Racing: Queen's horse fails drug test

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - A horse owned by Britains Queen Elizabeth II which won one of Englands most prestigious races has failed a drugs test, Buckingham Palace announced Tuesday.Estimate, which lifted the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot in 2013 and came second in this years edition, has tested positive for morphine, a banned substance.A statement by the Queens racing advisor said initial indications were the positive test had resulted from the consumption of a contaminated feed product. The Queen, renowned for her love and knowledge of horse racing, cheered on Estimate -- whose trainer Michael Stoute has been a leading figure on the English turf scene for more than 30 years -- when the now five-year-old filly won at Ascot last year.A statement by John Warren, the Queens Bloodstock and Racing Advisor, said: On Thursday July 17 the British Horseracing Authority (BHA) announced that a number of post-race samples, obtained from recent race meetings, had been found to indicate the presence of morphine, which is a prohibited substance on race days.Five horses, under the care of various trainers, were affected.I can confirm that one of those horses was Estimate, the five year-old filly trained by Sir Michael Stoute and owned by The Queen.Initial indications are that the positive test resulted from the consumption of a contaminated feed product.Sir Michael is working closely with the feed company involved to discover how the product may have become contaminated prior to delivery to his stables. As the BHA investigates this matter, including potential links between the different cases, Sir Michael continues to offer his full co-operation.There will be no further comment until the BHA announces its considered findings. Her Majesty has been informed of the situation.

Football: UEFA shuts PSG stands over abuse of disabled Chelsea fans

Posted:

GENEVA (AFP) - French club Paris Saint-German were ordered by UEFA to close part of their stadium as punishment for their supporters abuse of disabled Chelsea fans during their Champions League quarter-final match in April.UEFA said that it had ordered a one-match closure of sectors 104 and 105 of the Parc des Princes, the clubs home stadium in the French capital. The sanction has been imposed for the discriminatory conduct of some Paris Saint-Germain supporters towards disabled fans of Chelsea, UEFA said.Disabled fans rights campaigners hailed the announcement. We welcome the determined decision taken by UEFA which sends a clear message to all clubs that abuse of disabled fans will not be tolerated, Joyce Cook, head of the Centre for Access to Football in Europe said in a statement emailed to AFP.The sanction applies to the next European club competition match in which PSG play as hosts. The Parisians have an automatic berth in the group stage of this seasons Champions League and therefore go into action in September.During the April 2 first-leg quarter-final -- in which PSG beat the Londoners 3-1 -- a group of disabled Chelsea fans were seated among the home supporters due to a lack of facilities in the visitors stands.- hail of abuse -They were subjected to a hail of abuse, spat on, and pelted with plastic bottles. It seemed like I was sitting in hell and it was something that I had no control over, Chelsea supporter Lisa Hayden, a wheelchair user, recently told the BBC.I felt no-one had our backs: there were 10 of us and thousands of them and I didnt think we were going to get out of there, she added.Chelsea won the April 8 second leg at Stamford Bridge 2-0, ejecting PSG due to the away goals rule.In May, Mike Penning, then Britains disabilities minister, called on UEFA to consider throwing PSG out of this seasons Champions League. He also pointed to the problem of seating for supporters with disabilities, which has likewise been flagged up at several English Premier League clubs.Disabled fans are fans and they shouldnt be treated any differently. They should be sat with their own fans and be able to enjoy the game like everyone else, Penning, now the policing minister, told the BBC at the time.On Tuesday, campaigner Cook said the UEFA decision was a timely wake-up call for football. This was a particularly unpleasant incident with the Chelsea disabled fans abused and threatened by a minority of home fans whom they were confronted by based on being in the wrong place through no fault of their own, she said. This could have happened at a number of European clubs where disabled away fans have no choice but to sit with the opposing home fans, she said. She said it was discrimination to provide disabled fans with a lesser experience at matches, all the more so when it left them vulnerable and subject to abuse purely because they are disabled. The Parc des Princes is one of the stadiums due to hold games at Euro 2016 when France hosts the flagship international tournament.Cook said that significant access improvements were already in the pipeline there.

