Iran, world powers fail to clinch deal at nuclear talks

Posted:

GENEVA (AFP) - Iran and world powers have failed to clinch a deal on Tehrans disputed nuclear programme despite intensive negotiations but will meet again on November 20 for fresh talks, officials said Sunday. The meetings in Geneva have made it possible to move forward, but we have not yet managed to conclude (a deal), because there are still some questions remaining to be dealt with, French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said after talks broke up.EU diplomatic chief Catherine Ashton said there had been three days of intense and constructive discussions but that Tehran and the P51 group of world powers would have to meet again.A lot of concrete progress has been achieved but some issues remain, she said, adding: Our objective is to reach a conclusion and thats what well come back to try to do.Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said he was not discouraged despite the failure of the talks.Im not disappointed at all because the meeting we just had, very long, running after midnight, was a good meeting, Zarif said. We are working together and hopefully we will be able to reach an agreement when we meet again.Fabius insisted France wanted an agreement, despite claims from some officials that Paris had stymied efforts to reach a deal.France wanted from the start to reach a deal on this important Iranian nuclear question, he said, adding of the next meeting: We hope at that time to be able to conclude an agreement.Tehran and the six world powers had gathered in Geneva for talks that had raised hopes of finally reaching a deal in the decade-old standoff over Irans nuclear ambitions. After stretching into a third day on Saturday, talks had continued into the early hours of Sunday, with Zarif joining ministers from the six powers for a last-ditch effort.A source close to Fabius said the two sides had moved forward, but not enough. There has been progress but there is still work to be done to reach an agreement, the source said. The US, British, French, German and Russian foreign ministers had rushed to Geneva to join the talks amid hopes of a breakthrough. The P51 group includes the five permanent members of the UN Security Council -- Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States -- plus Germany. The purported deal on the table could have seen Iran freeze parts of its nuclear programme in exchange for the easing of some of the sanctions that have battered its economy. The world powers in the talks suspect Irans programme is aimed at developing nuclear weapons, despite Tehrans repeated denials.

1,200 feared dead in typhoon-devastated Philippines

Posted:

TACLOBAN (AFP) - One of the most powerful typhoons in history is believed to have killed 1,200 people in the Philippines, the Red Cross said Saturday, as rescue workers raced to reach towns devastated by tsunami-like waves.A day after Super Typhoon Haiyan whipped across the central Philippines with maximum sustained winds of around 315 kilometres (195 miles) an hour, a cataclysmic picture emerged of entire communities having been flattened.Authorities said that, aside from the ferocious winds, storm surges of up to three metres (10 feet) high that swept into coastal towns and deep inland were responsible for destroying countless homes.Imagine a strip one kilometre deep inland from the shore, and all the shanties, everything, destroyed, Interior Secretary Mar Roxas said after visiting coastal towns in Leyte, one of the worst-hit provinces in the east of the archipelago. They were just like matchsticks flung inland. The official government death toll on Saturday night was 138.But with rescue workers yet to reach or communicate with many ravaged communities across a 600-kilometre stretch of islands, authorities said they were unable to give a proper assessment of how many people had been killed.Philippine Red Cross secretary general Gwendolyn Pang said her organisation estimated 1,200 people had died, while a UN official who visited Leyte described apocalyptic scenes. This is destruction on a massive scale. There are cars thrown like tumbleweed and the streets are strewn with debris, said Sebastian Rhodes Stampa, the head of a UN disaster assessment coordination team. The last time I saw something of this scale was in the aftermath of the Indian Ocean tsunami, he said, referring to the 2004 disaster that claimed about 220,000 lives.Stampa made his comments after arriving in Tacloban, the destroyed capital of Leyte with a population of about 220,000 people.More than 100 bodies were littered in and around Taclobans airport, according to the facilitys manager.AFP journalists who arrived in Tacloban on a military aircraft encountered dazed survivors wandering amid the carnage asking for water, while others sorted through what was left of their destroyed homes. One resident, Dominador Gullena, cried as he recounted to AFP his escape but the loss of his neighbours. My family evacuated the house. I thought our neighbours also did the same, but they didnt, Gullena said.Eight bodies had been laid to rest inside Tacloban airports chapel, which had also been badly damaged, according to an AFP photographer. One woman knelt on the flood-soaked floor of the church while holding the hand of a dead boy, who had been placed on a wooden pew.Energy Secretary Jericho Petilla reached the fishing town of Palo, about 10 kilometres from Tacloban, by helicopter and said he believed hundreds of people had died just in that area.Pope Francis tweeted his support for the typhoon victims: I ask all of you to join me in prayer for the victims of Typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda especially those in the beloved islands of the Philippines.Race to reach decimated communities

Federer reaches semis at ATP finals

Posted:

