Diligence key in light of attack, says Aussie captain

LONDON (AFP) - Australias cricketers have been told to be extra attentive by captain Steve Smith in the wake of the attack in London that left seven dead and dozens injured late on Saturday.Australia are due to play Bangladesh -- a country where they postponed a Test series tour in 2015 over security fears -- in the Champions Trophy One Day International tournament on Monday at The Oval, whose ground is not far from where the attack by three assailants took place late Saturday.Three men rammed a van through crowds of pedestrians on London Bridge, before attacking revellers with knives -- the perpetrators were subsequently shot dead at the scene by armed police.Crickets global governing body the International Cricket Council (ICC) has released a statement confirming enhanced security measures would continue to be reviewed in line with the threat levels. You never want to see that happening around the world -- particularly when were so close to the events that happened last night, Smith told an eve of match press conference.Weve been briefed by our security team this morning, and they are comfortable with where security is at.For us, its about just being diligent with everything that we do and continuing the tournament as usual.Smith, whose side need a win against Bangladesh after their opener with New Zealand was a no result due to inclement weather, said the team had been told not to leave their hotel on Saturday. That measure was put in place for the other teams in the competition as well.Guys were a little bit concerned at the time, and didnt really know what to do, said Smith. So Frank, our security guy, just made sure we remained in the hotel and stayed nice and safe.I think everyone was on the phone letting their loved ones back home know that everyone was okay with everyone involved (in) our team.

England call up Finn as Woakes replacement

LONDON (AFP) - Steven Finn will replace injured fellow paceman Chris Woakes in Englands Champions Trophy squad, the International Cricket Council confirmed Sunday.Woakes was ruled out of the rest of the 50-over tournament, which features the worlds top eight one-day international teams, with a side strain suffered while bowling just two overs at the start of Englands opening Group A win over Bangladesh at the Oval on Thursday. The experienced Finn, 28, will join the England squad ahead of their second match of the tournament, against New Zealand in Cardiff on Tuesday. The ICC has confirmed that the event technical committee of the ICC Champions Trophy 2017 has approved Steven Finn as a replacement player for Chris Woakes in the England squad for the tournament, said a brief statement from crickets global governing body.Finn, a veteran of 69 ODIs, last played for England as recently as Monday when, on his Lords home ground, he featured in the final match of a one-day series against South Africa while Woakes was being rested with a thigh problem that healed in time for the Champions Trophy.Middlesex fast bowler Finn was left out of Englands original squad for the tournament but could go straight into the XI to play New Zealand, if as happened at the Oval, they pick just the one specialist spinner.

West Indies rout Afghans in T20 series

Posted:

BASSETERRE (AFP) - Another abject batting display by Afghanistan paved the way for the West Indies to complete a series-clinching 29-run win on the Duckworth Lewis System (DLS) in the rain-affected second fixture of the three-match T20 International series at Warner Park in St Kitts on Saturday.Set a revised target of 123 after the hosts were limited to 112 for three in a match reduced to 15 overs per side, the Afghans were routed for just 93 off 13.3 overs with fast bowler Kesrick Williams leading the demolition with figures of three for 11 to take the Man of the Match award.A day after being restricted to 110 all out off 20 overs on the way to a six-wicket defeat, this effort did little to enhance the visitors claims to be elevated to the ranks of the Test-playing nations. They now face the prospect of being whitewashed in the T20 series going into the final match at the same venue on Monday and look set to suffer the same fate in the three One-Day Internationals which follow in St Lucia.Karim Janat topscored with 20 as the wickets tumbled around him. As in the first match, much of Afghanistans misery was self-inflicted through a series of poor shots compounded by a lack of understanding in the middle which saw two run outs contributing to the ignominious slide to defeat. At one stage they had crashed to 55 for eight before Janat and the last two in the batting line-up delayed the inevitable, the match concluding when West Indies captain Carlos Brathwaite took the catch that ended Janats resistance and give Williams his best figures in T20 Internationals.I just give it everything on this pitch, said Williams after the match. I just knew if I bowled with pace in the right areas success would come my way.Brathwaite chipped in with two wickets and was especially pleased to complete a second consecutive win in challenging circumstances after the West Indies innings was interrupted after 11 overs by heavy, sustained showers which held up play for almost two hours. Its difficult to be switching on and off when there are interruptions like that and Im glad that we were able to stay focused through it all, he explained. Now we have to keep in mind that the job isnt finished as yet because we want to get another win on Monday.West Indies were 79 for two off 11 overs when the rains came with an intensity that raised fears of an abandonment. However they eventually relented and the hosts managed to get another 33 runs off the remaining four overs on the resumption. After Brathwaite chose to bat first on winning the toss, openers Chadwick Walton and Evin Lewis sought to give their team a flying start with a succession of boundaries. Both got into the twenties before falling though.Walton was caught at long-on off spinner Mohammad Nabi while Lewis pulled a short ball from medium-pacer Janat to be taken at deep midwicket.Marlon Samuels and Lendl Simmons were just getting into stride when the heavy showers swept across the ground and on the restart, Samuels departed to the bowling of Gulbadin Naib in the desperate rush for runs.West Indies retained an unchanged 11 from the first match while Afghanistan made two changes to no avail. Noor Ali Zadran replaced Usman Ghani at the top of the batting order while Dawlat Zadran came into the final eleven at the expense of fellow seamer Shapoor Zadran. It is important for our development to have more matches against teams of this calibre, said visiting captain Asghar Stanikzai. Its the only way we can improve and we hope to show a much improved performance in the final match of this series.

