Trump declares 'patience is over' with North Korea

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - President Donald Trump declared that the US had run out of patience with North Korea over its nuclear drive Friday as he welcomed South Koreas new leader Moon Jae-In to talks at the White House. While Moon has been arguing for greater engagement with Pyongyang as the best way to put the brakes on its nuclear and ballistic missile programs, Trump made clear that he was in no mood to pursue diplomacy with a regime he accused of having no respect for human life. And while Moon announced that Trump had accepted an offer to visit Seoul later this year, the leaders failed to map out any kind of joint strategy on how best to deal with the threat posed by the North Korean leadership.Together, we are facing the threat of the reckless and brutal regime in North Korea. The nuclear and ballistic missile programs of that regime require a determined response, said Trump. The North Korean dictatorship has no regard for the safety and security of its people, for its neighbors and has no respect for human life. The Trump administration has been growing increasingly exasperated with North Korean leader Kim Jong-Uns regime which has staged a barrage of missile tests in recent months. There was also deep anger in the United States after Otto Warmbier, an American student who was detained in North Korea on a tourist trip around 18 months ago, was returned home in a coma earlier this month. He died several days later.Trump had been pinning his hopes on China -- North Koreas main diplomatic ally -- to bring pressure to bear on Pyongyang but declared last week that their efforts had failed. The era of strategic patience with the North Korean regime has failed, many years it has failed. Frankly, that patience is over, Trump said at a press briefing in the Rose Garden. And while he avoided criticizing his guests approach, Trump made clear he was in no mood to enter dialogue with North Korea but rather saw sanctions as the best way to proceed. The United States calls on other regional powers and all responsible nations to join us in implementing sanctions and demanding that the North Korean regime choose a better path and do it quickly and a different future for its long suffering people, he said.- Gravest challenge -Washington, South Koreas security guarantor, has more than 28,000 troops in the country to defend it from its communist neighbor, which has been intensifying missile tests -- including five since Moons inauguration.Moon said there was no dispute between his government and Trump over the nature of the threat posed by North Korea. The gravest challenge confronting our two nations is the nuclear and missile threat posed by North Korea, he said.President Trump and I decided to place a top priority on addressing this issue, and coordinate closely on relevant policies. To this end, we will employ both sanctions and dialogue in a phased and comprehensive approach... to seek a fundamental resolution of the North Korean nuclear problem.Moon has used his first foreign trip to lobby the Trump administration and congressional leaders to back his policy of engagement with the North.Ahead of his arrival, Moon argued that Seoul and Washington must offer concessions to Pyongyang if it complies with demands for a nuclear freeze -- as a gateway to dialogue, and to eventual dismantlement of its nuclear program. But the Trump administrations hardening stance was illustrated on Thursday when it slapped sanctions on a Chinese bank linked to North Korea -- drawing an angry response from Beijing. The two leaders also spoke about bilateral trade, with Trump saying the current $17 billion dollar trade deficit with Seoul was unacceptable, highlighting the number of Korean-made cars on American roads.Im encouraged by President Moons assurances that he will work to create a level playing field so that American workers and businesses and especially automakers can have a fair shake at dealing with South Korea, he said.

Jadhav, Dhoni star with bat in 3rd WI ODI

Posted:

NORTH SOUND (AFP) - Kedar Jadhav triggered a late run explosion in partnership with Mahendra Singh Dhoni as India reached 251 for four batting first against the West Indies at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua on Friday.Dhoni top-scored in the third fixture of a five-match One-Day International series with an unbeaten 78 off 79 balls on a sluggish pitch. However, the real impetus came from Jadhav, who blazed 40 off 26 balls in an unbroken fifth-wicket stand of 81 runs off just 46 deliveries.Ajinkya Rahane had earlier held the innings together after the loss of early wickets, the opening batsman extending his excellent run of form in the series with 72 off 112 balls, his third consecutive score over 50 in the Caribbean.Comprehensively beaten by 105 runs in the second match in Trinidad five days earlier following a rain-ruined no-result to start the series, West Indies took early advantage of the pitch conditions which made free scoring difficult.Miguel Cummins removed Shikhar Dhawan in just the third over of the match to a catch at third man while Jason Holder justified his decision to field first on winning the toss when he claimed the prized scalp of Virat Kohli, his Indian counterpart being brilliantly caught by Kyle Hope at gully.Hope, elder brother of wicketkeeper-batsman Shai Hope, is one of two ODI debutants in the West Indies team, the other being fast bowler Kesrick Williams. From 34 for two in the tenth over, Rahane found a reliable partner in Yuvraj Singh, the pair putting on 66 for the third wicket before Devendra Bishoo trapped Yuvraj lbw for 39, the original not out decision on the field being overturned on review.Dhoni then joined Rahane in another important stand of 70, although both found the spinners especially hard to get away on the turgid surface.Bishoo and off-spinner Ashley Nurse completed a combined 20 overs at a cost of just 72 runs. However, the acceleration finally came with the arrival of Jadhav at the crease in the 43rd over when Rahane became Cummins second wicket of the innings. Both batsmen took on the faster bowlers with gusto and rattled a West Indies team that looked on course to keep the Indians well below the 250-run mark.A measure of the difficulty in scoring was the failure of any of the batsmen except the adventurous Jadhav to score at better than a run-a-ball.Seeking victory to take an unbeatable 2-0 lead in the series, India are fielding the same XI for the third consecutive match.

