US killed Hakimullah to spoil peace process

Posted:

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insad (PTI) chief Imran Khan accused the United States of deliberately destroying any chance of meaningful peace talks with the Pakistani Taliban by killing the Hakimullah Mehsud in a drone strike a week ago.Imran said that the Americans basically could have taken out Hakimullah whenever they wanted. I think the timing was to sabotage the peace process. The Americans think that if there is fighting going on here ...in our tribal belt, there is less chance of insurgents going over to the other side (Afghanistan) to fight the Americans at a time when they are withdrawing, Imran said.Imran Khan was of the view that US drone strikes in North Waziristan have only fuelled anti-American sentiment in the region.

Iran nuclear talks to stretch into third day

Posted:

GENEVA (AFP) - Talks between Iran and world powers were to stretch into a third day on Saturday as top diplomats pressed for a deal on Tehrans nuclear programme, warning that major obstacles remain. After cutting short a Middle East tour to attend the talks, US Secretary of State John Kerry struck a note of caution as he joined his British, French and German counterparts who converged on Geneva on Friday. There is not an agreement at this point, Kerry told reporters. There are still some very important issues on the table that are unresolved. But hopes were rising for a deal, especially as Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov was expected to arrive in Geneva on Saturday.Lavrovs arrival would bring together the foreign ministers of all but one of the six world powers that have been negotiating for a decade with Iran over its nuclear programme.Kerry, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and EU chief diplomat Catherine Ashton, who has represented world powers at the talks, held a long meeting late into the night on Friday. It broke up around 11:30 pm local time (1030 GMT), with Kerry saying afterward only that it had involved a lot of work.Over the course of the evening, we continued to make progress as we worked to narrow the gaps. There is more work to do. The meetings will resume tomorrow morning, a senior State Department official said. The meeting was productive but we still have lots of work to do, Irans lead negotiator, Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi, also said after the talks, confirming the negotiations would continue on Saturday. If some sort of agreement is reached, it would be a breakthrough after a decade of negotiations between Iran and the P51 group comprising the United States, Britain, France, Germany, Russia and China. The hoped-for agreement -- seen as a first step ahead of further talks on a final deal -- could see Tehran freeze its nuclear efforts for as long as six months in exchange for some relief from the sanctions that have battered its economy.Reports say the proposed deal could see Tehran stop enriching uranium to 20 percent, which is just a few technical steps from weapons grade, reduce existing stockpiles and agree not to activate its plutonium reactor at Arak.Global powers would in exchange take limited and reversible measures to ease sanctions, such as unfreezing some Iranian funds in foreign accounts.

Bombings, shootings in Iraq kill 19 people

Posted:

BAGHDAD (AP) - A bomb exploded on a busy street filled with shoppers in northern Iraq, part of a series of attacks that killed at least 19 people Friday, officials said, the latest in a wave of violence roiling the country. The explosion struck a commercial street in Mosul, killing 12 people and wounding 30, police said.Hassan Mahmoud, the owner of an ice cream shop along the street, said he was thrown on the ground by the powerful explosion.I went outside my shop to see pieces of flesh scattered all around the place with wounded people screaming for help, Mahmoud said. The scene was horrific.Earlier Friday, a bomb exploded just after Friday prayers as Sunni worshippers left the Ali Bin Abi Talib mosque in Baghdads western Shurta district.A second bomb, planted further down the street, exploded seconds later as worshippers tried to flee from the first blast, officials said. Police said the two bombings killed five people and wounded 15.In the western city of Fallujah, a former al-Qaida stronghold 65 kilometers (40 miles) from Baghdad, gunmen opened fire on a security checkpoint, killing two police officers and wounding two, police said.Hospital officials confirmed the casualties in the latest attacks. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to reporters.Attacks on mosques, especially Sunni ones, have increased recently. While its possible that Sunni insurgents seeking to stoke sectarian hatred could be to blame for them, Shiite militias also may be behind the assaults.Fridays violence comes a day after a series of attacks across Iraq left 30 people dead, most of them soldiers who were killed when two suicide bombers drove their explosive-laden cars into a military base in the town of Tarmiyah, just north of Baghdad. Tarmiyah is also a former insurgent stronghold and home to Sunnis. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attacks of the past two days. But suicide attacks and large bombings, especially against Iraqi forces but also civilians and places such as markets, cafes and mosques are a favorite tactic of al-Qaidas local branch. The terror group has recently escalated its campaign of violence in order to thwart the Shiite-led governments efforts to maintain security.Violence spiked in Iraq since a deadly security crackdown on a Sunni protest camp in April, with the pace of killing reaching levels unseen since 2008.Fridays attacks bring the death toll across the country this month to 96, according to an Associated Press count.

