Pakistan ready to 'change history' against India

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Pakistan are ready to change the course of history in a clash thats bigger than the Ashes when they face arch-rivals India in the Champions Trophy final. Some estimates suggest Sundays match between the sub-continental cricket giants at the Oval in south London could attract a worldwide television audience of more than a billion viewers.Title-holders India will be firm favourites against a Pakistan side who were the lowest ranked of all the teams taking part in a tournament featuring the worlds top-eight one-day international sides. It was only on June 4 that India launched their title defence with a 124-run rout of Pakistan at Edgbaston.Yet even by their own unpredictable standards, Pakistans transformation since that reverse has been remarkable and on Wednesday they knocked previously unbeaten tournament hosts England out of the competition with a comprehensive eight-wicket win in Cardiff.Pakistan have yet to play a match at the Oval this tournament but in bowling coach Azhar Mahmood, who spent several seasons at his second home playing for Surrey, they have someone familiar with all the vagaries of the London ground. And the former Pakistan all-rounder insisted all the burden of expectation was now on Indias shoulders.Weve got nothing to lose -- the pressure is more on them, Azhar told reporters at the Oval on Friday. They are ranked higher than us - so everyone is talking about India, India. But I can tell you one thing -- we have come to win.India have won all three of their previous matches with Pakistan in the knockout stages of International Cricket Council tournaments to date but Azhar, 42, said there was no reason why the sequence had to be extended this weekend as well.India have the upper hand in ICC tournaments, he admitted before adding: But things can change, and this is the time for us to change the tag that we dont perform well at ICC events.History can change, and I hope we can (change it).Meanwhile Azhar said there was no hiding from the scale of a fixture which, mainly because of political pressure, rarely takes place outside of a major international tournament. It is massive, said Azhar. India refuse to play against us (in Pakistans adopted home of the United Arab Emirates). But (now) on the biggest stage it is India v Pakistan. It is like the Ashes ... it is bigger than the Ashes -- and expectation is high from both nations, crazy about cricket. The pressure is high for both sides and their countries ... it is a dream final for the sponsors and the broadcasters, he added. This is the game they want, but it is up to us how we handle the pressure on the day.And he insisted a Pakistan victory would be no great surprise. It wouldnt be a shock if we won.No one gave us a hope when we got here. We were the number eight ranked side, and no one gave us any credit. But someone asked me before the tournament who would be in the final and I said Pakistan, Azhar insisted.I believe in my boys ... if we win it would be a great gift to the whole nation.

Amir confident of being fit for Champions Trophy final

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Amir believes he is fast gaining fitness ahead of the Champions Trophy final against arch-rivals India. The 25-year-old left-armer missed Pakistans shock eight-wicket semi-final win over tournament hosts England in Cardiff on Wednesday with a back spasm. But after bowling in the nets at the Oval -- the venue for Sundays final -- on Friday, Amir told AFP: I am fast gaining fitness.I bowled in the nets and felt no discomfort and since we have one more day (to prepare) I hope the recovery will be complete, explained Amir, who took none for 32 in Pakistans 124-run defeat by India in the teams tournament opener at Edgbaston on June 4.I look forward to playing as its a big occasion, added Amir, now firmly back in the international fold after his career was halted by a ban and jail sentence for his part in a 2010 spot-fixing scam during a Test against England at Lords.Amir, who took two wickets, including that of all-time batting great Sachin Tendulkar, when Pakistan beat India at Centurion in the 2009 Champions Trophy, starred with both bat and ball in the virtual quarter-final victory over Sri Lanka in Cardiff on Monday. He took two for 53 in 10 overs as Sri Lanka were held to 236 and then made an unbeaten 28 as he and Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed (61 not out) steered their side to a tense three-wicket win with an unbroken stand of 75.But he was hardly missed on Wednesday, with fellow left-arm paceman Rumman Raees, despite making his one-day international debut, taking two for 44 as England were skittled out for just 211.Amir, however, has once again become a mainstay of the Pakistan team since returning to the side early in 2016, appearing in 47 of the teams 57 matches across all international formats following his comeback. As well as bowling in the nets on Friday, Amir received treatment from the Pakistan team physiotherapist and bowling coach Azhar Mahmood told reporters: He bowled today without any problem whatsoever. The back spasm took two days to get over, and hes better now, the former Pakistan all-rounder added. We will go with Amir if he is fit. But we dont mind -- if he is not fit, then we move on with Rumman Raees.Azhar added: We have the bench strength. Last match, when Amir was not there, people were worried about our main strike bowler not playing. But the way Rumman Raees came in and bowled, it showed we have the bench strength. We have guys who have such skill and such an ability that they can perform on any stage. It is just a matter of self-belief and confidence. I think anyone can replace anyone.

