UN Security Council to hold emergency meeting on Ukraine

Posted:

UNITED NATIONS (AFP) - The UN Security Council will hold an emergency meeting Friday to discuss the crash of a Malaysian airliner in eastern Ukraine. The urgent talks will begin at 10:00 am (1400 GMT), said the Rwandan chair of the 15-member council. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is calling for a full, transparent and international investigation of the crash of Malaysian Airlines flight MH17 in rebel-held eastern Ukraine.US officials said the plane carrying nearly 300 people from Amsterdam en route to Kuala Lumpur was shot down by a surface-to-air missile but it was unclear who fired the weapon.Britain, which requested the urgent talks at the Security Council, is calling for a UN-led investigation.

Malaysian jet shot down by surface-to-air missile: US

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - A Malaysian airliner with 298 people on board was shot down over Ukraine by a surface-to-air missile Thursday but it was unclear who fired the weapon, US officials said.Intelligence analysts are reviewing data to determine whether the missile was launched by pro-Moscow separatists in Ukraine, Russian troops across the border or Ukrainian government forces, two US officials told AFP on condition of anonymity. We are working through all the analysis, said one official. But there was little doubt that the plane was struck by a surface-to-air missile. That's what we strongly believe, the official said.At an event in Detroit, Vice President Joe Biden said the US-made Boeing 777 was intentionally blown out of the sky.The aircraft was apparently... and I say apparently because we don't have all the details yet... shot down. Not an accident. Blown out of the sky, Biden said.Soon after the plane went down, Ukrainian leaders accused pro-Russian separatists of bringing down the airliner in a terrorist attack. Speculation soon focused on the possibility that the airliner was shot down inadvertently, possibly by pro-Russian forces believing they were targeting a Ukrainian army transport plane. The aircraft was reportedly flying at an altitude of more than 30,000 feet (10 kilometers), putting it well within range of Russian-made Buk missiles that are in the arsenals of both Ukrainian and Russian forces.Widely used, the Buk surface-to-air missiles are mobile systems installed on wheeled or tracked vehicles and are designed to strike aircraft, cruise missiles, helicopters and other targets. Before the conflict in Ukraine began, Kiev government forces had about six to eight batteries of the missile, according to military analysts.Russia has many more at its disposal, as well as more sophisticated missiles, though it remains unclear if they are deployed near Ukraine. Buk missiles are complicated to operate, unlike shoulder-launched weapons, and it would require outside help or extensive training for pro-Moscow separatists in Ukraine to be operating the missile batteries, said IHS Jane's senior defense analyst Edward Hunt. They're normally not seen within insurgent or separatist forces for the very reason they're quite manpower intensive, training intensive and spare parts intensive, Hunt said.Buk weapons require several people to operate, including a radar operator coordinating with those launching the missiles from a common post vehicle.Ukrainian air traffic controllers lost contact with Malaysian Airlines flight MH17 at 1415 GMT, about four hours into its flight and some 30 miles (50 kilometers) from the Russia-Ukraine border. The plane had taken off from Amsterdam en route to Kuala Lumpur. There were no signs of survivors at the crash site in eastern Ukraine, with horrific scenes of carnage.

Golf: Mighty McIlroy storms into Open lead

Posted:

