Russian airline blames Egypt crash on 'external' factors

Posted:

MOSCOW (AFP) - The Russian passenger jet that crashed in Egypt killing all 224 people on board came down due to external factors, the airline said Monday, as relatives began identifying their loved ones in Saint Petersburg.Senior Kogalymavia executive Alexander Smirnov said that no technical failures could account for why the Airbus 321 would have broken up in mid-air, as investigators have said happened. The only explanation is some kind of external action, Smirnov told a news conference in Moscow, without elaborating, adding that the doomed jet was in excellent technical condition. Both Cairo and Moscow have played down the claim from Egypts Islamic State (IS) branch that it brought down the aircraft flown by Kogalymavia between holiday destination Sharm el-Sheikh and Russias second largest city on Saturday. The US Director of National Intelligence James Clapper said Monday he could not rule out IS involvement, but thought it unlikely. We dont have any direct evidence of any terrorist involvement yet, he said.Investigators are examining all possible causes as they comb the remote crash site in the Sinai peninsula as part of an Egyptian-led probe into the disaster that also involves experts from Russia, Airbus, and Ireland, where the aircraft was registered.President Vladimir Putin described the crash, Russias worst air disaster, as a huge tragedy in his first comments since Saturdays catastrophe, at a meeting with his transport minister Monday.Without any doubt everything must be done to create an objective picture of events so that we know what happened and can react accordingly, Putin said. The head of Russias aviation authority Alexander Neradko slammed the airlines claims that external factors were to blame as premature and not based on any real facts in televised comments.Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Moscow cannot exclude any version of what caused the crash as investigations were still ongoing, but warned against guessing at the reason.Russia has a dismal air safety record, and while larger carriers have begun upgrading ageing fleets, the crash is likely to raise concerns about smaller airlines such as Kogalymavia. The companys executive Smirnov said the firm had ruled out a technical fault or human error and said the plane had sustained significant damage to its construction that did not allow it to continue the flight. The crew totally lost control and for that reason there was not one attempt to get in contact and report on the accident situation on board, Smirnov said. The plane was flying out of control -- that is, it wasnt flying, it was falling, he said. The claims by the airline came as relatives of those who died in the crash began the painful process of identifying their loved ones after a first plane delivered the remains of 140 victims to Saint Petersburg. The process of identification has begun. It is complex, meticulous work, Saint Petersburg deputy governor Igor Albin told journalists outside the crematorium where the remains are being stored. Cars meanwhile ferried relatives of the dead -- overwhelmingly Russian holidaymakers from the Saint Petersburg area -- to the facility.Family members had already been providing DNA samples at a crisis centre set up close to Saint Petersburgs Pulkovo airport, now the site of an impromptu memorial where people have brought flowers and cuddly toys to commemorate the victims, many of them children. Russian officials said that a second plane was set to repatriate more bodies later Monday evening, but did not say how many. Saint Petersburg was observing a second day of mourning for those lost in the crash. Investigators in the Egyptian-led probe returned to the vast crash site on Monday, an official told AFP, without giving the nationalities of those involved. The crash site in the Wadi al-Zolomat area of North Sinai was littered with blackened aircraft parts and the smell of burnt metal lingered on Sunday.Russias emergencies ministry said it hoped its crews would complete their search mission at the remote location Monday evening.A representative of the ministry told Russian news agencies that investigators had so far found 12 segments of the planes fuselage and personal belongings.Egyptian authorities said that investigators from the probe team are currently examining the black box on-board recorders from the doomed jet in Cairo.Analysts have dismissed claims the jet could have been shot down by IS-affiliated groups in the region if it was flying at its cruising height of 30,000 feet (9,000 metres), but did not rule out that a bomb might have been planted on board.

