Germany demolishes Brazil 7-1 to reach the World Cup Final

Posted:

Belo Horizonte (Web Desk) First there was disbelief. Then there were tears. Brazil's World Cup dream was ended in humiliating fashion after it was obliterated 7-1 in the semifinals by Germany. This a nation which had not lost a competitive home game since 1975, Brazil conceded five times in 18 minutes during the first half as Germany ran riot.Thomas Muller's 11th minute strike gave Germany the lead before four goals in six minutes destroyed Brazil's hopes of winning the tournament on home soil.Miroslav Klose became the World Cup's all-time leading scorer with 16 when he netted his side's second, firing home the rebound after Julio Cesar had saved his initial effortA minute later it was 3-0. Toni Kroos thumping home from the edge of the penalty area as Brazil imploded. With Brazil floored, Germany's ruthless streak came to the fore with Kroos adding his second after a one-two with Sami Khedira. And it was Khedira who made it five, finishing coolly after neat interplay with Mesut Ozil to leave Luis Felipe Scolari's men decimated. Booed off at the interval, there was little to cheer about in the second half with Andre Schurrle's 69th minute strike rubbing salt in Brazilian wounds.

LONDON (Web Desk) – India is going to play the five Test match series against England in England after 55 years.India was brutally defeated by England 55 years ago when India played 5 Test match series against England in England.England outclassed India in every department and white washed the series.Indian batsmen failed to show resistance against bowlers like Fred Trueman and Brian Statham. Even Indian star batsman Chandu Borde failed completely as he hurt his finger while facing Fred Trueman. After the end of series some English critics were of the view that the team India is not worthy to play five Test match series.Even in the era of Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid, India was not considered. Now after 55 years England invited India to play the five Test match series and the interesting fact is no Indian player of current team played the series of five Test matches against any side even not the captain MS Dhoni.

Israel strikes on Gaza kill 15, wound at least 100

GAZA CITY (AFP) - Israeli strikes on Gaza Tuesday killed 15 people and wounded around 100, the emergency services said, as the military began an aerial campaign against militants in the Strip. In the worst strike, a missile slammed into a house in the southern city of Khan Yunis after people had reportedly formed a human shield to protect it, killing seven people.Emergency services spokesman Ashraf al-Qudra told AFP two teenagers were among the dead and that another 25 people were wounded.Witnesses said an Israeli drone fired a warning flare, prompting relatives and neighbours to gather at the house as a human shield and that, shortly afterwards, an F-16 warplane fired a missile that levelled the building. In response, Hamas said all Israelis would be potential targets for retaliation. The Khan Yunis massacre... of children is a horrendous war crime, and all Israelis have now become legitimate targets for the resistance, spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri said on Facebook.Shortly afterwards, two Palestinians were killed in an air strike in Shejaiya, east of Gaza City, Qudra said without elaborating.Earlier, three people were killed when a missile struck a car in the Daraj neighbourhood in the centre of Gaza City, he said, correcting an earlier toll of four fatalities.Hamas's Al-Aqsa TV showed gruesome images of charred body parts being loaded onto ambulance stretchers.Family members said all of them were Hamas militants, identifying one as Mohammed Shaaban, 32, a senior commander in Hamas's armed wing, the Ezzedine Al-Qassam Brigades. He was also head of the group's naval operations, they said.Israel's army confirmed targeting Shaaban, describing him as a senior Hamas operative. In a separate strike near Nusseirat refugee camp in central Gaza, another man was killed, with witnesses telling AFP he was also a Hamas militant. The deaths came hours after Israel announced the start of Operation Protective Edge, a campaign aimed at stamping out rocket fire on southern Israel and destroying Hamas's military infrastructure.

