Death toll at 23 in Casablanca buildings collapse

Posted:

CASABLANCA (AFP) - The death toll after three buildings collapsed in Moroccos largest city and commercial capital Casablanca rose to 23 on Sunday, officials said.Fifteen bodies were recovered from the rubble in one day on Sunday, including two children and Moroccan actress Amal Maarouf and her mother, local authorities said.News website Yibiladi said the actress had continued to respond to calls on her mobile phone for several hours after the calamity but did not elaborate.Medics said earlier Sunday that 17 people were still being treated in hospital, while authorities warned of more buried bodies.Rescue operations were temporarily suspended on Sunday afternoon as emergency teams sought more sophisticated equipment, sparking anger from relatives of the missing.By evening the site had been cordoned off and the media barred, drawing criticism.Search for bodies suspended, equipment deficient. Three days to notice it, the Economist newspaper scoffed in a post on its Internet site.It was still not known why the three apartment blocks in El-Hank district collapsed on Friday.Residents told AFP the accident probably resulted from haphazard works on the lower floors of the buildings, as well as a general lack of maintenance. An official inquiry has begun, and the residents of three adjoining buildings have been evacuated as a precaution.Firemen managed to rescue at least 55 people, including six children, after the apartment blocks crumpled.King Mohamed VI, who happened to be in the city at the time, visited the scene of the disaster and the injured in hospital.Casablanca has a population of around five million, with many living in squalid conditions in sprawling slums, some exposed to serious safety hazards. Two people died at the end of 2012 when a building came down after bad weather. The housing minister said at the time that between 4,000 and 7,000 buildings in Casablanca were at risk of collapse.

Tennis: Third time lucky for Hewitt on Newport grass

NEWPORT (AFP) - Former world number one Lleyton Hewitt defeated second seed Ivo Karlovic 6-3, 6-7 (4/7), 7-6 (7/3) Sunday to win the $474,000 ATP Hall of Fame Championships. After runner-up finishes the past two years, Hewitt finally captured the Hall of Fame title, although it took a 2 1/2-hour battle after the Australian faltered while serving for the match in the second set and squandered two match points on Karlovic's serve.Third seed Hewitt took the $81,500 top prize in windy conditions for his 30th career ATP title, his second of the season after a January crown at Brisbane, and an eighth career ATP grass-court championship. It was a breakthough triumph for Hewitt after falling to US star John Isner in the 2012 Newport final and to Frenchman Nicolas Mahut last year.It was obviously very tough the last couple of years, Hewitt said. Last year I served for it as well. That just makes it more gratifying.Hewitt has undergone five surgeries in five years to continue his career. We've had some tough times with surgeries the last few years, Hewitt said. But it's nice to know that all that hard work has paid off.Karlovic, 35, and Hewitt, 33, met in the oldest ATP final showdown so far this season and the oldest since the event was first staged in 1976.In the third set, Hewitt never managed a break point but denied Karlovic three times on break points to force a tie-breaker that ended with the Aussie taking five of the final six points, the last when Karlovic send a forehand long.Just had to focus on what I needed to do, Hewitt said. I was just focusing on trying to hold serve in the third set. It was a tough match. I was really happy to get through.Karlovic made his comeback from viral meningitis at this event a year ago after being in a coma and saw the runner-up effort as an achievement.Last year when I was in the hospital I didn't know if I would be able to do this again, Karlovic said. To be here and do this now it's an unbelievable feeling.Hewitt, the 2001 US Open and 2002 Wimbledon champion, won for the second time in six meetings with Karlovic.Hewitt, ranked 12 spots below his rival at 43rd in the world, broke the Croatian in the ninth game to claim the first set in just 33 minutes. In the second set, Hewitt smashed a crosscourt backhand winner in front of Karlovic to break for a 5-3 lead. But serving for the match, Hewitt stumbled as he had the year before, double faulting two points from the title and then missing a backhand to surrender a break.Hewitt managed two match points on Karlovic's serve in the 12th game, but they were saved with a service winner and an ace, setting up the tie-breaker in which Karlovic won the last three points to force a third set.It was Karlovic's third final of the year, having also lost to Japan's Kei Nishikori at Memphis in February and German Philipp Kohlschreiber in May at Dusseldorf.Karlovic has not won an ATP title since claiming the fifth of his career last July in Colombia.