Tennis: Bellucci sets up Djokovic clash in Paris

PARIS (AFP) - Novak Djokovic will open his campaign for a third consecutive Paris Masters title against Thomaz Bellucci after the Brazilian earned a first-round win on Monday. The South American defeated Russian Teimuraz Gabashvili 6-4, 6-4 and will now challenge the world number one and top seed who is aiming to stretch a 10-match win streak at the Bercy Arena and starting after a bye give to all 16 seeds.Seven-time Swiss Open champion Roger Federer, the third seed, will face Italian Andreas Seppi for the fourth time this season after Seppi put out Uruguays Pablo Cuevas 7-5, 6-3.Seppi ambushed the Swiss in an Australian Open third-round upset - and Federer has been piling on the revenge wins ever since. The 17-time Grand Slam champion beat Seppi in the Indian Wells third round and the final at Halle, Germany in June prior to Wimbledon.Federer comes to Paris to play the last event of the ATP regular season riding a wave of confidence after his 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 defeat of Rafael Nadal at his home event in Basel on Sunday. His sixth title of the season has got Federer keen to get stuck into Paris with the eight-man World Tour Finals in London looming from November 15.The confidence is good, no doubt about it, said Federer. I had a good reaction this week after losing early in Shanghai.I needed to get back the feel of winning. At one point in the week I was quite tired, I was playing with a lot of pressure trying to get to the final four. But now I feel the best I have all week. The body has gotten used to match play again after all these weeks when I didnt have enough matches. Now I feel like Paris is not a problem anymore. Im happy about feeling pretty good right now.Young guns Dominic Thiem and Bernard Tomic also advanced to the second round.Austrias Thiem beat the first of the Frenchman, sending Adrian Mannarino to the end of his season 6-2, 5-7, 6-2.Mannarino complained of problems from a previous hip sprain, saying he started to feel pain early in the third set. My level was not so bad even with the pain. The question is how bad is it. I had an examination in China which was not so clear.Australian Tomic needed just 56 minutes to beat Fabio Fognini 6-3, 6-2, with six double-faults from the often casual Italian contributing to the loss.Tomic next plays Roland Garros winner Stan Wawrinka, seeking to recover from last weeks first-round exit in Basel.Wawrinka holds a 5-1 record in the series, with the pair last playing in Davis Cup more than a year ago.

Football: Under-fire Mourinho hit with stadium ban, fine

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has been hit with a one-match stadium ban and a 40,000 pound ($61,680, 56,000 euros) fine after admitting to a charge of misconduct, the Football Association announced on Monday. The charge related to Mourinhos conduct towards referee Jon Moss during Chelseas recent 2-1 loss at West Ham United, which saw him sent to the stands, and means he will miss Saturdays game at Stoke City.Following an Independent Regulatory Commission hearing today, Jose Mourinho has been given a one-match stadium suspension with immediate effect and fined 40,000 pound, the FA said in a statement. The Chelsea manager admitted an FA charge of misconduct regarding his language and/or behaviour towards the match officials in or around the dressing room area during half-time of the game against West Ham United on 24 October 2015.Mourinho, 52, is currently appealing against a suspended one-game stadium ban imposed upon him by the FA for criticising the referee after his sides 3-1 home defeat by Southampton last month. The suspension relating to his behaviour at West Ham is a separate sanction. The punishment adds to the pile of problems facing Mourinho, whose position is reported to be in jeopardy after his side fell to 15th place in the Premier League following a return of six defeats in 11 matches.Reports also emerged on Monday that former team doctor Eva Carneiro plans to sue Mourinho over his role in her departure from the club.Mourinho criticised Carneiro after she and physiotherapist Jon Fearn ran onto the pitch to treat Eden Hazard during Chelseas 2-2 draw with Swansea City on the seasons opening day, which temporarily left them with nine players, and she was subsequently removed from first-team duties.Mourinhos assistant Silvino Louro was also banished from the touchline during the game at Upton Park, but the FA withdrew a formal charge of improper conduct against him and reminded him of his responsibilities.Chelsea host Dynamo Kiev in the Champions League on Wednesday, when Mourinho will be in the dug-out as the FAs jurisdiction does not extend to European competitions.

