Uncapped fast bowler Ronsford Beaton is the other player omitted from the squad of 13.Afghanistan have retained the same 11 which defeated a Cricket West Indies Presidents XI in a warm-up match at the same venue two days earlier. In their only previous senior international meeting, Afghanistan defeated the West Indies by six runs at the 2016 World T20 although the Caribbean side went on to lift the title for the second time in four years.Since that upset win, Afghanistan have won ten consecutive T20 Internationals against Associate Member nations while the West Indies have won just two of nine matches since defeating England in the World T20 final 14 months ago.Teams: West Indies - Carlos Brathwaite, Evin Lewis, Chadwick Walton (wicketkeeper), Lendl Simmons, Marlon Samuels, Jason Mohammed, Rovman Powell, Sunil Narine, Jerome Taylor, Samuel Badree, Kesrick Williams.Afghanistan - Asghar Stanikzai (captain), Usman Ghani, Gulbadin Naib, Samiullah Shinwari, Mohammad Nabi, Karim Janat, Shafiqullah Shafaq (wicketkeeper), Najibullah Zadran, Rashid Khan, Amir Hamza, Shapoor Zadran.Umpires: Gregory Brathwaite (BAR), Nigel Duguid (GUY).Match Referee: Jeff Crowe (NZL).

Aisam, Bopanna put friendship on hold for cricket

Posted:

PARIS (AFP) - Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi and Rohan Bopanna once famously pleaded for peace between India and Pakistan under the banner Stop war, start tennis. However, the childhood friends will be rivals for around eight hours on Sunday when their two nations clash in the one sport which eternally unites and divides their countrymen -- cricket.Bopanna, the son of an Indian coffee planter, and Qureshi, whose grandfather was once the All India tennis champion before the 1947 partition, have their eyes trained towards Birmingham when India and Pakistan meet in the Champions Trophy.Qureshi, who will be in England for a tennis tournament after being knocked out of the French Open this week, hopes to get to the big game.Bopanna, 37, is so confident of India going all the way to the final at The Oval on June 18 that he has already bought tickets.Whatever happens, the two men, born just two weeks apart in 1980, insist that their friendship will survive, just as it has done since they met when they were 16.Rohan is like a brother to me, on and off the court, Qureshi told AFP.As countries, we have political differences but not me and him.We have respect for each other and each others families. However, I dont expect him to cheer for Pakistan and he wouldnt expect me to cheer for India. Both men played cricket as youngsters before turning to tennis full-time.Bopanna was an all-rounder who liked to open the batting in his home city of Bangalore.Qureshi also enjoyed the all-rounder role, but with ball in hand, he steamed in, right-arm fast.Their mutual love of cricket saw them suffer contrasting emotions in 2007 when they were playing doubles together at a tournament in Mumbai. The event coincided with the first World Twenty20 championship being played in South Africa.India beat Pakistan in the final by five wickets. We watched that game together in Mumbai and an hour later we had to go and play a match together, Bopanna told AFP.But once we were on the tennis court, we had to focus. We ended up winning our match. The pair have always insisted that the political differences between their two nations do not impose on their tennis. In 2010, they played at Wimbledon, arriving on the grounds wearing T-shirts bearing the slogan: Stop war, start tennis.Pakistan have beaten their longtime rivals twice in three Champions Trophy matches down the years. However, India hold the upper hand overall in international championship encounters -- they have never lost a 50-over World Cup or World Twenty20 showdown against Pakistan.Indias record reads 12 wins and just two losses. Its like roulette -- the ball cant be black all the time, sometimes it has to be red, right? said Qureshi.India are the favourites. Pakistan has a young team, so you have to be realistic. But if we win, it will be a huge upset. If we beat India and lose all the matches, the players will still go home as heroes. But if we lose to India and win the trophy, everyone will just remember losing to India.Qureshi is an enthusiastic fan of the Pakistan team and all their idiosyncrasies. When Pakistan toured New Zealand earlier this year, they shared the same Auckland hotel.I travelled on the bus with them to the ground, took photos, got their autographs, he recalled.Bopanna sees India winning on Sunday and making the final for which he has already secured tickets. It doesnt matter what the tournament is or where the game is played, its always a big match, he said.We are two great countries. Off the field, the players are friends; on it, they play to win.

