Sarfraz the hero as Pakistan squeeze into Champions Trophy semis

Posted:

CARDIFF (AFP) - Sarfraz Ahmed produced a superb captains innings following a top-order collapse to see Pakistan into the semi-finals of the Champions Trophy with a thrilling three-wicket win over Sri Lanka at Cardiff on Monday.Pakistan, chasing a seemingly modest 237 to win, slumped to 162 for seven. But Sarfrazs 61 not out and Mohammad Amirs 28 not out saw Pakistan home with 31 balls to spare after they shared an unbroken eighth-wicket partnership of 75.Man-of-the-match Sarfraz, crucially dropped twice, ended the contest when he uppercut Lasith Malinga for four.It was his fifth boundary in 79 balls and led the joyous wicket-keeper to run a semi-circle round the ground.Pakistan will return to Sophia Gardens for a last-four clash with tournament hosts England in Cardiff on Wednesday.Earlier, Sri Lanka suffered a middle-order collapse of their own on the way to 236 all out.I said to Amir to play your game, to not worry. If he scored 20 runs, which he did, we would win, said Sarfraz. But the outcome might have been very different had not Sarfraz, then on 38, been dropped when Thisara Perera at mid-on floored a sitter with Pakistan then 194 for seven.Sarfraz was missed again, on 40, when substitute Seekkuge Prasanna dropped a far more difficult chance running in from deep square leg.In the end, Sri Lanka were made to pay for a poor batting display. It was a see-saw game. Pakistan held their nerve, so credit goes to them, said Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews. They deserve it.Our bowlers were brilliant. Unfortunately we dropped catches and that cost us the game, the all-rounder added. Both Pakistan and Sri Lanka had to win on Monday to join already qualified title-holders India from Group B in the knockout stages of a tournament featuring the worlds top eight one-day international sides.India will play Bangladesh in Thursdays second semi-final at Edgbaston, with the final at the Oval on Sunday.Sri Lanka, after a below par total, didnt help themselves when Asela Guanaratne dropped Azhar Ali on nought.Azhar took 15 balls to get off the mark but fellow opener Fakhar Zaman was far more dynamic, hitting three fours in as many balls off the unorthodox Malinga. In just his second match at this level, the left-handed Fakhar completed a 34-ball fifty. But, two balls later, he fell for exactly 50 when a top-edged hook off Nuwan Pradeep was caught by Gunaratne at fine leg.It was the start of a sustained collapse, with Azhars painstaking 34 ended when he fended at paceman Suranga Lakmal and Kusal Mendis held on at a wide slip position.Shoaib Malik (11) then feathered a catch behind following an attempted pull off Malinga.Fahim Ashraf thrillingly hooked Malinga over long leg for six, but the ODI debutant was run out for a run-a-ball 15 when bowler Perera deflected a Sarfraz drive onto the stumps at the non-strikers end.But that was as good as it got for Sri Lanka.Earlier Sri Lanka, sent in by Sarfraz, were making steady progress at 161 for three while Niroshan Dickwella (73) and Mathews (39) were at the crease. But the loss of Mathews sparked a middle-order collapse that saw four wickets lost for just six runs as they slumped to 167 for seven.Only some tail-order hitting got Sri Lanka past 200 in an innings where Pakistan pacemen Junaid Khan (three for 40) and Hasan Ali (three for 43) did the bulk of the damage.Mathews, fresh from an unbeaten fifty in Sri Lankas shock seven-wicket victory over India, fell when an inside edge off Amir gave the elated left-arm paceman his first wicket of the tournament. In what turned out to be a brilliant all-round match for wicket-keeper Sarfraz, he held a superb low one-handed catch to dismiss Dickwella off an inside edge to Amir. The lone downside for Sarfraz was that he was fined 20 percent of his match fee for Pakistans slow over-rate.A similar offence on Wednesday would see him banned from the final should Pakistan beat England.