Operation Zarb-e-Azb is a great service to the nation: Tahirul Qadri

LAHORE: (Dunya News) Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) Chief Dr. Tahirul Qadri has said today (Tuesday) that Army has done a great service to the nation by launching this Operation Zarb-e-Azb against the terrorists. While talking at the Minhajul Quran International (MQI) Secretariat in Model Town, Lahore, Dr. Qadri remarked that those who are still suggesting talks with the Taliban are unknowingly playing in the extremists’ hands. He said talking about talks with the Taliban after the launch of operation was equivalent to causing Fitna (chaos) in the society.Tahirul Qadri said that the political parties asking for an end to operation at this time did not want to see the Armed Forces gaining ground in the Taliban controlled areas.Tahirul Qadri said that Pak Army deserved applause on conducting the Operation.A consignment of 14 trucks loaded with relief goods for the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) were dispatched on this occasion. Three trucks containing 36,000 packets for 12,000 families departed from Lahore. These packets are comprised of daily use goods and medicines. While talking to the media, Dr. Tahirul qadri said that people of Federally Administered Areas (FATA) could not be left alone at this hour of need. He congratulated the Pakistan Army for launching the Operation Zarb-e-Azb and making inroads deep into the badlands that were previously controlled by the terrorists.Chairman Pakistan Awami Tehreek criticized the politicians saying that it was due to their failure in coping with the terrorism that the Army had to intervene. He said that the nation is indebted to the Armed Forces of the country for launching this operation against the Taliban. While announcing the relief work that Minhajul Quran International was carrying out, Dr. Tahirul Qadri said that most of the people living in the North Waziristan Agency (NWA) were peace-loving citizens of Pakistan. “95% of the Waziristan residents are peaceful citizens who were made a hostage by a handful of extremists”, Dr. Qadri said.It is pertinent to mention here that Tahirul Qadri takes pride in being the first person to have issued a Fatwa on terrorism and suicide bombings. This Fatwa, released in March 2010 from London, declared suicide bombings and terrorism as outright un-Islamic and went as far as declaring it to be kufr (infidelity) under Islamic Law.

Tennis: After Wimbledon win, Djokovic to tie the knot

Posted:

PODGORICA (AFP) - After winning his second Wimbledon title, world number one Novak Djokovic was expected in the tiny Adriatic republic of Montenegro on Tuesday where he will tie the knot.Djokovic and longtime girlfriend Jelena Ristic are due to wed in the luxurious Adriatic resort of Sveti Stefan on Wednesday in a closed ceremony, local media reported.Asked by AFP, a Djokovic family spokesperson said only that a statement would be sent to the media, without revealing any details. The couple, who are expecting their first child later this year, reportedly wanted to have a private ceremony only with the closest friends and family present.AFP reporters at the scene said Sveti Stefan, as well as the nearby upmarket Kraljicina beach -- where the wedding banquet would be held -- were closed off for public by discreet but efficient security, to prevent possible intruders or paparazzi.Belgrade daily Blic reported that employees at the Sveti Stefan resort have signed a written pledge not to disclose any details relating to the wedding. They are also forbidden from bringing any cameras or mobile phones to the islet, connected with the mainland by a stony strip which gives it the impression of being a peninsula.Montenegrin media reported that Djokovic's coaches Boris Becker and Marjan Vajda, as well as several tennis players -- among them Maria Sharapova and Andy Murray -- would attend the wedding.Djokovic, 27, who dedicated his Wimbledon title to his future wife and a child, said he would now close a tennis chapter for a while.A lot of great moments are ahead of me: marriage, becoming a father in a few months... I am going to enjoy spending time with my family and my future wife, Djokovic told reporters. The rocky islet of Sveti Stefan, which lies on 12,400 square meters (133,000 square feet), is one of the most luxurious resorts on the Adriatic coast.A fortified village built in the 15th century to defend the mainland from a possible intrusion by Turkish soldiers, it became a fishermen's islet after the fall of the Ottoman empire. In post-World War II communist Yugoslavia, the villagers were moved to the mainland and the islet became an exclusive resort for celebrity guests of then Yugoslav leader Josip Broz Tito. Many international film stars, among them Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Barton, Orson Welles and Kirk Douglas, frequented the resort in the 1960s and 1970s.It came under the world spotlight again with the 1992 match between former World Chess Champions Bobby Fischer and Boris Spassky, the first appearance by the seclusive US player after two decades.Fischer, who won the match over the Russian master and his main rival, defied the US and international sanctions imposed on then Yugoslavia for its role in the 1990s Balkan wars. The resort is now managed by international chain Aman Resorts.

