IMF approves $502m tranche for Pakistan Posted: ISLAMABAD (APP) - The International Monetary Fund (IMF) on Friday approved the $502 million tranche for Pakistan after the latest review of a bailout package awarded in 2013.According to a statement issued by the finance ministry here, the IMFs board meeting was held in Washington which considered the 10th review report of the Extended Fund Facility (EFF) support programme and accordingly approved the next tranche of $502 million for Pakistan. The tranche comes as economic activity remains robust, the IMF said, welcoming what it termed the governments strong performance in the second quarter of fiscal year 2015-16.A weak cotton harvest, declining exports and a more challenging external environment pose a threat to growth prospects, the IMF had said, while real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth is expected to reach 4.5 per cent in FY15-16.The main priority, the IMF said, is further consolidation gains and strengthening the long-term resilience of the economy.Lower oil prices, planned improvements in power supply and investment in relation to the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, construction and acceleration of credit growth are seen as the main drivers behind the forecasted growth.Once the latest disbursement is made, the IMF will still have to release $1.1 billion of the total $6.7 billion loan agreed three years ago.Federal Minister for Finance Ishaq Dar has welcomed the approval by the IMF.He said the process of economic reforms undertaken by the incumbent government led the country to a stage where it has achieved macro-economic stability and is now well set on the path to economic growth. |

Windies into semis after thrilling win over S. Africa Posted: NAGPUR (AFP) - West Indies captain Darren Sammy hailed a job well done after his side clinched a spot in the World Twenty20 semi-finals with a tense three-wicket win over South Africa Friday. The Windies successfully chased down a target of 123 with just two balls to spare for a third consecutive Group One victory, becoming the second team to qualify for the last four after New Zealand. We came here to win this match and qualify, and weve done that, so were really happy, Sammy said after his sides victory at Nagpurs Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium. The skipper admitted he was feeling butterflies as the Windies made hard work of it towards the end, going into the last over requiring nine runs to win.We were under pressure chasing a low total, and every decision we took out there they responded. But I really want to commend my team, said Sammy. It was South Africas second defeat of the tournament and means England can secure a berth in the semis at their expense with a win against Sri Lanka on Saturday.Proteas captain Faf du Plessis rued his sides poor total of 122 for eight after Sammy won the toss and elected to field first. It felt like the whole game we were half a step behind West Indies and we were trying to catch up the whole time, Du Plessis said. The Windies rode on a gritty 44 from Marlon Samuels to prevail in a close finish. It looked like the Windies would canter home but Imran Tahir grabbed two wickets in the 17th over and the Caribbean side ended up going into the final over with a lot to do.Carlos Brathwaite hit a massive six before precocious fast bowler Kagiso Rabada bowled a wide. Brathwaite then grabbed a quick run before Denesh Ramdin carried the Windies over the line with a single.Samuels 32-run partnership for the third wicket with Johnson Charles (32) set up the chase only for the team to lose their way in the middle overs.Andre Fletcher made 11 while Chris Gayle surprisingly shone with the ball rather than the bat.The big-hitting left hander smashed a four off his first ball but was clean bowled by Rabada off his second.Gayle had earlier claimed two wickets as South Africa suffered from lack of partnerships in a crucial game for their survival in the tournament.Left-hander Quinton de Kock top-scored for the Proteas with 47 while David Wiese, batting at number seven, notched 28.Hashim Amla was run out for one on just the third ball of the innings.Captain Faf du Plessis came in and didnt last long, scoring nine off seven balls before being caught by Sulieman Benn off paceman Andre Russell. It quickly got worse for the Proteas when Gayle, who has barely turned his arm over in recent years, grabbed the wicket of Rilee Rossouw.Rossouws dismissal, which the dreadlocked Gayle celebrated with a little jig, left South Africa reeling on 20 for three after three overs.South Africa needed AB de Villiers to put a big score on the board but the classy stroke-player could only manage 10 before being cleaned up by Dwayne Bravo.David Miller then came in but lasted only four balls, bowled by Gayle. With just one win from two games, South Africa face the prospect of being dumped out before theyve completed all their group-stage matches and their future in the tournament is now out of their hands. If England defeat Sri Lanka in New Delhi then South Africas clash against the islanders on Monday becomes a dead rubber and the Proteas long wait for a first international trophy will continue. |
