Military base bombings, attacks in Iraq kill 30

Posted:

BAGHDAD (AP) - A series of attacks in Iraq, including a double suicide car bombing targeting a military base, killed 30 people across the country Thursday, officials said. The deadliest attack took place when the two suicide bombers drove their explosive-laden cars into a military base in the town of Tarmiyah late Thursday, killing at least 19 soldiers and wounding 41, authorities said.Soldiers guarding the base opened fire on the first car bomber as he approached, but he still was able to detonate his explosives against a gate at the facility, police said. Two minutes later, the second suicide bomber rammed his car through the gate and exploded when he reached a crowd of soldiers who gathered after the earlier blast, police said.Tarmiyah, a former insurgent stronghold home to Sunnis, is about 50 kilometers (30 miles) north of Baghdad. Last week, two suicide bombers detonated their explosives-laden belts among a group of soldiers and Sahwa militiamen gathered in the orchard of a local Sahwa leader, killing 12, authorities said at the time. The Sahwa movement, also known as the Awakening Council, was formed by U.S. forces in 2007 to help fight the insurgents during the height of Iraqi war. Ever since, it has been a target for Sunni hard-liners who consider them traitors. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the dual car bombing Thursday. Suicide bomb attacks against security forces are a favorite tactic of al-Qaidas local branch. The terror group has recently escalated its campaign of violence in order to thwart government efforts to maintain security.Earlier Thursday, police said a bombing at a tent serving food to pilgrims on their way to Karbala, killed four people and wounded six, police said. Before that, officials said a suicide bomber detonated an explosive-laden car at an army post, killing three soldiers and wounding six in the town of Ana, some 330 kilometers (200 miles) northwest of Baghdad.Police said another bomb blast killed two persons in a town just south of Baghdad. In the northern city of Mosul, police said a bomb struck an outdoor market Thursday evening, killing two people and wounding eight.Hospital officials confirmed the casualty figures. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to speak to journalists.Violence has escalated in Iraq since a deadly security crackdown on a Sunni protest camp in April, with the pace of killing reaching levels unseen since 2008. Todays attacks bring the death toll across the country this month to 57, according to an Associated Press count. According to United Nations figures, more than 5,500 people have been killed since April.

Iran FM says agreement possible by end of nuclear talks

GENEVA (AFP) - Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said Thursday it was possible to reach a deal with world powers on Tehrans nuclear programme by the end of talks in Geneva on Friday.I believe it is possible to reach an understanding or an agreement before we close these negotiations tomorrow evening, Zarif told CNN after a first day of talks between Iran and six world powers. He said Tehran was prepared to address the most immediate concerns about its nuclear programme but insisted it would not fully give up enrichment. There wont be a suspension of our enrichment in its entirety but we can deal with the various issues on the table, he said.He said there had been agreement at the talks on a framework for the deal and that Friday could see the drafting of a joint statement. Now we know what the ingredients should be... and I think our colleagues are ready to start drafting, Zarif said.I hope that by tomorrow morning we can start serious work in order to prepare some kind of joint statement. He refused to go into specifics, saying: We are at a very sensitive stage of negotiations and its best if these negotiations are done at the negotiating table. He said the election of Irans new President Hassan Rouhani, seen as a relative moderate, had presented a rare chance for a deal. There is a window of opportunity now that has been created by the Iranian people... and that opportunity needs to be seized.

Kerry warns of a third intifada it peace talks fail

Posted:

AMMAN (AFP) - US Secretary of State John Kerry delivered on Thursday a grim warning to Israel that failure to make peace with the Palestinians could trigger a new uprising. The alternative to getting back to the talks is the potential of chaos, Kerry said in a joint interview with Israels Channel 2 and the Palestinian Broadcasting Corporation.I mean, does Israel want a third intifada? the top US diplomat asked, using the Arabic word for uprising. The first Palestinian uprising against the Israeli occupation ran from 1987 to 1993, and was followed by a second one from late 2000 to 2005 in which rights groups estimated 3,000 Palestinian and 1,000 Israeli civilians and troops died.Kerry was speaking on his seventh trip to Israel and the West Bank as he seeks to put the troubled Israeli-Palestinian peace negotiations back on track.Angered by continued Israeli settlement building, the Palestinians earlier this week threatened to pull out of the talks which only resumed three months ago after a three-year hiatus.Kerry has slammed the settlements as illegitimate and said new construction should be limited. He repeated grim predictions he made earlier this year that if Israel fails to make peace it will only find itself increasingly isolated by the international community. If we do not find a way to find peace, there will be an increasing isolation of Israel, there will be an increasing campaign of de-legitimisation of Israel thats been taking place in an international basis, he said in a clip of the interview, shown ahead of the full broadcast.