22 mn kids in Mideast to get polio vaccine: UN

Posted:

GENEVA (AFP) - The UN has launched the largest-ever polio vaccination campaign in the Middle East, aiming to immunise more than 20 million children in seven countries amid an outbreak of the crippling virus in war-torn Syria, officials said on Friday. The polio outbreak in Syria is not just a tragedy for children; it is an urgent alarm -- and a crucial opportunity to reach all under-immunised children wherever they are, Peter Crowley, who heads the UN childrens agencys polio division, said in a statement. The World Health Organisation last week confirmed the polio outbreak in Syria, which had been free of the disease since 1999.The highly infectious disease affects mainly children under five and can cause paralysis in a matter of hours. Some cases can be fatal. In a region that had not seen polio for nearly a decade, in the last 12 months poliovirus has been detected in sewage samples from Egypt, Israel, the West Bank and Gaza Strip, WHO and UNICEF said in a joint statement. It has so far left 10 children paralysed, and poses a risk of paralysis to hundreds of thousands of children across the region, they stressed, pointing out that Syria has seen its immunisation rate plummet from more than 90 percent before the conflict began in March 2011 to 68 percent today. The whole region will now face an intense vaccination push over the next six months, and will be on heightened alert to spot cases that may have been missed, they said.More than 650,000 children in Syria, including 116,000 in the strife-torn northeastern Deir Ezzor province where the polio outbreak was confirmed last week, had already received emergency vaccinations, UNICEF and the WHO said.A new campaign aims to vaccinate 1.6 million children in Syria against polio, measles, mumps and rubella, while Jordan plans to immunise 3.5 million across the country, the UN agencies said, adding that some 18,800 kids had received vaccines in Jordans Zaatari refugee camp in recent days.In Iraq, a vaccination campaign has started in the west of the country, with another pending in the Kurdistan region, while Lebanon plans to launch a nationwide vaccination push this week and Turkey and Egypt by the middle of the month. Thanks to a global drive against polio, the virus is now endemic in just three countries: Afghanistan, Pakistan and Nigeria.Preliminary evidence indicates that the poliovirus is of Pakistani origin and is similar to the strain detected in Egypt, Israel, the West Bank and Gaza Strip, Fridays statement said.

Two die in Cairo clashes between Morsi backers, opponents

CAIRO (AFP) - A child and another person died Friday in clashes between supporters and opponents of Egypts ousted president in Cairo, state news agency MENA said, as Mohamed Morsis backers protested in several cities. The 12-year-old boy and a man died in Cairos southern Giza neighbourhood, MENA quoted emergency services as saying.Protesters with firearms wounded three others there before police intervened to separate the two sides, arresting arrested several people, the interior ministry said.In all, 20 people were wounded in violence around Egypt, particularly in cities in the Nile Delta, MENA reported.Security officials also told AFP that police had fired tear gas to break up protests in Cairo and Alexandria, Egypts second city.Morsis supporters have held near-daily protests since his overthrow and arrest by the military on July 3.Several thousand marched on Friday in different provinces across the country.Morsi appeared in court on Monday on the first day of his trial for inciting the murder of protesters outside the presidential palace in December 2012. It was his first public appearance since his ouster.Despite regular calls to protest, Morsis Islamist supporters have been battered by a police crackdown that has severely hit their ability to stage large-scale demonstrations.About 1,000 of them have been killed in clashes and more than 2,000 arrested.