Waqar laments decline of Pakistan after exit Posted: MOHALI (AFP) - Coach Waqar Younis on Friday lamented the decline of Pakistan cricket after his team were knocked out of the World Twenty20 with a disappointing 21-run defeat against Australia.A wayward Pakistan let Australia off the hook after having them in early trouble at 57-3 in the must-win group tie at Mohali. The Aussies were quick to capitalise on some shoddy bowling and fielding, posting a commanding 193-4 before restricting Shahid Afridis men to 172-8.The early ouster of the 2009 champions from the tournament has put skipper Afridi as well as Younis under pressure, with both likely to lose their jobs sooner than later.Younis, a dreaded fast bowler in his playing days, did not mince his words as he called for an overhaul back home. We have just lost the match and whatever I say will look like an excuse, Younis, 44, said at a post-match press conference. If we think deeply we will see that Pakistan hasnt seen any international cricket for last seven-eight years and that has hurt us. And that has started showing now. Earlier we had match winners like Saeed Ajmal and Mohammad Hafeez who could bowl.Yes, I would say that Pakistan cricket is in a bit of a decline and we need to control it. We will have to look at our domestic cricket and infrastructure.Pakistan finished their campaign with three defeats from four outings, including a loss at the hands of arch foes India in Kolkata.Their preparations were not helped by their late departure in a row over security and Pakistan have not been able to play a major cricket nation since a deadly attack on the Sri Lankan team bus in 2009.There were flashes of individual brilliance from players like Sharjeel Khan and Mohammad Amir during the tournament in India but the team failed to fire as a unit, prompting speculation of a rift in the dressing room.Younis was quick to dismiss such talk, insisting all was well with his team.I dont think there is any truth in these talks, he said.Even I am a bit surprised and disappointed that such rumours are being spread. We are not playing good cricket and thats the bottom line. And as a result of this we have to face all this.On his own job being on the line, Younis said he would call on the Pakistan Cricket Board chief soon and see what needs to be done. |
I'm not fit to be Pakistan skipper: Afridi Posted: MOHALI (AFP) - Shahid Afridi said he was no longer up to captaining Pakistan after his teams exit Friday from the World Twenty20 but held back from making an announcement on his possible retirement.Going into the match against Australia, the 36-year-old had strongly hinted it would be his last appearance for his country after nearly two decades of international cricket. But Afridi, who quit as Pakistans Test captain back in 2010 and has also already called time on his ODI career, said he still felt fit enough to carry on playing at the highest level. I will announce it in my country. Whatever is better for the country, I will go with that, Afridi said at the post-match ceremony in Mohali when asked if he was going to retire.I will see my form. There is pressure, media pressure. As a player, I am fit. As a captain, I am not fit, he added after the 21-run defeat against Australia.Afridi is highest wicket-taker in the history of Twenty20 cricket with 97.And the man known as Boom Boom for his explosive batting, has also hit a record-breaking number of sixes in all three formats since making his international debut in October 1996. |
Former greats lament Pakistan World T20 exit Posted: ISLAMABAD (AFP) - Former Pakistani players Friday said the countrys national cricket squad could not be worse after Australia pushed it out of World T20.James Faulkner took a record five-wicket haul after Steve Smith hit an unbeaten half century as Australia post knocked Pakistan out of the World Twenty20 on Friday. They have lagged behind so much that they do not stand a chance anymore, former Pakistani skipper Rameez Raja said. They do not have the quality, they do not have any gems. You have to sack six or seven of them and bring in new players and they will take three to four years to perform, Raja said just after the match.Raja said that the entire cricket system had to be changed and decisions should be taken for cricket, not individuals.Sikandar Bakht, former paceman called for cancelling contracts of all players and an in depth performance review.PCB (Pakistan Cricket Board) should cancel the central contracts of all players and hold a detailed review of players performance, Bakht said.A line has to be drawn now. I feel that even if you send in the under-19 cricket team, they would perform better than them.Pakistani captain Shahid Afridi in his post-match reaction said that he would take a decision about his future next week.I will go home and in next 4-5 days will take a decision, Afridi said.Raja said that retirement was a tough decision and Afridi should be given time to ponder over it.It would be a difficult decision for Afridi, because he has a fan following. He should go home and decided that to call it a day and exit gracefully because he is such a great cricketer and all rounder, Raja said.Mohammad Yousaf, Pakistans former test batsman, urged the PCB, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, former cricket greats, media and cricket fans to come together and get Pakistan out of its misery. Now PCB and the Prime Minister have to think about how they can save the cricket team. It is already too late. We have to fix it and urge the media and the nation to play a role in it, Yousaf said.We should improve our first class cricket, because only it will produce good players who will be able to give performance, he added. |