Year's most powerful typhoon hits Philippines

Posted:

MANILA (AFP) - Super Typhoon Haiyan, the most powerful storm in the world this year, hit the Philippines on Friday, as millions of people huddled indoors and business in vulnerable areas shut down.Haiyan smashed the into central island the island of Samar, about 600 kilometres southeast of Manila, at 4:40am (2040 GMT Thursday) and was travelling quickly northwest, state meteorologist Romeo Cajulis told AFP.President Benigno Aquino had on Thursday warned his countrymen to make all possible preparations for Haiyan, which was packing monster wind gusts of nearly 380 kilometres (235 miles) an hour as it approached the Philippines. To our local officials, your constituents are facing a serious peril. Let us do all we can while (Haiyan) has not yet hit land, Aquino said in a nationally televised address. We can minimise the effects of this typhoon if we help each other. Let us remain calm, especially in buying our primary needs, and in moving to safer places.Aquino warned areas within the expected 600-kilometre typhoon front would be exposed to severe flooding as well as devastating winds, while coastal areas may see waves six metres (20 feet) high.More than 125,000 people in the most vulnerable areas had been moved to evacuation centres before Haiyan hit, according to the civil defence office, and millions of others braced for the typhoon in their homes.Authorities said schools in the storms path were closed, ferry services suspended and fishermen ordered to secure their vessels. In the capital of Manila, which was not directly in the typhoons path but still expected to feel some of its impact, many schools were also closed.Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific and other carriers announced the suspension of hundreds of flights, mostly domestic but also some international.Cajulis said Haiyan was travelling quickly, at 39 kilometres an hour, and would travel across the country towards the South China Sea throughout Friday. There were no immediate reports of casualties.State weather forecaster Glaize Escullar said on Thursday Haiyan was expected to hit areas still recovering from a devastating storm in 2011 and from a 7.1-magnitude quake last month. They include the central island of Bohol, the epicentre of the earthquake that killed 222 people, where at least 5,000 survivors are still living in tents while waiting for new homes.Other vulnerable areas are the port cities of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan on the southern island of Mindanao, where flash floods induced by Tropical Storm Washi killed more than 1,000 people in December 2011.Haiyan had maximum sustained winds on Friday morning of 315 kilometres an hour, and gusts of 379 kilometres an hour, according to the US Navys Joint Typhoon Warning Centre. The Philippine state weather service, which typically gives lower wind readings, said the maximum gusts on Friday morning were 275 kilometres an hour. But even that reading would still make Haiyan the worlds strongest typhoon this year, according to David Michael Padua, a meteorologist with the Weather Philippines Foundation, a storm monitoring organisation that runs the www.weather.com.ph website. The Philippines is battered by an average of 20 major storms or typhoons each year, many of them deadly, but scientists have said climate change may be increasing their ferocity and frequency. The Philippines endured the worlds strongest storm of 2012, when Typhoon Bopha left about 2,000 people dead or missing on Mindanao island in December.

Djokovic advances to ATP Finals semis

Posted:

LONDON (AP) - Defending champion Novak Djokovic joined top-ranked Rafael Nadal in the semifinals of the ATP World Tour Finals after overcoming strong resistance from Juan Martin del Potro on Thursday.Djokovic, undefeated in last years Finals, improved to 2-0 in Group B with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 win over the hard-hitting Argentine. Djokovic defeated Roger Federer in his opening match.Federer made light work of Richard Gasquet to clinch his first round-robin win , defeating the Frenchman 6-4, 6-3 to boost his chances of making the semifinals for an 11th time. With his serve its definitely a big advantage if I can get a break advantage and close it out, said Djokovic, who saved two break points early in the decider before taking del Potros serve for a 4-2 lead. Im very glad I could win.Nadal qualified from Group A on Wednesday when he beat Stanislas Wawrinka to clinch the season-ending No. 1 ranking for the third time in his career.Djokovic and del Potro couldnt reproduce their epic Wimbledon semifinal. The in-form players of the autumn exchanged brutal groundstrokes early on, with Djokovic coming out on top of long rallies.Playing more accurately and trying to shorten the points, del Potro soldiered on in the second set and was rewarded for his patience as he converted his first break point of the set in the sixth game thanks to a lucky net cord. The former U.S. Open winner then held his next two service games to force a third set.In the third game, del Potro had 15-40 after Djokovics first double fault of the match. The Serb saved the first break point with an ace and del Potro wasted the other with a botched forehand. The episode sapped del Potros morale and he lost his serve at love in the sixth game. It was decisive. In a match pitting together two stylists, Federer and Gasquet were ordinary. Federer quickly took control and broke Gasquet four times in the match. The Frenchman hit only 11 winners and looked inhibited throughout.Federer, who has won a record six year-end championships, was not having a great day either he had 30 unforced errors but prevailed on important points as Gasquet converted only one of his six break chances. Federer needed five match points to earn his 43rd Finals win.It is a big win for me and hopefully I can keep it up in the next match against Juan Martin del Potro, said Federer, chasing only his second title of the year.Im coming back from a lot of sort of ups and downs, resetting things, trying out things, making sure I get my confidence back, my movement and so forth.Only once in his previous 11 Finals has Federer failed to advance to the last four. A win against del Potro on Saturday will guarantee him a spot in the semis, while Gasquet became the second player to be eliminated, following David Ferrer. It was Federers 11th win in 13 matches against Gasquet, who started by winning his first service game at love before fading. The Finals are Federers last chance to win a big tournament this season. He has won only one title in the past 14 months and has only three victories against top-10 opponents in 2013, including one against del Potro in Paris last week.Im glad I got one back in Paris because I knew we could be again in the same group, we could be playing each other, Federer said. I think that win for me in Paris psychologically was very important. I could beat top-10 guys, I beat Richard, I beat Juan Martin last week. I truly believe my confidence is higher, and thats what I need to beat the best, and Juan Martin is part of that group honestly.