Rain water accumulates in Quaid's Karachi residence Wazir Mansion

KARACHI (Dunya News) – While nationwide rain was welcomed as a blessing after severe heat, it turned out to be a bane for local citizens of Karachi due to improper arrangements by the government institutions.Even the residence of the Pakistan’s Quaid-e-Azam named “Wazir Mansion” in the Sindh provincial capital could not be freed from the accumulation of water. The two-storey building was reportedly embedded with the rain water during the pre-monsoon week. Met Office had already issued an alert a few days ago and warned authorities to make necessary arrangements for smooth running of affairs.Photo Credit: ONLINEHowever, Sindh government paid a very little heed to predict the hazards of rain for the metropolitan city. Areas beside Wazir Mansion including Kharadar, Mithadar, Kapra Market and Bolton Market also sank in the excessive untreated water on the roads. The residents asked how the government will take care of locals when it couldn’t even prevent the destruction of a house once resided by the national hero. The media was consistent in covering the areas under high accumulation of water and political and administrative heads paid little attention to their cry. The local institutions failed to fulfill their promises in the populous regions.Civilized nations are known to respect their leaders and honour the achievements. The destruction of his residence and accumulation of water in it shows how much we care about his belongings.

Zimbabwe thrash Sri Lanka in ODI

Posted:

GALLE (AFP) - Solomon Mire smashed his maiden one-day century on Friday to take Zimbabwe to a historic six wicket win over Sri Lanka and pile pressure on the beleaguered Asian nation.Mire hit 112 off 96 balls as Zimbabwe reached 322-4 to pass Sri Lankas 316-5 with more than two overs to spare. It was the first time in more than 200 one day internationals in Sri Lanka that a visiting team has scored more than a 300 run target to get a victory.Sri Lanka have been criticised in recent days by the countrys sports minister for being overweight and unfit. Captain Angelo Mathews also laid into his players after the defeat.Having 315 on the board, I thought it was enough, he said. Our bowling was poor and our fielding was pathetic. It was a good batting effort by them.Mire, known for his quickfire hitting, was twice dropped as Sri Lanka virtually gave the game away.Sikandar Raza hit an unbeaten 67 and Sean Williams 65 as Zimbabwe stunned the home side in the first one-day international to be held in Galle for 17 years. The day did not start badly for the home side. Kusal Mendis blasted 86 off 80 balls as Sri Lanka plundered runs off the Zimbabwe attack on a slow pitch.Upul Tharanga hit 79 and Danushka Gunathilaka 60 after Mathews won the toss and chose to bat. From there, Zimbabwe, one of the minnows of world cricket, went off script.Mire, who also bowled seven overs before coming out as opening batsman, hit 14 fours and his third-wicket stand of 161 with Williams put the African side well on the way to victory.Raza claimed the winning runs with a six to compound the humiliation.Raza praised Zimbabwes selectors for keeping faith with the squad.A lot of cricket behind us has helped us pull off this fantastic win, he said.I kept telling myself that this had to be for Solomon. For someone to play in this kind of heat after bowling his heart out, that was sensational. I wanted to do it for him.Zimbabwe captain Graeme Cremer said the win was a huge confidence booster. To chase down a score like that, to post our first win here was amazing.Cremer called Mire a real asset to the team, not just with the bat but also with the ball. Hes lovely to watch.Zimbabwe still have four one day internationals and a Test to face in Sri Lanka, who have faced increasing jibes over recent performances. We just want to take it one game at a time, said Cremer. We can hopefully carry this confidence forward.

Who facilitated the release of Raymond Davis?

Posted:

(Web Desk) - Raymond Davis, an ex-CIA spy and US citizen in Pakistan, has wrote a memoir of his experiences in the country with special reference to his arrest and US-Pak diplomatic tensions that arose afterwards with his release. Till the very end, Davis has maintained his stance in the book saying, “I don’t regret shooting those two men in Lahore. I believe it was an appropriate response to a life-threatening situation. But I do regret the turmoil it created.”In 2011, Davis had reportedly gunned down two young men at Lahore’s Qurtaba Chowk. In his book named “The Contractor: How I Landed in a Pakistani Prison and Ignited a Diplomatic Crisis”, he talks about this 2011 Lahore incident, the imprisonment, diplomats from both sides on the bargaining table trying to get him out, and the foreign affairs crisis between the United States and Pakistan that followed. While explaining the whole matter, Davis reaffirmed that the two young boys Faizan and Faheem wanted to rob him and he killed them in self defence. He was then chased by traffic wardens who arrested him before imprisonment. While diplomats from the United States put pressure referring to his diplomatic immunity, Pakistani officials including then Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi opined the CIA spy didn’t enjoy such rights. Islamabad and Washington were on the verge of a tense battle. The main argument against US was Davis is an intelligence operative working freely in Pakistan and his crime should be dealt with in accordance with the crime laws of the country. His trial wascarried out under Islamic Shariah Law.However, Davis was pardoned in exchange for blood money. He had neither qualified for immunity nor his team had any diplomatic option left for the acquittal, rather a simple deal with the relatives of those two young boys resulted in his release. He was flown outside Pakistan immediately after the heirs told the court they had accepted monetary compensation to settle the case.Pasha was clearly committed to making sure that the deal was successful ... In a meeting of top Pakistani officials, both President Zardari and Prime Minister Gilani tried to convince Qureshi to change his hardline stance, but Qureshi let it be known in a press conference the following day that he wasn’t going to budge, he claimed in his book.Davis credits then ISI chief General (retd) Ahmed Shuja Pasha, President Asif Zardari, PM Yousaf Raza Gilani and Pakistans ambassador to the United States Husain Haqqani, Nawaz Sharif, John Kerry, attorney Peter Strasserand and others for his defending his case. He writes, In the end, no one individual should receive the credit for devising theplan. It was clearly a group effort.Having said that, Davis pointed out the law of blood money or diyat as the cause of his release which was explained to him by Carmela Conroy, the US consul general in Lahore. He writes, Carmela must have seen the fear in my eyes because she hurriedly continued. “There’s also diyat, also known as ‘blood money.’ In this case compensation gets paid to the victim or the victim’s heirs, and the accused goes free. That’s what’s going to happen here. The victims’ families are going to receive a sum ofmoney, then you’ll be getting released.” She paused as if to emphasize what she was about to say next. Ray, you’re getting out of here. The relations between both countries hit a new low when American forces carried out a raid on the compound in Abbottabad that left Osama bin Laden dead, several weeks after Davis arrival in the US. In the concluding chapter, he said, The onus was (now) on them (Pakistan) to explain how the world’s most-wanted terrorist had been living within their borders for six years without anyone knowing about it.The story was compiled by Umair Sohail

Japan plans to send man on moon by 2030

TOKYO (AFP) - Japan has revealed ambitious plans to put an astronaut on the Moon around 2030 in new proposals from the countrys space agency. This is the first time the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) has said it aims to send an astronaut beyond the International Space Station, an agency spokeswoman told AFP on Friday. The idea is to first join a NASA-led mission in 2025 to build a space station in the moons orbit, as part of a longer-term effort by NASA to reach Mars.Tokyo hopes that contributing to the multinational mission and sharing Japanese technology will land it a coveted spot at the station, from which it could eventually send an astronaut to the Moon, the spokeswoman said. The plan was presented at an education ministry panel this week, with a more formal blueprint expected next year, according to public broadcaster NHK.The announcement comes as China and India develop their space programmes. In November, Chinas Shenzhou-11 spacecraft returned to Earth, bringing home two astronauts from the rising powers longest-ever orbital mission.Beijing has also unveiled illustrations of a Mars probe and rover it aims to send to the Red Planet at the end of the decade.NASA and other global space agencies are working hard on sending astronauts to Mars by the 2030s.In March, the US Congress passed a bill -- signed by President Donald Trump -- directing NASA to send a manned mission to Mars in 2033.

Its a good problem to have when youre struggling to know which guys to put in.Someone like (Surreys) Mark Stoneman has been doing well at the level below. Does Joe Root go back to three and we put an extra middle order player in?Where does Jonny Bairstow bat? This is all up for discussion and well come up with an answer.Broad is struggling with a bruised left heel but England hope he will be able to play for Nottinghamshire against Surrey in the One-Day Cup final at Lords on Saturday as a way of proving his fitness for the first of a four-Test series.Well know more tonight (Thursday) before our selection meeting in the morning, Bayliss said of Broad.Hes been training the last couple of days when weve been putting him through more of a test and if he comes through that hell play in the one-day final as a test for the Test match.Anderson has recently returned from a groin problem, while Jake Ball (knee strain), a county team-mate of Broad, joined Chris Woakes (side strain) on the injured list on Thursday. While Hameed has been searching for runs, Cook has been in superb form for Essex, scoring three centuries since standing down as Test skipper, a position now occupied by Root, for whom next Thursdays match at Lords will mark the start of his captaincy reign. Its great that after giving away the captaincy hes still got that hunger for runs and it was great to see him making another hundred yesterday (Wednesday), said Bayliss.Im sure that as an ex-England captain it will be bit of a juggling act for him in terms of how much he gets involved.I know that he and Joe Root get on really well. Cook is very well respected in the team and Im sure if he feels something needs to be said, he will.England will have to decide whether to give Gary Ballance another recall following the Yorkshire batsmans fine start to the season. The one thing that Gary has always had in his favour is that he is mentally tough, said Bayliss. Thats the reason why he is able to come back from being dropped a couple of times and why hes been able to score a lot of runs for Yorkshire this year.Theres no reason why someone like that cant come back and a make a success of international cricket.