LONDON (AP) - Roger Federer isnt the master of the game anymore but he can still deliver when things matter. On the back of a poor season, the 17-time Grand Slam winner showed that his winner instinct remained intact as he came back from 3-0 down in the third set to defeat Juan Martin del Potro 4-6, 7-6 (2), 7-5 and reach the semifinals of the ATP World Tour Finals for an 11th time on Saturday.More important than this impressive statistic, he has the chance to prove that despite his aging legs, aching back and recent lack of consistency he can still beat his rival Rafael Nadal, his semifinal opponent.I just have to have the right mindset to give it one last go, maybe play with a little less pressure than I have in previous matches with him, Federer said. I just feel like I need to look at it more as being an underdog a little bit because of circumstances, because of my year, because of his year.Maybe that free swinging is what I kind of need to do a little bit more tomorrow.Federer has endured a tough year and the elite event is his last chance to win a big title in 2013. Federer has just four victories against top-10 opponents in 2013 and has not beaten Nadal since 2012. The top-ranked Spaniard leads 21-10 in their head-to-head record, but Federer is 4-0 on indoor hard courts, having secured all four wins at the ATP Finals.Nadal, who returned to tennis in February following a seven-month layoff due to a knee injury, clinched the year-end No. 1 spot this week in a season in which he won the French Open and the U.S. Open. In London, the Spaniard qualified from his group unbeaten. We know each other that well. Hes going to do exactly what he needs to do, Im going to try to do what I need to do, Federer said. Hopefully its going to match up good for me. If not, he deserves it. Hes had a wonderful season.Novak Djokovic, playing Richard Gasquet late Saturday in his final round-robin match, will take on debutant Stanislas Wawrinka in Sundays other semifinal.Federer won only the grass-court event at Halle, Germany, in June. He regularly lost to unseeded opponents and secured his qualification for the Finals at the last minute. The goal is always to win every tournament. But I think I had to be slightly more realistic in recent weeks and months, Federer said. I knew that sometimes just getting a few rounds into the bag was positive. Both Federer and del Potro needed a win to progress from Group B and treated the crowd to a tense and entertaining back-and-forth match. Federer trailed in all three sets.Only once in 12 appearances has Federer failed to advance to the last four at the season-ending tournament for the top eight players. He struggled to return del Potros big serve in the first set and committed seven forehand mistakes as his rival opened up a 5-1 lead.Capitalizing on more Federer errors, del Potro broke again in the third game of the second set. The Argentine looked set for an easy win but failed to build on the momentum, double-faulting as Federer leveled at 3-3.Federer then gradually took the upper hand with a brilliant display at the net and played a nearly prefect tiebreaker as del Potro crumbled. Federer clinched the set with an ace.But Federer again started sluggishly in the decider, allowing del Potro to break as he hit two consecutive weak forehands. But the blip was temporary and, once again, his rival could not take advantage of his inconsistency. At 3-1, del Potro saved a break point but fluffed a forehand on the second one, bringing Federer back into the match.Hitting more confidently towards the end, Federer broke to go up 6-5 and saved a break point in the next game before closing out the match with his 10th ace.I think I got two chances to win the match, del Potro said. But in the end you have to be focused and to find the winners. I made the mistakes, and he was there really focused to take the chance. The mark of the champions.

Chelsea draws as Liverpool, Southampton win big

Posted:

LONDON (AP) - Chelsea took until the sixth minute of stoppage time to salvage a draw against West Bromwich Albion, while Liverpool and Southampton turned on the style with four-goal wins in the English Premier League on Saturday.Luis Suarezs double powered Liverpool to a 4-0 victory over Fulham, and Southampton easily overcame Hull 4-1 to continue the south coast clubs impressive start to the season.Liverpool and Southampton sent Chelsea down to fourth place as the west London club was held to 2-2 at home.Goals from Shane Long and Stephane Sessegnon put West Brom on course for a first win at Chelsea in 35 years until Steven Reid was penalized for fouling Ramires in the fourth minute of stoppage time and Eden Hazard equalized from the penalty spot.Arsenal will finish the weekend top of the standings regardless of whether the north London club can win at Manchester United on Sunday, given its two-point lead over Liverpool.Chelsea is four points behind the front-runners, although it could have been worse for Jose Mourinho. The Portuguese managers 65-game unbeaten league home record at Chelsea was looking under threat until referee Andre Marriner pointed to the spot in stoppage time.Chelsea had gone in front through a moment of good fortune.Hazard cut in from the left and saw his shot parried by Boaz Myhill. West Brom defender Liam Ridgewell then dithered and remained static, leaving Samuel Etoo to score his third goal of the week. The second half began brightly for West Brom, with Long heading against the outside of the post and then finding the target on the hour. From Morgan Amalfitanos corner, Gareth McAuleys powerful header was pushed high into the air by Cech. As the ball came back down, Long rose to head it in.Eight minutes later, West Brom was in front as Ridgewell made up for the blunder that allowed Chelsea to go in front. After breaking down the left flank, Ridgewell fed Sessegnon, whose shot easily beat Cech.In front, but never comfortable, West Brom had to soak up sustained Chelsea pressure to protect the lead. Our reaction could be die or fight for life, Mourinho said. And our team fought for life.Fortune favored Chelsea with the late penalty won by Ramires. He started going down early, he started going down before the contact, said West Brom manager Steve Clarke, Mourinhos assistant at Chelsea during his first stint in charge from 2004-07.At Anfield, Fulham gifted Liverpool the lead when Fernando Amorebieta headed the ball inadvertently into his own goal in the 23rd minute after Steven Gerrard sent a free kick into the penalty area.Three minutes later there was another goal, from another header this time from a Liverpool player as defender Martin Skrtel met Gerrards corner.Suarez, who initially thought he diverted Amorebietas header into the goal, then did get on the scoresheet by slotting home in the 36th.The Uruguay striker took his tally to eight goals in six league matches since returning from a 10-game biting ban by wrapping up the win in the 54th after Gerrard turned provider again.Southampton is just a point behind Liverpool.Morgan Schneiderlin headed Southampton in front after 16 minutes against Hull after being set up by Adam Lallana, who then won a penalty after being brought down by goalkeeper Steve Harper.Rickie Lambert converted from the spot on the half hour, before Lallana scored a goal of his own seven minutes later, a fine solo effort after jinking through the defense.Yannick Sagbo pulled one back for Hull from distance early in the second half but Steven Davis completed the comfortable Southampton win in the 88th after meeting Nathaniel Clynes cross. At Villa Park, Aston Vilas four-game scoring drought ended when Leandro Bacuna and Libor Kozak clinched a 2-0 win over Cardiff. There were no goals, though, at Selhurst Park as bottom-place Crystal Palace held fifth-place Everton to end a seven-match losing run. Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard started despite hitting his head before the game when he walked into the wing mirror of the team bus.Norwich staged a second-half comeback to beat West Ham 3-1 and ease the immediate pressure on manager Chris Hughton. Norwich was booed off by its fans at halfltime at 1-0 down but was a much more cohesive unit after the break.

Ronaldo nets 3 in Real's 5-1 romp over Sociedad

Posted:

BARCELONA (AP) - Cristiano Ronaldo netted another hat trick in Real Madrids 5-1 win over Real Sociedad on Saturday, as the Portugal forward extended his scoring run to nine goals in his last four games.Ronaldos latest bundle of goals took him three past Atletico Madrids Diego Costa as the leading scorer in the Spanish league with 16 through 13 rounds. Ronaldo also tops the Champions League with eight goals.(Ronaldo) is playing on another level, Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti said. He scores with such incredible ease. Its tough to find words to describe him.Madrids win pulled it to within two points of Atletico and three points behind league leader Barcelona before they have matches on Sunday.Ronaldo opened the scoring, adding another goal from the penalty spot and a third with a well-placed free kick. Karim Benzema also kept up his good form by scoring while Gareth Bale set up Sami Khedira for a goal.Ronaldo has eight multi-goal performances, including three hat tricks, in 17 matches for Madrid this season. He will hope to keep his streak going when Portugal plays Sweden in a two-leg playoff on Nov. 15 and 19 with only the winner qualifying for the 2014 World Cup.It will be a very important tie for us, Ronaldo said. We want to be in the World Cup and we will try our hardest to get there.Elsewhere, Athletic Bilbao rallied past Levante 2-1 to provisionally move even on points with Villarreal in fourth place.Elche, meanwhile, earned a 1-1 draw at Getafe to remain unbeaten in its last four away matches.Rayo Vallecano is at Celta Vigo later.Sociedad never stood a chance at the Santiago Bernabeu against a Madrid side that kept its attack firing away for a fourth straight game while finally shoring up a defense that had become penalty prone with five whistled against it in the previous three games.Ancelotti promised on Friday that his team would win over the demanding Bernabeu crowd by improving its style of play. A day later, the Italian manager called his teams first half perfect.Tough to argue with that.Ronaldo lashed a shot off the top of the crossbar in the eighth minute in a warning of what was to come.He then made sure not to miss in the 12th when Benzema spotted him switched to the right side of the attack with a floated pass that Ronaldo batted down and blasted by Sociedad goalkeeper Claudio Bravo.Ronaldo returned the favor four minutes later by dribbling down the left flank and squaring for Benzema to volley in his fourth goal in as many games.A stunned Sociedad helped concede the third goal when Ronaldos low shot hit Markel Bergaras arm inside the area. Instead of drilling his spot kick, Ronaldo lured Bravo into diving to one side while he gently placed the ball down the middle.Too many times we were just looking on, said Antoine Griezmann, who scored Sociedads consolation goal.Bale missed a chance to take part in the rout by hitting the sidenetting, but he made up for his miss by finding Khedira alone on the edge of the box for the midfielders first goal of the campaign in the 36th.Sociedad hadnt threatened the hosts area until the 61st when Griezmann ran on to a pass awkwardly headed back by Madrid defender Pepe that he skillfully chipped over goalie Diego Lopez. That gave Griezmann eight goals in the league, drawing the Sociedad forward level with Barcelonas Lionel Messi for the leagues third-leading scorer. The victory was secure but Ronaldo wasnt done and curled a free kick over the barrier in the 76th, as a flat-footed Bravo was turned into a bystander.