Sri Lanka sweat on Mathews as Proteas duo get all clear

LONDON (AFP) - Sri Lanka face a nervous wait to discover if captain Angelo Mathews will be fit for their Champions Trophy one-day international opener against South Africa on Saturday. The all-rounder has been struggling with a calf problem and was due to have a fitness test on Friday. But Sri Lanka are set to delay any final decision on Mathews until the morning of Saturdays match at the Oval. Were going to look at him tomorrow morning as well, so the final decision will be then, Sri Lanka vice-captain Upul Tharanga told reporters at the Oval on Friday.By contrast South Africa, the worlds top-ranked ODI side, begin their quest to win the mini World Cup bolstered by the knowing both leg-spinner Imran Tahir and batsman David Miller are fully fit for the Group B fixture.Left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj proved an effective deputy when called upon by the Proteas during their recent 2-1 ODI series defeat by England but skipper AB de Villiers was glad to have Tahir available following a hamstring tweak.Hes our number one spin bowler, said de Villiers.Keshav understands his role when it comes to that. There might be a time in the tournament where we might use a different strategy, if we play against a certain opposition or on a certain field. But for tomorrow, Imran is the number one pick.He is fit and ready to go, so you should see his name on the team sheet.South Africa whitewashed Sri Lanka 5-0 in a home ODI series earlier this year but de Villiers said: They always play well in these tournaments. Were well aware of that, and they deserve our respect. They have a lot of match winners on their team.So its so much more important for us to make sure we dont think about what happened in the last series and we focus on tomorrows game.South Africa rounded off their recent series against England with a morale-boosting seven-wicket win at Lords on Monday, having ensured all the members of their Champions Trophy squad featured at some stage. As difficult as it is for me to say ... that was definitely a warm-up for us, said de Villiers.I hate to say that -- because I hate losing games of cricket. It was a bit of a catch 22 to get that right message across to the boys, (and) it was maybe a bit confusing at times. But if you do go into a series thinking that you want to play all 15 players, youre not really focusing on just winning that series -- because your mind is a little bit elsewhere.I think thats what happened. He added: We actually could have won that series, easily -- which is a great boost of confidence for us -- keeping in mind that we played 15 players, and it was a bit of a warm-up for the Champions Trophy.

Woakes's agony as Champions Trophy cut short

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - England all-rounder Chris Woakes cut a frustrated figure after injury saw him ruled out of the remainder of the Champions Trophy. The paceman bowled just two overs at the start of hosts Englands eight-wicket opening win over Bangladesh at the Oval on Thursday before suffering a side strain that has ruled him out of the rest of a tournament featuring the worlds top eight one-day international teams.Woakes was formally ruled out by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) on Friday, with the Warwickshire all-rounder saying: More than anything, its really frustrating. Its a tough one to take, right at the start of a tournament which we have been building up to as a team for a while.Weve had our eyes on the Champions Trophy for a while now as a team and we were coming into the tournament in good form. The toughest thing as a bowler is having to come off after only bowling a couple of overs.Leaving the guys out there with almost 10 men is difficult to take, so Im really pleased the boys managed to get over the line with a win.The 28-year-old feared his involvement in Englands latest bid to win a maiden major ODI trophy was over even before his bowling stint in south London was at an end.I finished two overs but it was probably on the third or fourth ball of the second over that it felt like something had become tight in my side, he said.I managed to finish the over but by the last ball I knew that something really wasnt right. To a certain extent, it felt like someone was sticking a knife in my side. That was why I didnt come back out.I knew yesterday (Thursday) that it wasnt going to be good news. It was then a matter of seeing how bad it would be on the scan results.Woakes and fellow all-rounder Ben Stokes were allowed to miss Englands recent home ODI series with South Africa to play in the Indian Premier League.Stokes has since struggled with a knee injury while Woakes was rested against South Africa as he recovered from a thigh problem. But Woakes insisted his injuries could not be blamed on the time he spent playing in the lucrative Twenty20 competition. When I came back from the IPL, my body felt as good as it can be, he said. There were no signs of my side being tight or sore before the game yesterday, so its just one of those things and you have to take it on the chin.Woakes now faces a race to be fit in time for the start of the Test series against South Africa, at Lords on July 6.He said: I will rehab it as well as I can. Ill listen to the medical staff, they know exactly what they are doing.Ive never had a side strain before but as a bowler its one of those injuries that is important not to risk.