Motorcycling: Marquez wins German MotoGP

SACHSENRING (AFP) - Spaniard Marc Marquez won his ninth consecutive race of the season on Sunday as he dominated the German MotoGP to finish ahead of Honda teammate and compatriot Dani Pedrosa with Jorge Lorenzo on a Yamaha in third. The win gives Marquez a perfect total of 225 points with Pedrosa taking sole possession of second but 77 points back.Italian Valentino Rossi, who was fourth on Sunday, is third in the rankings, 84 adrift.Marquez is also the youngest rider to win nine races in a row, breaking the 1964 record held by the late Mike Hailwood. The race had a farcical start as a group of 14 riders got caught out by the drying weather conditions. They tried to change tyres at the last minute and had to wait in the pit-lane until the bikes already on the grid and on dry tyres had gone past.It was tough and when I saw (Stefan) Bradl changing tyres at the beginning I thought that was the right choice because there was only one corner that was completely wet, said defending champion Marquez.Everyone went in (to change tyres) including my main rivals -- Dani (Pedrosa) and Valentino (Rossi). When I saw them go in, I followed but it worked out ok, continued MarquezBradl, the 2011 Moto2 world champion, took advantage of the chaos to lead for the opening stages before Marquez glided past the German with 24 laps to go.It then came down to a straight battle between Marquez and Pedrosa with Lorenzo well back in third and Rossi, on the second factory Yamaha, also cut adrift back in fourth place.Pedrosa applied what pressure he could on his teammate but Marquez rode with supreme confidence and continued to set the fastest laps of the race as he accelerated further and further into the distance. We were comfortable in front, myself and Marc, and we held them off easily, said Pedrosa. He had about half a second on me and I couldnt catch him but I had a good race, Im happy and my team did a really good job. There are nine races to go in the 2014 season with the next round set for Indianapolis on August 10.Earlier, Swiss rider Dominique Aegerter rode his Suter to victory in the Moto2 category with Finlands Mika Kallio a close second on a Kalex and teammate Simone Corsi of Italy claiming third spot.Championship leader Esteve Rabat took fourth spot on his Kalex as Kallio, who came into the weekend just 26 points behind the Spaniard, made up ground in the overall standings. It was the first career win for the 23-year-old Aegerter who finished second earlier in the campaign in Spain and third in the United States.Jack Miller of Australia on a KTM won the Moto3 race.Miller, who started from pole position, took the chequered flag ahead of South African Brad Binder on a Mahindra and Frenchman Alexis Masbou on a Honda. It was a fourth win of the year for the Australian who moved further clear of Italian teammate Romano Fenati in the Moto3 overall standings after nine races.

RIO DE JANEIRO (AFP) - Germany's Manuel Neuer won the World Cup Golden Glove award for the tournament's best goalkeeper after helping his side to a 1-0 victory over Argentina in Sunday's final. The 28-year-old Bayern Munich player was presented with the award at Rio de Janeiro's Maracana Stadium moments after the triumph. It is unbelievable, and an awesome experience, said Neuer of his side's victory, which gave Germany their fourth world title. We have had incredible cohesion since the start of our preparations. We have had our share of setbacks, including losing players like Lars and Sven Bender, as well as Marco Reus, who all deserve to be world champions.Germany are world champions. I don't know how long we will celebrate, but we will go about it with big grins.Neuer beat off competition from Argentine opposite number Sergio Romero and Keylor Navas of surprise package Costa Rica to win the award. The former Schalke goalkeeper was beaten only four times in the tournament and kept four clean sheets, including the 1-0 quarter-final win over France and the victory over Argentina in the final. He succeeds Spain's Iker Casillas, who was voted the outstanding goalkeeper at the 2010 tournament in South Africa.

Football: Germany win World Cup, beat Argentina 1-0

Posted:

RIO DE JANEIRO (AFP) - Mario Goetze scored a superb extra-time winner as Germany beat Argentina 1-0 to become the first European team to win a World Cup held in South America on Sunday.Bayern Munich star Goetze struck in the 113th minute to finally break Argentina's resistance as Lionel Messi's dream of emulating Diego Maradona ended in defeat.Germany has now won four World Cups, putting the European powerhouses just one behind Brazil's record tally of five. It's unbelievable what we have achieved. Whether we have the best individual player doesn't matter at all, you just need to have the best team, said delighted Germany captain Philipp Lahm.We improved throughout the tournament and didn't get down when things didn't always go our way, we just stuck to our path and at the end we're standing here as world champions. It's an unbelievable feeling. The team stayed calm and patient, we knew that we had something left at the end.The decisive moment of a World Cup brimming with wonderful goals came with penalties looming in front of 74,738 fans at Rio de Janeiro's famous Maracana Stadium.Andre Schuerrle burst clear down the left flank and crossed for Goetze. The 22-year-old took the ball on his chest and then volleyed past Sergio Romero to spark delirium amongst the largely pro-German crowd.Messi was largely anonymous for most of the evening and his miserable evening was summed up when a late free-kick to equalise sailed over the bar.The victory was celebrated raucously by Brazilians in the crowd, who had dreaded the prospect of sworn South American rivals Argentina lifting the title in their backyard. An absorbing first half saw Germany forced into a reshuffle moments before kick-off with inexperienced Christoph Kramer replacing Sami Khedira after the Real Madrid star injured a calf in the warm up.With Bastian Schweinsteiger running midfield the Germans laid siege to Argentinian territory, passing smoothly and denying Messi a route into the game.Yet for all Germany's early dominance they created little in the way of clear chances. And it was Argentina who were presented with a glorious chance to open the scoring.Toni Kroos misdirected a header back to Manuel Neuer to send Gonzalo Higuain racing through on goal. But with only Neuer to beat the Napoli striker dragged his shot wide to disbelief from fans and team-mates.Germany continued to probe for openings, and a Lahm pass almost put Thomas Mueller clear. The pace of Argentina on the counter-attack continued to unsettle Germany however.Schweinsteiger picked up a yellow card for bringing down Ezequiel Lavezzi just after the half hour mark.Moments later, Higuain had the ball in the net for Argentina only to see the goal disallowed for offside.Germany's personnel problems deepened when Kramer himself went off, prompting the introduction of Schuerrle. The Germans remained unfazed by the setback however, and quickly set about reimposing their control of the game.Schuerrle drew a fine near-post save from Romero on 37 minutes with a rasping shot after Mueller's cutback. But the latent threat of Messi meant Germany could never entirely relax. Messi burst away down the right and raced into the box, toe-poked past Neuer only for Jerome Boateng to clear. On the stroke of half-time Benedikt Hoewedes came within inches of scoring, crashing a header from a Kroos corner against the post. The second half followed a similar pattern, Germany controlling possession but Argentina often threatening on the break.Messi squandered another golden Argentinian chance shortly after the restart, latching onto a pass from Lucas Biglia but scuffing his shot wide of Neuer. The hard-fought nature of the contest led to a flurry of cards from referee Nicola Rizzoli, who cautioned Javier Mascherano and Sergio Aguero in quick succession for fouls on Miroslav Klose and Schweinsteiger. The remainder of the half saw neither side able to get on top.Germany controlled possession without really testing Romero, while Argentina were unable to pass a German defence superbly marshalled by Mats Hummels and Boateng.Schuerrle came closest to breaking the deadlock in the first period of extra-time, forcing Romero into a desperate block.Penalties looked to be the likeliest outcome, but Goetze had other ideas.

CEB chief executive Collier to retire

Posted:

NOTTINGHAM (AFP) - David Collier will retire as chief executive of the England and Wales Cricket Board at the end of the current English season, the governing body announced Sunday. After 10 years at ECB I believe it is the right time to step aside and retire from the position of chief executive as I shall turn 60 in the spring and I do believe the time is right for a new CEO to open the batting, Collier said in an ECB statement after British media reports on Saturday had flagged up his impending exit.He added: I am immensely proud of the achievements and the enormous strides forward which cricket in England and Wales has made during the past decade.ECB chairman Giles Clarke, paying tribute to Collier, said: David has overseen the most successful period of development, playing success and growth for cricket in England and Wales and we are extremely grateful to him.During Collier's 10 years at the ECB, England have enjoyed several memorable moments, including an Ashes series victory in Australia for the first time in almost a quarter of a century in 2011/12 as well as three home Ashes series wins.England also went to the top of the International Cricket Council's Test rankings in 2012, again for the first time. However, they have since slipped dramatically from that position and suffered a 5-0 Ashes whitewash in Australia in 2013/14.There was also a first win in an International Cricket Council global tournament on Collier's watch, at the 2010 World Twenty20 in the West Indies.Off the pitch, Collier played a key role in the lucrative sale of live television rights to a subscription-based broadcaster. But both Collier and Clarke were key figures in the ECB's short-lived and embarrassing involvement with subsequently convicted fraudster Allen Stanford, which pitted the England side against the businessman's Caribbean all-star team in a $20 million winner-takes-all Twenty20 match in Antigua in 2008. Collier's exit is another high-profile change in ECB management personnel since the end of last year.Paul Downton was appointed as managing director, following Hugh Morris's move back to Glamorgan, before England's embarrassing Ashes campaign in Australia. In the aftermath of that disappointment, head coach Andy Flower resigned his position.Flower, and limited-overs coach Ashley Giles, were replaced by Peter Moores, back for a second spell in charge of the England team in all formats.England also severed all ties with controversial star batsman Kevin Pietersen in a bid to bolster team harmony.Alastair Cook was retained as captain but has endured a tricky start under Moores and England have not won a Test match since last August, losing six of their last eight matches.

