Formula One: Hamilton on top in the heat

Posted:

HOCKENHEIM (AFP) - Lewis Hamilton clocked the fastest lap in Friday afternoon's second free practice session for this weekend's German Grand Prix, the Briton outpacing Mercedes team-mate and championship leader Nico Rosberg. On a scorching hot day at the Hockenheim circuit, with air temperatures touching 34 degrees Celsius and the track temperature reaching 58 degrees, the Mercedes men were again in a class of their own as they continued their battle for this year's drivers' world championship.Hamilton, who cut Rosberg's championship lead to four points by winning the British Grand Prix two weeks ago when the German suffered his first retirement of the season, clocked a best lap of one minute 18.341 seconds. That put him 0.024 seconds ahead of Rosberg. That was ok, pretty good, said Hamilton afterwards. The temperatures are so high that it was very difficult with the tyres, but we learned a lot in that session. As usual qualifying is going to be very important like it is at every circuit we go to.Australian Daniel Ricciardo was third fastest in the leading Red Bull, once again proving he has the pace to deserve his place among the elite, ahead of Finn Kimi Raikkonen of Ferrari.Danish rookie Jan Magnussen was fifth for the improving McLaren team ahead of Brazilian Felipe Massa, of Williams, Briton Jenson Button in the second McLaren and defending four-time champion Sebastian Vettel of Germany in the second Red Bull.Two-time champion Spaniard Fernando Alonso was down in ninth for Ferrari after a promising morning session. The session saw the conditions take their toll on some teams with Japanese Kamui Kobayashi of Caterham suffering a close encounter with danger when his car burst into flames. He jumped clear as smoke poured from the rear of his car and then ran back with several marshals, armed with fire extinguishers, to extinguish the flames.Earlier, in the morning session, Briton Susie Wolff, the first woman to take part in a Formula One weekend for 22 years, had impressed for Williams by finishing 15th in opening practice topped by Rosberg. She was only 0.2 seconds slower than her team-mate Massa after a technical problem on her opening lap.It was tough at the beginning, but so nice to be out on track every lap, going quicker and getting more feel in the car. I'm just really happy to have completed a successful FP1 session.

Cycling: Vincenzo Nibali wins Tour de France 13th stage

Posted:

CHAMROUSSE (AFP) - Vincenzo Nibali continued to stamp his mark on the 2014 Tour de France with his third stage victory on Friday to increase his overall lead to more than three minutes. The Italian champion proved too strong once again for his rivals as he rode away from the field on the final climb to Chamrousse on the 197.5km 13th stage from Saint-Etienne.Reigning champion Chris Froome and two-time winner Alberto Contador may have crashed out of this Tour already but Nibali said he would have been difficult to beat regardless of their misfortunes.I think I'm in the best form of anyone in the Tour, he said. I'm sorry we don't have the duel we hoped for with Froome and Alberto but I got here in great form to be very competitive and my level is very high.Australian Richie Porte totally cracked on a scorching hot day in the Alps and came home almost nine minutes behind the Astana leader to drop from second to 16th overall.Only Spaniard Alejandro Valverde and Frenchman Thibaut Pinot of the contenders could offer any hint of resistance but still came home 50sec and 53sec respectively behind the winner.Valverde moved up to second but is now 3:37 behind while Pinot, 24, is up to fourth at 4:40.Romain Bardet, 23, climbed onto the podium as he came home 1:23 behind Nibali to keep hold of the young rider's white jersey by just 16sec ahead of French compatriot Pinot. But the day was all about Nibali, who showed he doesn't need his team around him as he is simply the strongest rider at the Tour.Chief lieutenant Jakob Fuglsang had crashed on the descent between the first category Col de Palaquit and the final uncategorised ascent to Chamrousse, while Michele Scaproni was having an off day.Once Tanel Kangert pulled over before the final 10km, Nibali was shorn of support.Valverde attacked inside the final 10km but Nibali responded, with Pinot tucking in behind the Italian.Nibali then launched his own move 6.6km from home and this time Valverde couldn't respond. The Sicilian caught Konig and Majka and the three cooperated until Nibali kicked for home with 3km left. The Astana leader said he hadn't planned to ride away to a stage victory but once he saw Porte struggling he had concentrated on trying to break Valverde. It was very hot but the more you climbed the better it got. Still the heat is the same for everybody, said the 2010 Vuelta a Espana winner and 2013 Giro d'Italia champion.I saw Porte had dropped off already, perhaps because of the heat, so my aim was to gain time on Valverde.I accelerated to get up to the two leaders and we were collaborating because we knew there was a long way to go to the finish and tomorrow (Saturday) will be a tough day.But there wasn't great collaboration and I saw that Valverde and Pinot were coming back up to us so I upped the tempo and with that came the victory too. With Froome out of the race and Porte now out of contention, Team Sky manager Dave Brailsford said they would have to target stage wins.Let's see how the next few days go, we can look to animate the race as much as we can and let's go from there, he said. He (Porte) is disappointed and when you're disappointed it's not the time to start analysing anything, just support the lad. It was just a question then of minimising his losses and keep on going. The day had begun with a nine man breakaway before stage eight winner Blel Kadri attacked on the penultimate climb.Jan Bakelants followed him but both were passed by Alessandro De Marchi. However, despite opening a gap of almost 4min on the peloton, the Italian was quickly reeled in on the final climb, after which Konig went clear, followed by Majka. But neither could match Nibali's final burst.