Cycling: Rogers wins first Tour stage at 10th attempt

BAGNERES-DE-LUCHON (AFP) - Australian Michael Rogers finally earnet his first stage victory in his 10th Tour de France on Tuesday. The three-time world timetrial champion, riding for Tinkoff-Saxo, came home on his own at the end of the mammoth 237.5km 16th stage from Carcassonne to Bagneres-de-Luchon.The wily veteran, who won two stages at the Giro dItalia in May after coming back from a temporary doping suspension, outfoxed four escape companions to finish 9sec ahead of Frenchman Thomas Voeckler, who took second in a sprint finish ahead of Vasil Kiryienka of Belarus.Further behind Italian Vincenzo Nibali held onto his race leaders yellow jersey, 4min 37sec ahead of Alejandro Valverde, as he came home in a small and elite group of his closest rivals. One of the big losers on the day, though, was 23-year-old Frenchman Romain Bardet, who was dropped on the hors category Port de Bales climb and lost 1:50 to his rivals for a podium finish. That promoted 24-year-old compatriot Thibaut Pinot from fourth to third with veteran 37-year-old Jean Christophe Peraud, another Frenchman, moving up from sixth to fourth.Bardet dropped from third to fifth and is now 6:40 off Nibali but, more importantly having started the day 16sec ahead of Pinot, he now trails his compatriot by 1:36.The other big loser amongst the leading pack was American Tejay Van Garderen who was dropped much earlier than Bardet and gave up around 3:30 to drop to more than four minutes off a podium spot.

Astronomers study remote outcrops of faraway galaxy

Posted:

PARIS (AFP) - Astronomers said Tuesday they have examined the remotest parts yet of an elliptical galaxy, Centaurus A, and discovered its starry halo was bigger, more lopsided and richer in heavy elements than expected. The Hubble Space Telescope, a joint project of NASA and the European Space Agency, scanned the outskirts of the giant galaxy from its position in low Earth orbit, using ultra-sensitive onboard cameras. At a distance of over 12 million light years, Centaurus A is nevertheless one of the closer galaxies to Earth.Hubble mapped a region about 450,000 light years of the galaxys length, and about 295,000 light years of its width -- and it still hasnt reached the halos outer edge. These are large distances if you consider that the main visible component of the Milky Way is around 120,000 light years in diameter, said an ESA press statement.Galaxies have a bright, glowing centre surrounded by swirling, spiral arms or a disk-shaped fuzz made up of dust, gas, stars and dark matter, which are in turn surrounded by dim halos of stars.Little is known about these halos because of their faint and spread-out nature. Now Hubble has revealed that Centaurus As halo extends much deeper into space from the galaxys centre than had been believed, and that it has a weird shape. We found more stars scattered in one direction than the other, giving the halo a lopsided shape -- which we hadnt expected, said study co-author Marina Rejkuba of the European Southern Observatory in Garching, Germany.Tracing this much of a galaxys halo gives us surprising insights into galaxy formation, evolution and composition, she added.Using the Hubble data, the research team also found elements heavier than hydrogen and helium in the gas that made up the stars within the halo. The stars in halos of the Milky Way and other nearby spiral galaxies are generally low in heavy elements.

Turkey arrests 100 top police in wire-tapping probe

Posted:

ANKARA (AFP) - Turkish authorities on Tuesday arrested scores of senior police officers on suspicion of illegally eavesdropping on top officials, including Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan.A total of 100 serving and former top police officers were arrested as part of two probes, prosecutors said in a statement. Most of the arrests were in Istanbul but raids were also carried out in the capital Ankara and cities including Izmir and Diyarbakir. The arrests are the latest round in a bitter feud between Erdogan and his former ally Fethullah Gulen, in the wake of a vast corruption scandal that broke late last year implicating the prime minister and his inner circle.Supporters of exiled cleric Gulen in the police force were widely blamed for leaking details of scandals. The latest wave of arrests is set to further inflame political tensions in Turkey as Erdogan attempts to take the presidency in August 10 elections, having been prime minister for more than a decade. Most of the suspects reportedly held key positions in the anti-graft probe against Erdogan, where some of the evidence came from recorded telephone conversations. In the huge early morning operation, police in Istanbul alone raided almost 200 addresses.Among those held were two former heads of the citys elite anti-terror unit, Omer Kose and Yurt Atayun.I surrendered but as you see they put the handcuffs behind my back, Atayun told reporters. It is all political, he said when asked why he was detained. In a show of defiance, the former deputy head of the intelligence department of the Istanbul police, Hayati Basdag, raised his handcuffed fists high above his head in front of the press.- Anti-Gulen probe to widen? -The suspects are accused of espionage, illegal wire-tapping, forging official documents, violation of privacy, fabricating evidence and violating the secrecy of an investigation, the reports said. The public prosecutors office in Istanbul said in a statement that arrest warrants had been issued for 115 suspects and 67 have been detained so far.The inquiry is into a police investigation of an alleged terrorist group called Selam-Tevhid, which prosecutors said was used as a cover to wiretap prominent figures since 2010, including Erdogan, cabinet members, as well as the head of Turkeys National Intelligence Organisation (MIT), Hakan Fidan.Prosecutors said 2,280 people in total -- of whom 251 were the main targets -- had been illegally wiretapped for three years despite a lack of evidence about the formation of a terrorist organisation.Their real aim was espionage, not the states security, they added. In his first reaction to the raids, Erdogan hinted that the anti-Gulen probe would widen. We are currently watching. We will all see what will come out of this, he told reporters at the Turkish parliament.Asked if the drive to purge Gulenists from the state apparatus would be expanded, he replied: It appears so, of course.- Calls for Gulens extradition -Erdogan has accused supporters of Gulen of holding excessive influence in the countrys police and judiciary and of concocting the graft scandal to unseat him ahead of local elections in March. After 11 years in power which has seen his government tame the influence of the once-powerful military, Erdogan has declared a war against Gulen, accusing him of running a parallel state. In a television interview on Monday, Erdogan vowed bitterly that the fight against the Gulen movement would continue non-stop while calling on the United States to extradite the exiled cleric from his base in Pennsylvania.I expect the United States to take a stance on the Gulen issue, Erdogan said.Erdogan faced the worst crisis of his rule after allegations that he and his allies engaged in huge corruption which ranged from bribery to gold smuggling and illicit trade with Iran.It dragged down four ministers and prompted a cabinet shake-up, and posed the most serious challenge to Erdogans government since it came to power in 2002.His Islamic-leaning government has already sacked thousands of police and prosecutors believed to be linked to the movement in the wake of the scandal, and tightened controls over the judiciary and the Internet.Gulen, who left for the US in 1999 to escape charges of anti-secular activities by the government at the time, has denied being behind the graft allegations against Erdogan.

New launch date set for ISS delivery vessel: Arianespace

PARIS (AFP) - A robot ship will be launched from Kourou, French Guiana, after a five-day delay on July 29 to deliver provisions to the International Space Station, space transport firm Arianespace said Tuesday. The new date follows the completion of complimentary verifications and control measures of the Ariane 5 ES launcher that will bear the vessel aloft, it said in a statement. The launch will take place at 8:44 pm Kourou time (2344 GMT).The Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV) dubbed Georges Lemaitre is the last of five supply ships Europe was scheduled to provide to the ISS.The size of a double-decker bus, the cylindrical ATV modules use onboard motors and starlight navigation to rendezvous and dock with the ISS in Earth orbit. They bring food, water, fuel, oxygen, experiments and treats for the six crew members, and provide much-appreciated additional living space. At the end of a mission usually lasting several months, they undock from the ISS and burn up in the atmosphere in a controlled de-orbit.The fifth ship, which will carry the heaviest cargo yet with over 2.6 tonnes (6,700 pounds) of dry goods, 850 litres of potable water and three tonnes of fuel, is named after the Belgian cosmologist who fathered the concept of the Big Bang that created the Universe. After the last ATV flight, the ISS will be resupplied by Russias Progress freighter and fledgling US private contractors.

