Presidency a boon for some Trump businesses

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Becoming president forced Donald Trump to resign from a slew of corporate positions, but it also appears to have netted him much more income from his Mar-a-Lago resort and from book sales.According to a financial disclosure form released late Friday, Trump earned around $37 million this year from the Florida resort -- a seven million dollar increase from last year.Since coming becoming president on January 20, Trump has travelled to the Palm Beach property often and upped the membership fees substantially. He has frequently referred to the property as the Winter White House and sought to promote the venue as an official presidential residence.Trumps trips to Florida bring with them a retinue of Secret Service agents and government staff, who are reported to stay there at US taxpayers expense. The disclosure was made in forms released by the Office of Government Ethics. They are less detailed than full tax returns, which Trump has refused to release, breaking with decades of tradition. The 98-page document shows that being president has also apparently increased Trumps earnings from sales of his book The Art of the Deal published in 1987 and that he resigned from positions in 565 companies on or around the day before becoming president. His assets range from Pfizer stocks to a drinks company in Israel, but the disclosure also showed hundreds of millions of dollars in debt.

Kohli turns off social media ahead of Pakistan clash

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - India skipper Virat Kohli admitted Saturday that he is steering clear of social media ahead of Sundays high-profile Champions Trophy final against bitter rivals Pakistan.Kohli, one of the superstars of world cricket, commands almost 16 million followers on Twitter and 14 million on Instagram. However, he is aware of the potential pitfalls of social media when India tackle Pakistan in cricket. The biggest thing is to stay off social media, Kohli said at the Oval on the eve of the big game.If youre too distracted listening to too many suggestions or players or criticism, then you cant focus on what you need to think as a sportsman first to be able to lead the team and then help the others in the team as well. The more relaxed you stay in these situations its a good thing, because it helps you take better decisions when you are composed and calm mentally.

Troubled Ronaldo eyes more silver at Confederations Cup

Posted:

KAZAN, Russia (AFP) - Cristiano Ronaldo will put speculation over his club future firmly to one side as he leads European champions Portugal into their Confederations Cup opener against Mexico in Kazan on Sunday. The 32-year-old Real Madrid superstars build-up to the tournament in Russia has been overshadowed after he was this week accused by prosecutors in Spain of defrauding the authorities of 14.7 million euros ($16.5m) in tax through offshore companies. Now the Madrid sports media is awash with headlines suggesting Ronaldo wants out of the Spanish champions, despite only signing a new contract through to 2021 in November. But for the next two weeks the main thing on the mind of the reigning Ballon dOr holder is winning more silverware in the eight-nation World Cup warm-up event. He takes this tournament very seriously and is focused, said Ronaldos team-mate Andre Silva, the striker who has just joined AC Milan from Porto. It would be a beautiful thing to have on the CV. Of course it would be a dream to win it, Ronaldo said in January, since when he has powered Madrid to glory both in La Liga and in the Champions League. It has been a dream last 12 months on the field for the former Manchester United man, who was a European champion at club and international level in 2016. More glory here in Russia will end any doubt about him winning a fifth Ballon dOr.We dont have words to describe what he represents for our country. He is an idol, even for us players, admitted veteran defender Bruno Alves, the 35-year-old who has just signed for Scottish club Rangers.Portugals triumph at Euro 2016 secured them a place in Russia, where they will be making their Confederations Cup debut against CONCACAF Gold Cup winners Mexico in Group A before facing the hosts and New Zealand.Ronaldo has scored 12 goals in six international outings since coming off injured in the Euro final, but Mexico -- winners of the Confederations Cup in 1999 -- are confident they can stop him.- Marquez still going strong -==============================It goes without saying that hes a great player. But were a great side too, and Im sure we can stop him, striker Raul Jimenez, a Portuguese league and cup double winner with Benfica, told FIFA.com.It is not just Ronaldo they will need to stop though -- winger Bernardo Silva, who missed Euro 2016 through injury, is fresh from winning the French title with Monaco and sealing a big-money move to Manchester City.A year ago, I said Portugal were going to Euro 2016 to win it. I said we were not the favourites, but that we were candidates to win it. I have the same confidence today, Portugal coach Fernando Santos said earlier this week.Mexico, who drew 1-1 at home to the United States in World Cup qualifying last weekend, will look to Real Sociedads Carlos Vela and Bayer Leverkusen striker Javier Hernandez for inspiration. They will be led by former Barcelona defender Rafael Marquez, still going strong at 38 -- while Ronaldo will win his 140th cap in the game, Marquez will be making his 139th international appearance. The match in Kazan will start at 1500 GMT and will be followed at 1800 GMT by the Group B opener between African champions Cameroon and Chile in Moscow. The Indomitable Lions, who reached the final in 2003, surprised everyone by winning the Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon at the turn of the year, while Chile won back-to-back Copa America crowns in the last two years and are spearheaded by Alexis Sanchez and Arturo Vidal. However, Arsenal forward Sanchez is a doubt, while goalkeeper and captain Claudio Bravo will miss the opening game as he recovers from a calf injury, according to the Chilean federation.