Nadal helps Wawrinka into last four at Tour Finals

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Rafael Nadal helped Stanislas Wawrinka seal a place in the semi-finals of the ATP World Tour Finals as the world number one defeated Tomas Berdych 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 on Friday.Nadal had already qualified for the last four and his victory secured a first place finish in Group A of the prestigious season-ending event at Londons O2 Arena.Czech fifth seed Berdych could have gone through with a win, but instead he was eliminated and Swiss seventh seed Wawrinka progressed to the last four following his victory over David Ferrer earlier on Friday.Nadals semi-final opponent on Sunday will be either old rival Roger Federer or Argentine fourth seed Juan Martin del Potro, depending on the winner of Saturdays Group B clash between those two.Wawrinka, playing in the Tour Finals for the first time, will take on Group B winner Novak Djokovic in the other last four clash.Stan came to the locker room and said good luck. I said I would try my best. Its a good result for Stan. Hes good friend of mine, said Nadal.I wish Tomas a good holiday and good luck for the Davis Cup final (against Serbia). In the second set he played great and it was very difficult to stop him.I try to be intense in every moment. In the final set, I always enjoy to play these special moments. With the number one spot in the year-end world rankings wrapped up after victories in his first two Group A matches, Nadal was free to focus fully on his bid to win the Tour Finals for the first time. The 27-year-old has only made the final once, losing to Federer in 2010, but he would love to end that barren run and cap a remarkable return to action this year after seven months out with career-threatening knee tendinitis.Nadal had won his last 15 meetings with Berdych and his last defeat against the Czech came way back in 2006, so it was hardly surprising to see the Spaniard seize the initiative at the start. He had Berdych on the back foot with a series of blistering groundstrokes and converted his second break point to take the lead in the opening game of the match. While it was Berdych who was fighting for a place in the last four, Nadal still needed to win one set to clinch top spot in the group and he showed no signs of taking it easy.He held serve for the rest of the set and never gave Berdych a sniff of a chance to break back. But at the start of the second set Nadals concentration wavered and Berdych took advantage to break for a 2-0 lead.Nadal was unable to break out of his sudden slump and Berdych broke to love in the fourth game before racing through the rest of the set.It was the first time Nadal had dropped a set in the tournament, but the decider was far tighter.Nadal had recovered his equilibrium and he gradually wore down Berdych, breaking for a 5-3 lead before serving out the win.

Murray blasts 'unprofessional' Troicki, Cilic

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Wimbledon champion Andy Murray on Friday blasted Viktor Troicki and Marin Cilic as unprofessional after both were handed doping bans with the British star backing the drug testing system.Troicki is serving a 12-month ban for failing to supply a blood sample on demand at the Monte Carlo Masters in April when he claimed he was too ill.Cilic served a four-month suspension after testing for banned stimulant nikethamide at the Munich Open in May.Croatian star Cilic, who returned to action in Paris last week, said the substance was in a supplement bought by his mother from a chemist in Monte Carlo. But Murray believes there can be no excuses when it comes to trying to explain away offences.Whether either player was intentionally cheating or not -- we dont know that, and I dont think either of them are like that -- but both of them were unprofessional, Murray told the BBC.I personally would never go and buy something over the counter in a pharmacy -- its just unprofessional.I think 10 or 15 years ago, when people didnt think drug taking happened in sport, people might have thought yeah, we can just buy stuff over the counter in any old pharmacy. But we cant do that and you have to accept that.Troicki was originally banned for 18 months before his punishment was reduced this week after the Court of Arbitration for Sport decided that his fault was not significant. The 27-year-old Serb insisted that a doping control officer told him he could return the following day in Monte Carlo to take the blood test, something the officer denied. He did give a blood sample 24 hours later and it showed no irregularities. We dont know exactly what was said in the room between the doping control officer and Viktor but the reality is that there are rules and you need to stick to them, added Murray. When were asked to go and give a drugs test, we must do that.Im happy that the drug testing is going in the right direction: theyre starting to increase it, theyre doing more blood testing and weve got the biological passports in place. There almost has to be zero tolerance on that stuff because, if not, people are just going to think they can get away with anything.

