Football: Argentina beat Dutch to reach World Cup final

Posted:

SAO PAULO (AFP) - Argentine goalkeeper Sergio Romero saved two penalties in a shootout with the Netherlands on Wednesday to take his country through to the World Cup final for the first time since 1990.Lionel Messis Argentina beat the Dutch 4-2 in a penalty shootout after their cagey semi-final in Sao Paulo finished goalless. They play Germany in Sundays final in Rio de Janeiro. The drab match was the polar opposite of Germanys 7-1 annihilation of Brazil in the first semi-final 24 hours earlier. But Romero, who barely played for his Monaco club side last season settled matters by repelling spot-kicks from Ron Vlaar and Wesley Sneijder. It was the second time that Holland, who lost the 2010 final to Spain, were beaten on penalties in a World Cup semi-final. They fell to Brazil in 1998.We have given everything and Im incredibly proud of this team, Dutch star striker Arjen Robben said after. It came down to penalties and they simply did better, he told Dutch broadcaster NOS. To lose like this simply sucks, it hurts. The result was particularly cruel for Vlaar, who marshalled his defence imperiously throughout the game.Messi had no answer to the Aston Villa centre-backs decisive interceptions, but the Barcelona superstar can nonetheless still hope to confirm his greatness in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday when he appears in his first World Cup final.Although reserve goalkeeper Tim Krul had saved two penalties in Hollands shootout success against Costa Rica in the quarter-finals, coach Louis van Gaal kept faith in Jasper Cillessen this time.Romeros saves from Vlaar and Sneijder put Argentina in a commanding position and with Messi, Ezequiel Garay and Sergio Aguero all scoring, it was left to Maxi Rodriguez to dispatch the spot-kick that sent Argentina into the final. It was only Argentinas second win over the Netherlands in nine attempts -- their first since the 1978 World Cup final -- and it enabled Messi and his team-mates to pay appropriate homage to Argentine great Alfredo Di Stefano, who died on Monday aged 88.Ten days after effectively being ruled out of the tournament with a torn groin muscle, Nigel de Jong made a sensational return to the Dutch midfield on a cool, overcast evening in Sao Paulo. The AC Milan enforcer quickly set about tracking Messi the length and breadth of the pitch, but it was Argentina who enjoyed the best of the first half.Messi fired a free-kick through the Dutch wall but it was stopped by Cillessen, while Ezequiel Garay headed over at a corner.Van Gaal sent on Daryl Janmaat for Bruno Martins Indi at half-time, while de Jong soldiered on until the 62nd minute before giving way for Jordy Clasie, who came on to make his first appearance in Brazil. As a steady rain began to fall, the game settled into a disjointed rhythm, with Argentina continuing to look the more threatening side.Enzo Perez, deputising for the injured Angel di Maria, was a steady source of enterprise and he almost teed up Gonzalo Higuain for the opener with a glorious cross that the Napoli man poked into the side-netting.Sabella sent on Rodrigo Palacio and the fit-again Aguero towards the end of normal time, but his side only made it to extra time thanks to a sensational sliding block by Javier Mascherano to deny Robben on the stroke of full-time.Van Gaal had triumphed by bringing Krul on for the penalty shootout against Costa Rica, but this time he turned to striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, who replaced the shot-shy Robin van Persie.Holland belatedly registered a shot on target in the 99th minute, Romero saving from Robben.Palacio and Maxi Rodriguez both squandered chances late in extra time for Argentina, but thanks to Romero, it mattered not.

Football: FIFA suspend Nigeria over NFF sacking

Posted:

RIO DE JANEIRO (AFP) - FIFA on Wednesday suspended the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) with immediate effect over government interference. The decision, in the aftermath of Nigeria's World Cup last 16 loss, came after a court sacked the NFF and the government appointed a sole administrator for the country's football shortly after the Super Eagles returned from Brazil. The FIFA Emergency Committee has decided today to suspend the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) with immediate effect, on account of government interference, a FIFA statement explained.Unless the suspension is lifted Nigeria will not be able to play in the upcoming FIFA Under-20 Women's World Cup scheduled for August 5-24 in Canada.Nigerians Wednesday expressed shock and disappointment over the suspension. The country's U17 team, who are the defending world champions, are also in danger of missing out on the African Junior Championship next year in Niger as they have a qualifying match on July 20 in DR Congo.Former Nigeria coach Christian Chukwu expressed disappointment over the ban saying our football will suffer a lot as this can only take us backwards.Former Lobi Stars and Akwa United coach Justin Tenger said it was a shame that Nigeria had to be told to do the right thing by FIFA.This is the saddest thing ever to happen to Nigerian football. It's too bad for another body to put our house in order for us, when we should organise ourselves better instead of what we are now witnessing.A football stakeholder Aminu Kurfi demanded the resignation of Sports minister Tammy Danagogo for his alleged poor handling of the crisis that has rocked the country's football. We talked to top officials that we are doomed, but they refused to heed our sincere warning and this is where we now find ourselves, he said. The minister, a qualified lawyer, was misguided by those who ought to know better. He should quit on account of his poor handling of this matter.

Formula One: Hamilton bounces back in Silverstone test

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Lewis Hamilton recovered from an early setback to finish fifth fastest on the second day of in-season testing at Silverstone on Wednesday.Hamilton, who won the British Grand Prix at Silverstone at the weekend, missed the majority of the morning's session after spinning his Mercedes on his sixth lap and causing the session to be red flagged. The 2008 world champion came back to complete a total of 47 laps and he set the fifth fastest time of the day, clocking one minute 36.680 seconds. That was more than a second slower than pace-setter Jules Bianchi in his Ferrari, who drove 89 laps and chalked up 1.35.262 on the 3.66-mile track - the quickest time of the session.Hamilton was pleased with the performance of the car during testing and is looking forward to the next race, the German Grand Prix on July 20.It wasn't an easy day today; we had great weather but unfortunately had some problems at the start of the day which meant we lost some track time, he said. The guys did a fantastic job to get the car ready again and we were able to put together a few successful runs.At the end of the day, we were going to do more important runs but the red flag came out.It could have been a lot worse as it could have been raining or we could have even done no laps, but some of the things we've tried in the car feel really positive.I'm really pumped now for the next race in Germany. It's a constant challenge for the team to try to stay ahead and I hope we can continue to do that there.Frenchman Bianchi, who usually drives for Marussia, was standing in for Kimi Raikkonen, who is sitting out testing this week following his crash on the opening lap of the British Grand Prix on Sunday.Bianchi beat Toro Rosso's Daniil Kvyat, who was second fastest in a time of 1.35.544, and McLaren's Kevin Magnussen, who came third in 1.35.593.

Cycling: Boom wins Tour fifth stage, Nibali keeps yellow

ARENBERG PORTE DU HAINAUT (AFP) - Dutch rider Lars Boom won the brutal fifth stage of the Tour de France on Wednesday as British defending champion Chris Froome pulled out of the race after crashing twice.Boom rode away from his rivals after 152.5km from Ypres in Belgium to Arenberg Porte du Hainaut that included 13km of cobblestones over seven different sections. But the big winner of the day was yellow jersey holder Vincenzo Nibali of Italy who came home in third and gained significant time on all his overall rivals. He finished just 17sec behind Boom but more than two minutes ahead of most of his main rivals.Only Australian Richie Porte, now the Team Sky leader in Froome's absence, kept his losses to within two minutes.Two-time former winner Alberto Contador lost 2:37, Alejandro Valverde gave up 2:11 and American Andrew Talansky, the winner of last month's Criterium du Dauphine, rolled in 2:05 behind Nibali. It was an incredible day of numerous crashes but the most dramatic involved the champion and race favourite.Froome had already gone down once on Tuesday and was wearing a splint to protect his injured left wrist. He fell again 40-minutes into Wednesday's stage but when he crashed a second time that day an hour later, it was all over. They hadn't even reached the cobbles yet.He seemed to have injured his right arm and climbed into a Sky team car, his race and defence over.

