Morgan confident of avoiding repeat New Zealand thrashing

Posted:

CARDIFF (AFP) - England captain Eoin Morgan has insisted his side have learnt the lessons from their men against boys defeat by New Zealand at the 2015 World Cup as they prepare to face the Blackcaps in the Champions Trophy. Two years ago, Englands woeful first-round exit from the last International Cricket Council 50-over tournament included a humiliating eight-wicket thrashing by New Zealand in Wellington.England were dismissed for 123, with Tim Southee taking seven wickets for 33 runs. The Blackcaps then piled on the agony for England by racing to their target in a mere 12.2 overs, with now-retired skipper Brendon McCullum hitting 77 off just 25 balls, including seven sixes. But England matched that aggressive approach during a subsequent 2015 home one-day international series that saw them emerge 3-2 winners over New Zealand. Now they meet again, in their second group match of the Champions Trophy -- a tournament featuring the worlds top eight ODI teams -- in Cardiff on Tuesday. They were one of the favourites going into the (World Cup) tournament and proved that against us that day in Wellington, Morgan told reporters in Cardiff on Monday as he reflected a Blackcaps side that made it all the way to the final before New Zealand lost to co-hosts Australia. It was sort of men against boys, Morgan said of Englands crushing loss. But I think its completely different now -- two years down the line.Weve got a completely new team, pretty much. However, Englands XI in Cardiff could feature five survivors from that World Cup clash, including fast bowler Steven Finn, hammered for 49 runs in two overs, mainly as a result of McCullums blazing hitting.Morgan though believes Englands experience over the past two years has imbued the side with greater self-belief when it comes to white-ball cricket as a whole. It has to do with confidence ... (and) we come into this tournament full of confidence, he said. The dominant factor in New Zealand was that they had that confidence ... whereas we didnt.Finn, not an original member of Englands Champions Trophy squad, was called up after fellow paceman Chris Woakes suffered a tournament-ending side strain during the hosts opening eight-wicket Group A win over Bangladesh at the Oval last week.He could come straight back into the side if, as happened at the Oval, England opt against playing a specialist spinner, with the short straight boundaries in Cardiff often tough to defend for slow bowlers.Morgan, who came through the ranks with Finn at county side Middlesex, said: Id have no hesitation in playing him tomorrow (Tuesday) if we felt it was the right thing to do.Meanwhile Morgan was sanguine about the prospect of playing cricket against the backdrop of recent terror attacks in Manchester and London that have, in total, killed 29 people.Saturdays attack at London Bridge took place both near the Oval and a hotel being used by some England players.Morgan, asked if the players could concentrate on the job at hand, cited the way England had defeated South Africa in a bilateral series ODI in Leeds just two days after the Manchester attack as evidence they could do that.I think we can, he said. I think we proved that in Leeds after what happened in Manchester. The ICC indicated security measures had been enhanced after the Manchester attack and Morgan was happy with the arrangements that had been put in place for his side.I havent spoken to any players from other teams in the tournament, he said. But certainly within our team, there are no concerns.

England's Finn eager to seize Champions Trophy chance

Posted:

BIRMINGHAM (AFP) - England fast bowler Steven Finn hopes to make the most of his late call-up to Champions Trophy duty when the tournament hosts face New Zealand in Cardiff on Tuesday.Finn was left out of Englands original squad for a tournament featuring the worlds top eight one-day international teams. But the 28-year-old Middlesex quick was recalled Sunday after pace bowling all-rounder Chris Woakes broke down with a side strain after during Englands opening eight-wicket win over Bangladesh at the Oval on Thursday. Its always frustrating when you are left out of squads, but you have to roll with the punches, Finn told reporters in Cardiff on Sunday. If you get too down-hearted it can affect you more.I just focused on keeping my head up and fighting my way back into the team.He added: Its obviously very sad for Chris Woakes, who is a good friend of mine, but I am glad that Ive got the call.Finn could well go straight into Englands XI in Cardiff if, as happened against Bangladesh, they opt to play just the one spinner. He sealed his return to international duty on the back of taking two wickets in front of the selectors for the second-string England Lions in a 144-run win over South Africa A at Northampton on Saturday.I knew James Whitaker and Mick Newell were there watching me, said Finn. You feel that pressure, I suppose, knowing theyre watching you to call you up for this game. But that is no different from every time I pull on an England or Lions shirt.New Zealand endured a frustrating washout in their Group A opener against Australia when seemingly well-placed for victory. The nature of this tournament is that every game is basically knockout, said New Zealand captain Kane Williamson whose superb hundred was ultimately trumped by the rain.We played some good cricket and we cant control the weather, although it is a little bit frustrating.Englands Joe Root, another of the worlds leading batsmen, made a century too in his first innings of the tournament against Bangladesh. But while the sometimes excitable Root can be goaded into error, Williamson rarely looks anything other than serene at the crease.Hes arguably the calmest man alive, said New Zealand seamer Trent Boult of Williamson. He gets more flustered on what to wear on a dinner date with his missus than he does on the field. The last time these two sides met in a 50-over International Cricket Council event, New Zealand inflicted a humiliating eight-wicket defeat upon England in Wellington during the 2015 World Cup.Not content with dismissing England for 123, the Blackcaps raced to their target in a mere 12.2 overs, with then skipper Brendon McCullum hitting 77 off just 25 balls, including seven sixes. One consolation for England is that McCullum has since retired from international cricket.Tuesdays match takes place against the backdrop of a terror attack in London on Saturday that killed seven people and injured dozens moreEngland pacemen Mark Wood and Liam Plunkett had to head down to Cardiff by bus after their cars were parked in a police exclusion zone near their London hotel.Finn insisted England were determined to play on following terror attacks that have struck both Manchester and London in the past two weeks, amid security re-assurance from the International Cricket Council. We have been briefed on how we are going to be protected, so were very comfortable that there is a ring of steel around us and everyone who is in the ground will be safe, said Finn.We are obviously sad about it, and send our condolences to those affected by it. It is a sorry state of affairs. But we will keep playing cricket and be defiant in the face of it and hope to put a smile on peoples faces here on Tuesday.

Pakistan overhaul urged after 'shameful defeat'

ISLAMABAD (AFP) - Pakistan faced calls for a total overhaul on Monday after slumping to a shameful defeat against arch-rivals India at the Champions Trophy in England. The highly anticipated match at Edgbaston proved anti-climactic as Pakistan were thrashed by 124 runs, extending their winless streak against India to three years. While Indian media rejoiced in the Mother of all Mismatches, Pakistan newspapers held nothing back in their criticism.Pakistan suffers shameful defeat at the hands of India in Champions Trophy, Green Shirts fail in every department, said Jang, Pakistans highest-circulation newspaper.Former captain Shahid Afridi was among several ex-players to call for a major shake-up in the wake of the humiliating defeat. The gap between Indian and Pakistani teams is bigger than ever India has evolved & we are way behind now, he said on his Twitter account. We need to overhaul approach, mindset & work on improving our stagnating skills and play with clear minds.Hundreds of millions of fans in the cricket-mad neighbouring countries tuned in to watch Sundays game.Indias top four batsmen all scored half-centuries -- including captain Virat Kohlis 81 -- before Pakistan, chasing a rain-revised target of 289 in 41 overs, stumbled to 164 in 33.4 overs.India have never lost to Pakistan in 11 World Cup and World Twenty20 meetings over the years. They have not succumbed since the Asia Cup in March 2014.The Indian Express called the triumph the Mother of all Mismatches, while The Times of India said it was an Opening Statement by the reigning title-holders.The Hindu headlined with India knocks the stuffing out of Pakistan, and said the recent cricketing rivalry between the two neighbours was anything but competitive.Indias batsmen pounded Pakistan into the ground, The Hindu article said.Cricket writer Osman Samiuddin slammed Pakistans demoralising loss, suggesting they were not up to the challenge.India arguably didnt get out of 3rd gear and still never looked like doing anything other than winning v v comfortably, he wrote on Twitter.Others used humour to cushion the blow.Pakistan got its tactics wrong today imo, the way to stop India from getting to 300 was to bat first and be bowled out for 150, wrote social media user Haseeb Asif.