Nigeria beat Mexico in U17 World Cup final

Posted:

ABU DHABI (AP) - Nigeria beat Mexico 3-0 in the Under-17 World Cup final on Friday to win the tournament for a record fourth time.Nigeria went ahead in the ninth minute through Erick Aguirres own goal before Kelechi Iheanacho doubled the lead in the 56th. Nigeria captain Musa Muhammed scored from a free kick in the 81st minute to complete the victory as the country surpassed Brazils three titles at the U17 level. In what was a rematch of Nigerias 6-1 win in the opening Group F match, Mexico had the better chances early. Alejandro Diazs close-range effort was just wide of the target and minutes later Nigeria goalkeeper Dele Alampasu tipped Ivan Ochoas header over the bar. However, Nigeria then went on a counterattack and Musa Yahahas shot deflected off Aguirre and past Mexico goalkeeper Raul Gudino. The remainder of the opening half was played at a frenetic pace and saw both sides squander opportunities. Alampasu made another good save in the 30th minute from Ulises Jaimes header after a lovely ball from Mexico captain Ulises Rivas. For Nigeria, Awoniyis strike hit the side of the net in the 37th minute, while Yahahas long-range effort struck the crossbar just before halftime. Both teams threatened in the opening stages of the second half, and Nigeria doubled its lead when Iheanacho took advantage of Gudinos poor attempt to clear the ball.Mexico continued to attack and could have scored when Aguirre found Ochoa in space. But his header from right in front of goal was wide of the target. The West Africans sealed the victory when Muhammed curled a free kick from the edge of the penalty box over the wall and past the outstretched arms of Gudino in the 81st minute.Earlier, Sweden clinched third place after beating Argentina 4-1, thanks to Valmir Berishas hat trick. Carlos Strandberg also scored for Sweden, while Lucio Campagnucci found the net for Argentina.Theres a lot of feelings right now, Sweden coach Roland Larsson said. This is my last game with this team, so this is the perfect present for me.This is a sensation for Swedish football; no one would believe we could do this.Iheanacho was crowned Golden Ball winner for best player, while Swedens Berisha earned the Golden Shoe award for most goals with seven.

Woods shoots 63 to trail Turkish Open leaders by 1

Posted:

BELEK (AP) - Tiger Woods slashed his deficit to the leaders from six shots to one with a 9-under 63 in the second round of the Turkish Open on Friday.Woods completed seven holes of his first round in the morning for a 70, and after an hours lunch break the 14-time major winner didnt drop a shot in posting nine birdies, including three in succession from the second and in his two closing holes. It left Woods, who last won on the European Tour at the co-sanctioned 2009 Australian Masters, in fifth place on 11 under but just a shot behind the leading foursome of Swedens Henrik Stenson (68), Englands Ian Poulter (66), Frenchman Victor Dubuisson (65) and South African Justin Walters (66).I played a little better certainly this afternoon and made some putts, so that was fine, Woods said.It was a round that could have been really special but I am right there and I am only one back. Its a bunched leaderboard so we are going to have to continue to go low over the weekend given the way the golf course is playing and how soft it is, as it is so receptive and slow and it lends itself to a lot of birdies.I must have missed about four or five putts inside 10 feet for birdie.Woods revealed he had been awake since around 3:30 a.m. local time watching TV coverage of Stanford, his alma mater, beating Oregon 26-20 in college football. The game went on so long that Woods became worried about getting in some practice at Maxx Royal before his 8 a.m. restart.Unfortunately, I had to stay longer watching the game than I wanted to, he said. Kickoff was 3:30 a.m. but that was no problem as my body is still on Singapore time, but it was one of those games where it looked like we (Stanford) were going up 29-7 but the next thing you know, Oregon comes back at us and Im thinking I have to go warm up for this tournament. So Im saying, come on guys, cant you just run the clock out, and they finally did.Stenson, the European Tour money leader, stalled with nine straight pars before picking up four birdies over his inward nine. He and Poulter, fourth on the money list, have a side bet going on who will finish on top in the season-ending World Tour Championship in Dubai next week. The winner will also have to serve the loser drinks at a restaurant of the winners choosing.Ive spotted him a few times on the golf course this week and, every time, he gets a towel out and puts it over his arm and points at me as if I was a drinks waiter, Poulter said.So given I am now sharing the lead with him I would have to think the odds are looking brighter on my side, and hopefully they continue to get better.