HOYLAKE (AFP) - Rory McIlroy shot a flawless six-under 66 to lead by one stroke after the first round of the British Open on Thursday on a day of low scoring which also saw fit-again Tiger Woods find some form. The 25-year-old Irishman's opening salvo was the second best round he has carded at the Open, bettered only by the course record of 63 he shot in the first round at St Andrews four years ago.On that occasion he came back to the Old Course the next day and slumped to a horrendous 80 that wrecked his title hopes.McIlroy finished a gripping, sun-drenched day at Royal Liverpool one shot clear of rising star Matteo Manassero, who had seven birdies en route to a 67, the 21-year-old Italian's best Open score in four appearances. Two more Italians - the Molinari brothers Edoardo and Francesco - were a further stroke back at four under 68, level with Americans Jim Furyk and Brooks Koepka, Sergio Garcia of Spain and world number one Adam Scott of Australia. In what was a top class leaderboard, nine players were camped on three-under 69 including Woods, who was playing in just his second tournament since undergoing back surgery in late March. The 38-year-old American, who won at Hoylake the last time the Open was held there in 2006, bogeyed his first two holes, but three straight birdies from the 11th saw him move to two under and put a visible spring in his step as he closed out a morale-boosting round.McIlroy looked full of confidence from the start in a young guns grouping with Jordan Spieth of the United States and Hideki Matsuyama of Japan. He was three under after just six holes and further birdies came at 10, 12 and 16 as he quickly stamped his credentials as tournament favourite. The two-time major winner could have gone even lower had he not hit his second from the rough into a tough greenside pot bunker at the par-five last.Anytime you shoot 66 at the Open Championship, you're going to be pleased, said McIlroy, who missed the cut at Muirfield last year.We had perfect scoring conditions out there this morning. There wasn't much wind early on. The wind started to pick up a little bit on the back nine. But there was plenty of opportunities to make birdies. I was able to take a few of them. Another great start and looking forward to getting back out there tomorrow.Manassero, tipped for golfing greatness since he won the British Amateur title in 2009 at the age of 16 said that he was happy to fly the Italian flag at Hoylake with the Molinari brothers. So very good for Italian golf. We got off to a fast start, all of us. And when you've got three, you don't have only one, there is more chances they're going to stay up until Sunday, he said. And it's going to be wonderful to have a few Italians up there on Sunday afternoon. It's going to be fun, if there is.Defending champion Phil Mickelson struggled to get going as he came in with a 74, top home hope Justin Rose settled for a 72 and US Open champion Martin Kaymer a 73.The champion of two years ago, Ernie Els, had a nightmare day after hitting a young spectator with his first tee shot. The South African looked upset on the way to a soul-destroying 79.Woods, playing his first major of the year, was the focus of attention early on in front of a packed gallery. The player who has dominated world golf over the last 17 years came into Hoylake at a crucial juncture in his stupendous career. The latest in a succession of swing-stress related injuries over the last few years saw him revert to back surgery in late March to relieve a pain that left him at times unable even to get out of bed.Woods, 18 months shy of his 40th birthday, says that for the first time in years he is pain free and ready to go as he once again hones in on his lifelong obsession of matching and finally surpassing the all-time major record of 18 wins held by Jack Nicklaus since 1986.Many though questioned the wisdom of his decision to return to action so quickly after his back surgery raising question marks over his physical and mental capacities at top tournament level. Those doubts looked reasonable after his faltering start, but the triple birdie run on the back nine indicated otherwise and Woods looked energised as he came off the 18th green.I figured out how to manage my way around the golf course after an awful start, but got back to even par on the turn, he said.I know what it's like to win here but the golf course is completely different to when I won in 2006, it's much lusher. The weather forecast will change things over the next few days though.

Tennis: Zverev follows in Nadal footsteps in Hamburg

HAMBURG (AFP) - Alexander Zverev on Thursday became the first 17-year-old to reach the quarter-finals of an ATP 500-level tournament since Rafael Nadal in 2004 when he made the Hamburg last-eight.The former top junior from Germany, who is ranked 285 in the world, defeated experienced 11th seed Santiago Giraldo 6-4, 7-6 (8/6) having already beaten Russian fifth seed Mikhail Youzhny in the previous round. He's a tough player and a really tough competitor, said Zverev. He got the break when I was serving at 5-4 and I just had to focus and play my game. Luckily, I got through in two sets.Nadal was the last 17-year-old to make the last eight of an ATP 500 tournament at Dubai in 2004.On Friday, Zverev will meet compatriot Tobias Kamke where he will bid to become the first 17-year-old player to reach the semi-finals or better at a tour-level event since Marin Cilic at Gstaad in 2006.