Federer wants more doping tests in tennis

Posted:

LONDON (AP) - In the wake of Novak Djokovics attack against tennis anti-doping program, Roger Federer defended the system and asked for more doping tests on Thursday.Djokovic lashed out at the World Anti-Doping Agency and at tennis authorities this week, saying the decision in Victor Troickis case proved the fight against doping was badly organized.Troicki had an 18-month ban reduced on appeal to 12 months for skipping a blood test in April, though he provided a urine sample which proved negative. The Court of Arbitration for Sport empathized with Troicki but had to uphold a ban.Asked about the case, Federer said at the ATP Finals he has faith in the system but the testing program should be reinforced because he feels like were not getting maybe tested enough. In 2012, the ITF conducted 1,727 in competition urine samples but only 124 blood tests during tournaments. There were a total of 2,185 samples taken either in or out of competition, from urine and blood.I didnt get tested in Basel, I dont think. I didnt get tested in Paris, I dont think. I got tested here after the first match. I just feel like there needs to be more testing done, Federer said, recalling his recent tournaments.I know the budgets can be small sometimes, all these things. I had out-of-competition testing before Basel. I just feel like I used to get tested more, I felt. I think I was tested 25 times in 2003, 2004. Ever since, I think its been clearly going down this season.Last year, International Tennis Federation anti-doping manager Stuart Miller said in an interview with The Associated Press that the ITF tested Federer an average of eight times per year during 2004-06, 11 times per year during 2007-09 and nine times per year in 2010-12.Troicki blamed a tournament anti-doping officer, who he claimed advised him to write to the ITF explaining that he was ill and could not give a blood sample.I do believe that when you are requested for a sample, you have to give the sample, Federer said. It doesnt matter how bad you feel. Im sorry. I think its just very important to give the sample when youre requested to give it because there you are in front of them and there is no way to escape anymore. Thats where we just need to be extremely firm, I believe.

