Flooding sparked by storm kills 31 in Vietnam

Posted:

HANOI—Severe floods triggered by a short-lived storm have killed at least 31 people and cut off traffic in several areas in central Vietnam over the last three days, forcing authorities to evacuate tens of thousands of people. Most of the deaths were due to drowning, as water levels rose to nearly three meters in some villages. The government said Saturday that floods had killed 13 people in Binh Dinh, seven in Quang Ngai and two each in Phu Yen, Quang Nam and Gia Lai provinces.“Water is everywhere,” said Le Cong Dung, an official with the storm department in Quang Nam, where the tourist resort town of Hoi An has reported flood water of up to 0.67 meters deep.Around 1,400 people, including foreign tourists, have been evacuated from that area, the government said earlier Saturday, adding that authorities have evacuated more than 17,600 people from flood-prone areas in five central provinces.Floods have also inundated tens of thousands of houses and isolated several areas, the government said in a statement. The storm, named Podul as it approached the coastline of south central Vietnam Thursday night, weakened to a tropical depression before making landfall. It triggered heavy rains in Quang Nam, Quang Ngai, Binh Dinh, Phu Yen and Khanh Hoa provinces, with rainfall ranging between 100 millimeters and 300 millimeters, according to the government.

New clashes in Libya's Tripoli as toll tops 40

Posted:

TRIPOLI (AFP) - Fresh clashes erupted in Tripoli Saturday as the death toll from a shootout at an anti-militia protest rose to 43 and the weak, post-revolutionary government appealed for restraint.More than 450 people were wounded when Fridays protest sparked clashes in the capital between militias that continued overnight, Justice Minister Salah al-Marghani said.Prime Minister Ali Zeidan, who was briefly abducted by militiamen last month in an incident that underscored growing instability, appealed for restraint and a halt to the clashes, warning that the coming hours and days will be decisive for the history of Libya. The country has seen a surge in unrest as former rebels who helped topple Moamer Kadhafis decades-old regime in 2011 have scoffed at government demands to lay down their arms. The latest violence erupted when protesters carrying white flags marched on a cluster of villas that serve as the Tripoli base of the Misrata brigade -- made up of battle-hardened fighters from the western city of the same name -- and demanded they leave the capital.Gunmen opened fire from inside the villas at Gharghour, killing several protesters and prompting rival militias to attack the base, setting part of it ablaze. The coastal city of Misrata, 200 kilometres (120 miles) east of Tripoli, saw some of the 2011 uprisings fiercest fighting. The Misrata brigade attacked an army barracks early Saturday, igniting another round of clashes in which one person was killed and eight wounded, according to Colonel Mosbah al-Harna, commander of another brigade nominally under the authority of the defence ministry.Harna said the Misrata militiamen then looted the base, taking away vehicles, weapons and ammunition.More fighters from Misrata tried to enter Tripoli from the east, sparking clashes with rival militias before the column of reinforcements pulled back several kilometres. The Shield of Libya, another former rebel brigade formally under government control, later announced that it had secured Gharghour as the Misrata fighters withdrew.A Shield of Libya brigade in the restive eastern city of Benghazi was itself the target of a protest in June that also turned bloody, with more than 30 people killed. The road into Tripoli from the east was meanwhile closed off, an AFP journalist said, and the city was quiet on Saturday evening, with many businesses and shops closed.

Tribal fight 'kill 100' in Sudan's Darfur

Posted:

KHARTOUM (AFP) - Heavy fighting in a border region of Sudans Darfur has killed 100 people, state radio reported on Saturday, while another source said Chadian soldiers were among the recent dead. The number of casualties has grown to 100 after battles between the Misseriya and Salamat tribes, Radio Omdurman said in a brief bulletin sent by SMS.The dispatch did not say what time period its toll covered, but intense battles between the two groups have flared again this month in southwestern Darfur.Radio Omdurman said fighting had stopped but a Misseriya leader told AFP battles continued on Saturday around southwest Darfurs Umm Dukhun town, with more than 50 killed on both sides.Chadian troops in a joint force with Sudan were among those killed in recent fighting, a humanitarian source said Saturday. The source did not know how many Chadians died in Thursdays fighting with Salamat tribesmen around Umm Dukhun, on the border with Chad.Chadian deaths are confirmed, said the source, who asked for anonymity.Sudan restricts access to the remote area, making it difficult to confirm details of the fighting.Soldiers from Chad and Sudan have cooperated to jointly patrol their border region since ties between the two countries began to improve in 2010.Off-and-on clashes between the Salamat and a rival Arab tribe, the Misseriya, had already killed more than 200 people since April in southwestern Darfur. In Thursdays incident, the Salamat attacked Umm Dukhun and a camp for displaced people on its outskirts, in what the source called a big battle. They were eventually repulsed by the mixed Chad-Sudan forces, and pushed into Chad where the forces chased them for a while, the source said.During the pursuit some of the Chadians were killed, most likely inside Chadian territory, the source said, adding that Salamat casualties were apparently heavy. Both the Sudanese military and Chad were sending reinforcements to the area, the source added.Sudans armed forces spokesman could not be reached for comment.A Salamat source confirmed that fighting occurred in southwestern Darfur on Thursday, but he said he was not sure if the Chadians were involved.Tribal violence and rebel-government battles have displaced at least 460,000 people in Sudans Darfur this year, the United Nations said on Thursday. And Defence Minister Abdelrahim Mohammed Hussein said last week that violence between the various tribes has eclipsed rebel activity as Darfurs main security threat. Two days of fighting between the Misseriya and Salamat in early November left more than 50 people dead outside Mukjar town north of Umm Dukhun, according to reports cited by the United Nations.Tribal sources say the Arab militias have used rockets, artillery and heavy machineguns.Non-Arab rebels rose up 10 years ago in Darfur, seeking an end to what they viewed as Arab elites domination of Sudans power and wealth. In response, government-backed Janjaweed militiamen shocked the world with atrocities against civilians.Analysts say the cash-starved government can no longer control its former Arab tribal allies, whom it armed against the rebellion, and violent competition for resources has intensified. In May, the Justice and Equality Movement rebels said Chads air force had targeted them in bombing along the frontier of North Darfur state. A regional expert confirmed the air strike.

Tennis: Czechs close in on successful Davis Cup defence

Posted:

BELGRADE (AFP) - The Czech Republic got within a point of defending the Davis Cup title as Tomas Berdych and Radek Stepanek beat Serbias Ilija Bozoljac and Nenad Zimonjic in Saturdays doubles in Belgrade.Berdych and Stepanek won the 14th of their 15 Davis Cup doubles rubbers together as they swept the hosts 6-2, 6-4, 7-6 (7/4) in two hours and 12 minutes to give the Czechs a 2-1 lead over 2010 champions Serbia. In Sundays reverse singles, world number two Novak Djokovic will first take on Berdych and Stepanek is due to face Dusan Lajovic, world number 117 who has replaced the injured 36th-ranked Janko Tipsarevic. But Serbia captain Bogdan Obradovic said he may call on Bozoljac for the fifth rubber. For sure Novak is going to play, but Im going to talk to the guys tonight and well make a decision about the fifth rubber, he said.Stepanek said he had no priority.I have to get ready for my rubber, for my performance, no matter whos on the other side. The good thing is we didnt waste too much energy today, he said. The Czechs dominated the doubles, being a more compact team from the start. The 28-year-old Berdych served and returned well throughout while the 34-year-old Stepanek -- the world number nine for doubles -- gave yet another spotless display at the net, delivering stunning volleys.I dare say this was maybe one of our best performances as a team, Stepanek said.Zimomjic added: They were better in every aspect of the game, a really strong team, theyve been playing together for many years and this is the reality. They were controlling the game from the beginning to the end.The two Czechs, who only play together in the Davis Cup, allowed just a single break point in the whole rubber midway through the third set.The 37-year-old Zimonjic, world number 14 for doubles, received the Davis Cup Award of Excellence before the match, but he showed only hints of his talent to the frantic home crowd.Zimonjic lost the very first serve of the rubber and when Bozoljac, who is 28, followed suit in the seventh game, the Czechs won the first set 6-2 in just 30 minutes. They took 40 minutes to win the second set -- Zimonjic kept struggling with his serve, lost his first one again and that was all the Czechs needed to win 6-4.The third set was the tightest as the Czechs cooled off a bit while the Serbian pair showed the blend of skills that took them past the Bryan brothers in the Davis Cup quarter-finals in April. Both pairs held on to their serves until a tiebreak in which the Czechs regained their dominance to win 7-6 (7/4).Today they dealt with pressure much better than we did. They won almost every important point in the match, said Bozoljac.Berdych said he was happy the team was meeting the weekend plan and that both he and Stepanek will do our best to sit here as winners.Against Djokovic, I have nothing to lose, its a huge challenge for me to play him in front of his home crowd. Im in the best possible position after Saturday, Berdych said.On Friday, Djokovic, the world number two and recently-crowned ATP World Tour Finals champion, beat Stepanek, 7-5, 6-1, 6-4.Seventh-ranked Berdych then put the Czechs level with a three-set win over Lajovic -- 6-3, 6-4, 6-3 -- on the hardcourt at the sold-out Belgrade Arena which sits more than 15,000 people.Besides Tipsarevic, Serbia are missing 76th-ranked Viktor Troicki, out over a doping ban.Playing their third final in five years, the Czechs in turn have an interim captain for this tie as Vladimir Safarik replaced Jaroslav Navratil who was hospitalised with a pulmonary embolism.