Australia knock Pakistan out of World T20 Posted: MOHALI (AFP) - James Faulkner took a record five-wicket haul after Steve Smith hit an unbeaten half century to help Australia post a 21-run win and knock Pakistan out of the World Twenty20 Friday. The victory means Australia remain in the hunt for a place in next weeks semi-finals with two wins from three matches and sets up an effective knock-out tie against India on Sunday. The stage for a comfortable Australian win was set by an unbeaten 61-run knock from skipper Smith who shared key stands with Shane Watson (44 not out) and Glenn Maxwell (30) to rescue his side from a shaky 57-3.Faulkner took four wickets from his last six balls and also accounted for the dangerous Sharjeel Khan (30) to finish with 5-27, the best figures by an Australian in a T20 international. Pakistan could only manage 172-8 in reply to Australias strong 193-4 on a docile track in Mohali.Rookie leg-spinner Adam Zampa chipped in with two wickets in a commendable all-round show by the reigning 50-over world champions. The defeat saw Pakistan, the 2009 winners, make a humiliating early exit from the marquee T20 tournament. Pakistan lost wickets at regular intervals and were never really in the hunt despite a valiant counter-attack by Khalid Latif (46). After losing opener Ahmed Shehzad (one) cheaply in the third over, Sharjeel tried to speed things up before chopping on to his stumps off Faulkner.Umar Akmal (32) lost his wicket to Zampa and Boom Boom Shahid Afridi was stumped after he danced down the track to attempt an ambitious shot to the same bowler. The Australians were in early trouble but Smith, 26, batted sensibly to ensure his side did not squander the advantage of batting first.Smith hit seven boundaries in his 43-ball knock and completed his second half-century in T20 internationals in the process.Watson, who has announced he will quit international cricket after the tournament, came in lower down the order and provided some late fireworks in a 21-ball knock which included three sixes.Paceman Wahab Riaz and spinner Imad Wasim took two wickets each in an otherwise lacklustre show by the Pakistani bowlers and fielders.Australia opted for a new opening pair in Aaron Finch and Usman Khawaja for the crunch tie at the Punjab Cricket Association ground.Khawaja, enjoying a purple patch with the bat, showed his aggressive intent early as he hit an off-colour Mohammad Sami (53-0) for two fours in the first over of the innings. The left-hander then lofted Riaz over the fence for a six but he was out one ball later, losing his middle-stump to the fast bowler. Riaz then dismissed David Warner (nine) with a ball that knocked off the stumps in a spectacular fashion.Finch (15) was the next to go, failing to read a slow and low ball from Wasim.Smith and Maxwell then steadied the innings, with a quick-fire 62-run partnership before Wasim made the breakthrough. |
Root shrugs off pressure for World T20 crunch Posted: NEW DELHI (AFP) - Fresh from visiting the worlds most beautiful monument, Joe Root said he would be happy for England to win ugly in Saturdays crunch World Twenty20 showdown against Sri Lanka.Along with teammates David Willey, Jos Buttler and Liam Plunkett, Root spent Thursday visiting the Taj Mahal in northern India as the team tried to relax ahead of the must-win match in New Delhi.Speaking to reporters on the eve of the match, Englands premier batsman said dealing with pressure was part of the job and the team knew it cant afford any slip-ups against the title holders. There is always pressure. Its a must win game, but its always been like that since we got here, said the Yorkshireman. The pressure is no more than it has been throughout the whole thing.Although England pulled off a stunning win against South Africa last weekend when they set a new World T20 record for a successful run chase, their scratchy win over Afghanistan on Wednesday showed they are yet to fire on full cylinders.Root admitted that Englands batsmen and bowlers had yet to perform in unison but said the result rather than the quality of the performance was the main thing. We have absolutely not performed our best in the competition yet ... and the really pleasing thing for me is that we are finding ways of winning games of cricket, said Root. Its about getting across the line tomorrow.Root has been Englands best batsman in the tournament so far and his 83 off 44 balls was the highlight of an evening of astonishing stroke play against South Africa. But he made just 12 against Afghanistan, part of a string of failures by the top-order who had a to rely on a cameo from Moeen Ali Root to save their blushes. If were being honest then we have not done one part of our game consistently well. There have been times when we bowled extremely well and times when we have batted well. The exciting thing for me is when that comes together and when we can consistently do that then we would be a very hard side to beat.Englands players have sometimes been accused of letting developing a siege mentality on tour but the trip to the Taj gave a hint of the more relaxed atmosphere under the captaincy of Eoin Morgan.Being only three hours away in the car, it was a no-brainer for me again to experience a bit of India and to see one of the wonders of the world, said Root. It was a really enjoyable day.England are currently second in group four and are handily placed to reach the semi-finals by seeing off a Sri Lankan team which has been hit by injuries and retirements. But they will want to record a decisive win with run-rate potentially coming into the equation to decide the outcome of a group which also includes the West Indies and South Africa. |