Erasmus, Kettleborough to umpire Pakistan-India final

LONDON (AFP) - South Africas Marais Erasmus and Englands Richard Kettleborough will be the on-field umpires for the Champions Trophy final between arch-rivals India and Pakistan, the International Cricket Council (ICC) announced Friday. Both officials are known for their calm demeanour, a quality that could come in useful with a capacity and raucous crowd expected at The Oval in south London on Sunday when India and Pakistan meet in the latest edition of international crickets most high-profile clash.Erasmus, a 53-year-old former Boland fast-medium bowler, will be standing in his 71st one-day international, having officiated during Pakistans eight-wicket semi-final win over tournament hosts England in Cardiff on Wednesday.Sundays match will be the 44-year-old Kettleboroughs 72nd ODI as an umpire. The former Yorkshire and Middlesex batsman was in the middle for Thursdays second semi-final, when title-holders India beat Bangladesh by nine wickets at Edgbaston.Australias Rod Tucker will be the television umpire on Sunday, with Sri Lankas Kumar Dharmasena the reserve official. Both Tucker and Dharmasena stood in each of the semi-finals.David Boon, the former Australia batsman, will be the match referee for the final, which marks the conclusion of a tournament featuring the worlds top eight ODI sides.Unlike four years ago, when India won the title by beating England in an Edgbaston match reduced to 20 overs per side by rain, a reserve day for the final has been scheduled in the event of bad weather.India began their title defence with a 124-run thrashing of Pakistan at Edgbaston on June 4.Jun 18: Champions Trophy final, The Oval (0930 GMT start).Umpires: Marais Erasmus (RSA), Richard Kettleborough (ENG).TV umpire: Rod Tucker (AUS).Match referee: David Boon (AUS).Reserve umpire: Kumar Dharmasena (SRI).

Starc out as Australia confirm Bangladesh tour

Posted:

SYDNEY (AFP) - Pace spearhead Mitchell Starc was ruled out as Australia confirmed their upcoming Test tour of Bangladesh on Friday, two years after their last visit was cancelled over security fears.Starc, who suffered a foot injury in March, was omitted from the 13-man squad to rest for Septembers one-day series in India and the home Ashes series against England later in the year. The team was also announced despite a long-running revenue-sharing dispute between Cricket Australia and the players union ahead of the expiry of their current deal on June 30.The original tour in 2015 was cancelled after a spate of attacks by Islamist extremists in the Muslim-majority nation. But Cricket Australia executive general manager Pat Howard said Australia has received security assurances from Bangladeshs cricket board and government. We will continue to work with them to finalise plans but also monitor advice from government agencies and our own security advisors about the security risk, Howard said in a statement. The trip in August and September will be Australias first Test tour of Bangladesh since Ricky Pontings team visited in 2006.Our number one priority will always be the safety and security of our players and support staff when travelling to any country, Howard said.He added that CA was still seeking a resolution to the damaging pay dispute.Selectors have chosen this Bangladesh squad irrespective and independent of the status of the MOU (memorandum of understanding), Howard said in a statement. We are working towards a resolution being in place by 30 June and look forward to continuing to support these players to perform at their very best on the global stage.Starc was ruled out after follow-up scans after the Champions Trophy indicated his previous stress fracture hadnt properly healed. The squad will be increased to 14 players to allow selectors to add a replacement for Starc.Ashton Agar was chosen ahead of Steve OKeefe as Nathan Lyons spinning partner, while all-rounder Hilton Cartwright was recalled.Ashton has continued to impress us with his form and we believe his bowling is at a level where he deserves to be playing on the highest stage, head selector Trevor Hohns said.Hohns added that Cartwrights domestic form warranted his chance to play on the sub-continent.Australia will arrive on August 18 and play a two-day tour match in Fatullah four days later. The two Tests against Bangladesh will be in Dhaka and Chittagong on August 27 and September 4.Australia - Steve Smith (capt), David Warner, Ashton Agar, Hilton Cartwright, Pat Cummins, Peter Handscomb, Josh Hazlewood, Usman Khawaja, Nathan Lyon, Glenn Maxwell, James Pattinson, Matthew Renshaw, Matthew Wade.