Oil prices continue slide

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - Global oil prices continued their slide from late-June peaks Wednesday despite a sharper-than-expected drop in US crude inventories. Some analysts credited a low read on inflation in China -- pointing to slow economic growth -- for the fall.US benchmark West Texas Intermediate for August lost ground for the ninth straight session, shedding $1.11 to $102.29 a barrel compared with Tuesday's close.Brent North Sea for delivery in August fell 66 cents to close at $108.28 a barrel in London trade. The US Department of Energy said Wednesday that American crude inventories tumbled 2.4 million barrels in the week ending July 4, more than the 2.0 million barrels analysts expected.Typically a bigger drop in inventories than expected is bullish for crude oil -- but a concern over global growth after lower Chinese inflation figures is trumping the oil report, said CMC Markets Jasper Lawler.A bigger drawdown would perhaps have been needed to stem the tide of selling hitting oil for the past few sessions.Official data showed that Chinese inflation slowed to 2.3 percent in June from a four-month high of 2.5 percent in May, giving authorities further room to stimulate economic growth in the world's top energy consumer. The announcement of lower-than-expected inflation figures for July have highlighted a lingering weakness in the world's second-largest economy, cautioned PVM analyst Tamas Varga.

Euro gains for 3rd day, helped by Fed minutes

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - The euro pushed higher against the dollar for the third straight session Wednesday, helped by Federal Reserve meeting minutes which showed the US central bank still firmly dovish. But the pair remained in a narrow range, as did most major currencies amid continued stability in global rates. The minutes to the Fed's June 17-18 policy meeting contained no surprises, but did confirm that the quantitative easing bond-purchase operations, in place since 2008 to hold interest rates down, will be wound up in October. But on balance they showed the Fed less concerned about inflation and more about high unemployment and slow growth, including drag from slow economies in Europe and Asia. The dollar should have reacted positively to the prospect of QE ending in the beginning of Q4 and it did spike higher initially but 15 minutes after the Fed minutes were released, the dollar reversed course and gave up its gains, said Kathy Lien of BK Asset Management. She tied the greenback's fall on the drop in Treasury yields following the release of the minutes, saying bond traders had expected more bullish signs for interest rates.Even after today's moves, we believe the losses will be limited because at the end of the day, nothing new was revealed in the minutes and the Fed is still crawling towards an eventual tightening of monetary policy. The pound meanwhile was slightly higher ahead of a rate decision Thursday from a two-day Bank of England monetary policy meeting, expected to leave interest rates unchanged.

Vijay ton keeps England at bay

Posted:

NOTTINGHAM (AFP) - Murali Vijays maiden overseas Test hundred took India to 259 for four at stumps on a grinding first day of a five-match series with England at Trent Bridge on Wednesday.Vijay was 122 not out after batting through the whole days more than six hours play, with India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni unbeaten on 50 exactly.Together the pair had put on an unbroken 81 for the fifth wicket.Vijays time spent studying England spearhead James Anderson had clearly been beneficial and the opener also thanked Indias former England coach Duncan Fletcher for his advice.Ive worked a lot with videos of James Anderson, Vijay told Sky Sports. The first 15 minutes are the toughest thing as an opener. I wanted to play straight and late.Duncan Fletcher has helped a lot because he knows how things work in these conditions. We were working for two weeks before we came out here.India, after Dhoni won the toss on a sunny day, overcame the early loss of Shikhar Dhawan to be 106 for one at lunch on a placid pitch. But England then took two wickets for one run to reduce India to 107 for three and the run-rate slowed significantly with Stuart Broad (one for 26 in 19 overs) particularly miserly on his Nottinghamshire home ground.Vijay was into his stride right from the first over, which saw him strike Anderson for three fours in as many balls. But Anderson, who has taken more Test wickets at Trent Bridge than any other bowler, did claim his 50th scalp on the ground when he found Dhawans outside edge and wicketkeeper Matt Prior, passed fit after a minor thigh injury, took an excellent diving left-handed catch in front of England captain Alastair Cook at first slip.Such was Vijays touch, his first fifty featured 44 runs in boundaries. But Anderson and new-ball partner Broad eventually checked Indias progress.Cheteshwar Pujara fell for his lunch score of 38 to a well-set trap when he chipped an Anderson delivery that stopped to silly mid-on, where Ian Bell took a superb one-handed catch diving full-stretch to his right.Pujaras dismissal was also a tactical triumph for Cook, much criticised for his conservative approach in the field during Englands recent run of eight Tests without a win.Rising star Virat Kohli, on one, then carelessly opened the face against Broad and guided the ball low to Bell, now at second slip.England, gaining a measure of reverse swing, restricted India to a mere 18 runs in the first 14 overs after lunch. But with Cook unwilling to deploy part-time off-spinner Moeen Ali at length, Vijay made the most of any opportunities he was given by Englands seam quartet. At tea, India were 177 for three, with Vijay 92 not out and Ajinkya Rahane unbeaten on 32.But Rahane, as happened to Pujara, failed to add to his interval score when he fell in the first over after tea thanks to another smart ploy from Cook.Rahane, unsettled by an earlier short ball, tried to pull Liam Plunkett but only made contact with the toe of the bat, the ball deflecting to Cook, who grabbed the catch at silly point -- not an obvious position for a fast bowler such as Plunkett.Vijay spent 13 balls on 99 before, having demonstrated composure worthy of team mentor and retired India batting great Rahul Dravid, a scampered single off Anderson saw the 30-year-old to his fourth hundred in 23 Tests and first outside India. His first fifty had taken just 68 balls, his second 146.Vijay, however, later advanced down the pitch to drive Ali for six over long-off, while Dhoni upped the tempo with a 64-ball fifty including five fours.Vijay had made 110 when Plunkett appealed for lbw.But England, with the Decision Review System not in use this series because of Indian objections, had to accept Australian umpire Bruce Oxenfords not out decision, which replays suggested would still have stood even under DRS.