FBI helping Qatar in 'hacking' probe: source

Posted:

DOHA, June 2, 2017 (AFP) - The FBI is helping Qatar investigate the source of an alleged hack of state media which sparked diplomatic tensions in the Gulf, a source with knowledge of the probe said Friday. An FBI team has been in Doha for the past week after the Qatari government asked for US help following the claim of an unprecedented security breach by hackers last month, the source told AFP.American support was requested and a team sent which has been in Doha since last Friday, working with Qatars interior ministry, the source said. Two other unnamed countries are also helping with the probe. The results of the investigation could be released as early as next week.Qatar has said it would publicly announce the results of the investigation.Doha launched the probe after accusing hackers of publishing false and explosive remarks attributed to Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani on the Qatar News Agency website last month. The stories quoted him questioning US hostility towards Iran, speaking of tensions between Doha and Washington, commenting on Hamas and speculating that President Donald Trump might not remain in power for long. The alleged comments were made after Trumps visit to the region at the end of last month. However, Doha has denied all the comments and said it had been the victim of a shameful cybercrime. At the same time, the tiny Gulf state said it had also been the victim of a hostile media campaign, particularly in the US over the issue of its supposed support for Islamist groups.Qatar has so far given no indication of where the alleged cyber attack, which happened on May 24, originated. But regional powers including Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates have used the comments to demonstrate that Qatar is out of line with Gulf foreign policy, especially regarding Iran.Media organisations in several countries in the region reported the emirs comments as fact, despite an official denial by Qatar.Qatari broadcasters and websites were blocked in several countries after the alleged comments were reported. And in a sign that the rift in Qatars relations with its near neighbours was deepening, one Saudi newspaper reported that members of a prominent Saudi family had demanded that Qatars state mosque, the Sheikh Muhammad Ibn Abdul Wahhab Mosque, be renamed. The demand came amid questions over the Qatari royal familys link to Abdul Wahhab, co-founder of the Saudi state. Some experts fear the current situation could trigger a repeat of the crisis in 2014, when several Gulf countries recalled their ambassadors from Doha, ostensibly over its support for the Muslim Brotherhood.Earlier this week, the Qatari emir travelled to Kuwait to meet Emir Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad Al-Sabah in what was widely seen as an attempt at mediation by the Kuwaitis.

India cricket tension mounts after resignation

Posted:

NEW DELHI (AFP) - Tension over the future of Indias head coach Anil Kumble grew Friday after a top cricket administrator resigned slamming the Indian board for its handling of the controversy.Amid a reported battle between team captain Virat Kohli and Kumble, a deadline for applications to become head coach passed this week without any announcement by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).Top names like Virender Sehwag and Australias Tom Moody have reportedly applied for the job which comes vacant when Kumbles one-year term expires after the Champions Trophy. Kumble is also in the running.Ramachandra Guha, who quit a Supreme Court-appointed four-member committee overseeing the BCCI, backed Kumble to be given an extension.Guha, in a letter written to the committee of administrators (COA) chairman Vinod Rai, criticised the BCCI as he gave reasons for quitting the post that he only took on January 30.Guha confirmed to AFP the contents of the letter published by Indian website Scroll.in.The Indian teams record this past season has been excellent; and even if the players garner the bulk of the credit, surely the head coach and his support staff also get some, Guha wrote.Kumble helped India win all five Test series since his appointment in June last year, but the BCCI has insisted it has followed routine procedure by inviting applicants for the coachs job.In a system based on justice and merit, the head coachs term would have been extended. Instead, Kumble was left hanging, and then told the post would be re-advertised afresh.Clearly, the issue has been handled in an extremely insensitive and unprofessional manner by the BCCI CEO and the BCCI office-bearers, with the COA, by its silence and inaction, unfortunately being complicit in this regard, said Guha.Due process had to be followed since Kumbles original appointment was only for one year, why was this not done during April and May, when the IPL was on?, he added. With India starting their defence of the Champions Trophy against Pakistan on Sunday, Guhas resignation has reinforced the reports of a rift between Kumble and Kohli over tactics and training. If indeed the captain and the Head Coach were not getting along, why was this not attended to as soon as the Australia series was over in late March?.Why was it left until the last minute, when a major international tournament was imminent, and when the uncertainty would undermine the morale and ability to focus of the coach, the captain and the team?, said Guha.Superstar SyndromeThe 59-year-old academic came down heavily on Indian stars including Sunil Gavaskar and Mahendra Singh Dhoni as well as the preferential treatment accorded to them by the BCCI.Guha slammed Gavaskars role in heading a company involving Indian cricketers and commentating on them as a BCCI TV analyst. He blamed the COA for not taking action on such matters. He also criticised the Grade A contract given to Dhoni despite the former captain having left Test cricket, saying the superstar syndrome is sending the wrong message.Guha alongwith Rai, banker Vikram Limaye and former Indian womens captain Diana Edulji were appointed to run the BCCI after the Supreme court sacked its top officials for failing to implement reforms.Guha has said former Indian paceman and ICC match referee Javagal Srinath or any respected male cricketer should replace him on the panel.

Waymo turning tech talent to self-driving trucks

SAN FRANCISCO (AFP) - Alphabet-owned Waymo is putting its autonomous driving expertise to work in trucking, in a new track for the unit formerly known as Google Car.Tests taking place currently at a private track in California are to be followed up by trying out rigs, with drivers ready to take the wheels, on roads in Arizona later this year, according to Waymo. Were taking our eight years of experience in building self-driving hardware and software and conducting a technical exploration into how our technology can integrate into a truck, a Waymo spokesperson told AFP Friday. The move ramps up Waymos challenge to on-demand ride service Uber, which has been investing in technology for self-driving cars and trucks as part of its vision for the future of the San Francisco-based company.Uber this week said that it fired engineer Anthony Levandowski, accused in a trade secrets suit involving files he purportedly purloined from Waymo before leaving to establish a start-up focused on self-driving trucks. The case stems from a lawsuit filed in February by Waymo claiming former manager Levandowski took a trove of technical data with him when he left to launch a competing venture that went on to become Otto and was later acquired by Uber.Waymo argued in the lawsuit that a calculated theft of its technology netted Otto a buyout of more than $500 million and enabled Uber to revive a stalled self-driving car program.US-based Tesla is also stepping up efforts in autonomous driving and is set to launch its first semi-truck in September.

93-year-old Zimbabwe President begins nationwide tour

MARONDERA (AFP) - Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe on Friday launched a nationwide 10-venue speaking tour aimed at drumming up support ahead of elections next year when he plans to seek office again. The 93-year-old leader, who appeared in better health than at some recent public appearances, spoke for an hour and a half at a rally outside Harare attended by several thousand ZANU-PF supporters. The ruling ZANU-PF party is widely seen as divided over Mugabes successor, while opposition parties are in talks to unite to try to oust him in the election. We want our party to remain united and not divided. If you are a real ZANU-PF member, be true to your party, Mugabe said at the rally in Marondera. He urged those seeking to succeed him to be at peace. The time will come, he said. Its certainly coming.ZANU-PF officials say Mugabe is focusing on youth issues at the series of interface rallies in each of Zimbabwes 10 provinces.Mugabe has slurred his words in interviews this year and struggled to walk in public, but he stood up throughout his long speech on Friday. He wore a jacket in the party colours, and arrived at the open-air venue standing on the back of a police truck and waving at cheering supporters.President Robert Mugabe is our sole candidate for 2018. We declare you our life president, Kelvin Mutsvairo, a provincial youth party leader, said in his speech.A banner at the rally called Mugabe the father of youth empowerment and urged young people to register to vote in the elections.Mugabe has ruled since independence in 1980, and ZANU-PF are often accused of election rigging and voter intimidation.