Du Plessis in line for Lord's as Philander misses Lions match

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - South Africa captain Faf du Plessis could return to England in time to lead the side for next weeks first Test at Lords after the birth of his first child.Du Plessis had returned home to be with his wife, Imari, putting a question mark against his participation in the first of a four-Test series that starts on July 6.But Thursday saw du Plessis announce the birth of their child by tweeting: Our biggest blessing yet came in a small package. So very grateful.Opening batsman Dean Elgar led South Africa in their three-day warm-up match against the second-string England Lions in Worcester which started on Thursday. If du Plessis does return in time for the first Test, opener Heino Kuhn, who replaced Stephen Cook in the squad, would like be South Africas lone debutant at Lords.South Africa made 58 for one on a first day at Worcester where rain meant only 20 overs play was possible.Elgar fell for five, caught behind by Sam Billings off George Garton. Kuhn was 30 not out and Hashim Amla unbeaten on 16.Before play started, experienced South Africa paceman Vernon Philander was ruled out with the right ankle injury he suffered while playing for English county Sussex two weeks ago.Nevertheless, a South Africa statement said Philander was making satisfactory progress.South Africa team manager Dr Mohammed Moosajee added: Vernon is in the final stages of his rehab following the injury to his right ankle two weeks ago.He is building on to bowl at full pace by the end of the week to prove his availability for selection for the first Test match against England at Lords next week.

Lanning century trumps Atapattu's 178 as Australia win again

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Australia captain Meg Lanning made a superb century as the reigning champions made it two wins out of two at the womens World Cup with a tournament-record chase to beat Sri Lanka by eight wickets at Bristol on Thursday despite a stunning hundred from Chamari Atapattu. The Sri Lanka number three made an unbeaten 178 -- the third highest individual score in a womens one-day international -- in a seemingly competitive total of 257 for nine.Atapattus innings featured 22 fours and six sixes. But poor fielding and catching meant Sri Lankas spin-dominated attack rarely looked like defending such a score, with Lanning making 152 not out -- her 11th ODI century a record for womens matches at this level.Lanning ended the match in style, hitting a six to bring up her 150 and seal victory for Australia with nearly six overs to spare. It was their second dominant success of the tournament, after an opening eight-wicket win over the West Indies. But Atapattu received the player of the match award and an admiring Lanning said: Once she got going, it was hard to stop her. We couldnt stop her in the end, anyway. We know she likes to hit the ball hard and straight. We tried a whole lot of plans but none of that worked -- a very special innings.Lanning added: In the innings break, I said we need someone to get a big score. It was good that I managed to do that.Sri Lanka captain Inoka Ranaweera had mixed emotions, saying: I think we need to build partnerships and play in the middle, so I am disappointed. I am proud of Chamari, I am very happy. For our next game against England, we will look to make fewer mistakes.India, who stunned hosts England with a 35-run victory, also made it two wins from two as they overpowered the West Indies by seven wickets at Taunton on Thursday.Opener Smriti Mandhana got to three figures with an unbeaten 106 following her 90 against England. She added 108 runs for the third wicket with captain Mithali Raj (46) after India were in trouble at 33 for two chasing a modest 184.Smriti played well for her hundred, it was a crucial innings she played, said Raj.Indias spinners made life so tough for the West Indies that even the usually dynamic Deandra Dottin -- holder of the fastest century in womens T20Is -- could manage a mere seven off 48 balls. The West Indies slumped to 91 for six before some late-order hitting boosted the total. We didnt get the batting right in the middle, admitted West Indies captain Stafanie (attn eds: correct) Taylor. We have the batters to do it but I think its up to the batters to take more responsibility in their actions. All the eight teams involved play each other once, with the top four contesting the semi-finals.The final takes place at Lords on July 23.

KSA releases Iranian fishermen held for over a year

Posted:

TEHRAN (AFP) - Saudi Arabia released five Iranian fishermen held for over a year, news agencies in Iran reported Thursday, in a rare sign of conciliation between the regional rivals. The five fishermen were said to have been in custody since they strayed into Saudi waters in May 2016.Two fishermen from Genaveh (in southwestern Iran), who are father and son, have been freed and are returning to Genaveh, said Abdolali Sayyadi, head of the local branch of the Red Crescent NGO, according to the IRIB news agency.Three other fishermen from Bushehr (a nearby Iranian port), who were freed by Saudi Arabia, are returning to Bushehr by a boat sent to them from the Foroozan oil field, he added. These fishermen were arrested in May last year by Saudi marine guards when they unknowingly entered Saudi coastal waters. The release comes just a week after Iran demanded that three other fishermen detained by Saudi Arabia earlier this month be freed.Riyadh claimed they were members of Irans elite Revolutionary Guards aboard an explosives-laden boat heading to an oil platform in the Gulf and planning to carry out a terrorist attack.Iran denied the allegations and said another fisherman had been killed by the Saudi coastguard at the time of the arrests. The two countries, who severed diplomatic ties last year, accuse each other of seeking to dominate the Middle East and are on opposing sides in several regional conflicts.

