Posted:

GLASGOW (AFP) - Australia's swim stars sent their country top of the Commonwealth Games medals table on Saturday while Jamaican sprint sensation Usain Bolt sprinkled a little stardust on Glasgow. The women's 4x200m freestyle relay team took Australia's gold haul to 11 from a possible 21 after three days at the Tollcross International Swimming Centre as they smashed the previous Games record by nearly four seconds. There was an Australian one-two in the women's 200m breaststroke as Taylor McKeown sealed gold ahead of teammate Sally Hunter before Emily Seebohm set a new Games record in retaining her 100m backstroke title.Daniel Fox got another Australian gold in the men's para-sport 200m freestyle to add to his new world record time from qualifying.South Africa's Chad le Clos solidified his status as the world's best 200m butterfly swimmer as he retained his title but he almost came a cropper before he even got into the pool after twisting his ankle when slipping off a bus as he arrived back at the athletes' village on Friday. However, once he was in the water he sped clear of the field in the final 50 metres.Last night I slipped off the bus, so I was a bit worried, my ankle was a bit swollen, said Le Clos. This morning it was quite bad in the heats so I was a bit worried, but we had 10 hours to strap it up and needle it a little bit so thanks to the physios. The most impressive individual performance in the pool was by England's Fran Halsall as she broke two Games records in winning the women's 50m freestyle and qualifying fastest for Sunday's 50m butterfly final. There was more joy for England as 19-year-old Adam Peaty beat Olympic champion Cameron van der Burgh of South Africa into second in the men's 100m breaststroke. In track cycling, Australia took their medals tally to 15 with Annette Edmondson winning the women's scratch race and Scott Sunderland landing the men's 1km time trial. The 22-year-old Edmondson, who was silver medallist in the individual pursuit, matched brother Alex's tally of team gold and individual pursuit silver.Australian duo Jason Niblett and Kieran Modra missed out in the men's Para Sprint B tandem as Scotland's Neil Fachie and Craig Maclean claimed a second gold of the Games with a 2-1 victory.New Zealand shone in the men's 40km points race with Thomas Scully claiming gold and Aaron Gate winning bronze. Peter Kennaugh claimed Isle of Man's first medal of the Games, finishing second. The action on the third day of the Games was dominated in the afternoon by the arrival of Bolt who will race in the 4x100m relay heats in what will be his first outing of an injury-hit season.Yes I'm here to run. I'll be running, definitely, said Bolt, the world record holder and Olympic champion in the 100m and 200m.Canada's Patricia Bezzoubenko completed a five-gold haul in rhythmic gymnastics.Bezzoubenko had already won two golds in the team and all-around events and she added three more on Saturday in the clubs, ball and hoop individual disciplines. The one gold that escaped her grasp was in the ribbon which went to Francesca Jones giving Wales their first gold medal of the Games.Australian shooter Daniel Repacholi won the men's 10m air pistol but the toast of the town in that event was third-placed Mick Gault of England who at 60 won a record-equalling 18th Commonwealth Games medal.Job done, finished, don't care anymore. I got the record and I can just relax now, said Gault. In weightlifting, England's Zoe Smith claimed the women's 58kg while Malaysia's Mohammed Hafifi Mansor took gold in the men's 69kg category. On the final day of judo, Scotland took three of the five golds thanks to Euan Burton in the men's -100kg, Royal Marine Christopher Sherrington in the 100kg and Sarah Adlington in the women's 78kg.Burton's wife Gemma Gibbons, who represents England, was a silver medallist in the women's -78kg.Four-time rugby sevens champions New Zealand remained on track for an unprecedented fifth title by winning their three pool games. However, Scotland gave them a wake-up call in a narrow 17-14 encounter.Women's world number one squash star Nicol David dropped her first game of the tournament but made it safely through to the semi-finals by beating England's Jenny Duncalf.Singapore's women will face Malaysia in the final of the team table tennis on Sunday despite losing a match for the first time since 2002 in their 3-1 win over India.

He avenged a quarter-final loss to Sock at Newport a fortnight ago.Isner now awaits the winner of Saturday's second semi-final between Germany's Benjamin Becker and Israeli Dudi Sela, who dispatched ninth-seeded American Sam Querrey and fourth-seeded Canadian Vasek Pospisil on his way to the semi-finals.