Football: Former United star Ferdinand joins QPR

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand signed for Premier League new-boys QPR on a free transfer Thursday and revealed he had turned down more lucrative offers in order to return to London.Ferdinand agreed a one-year deal with the Hoops, ending his search for a new club following his release by United when his contract expired last month. The 35-year-old was keen to move back to London, where he was born, and he has decided to rejoin QPR boss Harry Redknapp, who handed him his professional debut when the pair worked together at West Ham.Ferdinand revealed the prospect of turning out for a club he admired as a boy also persuaded him to move to Loftus Road, where his brother Anton and cousin Les both played with distinction.I used to sit in the stands, my dad used bring me here as a young boy. There are great memories for me here and for my family, Ferdinand told QPR's website.Anton had nothing but good things to say about QPR and I watched Les (Ferdinand) here as a boy, with the likes of Ray Wilkins, Clive Wilson, David Bardsley and Alan McDonald.Ferdinand, who won six Premier League titles and the 2008 Champions League during his 12-year spell with United, is Redknapp's first close-season signing after guiding QPR back into the Premier League via the Championship play-offs.And the former England centre-back admitted he had turned down several more lucrative offers from across the world to sign for QPR.I spoke to Harry and (owner) Tony Fernandes at length. I think they both looked me in the eye and knew that I still have something to offer -- that I had a genuine desire to come here and play football, Ferdinand added.I had a lot of offers from all over the world -- some in places with a better climate than here. But the draw for me was to play in the Premier League and back here where it all started. It's not about money. I had loads of more lucrative offers available to me.I still feel I've got something to offer and I'm excited about helping this club cement its place in the Premier League.Redknapp has no doubts Ferdinand can still be an effective performer at the highest level despite some underwhelming displays for United last season.Rio's a fantastic player and a great professional. I'm delighted we've been able to bring him here, Redknapp said.I signed Rio as a 14 year-old. He was class on the field and off the field then, and he's continued in that manner throughout his career.During his time at Manchester United, he was the best defender in Europe, if not the world. To bring him to QPR - when he's still got so much to offer in terms of his quality, class, experience and know-how - is a remarkable coup for the club.Redknapp appears to have found a central defensive partner for Ferdinand after agreeing a fee with Cardiff to sign their England international Steven Caulker. We've agreed a fee for Steven Caulker, who I like very much, he told Sky Sports News. I had him at Tottenham as a player and he's done very well.I think Rio will be a big influence on him. I think for Steven it will be the best education he could ever have in his life to play with Rio.

Kristoff wins Tour de France stage

Posted:

SAINT-ETIENNE (AP) - In a solo show of opportunistic racing, Norway's Alexander Kristoff has won the 12th stage of the Tour de France in a sprint as Italy's Vincenzo Nibali kept the yellow jersey for a 10th day overnight. After hitching a ride behind the back wheel of Italian sprinter Matteo Trentin, Kristoff powered out of the barrelling pack and beat Peter Sagan of Slovakia, who was second, by nearly a bike length, while Arnaud Demare of France was third. The pack overtook a pair of breakaway riders with less than seven kilometres to go.Kristoff, who won the Milan-San Remo race this year, pointed his fingers skyward and shouted as he crossed the line - pretty much without any of his Katusha teammates. Sagan's Cannondale team and Giant-Shimano took turns leading the pack at the end, but Kristoff timed his burst perfectly.''I won, finally, and I am really happy,'' Kristoff said of his first Tour stage win, adding he had been second in two previous sprints.''It was time to win.''In Norway, there was a lot of pressure on me: I am the only Norwegian this year''Kristoff paced himself without two big rivals: Giant-Shimano rider Marcel Kittel, who has won three stages, was dropped earlier in the ride along four small and medium-sized climbs, while German countryman Andre Greipel, who won stage six, crashed within the last few kilometres.''I went at just the right time,'' said Kristoff, adding he had no idea the two Germans were out of contention for the stage win.''I was just thinking about myself.'' The mostly flat 185.5km course from Bourg-en-Bresse to Saint-Etienne in southeastern France was well suited for a possible sprint finish. The top standings didn't change. Nibali leads Richie Porte of Australia by 2 minutes, 23 seconds, and Alejandro Valverde of Spain was third, 2:47 back. Nibali was looking to become the first Italian to win the Tour since the late Marco Pantani in 1998.American rider Andrew Talansky pulled out before the stage due to severe back pain from previous crashes. The Garmin-Sharp leader who won the Criterium du Dauphine last month rode for several hours with excruciating back pain when he finished last on the 11th stage. The pack now faces two days in the Alps - which were getting relatively short shrift this year - even if both stages featured uphill finishes that were likely to shake up the top standings. The relatively long stage 13 would also put riders' legs under the most strain so far. The 197.5km trek began in Saint-Etienne and would crescendo: It first covered a mid-sized climb, then the Category 1 Palaquit pass, and finally an 18km ascent to the Alpine village of Chamrousse - one of cycling's hardest climbs.Nibali, however, said his Astana team would try to manage the race tonight, before what he saw as a greater challenge a day later.Tonight, ''attacks can happen, but the Tour de France doesn't end tomorrow.'' The race has 10 more days.