North Waziristan: US drone attack kills 11 in Data Khel

Posted:

MIRANSHAH (AFP) - A US drone strike targeting a Pakistani Taliban compound on Saturday killed eleven insurgents in Data Khel area of North Waziristan near the border with Afghanistan, officials said. The attack came in North Waziristan, where for the past month the Pakistani military has been fighting to wipe out longstanding bases of Taliban and other militants. The drone fired eight missiles on the compound around 2:00am (2100 GMT) on Saturday killing eleven members of the Punjabi faction of the Pakistani Taliban, a senior security official in the region told AFP.The official said the dead included two important commanders of the Pakistani Taliban, but he refused to reveal their identities. An official had earlier given a lower death toll of eight militants dead. The strike took place in the Mada Khel village of tehsil Data Khel, a town that lies around 22 miles (36 kilometres) west of North Waziristan's capital Miranshah.US drone strikes have picked up since the military offensive in Waziristan after a near six month hiatus. Since 12 June at least four drone strikes have been reported in the tribal areas. The assault by Pakistan's military was launched after a dramatic attack by militants on Karachi airport which killed dozens of people and marked the end of a faltering peace process with the Pakistani Taliban.More than 400 militants and 25 soldiers have been killed in the assault so far, according to the military, though the area is off-limits to journalists, making it impossible to verify the number and identity the dead independently. Pakistan routinely protests against US drone strikes, which have been targeting militants in the tribal areas since 2004, saying they are a violation of sovereignty and counterproductive in the fight against terror.Military officials have also strongly denied suggestions that there has been collusion with the US on drone strikes.More than 800,000 people have been forced to flee from North Waziristan by the assault, with most ending up in the nearby town of Bannu. There have been fears that many top militants also fled, including fighters from the feared Haqqani network which is blamed for numerous bloody attacks in Afghanistan.

Oil prices slip amid Ukraine, Gaza tensions

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - Oil prices slipped on Friday, one day after a Malaysia Airlines passenger plane was shot down in battle-torn eastern Ukraine and Israel began a ground assault in Gaza.New York's benchmark West Texas Intermediate (WTI) for August closed at $103.13 a barrel, down six cents from Thursday's closing level. In London, Brent North Sea for delivery in September fell 65 cents to settle at $107.24 a barrel.Despite WTI's price dip, the key futures contract has gained about 3.0 percent since Monday, rebounding after three straight weeks of declines, and looks set to rise in the coming weeks given the precarious geopolitical situation, said Tim Evans of Citi Futures. The United States has said evidence suggests that pro-Moscow separatists downed the Malaysia Airlines plane with a surface-to-air missile, killing all 298 people on board -- with the possible technical assistance of Russians. If Russia turns out to have played any part in yesterday's shooting down of a passenger plane over east Ukraine, there is a risk of sanctions being further tightened, Commerzbank analysts said in a research note.In this case, it would not only be gas prices in Europe that would react, but also the prices of oil, nickel, copper, aluminium, wheat and palladium -- after all, Russia is one of the world's biggest producers and exporters of these commodities, they said.Russia is the world's second-largest producer of crude oil. Ukraine is also a major conduit for Russian gas exports to Europe.Ukraine's government and Western leaders have accused Russia of supporting the separatist rebellion in the country's east, but Moscow has denied the allegations.Investors are also keeping a wary eye on events in the Gaza Strip after Israel sent in troops Thursday in a ground offensive aimed at smashing Hamas's network of cross-border tunnels.UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon will fly to the Middle East on Saturday in an effort to end the latest violence in Gaza, a top official told the Security Council on Friday.Israel warned Friday it could broaden the ground assault, as intensifying tank fire hiked the Palestinian death toll to 289 since the fighting began on July 8.