Mexico arrests three over journalist's murder

MEXICO CITY (AFP) - Three men have been arrested in Mexico for the killing of journalist Maximino Rodriguez, authorities said, after criticism over a lack of action following a wave of reporters murders.Rodriguez, a 71-year-old veteran crime reporter, was gunned down in the street on April 14 in La Paz, the capital of the northern state of Baja California Sur.He was the fourth journalist killed in Mexico this year -- a toll that rose to five on May 15 with the killing of noted drug trafficking reporter Javier Valdez in the state of Sinaloa. After Valdezs killing, President Enrique Pena Nieto vowed to go after those responsible for the epidemic of journalists murders -- 90 percent of which go unpunished in Mexico.Activists say that since 2000, 105 journalists have been murdered in Mexico and another 23 have gone missing.Rodriguezs suspected killers were arrested Tuesday as part of an ongoing investigation by state authorities and a special federal unit set up to probe journalists murders, said a statement released Thursday. The investigation indicates the killing was directly related to (Rodriguezs) profession, the state prosecutors office said.Mexican media reports said the men arrested were suspected drug cartel hitmen.Watchdog group Reporters Without Borders ranks Mexico the third-most dangerous country in the world for journalists, after Syria and Afghanistan.Rights activists blame not only the countrys violent drug cartels, but also corrupt government officials who allegedly collude in drug trafficking and enlist hired hitmen.

Nadal merciless as Djokovic toils in Paris

PARIS (AFP) - Nine-time champion Rafael Nadal lost just one game in a ruthless display to reach the French Open last 16 on Thursday, but title-holder Novak Djokovic needed five sets to survive.Nadal demonstrated why he is once more considered the overwhelming favourite at Roland Garros with a brutal demolition of Georgias Nikoloz Basilashvili. The Spaniard romped to a 6-0, 6-1, 6-0 win, narrowly missing out on becoming just the sixth man in the Open era to record a triple bagel.Perfection? I dont know about that, said Nadal, who plans to celebrate his 31st birthday on Saturday by watching Real Madrid take on Juventus in the Champions League final.I think I played very well today. The most important thing is to be through and I played my best match in a while.Tomorrow at 8.45 Im going to be in front of the TV for sure supporting my team, hoping that Real Madrid will win another time, he added.Nadal will meet compatriot Roberto Bautista Agut for a spot in the quarter-finals.Reigning champion Djokovic escaped trouble against Diego Schwartzman, the second seed rallying from two sets to one down to prevail 5-7, 6-3, 6-3, 6-1, 6-1.The 12-time major winner was embroiled in a bitter spat with umpire Carlos Ramos in the fourth set as Djokovic was warned for unsportsmanlike conduct after an earlier time violation. But Djokovic eventually proved too strong for Schwartzman, playing in the last 32 of a Slam for the first time, and goes on to face Frenchman Lucas Pouille or Spains Albert Ramos-Vinolas in round four.I expected a tough match, there were lots of exchanges from the baseline and the conditions were heavy, said Djokovic.I congratulate Diego on a great battle. He played very, very well.Goffin suffers freak injuryCanadian fifth seed Milos Raonic advanced to the last 16 when Guillermo Garcia-Lopez retired with a thigh injury in the second set.Raonic, a quarter-finalist in Paris in 2014, led 6-1, 1-0 before the veteran Spaniard, ranked 153, quit after just 28 minutes. He will play Spanish 20th seed Pablo Carreno Busta, who dumped out Bulgarias Grigor Dimitrov in straight sets, 7-5, 6-3, 6-4.Dominic Thiem, a semi-finalist last year and the only player to beat Nadal on clay this season, brushed past American 25th seed Steve Johnson 6-1, 7-6 (7/4), 6-3.Belgian 10th seed David Goffin suffered a nasty ankle injury when he got caught up in court covers, forcing him to abandon his third-round tie with Horacio Zeballos of Argentina.Goffin was leading 5-4 when he chased down the ball towards the back of the Suzanne Lenglen court. However, his right foot got horribly jammed beneath the rolled-up tarpaulin before he tumbled into the wall and a linesmans chair. The 26-year-old was helped from the court by two officials and retired in the locker room.Reigning womens champion Garbine Muguruza gained further momentum in the defence of her title with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Kazakh 27th seed Yulia Putintseva. The Spaniard closed out victory with an ace in a match that featured 11 breaks of serve in 20 games played.I think the more matches I play and the toughest victories I think gives you self-confidence, successful feeling out there, said Muguruza.I think its important with all the three matches that I played that are not easy at all.Muguruza plays French 13th seed Kristina Mladenovic, who rallied from 5-2 down in the third set to beat American Shelby Rogers, for a place in the last eight.Australian 23rd Samantha Stosur, the 2010 French Open runner-up, breezed into the fourth round with a 6-2, 6-2 rout of American qualifier Bethanie Mattek-Sands.

