ICC confirms plans for World XI series in Pakistan

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Plans for the full resumption of international cricket in Pakistan moved forward Friday when the sports global governing body said it wanted to send a World XI to the country later this year. With the exception of Zimbabwes tour two years ago, Pakistan have had to play all of their home matches outside of the country since a 2009 terror attack on Sri Lankas team bus in Lahore. But Friday saw the International Cricket Council, following the conclusion of its annual meeting in London, announce that plans for a World XI to play in Pakistan later this year were continuing to be developed. The ICC board said it had agreed to support a three-game Twenty20 series between Pakistan and a World XI in a bid to help revive international cricket in the country. All the matches would take place in Lahore and be accorded full Twenty20 international status, the ICC said, adding further details will be announced in due course. After Pakistans stunning 180-run win over arch-rivals India in the final of the one-day international Champions Trophy tournament at The Oval last week, coach Mickey Arthur said he hoped the visit of the World XI would go ahead. Were scheduled to have a World XI in Pakistan in September for three Twenty20 games, he said.So hopefully that starts paving the way for future tours. We can only hope.Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed added: I hope this win will boost Pakistan cricket and all the (major) playing nations will come to Pakistan.Giles Clarke, the president of the England and Wales Cricket Board and head of the ICCs Pakistan task force said, in comments reported by the Guardian in March: The desire is to give the cricket-starved Pakistani supporters the chance to see some of the worlds finest players in live action.Furthermore, the terrorists cannot win and cricket must not give up on Pakistan.

Roy's bizarre exit turns 2nd T20 South Africa's way

Posted:

TAUNTON (AFP) - Jason Roys bizarre dismissal turned the second Twenty20 internationals South Africas way as the Proteas won by just three runs at Taunton on Friday. The narrow victory saw South Africa level the three-match series at 1-1 as they bounced back from a nine-wicket defeat by England in the series opener at Southampton on Wednesday to set-up a winner-takes-all clash in Cardiff on Sunday.England were on course for an unbeatable 2-0 lead while Roy (67) and Jonny Bairstow (47) shared a second-wicket stand of 110.But when Roy was given out obstructing the field -- the first time this had happened in a T20 international -- the innings fell away.Englands cause was not helped by batting second under increasingly dark skies in a match that started at 1600 GMT despite a lack of floodlights on the ground, although home skipper Eoin Morgan did field first after winning the toss.A target of 12 off the last over became four off the last ball after Liam Dawson hit Andile Phehlukwayo for a boundary. But he could not repeat the trick and South Africa had a morale-boosting victory to follow their first-round exit at the 50-over Champions Trophy, with this win achieved despite the absence of coach Russell Domingo, who had flown home after his mother was involved in a traffic accident.Durban-born Roy, dropped from Englands Champions Trophy semi-final loss to Pakistan after a run of low scores, was in superb form, hitting nine fours and going to his fifty with a six -- off spinner Tabraiz Shamsi.Bairstow fell first, chipping man-of-the-match Chris Morris (two for 18) to mid-on.And then came the turning point.Roy veered dramatically off a straight course, with the result he placed himself between the incoming throw from Phehlukwayo, which hit him on the heel, and the stumps.South Africa appealed and, after on-field umpires Rob Bailey and Michael Gough referred the decision, Roy was given out by TV umpire Tim Robinson, the former England opening batsman.Roy was clearly aghast but Morgan insisted it had been a 50-50 call.Everyone in the changing room thought it could go either way, so its not massively controversial, Morgan told reporters. You can see why the umpires gave him out. We still had me and Jos (Buttler) coming in after that so we had enough firepower and experience to win the game but we didnt.Buttler, who made his name at Taunton with Somerset before joining Lancashire, was brilliantly yorked by Phehlukwayo for 10 and Morgan was well caught in the gathering gloom by opposing skipper AB de Villiers -- whose reaction indicated hed seen the ball late.Earlier, Cape Town-born Tom Curran, a Surrey team-mate of Roy, marked his England debut with an impressive three for 33 in his maximum four overs. The tourists total of 174 for eight, with de Villiers top-scoring with 46, was a significant improvement on Wednesdays 142 for three.Curran, the son of the late former Zimbabwe international Kevin Curran, struck with just his second ball in international cricket when Reeza Hendricks bottom-edged a pull into his stumps. But fellow opener Jon-Jon Smutss brisk 45 kept the scoreboard ticking over. And star batsman de Villiers, as he so often does, upped the tempo further, with four sixes in his 20-ball innings. They included an extraordinary sweep off one knee against left-arm paceman David Willey that flew into the River Tone before he was dismissed next ball.Curran had Morris caught in the deep off a slower ball and the 22-year-old cleverly yorked Phehlukwafor a golden duck. But Farhaan Behardien added a 32 which proved more than useful.