Rain ruins Australia's run chase

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Australia face a make or break Champions Trophy showdown with England after their Group A clash against Bangladesh was abandoned due to rain on Monday.Steve Smiths side were chasing 183 to beat Bangladesh at The Oval when persistent drizzle forced the players from the field.Having scored 83-1 from 16 overs, Australia only needed to play for four more overs to be eligible to win via the Duckworth-Lewis rule for rain-affected games.Instead, Smith and his team-mates were reduced to anxiously looking at weather updates and peering upwards for any sign of a break in the slate grey sky.Unfortunately for Australia, who bowled out Bangladesh for 182, the rain became heavier and the match was called off at 2019 GMT.Australia will be cursing their luck as they were also frustrated by bad weather when their opening group fixture against New Zealand was abandoned, although on that occasion they were in a less commanding position. With England, who won their opener against Bangladesh, due to play New Zealand in the next Group A fixture, two-time champions Australia will have to beat the hosts in Birmingham on June 10 to qualify for the semi-finals.Tamim Iqbals 95 was the highlight for Bangladesh, who are winless and face New Zealand in their final group tie.Despite Iqbals best efforts, Mitchell Starcs spell of four wickets in nine balls ensured Australia had the upper hand before the rain arrived.Aware that ominous clouds were gusting in, Australia needed to get off to a fast start to have a chance of winning on the D/L rule if the required 20 overs were bowled.Aaron Finch and David Warner both crushed a pair of fours as Australia raced to 37-0 in six overs.Warner was especially aggressive, pulling one tame delivery from Mashrafe Mortaza off his hip and away to the fence in a flash.Rubel Hossain briefly stemmed the tide when the Bangladesh seamer dismissed Finch lbw with an inswinger the opener couldnt handle as he played across his pads. When Warners total reached 37 he had passed 4,000 runs in one-day internationals.Only South Africas Hashim Amla and West Indies legend Viv Richards hit that milestone quicker than Warners 93 innings. After the rain began to pour, Australia briefly had hope when the covers were taken off and the umpires announced play would start at 1930 GMT.But instead the rain returned before the game could restart and Australias hopes of victory were washed away.

Rude Britannia: Mysterious effigy of UK PM May says 'up yours' to Europe

Posted:

(Reuters) - A giant scaffold bearing the image of British Prime Minister Theresa May appeared on the cliffs of Dover on Monday, complete with a Union Flag skirt and a rude hand gesture indicating to the rest of Europe that it should go away. The iconic row of white cliffs along Britains south coast is the closest British landmark to continental Europe and the first sign of England that many sea-faring visitors see.But Dover, 27 miles (43 km) northwest of Calais in France, voted by nearly 2 to 1 to leave the European Union in last years referendum, with coastal towns in southeast England seeing some of the highest levels of immigration from the EU.May has promised to deliver Brexit and is hoping to win a strong mandate for her approach in Thursdays national election. The structure, which was erected with a crane but whose origin is a mystery, towered over trees and nearby buildings, and had been doctored to show a smiling May flashing a V-sign with her left hand.A V-sign with palm facing outwards is a sign of peace or victory, famously used by former British leader Winston Churchill. But when the back of the hand is outward, it is a cruder sign which indicates contempt. The Sun newspaper used the latter kind of V-sign on a famous front cover in 1990 which read Up Yours, Delors, in a message to the then-President of the European Commission, which invited readers to tell Jacques Delors to frog-off over his plans for European integration. Its not the only public display of a Union Flag in recent days, with the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin lit up with the flag, affectionately known as the Union Jack, in solidarity with the Britain after an attack in London Bridge by militants that left 7 dead on Saturday.May has said that she wants Britain to be a close partner of the European Union once it leaves the bloc, though one local resident said the effigy of May swearing at Europe was vulgar.Whether you agree or disagree with Brexit, it was crass, vulgar and insulting to any Europeans coming into Dover on the ferry and a ridiculous message to send to Europe when we are about to start negotiating our exit from the EU, local resident Simon Hare told local website Kent Online, which said the structure had now been taken down.