India and England draw 1st Test

Posted:

NOTTINGHAM (AP) - England and India drew the first test on Sunday at Trent Bridge as Bhuvneshwar Kumar became the second No. 9 in test history to make two half centuries in the same match.Play ended on day five with Kumar undefeated on 63 after 58 in the first innings when India declared its second innings at 391-9 in the final session.India led by 352 by the end but had resisted the temptation to declare earlier and have an outside chance of causing England any concern.Earlier Sunday, England had struck three times in the opening session as it looked to try and force a result which always looked unlikely on a lifeless and slow pitch. It is a tough job being a groundsman. But it was not ideal, England captain Alastair Cook admitted. It was pretty flat and you were just trying to wait for a batsman error.Stuart Broad provided England with an early breakthrough when he trapped Virat Kohli on 8. In his next over, Ajinkya Rahane (24) edged Broad behind to Matt Prior. And Broad was unfortunate not to take the wicket of India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who edged to his opposite number Cook at first slip on five, only for Cook to drop a straightforward chance. But Dhoni did not take full advantage of his reprieve, adding only six more runs before Liam Plunkett bowled him with his first ball of the day.Debutant Stuart Binny then came to the crease and guided India away from danger with his knock of 78, aided by 31 from Ravindra Jadeja whose innings ended when he edged James Anderson behind to Prior.All-rounder Binny, who only made one run in the first innings and failed to take a wicket in his 10 overs bowled, brought up his maiden half century with consecutive fours off Plunkett. He had faced 86 balls. He has played a lot of domestic cricket and that exposure has really helped him, Dhoni said of Binny. He is someone who can definitely contribute for a long time. This wicket did not suit him much but I feel as the series progresses, he will be a good bowler.Alongside Kumar, Binny put on a 91-run partnership for the eighth wicket before Moeen Ali removed him lbw.Kumar, who also got a five-wicket haul in England's innings, then brought up his 50 with a single off Ali to become the second player batting ninth to make two 50s in the same test after Australia's Peter Siddle, against India in Delhi in 2013.Cook, who surprisingly bowled two overs to the delight of home fans at Trent Bridge, then removed Sharma for 13, who was caught behind by Prior before India declared for a draw.It was Cook's first test wicket. It was a good test for us, Dhoni said. We put pressure on them in their first innings. We tried quite a few things but it doesn't always go your way. It was difficult when the bowlers got tired and the ball got softer.England's Anderson was awarded man of the match for his test record 10th wicket 198-run partnership with Joe Root, which saw him set the highest ever batting score by an England No. 11 of 81.I'm actually more stiff from batting, to be honest, said Anderson, who bowled 59 overs in the test match. I've got a new found respect for batsmen. I think you've got to give credit to both teams on that pitch for trying to create entertaining cricket. We tried really hard today to force a win but it wasn't to be.Cook also praised the efforts of Anderson and Root, who made an unbeaten 154, as they batted from 298-9 to 496 all out on day four.It was an outstanding hundred from Joe Root who has really come back to his best, Cook said. For Jimmy to get 80, I didn't see it coming but thank God he got it.The second test of the five-match series starts Thursday at Lord's.

Football: Germany-Argentina 0-0 at half time in World Cup final

Posted:

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) - The World Cup final between Argentina and Germany is still level at 0-0 after the first half.Argentina was the more dangerous team in the first 45 minutes of play, and forward Gonzalo Higuain the most dangerous player. The Napoli striker missed a great chance to put his team ahead in the 21st minute, shooting wide of the net after an errant headed backpass. He then had a goal ruled out for offside in the 30th.Germany was forced to play without Sami Khedira, who pulled out of the starting lineup minutes before kickoff and was replaced by Christoph Kramer.Kramer, however, was first injured in the 18th minute and then was replaced by Andre Schuerrle in the 32nd with what appeared to be head injury.Schuerrle, who scored the last two goals against Brazil in the 7-1 semifinal rout as a substitute, then had Germany's best chance in the 37th, but Argentina goalkeeper Sergio Romero made the block.Benedikt Hoewedes's stoppage-time header hit the post. The match at the Maracana Stadium kicked off with Germany wearing its traditional white shirts and Argentina playing in dark blue. With Lionel Messi in the starting lineup, Argentina has one of the best players in history on the field. The four-time world player of the year has had a stellar World Cup so far, and a win on Sunday will give him the one major title he is missing. For Germany, a team led by Philipp Lahm and Bastian Schweinsteiger is trying to finally win a major trophy after a nearly 20-year wait. The Germans, whose last major title came at the 1996 European Championship, reached the World Cup final in 2002 and the semifinals in 2006. They also reached the final at Euro 2008 and the semifinals at Euro 2012.Historically, however, Germany has been a consistent winner. The national team is trying to win its fourth World Cup, but the first for a united country. West Germany won in 1954, 1974 and 1990, while a united Germany lost in the 2002 final to Brazil.Argentina is a two-time champion, winning titles in 1978 and 1986.The last World Cup title for each team came against the other. The Argentines, led by Diego Maradona, beat West Germany in Mexico in the 1986 final, while the Germans leveled the series by winning four years later in Italy.Sunday's match is something of a tiebreaker, and it comes at one of the most iconic football venues in the world.
