Musharraf reaches Dubai, greeted by APML leaders

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News/AFP) - Pakistans former military ruler Pervez Musharraf Friday has reached Dubai after he left Pakistan from Karahi airport amidst high security. Musharraf reached Dubai via Emirates flight EK-611. He was greeted by All Pakistan Muslim League leaders (APML) at Dubais airport. The former President left the country early Friday after the Supreme Court lifted a three-year ban on him travelling abroad, airport sources confirmed to AFP.Musharraf boarded an Emirates flight bound for Dubai that departed from Karachi airport at 3.55 am (2255 GMT). He was the last person to be embarked on the plane and then the gate was closed, an airport source told AFP, adding the retired general appeared relaxed.Lawyers for the former president, who is facing multiple charges including treason and murder over the assassination of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto, have said he needs urgent spinal treatment not available in Pakistan.I am going abroad for treatment but will return to face the cases against me, a party spokesman in Karachi quoted him as saying. I am a commando. I love my motherland.Six to eight weeks are required for the treatment and then he would go back home, said Dr Amjad Malik, a spokesman for Musharrafs All Pakistan Muslim League party in Dubai.Musharraf was banned from leaving Pakistan in March 2013 after he returned to the country on an ill-fated mission to contest elections. The former ruler was barred from taking part in the polls and instead faces a barrage of legal cases. In January, Musharraf was acquitted over the 2006 killing of a Baloch rebel leader Nawab Akbar Bugti. But four cases against him remain -- one accusing him of treason for imposing emergency rule, as well as those alleging the unlawful dismissal of judges, the assassination of opposition leader Benazir Bhutto and a deadly raid on Islamabads radical Red Mosque.Last June, the Sindh High Court lifted Musharrafs travel ban, but the federal government, headed by his long-time rival Prime Minister (PM) Nawaz Sharif, appealed the verdict. The Supreme Court on Wednesday upheld the Sindh High Court decision and ordered the government to allow Musharraf to travel.Today, lawyers of General Musharraf filed a proper application and in the light of the Supreme Court decision, the government has allowed him to go abroad for medical treatment, Pakistans Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan confirmed Thursday.Musharrafs lawyers have provided guarantees he will return to Pakistan in six weeks and pledged he will appear in court for several ongoing cases against him, Khan said.Musharraf ousted Sharif from power in 1999 in a bloodless coup and ruled Pakistan until democracy was restored in 2008.Musharraf has been under house arrest in Karachi while the cases have ground through the legal system.

US military personnel punished over Afghan hospital attack

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - US military personnel involved in a devastating air strike on a hospital run by Doctors Without Borders in Afghanistan have been or will be punished, officials said Thursday. The bombing last October of the MSF hospital in Kunduz -- which came as NATO-backed Afghan forces clashed with insurgents for control of the northern provincial capital -- left 42 people dead. The US military carried out an investigation and blamed human error.I can tell you that those individuals most closely associated with the incident have been suspended from their duties and were referred for administrative action, said Colonel Patrick Ryder, a spokesman for US Central Command.More than 10 military personnel face administrative action, another official said.He said this can range from negative counseling, or being told not to do something again, to a letter of reprimand, which generally blocks further promotion. Removal of command is also a possibility.Next week, the Pentagon is due to publish a version of its report on the attack. It will be redacted to remove classified material.President Barack Obama has apologized for the Kunduz attack and the Pentagon has said it will pay compensation to the families of those killed.Doctors Without Borders has appealed in vain for an international investigation of the air strike. It came shortly after the Taliban briefly seized Kunduz the previous month, in their biggest military victory since being ousted in the US invasion of Afghanistan in late 2001.

US oil above $40 first time this year

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - Oil prices rallied for a second straight day Thursday, pushing US crude above $40 a barrel for the first time this year.Prices were lifted by a sharp drop in the dollar and revived optimism that producers would strike a deal next month to freeze output.US benchmark West Texas Intermediate for delivery in April jumped $1.74 (4.5 percent) to $40.20 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. It was the first time WTI closed above $40 since December 3.In London, Brent North Sea crude for May delivery, the European benchmark, finished at $41.54 a barrel, a gain of $1.21 (3.0 percent) from Wednesdays settlement.Bob Yawger of Mizuho Securities USA said the big reason for the rally was Wednesdays Federal Reserve policy signals, which included scaling back the path for future US interest rate increases. The Fed moves sent the dollar lower against other major currencies for a second straight day, weighing on crude oil, which is priced in the US currency. You have a weak dollar today and the reverse correlation with crude oil is going to rally crude, Yawger said. The dollar index, for example, is at a five-month low while at the same time you see a three-month high in crude oil. Thats why you see so much strength. The prospect of production freeze talks on April 17 between OPEC and non-OPEC producers also continued to support the market. But central banks are playing a part, too, said Matt Smith of ClipperData. While producer jawboning has played its part in igniting a crude oil short-squeeze, central banks area are as much responsible for the recent rally, he said.Negative rates, stimulus measures and ongoing accommodative monetary policy have boosted market sentiment.