Golf: Furyk takes three-shot lead at Canadian Open

Posted:

MONTREAL (AFP) - Jim Furyk closed in on a third Canadian Open crown on Saturday, firing a five-under 65 for a three-shot, third-round lead in the US PGA Tour event.Furyk had five birdies and no bogeys on the par-70 Royal Montreal Golf Club's Blue Course for a 54-hole total of 15-under par 195.He was three strokes clear of South African Tim Clark, who played his way into contention on 198 with a six-under 64 that included four birdies and an eagle two at the par-four second hole.Clark opened with a birdie at the first, then holed out from the fairway at the second. You dream of a start like that, and after that I continued to play some pretty solid golf, Clark said. I was struggling a little bit with my ball striking at the start of the year, then I found it a few months ago ... and now finally the putts are starting to go.American Kyle Stanley was alone in third place after a 68 for 200, with compatriot Jamie Lovemark a further stroke back on 201 after signing for a 67.Graham DeLaet was the top Canadian, carding an even par 70 to join a group sharing fifth place on 202, alongside Americans Joe Durant, Scott Brown and Tim Petrovic -- who shared the overnight lead with Furyk.DeLaet is trying to end a 60-year victory drought for Canadian golfers in their home open.Furyk, coming off a fourth-placed finish at the British Open at Hoylake last week, is seeking his first PGA Tour title since 2010.The 44-year-old owns 16 career titles, including Canadian Open triumphs at Hamilton in 2006 and Angus Glen in 2007.Sunday's final round will get off to an early start due to the threat of thunderstorms.Players will start from two tees in groups of three, organizers said, in hopes of completing the round.

Formula One: Rosberg on pole for Hungarian Grand Prix

Posted:

BUDAPEST (AFP) - Nico Rosberg had mixed feelings again on Saturday when he claimed his sixth pole of the season for Sunday's Hungarian Grand Prix after Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton's car burst into flames on his opening lap.The world championship leader took full advantage of Hamilton's bad luck and admitted he felt less than ecstatic at his success and would have preferred to have competed against his main title rival. The 29-year-old German, who leads Hamilton by 14 points in their duel for the drivers' title, cashed in after the luckless Briton's car burst into flames in the opening minutes of a dramatic qualifying session. It's a pity for the team and for me, said Rosberg. Again it's reliability and, also, I would prefer to be battling with Lewis and have the maximum adrenaline rush and not be like this... It's not the same.I am not so happy and not ecstatic about it.Rosberg clocked a best lap of one minute and 22.715 seconds to claim his sixth pole of the year and the 10th of his career in an hour that saw intense heat, at the start, followed by dark clouds and rain in the final minutes. He added: Q3 was a big challenge. The track was changing all the time at the beginning I was the first one into the first corner. It was very difficult to judge. It was very wet.So, I took it easy and I managed to avoid crashing. It was massively difficult and unpredictable. And then it was drying and it was much easier and I managed to nail it with my last lap.Reading the weather conditions in advance, Rosberg was first car out in Q3 and ran wide at Turn One shortly before Danish rookie Kevin Magnussen flew off and into the barriers at the same place. That caused red flags and the session was halted for five minutes, resuming in damp, but drying conditions as the hot sunshine resumed - a scenario that saw a series of drivers in serious contention for pole.Vettel clocked a best lap of 1:23.201 that put him clear at the top in the final seconds, but Rosberg responded to outpace him by 0.486 seconds to secure the prime starting position.Finn Valtteri Bottas was third for Williams ahead of Australian Daniel Ricciardo in the second Red Bull, two-time champion Spaniard Fernando Alonso of Ferrari and Brazilian Felipe Massa, sixth for Williams.Vettel said: I think the nature of the track here suits us better, there are less straights and historically we have always had a competitive car around here.It is nice to be a little bit closer to Nico, but his lap still gave him a bigger gap at the end than we had hoped for...Bottas said: I think it is a little bit of a surprise for me to be here, but the team has worked hard and the upgrades have worked well. It is a good day for us.Briton Jenson Button, twice a winner in Hungary, in wet conditions, was seventh for McLaren ahead of Frenchman Jean-Eric Vergne of Toro Rosso, German Nico Hulkenberg of Force India and Magnussen. We'll have to replace the engine and gearbox, but with that penalty it's a good thing (for a gearbox change), said Hamilton. I can't go any further back. There's a lot going through my mind, but I just have to try to turn it into positives until tomorrow. I think it's getting to the point beyond bad luck - it's something else. We just need to do better.Earlier on a day of less-stifling heat than Friday, with a track temperature of a relatively modest 46 degrees Celsius, Hamilton was the second man eliminated in Q1, his car blazing from a first lap fuel leak just after Venezuelan Pastor Maldonado had idled to a halt in his Lotus.