Will take years to replace Lankan legends - Perera Posted: NEW DELHI (AFP) – All-rounder Thisara Perera said Friday Sri Lanka would take years to get over the retirement of batting legends Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene while warning that paceman Lasith Malinga was irreplaceable. The defending champions have struggled to compile substantial totals in the ongoing World Twenty20 in India in the absence of Jayawardene and Sangakkara who have both retired since the 2014 triumph.Everybody knows they are legends and we will not be able to fill their place for the next five or six years, in my personal opinion, Perera said on the eve of a must-win match against England in New Delhi. Now down at eight in the T20 rankings, Sri Lanka had a disastrous showing at the Asia Cup and came into the sixth edition of the T20 tournament after recently changing their coach and captain.Following a less than convincing win over minnows Afghanistan in their opening encounter of the tournament, they were then badly beaten by the West Indies.Their already slim hopes of defending their trophy suffered a further below after the start of the tournament when leading pace bowler Lasith Malinga withdrew from the squad after a knee injury.Perera described the sligy Malinga as a one of a kind, saying a player such as him would never, never come again.Perera, who bats left-handed and is a right-arm pacer, said Sri Lanka had to improve on Sundays showing against the West Indies, when they lost by seven wickets, to stand any chance of beating Englad. We have to win the next match, otherwise we have to go home. We have to do something better than the last match, said Perera.Sri Lankas final match is against South Africa in New Delhi on Monday night but that tie will effectively be a dead rubber if they lose to England. |
Boycott bids for Yorkshire board return Posted: LONDON (AFP) - England great Geoffrey Boycott will discover on Saturday whether he has been successful in his bid to return to the Yorkshire board when the English county champions hold their annual general meeting.Former Yorkshire opener Boycott previously served on the board between 2007 and 2012. He was also Yorkshires president in 2012 and 2013, since when they have won back-to-back Championships, with a largely homegrown team coached by former Australia fast bowler Jason Gillespie. The 75-year-old Boycott, a respected television analyst, has insisted he does not want to interfere in cricket matters but was standing again because of concerns over Yorkshires debt of more than 20 million pound ($28 million). However, the current Yorkshire chairman Steve Denison, is not a fan of Boycott returning to the committee, as he made clear in a letter to club members where he said: We need specialist skills on our board in relation to finance and construction, and thats the direction of the board over the next few years.Im not trying to cause any problems, create any trouble, Boycott told the Yorkshire Post. The debt has gone from 5 million pound in 2002 to 24 million pound in 12 years...We cant go on borrowing money -- 24 million pound is huge... thats a recipe for disaster.Former Yorkshire and England batsman Michael Vaughan praised Boycotts passion but said a return to committee duties would not be beneficial for either his fellow television pundit or the county.I like it when he says hes not trying to cause any trouble, said Vaughan. Well, he is. Hes certainly done that.Hes passionate, I love him to bits, but hes 75 years of age. Come on Geoffrey, go and have a game of golfMeanwhile Gillespie insisted the committee intrigue would not affect his side.It hasnt been a distraction, he said. All that stuff will sort itself out.Boycott, arguably the best defensive batsman of his generation, played for Yorkshire from 1962-1986 and had a stint as county captain. But the final years of his career were dogged by bitterness and division, with Yorkshire split into pro and anti Boycott camps during what was a largely lean spell for English crickets most successful county. |
Pakistan, Iran vow to boost economic ties Posted: ISLAMABAD (AFP) - Pakistan and Iran agreed on Friday to enhance economic ties and open two more border crossings to increase trade, the government said.Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, who arrived on a two-day state visit to Pakistan, met with Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and held talks on matters of mutual interest, Islamabad said in a statement. Our trade and economic ties have suffered due to sanctions. We have agreed to strengthen our bilateral ties in diverse areas of trade, economy and energy, the statement quoted Sharif as saying. After the talks, Sharif and Rouhani witnessed the signing of six agreements related to rade and economy including a Five Year Strategic Trade Cooperation Plan.Sharif said both countries also decided to open two additional crossing points along their border to encourage trade .Rouhani, according to the Pakistani statement, said the two sides discussed ways to explore new opportunities for cooperation in the energy sector, including the export of electricity from Iran to Pakistan. He said they also discussed ways to boost bilateral trade and to move forward a free trade agreement between Pakistan and Iran. The Iranian President said the two sides also explored the possibility of sea trade between Pakistans Gwadar Port and Irans Chahbahar Port. Pakistan and Iran consider each others security as their own security, Rouhani said, adding that there was a will and resolve of the two countries to combat extremist and terrorist groups and not to allow such elements to shatter peace in the region. Pakistan is counting on a joint project with Iran to solve a long-running power crisis that has sapped economic growth. A $7.5-billion Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline intended to feed Pakistani power plants was inaugurated with great fanfare in March 2013. But the project immediately hit quicksand in the form of international sanctions on Tehran.Tehran has built its own section of the 1,800-kilometre (1,100-mile) pipeline, which should eventually link its South Pars gasfields to the Pakistani city of Nawabshah near Karachi. As part of an ambitious $46 billion economic corridor linking western China to the Middle East through Pakistan, Beijing recently started work on the section of pipeline between Nawabshah and the port of Gwadar close to the Iranian border. |