Harmison reveals 'demons' made him think of suicide

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Former leading England pace bowler Steve Harmison has revealed his battle with depression got so bad at the peak of his career he contemplated suicide. The 38-year-old -- who played 63 Tests in which he took 226 wickets -- says in his autobiography Speed Demons, which is being serialised in the Daily Mirror, he had gone in 2004 to see a psychologist about his demons. This was at a time when he was considered the worlds best bowler -- Australian spin legend Shane Warne has listed him as being one of the top 50 cricketers of all time.Harmison -- who is one of a series of England cricketing greats such as opener Marcus Trescothick and all-rounder Andrew Flintoff to have spoken about suffering from depression -- said he suffered from depression on long tours abroad but found it pursued him even in a home series.Fast forward to the great summer of 2004, when I was number one in the rankings for the Test bowlers, says Harmison. It was the same story -- only worse. I was in no position to celebrate. I was in no state to do anything.England won all seven Tests but as that summer went on I could feel the brightness growing darker. The horrible truth was those same feelings, which had consumed me on trips abroad, were overpowering me again -- and this time it had nothing to do with being away from home. The demons had not bothered to travel. They had come to get me at home, in the middle of a very successful English summer.I spoke to the England team doctor Peter Gregory and saw a psychologist. I was asked: Have you ever considered harming yourself? That frightened the hell out of me.The honest answer was Maybe. I cant say there havent been dark times where I thought it would be easier if I wasnt here.It was clear I was clinically depressed and medication would be the way forward. Ive been on it ever since.Harmison, who took 17 wickets in the extraordinary Ashes series win over Australia in England in 2005, is less sympathetic towards Jonathan Trott judging the language the England batsman used to describe his reason for returning early form the 2013/14 tour of Australia as not ringing true. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) said at the time his premature return was due to a stress-related illness. When it comes to Jonathan Trotts illness, its not that I question it, but Id like to know deep down what the problem is, said Harmison. The statements hes made, the things hes said, the language hes used, makes me wonder if he just pulled the ladder up because the game got too hard. When he came back early from Australia after being bombarded by Mitchell Johnson and used the word nutcase while talking about what happened, I found that puzzling.Someone who has mental health problems doesnt use that terminology. When I saw Trott interviewed after coming home, I thought Wow, hes not poorly, hes weak. He was describing someone who was mentally not very strong.I hope it was a mistranslation, but I have a nagging doubt Trott left the tour because he thought it was tough rather than because he was ill.

Once-mighty Hariri firm in Saudi is finished: sources

Posted:

RIYADH (AFP) - A once-mighty Saudi construction firm linked to Lebanons prime minister Saad Hariri is finished, having left thousands of workers unpaid, sources said on Friday. The Saudi Oger employees, most of them from abroad, suffered for months without salaries and many have already gone home.A collapse in oil revenues that began three years ago left the kingdom unable to pay private firms it had contracted. Most were in the construction sector, chiefly at Saudi Oger and another firm, the Saudi Binladin Group. But sources say problems at Saudi Oger, whose history in the kingdom dates back almost 40 years, went deeper and now it faces the end.Essentially, they are closed, said a source close to the case. They have a contract in Jeddah I think for a royal palace but they have nothing else.An angry ex-employee, who asked to be identified only as Robert, told AFP that he understands Saudi Ogers last day of existence will be June 30.In two weeks, we will no longer talk of Saudi Oger, he said. I have lost my future.Since resigning from Oger in January Robert no longer has a residency permit to stay legally in Saudi Arabia, and he cant pay his childrens school fees.He says he hasnt received his salary since July last year and is owed 160,000 riyals (almost $43,000/39,000 euros).Really its a big crisis, the source close to the case said.Following negotiations between France and the kingdom, more than 200 French citizens employed by Saudi Oger received in September the equivalent of nine months salary, paid not by Saudi Oger but by the Saudi government. But thousands of Asian employees returned home without being paid, the source said, adding that the firm had about 38,000 workers nearly two years ago.Under an aid plan announced by the kingdom, Saudi Arabia flew the workers home and helped to file claims in court against Saudi Oger. But nothing is coming, the source close to the case said.Saudi Oger could not be reached for comment. The company, part of the Hariri family business empire, built some of the most grandiose complexes in Riyadh, including the palatial Ritz-Carlton hotel.

Canada: Hackers targeted country's 2015 election, may try again

Posted:

OTTAWA (AFP) - Canadas electronic eavesdropping agency warned Friday that hackers and foreign states may try to sway its elections in 2019, after so-called hacktivists tried but failed to influence the 2015 ballot that brought Justin Trudeaus Liberals to power. In a report, the Communications Security Establishment (CSE) said hacktivists and cybercriminals had leaked sensitive government documents, and attempted to smear candidates and spread disinformation and propaganda ahead of the 2015 vote. These low sophistication attacks did not impact the outcome of the election, the CSE concluded. But it added that hacktivists are likely to try again when Canadians return to the polls in 2019.We judge that, almost certainly, multiple hacktivist groups will deploy cybercapabilities in an attempt to influence the democratic process in 2019, the CSE said in the report, adding that these groups will adapt and increasingly adopt more sophisticated approaches. The agency pointed to hacker group Anonymous, for example, leaking secret documents in 2015 on Canadian diplomatic missions and the size of Canadas spy network overseas to try to embarrass the incumbent Tories during the election campaign.Nation-states have so far not targeted Canadas 150-year-old democracy, the CSE said. But they may try in the next election, the agency said, depending on how Canadas nation-state adversaries perceive Canadas foreign and domestic policies, and on the spectrum of policies espoused by Canadian federal candidates in 2019.The report comes as US officials probe alleged Russian interference in last years US presidential elections and after French President Emmanuel Macrons election campaign was subject to cyberattacks.Canadian officials avoided naming Russia or other antagonists.Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland said interference in elections has been energetically discussed at meetings of NATO and the G7 group of leading industrial powers. We are a member of the G7, we are a NATO country, we are an influential voice and a leader on the world stage and so therefore there is a significant interest in influencing the direction of Canadian elections, Minister of Democratic Institutions Karina Gould told AFP.Regardless of who is behind these cyberthreats, its important that we can protect ourselves, she said.According to the CSE, 13 percent of countries holding national elections this year have had their democratic processes targeted, and the number and sophistication of the attacks are predicted to rise. The agency analyzed dozens of incidents over the past decade that victimized almost 40 nations. It concluded that in almost 80 percent of the cases, state actors were behind attempts to influence the democratic process. The rest mostly involved cybercriminals stealing voter information. The CSE report said political parties, politicians and the media in Canada faced the greatest vulnerability to cyberthreats and influence operations. The Canadian election system itself still relies on paper ballots. The report noted that provincial and municipal elections could also be targeted. In particular, we know that certain nation-states have core interests that can be affected by Canadian policies related to natural resources, which are often made at the provincial/territorial level, said the report.Hacktivists may begin to view subnational elections... as worthy targets.