Nationalisation policy wasn't accountability, PPP tells Sharif family

KARACHI (Dunya News) – Soon after Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif presented himself before Joint Investigation Team (JIT) for Panama probe, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leaders criticised him over his remarks about the accountability of Sharif family in former Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto’s era.Shahbaz Sharif had said it is not the first time that his family has been subjected to accountability, similar situations were witnessed in the eras of PPP and military dictatorship as well.Senator Saeed Ghani responded Sharif family has never been held accountable. He stated that there were certain measures taken in former President Pervez Musharraf era, but then the Sharif family was ousted from the country with 40 suitcases following a deal.Another PPP leader Maula Bakhsh Chandio asked the Sharif family to stop misinforming people about their accountability. “Equating accountability with the policy of nationalisation for institutions is utterly inappropriate,” he said.Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his sons have already presented themselves before the JIT and handed over necessary documents. PPP leader and former Interior Minister Rehman Malik is scheduled to appear before JIT on June 23. It will be interesting to see what he has to say about the financial situation and past of the Sharif family.

Apple poaches top Sony TV executives to boost video content

Posted:

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Apple Inc has hired two long-time Sony Pictures Television executives to expand the iPhone makers push into original television programming, plunging deeper into a field crowded by Hollywood studios and online streaming services.Jamie Erlicht and Zack Van Amburg, responsible for hit shows such as Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul and The Crown, will join Apple in newly created positions to oversee all aspects of video programming, the technology company said in a statement on Friday.Jamie and Zack are two of the most talented TV executives in the world and have been instrumental in making this the golden age of television, said Eddy Cue, Apples senior vice president of Internet Software and Services. There is much more to come, Cue said of Apples video effort. The new hires demonstrate a serious commitment by another deep-pocketed technology company to produce quality television shows. Erlicht and Van Amburg have served as senior Sony television executives since 2005.But Apple did not elaborate on its strategy, leaving investors guessing how many shows it plans to distribute, how much it will spend and where the programming will be available. The company is playing in an increasingly competitive field. Amazon.com Inc (AMZN.O) and Netflix Inc (NFLX.O) have invested billions of dollars in award-winning comedies and dramas featuring A-list Hollywood stars. And social media company Facebook Inc (FB.O) has signed deals with millennial-focused news and entertainment creators, including Vox and BuzzFeed, to make shows for its upcoming video service.Apple began its move last week with reality program Planet of the Apps, an unscripted show about developers competing for venture capital funding. The series is available only to subscribers to Apple Music, a $10-a-month streaming service.VIEWER DATAApple has one huge advantage compared with other companies - 1 billion iPhones, iPads and other devices that run Apples mobile operating system and offer a broad distribution platform. The company has widely promoted Planet of the Apps across iTunes, the App Store, Apples website and elsewhere. As tech companies push further into the content business, pressure mounts on traditional media outlets that do not have the same amount of data on viewers or the ability for content to be a loss leader, said Rich Greenfield, an analyst with BTIG.These companies do not need to make money off video because they can make money other ways, Greenfield said. And they are going to have tons of data on their viewers. It is more cost-effective for Apple to pay for original content and secure licensing deals on its own than to buy a content company, said Moody’s analyst Gerald Granovsky. From a credit perspective, we’d much rather see Apple overpay to deliver original content than pay $50 billion to buy Netflix and basically compete for the same content, he said. They’ll definitely get a better bang for their buck by focusing on their Apple TV product.Greenfield said news of Apple’s hires should put to rest rumors that Apple might acquire another content company, Walt Disney Co (DIS.N). It’s pretty clear now that Apple isn’t buying Disney, he said.Disney shares were down 0.5 percent at $105.40 on Friday afternoon. Apple shares were down 0.9 percent at $143.01.For Sony, the departures come as the Japanese conglomerate revamps its movie and television studio under new Chief Executive Tony Vinciquerra. In a memo to staff, Vinciquerra suggested Apple could be a buyer of Sony programming. While we are sad to see them go, we are excited by the opportunity to work with them as partners in the future, he said.

58 presumed dead in London tower block blaze

Demonstrators gathered outside, protesting about several issues including the fire.Support not good enoughEverything possible will be done to help them, the prime minister said of the victims in a statement. She said support on the ground for families immediately after the blaze was not good enough and ordered that more staff be deployed at the scene in high-visibility clothing.May said those living in similar high-rises also want answers and ordered local authorities to complete urgent safety checks. The fire at Grenfell Tower was an unimaginable tragedy for the community, and for our country. My government will do whatever it takes to help those affected, get justice and keep our people safe, she said.May who has promised $6.4 million for emergency supplies, food and clothing, has also announced a judge-led inquiry into the disaster. There are questions about why the block was not fitted with sprinklers or a central smoke alarm, as well as whether the recent refurbishment -- including the use of cladding that was blamed for worsening previous building fires in France, the United Arab Emirates and Australia -- helped fuel the flames.May said she would be responsible for implementing the inquirys findings, while the victims legal costs would be met by the government. Everyone displaced will be housed nearby within three weeks, she promised.19 still in hospitalSome 19 patients are still being treated in hospital, of whom 10 are in a critical condition, the National Health Service said.Queen Elizabeth and her grandson Prince William visited a community centre Friday where some survivors are being housed, with volunteers inundated with donations of clothes and food. The monarch stood for a minutes silence before her 91st birthday parade on Saturday. It is difficult to escape a very sombre national mood, she said in a message marking the event. The fire forced residents to flee through black smoke down the single stairwell, jump out of windows or even drop their children from the 120-apartment building.Alhajali, who lived on the 14th floor, was a civil engineering student at West London University. He came to Britain in 2014 with his brother.Mohammad was a very amazing and kind person. He gave love to everyone, his family said in a statement. He came to the UK because he had ambitions and aims for his life and for his family. Our whole family will miss Mohammad dearly and he will never be forgotten.