Athletics: Gay, Gatlin in Monaco sprint showdown

Posted:

MONTE CARLO (AFP) - American sprinters Tyson Gay and Justin Gatlin bring their rivalry to the Monaco Diamond League meeting on Friday when they clash in the 200m.Despite the withdrawal of Jamaica's world silver medallist Warren Weir, who leads this year's world lists with 19.82sec but is now concentrating on the impending Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Gay and Gatlin provide the star quality.Gay returned to action earlier this month at Lausanne after a one-year doping ban but he was blitzed by former Olympic champion Gatlin who clocked 9.80sec in the 100m.Former world champion Gay, 31, then won his second outing over 100m in the Paris suburb of Montreuil 10 days ago.The American was banned in June 2013 after testing positive for a banned anabolic steroid in two out-of-competition tests. His ban, which was reduced from two years by the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) due to Gay's cooperation, ended on June 23.The 200m will also feature Alonso Edward of Panama, who is the second-fastest man over the distance this season with a best of 19.84.America's Curtis Mitchell, the world championship bronze medallist from last year, also lines up in the 200m as does France's European 100m champion Christophe Lemaitre, and Nickel Ashmeade of Jamaica, who has a 2014 best of 19.95.In the 110m hurdles, Olympic champion and world record holder Aries Merritt looks for a resurgence of form after a 2013 decimated by injury.Merritt's best time this year is a modest 13.78sec -- way outside his world record of 12.80sec -- and he is not expecting a radical change of luck on Friday. After running in London this Sunday, he will return to the United States to undergo a four-week training block. The 110m hurdles is a fierce, traumatic discipline. Liu Xiang is injured and Dayron Robles is no longer at the high level he once was, said Merritt.Liu and Robles were Merritt's predecessors as the world's fastest men over the hurdles. In the 1500m, Kenya's Asbel Kiprop, the former Olympic and two-time world champion, has his sights set on breaking Hicham El Guerrouj's world record. The 24-year-old, who has dominated the four-lap race since 2008, is planning to attack El Guerrouj's 16-year-old world mark of 3:26.00 in Monaco. This is something I have planned since last year. That's why I have decided to forgo all other competitions and I am now focusing on building my strength and technique for Monaco, the 2008 Olympic champion told AFP.Fellow Kenyan David Rudisha won the 800m in a blistering time of 1min 43.34sec at the Glasgow Grand Prix last weekend.Beset by knee problems last year, Rudisha showed he is back to his best as he made his first appearance in Britain since breaking the world record on his way to winning Olympic gold at London 2012.He will look to continue his form in Monaco before heading back to Glasgow for the Commonwealth Games later this month.