Wood relishes being England's go to man

Posted:

BIRMINGHAM (AFP) - Mark Wood is revelling in the role of being the man England captain Eoin Morgan turns to when the hosts need a wicket at the Champions Trophy.Woods one-day international best four for 33 in Englands concluding group win over Australia, which saw them knock out their arch rivals, included the prize scalps of Aussie skipper Steven Smith, David Warner and Glenn Maxwell at Edgbaston on Saturday. This tournament also saw him remove New Zealands Kane Williamson, one of the worlds best batsmen, with a brilliant delivery in unbeaten Englands win over the Black Caps in Cardiff. Its a nice feeling to have the confidence of the captain, said Wood ahead of Englands semi-final against Pakistan in Cardiff on Wednesday.I dont know if it makes me try a little bit harder, but at the moment I seem to be getting some of the best players out. Its a nice knack to have. The 27-year-old Durham quick, fit following persistent ankle trouble, said Morgans backing had been a huge confidence boost. You feel like the captain really needs you and you want to be the man who changes the game -- and thats what Ive tried to do.You lift up, push your shoulders back, puff your chest out a little bit.England have won 11 of their last 12 one-day internationals, with Woods Durham team-mate Ben Stokes hitting a thrilling 102 not out against Australia after the home side had slumped to 35 for three. Its fantastic - weve got one hell of a team, and I absolutely love being part of it, said Wood. When we were three wickets down, I thought I would have to get the pads on again like Id done in the previous game.Stokes received superb support from Morgan (87) in a match-changing stand and Wood added: When we went back out after the rain delay and Morgs hit the first ball for four, everyone just thought, Here we go, lets fight fire with fire -- I dont know if Australia were expecting that.It was a fantastic partnership from two real leaders in the team - Morgs is obviously our captain, but Stokesey is a real leader in the way he carries himself and drags everyone else along with him.Meanwhile Wood was delighted that he and Stokes were flying the flag for northeast county Durham. Its great the north-east lads are the ones carrying the team at the minute, he said with a broad grin.

Key Uber exec out as inquiry report looms

Posted:

SAN FRANCISCO (AFP) - A key Uber executive left the company Monday as the ridesharing giant prepared to release results of a far-reaching independent inquiry into misconduct and ethical practices.A source familiar with the matter said Emil Michael, a senior vice president reported to be close to chief executive Travis Kalanick, left the company.Uber was bracing for more turmoil -- with some reports saying Kalanick himself may take a leave of absence -- with a report prepared by former US attorney general Eric Holder set to be given to employees Tuesday.Ubers board met Sunday with Holder and consultant Tammy Albarran to discuss the findings and unanimously voted to adopt all the recommendations of the report, according to the source. The recommendations were not immediately known, but Uber is facing pressure to rein in its no-holds-barred management style led by Kalanick and to reform a workplace culture criticized for discrimination and cutthroat practices.Uber also faces questions about its covert use of law enforcement-evading software and tactics apparently aimed at disrupting rivals in the ridesharing business. As part of the revamping at Uber, Nestle executive Wan Ling Martello was named as an independent board member, according to a source close to the company.Michael had been linked to a number of questionable practices at Uber, media reports said, including a visit to a South Korean escort-karaoke bar and an attempt to dig up embarrassing information on journalists. An email from Michael announcing his departure said he would be replaced by another vice president, David Richter, according to the New York Times, which first reported Michaels departure.Moment of truthIts safe to say that this week will be the week we finally learn just how committed Travis Kalanick and the rest of the senior leadership team at Uber is to meaningful cultural change, said Jan Dawson, an analyst with Jackdaw Research. The report comes after a series of embarrassing revelations for the company over the past few months.Last week, Uber said it had fired 20 people following preliminary results of the investigation, after examining 215 claims of discrimination, harassment, unprofessional behavior, bullying, retaliation and physical security. The company also ousted Eric Alexander, who headed Asia-Pacific operations, after reports said he read and discussed medical information about a woman raped in India in 2014 during an Uber ride.Last month, Uber fired executive Anthony Levandowski, who came from Googles self-driving car unit now known as Waymo, for failing to meet a deadline to turn over information for an internal investigation.Waymos lawsuit contends that Levandowski in December 2015 downloaded files from a highly confidential design server to a laptop and took the data with him to the startup.Top engineering executive Amit Singhal resigned in February after the ride-sharing titan learned he ended his career at Google after a sexual harassment complaint, reports said.In March, Ubers president Jeff Jones resigned after just six months. The woes so far have not hit Ubers growth trajectory, but some analysts say its problems wont fixed without a change in leadership. The privately-held firm is valued at about $68 billion, making it the largest unicorn or venture-backed startup.Uber does not file full financial reports but indicated its bookings last year doubled to $20 billion, with net revenue totaling $6.5 billion and an adjusted net loss of $2.8 billion not counting China operations that it sold.