Vettel grabs pole position for US Grand Prix

Posted:

AUSTIN (AFP) - A supreme Sebastian Vettel produced a dramatic last-gasp surge in the dying seconds to snatch pole position as Red Bull swept the front row of the grid for Sundays United States Grand Prix.In a tense qualifying session run in windy conditions on Saturday, the 26-year-old German clocked a best lap of one minute and 36.338 seconds to outpace nearest rival and team-mate, Australian Mark Webber by 0.103 seconds. It was the eighth pole of the season for the newly crowned four-times world champion and the 44th of his career as he seeks to deliver a record eighth consecutive victory in Sundays race at the Circuit of the Americas. It was the fifth time this year that Red Bull had locked out the front row of the grid and a perfect 40th birthday present for team boss Christian Horner. It was a tricky session as the wind picked up quite a lot from this morning, said Vettel. Its not that easy round the high-speed corners.I was not happy with my first run, but I think I had a solid run at the end which was enough to put the car on pole.It was a good battle with Mark, he has got closer and closer as the weekend has gone on.Webber, who retires from Formula One at the end of the season, said:Sometimes youre happy, but today I let pole slip through my fingers. Well done to Seb. He put three sectors together and I put two-and-a-half together. Its not satisfying when you do that.Romain Grosjean was third fastest for the Lotus team ahead of Nico Hulkenberg of Sauber and last years winner, Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes.Fernando Alonso was sixth for Ferrari and Mexican Sergio Perez seventh for McLaren ahead of two Finns, Heikki Kovalainen for Lotus and Valtteri Bottas of Williams with another Mexican Esteban Gutierrez taking 10th in the second Sauber.Kovalainen shone again as he did on Friday after stepping in as a late replacement for fellow-Finn Ferrari-bound Kimi Raikkonen, who has undergone back surgery and will not race again this season. On a warm afternoon with track temperatures hovering around 30 degrees Celsius, Bottas topped the times in Q1, proving that Williams have found some late season pace, but team-mate Pastor Maldonado was one of the men eliminated. Also out went the two Marussia drivers, Max Chilton and Jules Bianchi in 22nd and 20th positions, sandwiching Charles Pic of Caterham. His team-mate Geido Van Der Garde was 19th one place down from Venezuelan Maldonado with Adrian Sutil also eliminated in his Force India after winding up 17th.Sutils impatience was revealed in a stream of frustration, but he was not alone as both Ferrari drivers only just escaped the first cut with Alonso 15th and Massa 16th in the unpredictable and blustery conditions. An angry Maldonado, in acrimonious mood, said he had no idea why his performance was so different to his team-mates.I dont know and I dont care to be honest, said the departing Williams man. I am focusing on next season. Its over. The conditions caused more problems in Q2 with Daniel Ricciardo failing to make the cut in his Toro Rosso, in 11th place, ahead of Paul Di Resta of Force India and disappointed compatriot Jenson Button of McLaren.Nico Rosberg, out of sorts in the changed conditions, was down in 14th for Mercedes and he was eliminated along with Massa and Jean-Eric Vergne in the second Toro Rosso.Vettel, as expected, topped Q2 and continued his imperious form, but it was the response and speed of Alonso, Bottas and Kovalainen that caught the eye as they made it into the top ten shootout.Perez also went through, his progress demonstrating the difference in attitude between his more cavalier approach and Buttons need for balance and precision.