Europa League: Defoe fires Spurs into knockout phase

PARIS (AFP) - Jermain Defoe broke Tottenhams European goal-scoring record on Thursday as he steered his side into the knockout phase of the Europa League with a tough 2-1 victory over Moldovas Sheriff Tiraspol.Spurs join Valencia, Salzburg, Esbjerg, Fiorentina and Dninpro in the last-32 who all booked their places with two matches still remaining in the group phase.Defoes clinical 67th minute penalty, which not only makes him the competitions top scorer with five goals from four matches, also gave him 23 European goals, one more than former England international Martin Chivers.Chivers, who scored 13 goals in 24 matches for England, helped the side win the same competition in 1972 when it was known as the UEFA Cup.Some things are written, I couldnt get a lot of space in the first-half but I just tried to stay patient and top of the list now, Im delighted, said England striker Defoe.I saw Martin (Chivers) at half-time, hes a legend and he just told me to get it so its special for me.Valencia, who won the tournament in 2004 and were twice beaten Champions League finalists, are also into the next round after a Sergio Canales goal five minutes from time gave them a 3-2 victory at Swiss side St Gallen.Premier League club Swansea blew a victory chance against Kuban Krasnodar for the second time when they conceded a last-gasp equaliser but need only avoid defeat when they play St Gallen in their final game or beat Valencia at home in their next to ensure their passage to the knock-out stages.Despite playing the last quarter of an hour with 10-men following defender Xandaos red card at the Kuban Stadium, the Russians netted two minutes into injury time through Ibrahima Balde to earn a 1-1 draw.Ivory Coast forward Wilfried Bony had given the Welsh visitors an early lead but just as Djibril Cisses penalty at the Liberty Stadium had cost them a win last month, so too this time Senegal forward Baldes clever lofted finish broke Swans hearts.Fiorentina, who lost the 1990 final against Serie A rivals Juventus, continued their progress by making it four wins out of four with two goals in the last four minutes from Ryder Matos and Borja Valero which gave them a 2-1 win at Romanians Pandurii Targu-Jiu.Austria Vienna also cruised into next years knockout phase, despite a 2-2 home draw against Belgian club Genk.Denmark also have a representative in the draw, which will be made on December 13, after Esbjerg edged Swedish neighbors Elfsborg 1-0 thanks to Mick van Burens winner.Ukraines Dnipro are also through after brushing aside Portuguese club Pacos de Ferreira 2-0.In a second Anglo-Russian clash, Rubin Kazan opened a clear gap at the top of Group D with a 1-0 win over Wigan.Full-back Oleg Kuzmin hit the winner midway through the first period after escaping down the right and finding acres of space behind the Wigan backline.Wigan remained second after Belgiums Zulte-Waregem won 1-0 at NK Maribor of Slovenia.

1,000 Days: Time to start delivering for Rio

Posted:

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) - The countdown to the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro reaches 1,000 days on Saturday. Sidney Levy knows its time to start producing tangible results.Levy, the chief executive officer of the Rio Games, had something to show for his work on Thursday at the unveiling of the pictograms that will represent every Olympic and Paralympic sport.I think this is a reinforcement that we are delivering, Levy told The Associated Press. The pictograms feature curved, fluid lines meant to represent each sport and the natural curves of the hills and beaches that surround Rio de Janeiro. The rollout was a good-news moment for Rio, which has struggled with delays that have raised concerns for the International Olympic Committee. IOC officials have constantly asked Rio to speed up work on venue and infrastructure construction, and have warned there is little cushion to work with.On-going street protests since the Confederations Cup five months ago a warm-up for next years World Cup have centered on Brazils poor public services. About $15 billion is being spent on the World Cup, and a similar amount on the Olympics.Levy took over in January and has been working for months to get an operating budget approved. Officials are saying it will be ready shortly. The original bid in 2009 listed the budget at $2.8 billion, but most expect it to reach $4 billion or more.Rios Olympics have been overshadowed by the World Cup and the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. But that will soon change. The Rio Games open on Aug. 5, 2016, with the Paralympics to open Sept. 7, 2016.We started with ideas and really nothing more, Levy said. More and more in the next year there will be things you can see, you can touch, you can understand and feel. So this is the first step.Carlos Nuzman, the president of the organizing committee and head of the Brazil Olympic Committee, was pressed about reported delays. We are absolutely confident that all the construction projects will be delivered in the timeframe we expect, Nuzman said.

Too fat to fly: French family stranded in US

Posted:

CHICAGO (AFP) - A French family who came to the United States for medical treatment said they were stranded in Chicago after British Airways determined their son was too fat to fly.Kevin Chenais, 22, spent a year and a half at the Mayo Clinic for treatment of a hormone disorder which led him to weigh 500 pounds. His mother was near tears as she described the familys problems to the local CBS affiliate. We blame British Airways because now they just leave us, and they brought us here, Christina Chenais told the station. If they could bring him here with that problem in economy, there was a way to take him back by economy but just get him back home for his medical treatments to continue. The family spent a week in an airport hotel trying to resolve the matter and, running out of money, has decided their only option is to take a train to New York and cross the Atlantic on the Queen Mary cruise ship.Kevin Chenais requires round-the-clock oxygen and medical attention.Im sure a lot of big people like me or bigger cannot travel because they have the same problem, he told the station, head hanging down as he sat up in bed. This time before leaving I knew something would go wrong.A British Airways spokesperson told AFP that its customer service team worked diligently to find a solution. We will always try to accommodate someone if its possible and safe to do so, Caroline Titmuss wrote in an e-mail.Unfortunately, it is not possible to safely accommodate the customer on any of our aircraft and the family has been offered a full refund. The airline said it provided hotel accommodation for the family along with guidance and support to help explore other travel options.A spokeswoman for the French consulate told AFP it attempted a mediation with British Airways, but the position of the airline is firm on the security issue. It has provided the family with the names of two lawyers who may be able to help. The Chenais family did not immediately return requests for comment.