Cycling: Martin wins Tour time trial, Nibali confirms victory

Posted:

PERIGUEUX (AFP) - Three-time world time trial champion Tony Martin won the 20th stage 54km individual race against the clock at the Tour de France on Saturday.Vincenzo Nibali finished fourth on the stage to ensure he will win the Tour after Sunday's final stage finish on the Champs Elysees in Paris. On a great day for the French, Jean-Christophe Peraud took seventh on the stage to finish second overall while compatriot Thibaut Pinot ended up third and also on the podium.Dutch time trial champion Tom Dumoulin was second on the stage at 1min 39sec of the irrepressible Martin, with Czech Jan Barta third at 1:47.Martin, who finished in 1hr 06min 21sec, was always expected to win this and he didn't disappoint. But behind him the true drama was seeing who would join Nibali on the final podium.Pinot started the day second but was only 13sec ahead of Peraud and 15sec ahead of Spanish time trial champion Alejandro Valverde. But already by the first time check it was obvious Valverde wasn't having a good day as he had lost 43sec to Pinot and more than a minute to Peraud.Pinot was supposed to be the weakest of the three in the race against the clock but he put in a stunning performance to finish 12th on the stage and secure third place overall.Peraud, 37, had a scare after 33km when he punctured but it didn't stop him and by the end he had finished 44sec quicker than Pinot to claim second stop. But there was disappointment for another Frenchman, Romain Bardet, who lost fifth place by 2sec to American Tejay Van Garderen after puncturing like his AG2R teammate Peraud.

First Pakistani team of mountaineers summit K2 peak

Posted:

ISLAMABAD (AFP) - The first-ever team of Pakistani climbers have reached the top of the world's second tallest mountain, K2, to mark 60 years since it was first scaled.Six members reached the summit at 02:22 am PST today, Sarwar Ali, a high altitude guide of the Nazir Sabir Expeditions, a local expedition company in regular contact with the climbers told AFP.Amjad Ayub, president of Pakistan Tour Operators Association(PATO), confirmed the summit, which was made without using supplementary oxygen. Yes Six mountaineers from Gilgit-Baltistan have scaled K2 at 2:22 am today (09:22 pm Friday), he told AFP.The six climbers are Hassan Jan, Ali Durani, Rahmat Ullah Baig, Ghulam Mehdi, Ali and Muhammad Sadiq. Three Italians are also part of the group.Unlike Mount Everest that has been summited by nearly 3,500 young and old climbers, K2 has been a much lonelier place with roughly 300 making to its tops since it was first captured 60 years ago. Many climbers have died on the descent. The 8,611-meter K2 is located on the border between Baltistan, in the Gilgit-Baltistan region of northern Pakistan, and the Taxkorgan Tajik Autonomous County of Xinjiang, China. It was the country's first team effort, although individual Pakistani climbers have previously climbed the peak. The expedition is sponsored by the local Gilgit-Baltistan government and the Italian organisation Ev-k2CNR to mark the 60th anniversary of the first ascent of K2 by Italian climbers on July 31, 1954.Sadia Danish, the information minister for Gilgit-Baltistan who also heads the tourism department of the region, termed the summit as the first step of revival of tourism in the area. The local tourism industry had been badly affected by last year's killings on Nanga Parbat base camp, the success will help in reviving it she told AFP.Those tourists who had omitted Gilgit-Baltistan from their destination because of last year's killings will now add it back she said. Miss Danish said the local government was doing a number of efforts to boost tourism in the region.Last year, K2 denied all efforts by climbers to go beyond Camp III due to extreme snow conditions. The mountain claimed the lives of a mountaineer and his son from New Zeeland - Denali and Marty Schmidt - when an avalanche hit them at the camp last year.