Motorcycling: Marquez tops season-closing Valencia practice

Posted:

VALENCIA (AFP) - Championship leader Marc Marquez, who is bidding to become motorcyclings youngest champion, topped the times in Fridays practice for this weekends season-closing Valencia MotoGP.The Honda rookie holds a 13-point lead over his fellow Spaniard, Yamahas defending champion Jorge Lorenzo.Marquez topped the time sheets after the two sessions with a best lap of 1min 31.220sec, followed by teammate Dani Pedrosa (at 0.066sec)and Lorenzo (0.158sec).We have a new surface but there wasnt much grip, said Marquez, who won the Moto2 title on the same circuit last year. The track is nice, without many bumps but even so my feeling with the bike was quite good. We still need to make some improvements as Im not 100% happy, but were going in the right way.Marquez knows that a podium finish, or even coming home fourth on Sunday, would make him the youngest premier class champion of all time.It was good to start the most important week of the season and with a good feeling, added the 20-year-old.We still need to improve our setup but we were fastest today -- which is the key thing ahead of Sundays race. Tomorrow we will continue in the same way but try to improve and take another step forward because I am sure that the rest of the riders will do so.Lorenzo added: This afternoon was very windy so it was very difficult to make the same lap time of the morning but we managed to improve it a little bit.We adjusted the bike a little electronically and also the suspension. We are quite close to everyone and ready to keep working tomorrow.Marquez is still favourite to make history on Sunday but he has seen his lead whittled down by Lorenzos late charge in recent weeks.

Oil prices rise on upbeat US jobs report, Iran concerns

Posted:

NEW YORK CITY (AFP) - Oil prices rose Friday after a stronger-than-expected US jobs growth report and as investors kept an eye on talks for a deal on Iran's disputed nuclear program.New York's main contract, West Texas Intermediate (WTI) for delivery in December delivery, finished the session at $94.60 a barrel, an increase of 40 cents from Thursday's close. In London trade, the European benchmark, Brent North Sea crude for December, jumped $1.66 to settle at $105.12 a barrel. The US Labor Department's highly anticipated October jobs report showed the world's largest economy added a surprising 204,000 jobs, more than double the average analyst estimate, despite a 16-day partial federal government shutdown. The US employment report for October was stronger than expected, triggering a supportive rally in the S&P 500, but also a stronger dollar that tended to limit gains in oil prices, said Tim Evans of Citi Futures.A stronger dollar makes dollar-priced oil more expensive for buyers using weaker currencies, tending to curb demand for crude. But behind the solid October jobs number, the details of the report showed areas of weakness, leaving a murky picture on the health of the economy. The data came a day after the US government estimated third-quarter economic growth at the annual rate of 2.8 percent, again with the surprisingly strong headline number masking worrying details. Both the growth and jobs reports stirred speculation that the US Federal Reserve may begin to reduce its monetary stimulus sooner than expected, with some analysts pointing to the Fed meeting in December. The employment data keeps investors on the same see-saw they have been on for some time, with stronger data generating a mix of optimism that the economy is strengthening and worry that the Fed will begin tapering sooner rather than later, Evans said.Meanwhile, top diplomats held talks in Geneva amid rising hopes for a long-sought deal on oil producer Iran's nuclear program, which the US and allies say is a cover for nuclear weapons production, a claim Tehran denies. The agreement could see Tehran freeze its nuclear efforts in exchange for some relief from the sanctions that have battered its economy.Earlier today it looked as if we might see a preliminary agreement with Iran, that suggested a fuller agreement would be possible, said Michael Lynch of Strategic Energy and Economic Research. It seems we are not there yet, he said.