Football: Netherlands, Argentina, into extra-time

SAO PAULO (AFP) - The World Cup semi-final between the Netherlands and Argentina went into extra-time on Wednesday, after a goalless 90 regulation minutes in Sao Paulo. After the high drama of Germany's 7-1 mauling of Brazil on Tuesday the second semi-final turned into a prolonged stalemate.Argentina striker Gonzalo Higuain had the best opportunity at a rainy Corinthians Arena but his effort to connect with Enzo Perez's cross landed in the side netting.Four-time world footballer of the year Lionel Messi had the only shot on target, an early freekick thumped through the Dutch wall that keeper Jasper Cillessen stopped. In the 90th minute, Arjen Robben raced into the box with the ball at his feet but Javier Mascherano produced a superb tackle to extinguish the threat. The winner faces Germany in Sunday's final at Rio de Janeiro's Maracana.

MQM kept from national politics through hurdles: Altaf

LONDON (Dunya News) - Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) chief Altaf Hussain has said that MQM made every possible effort to become a truly national party despite many hurdles that were put in its way.In an interview to an international magazine, Altaf Hussain said that the MQM wants to make Pakistan a liberal, progressive and tolerant country. He said that MQM was being barred to play its role at national level because there was no feudal in the party.Earlier, talking to newsmen at Karachi Press club, MQM’s coordination committee member Dr Farooq Sattar said that interviewing party chief Altaf Hussain by an international magazine was expression of confidence in his ideology and leadership. He said that the MQM chief in his interview exposed the politics of the country that was based on corruption and vested interest instead of ideology.Sattar said that the MQM chief in his interview discussed in detail that the country from its inception has suffered under an archaic, mediaeval political system controlled by feudal lords, tribal chiefs, and privileged elite.Altaf Hussain said that only two percent privileged class has always put hurdles in the way of MQM to become a true national party. He said these conspiracies had been hatched against the MQM to halt it from making Pakistan a real democratic and prosperous country.

Brazilians struggling to explain loss to Germany

Posted:

BELO HORIZONTE (AP) - Brazilians are having a difficult time trying to fathom how it all went wrong so quickly against Germany in the World Cup semifinals. With the humiliating 7-1 loss still very raw for Brazil supporters, players struggled to find explanations for the country's worst ever World Cup defeat.Brazil conceded four goals in a seven-minute span and trailed 5-0 at halftime on Tuesday, and never had a chance to mount a comeback at the Mineirao Stadium. The dream of playing a home final at the Maracana was obliterated, and players knew they were going down in history for the wrong reasons at their home World Cup.We are still trying to understand what happened, right back Daniel Alves said. I guess it's football. In six minutes you can be eliminated and that's what happened to us.Germany scored its first five goals by the 29th minute as Brazil's defense self-destructed, shocking the crowd at the Mineirao and everyone else watching on television. It was a tough day, Brazil defensive midfielder Luiz Gustavo said. We started well, with everybody doing what they were supposed to be doing, but then all of a sudden we conceded the goals.Tuesday's result equaled the margin of its previous worst defeat a 6-0 loss to Uruguay in the South American championship in 1920. It was the worst World Cup loss ever in numbers, and probably nearly as heartbreaking as the home defeat in the 1950 tournament, the so-called Maracanazo. It's difficult to explain, Oscar said. I don't know what to say. All we can do is apologize. Nobody expected this.Left back Marcelo added: We were in shock about what happened. We were going through our worst day and they (the Germans) were going through their best day.Although no one was making excuses, Brazil played without star striker Neymar because of an injury and captain Thiago Silva because of a suspension.Silva said it was almost impossible to explain what happened. It wasn't the Brazilian national team that we are used to seeing.Bernard, who took Neymar's spot in the starting lineup, said nothing went our away. It was atypical.Brazil now has to play the third-place match on Saturday in Brasilia against either Argentina or the Netherlands.Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff said she was very, very sad after the loss. Pele said it showed that football is a box of surprises.Nobody in this world expected this result, Pele posted on Twitter, already looking forward to the 2018 tournament. We'll get the sixth title in Russia. Congratulations to Germany. But many of the Brazilian players won't be back in Russia to try to rebound from the historic home defeat. Only seven players will be 30 years or younger in 2018 Marcelo, Luiz Gustavo, Paulinho, Willian, Neymar, Oscar and Bernard. We know this will be remembered for a long time, veteran defender Maicon said.Striker Fred, who struggled the entire tournament and was loudly jeered when he was replaced in the second half on Tuesday, said our lives will be marked by this.

Dilshan shines as Sri Lanka thrash South Africa

Posted:

PALLEKELE (AFP) - Tillakaratne Dilshan starred with both the bat and the ball as Sri Lanka crushed South Africa by 87 runs in their second one-dayer Wednesday to draw the three-match series level at 1-1.Dilshan smashed 86 off 90 balls and also took three wickets for 40 runs to set the stage for a Sri Lankan victory in the day-night match at the Pallekele International Stadium.Fast bowler Lasith Malinga chipped in with a valuable 4-24 as South Africa were bowled out for 180 off 38.1 overs while chasing Sri Lankas 267 all out.In-form opener Hashim Amla fought back brilliantly, making a 102-ball 101, but failed to find support from the other batsmen, only two of whom could manage scores in double figures.Malinga gave Sri Lanka crucial breakthroughs when he sent back opener Quinton de Kock (four) and star batsman Jacques Kallis (one) in his consecutive overs.Kallis, who was out for a second ball duck in the first game, fell to a sharp bouncer from the bowler, edging it straight to Kumar Sangakkara behind the stumps. At the other end, Amla held the innings together, stringing a 75-run stand with skipper AB de Villiers (29) and reaching his 14th ODI century in the process. But de Villers dismissal in the 20th over by Dilshan triggered a collapse that derailed the South African innings and put the hosts in the drivers seat.Earlier, Dilshan, 37, struck nine fours in his quickfire innings after Sri Lanka won the toss and chose to bat.The hosts looked in line for a bigger total but lost their last five wickets for 11 runs, with paceman Ryan McLaren (4-48) accounting for four of these dismissals. The Proteas suffered an early setback when pace spearhead Dale Steyn had to leave the field after sustaining a bruise on his right thumb while bowling his third over. With tests ruling out any fracture, Steyn came on the bat, making 23.Sri Lanka were off to a flying start with Dilshan going after the attack, but the visitors struck at regular intervals to peg back the scoring.Opener Kusal Perera (seven) was the first to go, lobbing the ball tamely to Amla at short mid-wicket off fast bowler Vernon Philander (2-49).Sangakkara, who scored a fine 89 in Sundays match, was out for seven when he tried to pull a short delivery from Morne Morkel but ended up gloving it to the wicket-keeper.Leg-spinner Imran Tahir (2-41) got rid of Lahiru Thirimanne (36) and then off-spinner Jean-Paul Duminy deceived Dilshan with a ball that deflected off the batsmans glove onto the stumps.Jayawardene was given out lbw when he was on six, but the decision was overturned on review. He went on to score a patient 48 off 70 balls and shared a 71-run stand with skipper Angelo Mathews (34) to steady the innings.Ashan Priyanjan provided some late impetus, hitting Morkel for a six and a boundary off consecutive deliveries in a cameo 25-run knock. The third and final game will be played in Hambantota on Sunday.