Party workers have been falsely projected as terrorists: MQM

Posted:

KARACHI (Dunya News) – Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) coordination (Raabta) committee said in a furious statement that MQM party workers were being misrepresented as terrorists and target killers whereas the Karachi targeted operation was not producing favorable results due to biased proceedings.MQM said in a joint statement that its party workers were being arrested from mosques, homes and marketplaces even during the blessed month of Ramazan, adding that party workers were being subjected to inhumane torture within government’s custody while being arrested under false pretexts.MQM Rabta committee further grieved that during the past week, dozens of party workers and political affiliates have been arrested from several areas of Karachi, of which several were still missing. The committee said that amongst the arrested, two workers were handed over to the police and two workers were under remand in jail whereas there is still no information regarding the whereabouts of the remaining workers.MQM coordination committee stated that party workers were being subjected to character assassination after being arrested whilst being projected as terrorists and target killers. The committee said that workers were being arrested instead of focusing on targeting banned outfits like Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and terrorists who commit atrocious crimes, and that the police is arresting innocent party workers. The committee further said that the Karachi targeted operation has been unable to produce favorable results because of such biased proceedings. The MQM coordination committee put forward the demand of halting the arrest of party affiliates as well as party workers whilst freeing already captured workers, adding that workers should be produced before the court of law instead of being subjected to extra judicial captivity in the name of investigation.

Football: Man United's Mata warms to Van Gaal tactics

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Manchester United playmaker Juan Mata on Saturday gave his seal of approval to the new tactical system introduced by incoming manager Louis van Gaal.Having set United out in a 3-4-1-2 formation for their opening pre-season friendly against Los Angeles Galaxy on Wednesday, with Mata playing in support of the two strikers, Van Gaal saw his new charges stroll to a 7-0 win.The 62-year-old coach used a similar formation with the Netherlands at the World Cup, where he guided his country to a third-place finish, and Mata believes it could bring out the best in him.If I play behind the two strikers it's a good position, the Spain international told BBC Sport.I can look for the ball, I can try to assist or score, so I will try my best. I will try to score as much as I can and try to help the team from that position. If I have to play on the wing I will try my best as well, but I feel comfortable in this role.Only a handful of sides deployed a three-man defence in the Premier League last season, and Mata feels it could give United an edge.It can be very dangerous for the opponent, he said. It is difficult for them to play against us in this formation.Van Gaal has made a strong impression since succeeding the sacked David Moyes, upbraiding his players during public training sessions and openly criticising the club's heavy pre-season schedule.Mata revealed that the Dutchman is also making his presence felt in the changing room by forcing all of the club's players to communicate only in English. We only speak in English, said the former Chelsea player. He says we have to speak in English.Mata added: He is very good, on and off the pitch. He is a good man and a great manager. He has a lot of experience, he has won trophies in previous teams too, so it's a good chance for me to learn from him and for us to improve as a team.He is demanding. He is very honest, straight, speaks with everyone to his face. I think this is good, a perfect way to do it: saying what you think about the players in front of them.

Football: Mashaba appointed to coach South Africa

Posted:

SOWETO (AFP) - Ephraim 'Shakes' Mashaba was named coach of South Africa Saturday in succession to sacked Gordon Igesund.National youth coach Mashaba was not present at the announcement in Soweto as he is in Mali with the under-20 squad.I am thrilled to be given this opportunity and will not disappoint the people of South Africa, he replied when informed by telephone of his appointment.South African Football Association (SAFA) president Danny Jordaan urged the public and media to be patient during a media conference. We ask for patience from the public and media -- let us watch 'Shakes' grow into this job.His appointment was a unanimous decision by the national executive committee. The humble 63-year-old former Orlando Pirates defender is a former caretaker coach and permanent coach of Bafana Bafana (The Boys). He briefly took the reins in 1992 after the initial post-apartheid coach Stanley 'Screamer' Tshabalala was fired for hitting a journalist.Mashaba assumed permanent control in 2002 only to be fired after a row with officials despite plotting a win over Ivory Coast that qualified the team for the 2004 Africa Cup of Nations.Mashaba was the choice of the executive committee ahead of Portuguese Carlos Queiroz, who was favoured to take over the struggling national team.Wage demands may have been a stumbling block with Queiroz, who has reportedly been offered $2.5 million (1.9 million euros) to continue coaching Iran.Nigerian Stephen Keshi, whose contract was not renewed despite taking his country to the second round of the World Cup in Brazil, was another contender.South Africa are ranked 14 in Africa and 66 in the world and poor tournament results cost Igesund his job.Hosts South Africa were eliminated in the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations quarter-finals after losing a penalty shootout against Mali. They also failed to qualify for the 2014 World Cup, surprisingly finishing second behind lowest seeds Ethiopia in a mini-league.The first task for Mashaba will be to qualify for the 2015 Cup of Nations in Morocco by achieving a top-two finish in a group including Nigeria, Sudan and Congo Brazzaville or Rwanda.Bafana Bafana have never beaten Nigeria in a competitive match and often struggled in the past against the combative Congolese.South Africa face Sudan (away) and Nigeria (home) in September, Congo or Rwanda away and home in October and Sudan (home) and Nigeria (away) in November.