Trump slammed over 'facelift' outburst against TV host

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Donald Trump unleashed a brutal personal attack Thursday on respected female television host Mika Brzezinski, sparking an instant backlash, in the latest stunning salvo in the presidents ongoing war with the media.Trumps Twitter outburst -- in which he describes the journalist bleeding badly from a facelift -- appears to have been triggered by Brzezinskis sharp comments during the morning show she co-hosts with Joe Scarborough on the left-leaning MSNBC network.I heard poorly rated @Morning_Joe speaks badly of me (dont watch anymore), wrote Trump, an avid cable news watcher. Then how come low I.Q. Crazy Mika, along with Psycho Joe, came to Mar-a-Lago 3 nights in a row around New Years Eve, and insisted on joining me. She was bleeding badly from a face-lift. I said no he tweeted. In recent days Trump has escalated his attacks on US media outlets -- which he accuses of peddling fake news about him -- singling out CNN over the retraction of a story about his administrations supposed links with Russia, but also assailing rival cable networks, the New York Times and the Washington Post. But the vulgarity of his latest assault triggered a torrent of criticism including within his own party.Inappropriate. Undignified. Unpresidential, tweeted Jeb Bush, Trumps rival for the White House nomination last year, while the top Republican on Capitol Hill, House Speaker Paul Ryan, conceded the presidents comments were not appropriate. What were trying to do around here is improve the tone, the civility of the debate. And this obviously doesnt help do that, Ryan told a news conference.Out of his mindBrzezinski -- the daughter of the late Zbigniew Brzezinski, national security advisor to Jimmy Carter -- herself appeared uncowed. She responded with a post of her own, a photo of a young child reaching for Cheerios cereal.Made for little hands, the caption read -- a schoolyard taunt that has been leveled against the image-conscious Trump since the days of his candidacy. In her Thursday show, Brzezinski suggested the president was psychologically unhinged.Everybody in Washington, in the administration, needs to look at this from... a point of view where theyre not lobotomized because youre sitting in there and youre so scared of him, and you think you need to suck up to the president. If a boss at NBC, MSNBCs parent company, started tweeting wildly about peoples appearances, bullying people, talking about people in the competition, lying every day, undermining his managers, throwing them under the (bus) -- that person would be thrown out. There would be concerns that the person who runs the company is out of his mind.Early in the 2016 campaign the Morning Joe hosts were accused of being too friendly with Trump, a frequent guest on air.The relationship however soured last August, when Trump tweeted: Some day, when things calm down, Ill tell the real story of @JoeNBC and his very insecure long-time girlfriend, @morningmika. This is a president who fights fire with fire and certainly will not be allowed to be bullied by liberal media or liberal elites in Hollywood or anywhere else. But at least half a dozen Republican lawmakers judged the president had crossed a line. Please just stop, wrote Senator Ben Sasse on Twitter. This isnt normal and its beneath the dignity of your office. This is not okay, agreed Kansas lawmaker Lynn Jenkins. The Trump-Brzezinski feud lit up the internet, where critics were reminded of Trumps notorious attack last August on Fox reporter Megyn Kelly, who he said had blood coming out of her wherever after she challenged him in a campaign debate.Harry Potter author and noted Trump critic J.K. Rowling took inspiration from a revered past president in writing: Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a mans character, give him power. Abraham Lincoln.

Football: Chile beat Portugal on penalties in Confed Cup semi

Posted:

KAZAN (AFP) - Claudio Bravo was Chiles hero on Wednesday as they beat Portugal 3-0 in a penalty shoot-out in the Confederations Cup semi-finals.The Manchester City goalkeeper saved all three penalties from Portugals Ricardo Quaresma, Joao Moutinho and Nani, while Arturo Vidal, Charles Aranguiz and Alexis Sanchez nailed their spot-kicks for the South Americans. We are satisfied with the result and how we played, but we have still not won anything, warned the 34-year-old Bravo.Chile progress to Sundays final in St Petersburg to face either Mexico or Germany, who meet Thursday in Sochi in the other semi-final.Im very proud of this team. Claudio pulled off some good saves to keep us in the game, said Chile coach Juan Antonio Pizzi. He had the ability to foresee where their players would put their kicks. Now it doesnt matter who we get, we just need to recover for the final.Losers Portugal will contest Sundays third-place play-off in Moscow.Chile almost settled Wednesdays match in the dying stages of extra-time when both Vidal and substitute Martin Rodriguez hit the woodwork as Portugal hung on to take the game to a shoot-out.The defeat in Kazan will be bitterly disappointing for Portugals superstar forward Cristiano Ronaldo. The Real Madrid star, who is facing doubts about his future in Spain as he prepares to answer allegations of tax evasion in a Madrid court next month, had won man-of-the-match awards in all three group matches. Before kick-off in Kazan, Manchester Citys new signing Bernardo Silva shook off a foot injury he suffered in the 4-0 drubbing of New Zealand to make Portugals starting line-up.With Pepe suspended, Jose Fonte partnered Bruno Alves at centre-back.Up front, AC Milans 21-year-old striker Andre Silva partnered Ronaldo, but the pair endured a frustrating night at the hands of Chiles defence.Chiles coach Juan Antonio Pizzi named the same team which drew 1-1 with world champions Germany last Thursday as centre-back Gary Medel and midfielder Aranguiz both shook off knocks. The game got off to a frantic start which demanded early saves from both goalkeepers. With just six minutes gone, Sanchez put a superb pass in behind the defence, which landed just in front of Eduardo Vargas, but Portugals goalkeeper Rui Patricio blocked the shot.At the other end moments later, a low Ronaldo cross put Andre Silva in space, but Bravo smothered the effort at close range.Aranguiz twice went close with efforts on the Portugal goal in the opening half and it was end-to-end stuff again after the break.Chiles Vargas forced Patricio into another reflex save, while Ronaldo fired at Bravo when Portugal counter-attacked immediately. Then Vidals long-range effort went screaming just high and wide of the Portugal goal.Ronaldo sent a free-kick just over and had a shot blocked as both sides attacked relentlessly, but the scores remained goalless and the game went to extra time. There was no let up in the pace as Portugals Andre Gomes went close while Sanchez headed Mauricio Islas cross from the left just wide of the post.Joao Moutinho came on for Adrien Silva, who had worked tirelessly in midfield for Portugal, in the first period of extra time. With time almost up, Chile had a penalty appeal turned down when substitute Francisco Silva appeared to be fouled by Fonte in the area before Vidal, then Rodriguez rattled Portugals woodwork.