England hope Broad will be fit for first Test

Posted:

TAUNTON (AFP) - England are optimistic Stuart Broad will be fit for next months first Test against South Africa at Lords despite a recent foot injury. The experienced pace bowler had scans on a bruised left heel after bowling only one over for Nottinghamshire in Leicestershires second innings as his side defeated their Midlands rivals in the Second Division of the County Championship this week. But with scans inconclusive, England hope the old-fashioned approach of a weeks rest will help the 30-year-old Broad regain full fitness in time for the first of a four-Test series that starts on July 6.He will now miss the four-day Championship match against Kent starting on Monday. An England spokesman added it was not yet clear if he would be fit to play for Nottinghamshire in their One-Day Cup final against Surrey at Lords on July 1, but said he would hope to be fit for the first Test at the home of cricket.Nottinghamshire coach Peter Moores said: Stuart has been assessed by the medics over the last 24 hours. They have ruled him out of the Kent game for him to keep getting treatment, and then well wait to see how he responds to that treatment.Broad, who no longer plays white-ball cricket for England, had taken 16 wickets at 20.87 in five Championship matches so far this season. He has also taken 10 wickets in as many One-Day Cup games en route to the final. If Broad, a mainstay of Englands Test attack with 368 wickets in 102 matches, plays in the final without suffering any adverse reaction, he will likely be named in the first Test squad. That would be a relief to England given the fitness problems affecting several of their other seamers.James Anderson, Broads longstanding new-ball partner and Englands all-time leading Test wicket-taker, has only recently returned from a groin injury, Chris Woakes is struggling with a side strain and all-rounder Ben Stokes has been hampered by a knee problem.

Dhawan excels before rain washes out India opener

Posted:

PORT OF SPAIN (AFP) - Shikhar Dhawan extended his excellent Champions Trophy form to the start of the West Indies tour but heavy rain forced the abandonment of the opening one-day international at the Queens Park Oval on Friday.Dhawan stroked an assured 87 and featured in an opening stand of 132 with Ajinkya Rahane (62) as the tourists reached 199 for three off 39.2 batting first when torrential midday showers curtailed their innings and no further play was possible.A no-result was declared in late afternoon when it became clear that prevailing conditions would not allow for a minimum 20 overs to be faced by the West Indies to constitute a match. After West Indies captain Jason Holder chose to field on winning the toss on a bright warm morning, Indias openers laid the foundation for a formidable total. They dominated a bowling attack that lacked genuine potency in the absence of injured fast bowler Shannon Gabriel, who has been ruled out of consideration for the first two ODIs after breaking down during the series against Afghanistan two weeks earlier.Rahane made the most of his opportunity with the experienced Rohit Sharma rested from this campaign following the Champions Trophy. He was first to the half-century mark but was also the first wicket to fall, deceived by a slower delivery from fast bowler Alzarri Joseph and offering a simple catch to Holder at mid-on.Dhawan was then joined by captain Virat Kohil and looked certain to complete an 11th ODI hundred only to fall leg-before to Devendra Bishoo 13 runs short of the landmark.Leg-spinner Bishoo, who was not considered for any of the three ODIs against the Afghans, was the pick of the bowlers with figures of one for 39 from his allotment of ten overs. As the skies clouded over India lost another wicket in attempting to accelerate with Yuvraj Singh becoming Josephs second wicket.Kohli and former captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni were playing with greater urgency when the showers first arrived with India at 189 for three off 38 overs. They resumed after half an hour but managed just another eight deliveries before the players were again chased off the field by a heavy downpour. Despite the best efforts of the groundstaff and the umpires, who were hoping to have the West Indies face 26 overs in pursuit of a target of 194 on the Duckworth Lewis System, no further play was possible. The second match of the five-game series takes place at the same venue on Sunday.

Google to stop scanning Gmail for ad targeting

Posted:

SAN FRANCISCO (AFP) - Google said Friday it would stop scanning the contents of Gmail users inboxes for ad targeting, moving to end a practice that has fueled privacy concerns since the free email service was launched.A Google statement said Gmail users would still see personalized ads and marketing messages but these would be based on other data, which may include search queries or browsing habits.Google Cloud senior vice president Diane Greene said in a blog that the free Gmail service would now follow the same practices as its corporate G Suite Gmail.Consumer Gmail content will not be used or scanned for any ads personalization after this change, Greene said. This decision brings Gmail ads in line with how we personalize ads for other Google products. Ads shown are based on users settings. Users can change those settings at any time, including disabling ads personalization.Privacy activists have long complained that the scanning of email contents amounts to unwarranted eavesdropping on users. The internet giant earlier this year reached a settlement in a class action lawsuit in the matter, but a federal judge rejected the deal as inadequate.US District Judge Lucy Koh ruled in March that the settlement was difficult to understand and does not clearly disclose the fact that Google intercepts, scans and analyzes the contents of emails sent by non-Gmail users to Gmail users for the purposes of creating user profiles of the Gmail users to create targeted advertising.Danny Sullivan, founding editor of the online blog Search Engine Land, called the move a big change for Gmail, noting that the scanning of email contents has been the biggest hit against the services since it began. But Sullivan wrote on Twitter: On the other hand, does it reassure consumers to know that Google has better info now about how to target them than by reading their emails?
