De Villiers aims for T20 success after Champions Trophy heartbreak

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - South Africa captain AB de Villiers wants the Twenty20 series against England to help soothe the Proteas wounds after their early exit from the Champions Trophy.De Villiers men did not make it out of the group stage of the eight-team one-day international tournament, their fate sealed with a thumping defeat by India at The Oval.England too were undone in their quest for Champions Trophy glory with a semi-final defeat by eventual champions Pakistan. Now England and South Africa meet in a three-match Twenty20 series, starting at Southampton on Wednesday.De Villierss captaincy was called into question during the Champions Trophy but now he is ready to lead the side at the 2019 World Cup in England.Im very excited to play in the three T20s, it was a tough few days after being knocked out of the Champions Trophy, said de Villiers at Southampton on Tuesday. To go through that phase of reflecting and hearing some of the criticism. It is never easy but I have always been the kind of guy to see the positives and see opportunity to improve and these three matches give me that opportunity as a player and a captain.I dont feel I have to prove anything; I just want to play, I feel like a youngster starting my career. I just want to score some runs again and captain this side to a couple of wins.We learnt a lot of things when it comes to playing cricket here (in England). Pakistan surprised all of us how they controlled the middle overs. We have taken some cricket things out of it but also from the mental point of view.It shows you anyone can come out on top at the end of the day. We have made quite a few mental notes and all sorts going forward to come back in 2019, I hope I will be part of that, it is part of the plan.De Villiers, a star in all three formats, has decided to miss South Africas Test series in England that follows the Twenty20 matches. The 33-year-old de Villiers, who will play for Pretoria in the newly-launched South African T20 Global League, has appeared in numerous Twenty20 leagues around the world, including the Indian Premier League and the Caribbean Premier League. But he still sees a future for Twenty20 internationals amid an increasingly congested global calendar. We dont play a lot of them. It is important for the ICC (International Cricket Council) and these franchise events to get the right balance in the future for the players to know where they are going with their career, said de Villiers.Franchise cricket is important, it played a huge part in my career, the IPL changed my life completely. It upped my skill as a player, getting used to different conditions and playing with some of my heroes. Now we have a competition at home in South Africa is great for our cricket and I am excited. There is a place for those tournaments and it is up to the big boards to get the decisions right.I have never been picking and choosing my games, it is making sure I am at my best kind of form in 2019 for that World Cup.That is the main goal, obviously there are a few stepping stones in order to get there.

Morgan hopes England new boys shine against South Africa

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - England captain Eoin Morgan is looking forward to seeing if some of his new players can star in the upcoming three-match Twenty20 series against South Africa. The hosts are resting several key men amid a packed schedule of fixtures but have several uncapped players looking to make their mark ahead of Wednesdays series opener in Southampton, with Liam Livingstone, Dawid Malan, Mason Crane, Tom Curran and Craig Overton all eager for a first taste of international action.Id like to see some of the younger guys come in and take their chance, Morgan told reporters at Southampton on Tuesday.Throughout the last couple of years we have had opportunities that have come up and we had some very good players take them.Jonny Bairstow is a great example of that and has always scored runs every time he has come in, and to grow even more strength in depth in the squad I think we need to see even more guys come in and take chances like that.Morgan would not reveal the composition of his side, but he did say all five newcomers would each get a chance at some stage during the series, which will see both England and South Africa looking to recover from disappointing Champions Trophy campaigns. It is easier to say that, within the series, everyone is going to get a game, the Middlesex batsman added. This is an opportunity, we dont have a T20 World Cup for two and a bit years, until 2020, so it is an opportunity particularly when the senior players are rested, to have a look at these new guys.We have had two sessions together, the potential the guys have is huge. The reports back we are getting form the start of the season and the North-South games, the guys did impress. The positive is we do have strength in depth and now matching that with opportunity is something we will see in the series.