Tennis: Djokovic wins before rain returns in Eastbourne

Posted:

EASTBOURNE (AFP) - Top seed Novak Djokovic moved into the quarter-finals at Eastbourne before rain brought an early finish on Wednesday. The interruption was the second major hit on the Wimbledon warm-up event after a near-total washout on Tuesday. With the womens draw 64 players strong and the mens half that size, WTA third-round matches were backed up at an event which finishes on Saturday.Women were due to play twice on Wednesday in a plan which was ruined as just eight matches of 16 were completed, while the men got through seven of 12.Among those who may have to play twice on Thursday are womens top seed Angelique Kerber and number two Simona Halep.Djokovic passed his first grass-court test of the season, defeating Canadian qualifier Vasek Pospisil 6-4, 6-3.The former world number one claimed his fifth victory in as many attempts against Pospisil, who is now 4-22 against top-10 opponents in his career. The Serbian is playing a pre-Wimbledon tournament for the first time since 2010 and will next face Donald Young, who beat Jared Donaldson 6-4, 7-5.Im glad that I came here to Eastbourne, Djokovic said.I have had a great couple of days of training with good players, different styles of game.Yesterday it obviously wasnt really enjoyable to see the rain falling all day.But today we almost played a full match, so Im glad for that. I felt good on the court, considering its the first match. The world number four Djokovic, who will be advised by Andre Agassi at Wimbledon, is the second-highest-ranked mens player to ever compete at the Aegon International, behind then number two Marcelo Rios in 1998.In the first round, Russian Daniil Medvedev knocked out fifth seed Sam Querrey, beating the American 6-3, 7-5. German Mischa Zverev, seeded sixth, beat Ryan Harrison 6-4 7-6 (11/9).Seventh seed Richard Gasquet stopped Frances Tiafoe 5-7, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3.On the womens side, Kerber recovered to beat Czech Kristyna Pliskova 4-6, 6-1, 7-5, as the German returned to action for the first time since her opening round defeat at the French Open.Kerber is fighting to hold onto her world number one ranking and withdrew from last weeks Birmingham event with a hamstring strain. She trained in Mallorca after recovering from her injury but has yet to capture a title this year or beaten an opponent inside the top 20.Roland Garros finalist Halep, who trails Kerber by just 115 ranking points, rallied to defeat Chinas Duan Ying-Ying 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, while Tsvetana Pironkova -- a 2010 Wimbledon semi-finalist -- thumped Monica Niculescu of Romania 6-0, 6-4.The Bulgarian Pironkova led Halep by a set and a break in their third-round clash though when the rains came, with the match to be completed on Thursday.

Athletics: Bolt fires to 100m victory in Ostrava

Posted:

OSTRAVA (AFP) - Usain Bolt racked up a straightforward 100m victory on the European bow of his farewell season, but likely successor Wayde van Niekerk stole the headlines in Ostrava with a world record in the little-run 300m.Bolt struggled with a stiff back and a pedestrian start to beat a weak field. For the briefest of moments, Cuban Yunier Perez thought he might have got the better of the towering Jamaican. But Bolt turned on the after-burners to win in a modest 10.06sec, leaving him another outing over 100m at next months Monaco Diamond League before his swansong at the August 4-13 World Athletics Championships in London.I have always loved coming to Ostrava, Bolt said. The great fans make this meeting a really unique one.Bolt, 30, said his back had been playing up as always. Its always an issue. My doctor told me over the years that the older I get, the worse its going to get, so I just have to really try to keep in check which is why I need to go and see him to make sure everythings smooth because it feels a little bit tight, but I didnt get injured so thats a key thing, Im happy about that. The build-up to Bolts race was nothing short of electric, with the Jamaicans self-appointed successor Van Niekerk making good on his promise to get ridiculous by setting a new best in the 300m.The 24-year-old clocked an outstanding 30.81 seconds, beating the previous world record of 30.85sec set at altitude in Pretoria in 2000 by American Michael Johnson. It was the second time the South African has usurped Johnson, having broken his 17-year-old 400m world record when racing to victory at last years Rio Olympics. Its a real honour to twice beat Johnsons records, said Van Niekerk.I hope I can continue to make babysteps to be better day by day.Van Niekerks time also shattered the meet record of 30.97sec -- previously the second fastest time ever run -- set by Bolt in 2010.Britains Mo Farah marked his last circuit outing over 10,000m with victory in 27:12.09.Since winning silver over 10k at the 2011 world champs in Daegu, Farah is on an unbroken streak of nine global final wins (the 5000m in 2011, and the double at the 2012 and 2016 Olympics and the 2013 and 2015 worlds). But he will retire from the track to focus on road racing after the world champs on home soil in August. The 34-year-old held off Kenyan Mathew Kimeli for a smart win just 4sec off Abadi Hadis world leading mark.It was my last 10km race and I enjoyed it, said Farah. I honestly hoped I could run a bit faster but the wind slowed me down even though we ran quite a fast pace from the beginning. There was, however, no joy for David Rudisha, double world and Olympic champion and world record holder in the 800m, as he aimed to break the meet record for the 1000m, another little-run distance. The Kenyan was beaten into fourth as compatriot Nicholas Kipkoech held off local hopes Jakub Holusa and Filip Sasinek to win in 2:18.51.Olympic champion Conseslus Kiprutos bid for victory in the mens 3000m steeplechase floundered with a fourth place finish behind fellow Kenyan Benjamin Kigen, winner in 8:11.54.American Christian Taylor claimed victory in the triple jump with a best of 17.57 metres, while Anzhelika Sidorova, the Russian who won European gold in 2014 but is now competing as an independent in the wake of the doping scandal that has rocked the country, romped to victory in the womens pole vault.Sidorova managed a best of 4.70m, beating out Alysha Newman of Canada, but bombing three times at what would have been a season best of 4.80.

Athletics: Van Niekerk sets new world record for little-run 300m

Posted:

OSTRAVA (AFP) - Wayde van Niekerk had promised to get ridiculous and the South African tyro hailed as Usain Bolts likely successor did just that when sprinting to a world record in the rarely-run 300m on Wednesday. The 24-year-old raced home at the Golden Spike meet at the Mestsky Stadium in the northeastern Czech city of Ostrava in an outstanding 30.81 seconds. The previous world record of 30.85sec was set at altitude in Pretoria in 2000 by American Michael Johnson. It was the second time the 24-year-old South African has usurped Johnson, having broken his 17-year-old 400m world record when racing to victory at last years Rio Olympics.Van Niekerks time also shattered the meet record of 30.97sec -- previously the second fastest time every run -- set by Jamaican sprint star Bolt in 2010.Im so pleased and grateful for this big achievement, said Van Niekerk, whose first professional appearance on the IAAF circuit was over 400m at Ostrava. Thanks to all the people of Ostrava for this wonderful meeting. Im honoured to be a small part of history.I have to rest a little but after that I hope I can continue to make babysteps to be better day by day.Running in lane five, Van Niekerk enjoyed a scintillating start that saw him catapult down the back stretch and pass Isaac Makwala of Botswana after the first 80 metres.Negotiating the bend with aplomb, the South African shot into the home straight well in the lead.As he seemed to pull up slightly, Makwala pushed but a final spurt saw Van Niekerk ease past Johnsons previous best. The result is another feather in the cap for the world and Olympic 400m champion, who this year has set a leading mark of 19.84sec in the 200m and a personal record of 9.94sec in the 100m.Van Niekerk is also the first athlete to break 10sec for the 100m, 20sec for the 200m and 44sec for the 400m, and it is little wonder Bolt himself tips the South African as his most likely successor when he hangs up his spikes come the seasons end.Van Niekerk will aim to double up in the August 4-13 World Athletics Championships, in the 200 and 400m, meaning a packed racing programme of six back-to-back days of competition.Theres still a lot of work to be done, he insisted.I have faith in my coach, I just go out and try to execute to the best of my ability. This world record is a blessing. Its a massive confidence booster, he acknowledged, dubbing it an honour to twice better Johnson.

Boxing: Joshua could face Klitschko in Vegas - promoter

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - World heavyweight champion Anthony Joshuas possible rematch with Wladimir Klitschko could be staged in Las Vegas, promoter Eddie Hearn said on Wednesday.Joshua, the IBF and WBA heavyweight champion, is waiting to see if terms will be agreed with Klitschko for another bout after the British fighters thrilling victory over the Ukrainian at Wembley in April.Hearn has held talks with Klitschkos manager Bernd Boente and told Sky Sports News: Were getting close now to identifying the real options in terms of venues and locations.Vegas has taken a little bit of a front-runner in those. I know the British fans would love to do a trip out there for Joshua-Klitschko.Nigeria is still in the mix, Dubai as well, and of course Cardiff. But like I said, Vegas has probably got its nose in front at the moment.I think in the next week were looking to present all those opportunities to Wladimir Klitschko and his team.Speaking to Bernd Boente this morning, I feel like its going to take that special event to make this fight.