Oil prices jump after Malaysian jet crash in Ukraine

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - Global oil prices pushed higher Thursday after a Malaysian jetliner crashed in rebel-held eastern Ukraine, sparking concerns of an escalation in the crisis in the former Soviet state. The US benchmark futures contract, West Texas Intermediate for August delivery, shot up $1.99 to close at $103.19 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.Brent North Sea for delivery in September, in the contract's first day of trade, settled with a gain of 72 cents at $107.89 a barrel in London.Markets were unnerved by news that Malaysia Airlines Flight 17, carrying 295 people from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, crashed near the rebel-held town of Shaktarsk in the Donetsk region.Ukraine's government and pro-Russia insurgents traded blame for the disaster, with Kiev saying the plane was shot down in a terrorist attack.Comments attributed to a rebel commander suggested his men may have downed the passenger jet by mistake, believing it was a Ukrainian army transport plane. The news sent European and US stock markets tumbling and investors fleeing for the traditional safe haven of bonds. The Malaysia plane crash came a day after the US and the European Union strengthened sanctions against Moscow, with US President Barack Obama criticizing Russia for its continued provocations in Ukraine. The Russians responded angrily to the sanctions, calling the latest punishments blackmail and threatening retaliation. The plane crash is really bad news, much more serious than the sanctions announced yesterday by Washington, said Gregori Volokhine, president of Meeschaert Capital Markets. This calls into question the security of air routes in this part of the world and other sensitive regions like the Middle East, Volokhine said.Air travel is very important for the economy, he added. This is very destabilizing for travelers and investors.

Dollar stabilizes after Malaysian plane crash jitters

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - The dollar stabilized against the euro Thursday, trimming earlier gains spurred by the crash of a Malaysian jetliner in war-torn Ukraine.Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 crashed in pro-Russia rebel-held territory in eastern Ukraine near the Russian border. The Boeing 777, with 298 people aboard, was flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur.Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko called the disaster a terrorist act. US officials said it was shot down by a surface-to-air missile but it was unclear who fired the weapon. The crash news further heightened geopolitical concerns of an escalation in the months-long conflict in Ukraine, a day after the United States imposed tough new sanctions on Russia over its alleged support of separatist rebels in Ukraine. In the oil-rich Middle East, meanwhile, Israel launched a ground operation in the Gaza Strip, saying the decision came following 10 days of Hamas attacks and after repeated rejections of offers to de-escalate the situation. The uncertainty sent US and European stocks tumbling as investors sought safer havens in bonds and gold. The dollar was pushed up to a one-month high against the euro as the shared currency fell to $1.3517, but the greenback later slipped back to within a hair of Thursday's level. Kathy Lien of BK Asset Management said the dollar suffered in part from the decline in the yields for US Treasury bonds, which move inversely to prices.US Treasury yields are at their lowest levels in more than six weeks, and that stripped some of the safe-haven status out of the US dollar, she said.

Defiant Duminy leads South Africa past 400

Posted:

GALLE (Agencies) - JP Duminy led a defiant South Africa tail with a century to put to the tourists in a strong position in the first Test against Sri Lanka.Duminy (100 not out) hit 10 fours in his impressive knock to guide South Africa to their second highest total on Sri Lankan soil as the visitors declared on 455-9 on day two in Galle.Wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock (51) reached his first Test 50 in only his second outing in the five-day format, while Vernon Philander (27) and Morne Morkel (22) also made valuable contributions down the order. It was a day of toil for the Sri Lanka attack who, minus the talents of pace bowler Shaminda Eranga -- sidelined with a hand injury sustained while fielding on the first day -- struggled on a largely lifeless pitch. The hosts were able to mount a solid start to their reply before the close of play, Upul Tharanga (20 not out) showing aggression with the bat as Sri Lanka finished on 30-0.Having reduced South Africa to 268-5 at the end of the first day, Sri Lanka will have been hopeful of restricting Hashim Amla's men to a relatively small total. But, although Dale Steyn (3) was soon bowled by Suranga Lakmal (3-75), De Kock did his best to temper those expectations by scoring his maiden half-century.Any prospect of a promising partnership between De Kock and Duminy was ended just four balls after that milestone, though, as the former edged a wonderful turning delivery from Dilruwan Perera (4-162) into the hands of Mahela Jayawardene.Yet Sri Lanka were frustrated by the tail, Duminy displaying superb resistance to put on stands of 75 and 66 with Philander and Morkel respectively.Duminy capped off a composed display with a sweep for a single to mark the second hundred of the South Africa innings - and only his fourth in Tests - following Dean Elgar's effort on the first day. Morkel was dismissed by Perera with the very next ball, bringing about South Africa's declaration but - after Tharanga's early show of intent - Sri Lanka should be confident of mounting a competitive response.