England wrong to drop Roy: Pietersen

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Kevin Pietersen believes it was a poor decision by England to drop Jason Roy during the Champions Trophy, a tournament he believes the hosts should have won in their own conditions. Before the one-day competition got underway, struggling opening batsman Roy was given unequivocal backing by England captain Eoin Morgan, who said he would definitely stay in the side for the whole tournament. But after managing just 51 runs in eight ODI innings so far this season, Roy was dropped for Englands semi-final against Pakistan and replaced at the top of the order by Jonny Bairstow.Test wicket-keeper Bairstow made 43 but England, previously unbeaten in the eight-team tournament, collapsed to 211 all out in a match eventual champions Pakistan won by a commanding eight wickets in Cardiff.Everybody struggles, its a learning curve, said former England captain Pietersen, who has played alongside Roy at county side Surrey, at the launch of the South African Global League Twenty20 tournament in London on Monday.Pietersen, one of the outstanding batsmen of his generation, added: Everybody struggles, its a learning curve. Hes a youngster, hes not going to nail his whole career. You go through ups and downs, hes a kid. What hell learn to deal with is how quickly to get himself out of this bit of bad form. Is he a bad player? No. Hes a wonderful player. He shouldnt have been dropped. That was a poor decision.I think they should just have given him a run for the rest of the tournament. Im not saying they would have won that game but they should have just stuck with it.They were scoring 300 regularly and then you drop a player and you get what you get. Its not probably because of him getting dropped, because I think Jonny (Bairstow) batted ok.I wouldnt have done it, but Im not the coach or the captain. The 26-year-old Roy, like Pietersen born in South Africa, returned to form with 92 from 81 balls in Surreys One-Day Cup semi-final victory over Worcestershire last week.Roy could return to England duty on Wednesday when they face the Proteas in the opening match of a Twenty20 series at Southampton and Morgan, Englands white-ball skipper, said Tuesday: He is still the same fella. He has been working tremendously hard. In international cricket, if you are striking the ball well or are in good form it doesnt mean you will score runs.He came back for his county and scored runs and the proof is in the pudding. He looked good in the nets and did all the right things but couldnt seem to score runs.It is impressive that he has come back from this run of bad form and hopefully he continues it throughout the summer, everyone goes through a bad stage but it is how they come out of it that is important.Englands only major limited overs tournament triumph of any kind came when Pietersen was a key member of the side that won the 2010 World Twenty20 in the Caribbean.Hopes were high, however, that a team featuring Morgan, all-rounder Ben Stokes and fast bowler Mark Wood could lift the Champions Trophy and so end a 42-year wait for a one-day international success.England are a wonderful young team, said Pietersen.I know that India and Pakistan wont like it, but in strength in depth in English conditions, England should have won it.With the fire-power they have got and the players they have got, they should have won this tournament.

Du Plessis hopes Global League can halt South Africa talent exodus

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Faf du Plessis is optimistic the creation of a new Twenty20 Global League in South Africa will help prevent the countrys top cricketers leaving in search of greater financial opportunities. The combination of a relatively weak economy and the lure of the English county game has seen a number of Proteas cricketers all call time on their international careers.South Africa has a trade agreement with the European Union which means players in England are regarded as home selections under the Kolpak rule. The likes of Kyle Abbott, Rilee Rossouw, Dane Vilas, David Wiese, Simon Harmer, Hardus Viljoen and Stiaan van Zyl have all opted to play county cricket rather than continue to represent South Africa, sparking fears of a mass exodus. While financial security has been the often cited reason, there have been concerns transformation targets designed to correct the legacy of apartheid, when non-white players were effectively barred from representing South Africa, could have played a part too.But Test and Twenty20 captain du Plessis, who played for Lancashire under the Kolpak rule and has appeared in Twenty20 leagues around the world, said he hoped the new tournament would help provide opportunities currently only available outside of South Africa.I spoke about it when the Kolpak thing started happening in South Africa -- it was probably important that South Africa looked at different ways to try and keep players in the country, explained du Plessis at the eight-team Global Leagues launch in London on Monday.I think this is a huge step towards that, the 32-year-old batsman added.Players dont have to look outside anymore, from an opportunity point of view and from a financial point of view -- they dont need to go overseas and look for other stuff. This is going to be really important to keeping most of the players in the country. The November-December time frame for the new event will also mean South Africas leading players are available for the whole of a domestic Twenty20 competition.Weve always come back from long tours and there was a lot of important cricket coming up so we havent always been around to play as much domestic cricket as was needed, said du Plessis, a veteran of 40 Tests. For the whole South African team to be available to play in this tournament is the most important thing. Each one of the teams, six of whom have overseas owners, has been assigned a marquee South Africa player, based on a connection with the city concerned.Hashim Amla (Durban), Quinton de Kock (Benoni), AB de Villiers (Pretoria), du Plessis (Stellenbosch), JP Duminy (Cape Town), David Miller (Bloemfontein), Kagiso Rabada (Johannesburg) and Imran Tahir (Port Elizabeth) are the players who fall into this category.Meanwhile there will also be eight international marquee players, with England (Eoin Morgan, Kevin Pietersen and Jason Roy) and the West Indies (Dwayne Bravo, Chris Gayle and Kieron Pollard) providing three apiece in a list that also includes Sri Lanka paceman Lasith Malinga and former New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum.Their teams have yet to be assigned. You are starting to see different T20 leagues taking up different gaps during the year and current international players cant participate in all of them -- its just not possible, said du Plessis. What that does is bring in your ex-players, as Brendon (McCullum) talked about, your mercenaries.South Africa is no different to any other place. The fans would love to see Brendon McCullum, Dwayne Bravo, Kieron Pollard and all those players.