Sri Lanka players told to get fit or get out

Posted:

COLOMBO (AFP) - The Sri Lankan government on Wednesday warned the national cricket team to get fit in three months or get booted out.The ultimatum came after the squad was found to be unfit for the series against Zimbabwe which starts Friday. No one has a satisfactory level of fitness, but I have made an exception this time, sports minister Dayasiri Jayasekera said.Players are selected by an independent panel for the national team, but the sports minister must give final approval before they can represent the country.Jayasekera said no member of the 13-man squad met required international fitness standards and noted that high levels of injuries were due to poor endurance.Only two players -- Dushmantha Chameera and Lahiru Madushanka - scored high marks in the yo-yo endurance test which is mainly running against the clock, a source familiar with the process told AFP. Three other fitness tests were also carried out.Controversial fast bowler Lasith Malinga who weighs 80 kilos (176 pounds) failed one test, the source said, and barely scraped through the rest. He is officially under observation.Malinga has suffered recurring injuries partly because of the poor fitness, the source said on condition of anonymity.Malinga was slapped with a fine of 50 per cent of his match fee for Fridays game and given a six-month suspended match-ban for comparing Jayasekera to a monkey and saying the minister knew nothing about cricket. The Sri Lankan board held an inquiry after Malinga publicly lambasted Jayasekera who had said many players were too fat following their failure to reach the Champions Trophy semi-finals earlier this month. The typical body fat amount for a cricketer was 16 percent, but most Sri Lankan players had over 26 percent, Jayasekera said.He has warned any player with a body fat percentage over 16 will not be allowed to represent the country.Sri Lanka Cricket announced Tuesday that Malinga had apologised and also pleaded guilty to violating his contract with the board which precludes players from making public statements.

Sri Lanka eye redemption against Zimbabwe

COLOMBO (AFP) - Sri Lanka are looking to pick themselves up as the series against Zimbabwe begins this week in Galle after a string of poor performances prompted their coach to quit.Angelo Mathews leads the Sri Lankans who take on Zimbabwe in the first of five one-day internationals on Friday as they look to get over their first-round exit in the Champions Trophy.South African Graham Ford quit as coach last week with assistant Nic Pothas taking over in an interim capacity for the clashes against Zimbabwe, whose tour will end with a single Test match next month in Colombo.Fords exit just 15 months into his four-year contract adds to Sri Lankas problems on and off the field, which are hampering preparations for the 2019 World Cup.It is beyond our control. What happens outside the cricket field, we dont think a lot about it, Mathews said on Tuesday.Fordy has been fantastic, one of the very best in the business. Sorry to see him go. But, we have to move on and look ahead to this series.Veteran paceman Lasith Malinga was this week handed a one-year suspended ban after being found guilty of insulting a minister but has been retained in the 13-man ODI squad. The speedster has been docked 50 percent of his match fee from Fridays opening game in Galle and is under six-month probation after comparing the countrys sports minister to a monkey. The minister -- Dayasiri Jayasekera -- had accused Sri Lankan players of being too fat after the team failed to reach the Champions Trophy semi-finals in England.Malinga, who returned from injury to the 50-over side in England, struggled and took only three wickets in three matches. The islanders have just won five of their 20 one-day games since August 2016 with two coming against hosts Zimbabwe during a tri-nation series triumph in November.Zimbabwe, on their first tour of Sri Lanka since 2001-2002, are led by Graeme Cremer and are trying to build momentum as they look ahead to the World Cup qualifying tournament in April next year. The African nation has slipped to 11th, a place above bottom-ranked Ireland, in the International Cricket Conference ODI rankings. They lost a five-match series at home to Afghanistan 3-2 in February.Star player Hamilton Masakadza, who has played only one of Zimbabwes five one-day games this year, is expected to bolster the batting line-up on tricky Sri Lankan pitches.Cremers leg-spin, off-spinner Sikandar Raza and left-arm bowler Sean Williams will lead the spin attack on surfaces that should turn.Coach Heath Streak blamed Zimbabwes dismal form on a lack of cricket as financial and administrative hurdles hinder progress. The problem is the volume or the lack of cricket that we have had, said the former captain. We have got to play good competitive cricket for countries to want to play against us.The first two ODIs will be at Galle, the first limited-overs matches there in 17 years. The remaining three games will be at the refurbished stadium in Hambantota. The only Test will be at the Premadasa Stadium in Colombo starting July 14.Squads:Sri Lanka (for first two ODIs): Angelo Mathews (captain), Upul Tharanga (vice captain), Niroshan Dikwella, Danushka Gunathilaka, Kusal Mendis, Asela Gunaratne, Wanidu Hasaranga, L.