Dollar steadies vs euro in wake of Ukraine plane crash

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - The dollar steadied against the euro Friday in cautious trade a day after a Malaysian passenger plane was shot down over Ukraine and Israel launched a Gaza ground assault.Currencies stabilized and Wall Street stocks rebounded from Thursdays drubbing amid the heightened geopolitical tensions. The United States has said evidence suggests that pro-Moscow separatists, possibly with Russian technical assistance, downed the Malaysia Airlines plane with a surface-to-air missile, killing all 298 people on board.Ukraines government and Western leaders have accused Russia of supporting the separatist rebellion in the countrys east, but Moscow has denied the allegations. The growing possibility that the crash was not caused by a mechanical accident should have triggered additional risk aversion but instead of fear, it created relief in the markets, said Kathy Lien of BK Asset Management in a market note.Investors are also keeping a wary eye on events in the Gaza Strip after Israel sent in troops Thursday in a ground offensive aimed at smashing Hamass network of cross-border tunnels.Caution is warranted but for the most part, investors have priced in Russia/Ukraine/Israel/Gaza risk, Lien said.

Flower recognises Pakistan batting 'challenge'

Posted:

LAHORE (AFP) - New Pakistan batting coach Grant Flower said improving the side's faltering hitters would be a challenge as he assumed the role Friday. The 43-year-old joined on a two-year contract after a successful coaching stint with his native Zimbabwe, which ended in 2012.His task is to improve Pakistan's fortunes at the crease which have flopped recently, most notably last year's 3-0 Test whitewash against South Africa when they were bowled out for just 49.We all know how talented the players are and I rate them high. But maybe sometime they don't get most of their talent out and I am here to coach them, Flower said. The younger brother of accomplished Zimbabwean batsman Andy, who coached England until last year, said he would not have taken the job if he didn't think he could make a difference. The challenge of being in a different place brought me here, Grant said at his introductory press conference. His stint starts in earnest on next month's tour of Sri Lanka when he teams up with new head coach Waqar Younis.Flower played 67 Tests and 221 one-day internationals for Zimbabwe. He said he was determined to get the most out of the batsmen at his disposal. I do know some of the players and know their constraints as well and some areas where I need to work on. Another best thing about Pakistan batting is their flare, I would never want to take it out from any of them, he added. So may be its just about fine-tuning with some of the batsman and getting them to play with more consistency.Pakistan will play two Tests and three one-day internationals against Sri Lanka.

South Africa's Philander fined for ball-tampering

Posted:

GALLE (AFP) - South Africa seam bowler Vernon Philander was fined 75 per cent of his match fee on Friday after being accused of ball tampering during the first Test against Sri Lanka. The International Cricket Council (ICC) said the 29-year-old was charged after footage emerged of him attempting to change the condition of the ball by scratching the surface with his fingers and thumb. The charge was laid following the conclusion of Friday's play and after viewing television footage by on-field umpires Billy Bowden and Richard Kettleborough, third umpire Nigel Llong, fourth umpire Ruchira Palliyaguruge as well as match referee Jeff Crowe, the ruling body said in a statement. The incident that led to the charge being laid took place in the afternoon when Philander was captured on footage changing the condition of the ball by scratching the surface with his fingers and thumb. The footage, which was not aired during live coverage, was viewed by the umpires after the close of play. The penalty was accepted by Philander without contest so there was no need for a hearing. At the end of the third day, South Africa, spurred on by fast bowler Dale Steyn's impressive figures of 5-50, had reduced Sri Lanka to 283-9, still trailing the visitors by 172 runs.

