General Musharraf was the architect of NAB and had we committed even a petty mistake, we would have been punished.” said the minister. The minister heavily criticized the people who left the PML-N in 1999 and joined Pervez Musharraf.“Those who were afraid of NAB had left the party and sided with then president General Musharraf in 1999.” Pervaiz Rashid told the reporters. Moreover, NAB initiated disciplinary proceedings against 83 of its own officials. The report stated that 22 NAB officials have been penalized for various charges including the misuse of power and authority while serving at NAB. Chairman NAB, Qamar Zaman Chaudhry highlighted that the bureau finds it necessary to hold its own employees accountable under the internal accountability mechanism (IAM). He added that NAB is committed to cleanse its own hierarchy of officials, in order to resist any misuse of power and authority within the bureau.“A NAB officer should have impeccable integrity and service discipline as he holds others accountable. Disciplinary matters are important for efficiency and effective performance of a system. We have taken strong actions against our own officials by taking a stock of complaints against them.” said the NAB chairman. Furthermore, Justice Amir Hani Muslim had questioned the recent hiring made by NAB and had asked for the total number of people who are working at senior positions in the bureau for accountability. Justice Amir criticized the NAB for misusing the plea bargain act and questioned the Chairman NAB for the credibility of the act used by the institution as a process of consolidation in major corruption cases.“Under the plea bargain act, a man accused of corruption charges worth Rs.100 million is released if he provides Rs. 10 million, then the same man is restored in his office where he gets involved in more corruption worth Rs. 200 million, what sort of a process is this?” said the judge in his remarks. The Justice further added that if procedures under NAB continue in the same manner, then NAB should be shut down immediately.“If this is how NAB works, it must be shut down,” Said Justice Amir. After facing extreme criticism, the National Accountability Bureau provided the Supreme Court of Pakistan with a total of 150 ‘mega corruption’ cases worth billions of rupees. The document included the likes of the Prime Minister of Pakistan Nawaz Sharif, Chief Minister Punjab Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif, Finance Minister Ishaq Dar and many other prominent personalities.NAB also launched an investigation against the Metro Bus Project in Lahore. It is reported that NAB has asked the Punjab Mass Transit Authority to provide all the necessary documentation related to the 27-km Metro Bus Project in Lahore.NAB had requested for information about the senior project officials of the Lahore Development Authority (LDA), Traffic Engineering and Transport Planning Agency (TEPA) and the Planning and Development Department. The Chief Engineer at the LDA, Israr Saeed, has claimed that NAB contacted the LDA three years ago and was given copies of the documents regarding the Metro Bus Project. He added that NAB has not contacted since. However, the Chief Engineer at LDA said that if NAB contacts again, the LDA would co-operate without hesitation.“NAB has not asked us to provide documents related to the metro bus project in recent days. When they had contacted us three years ago, they sought various documents about the project. We provided copies of a number of documents to NAB at that time. However, we will always welcome NAB if it wants to know more about the project,” the Chief Engineer at LDA said.A recent press release stated that NAB, through its prosecution strategies against the corrupt, has recovered Rs 266.544 billion thus far. After facing criticism and a possible shutdown from Justice Amir Hani Muslim, the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) is striking hard against corruption cases across the country. NAB has provided the Supreme Court of Pakistan with ample evidence of alleged ‘foul play’ across Pakistan and within the bureau.