Kohli and Yuvraj lead India rout of Pakistan

Posted:

BIRMINGHAM (AFP) - India captain Virat Kohli and Yuvraj Singh made Pakistan pay for fluffing catches with quickfire fifties as the holders launched their Champions Trophy title-defence with a 124-run thrashing of their arch-rivals at Edgbaston on Sunday. After India made 319 for three in 48 overs, the third rain stoppage of the match left Pakistan with a revised target of 289 in 41 overs when play resumed in bright sunshine. But Pakistan, rarely up with the stiff run-rate, finished on 164, with injured last man Wahab Riaz unable to bat as India won with 44 balls to spare.Kohli, who on Saturday had dismissed reports of a rift with India coach Anil Kumble, was equally contemptuous of Pakistans attack during a blistering innings of 81 not out off just 68 balls that included six fours and three sixes.Left-hander Yuvraj, named man-of-the-match for his game-changing innings, smashed a rapid 53 while helping Kohli add 93 for the third wicket in just 59 balls. That was not the end of the run spree, with Hardik Pandya hitting sixes off the first three balls of left-arm spinner Imad Wasims last over of the innings.India smashed 72 off their final four overs as Pakistans attack wilted.Rohit Sharma (91) and Shikhar Dhawan (68) laid the platform for a big total with an opening stand of 136.I got lucky and got dropped and I capitalised, said Yuvraj at the presentation ceremony.Meanwhile an admiring Kohli, one of the worlds leading batsmen, said of Yuvraj: I felt like a club batter next to him. Hes a game changer with the bat.Mohammad Amir was the pick of Pakistans attack with none for 32 in 8.1 overs. But fellow left-arm fast bowler Wahab was hugely expensive, his wicketless 8.4 overs costing 87 runs.Wahabs day was summed up when he was unable to complete his ninth over after falling awkwardly in his delivery stride.Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed said he had no regrets over his decision to field first. We were in control for 40 overs but we lost the plot in the last eight overs, the wicket-keeper added after what was the opening Group B match for both the Asian giants in a tournament featuring the worlds top eight one-day international teams. The worrying thing for me, and it has been for a period of time, is we just do the basics wrong, said Pakistan coach Mickey Arthur. We dropped simple catches, we dont run well enough between wickets, added the concerned South African after his first direct involvement in an India-Pakistan match, world crickets most high-profile fixture. Before play, the teams officials and a crowd of 24,156 -- a record for an Edgbaston ODI -- observed a minutes silence for the victims of Saturdays London terror attack that killed seven people.Sharma was fortunate on 21 to edge Amir just beyond the grasp of diving slip Azhar Ali.Pakistan were donated a wicket, however, when Dhawan hoisted a full toss from teenage leg-spinner Shadab Khan straight to Azhar at deep midwicket.Sharma went 43 balls without a boundary in the face of tight Pakistan bowling before cover-driving and pulling Wahab for a four and a six off successive deliveries. But eyeing what would have been his 11th ODI hundred, Sharma was run out when he just failed to beat Babar Azams throw to Sarfraz after Kohlis call for one.Sharmas 119-ball innings included two sixes and seven fours.Yuvraj should have been out for eight but Hasan Ali, sliding round at long-off, dropped the two-handed catch off Shadab.Hasan eventually had Yuvraj lbw on review but it was all too late.Kohli had made 43 when he was missed by substitute Fahim Ashraf who grassed a top-edged hook off Wahab.A blizzard of boundaries followed, with Kohli flat-batting Hasan down the ground for six to complete his fifty.Pakistan opener Azhar make exactly 50 before he was caught at deep square leg by Hardik Pandya off left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja to leave his side in trouble at 91 for three. No member of Indias attack leaked runs the way Wahab had done, with paceman Umesh Yadav, who took three for 30 in 7.4 overs, ending the match when he dismissed Hasan for a duck.

Twelve arrested after 'evil' London terror attack

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - British Prime Minister Theresa May blamed evil Islamist ideology Sunday for an attack by knife-wielding men who mowed down and stabbed revellers in London, killing seven, as police said they had arrested 12 suspects.Saturday nights rampage at the popular nightlife hub around London Bridge, by three men arriving in a van and wearing fake suicide vests, was the third deadly terror attack in Britain in three months and came only days before snap elections.National campaigning for Thursdays general election was suspended for the day out of respect for the victims, who included 48 people treated in hospital, some of them in life-threatening conditions. No details have been released about the suspects, who were shot dead within minutes by police, and detectives are still investigating whether they acted alone. The 12 arrests were made in the ethnically diverse east London suburb of Barking, with Sky News reporting that a property raided by police belonged to one of the killers.May said the attack was driven by the same evil ideology of Islamist extremism behind last weeks Manchester suicide bombing that left 22 people dead, and the Westminster attack in March, which killed five. The recent attacks are not connected but we believe we are experiencing a new trend in the threat we face, she said after chairing a meeting of the governments emergency Cobra committee. She warned that perpetrators are inspired to attack by copying one another. The assailants wore fake suicide vests in a bid to increase the sense of panic as they lunged seemingly at random at the crowds gathered around London Bridge and Borough Market, which is full of restaurants and bars.Gerard Vowls, 47, said he saw a woman repeatedly stabbed, and threw chairs, glasses and bottles at the attackers in a bid to stop them. They kept coming to try to stab me... they were stabbing everyone.