Dollar muscles higher on strong US jobs report

Posted:

NEW YORK CITY (AFP) - The dollar scored solid gains against the euro after a surprisingly strong jobs growth report stirred expectations the Federal Reserve could begin to reduce its huge monetary stimulus soon. The euro fell to $1.3368 around 2200 GMT, down from $1.3414 at the same time Thursday. The dollar jumped to 99.04 yen from 98.02 yen. The euro also was stronger against the Japanese currency, rising to 132.40 yen from 131.50 yen.Investors bought dollars aggressively on the back of the payrolls report, said Kathy Lien of BK Asset Management. The Labor Department said the US economy added 204,000 jobs in October, double what analysts forecast, and revisions to the previous two months added another 60,000 jobsThe upbeat jobs growth, despite a 16-day partial federal government shutdown, suggested the world's largest economy could be in better shape than previously believed, and could encourage the Federal Reserve to decide to reduce its asset-purchase program, or quantitative easing (QE), by the end of the year.Markets are taking the news as a sign that the Federal Reserve will begin to taper QE3 sooner than later -- perhaps December given labor conditions bucking expectations, said Christopher Vecchio, a currency analyst at DailyFX.For Lien, the jobs report extended a string of positive economic surprises that could give Fed policymakers the confidence to reduce stimulus before March. The bottom line is that if the government shutdown did not happen, the unemployment rate could be at 7.0 percent and with the anticipated snapback in government jobs in November, labor market conditions are strong enough for December tapering to be a serious option for the Fed, she said. The euro's sharp fall against the greenback came amid mixed eurozone data and the downgrade of France's credit by ratings firm S&P to AA from AA. Adding to the pressure was the European Central Bank's interest rate cut Thursday, taking its key rate to a new all-time low of 0.25 percent after holding it unchanged at 0.5 percent since May.The pound fell to $1.6019 from $1.6075 Thursday, while the dollar also rose against the Swiss currency, to 0.9216 franc from 0.9159 franc.

Pakistan seek more cricket cooperation with SA

Posted:

ABU DHABI (AFP) - Pakistan and South African cricket officials Friday agreed on more cricketing cooperation after deciding on a short limited over series later this month.Pakistan will tour South Africa for a short tour with three one-day and two Twenty20 matches to fill the gap that was created by a shortened India tour to the Proteas in December.India were initially due to play three Tests, seven one-days and two Twenty20 matches but the tour was shortened to two Tests and three one-days, allowing South Africa to invite Pakistan.Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) interim chairman Najam Sethi and Cricket South Africa (CSA) chief executive Haroon Lorgat signed a Memorandum of Understanding for the short trip on the sidelines of one-day series between the two nations in Abu Dhabi.Sethi said South Africa will allow Pakistani players to feature in their domestic cricket. Our players will play in South African domestic cricket and that will give them more cricket. I have talked to Lorgat and he has promised me to encourage our players to play in their local leagues, Sethi told reporters.Sethi said Pakistani players, unable to play at home due to security concerns since terrorist attacks on the Sri Lankan team in 2009, will learn by playing in South Africa. If South Africa let our players in the local leagues then it will give them good outing and good education, said Sethi, hoping India will also allow Pakistani players to feature in the lucrative Indian Premier League (IPL).My concern is that our players should play in India in the IPL and I will talk (about that) when I meet (the) Indian cricket board chief next week, said Sethi.Pakistani players featured in the inaugural IPL in 2008 but were then barred from it in the wake of strained relations between the two nations since terrorists attacks on Mumbai, which India blamed on Pakistan.Lorgat, also a former chief executive of the International Cricket Council (ICC), said CSA will consider allowing Pakistani players.I did suggest that we could look into (the possibility) that Pakistani players will play in our T20 league which is very popular, said Lorgat.Lorgat disagreed that India will not be happy with the fill-in arrangements.I don't see why it should, Pakistan was available and it's a bilateral arrangement between the two nations, and we are simply delighted that we can get Pakistan to South Africa, said Lorgat.