Marquez takes pole for decisive Valencia GP

Posted:

VALENCIA, Spain (AP) - MotoGP points leader Marc Marquez will start ahead of defending champion Jorge Lorenzo in the decisive Valencia Grand Prix after he won pole position in Saturdays qualifying session.Marquez pushed his Honda through a flying lap in 1 minute, 30.237 seconds on the 4-kilometer (2.48 mile) Cheste Circuit to set a track record and make sure Lorenzo will start Sundays season finale from second place on the grid.Marquez leads Lorenzo by 13 points entering the 18th and final race of the season. The 20-year-old Marquez needs a top-four finish to become the first rookie to win the championship since American Kenny Roberts in 1978.Marquez had a wobble near the end of the session, and he said he took that as a sign of what could happen Sunday if he lets his guard down.I had a small scare on the last lap when I was a little relaxed and it made me see that I cant lose my concentration tomorrow, Marquez said. Jorge has a little more speed right now, but we will stay focused on our race.Lorenzo made a good start with a blistering first lap. But he returned to the paddock with four minutes left to change to another Yamaha, throwing his arm up in frustration as he got off his first bike.I was feeling confident going out with soft tires, but suddenly the bike stopped working well and lost half its power, Lorenzo said.Lorenzo would defend the title if he wins the race and Marquez finishes fifth or worse. Its very tough with 13 points. Theyre a lot, said Lorenzo. Seeing Marc finish fifth or sixth or worse is difficult to imagine, but anything can happen so we have to be ready.Marquezs teammate Dani Pedrosa will start from third, followed by Lorenzos partner Valentino Rossi in fourth ahead of British pair Cal Crutchlow and Bradley Smith.Spanish riders can sweep all three categories at the track which has reportedly sold out its 100,000 seats for the highly anticipated race.In Moto3, Alex Rins took pole position for Sundays race when he will duel with fellow Spaniards Luis Salom and Marc Vinales for the title.Salom leads the Moto3 standings with 300 points. Vinales has 298, and Rins has 295.Im very calm and satisfied with the work of my team this season, Rins said. Lets see if my nerves dont betray me tomorrow. In Moto2, newly crowned champion Pol Espargaro took pole ahead of Simone Corsi and Jordi Torres.

Adam Scott holds 3rd-round lead at Australian PGA

Posted:

GOLD COAST (AP) - Adam Scott shot an even-par 71 on Saturday and extended his lead to three strokes at the Australian PGA going into Sundays final round at a wind-swept Royal Pines.Scott, playing the first of four consecutive tournaments in Australia and for the first time since his U.S. Masters triumph in April, had a three-round total of 10-under 203. He led by two shots after the second round.Hell play in Sundays final group with American Rickie Fowler, who also shot 71 and was tied for second with Australian David McKenzie, who shot 72.Australian Marc Leishman shot 68 and was in a group of five tied for sixth, five strokes behind Scott. It was a grind for everyone, Scott said. I didnt see too many good scores out there. He bogeyed the par-4 seventh and eighth holes before making birdie on the par-5 12th and 15th holes.I just tried to play a little better on the back nine, and took advantage of the par-5s, he said.Later in the day when the wind picks up, its a bit of a luck of the draw coming into the greens low and at slow speed. He felt fortunate to increase his lead in such tough conditions.Ive improved my spot just slightly, Scott said. I would have taken that score at this stage of the tournament.Fowler was wayward with some of his tee shots, which cost him when it came to birdie opportunities on the greens.Tomorrow, Id like to play on the fairways a little bit more, he said. I havent been able to get the balls as close as Id like.If the breeze stays up, it will be tough. The fairways arent too generous. But Im looking forward to play with Adam, hes a great guy and fun to play with.