Dollar continues slide after dovish Fed meeting

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - The US dollar continued to sink Thursday after the Federal Reserve surprised markets with a dovish rate stance. The greenback slid 0.9 percent against the euro, adding to Wednesdays 1.0 percent loss after the Fed halved its projections for interest rate increases this year, citing the slower global economy and turmoil in markets.Analysts had expected the Fed to be more bullish at the end of its policy meeting. At 2100 GMT the dollar was at $1.1317 per euro, and had also lost 1.2 percent at 111.44 yen.The British pound, bolstered by an austere budget proposal with 3.5 billion pounds ($5.0 billion) in spending cuts, added 1.6 percent at $1.4479 after the Bank of England held its key interest rate unchanged, faced with a weak growth outlook at home and abroad.Given the Feds adjusted forward guidance signals an even more gradual path higher in US interest rates than previously anticipated we expect that the US dollar could continue to consolidate lower in the near term, said Eric Viloria of Wells Fargo Securities.Meanwhile, we see an eventual resumption of US dollar strength over time as the Fed moves closer to resuming policy tightening.

Australia begin quest for elusive T20 crown

DHARAMSALA (AFP) - Australia begin their latest quest today (Friday) to clinch the elusive crown of World Twenty20 champions against a New Zealand side who are on a high after their stunning victory over tournament hosts India.Steve Smiths side top the Test rankings and won their fifth 50 over World Cup last year by crushing New Zealand in the final in the Melbourne Cricket Ground. But for all their dominance in the older formats, Australia have struggled in 20 over cricket and have only once made the final of the World T20, back in 2010 when they lost to England.Veteran all-rounder Shane Watson said Australia would not hold back from reminding their trans-Tasman rivals about the outcome of last years World Cup when they meet again in Fridays match in Dharamsala. But he acknowledged the Black Caps would be no pushovers this time and would be full of confidence after their shock 47-run victory over red-hot favourites India on Tuesday. We are going to have to play very well because they are going to be very confident leading into this game, Watson told reporters in the Himalayan hill town which is home to the Dalai Lama.A 3-0 home defeat to India in January underlined Australias frailties in T20 cricket although there were encouraging signs earlier last month when they beat South Africa 2-1 away.In Johannesburg, Glenn Maxwell spanked a career best 75 off 43 balls in a world record fourth wicket stand of 161 with David Warner, highlighting the all rounders growing importance to the team.Glenn Maxwell is a huge player in our team, said Watson. The way he bats, whether the ball is turning or whether its not turning, his array of shots when he gets into his innings is incredible. He hits the ball around the ground.Maxwell is also expected to be busy bowling his offbreaks against a side who struggled against Indias spinners.New Zealand spinners Ish Sodhi, Mitchell Santner and Nathan McCullum shared nine wickets against the Indians, leaving the selectors with a headache over whether to bring back pacemen Trent Boult or Tim Southee.Coach Mike Hesson has been trying to keep the teams feet on the ground since the India win, telling New Zealand radio that qualification for the semis in a pool that also includes Pakistan and Bangladesh is a tough ask.Great start for us but we know that even just getting out of the pool is going to be incredibly difficult, he told Newstalk ZB.Teams:New Zealand (from): Kane Williamson (captain), Corey Anderson, Trent Boult, Martin Guptill, Grant Elliott, Colin Munro, Mitchell McClenaghan, Nathan McCullum, Adam Milne, Henry Nicholls, Luke Ronchi, Mitchell Santner, Ish Sodhi, Tim Southee, Ross Taylor.Australia (from): Steven Smith (captain), David Warner, Ashton Agar, Nathan Coulter-Nile, James Faulkner, Aaron Finch, John Hastings, Josh Hazlewood, Usman Khawaja, Mitchell Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Peter Nevill, Andrew Tye, Shane Watson, Adam Zampa.

Pressure on England, says South Africa skipper

Posted:

MUMBAI (AFP) - South Africa skipper Faf du Plessis says England will feel added pressure to avoid a second defeat at the World Twenty20 when the two sides clash in Mumbai on Friday.England are in need of a win after losing their opening match while the Proteas want to get their bid for a first international trophy off to a strong start.Captain Eoin Morgans England side were blown away by a Chris Gayle century at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Wednesday night as the West Indies won by six wickets.I think theres a little bit more pressure on the team thats lost their first game, du Plessis told reporters during his pre-match press conference on Thursday. If we were in their shoes and lost the first game you would feel that pressure going into the second game because you know if you lose youre possibly going to be out, he added. For South Africa the night match marks the start of their quest to once and for all remove the chokers tag that du Plessis admits has become a monkey on the back of their team.Since their readmission in 1991 after the apartheid era ban, the Proteas have been the nearly men of world cups in both T20 and 50 over cricket, falling agonisingly short of the final on several occasions.Despite their failure to win a major trophy, South Africa are one of the tournament favourites and are currently in third place in the T20 world rankings. They boast a formidable batting line-up that includes the captain himself, Hashim Amla, AB de Villiers and Quinton de Kock and du Plessis said confidence was high going into the Super 10 Group 1 match. For me our whole batting line up looks theyre in form so thats a dangerous sign for the opposition, the 31-year-old warned.Englands Morgan will be looking for more from his batsmen after they fell short of his target of 200, finishing on 182 for six, and from his bowling attack who he said performed at around 80-90 percent. The English skipper rued losing the toss to West Indies captain Darren Sammy, who opted to field, and Morgan feels the game of chance will again play a big part on Friday in Mumbais humid conditions.Even at the toss I said I was going to chase so it could be a big part for me in the South Africa game, he said. The captain said before the tournament that he would use all 15 squad members at his disposal, and replacing David Willey with powerful fast bowler Liam Plunkett is a likely switch for Fridays do-or-die contest.Morgan said he treated every match as a must-win game and the next encounter is no different as a second defeat would all but end Englands chances of progressing to the semi-finals.Batsman-wicketkeeper Jos Buttler backed his players to dust themselves down and bounce back with a victory during their second tournament outing at the Wankhede. The games been and gone and well be really focused tomorrow, he said.Weve got characters in that dressing room that enjoy that occasion. They will stand up to it and look to take the game on.TeamsSouth Africa (from): Faf du Plessis (captain), Kyle Abbott, Hashim Amla, Farhaan Behardien, Quinton de Kock, AB de Villiers, JP Duminy, Imran Tahir, Chris Morris, David Miller, Aaron Phangiso, Kagiso Rabada, Rilee Rossouw, Dale Steyn, David Wiese.England (from): Eoin Morgan (captain), Moeen Ali, Sam Billings, Jos Buttler, Liam Dawson, Alex Hales, Chris Jordan, Liam Plunkett, Adil Rashid, Joe Root, Jason Roy, Ben Stokes, Reece Topley, James Vince, David Willey.

Dilshan powers Sri Lanka to win over Afghanistan

Posted:

KOLKATA (AFP) - Opener Tillakaratne Dilshan said he was desperate to score some big runs after steering holders Sri Lanka to a six-wicket win over a spirited Afghanistan in the World Twenty20 on Thursday. The big-hitting Dilshan kept his nerves under pressure and carried his bat through for an unbeaten 83 off just 56 balls, his 13th half-century in the shortest format of the game. His effort helped the islanders surpass Afghanistans 153-7 with seven balls to spare at the Eden Gardens stadium in Kolkata. In my last two games I had two ducks. I needed runs going into the big games. Im really happy that I finished the game, Dilshan, 39, said after being named man-of-the-match. In these kinds of tournaments, the first match is very important. Senior guys need to stand up and do it for the team (so that) the middle order can bat around us.Afghanistan, the only non-Test team left in the fray, paid the price for some sloppy fielding after an impressive effort with the bat that saw skipper Asghar Stanikzai make a fine 47-ball 62.Dilshan gave Sri Lanka a flying start, smacking fast bowler Dawlat Zadran for two sixes on the trot, including one that came off his famous Dilscoop shot which typically sails over the wicketkeepers head.Off-spinner Mohammad Nabi briefly put the brakes on Sri Lanka by dismissing opener Dinesh Chandimal for 18, before 17-year-old leg-spinner Rashid Khan accounted for Lahiru Thirimanne (six).Wicket-keeper Mohammad Shahzad then sent back Thisara Perera with a direct throw at the stumps as Sri Lanka slipped to 85-3, but Dilshan kept his cool to ensure a smooth finish for his side in the end.Our total was good, not bad. We were 10-15 runs short. But Dilshan played really well, he took responsibility and batted well, Stanikzai said. Our fielding wasnt good, we missed some chances. Well try to improve in the next games. Earlier, Stanikzai led his side by example while Samiullah Shenwari chipped in with a handy 31 to help Afghanistan recover from a shaky 51-4.Paceman Thisara Perera picked up 3-33 in an otherwise disappointing show by the Sri Lankan bowlers who let the Afghans off the hook after a promising start.New Sri Lankan T20 captain Angelo Mathews gave the islanders the key breakthrough by having in-form opener Shahzad caught at mid-on for eight.Shahzad, who came into the match with a top-score of 61 in the qualifiers, lobbed an easy catch to Dushmantha Chameera as he tried to pull to the legside.Shahzads opening partner Noor Ali Zadran smacked paceman Nuwan Kulasekara for two boundaries in a row before being bowled by Rangana Herath (2-24) for a 23-ball 20.Afghanistan suffered another blow soon after when Karim Sadiq (zero) nicked one behind off Perera, but Stanikzai steadied the innings with his quickfire knock, his best in Twenty20 internationals.Stanikzai seemed to clear the ropes easily, twice lofting spinner Milinda Siriwardana into the stands, much to the delight of a small but noisy group of Afghan fans. The skippers counter-attack came to an end when he was caught by wicketkeeper Chandimal off Perera in the 19th over.Mathews was relieved his team managed to put behind the recent disappointments and start off their campaign with a win.It was a much-needed victory for us because we havent played well in the recent past, he said.Credit should go to the Afghanistan batters as well because they really put us under pressure.