Bolt, Fraser-Pryce are IAAF athletes of the year

Posted:

MONACO (AP) - Jamaican sprinters Usain Bolt and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce were chosen world athletes of the year on Saturday amid increasing scrutiny into the efficiency of their countrys anti-doping program.Bolt received the IAAF award for the fifth time. He won the 100, 200 and 4x100-meter relay at the world championships in Moscow last month. He won the same three races at the 2008 and 2012 Olympics and 2009 worlds. Its always an honor to be recognized by the IAAF and the fans as the athlete of the year, Bolt said. I just focus on doing great things, and staying focused is hard to do.Bolt finished ahead of world 5,000 and 10,000 champ Mo Farah of Britain and world high jump champ Bohdan Bondarenko of Ukraine.Fraser-Pryce earned the award for the first time by regaining the 100 title at the worlds and anchoring the victorious 4x100 womens relay. She also had the years best 200 time. The other womens nominees were world champion shot-putter Valerie Adams of New Zealand, and world hurdles champion Zuzana Hejnova of the Czech Republic.Im shocked and excited. Its something that has been a dream of mine, said Fraser-Pryce, who is the second Jamaican woman to win after Merlene Ottey in 1990. Hard work is something that comes without saying for us to achieve the things we want. Both winners also received $100,000.Jamaicas anti-doping program was audited by the World Anti-Doping Agency after a former Jamaica director alleged it didnt drug-test its athletes for entire months before they dazzled at the London Games. The ex-director, Renee Anne Shirley, indicated a near-complete breakdown in the agencys out-of-competition testing from January 2012 to the Olympics. Before the Herculis meeting in July, Fraser-Pryce walked out of news conference in Monaco after doping questions following positive doping tests by American sprinter Tyson Gay and Jamaicas Asafa Powell.Powell, the former 100 world record-holder, and compatriot Sherone Simpson, a three-time Olympic medalist, tested positive for a banned stimulant at the Jamaican championships. Three-time Olympic gold medalist Veronica Campbell-Brown of Jamaica tested positive for a banned diuretic in May.

Stenson keeps 1-shot lead after 3rd round in Dubai

Posted:

DUBAI (AP) - Henrik Stenson birdied four of his last five holes for a 5-under 67 Saturday to maintain a one-shot lead after the third round of the season-ending World Tour Championship and close in on the European money title. The Swede struggled earlier in the round, allowing Victor Dubuisson of France to catch up to him, but made three straight birdies from the 14th hole and then sank a tap-in birdie on the last for a 17-under total of 199.Dubuisson is coming off his first European Tour victory at the Turkish Airlines Open and shot a 64 to sit alone in second place.Englands Ian Poulter (66) and Spains Alejandro Canizares (70) shared third place, another three shots back.Stenson is trying to become the first player to win the FedEx Cup and European money title in the same year. He came into the tournament leading the Race of Dubai, although Poulter is among the players who can still overtake him. So is Justin Rose, who was six shots back after a 68.Theres no point in getting ahead of myself as theres still one more day to go and I have to give it my best, Stenson said. Victor is playing incredible golf at the moment. I heard the expression that I was the hottest golfer in the world, but hes just jumped up and grabbed that title these last two weeks. So Im just going to go out there and try to play another solid round.Dubuisson had waited 72 tournaments for his first tour victory and now the Cannes-born Frenchman is in position for a second.I play very well now because Ive been practicing a lot, but my energy levels are down and its been difficult on a few holes today, especially near the end of my round, Dubuisson said. But I will do my best tomorrow and tonight I will try to get to sleep early to have a good night and feel good for tomorrow.Rose was in a similar situation last year, trailing by six shots after the third round, and came out to post a final-day 62 only to lose to Rory McIlroy, who birdied his closing five holes to deny the Englishman.Poulter, who is fourth on the Race to Dubai, needs to win the final event of the season and for Stenson to finish outside the top three.I just need to beat Henrik, and while theres a couple of others on the board, I think if I shoot 65, its going to be a good score, Poulter said. I caught Hernik at one stage today and Ill catch him again tomorrow, dont worry about that.