German veteran leader, EU visionary Kohl dies

Posted:

BERLIN (AFP) - Germanys longest serving post-war leader Helmut Kohl, the father of national reunification and an architect of European integration, died Friday at the age of 87.Kohl helped a Germany that was split during the Cold War between a capitalist west and a communist east make the traumatic transition to a unified democracy. The towering figure of European contemporary history also worked with Frances Francois Mitterrand to shape the European project and pushed Germans to part with their cherished Deutschmarks in favour of the single European currency, the euro.German Chancellor Angela Merkel gave a moving tribute to her mentor, declaring that Kohl changed my life decisively.Merkel, who grew up in the communist German Democratic Republic, said that thanks to him, she, like millions of other people, could leave a life of GDR dictatorship and enter into a life of freedom. All that has happened in the past 27 years from then until today would have been unimaginable without Helmut Kohl, said Merkel, dressed in black. It will be a while before we will truly be able to measure what we have lost with his passing, Merkel said, adding that she was personally thankful that he was there.I bow down before his memory, said Merkel, who described Kohl as a great German and great European.Tributes also poured in from abroad, with former US president George H.W. Bush hailing one of the greatest post-war leaders, and European Commission chief Jean-Claude Juncker honouring him as the very essence of Europe.Former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev underlined Kohls role in ending the Cold War, noting that he was without doubt an exceptional personality who left his mark on German, European and international history.Kohl, Gorbachev said, had demonstrated a deep interest for Russia and had helped bridged East and West as he warned the West against taking on a contemptuous attitude towards Russian interests.- True friend of freedom -============================Kohl died peacefully in his bed at home in Ludwigshafen, in the southwestern state of Rhineland-Palatinate, said the Bild newspaper, adding that his wife Maike Kohl-Richter was by his side.Mourning his mentor and friend, Juncker said: Helmut Kohl filled the European house with life -- not only because he built bridges to the west as well as to the east, but also because he never ceased to design even better blueprints for the future of Europe.Bush, describing Kohl as a true friend of freedom, said: Helmut hated war -- but he detested totalitarianism even more.Working closely with my very good friend to help achieve a peaceful end to the Cold War and the unification of Germany within NATO will remain one of the great joys of my life, added the former US president.Frances President Emmanuel Macron posted on Twitter a picture of Kohl standing with the late Mitterrand, saying: An architect of united Germany and Franco-German friendship: with Helmut Kohl, we have lost a great European.- Mantle of history -=======================Born into a Catholic family on April 3, 1930 in the industrial city of Ludwigshafen, Kohl studied history and political science and rose quickly through the conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party, his ever-smiling first wife Hannelore, with whom he had two sons, by his side.He became chancellor of West Germany in 1982 and as the Cold War ended with the Berlin Wall coming down in November 1989, he moved to grab the mantle of history, as he later said, forging a political stature commensurate with his towering height.Kohl persuaded Bush to accept a larger, reunified Germany, and convinced Gorbachev to withdraw troops from East Germany. His vision was for a reunified Germany that was at the heart of an enlarged European Union and a staunch NATO member.Merkel lauded his contribution to German and European integration in 2012, on the 30th anniversary of his becoming chancellor, declaring that Europeans were united in our luck thanks to Kohls efforts.- Dont close doors on Britain -==================================Kohl considered Konrad Adenauer -- West Germanys visionary first chancellor, who allowed the nation to make a fresh start after World War II -- as an ideological forefather.Mentor to Merkel, Kohl was later ousted by his protege, who urged their party to drop the self-declared old warhorse when he became embroiled in a campaign finance scandal in 1999.After retiring from politics, he suffered from health problems, and following a serious fall in 2008, was wheelchair bound.Having also suffered a stroke, he had difficulties speaking and was rarely seen in public in recent years.Kohl married Maike Richter, an economy ministry aide 35 years his junior, after his fall, and seven years after Hannelore died. After Britain voted to quit the EU, Kohl gave a rare interview to Bild in 2016, urging the blocs member states to not apply too much pressure on London. The article, which did not include direct quotes, said he pleaded for prudence and warned against unnecessary toughness and haste and warned that it would be an enormous mistake for the EU to close its doors now.