Hundreds mark first anniversary of Orlando mass shooting

Posted:

MIAMI, June 12, 2017 (AFP) - Hundreds of people gathered at dawn Monday in the Florida resort city of Orlando to pay their respects to the 49 people killed by a gunman one year ago at the Pulse gay nightclub. The shooting spree on June 12, 2016 by Omar Mateen -- who pledged allegiance to the Islamic State before turning his weapons on reveler -- salso left dozens of people wounded. The building, soon to be converted into a museum, opened its doors at 2:00 am to relatives of the victims and survivors of the attack for a private ceremony attended by city officials in which the names of the dead were read out loud.No matter how dark the night, the sun is always going to shine, Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer told the gathering.Outside, a makeshift memorial was erected with the rainbow flags of the gay rights movement, pictures of the slain, flowers, candles, soft toys and other offerings. The massacre was the deadliest mass shooting in modern American history, and the worst US terror attack since September 11, 2001.Forty-nine people dressed as angels, in large white wings and carrying candles, surrounded the building. The so-called Angel Force was formed days after the attack to protect mourners from anti-gay protesters. The one silver lining that we can find in all of this, is the amount of love and the amount of care that everybody has for each other, Viviana Torche, one of the people attending the memorial, told local news station WFTV.Christopher Hansen, another person paying his respects, told the Orlando Sentinel that he managed to escape the nightclub but stayed outside to help the wounded on the night of the attack. The emotion is too much for words, Hansen said.Ive come back here several times but this was different. Seeing this mural with the faces of the 49, seeing all these people here to support and remember and honor their lives, its just so beautiful.Orlando United DayLocal authorities declared Monday Orlando United Day while Florida Governor Rick Scott said June 12 would be known as Pulse Remembrance Day, with flags to be flown at half-staff across the state.Scott visited the scene of the shooting early on Monday and observed a minute of silence. This was an attack on Orlando, our state, the Hispanic community and on the LGBTQ community. It left a solemn impact on our state that we will carry with us for the rest of our lives, Scott said on Friday, when announcing the new memorial day.The majority of the victims of the shooting were Hispanic. A quarter of the 2.3 million inhabitants in the greater Orlando area are Hispanic, and half of those are of Puerto Rican heritage, according to the US census bureau.Orlando, a city of 260,000 in central Florida, is well known as the host of vast Disney and Universal Studios amusement parks and resorts.Thousands of people were expected to gather on the banks of Lake Eola in the center of the city at 7:00 pm (2300 GMT) for a memorial vigil.

WASHINGTON (AFP) - More than one in 10 people worldwide are now obese, with weight-related health problems claiming millions of lives every year, according to a major new global study released on Monday.Conducted in 195 countries over a 35-year period, the study published in the New England Journal of Medicine and presented at a conference in Stockholm is billed as the most comprehensive research to date on the subject.Obesity numbers more than doubled in 73 countries since the study launch in 1980, triggering a surge in related diseases in what the study authors described as a growing and disturbing global public health crisis. In 2015, 107.7 million children and 603.7 million adults worldwide were obese.Even though the obesity rate in children remained lower than among adults, it had grown at a faster rate during the 35-year study period, the report said.Four million deaths in 2015 were linked to having a Body Mass Index (BMI) of over 24.5, indicating a person is overweight, or of 30 or more, indicating obesity. BMI is calculated by dividing a persons weight in kilograms by their height in centimeters squared.Of those deaths, more than 40 percent involved people deemed non-obese -- indicating that being overweight, even without being obese, is leading to millions of premature deaths.More than two-thirds of deaths linked to a raised BMI were attributed to cardiovascular diseases, marking a sharp increase since 1990.People who shrug off weight gain do so at their own risk -- risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer, and other life-threatening conditions, said Dr. Christopher Murray, director of the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) at the University of Washington in Seattle, one of the authors of the study. Those half-serious New Years resolutions to lose weight should become year-round commitments to lose weight and prevent future weight gain, he said.