Football: Villa caught off Garde as Spurs stroll

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Aston Villas new manager Remi Garde discovered just how hard it will be to save his club from relegation as the Premier League strugglers slumped to a 3-1 defeat at Tottenham on Monday.Garde was confirmed as Villa boss on a three-and-a-half-year contract earlier in the day, but Kevin MacDonald, in charge on a caretaker basis since Tim Sherwoods sacking nine days ago, selected the team before the official start of the Frenchmans reign. While Garde wasnt involved, the former Lyon coach was watching from the White Hart Lane stands and it must have made for uncomfortable viewing as his side paid the price for a lacklustre start.Villa, whose only league win this season came on the opening weekend, fell behind after less than three minutes when sloppy defending was punished by Mousa Dembele and Dele Alli doubled Tottenhams advantage before half-time.Jordan Ayew got one back for Villa late on, but Harry Kane netted in the final seconds and when Garde arrives at the clubs Bodymoor Heath training ground on Tuesday, he will be in charge of a team rooted to the bottom of the table after a seventh successive league defeat condemned them to the worst start in their history. The players need to keep the ball better and Im sure Remi will be reiterating that to them with his Arsenal background, MacDonald said.We came with a game plan but that went out of the window after three minutes. The desire is there and the shift the players put in shows theres something for the manager to work with.Tottenham are up to fifth place on the back of an impressive 10-match unbeaten run in the league, while Gardes forgettable first day suggests he is in for a bumpy ride.Villa misspelled Gardes first name in their announcement of his appointment on Twitter, then the 49-year-olds flight from France was delayed by fog. When Garde arrived in north London, there was more bad news as Villa defender Micah Richards was suspended just before kick-off after a tunnel altercation in a recent match.Garde took his seat in the directors box with a pensive expression and if he was in any doubt about the size of the task facing him, the former Arsenal midfielder was given a glaring example of Villas numerous flaws in the third minute.Villa defender Ciaran Clark allowed himself to be pushed aside by Dembele, who continued to show greater desire than his marker as he surged down the left flank into the penalty area, where he fired under goalkeeper Brad Guzan from close-range.It was the third fastest goal in the Premier League this season and Garde, trying his best to look impassive, must have feared the worst as Tottenham pushed hard for a second goal. There was no improvement in Villas fortunes as midfielder Ashley Westwood was forced to come off after being caught by Dembeles flailing arm.And adding insult to injury, Tottenham increased their lead in first half stoppage-time.Roses cross was headed weakly away by Joleon Lescott and young England midfielder Alli controlled adroitly on his thigh before firing past Guzan into the far corner.Villa had been lacking confidence and quality in all departments and, high in the stands, Garde shook his head in disgust. But MacDonald sent on Rudy Gestede and Carles Gil in the second half and the pair gave Villa a more dynamic look.Leandro Bacunas curling effort hit a post and, with Tottenham sitting too deep, Villa were able to reduce the deficit in the 79th minute.Ayew tried his luck with a drive from 25 yards out and the ball hit Jan Vertonghen, deflecting past wrong-footed goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.Garde could at least take heart from Villas late flourish. They almost snatched an unlikely point as Gestede headed wide and Ayew lashed just over before Tottenham striker Kane was left unmarked to fire into the top corner in stoppage-time.

Motorcycling: Rossi deliberately kicked Marquez -- Honda

Posted:

PARIS (AFP) - Honda on Monday accused MotoGP leader Valentino Rossi of deliberately making Marc Marquez crash in Malaysia in a claim that ratchets up the tension ahead of this weekends title showdown in Valencia.Rossi leads the 2015 championship by seven points from Jorge Lorenzo but must start from the back of the grid on Sunday after stewards in Sepang found him guilty of kicking Honda star Marquez off his bike.Rossi is appealing the punishment with a hearing set to take place 48 hours before the race. The Italian MotoGP legends actions have caused widespread outrage in the Spanish media. But Rossi denies kicking defending champion Marquez, claiming that he is the victim of a Spanish plot.He accuses Marquez of pursuing a dirty game with the express intention of helping compatriot Lorenzo to the title, claiming Marquez conspired to help Lorenzo win points in Australia.Honda stepped into the spat on Monday, the Japanese constructor claiming their technical data proves Rossi kicked Marquezs machine. It is clear that Valentino intentionally pushed Marc towards the outside of the track, which is out of the rules, therefore Marc had no other option other than to run wide, said Hondas vice-president Shuhei Nakamoto. The data from Marcs bike shows that even though he was picking up the bike trying to avoid contact with Valentino, his front brake lever suddenly received an impact that locked the front tyre, which is the reason for his crash. We believe that this pressure was a result of Rossis kick.Spains secretary of state for sport, Miguel Cardenal, told Spanish media that he hoped fair play would rule at the MotoGP season finale on Sunday.Rossi, seeking a record-equalling eighth premier class title, heads to Valencia on 312 points with Lorenzo on 305.

Oil prices dip on Chinese, Russian data

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - Oil prices dropped Monday after data showed Chinas manufacturing output continued to contract and Russian oil production hit a new record high. The weakening outlook for demand in China, the worlds largest energy consumer, and the increased Russian production added to worries about the global oil oversupply that have pushed prices lower by more than 50 percent since mid-2014.After three straight sessions of gains last week, US benchmark West Texas Intermediate for December closed at $46.14 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange, down 45 cents from Fridays settlement.Brent North Sea crude for delivery in December, the global oil benchmark, fell 77 cents to $48.79 in London. Its just an overall oversupplied market with demand that is not really enough to get people excited, said Kyle Cooper at IAF Advisors.Chinas official purchasing managers index for the manufacturing sector showed activity shrank in October for the third straight month. The Chinese PMI disappointed only slightly but thats enough to renew the bearish sentiment around the oil market, said John Kilduff at Again Capital.Tim Evans of Citi Futures said there was no urgency to the selling Monday despite the China and Russia news or Irans moving closer to the lifting of international sanctions, which have hobbled its exports.A slowing economy in China and Iranian nuclear developments are apparently no longer news, at least as far as the oil market is concerned, Evans said.We see a risky complacency regarding the ongoing physical surplus.Russian oil production broke a post-Soviet record in October, climbing to 10.78 million barrels per day, according to Bloomberg News.Although Saudi Arabia produced less last month, at around 10.1 million barrels a day, it remains the worlds biggest exporter of crude.