Rahane Leads India rally against England

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Ajinkya Rahane led India's recovery with a superb hundred after they collapsed on the first day of the second Test against England at Lord's on Thursday.India, after losing the toss on a seaming pitch, were in dire straits at 145 for seven. But thanks to Rahane's 103 -- his second century in just his seventh Test -- and his eighth-wicket stand of 90 with Bhuvneshwar Kumar, India reached stumps on 290 for nine.Every hundred is special, be it at Wellington or at Lord's but yes it is special to do this at Lord's, Rahane told reporters. The 26-year-old, who came in at 86 for three, added: This wicket was different. Until the end the ball was doing something. It was good to get this hundred on this pitch.England seamer James Anderson put the looming possibility of a Test ban behind him by taking four for 55 in 22 overs. But England, without a win in nine previous Tests, failed to press home their advantage, with wicketkeeper Matt Prior enduring another torrid day as he dropped two catches and conceded 17 byes.It was not as bad for England as seeing Kumar and Mohammed Shami put on 111 for the tenth wicket during last week's drawn first Test at Trent Bridge, but it was worrying all the same.At stumps, Shami was 14 not out and Ishant Sharma 12 not out.We were probably a little bit too wide, admitted England all-rounder Ben Stokes. When the ball moves like it did today, you could say we should have bowled fuller.Anderson's performance was just the response England were looking for after they were stunned by India's decision to charge him on Tuesday under the International Cricket Council's code of conduct for an altercation with all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja at Trent Bridge. Wednesday saw England retaliate with a charge against Jadeja and now both players could be banned from matches during the remainder of this five-Test series.Anderson struck in Thursday's third over, his second, when a ball that pitched outside leg stump and cut away sharply saw left-hander Shikhar Dhawan caught low down at third slip by Gary Ballance.Anderson's 230th Test wicket in England surpassed the record of fast bowling great Fred Trueman.Murali Vijay -- who made a hundred at Trent Bridge -- was dropped on nought by a diving Prior off Stuart Broad. But he fell for 24 when, aiming legside, he was well caught by Ballance off Liam Plunkett. Then off the last bell before lunch Prior, who has struggled with Achilles and thigh injuries this season, dropped Virat Kohli off part-time off-spinner Moeen Ali.However, Kohli had only added five runs to his lunch score of 20 when Prior, diving to his right, held an edge off Anderson.Anderson's 70th Test wicket at Lord's was a new ground record, topping the 69 taken by Ian Botham.Stokes's excellent off-cutter then bowled Cheteshwar Pujara for 28.Before this match, India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni had spoken of wanting his side to be exposed to typically English conditions after a slow, low, 'sub-continental' pitch in Nottingham. But Dhoni couldn't pass his own 'exam' as he fell for one, edging Broad to Prior as the fast-medium bowler took his 250th Test wicket.Jadeja's role in the Anderson flare-up saw him booed by some spectators as he walked out to bat. Anderson, though, didn't get the chance to bowl at Jadeja on Thursday, with Ali having the left-hander lbw for three.Kumar again played more like a batsman than a tailender. But two overs after England took the new ball, he was bowled for 36 by a Broad delivery that kept low.Rahane though leg-glanced Anderson for four and next ball drove him straight back over his head for six to go to 89, before a four though covers off the paceman saw him to a 151-ball century, including 15 boundaries and a six.But three balls later Rahane's chipped drive off Anderson saw him caught left-handed by the bowler.