Sammy fears for West Indies fortunes as T20 comes first

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Former captain Darren Sammy has warned that leading players will continue to favour plying their trade in Twenty20 tournaments around the world ahead of representing the West Indies.Cricket West Indies pick players for their international sides only if they feature in that format domestically, meaning the likes of star batsman Chris Gayle and all-rounder Marlon Samuels are absent from the Test and one-day squads. Most of the regions top players appear in the Caribbean Premier League Twenty20 tournament but their first-class and one-day competitions often clash with far more lucrative Twenty20 events elsewhere in the world.All-rounder Sammy, who has not played for the West Indies since leading them to the 2016 World Twenty20 title in India, believes theres no prospect of the big names returning to international duty any time soon. With the current administration I dont see that happening, Sammy told BBC Radio Five Live on Monday.I cant tell a player not to play in a league when it could make them financially stable to look after their family, the 33-year-old added.West Indies won the World Twenty20 in 2012 and 2016, but have had little success in crickets other formats recently. They are currently eighth in the International Cricket Council Test rankings and ninth in the ODI standings -- a position that saw them fail to qualify for this months Champions Trophy in England and Wales. The way we structure our cricket, were not going anywhere, Sammy added.Im very scared we will be relegated to be playing against Ireland and Scotland. Its very sad for us.If you really have West Indies cricket at heart you will have the right players for all the formats playing and helping you get to tournaments, he added ahead of their upcoming tour of England.

China shames jaywalkers through facial recognition

Posted:

BEIJING (AFP) - Chinese cities are cracking down on jaywalkers by installing facial recognition kits at intersections to identify and shame them by posting their photo on public screens, state media said Tuesday. It is the latest use of the technology in China, where it has been used by fast-food chain KFC to predict orders and in public restrooms to foil toilet paper thefts. This time, cities in four provinces are using the hardware to keep pedestrians from crossing at red lights, according to the official Xinhua news agency. The technology has detected more than 6,000 instances of people crossing red lights since it was installed in early May in Jinan, capital of eastern Shandong province. The facial recognition equipment takes photos and a 15-second video of jaywalkers, whose images instantly appear on a screen, showing them that theyve been caught, Xinhua said. The photos are matched with images in a provincial police database.Within 20 minutes, the offenders photograph and personal information such as their ID number and home address are displayed on the screen at the crossroad, Xinhua said.Traffic police give the offenders the choice between paying a $3 fine, taking a half-hour course on traffic rules or spending 20 minutes helping a traffic officer.Jinan traffic police department may also publish the offenders information on its Weibo social media account.Since the new technology has been adopted, the cases of jaywalking have been reduced from 200 to 20 each day at the major intersection of Jingshi and Shungeng roads, Jinan police officer Li Yong was quoted as saying by Xinhua. The Xinhua report comes after a video appeared on social media earlier this month showing a woman being hit by a taxi on a crosswalk and then run over by a car. She later died. The footage sparked outrage at the indifference of other pedestrians and drivers who did not stop to help her.

Volkswagen Slovakia hit by first strike for wage hike

Posted:

BRATISLAVA (AFP) - Thousands of workers at Volkswagen Slovakia went on strike Tuesday for the first time over unmet demands for a 16 percent pay rise from the countrys largest private employer, a union official said.Workers beat drums, shook rattles and hoisted banners outside the VW plant in the Slovak capital Bratislava as they downed tools for the first time since the production began in 1992.It is not about the salary. It is about the decency of the company. When it has such a big profits, it should be shared with workers, striking VW worker Stanislav Galva told AFP in front of the profitable factory.Trade union chief Zoroslav Smolinsky said Tuesday that up to 8,600 of the factorys 12,300 employees were striking. He also insisted workers were prepared to strike for more than a day or two after company officials offered a wage rise amounting to around half of their demands. The average salary in the Bratislava VW plant is 1,800 euros ($2,014), excluding managers pay packets, according to the company. Slovakias average salary is 980 euros.Volkswagen Slovakia management said in a Tuesday statement they had put a new offer on the table for an 8.9 percent wage hike. They also thanked workers who they claim came to work Tuesday, although they did not say how many had stayed on the job.Union chief Smolinsky told AFP that we dont see much good will from management. But Volkswagen Slovakia CEO Ralf Sacht told reporters Tuesday afternoon that the ball was in the unions court. We are expecting the next step from the trade unions, a constructive step based on what we have put forward as an offer, Sacht said, adding that the company was prepared for an open-ended strike.VW spokeswoman Lucia Kovarovic Makayova told AFP on Monday that union demands for a 16 percent salary increase is unacceptable as it would significantly jeopardise competitiveness and the future of the business as well as job stability.A eurozone member of 5.4 million people, Slovakia is the worlds largest car producer per capita. The Bratislava VW plant produces more than 1,000 cars a day and a total 388,697 vehicles rolled off its production line last year. The plant produces Porsche Cayenne, Volkswagen Touareg and Audi Q7 vehicles, among others. The new Lamborghini Urus luxury cars will also be made using parts produced in Bratislava. The five-millionth car produced in the plant rolled off the production line last Thursday. The white Touareg was produced for a customer in Australia.Last year, just over a million automobiles were produced in Slovakian factories owned by Kia, Peugeot and VW.