Outrage as Trump targets London mayor after attacks

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Outrage erupted on both sides of the Atlantic Sunday after President Donald Trump lashed out at London Mayor Sadiq Khan in the wake of a terrorist assault in the British capital which left seven people dead.In a series of tweets, Trump poured scorn on Khans attempt to reassure the public after three assailants smashed a van into pedestrians on London Bridge then attacked revelers with knives. At least 7 dead and 48 wounded in terror attack and Mayor of London says there is no reason to be alarmed the US president said in one message.Khan, in an interview with the BBC shortly after the Saturday night attack, had asked Londoners and visitors to be calm and vigilant. You will see an increased police presence today, including armed officers and uniformed officers. There is no reason to be alarmed by this, he said.Leading figures in the US and the UK lined up to dismiss the presidents remarks, with Washingtons acting ambassador to London coming out in support of Khan.I commend the strong leadership of the @MayorofLondon as he leads the city forward after this heinous attack, Lew Lukens said on the US embassys Twitter account. He also praised the extraordinary response from Londoners and emergency services.Khans spokesman issued a pointed statement saying that the mayor had more important things to do than respond to Donald Trumps ill-informed tweet that deliberately takes out of context his remarks.Bloodshed must endTrump initially said the attack showed it was time to stop being politically correct and get down to the business of security for our people. As the scenes of panic in London were still unfolding he tweeted that it underscored the need for his contested travel ban on several Muslim-majority nations. But later on Sunday he condemned the attacks in more conventional terms, sidestepping the spat with Khan and saying he had spoken with Prime Minister Theresa to extend Americas unwavering support. The United States will do everything in our power to assist the United Kingdom and its citizens as they work to protect their country and to bring those that are guilty to justice, he told journalists. This bloodshed must end. This bloodshed will end. As president, I will do what is necessary to prevent this threat from spreading to our shores. On Sunday The New York Times said Trump had strained foreign ties with tweets which mischaracterized the position of Londons first Muslim mayor.Mr. Trump either misunderstood what Mr. Khan had said or distorted it, the newspaper said, arguing that the tweets had further widened the presidents rift with the USs traditional European allies.America is safer when we rally our friends and allies against the bad guys rather than pick fights with the good guys, the newspaper quoted Damon Wilson, President George W. Bushs top Europe adviser, as saying.Nasty and unbecomingDavid Lammy, a Labor Party member of Parliament, tweeted of Trumps comments: Cheap nasty & unbecoming of a national leader. Sort of thing that makes me want to quit politics on a day like this. Evil everywhere we look.In the United States, former vice president Al Gore told CNN that I dont think that a major terrorist attack like this is the time to criticize a mayor who is trying to organize his citys response to this attack.Regarding the leaders plug for his contested travel ban -- which has been blocked by the courts -- Cecillia Wang, deputy legal director of the American Civil Liberties Union, tweeted We need to be outraged when the president exploits a terrible violent crime to push his discriminatory and illegal policy. One of the things that concerns me about the presidents tweets this morning were he in effect is calling for a Muslim travel ban again, even though the courts have continued to turn that down, Senator Mark Warner, the top Democrat on the Senate intelligence committee, said on television. He said Trump had had ample time to tighten aviation security, adding, Dont continue to call for this travel ban, which is, frankly... a slap in the face to Muslim Americans and others, and this in many ways may actually incite more incidents.

French private sector growth hits six-year high: survey

Posted:

PARIS (AFP) - Frances private sector growth accelerated in May to its fastest level in six years, a key survey showed Monday.Services were the main driver behind the expansion, according to the Purchasing Managers Index (PMI) compiled by Markit, a financial services firm. The PMI rose to 56.9 points in May, its highest level since May 2011, from 56.6 points in April, Markit said in a statement.Any reading above the boom-bust 50 points line indicates the economy is expanding while a reading below suggests it contracting. The sub-index for the services sector alone rose to 57.2 points above 56.7 in April, Markit said, citing a strong rise in new business which had a positive knock-on effect on jobs.IHS Markit economist Alex Gill said the trend suggested that France could see the data impact favourably on its double-digit unemployment by as much as 0.4 percentage points, with business confidence at a six-year high given current strong optimism.