Four-star Kumar compounds Cook's woes

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - England captain Alastair Cook suffered yet another failure with the bat as Bhuvneshwar Kumar kept India on top on the second day of the second Test at Lord's on Friday.Fast-medium bowler Kumar took an impressive four for 46 in 23 overs, his haul including all of the top four England batsmen as the home side reached stumps on 219 for six. That left them 76 runs behind India's first innings 295 after Cook had fallen for just 10.Only Gary Ballance (110) and Moeen Ali (32) offered much resistance in a fifth-wicket stand of 98 after England slumped to 113 for four.I have been watching cricket matches at Lord's from my childhood, so it's good to come here and take four wickets, said 24-year-old Kumar.Whereas India batted on a lively 'green top' on Thursday, conditions for batting improved significantly on Friday, a hot day draining the pitch of much lingering moisture.Nevertheless Kumar and his fellow India seamers maintained a far more consistently challenging length than their English counterparts. The England bowlers bowled a really short length and we learnt from that, said Kumar, who starred in last week's drawn series opener at Trent Bridge with three Test-bests in innings of 58 and 63 not out, as well as figures of five for 82.It is the kind of pitch, where you might get more wickets if you stick to a stump-to-stump line. Before this match, Ballance was warned by England about his responsibilities, having been pictured shirtless in in a Nottingham bar after the first Test.It was a bit embarrassing, said the 24-year-old. I was probably a bit naive, but I didn't really break any rules. But Ballance understood Friday what England required of him on the field. It was tough this morning. They bowled well, he said. I just tried to hang in, scrap and hope that the runs would come later on.Cook was caught behind by opposing skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni off Kumar who has looked at home in England despite playing all his six Tests before this series in India.Left-handed opener Cook's exit meant it was now 26 innings since he had scored the last of his England record 25 Test hundreds, with his tally for the calendar year standing at a mere 107 runs in eight innings. For most of his 29-ball innings, Cook looked assured. But, not moving his feet, the 29-year-old nicked a good length Kumar away-swinger to wicketkeeper Dhoni.Australia-born opener Sam Robson, dropped in the slips on seven, squandered his reprieve by driving loosely at a wide Kumar ball and was caught behind having made 17.Experienced batsman Ian Bell's run of low scores, while not as bad as that of Cook, continued as he made it 18 innings without a Test hundred.Bell fell for 16 when, trying to evade a short ball from Kumar, he gloved a gentle catch to third slip.Joe Root, fresh his 154 not out in Nottingham came in facing yet another salvage mission. But Root was lbw for 13 to left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja.Ballance was fortunate when, on 32, he edged medium-pacer Stuart Binny between Dhoni and first slip. But he made the most of his luck in a composed display. The Zimbabwe born-left hander drove and cut Binny for two fours in as many balls to go to 93 before two more fours off the same bowler, a clip off his legs and an on-drive, saw Ballance to a hundred in 186 balls including 14 fours. It was the Yorkshire batsman's second hundred in five Tests and second in as many at Lord's after his unbeaten 104 against Sri Lanka last month.Ali's painstaking two-hour knock ended when he was lbw to fellow part-time spinner Murali Vijay.Ballance followed soon afterwards when, with India having taken the new ball, he was well caught down the legside by Dhoni off Kumar to end a five-hour stay at the crease. India had been in dire straits at 145 for seven. But England let them off the hook as India doubled their total to 290 for nine at Thursday's close thanks mainly to Ajinkya Rahane's superb 103 and Kumar's useful 36.

Zimbabwe beat Afghanistan by six wickets

Posted:

BULAWAYO (AFP) - Sean Williams hit a half century while skipper Brendan Taylor made a crucial 42 as Zimbabwe eased to a six-wicket win over Afghanistan in the first one-day international on Friday.Chasing 224 to win, the home side reached their target with more than four overs to spare in the first of a three-match series.Williams hit 70 off 65 balls with eight boundaries and a six while rock-solid Taylor made 43 off 52 deliveries.Afghanistan, looking to build exposure and experience ahead of their maiden World Cup appearance next year, were put into bat and lost opener Usman Ghani for nought in the second over.Experienced Samiullah Shenwari, with 65 off 84 balls with three fours and a six, and skipper Mohammad Nabi, who made a brisk 54 off 32 balls helped by three huge sixes, helped Afghanistan to 223-9 in their 50 overs.Zimbabwe had opener Vusi Sibanda dismissed for just four in the third over, but Afghanistan were always destined to struggle defending such a modest total. The second and third games take place at the same venue on Sunday and Tuesday.

Low inflation can hit European growth: IMF

Posted:

PARIS (AFP) - IMF chief Christine Lagarde warned on Friday that low inflation could damage growth in Europe and urged the European Central Bank to maintain a flexible policy. The former French economy minister also urged caution over asset prices, which she said could be too high in relation to fundamentals.Obstinately low inflation can seriously undermine growth, said Lagarde, who recently hinted that the 3.6 percent global growth forecast for 2014 might have to be trimmed. The good news, Lagarde said, was that European economies are beginning to emerge from the crisis. But the downside, she warned, was that investors could be a little too optimistic on a region that is still saddled with high unemployment and public debt.We are seeing this in a certain number of indicators. We are also seeing this in the very positive orientation of markets, perhaps a little too positive in respect to fundamentals, Lagarde said in a speech at the Robert Schuman Foundation in Paris.Lagarde did not specify which European markets were overly optimistic.Monetary policy should remain supportive until private demand has fully recovered and the European Central Bank has achieved its price stability objective, she said.Last month the European Central Bank cut its key interest rates, including taking one into negative territory for the first time, in a bid to help the regions stalling economy emerge from the eurozone debt crisis.Earlier this month, Lagarde had asked governments to boost public investment and help drive the global recovery. The IMF head also warned against rising youth joblessness in Europe saying corrective measures were needed immediately if the continent wanted to remain a force in the world.Today when one looks at skills and jobs across the world, there is fierce competition, she said. From this point of view, youth unemployment which stands at an average of 24 percent in the EU countries is simply tragic, she said.A jobless youth ...slowly loses his or her skills, loses confidence in his or her talents and the capacity to learn new things, leading to future employment being at risk, she said.Europe needs this generation to keep its place in the global economy, Lagarde said.