Sri Lanka on top despite Amla ton

Posted:

COLOMBO (AFP) - Captain Hashim Amla struck a gritty 139 not out but failed to stop Sri Lanka from taking the driver's seat in the second and final Test against South Africa on Saturday.Amla, 31, batted for more than eight hours to frustrate the Sri Lankan spinners who shared nine wickets between them to bowl out South Africa for 282 in their first innings.Sri Lanka, who made 421 in their first essay, were 11-0 at stumps in their second innings on the third day for an overall lead of 150.Off-spinner Dilruwan Perera (5-69) grabbed a five-wicket haul, his second in five Tests, while left-armer Rangana Herath chipped in with 4-71.South Africa's weaknesses against spin were exposed as none of the batsmen, barring Amla, could even make a half-century despite the fact the wicket was no minefield. There were phases when the runs dried up, it was tough scoring runs, said South African coach Russell Domingo after the day's play.It wasn't easy for us because of the consistency of their spinners. It would have been great if we had scored 100 more runs. 140-odd is a big lead, it's a substantial lead. Sri Lanka are obviously in a very good position, he said. For Amla, it was his first century as South Africa's Test captain. He faced 382 balls and hit 12 fours in his marathon effort. It was also the first by a South African captain in Sri Lanka, and proved crucial to help the visitors avoid the embarrassment of a follow-on.The South African innings was wrapped up in the final session with Herath having Dale Steyn (30) caught by Kumar Sangakkara and Imran Tahir (15) by Upul Tharanga at deep mid-off.Perera then sent back Morne Morkel for a duck to bowl out the Proteas with five overs remaining in the day.Sri Lankan openers Kaushal Silva (five) and Upul Tharanga (six) saw off the overs without any hiccups.- Amla's lonely toil -======================South Africa lost Jean-Paul Duminy and Vernon Philander (nine) to spin in the second session that saw them put on 71 runs at less than three runs an over.Duminy (three) fiddled around for more than an hour before he was stumped by Niroshan Dickwella off Herath while Philander was bowled by Perera.Perera said the defensive approach by the South Africans had boomeranged on them.We thought they were trying to play for a draw. We managed to get a good lead because they batted defensively. At the moment, we do not have a target in mind. But if we get about 200 runs more, we will be in a very good position, he said.Amla, dropped on 93 at short cover by Silva, completed his 22nd Test hundred with a single off Herath, a fitting reward for his lonely toil on the crease. The bearded batting wizard is leading the side for the first time in this two-Test series after being named skipper last month following the retirement of Graeme Smith. The first session saw Herath get rid of AB de Villiers (37) and Quinton de Kock for a duck in the space of three balls after South Africa had resumed at their overnight 98-3.Amla and De Villiers had started off positively and saw off the first hour without harm.Amla broke the shackles with two consecutive fours off unorthodox spinner Ajantha Mendis and De Villiers followed suit, hitting paceman Suranga Lakmal (1-54) for three boundaries in the same over.De Villiers had a scare on 30 when he gloved Lakmal to the wicketkeeper but TV replays showed the ball had bounced just inches short of Dickwella. But just when the partnership was building up between Amla and De Villiers, Perera's double-strike reduced South Africa to 150-5.He first had De Villiers trapped plumb in front off the fourth ball and then knocked the off-stump of De Kock off the last ball of the over.South Africa lead the series 1-0 after winning the opener in Galle by 153 runs.