Forex: Chinese yuan drops after shift by central bank

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - Chinas move to sharply raise its daily yuan reference rate Monday resulted conversely in a fall in the currency, but its overall upward track appeared to remain in place.Other major currencies were uniformly flat as the week opened -- the dollar trading at $1.1014 per euro and 120.77 yen -- leaving the policy move by the Peoples Bank of Chinas to hold the forex headlines.Following last Fridays spike to the highest level since the August devaluation, the yuan slipped back when the PBoC adjusted the central rate of the yuan -- also known as the renminbi (RMB) -- upwards by 0.54 percent against the US dollar. The currency slid to 6.3374 yuan per dollar, against 6.3174 yuan in late trade Friday. But at that level it was still significantly stronger than the 6.35-6.39 yuan range held since the August 11 devaluation. The increase in the central rate was the largest since 2005 when Beijing unpegged the yuan from the greenback, and signalled, most analysts said, that Beijing was committed to reforms that will free up RMB trade. Some analysts said Fridays unexplained surge was a market response to rising expectations that the International Monetary Fund will decide this month to include the yuan in its basket of elite currencies, known as Special Drawing Rights.Liu Jian, an analyst from the Bank of Communications, said the governments policy goal is very obvious. It is trying to maintain a stable foreign exchange market and guide the market as stability is important for the yuan to be admitted to the SDR at the coming IMF meeting.

Space station marks 15 years inhabited by astronauts

Posted:

MIAMI (AFP) - Astronauts celebrated 15 years of circling the Earth aboard the International Space Station Monday, a new milestone for an orbiting space lab that some say deserves the Nobel Peace Prize. With operations expected to last another decade, the worlds space agencies are now looking to the outpost to provide key data on how future space pioneers may withstand the rigors of venturing further, perhaps even to Mars.We do a lot of experiments up here but I think the most important experiment is the space station as an orbiting vehicle that keeps humans alive in space for long periods of time, said NASA astronaut Scott Kelly, during a live press conference with the stations crew to mark 15 years of continuous habitation.Along with Russian cosmonaut Mikhail Kornienko, Kelly is spending one year at the ISS so scientists can study the effects of long-term spaceflight on the body and mind.Any trip to Mars would likely last years, raising the issue of harmful radiation. But it could also help scientists understand how to nourish astronauts for long periods and how to maintain healthy crew psychology. The space station really is a bridge, US astronaut Kjell Lindgren told the media conference. It is a test bed for the technologies we need to develop and understand in order to have a successful trip to Mars. The ISS was just a two-module unit when the first crew to inhabit the research laboratory project arrived on November 2, 2000.They were American astronaut Bill Shepherd and Russian cosmonauts Sergei Krikalev and Yuri Gidzenko.Since then, a rotating cast of more than 220 of the worlds elite astronauts have lived and worked at the ISS, which includes 16 participating nations and is led by the United States and Russia.Modules were added over time and today the football-stadium-sized outfit represents about $100 billion dollars in investment and provides as much living space as a six-bedroom house.Traveling at an altitude of about 250 miles (400 kilometers) and a speed of about 17,500 miles (28,000 kilometers) per hour, the space station circles the Earth once every 90 minutes.Typically, six crew at a time eat, sleep and float around in the microgravity environment, working 35 hours per week on a host of science projects for a mission duration of about six months. After one crew of three astronauts departs, three replacements blast off aboard a Russian Soyuz spaceship, now the only mode of transport to and from the ISS after the US space shuttle program was retired in 2011.John Holdren, director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, called the 15th anniversary an incredible achievement, and said the international partnership that built and maintains the station is a shining example, moreover, of what humanity can accomplish when we work together in peace. In the past, NASA administrator Charles Bolden has said the project is worthy of the Nobel Peace Prize.Asked about that assertion, Russian cosmonaut Oleg Kononenko, who also took part in Mondays news conference, said Bolden is 100 percent right.People on the ground sometimes fail to hear each other, to see each other. Here in space, this is impossible, Kononenko said through a translator. Everyone is important here and the success of the program -- and sometimes even life -- depends on what each and every one of us does. The six crewmen currently living in space planned to mark the anniversary with a communal dinner and some reflection, said Japanese astronaut Kimiya Yui.We are going to have a meal together, he said. And also we would like to talk about the future.