Dhoni optimistic India can banish away-day blues

Posted:

NOTTINGHAM (AFP) - India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni believes his largely youthful side can put their miserable away record behind them as they prepare for their first five-Test series in England in 55 years.Dhonis men havent won a Test outside of India since they beat the the West Indies at Kingston, Jamaica, in June 2011 -- a run now stretching to more than three years and spanning 14 matches. But wicketkeeper Dhoni, speaking at Trent Bridge where the first Test against England starts on Wednesday, insisted he had seen signs of progress on the teams two most recent tours, of South Africa and New Zealand. There have been a lot of changes in the Indian side in the last one-and-half or close to two years, Dhoni said Tuesday. If you talk about the last two Test series that we played abroad -- in South Africa and New Zealand -- the performance of our team was really good.Though we lost both the series, we were definitely in a position to win the series, the wicketkeeper-batsman added, one of only three players in the tour squad along with seamer Ishant Sharma and back-up batsman Gautam Gambhir to have played a Test in England. If I compare between the first Test we played in South Africa and the last Test we played in New Zealand there has been considerable improvement. For India, one challenge this series, as it was when they were thrashed 4-0 on their last visit to England three years ago, is taking 20 wickets a match at reasonable cost, with the strength of the current side its top-order batting.Like many teams, India -- whove won only three Test series in England, in 1971, 1986 and 2007 -- are searching for a seam-bowling all-rounder.Someone who could fit the bill in the current squad is the uncapped Stuart Binny, whose father Roger, himself an all-rounder, was one of the stars of Indias 1986 tour of England. We have always talked about not having that genuine seaming all-rounder because of that we have to play with three fast bowlers and one spinner and if the pitch is not turning then a lot of effort, work needs to be shared by the fast bowlers, Dhoni explained.Stuart is someone who can bowl a bit and at the same time bat as well. If we can give him enough chance and groom him, then he can be someone who can do that job for us in the next six months. He wont be as good as someone like (South Africas Jacques) Kallis but he can be someone who can bowl that 10 overs and bat a bit, he has got the talent.Meanwhile Dhoni said he welcomed the input of now retired India great Rahul Dravid, the captain of the 2007 side that triumphed in England. We want a mentor with the side, who can talk about his past experiences over here, explained Dhoni. Its all about him interacting with the youngsters, and they are also comfortable talking to him.

PTI suffering from N-league phobia: Abid Sher Ali

MULTAN (Web Desk) - Minister of State for Water and Power Abid Sher Ali has said that PTI chief Imran Khan’s attitude is still undemocratic despite his government’s failure in KPK. Talking to the media during his visit to MEPCO Headquarter on Tuesday, Abid Sher Ali said that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf was suffering from N-league phobia.Abid Sher Ali said AML chief Sheikh Rasheed wanted to derail democratic system and people like Sheikh Rasheed should be in the jail.He said loadshedding in the timings of Sehr and Iftar are because of the fault in transmission line which will be overcome very soon.Earlier, Abid Sher Ali had said there would be no loadshedding in the country during Iftar, Sehar and Taraweeh timings.Abid said the government would bring power generation up to 85 per cent of the total installed capacity in the country to reduce loadshedding during Ramazan. He stated that there would be equal distribution of electricity in the country during Ramazan. The state minister said Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif was taking keen interest to resolve electricity crisis.

Defiant Cook eager for India turnaround

Posted:

NOTTINGHAM (AFP) - Alastair Cook admitted Tuesday that recent results had not been good enough but insisted there was no question of him resigning the England captaincy if things went badly against India.England havent won in eight Tests, a sequence stretching back to their 74-run victory against Australia at Chester-le-Street in last Augusts home Ashes series.Meanwhile it is more than a year since opening batsman Cook scored the last of his England record 25 Test hundreds. And with England recently going down 1-0 at home to Sri Lanka after a 100-run defeat in the second Test at Headingley, Cooks tactics have come in for severe criticism.Cook, however, retains the support of the England hierarchy.Indeed former coach Andy Flower, still involved in the England and Wales Cricket Board set-up, said last weekend: He is an outstanding cricketer and we, the English public, should be proud of having Alastair Cook as one of our own, leading the Test side. This is a young man, a 29-year-old man, who has done some extraordinary things for his country...and hes got so much more left to give.Cook said Tuesday he was thick-skinned enough to cope with the flak that had come his way as he surveyed Englands prospects ahead of the first of a five-Test series against India starting at Nottinghams Trent Bridge ground on Wednesday.I think you have to be determined and stick to your guns. We all know you are judged on results and results have not been good enough. If we turn it round and win games of cricket things will be different.- Huge honour -===============Asked if he could survive as captain were England to lose the series with India -- whove only enjoyed three Test campaign victories on English soil in their history, Cook said: I am not in charge of anything like that. I concentrate on doing the job which Ive been asked to do.Im incredibly proud to be England captain. I have thrown everything into it and continue to. Until that day the selectors decide Im not the right man for the job, I will continue to.It is a huge honour to do this and I can go to sleep knowing that Ive thrown everything Ive got into it.The Essex left-hander added: I just need to go back to scoring runs. There is always pressure, isnt there? It doesnt matter what stage of your career you are in, you always have it.Thats the beauty of the job -- to see whether you can handle it or not.India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni is perhaps under more pressure than any other skipper of a leading Test nation, given he is responsible for carrying the hopes of millions of fans in the cricket-crazy nation. You know that, when you or the team starts doing well then they (the media) dont ask these questions to the individual or to the coaches, Dhoni, also speaking at Trent Bridge, said Tuesday. So its a tough phase each and every cricketer has to face. But I feel it will only improve him (Cook) as a person and a player. With five Tests packed into a congested schedule of six weeks, Cook said it was vital England hit the ground running. It is very important. We havent won a Test match for a while now, and wed love to get back to those winning ways.