India woman beaten to death on suspicion of witchcraft: police

Posted:

PATNA (AFP) - Villagers in a rural part of eastern India have beaten to death a woman whom they accused of being a witch, police said Tuesday. The womans husband said 14 villagers carried out the attack in Bihar, one of Indias most underdeveloped states, according to a local officer. The woman was beaten to death by her co-villagers for allegedly practicing witchcraft, said Sudhir Kumar Singh, police superintendent of East Champaran district where the attack took place. He said the villagers had gathered to settle a land dispute with the womans family when they instead attacked her after accusing her of bringing illness and bad luck on the village through witchcraft. She later died of her injuries in hospital. It seems that it was a case of a land dispute and the woman was made a victim to take revenge (over the dispute). Police are still probing into it, Singh said. But to date no arrests have taken place because all the named accused absconded after the incident, he said.Women are sometimes accused of being witches to settle disputes or grievances in remote and rural areas that remain deeply superstitious. In some cases women are stripped naked as punishment, burnt or driven from their homes and killed. In March this year a couple was beaten to death by their neighbours for allegedly practicing witchcraft in a village in Gaya district of Bihar. Three people were arrested.

FIFA's Blatter raises alarm over Gaza crisis

Posted:

GENEVA (AFP) - FIFA chief Sepp Blatter on Tuesday raised the alarm about the spiralling Gaza crisis as he held talks with the head of the Palestinian Football Association.I am very much concerned with this situation in the region. We are heartbroken to learn that people from the football community have been killed. FIFA and I personally deplore this situation and any form of violence, Blatter said.We are united in hoping for peace in this region and across the world, the global games chief added.PFA president Jibril Rajub met Blatter at FIFAs headquarters on the sidelines of a visit to Switzerland to attend a session of the International Olympic Committee.Rajub also heads the Palestinian Olympic Committee.I appreciate the commitment of the FIFA President to develop and invest in football in Palestine, despite the difficulties we face, Rajub said in a statement. We believe football should remain a tool to build bridges between people. I am very saddened by the loss of Palestinian life in the current conflict but I am still optimistic that peace will prevail, he said.He said his dream was to see the Palestinians achieve an independent, sovereign state alongside our neighbours, including the State of Israel, according to international legitimacy. In September last year, FIFA brokered a watershed face-to-face meeting between Rajub and his Israel Football Association opposite number Avi Luzon. The goal of the football-themed peace process was to try to end sharply political disputes over Israeli entry restrictions, such as that on players from Arab nations which led to the delay of an international youth tournament hosted by the Palestinians in 2013.The Palestinians also have repeatedly charged that Israeli policies make it hard for players, coaches, referees, officials and equipment to get in and out, smothering the games development in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.Israel meanwhile points to the abuse of football facilities by Palestinian militants to fire rockets at its cities and warns that sport has been used as a tool to disseminate anti-Israeli propaganda.Under the deal, the two associations named liaison officers to try to stem disputes. While the Palestinians lack broad international recognition for their would-be state, their football association joined FIFA in 1998.Israel joined in 1929 when it was still under British control, 19 years before independence. Most Middle East nations are members of the Asian Football Confederation. But politics have made Israels road rocky in the international game -- they played in Asia until 1974, then Oceania, before joining UEFA in 1991.

Eurozone public debt rises sharply: Eurostat

Posted:

BRUSSELS (AFP) - Eurozean public debt -- the accumulated total of government budget deficits and borrowing -- rose sharply earlier this year, reversing a downtrend when the economic crisis eased, official figures showed on Tuesday. The 28 European Union states are supposed to keep total public debt below the equivalent of 60 percent of annual economic output, while annual budget deficits must not exceed 3.0 percent. For years however these limits have been breached and total debt increased sharply during the crisis as governments borrowed even more to bolster their economies. The result is that total debt in the 18 eurozone countries rose to 93.9 percent of gross domestic product in the first three months of 2014, up from 92.7 percent in the fourth quarter 2013.In the full 28-member EU, total debt rose to 88 percent from 87.2 percent, the Eurostat statistics agency said.Debt had fallen in both the third and fourth quarters of last year as the economy recovered slowly from a deep recession, boosting government revenues as spending was kept under control. On that basis, some countries such as twice-bailed out Greece and struggling France, have called for an easing in the austerity policies adopted to tame the crisis, but Tuesdays figures may give pause for thought in doing so.Among those with the highest total debt levels were Greece on 174.1 percent of annual output, Italy 135.6 percent and Portugal 132.9 percent, levels which many analysts believe make full repayment an unlikely prospect. The best performers were Estonia with 10 percent and Bulgaria, 20.3 percent.

Britain's Prince Harry voices hatred of Twitter

LONDON (AFP) - Britains Prince Harry has spoken of his hatred for the micro-blogging website Twitter due to its role in the invasion of his privacy, newspapers reported Tuesday.Harry was speaking to students at an event promoting the upcoming inaugural Invictus Games, a Paralympics-style multi-sports event for wounded service personnel. The prince, fourth in line to the throne, is behind the creation of the Games, which will take place from September 10 to 14 in London, and was on hand to present certificates to the schoolchildren marking the completion of their social media training. The 29-year-old encouraged the youngsters to get involved with the Games across social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter -- but confessed that he would not be joining them online.I would love to tweet about things I care about, on a regular basis -- if people wanted to hear about it, that would be good, Harry said. The issue for myself and my family, put quite simply, is that its very hard for me to tweet about the Invictus Games and tweet about something that means a lot to me, whereas I at the same time really quite hate Twitter (due to) the invasion of privacy.I think you all know what Im talking about. The army captains remarks were interpreted as a reference to the way people post pictures and details of his movements whenever he goes out in public.Pictures of him frolicking naked with a blonde woman at a party in Las Vegas also did the rounds on Twitter.Harry did reveal that he has had a taste of social networking in the past, saying: Im not on social media; I used to be.Newspapers reported that Harry had a Facebook page under the pseudonym Spike Wells, which suddenly disappeared after the Las Vegas furore. The Invictus Games will see wounded troops from 14 nations compete in a variety of events at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in east London, which hosted the 2012 London Games.

Tennis: Haase calms his nerves in winning Gstaad start

GSTAAD (AFP) - Last years finalist Robin Haase had to fight through an extended case of first-match nerves to advance over Aleksandr Nedovyesov 6-4, 6-7 (3/7), 6-3 on another rainy day at the Swiss Open on Tuesday. The Dutchman, who lost the final a year ago on the Bernese alpine clay to Russian Mikhail Youzhny, failed to close out his win in two sets against the 99th-ranked Nedovyesov who beat him in the spring at Casablanca.Haase led a set and 5-4 when he was broken, with Kazakh Nedovyesov winning a tiebreaker to take the contest into a deciding set.The seventh seed found his game just in time, though, breaking for 3-1 to earn the edge for eventual victory.Haase admitted that his case of early-match nerves lasted much longer than expected as he finally advanced in just under two hours in a contest played in mid-teens temperatures and occasional drizzle. Its normal to have some nerves but they usually go away in the first few games, said world number 51 Haase, winner of two career titles. In the first and second sets I was playing with nerves. It was only in the third set that I relaxed for the first time. I was feeling a lot of pressure, I had finalist points to defend from last year, and Ive not been playing that well on clay.Ive had some good matches but I lost them. I can only look ahead to the next round. There are no certain (easy) matches any more.Haase, whose two titles came on clay in Kitzbuehel in 2011 and 2012, won his 12th match of the season and improved to 5-1 at Gstaad.Two-time champion Thomaz Bellucci began his quest for a hat-trick as he beat Austrian qualifier Gerald Melzer, brother of Jurgen Melzer, 6-3, 6-4 in an hour and a quarter.Kenny De Schepper of France beat Italys Filippo Volandri 6-3, 7-6 (7/3) while Blaz Rola of Slovenia stopped Brazilian Fabiano De Paula 6-4, 6-4.