Four killed in Kabul street clashes over lethal bombing

Posted:

KABUL (AFP) - At least four Afghans were killed Friday as an anti-government protest spiralled into street clashes, with police firing live rounds to disperse hundreds of stone-throwing demonstrators incensed by a catastrophic bombing.Public anger has mounted after an explosives-laden sewage tanker detonated in Kabuls diplomatic quarter on Wednesday, killing 90 people and wounding hundreds of others in the deadliest attack in the Afghan capital since 2001.Hundreds of demonstrators calling for President Ashraf Ghani to step down and chanting Death to the Taliban clashed with police near the bombing site, prompting officials to beat them back with live rounds, mostly in the air, tear gas and water cannon.Kabuls Emergency Hospital said four protesters died on arrival while 15 others were wounded, some of them critically. Local media reported the death toll was as high as seven.Kabul has been on edge since the bombing, which highlighted the ability of militants to strike even in the capitals most secure district, home to the presidential palace and foreign embassies that are enveloped in a maze of concrete blast walls.Fridays killings will likely further inflame passions, as angry protesters marched through the streets carrying bloodied corpses of those killed in the clashes but they were stopped from reaching the presidential palace.Residents of the city have demanded answers from the government over the perceived intelligence failure leading to the bombing, which underscores spiralling insecurity in Afghanistan. Our brothers and sisters were martyred in the bloody attack on Wednesday, and our leaders are doing nothing to stop this carnage, Rahila Jafari, a civil society activist, said during the protest. We want justice, we want the perpetrators of the attack to be hanged to death.Other enraged protesters, carrying banners with gruesome images from the bombing, burned effigies of the president and threatened to set up protest tents around his palace. It is absolutely shameful that government forces used live rounds and tear gas against grieving protesters who are demanding justice for victims of the bombing, Afghan MP Fawzia Koofi told AFP.Excessive responseAmnesty International denounced the government use of force as an excessive and deadly response. The United Nations also urged restraint, warning opposition leaders and strongmen from trying to opportunistically use these emotional and fragile moments to foment violence for political gains.Afghanistans intelligence agency has blamed the Taliban-allied Haqqani Network for the attack.Ghani is expected to approve the execution of 11 Taliban and Haqqani prisoners, a government source told AFP, in apparent retaliation for the assault. The Taliban -- currently in the midst of their annual spring offensive -- denied they were involved. The insurgents have threatened harsh exemplary attacks in a statement on their website, including the killing of foreign hostages they hold if the government carried out the executions.Following their threat, the American University of Afghanistan appealed to the Taliban to release two professors, American Kevin King and Australian Timothy Weeks, who were abducted in August last year. The two appeared in a Taliban hostage video in January, the first proof that they were alive. The Taliban also hold Canadian Joshua Boyle and his American wife Caitlan Coleman, who had two sons in captivity after being kidnapped in Afghanistan in 2012 during a backpacking trip. The Haqqani Network, long thought to have ties to neighbouring Pakistans shadowy military establishment, is led by Sirajuddin Haqqani -- who is also the Talibans deputy leader. With more than 400 wounded in Wednesdays bombing, the injured have crowded into hospital wards and hallways as people were still searching for missing relatives.Health officials have warned that some victims may never be identified as their bodies were torn into pieces or burned beyond recognition.