Football: Brazil plot Germany demise without Neymar, Silva

BELO HORIZONTE (AFP) - Brazil and Germany collide in a heavyweight clash of continental superpowers here Tuesday as the World Cup semi-finals get under way.The prize for the winner is a place in Sunday's final where they will meet either Argentina or the Netherlands, who face off in another South America-Europe semi-final duel on Tuesday.Brazil face Germany missing star striker Neymar and captain Thiago Silva after an appeal to FIFA to rescind his suspension fell on deaf ears on Monday. Two hundred million Brazilians may not agree with him but German coach Joachim Loew suggests this twin misfortune may help rather than hinder the hosts.Setbacks often set free additional forces, Loew said.Nobody should believe that our task is made easier by the loss of Neymar, quite the opposite. And Thiago Silva's suspension shows the depth of the Selecao's squad.(Brazil coach Luiz) Felipe Scolari can now use a player like (Bayern Munich centre-back) Dante, so I can't see there being a loss of quality.Scolari has urged Brazil to use Neymar's injury blow as motivation to reach the title.I think the additional motivation we must have in every match is going up another step and getting closer to our objective of the final, Scolari said. The way Neymar spoke to the players made them understand that he had done his share and now we need to do our share.Myself, the other players, all the Brazilian people. This match is very important, it could take us to the final. We are playing for our country, it is everything we imagined and dreamed of, and also for Neymar.Silva's captain's armband will be worn by Paris Saint-Germain's 50 million ($85 million) new acquisition, David Luiz. The former Chelsea defender and his colleagues, who have the hopes of an expectant nation resting heavily on their shoulders, or Germany will have to wait 24 hours to discover the identity of the team they'll meet in Sunday's climax at the Maracana.Curiously, the two countries' paths have only crossed once before at a World Cup - in the 2002 final with Brazil prevailing 2-0.Wednesday's second semi-final sees the Dutch facing Lionel Messi's Argentina in Sao Paulo - a repeat of the 1978 final won by the Argentines 3-1 in extra-time.Like Brazil, Argentina go into battle with sizeable personnel problems of their own. While four-time World Footballer of the Year Messi reports for duty, Argentina must contest their first semi-final since 1990 without Angel di Maria. The Real Madrid forward's absence following injury in the quarter-final win over Belgium is an enormous blow to Alejandro Sabella's team.On the plus side Argentina say that striker Sergio Aguero is fit to return after a leg muscle problem ruled the Manchester City striker out of the last 16 defeat of Switzerland.Dismissed as 'ordinary' by Belgium coach Marc Wilmots after Saturday's quarter-final Messi-inspired Argentina have now won their first five matches at a World Cup finals for the first time.Sabella has hailed the Barcelona legend's contribution in Brazil, declaring: He's the water in the desert. He finds solutions when we think there aren't any.Messi is about to find out whether he is up to solving the complex riddle posed by master tactician Louis van Gaal's highflying Dutch side.

Mahatma Gandhi to stand with foes at British parliament

Posted:

NEW DELHI (AFP) - Mahatma Gandhi, who led efforts to end British rule in India and was repeatedly imprisoned, is to be honoured with a statue outside Britains parliament that will stand alongside tributes to several colonial-era enemies.British finance minister George Osborne, on a trip to New Delhi to meet the new government of Narendra Modi, wrote on Twitter that Britain would honour his memory with a statue in Parliament Square.Indias independence hero will rub shoulders with his one-time nemesis, British wartime prime minister Winston Churchill, who once said he hoped Gandhi would die from fasting and famously derided him as a half-naked fakir. The Gandhi statue will also stand alongside one of Jan Smuts, a leader of South Africa in the early 20th century who favoured racial segregation.Gandhi was jailed by Smutss government for campaigning for the rights of downtrodden Indians, a forerunner to his more famous non-violent campaign at home that would strike fear into successive British governments until independence in 1947.I hope this new memorial will be a lasting and fitting tribute to his memory in Britain, and a permanent monument to our friendship with India, Osborne said in a statement.Parliament Square is opposite the Palace of Westminster which houses the British legislature and contains statues of statesmen and other historical figures, including South Africas Nelson Mandela.Osborne and Foreign Secretary William Hague were meeting Modi later Tuesday to push for trade and access for British companies to the Indian market.Hague, who visited a memorial to Gandhi in New Delhi on Tuesday, described him as a towering inspiration and a source of strength.Hague later met his Indian counterpart Sushma Swaraj. The (EMA) external affairs minister began (the meeting) by thanking them for this gracious gift, said foreign ministry spokesman Syed Akbaruddin. The Gandhi statue fits a pattern of Britain reviving -- and appearing to atone for -- its colonial past in India during visits by senior figures. In February last year Prime Minister David Cameron visited the site of a 1919 massacre in which troops under British control gunned down hundreds of unarmed protesters. He described the massacre at Jallianwala Bagh in the city of Amritsar as shameful but stopped short of a public apology.Reaction to the news of the Gandhi statue was mixed.Commentator and marketing executive Suhel Seth wrote on Twitter that with this announcement youll win the hearts of every Indian (and) also help those all over the world be inspired.Journalist Kabir Taneja joked that Churchills statue may develop a frown when Gandhis statue is placed alongside him.European governments including Britain and the United States boycotted Modi for a decade over deadly religious riots in 2002 while he was running his home state of Gujarat. But they are now trying to make up for lost time following his election triumph in May, with Russias deputy prime minister, the French foreign minister and US Senator John McCain all visiting in recent weeks.

Greece raises 1.25b euros with a sale of 6-month treasury bills

ATHENS (AFP) - Greece on Tuesday raised 1.25 billion euros ($1.7 billion) with a sale of six-month treasury bills, paying slightly lower interest in an oversubscribed sale.Total bids reached 3.322 billion euros and the amount finally accepted was 1.25 billion euros, the debt agency said in a statement. The interest rate slipped to 2.05 percent from 2.15 percent in an equivalent sale in June, the agency said. The bond issue came amid expectations of a new bid to raise funds later this year, following a successful market test with a five-year bond sale in April.Local media have reported that Greece, bailed out by the European Union and the International Monetary Fund in 2010, will next issue a three-year or a seven-year bond.In April, the finance ministry had said that it was processing and preparing a programme for the possibility of a new recourse to markets for a sum of 3.0-6.0 billion euros in the next 12 months. No further details have been given since.

India state sacks hundreds of teachers over fake degrees

Posted:

PATNA (AFP) - Indias Bihar state has sacked 1,100 school teachers in the last five years for faking their own education qualifications, an official said Tuesday.Bihars government has launched an investigation into the eastern states primary and secondary teachers to check the authenticity of their degrees, the official said.We have removed about 1,100 school teachers in last five years in the state for using forged degrees to get jobs, senior state education official R.S. Singh told AFP.Our investigation is on to verify degrees of more school teachers. It is a continuous process after recruitment of teachers, Singh said. The sackings underscore the immense problems facing the school system in India where teachers are underpaid and overworked, and tens of millions of children struggle to receive an adequate education. The investigation was launched in the wake of a massive recruitment drive by the government in Bihar, one of Indias most impoverished and underdeveloped states, that started in 2006 in a bid to improve its schools. The recruitment drive saw almost 250,000 people given teaching, assistant teaching and other jobs, but ultimately led to complaints about incompetence, officials told AFP.Several officials said recruited teachers were required to have a graduate degree, but verification of their certificates only started after their appointment.Bihars education minister Brishen Patel told AFP the verification process has now been stepped up.I have already directed concerned officials to speed up to verify degrees of all 2.5 lakh (250,000) contractual school teachers, Patel told AFP.Singh said his education department has filed complaints with police against some of those teachers sacked, along with village council heads who had originally helped with the recruitment process.Bihar, with a population of almost 100 million, has some of the poorest literacy rates in India.Last year 23 children died after eating a free lunch contaminated with pesticide at an impoverished village school in the state.Standards of education in rural India have declined almost every year since 2009 despite huge government investment, a survey by Indian education research group Pratham has found.
