Pakistan take on Sri Lanka for a spot in Champions Trophy semis

Posted:

CARDIFF (Agencies) - Pakistan will face Sri Lanka in their last encounter of group matches in the Champions Trophy today (Monday). In what will be a virtual quarter-final at the Sophia Gardens both the sides are expected to go all guns blazing to secure a spot in the semi-finals.Pakistan had suffered a 124-run defeat against arch-rivals and defending champions India in their first group match while Sri Lanka too suffered a heavy 96-run defeat at the hands of South Africa. But it all changed rapidly over the next set of games in the group. Pakistan, being Pakistan, stunned South Africa while Sri Lanka lifted its game remarkably to get past India. Now, they’re in a virtual quarter-final with the winner set to take on England in the semi-final.Pakistan bowlers, except for Mohammad Amir, were hammered by the top-order Indian batsmen but they made amends against South Africa whose batting line-up has several match-winners like A B de Villiers and Hashim Amla.Left-arm spinner Imad Wasim (2/20) and paceman Hasan Ali (3/24) bowled beautifully to restrict the Proteas to a meagre 219 for 8.Babar Azam (31 not out) and Shoaib Malik (16 not out) got Pakistan ahead of their required run-rate to secure a 19-run win under the Duckworth-Lewis method when rain stopped play with their side 119 for three off 27 overs. Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed had attributed the win against South Africa to good bowling against a strong side and he would look for another such display against the Lankans today. For Sri Lanka, the bad news is Kusal Perera will be out of action. He is the second Sri Lankan to be ruled out of the ICC Champions trophy. However, the return of Angelo Mathews will be a big boost for them.In this game, the Sri Lankan side may play with a nothing-to-lose attitude but they must be careful of not losing their way. They have a young batting line-up and their chances of succumbing to the pressure remain high. Both Pakistan and Sri Lanka are upbeat after their upset victories and its difficult to pick a favourite for tomorrows match.History, however, favours Pakistan as they have won twice as against one by Sri Lanka in Champions Trophy. Overall, in the 147 matches the two sides have played against each other, Pakistan have won 84 as against 58 by Sri Lanka. One match was tied while four games ended as no result. Most of the matches in this event have been affected by rain and if a washed out happens tomorrow, it will be a complex calculation to decide who make it to the semifinals.Teams (From):Pakistan: Sarfraz Khan (capt.), Ahmed Shahzad, Azhar Ali, Babar Azam, Mohammed Hafeez, Shoaib Malik, Faheem Ashraf, Fakhar Zaman, Haris Sohail, Hasan Ali, Imad Wasim, Junaid Khan, Mohammed Amir, Shadab Khan and Rumman Raees.Sri Lanka: Angelo Mathews (capt.), Upul Tharanga, Dinesh Chandimal, Niroshan Dickewalla, Chamara Kapugedara, Kusal Mendis, Kusal Perera, Thisara Perera, Sekkuge Prasanna, Nuwan Pradeep, Suranga Lakmal, Lakshan Sandakan, Lasith Malinga, Asela Gunaratne, Nuwan Kulasekara.

West Indies bowl out Afghanistan for 135

Posted:

GROS-ISLET (AFP) - Afghanistan struggled against the extra pace and bounce of West Indies fast bowlers and were routed for 135 off 37.3 overs in the second of a three-match One-Day International series in St Lucia on Sunday. It was the lowest total in ODIs at the Darren Sammy Stadium venue since the first match was played there in 2002.Choosing to take first strike again on the same pitch used for the first match two days earlier, the visitors found the home sides bowlers to be an entirely different proposition as they adopted a consistent line of short-pitched bowling on the body, which exposed the technical inadequacies of most of the Afghan batsmen to such a barrage.Only Gulbadin Naib, who was last out for a topscore of 51, offered any meaningful resistance. His enterprising innings off 73 balls included two sixes and two fours, saving his side from complete annihilation as they had slipped to 51 for six when he came to the crease. All the faster bowlers -- Shannon Gabriel, captain Jason Holder and Alzarri Joseph -- shared in the wicket feast with two apiece while off-spinner Ashley Nurse wrapped up the innings with two wickets of his own, including Naib to a catch at long-off as he miscued a big hit.West Indies will be concerned though about Gabriels fitness as he was forced to leave the field in the course of his sixth over with what appeared to be a side strain. He returned to bowl two more overs but looked to be far from fully fit.Fresh from a sensational 63-run win in the first match on Friday, the visitors retained an unchanged 11 in pursuit of the win that would give them an historic first ODI series triumph against a Full Member nation of the International Cricket Council.West Indies were forced into one change with seam bowling all-rounder Rovman Powell replacing the injured Miguel Cummins from the team that capitulated to the bowling of Rashid Khan in the first match -- the leg-spinners haul of seven for 18 being the fourth best-ever bowling figures in the 46-year-history of ODIs.Despite that success, the hosts opted once more to go into the match without their specialist leg-spinner, Devendra Bishoo.

Smith advice to Stokes rebounds on Australia

Posted:

BIRMINGHAM (AFP) - It may not have been the most profound piece of batting advice Steve Smith has ever given when he told Ben Stokes during the Indian Premier League that he was losing his backside a bit.But the Australia captain could have been forgiven for wondering why hed said anything at all as England all-rounder Stokess blistering unbeaten century condemned Smiths men to an early Champions Trophy exit at Edgbaston on Saturday.Stokes played under Smiths captaincy for the Rising Pune Supergiant during this years edition of the lucrative Twenty20 IPL franchise tournament.Asked after Saturdays match what tip Smith had passed on, Stokes told reporters: He just gave a little tip out in India, something on my technique, something that he felt he could help me with.Pressed to reveal the nugget of information, Stokes added: Just that I was losing my backside a bit when I was hitting.Stokes certainly didnt lose much at the crease either in the IPL or during Saturdays clash in Birmingham.Paid a record $2.16 million to play the eight-week IPL season, Stokes was instrumental to Pune reaching the knockout phase after a brilliant debut campaign. The 26-year-old left-handed batsman and right-handed pace bowler scored 316 runs in 12 matches, with a highest of 103 not out, and took 12 wickets before a recall to England squad duty stopped him featuring in the play-offs.There was nothing much wrong with Stokess shot-making on Saturday either as he powered his way to a 108-ball century including 13 fours and two sixes -- his second hundred in three one-day international innings. In a match they needed to win to join already qualified old foes England in the semi-finals, Australia were held to a below par total of 277 for nine.Even so they were right back in the game after reducing England to 35 for three only for Stokes, with an ODI best 102 not out, and skipper Eoin Morgan (87) to share a fourth-wicket stand of 159.When rain forced an early finish, England were 240 for four off 40.2 overs and won by 40 runs under the Duckworth-Lewis method.Stokess innings was widely praised, with India captain Virat Kohli, like Smith one of the worlds leading batsmen, tweeting that the England stars flicked four off Australia fast bowler Pat Cummins was ridiculous and one of the best shots Ive seen for a whileBut Durham star Stokes was determined to stay grounded.I never feel I get too high and I never feel I get too low about things, he said.Im always looking to learn and am never happy with how I am going.I think once you get comfortable with what youre offering it is dangerous territory to be in.As well as getting tips from Smith, Stokes said playing in the IPL had helped develop his ability to play well under pressure. The whole thing with the IPL is the exposure you get to big moments in games, playing in front of a huge crowd all the time, he explained. You get exposed to those situations more.As a result, Stokes felt able to cope with Englands dire position on Saturday. At 35 for three, you can just mentally look back to a time in the past and reflect, knowing youve been in that situation before and done well, he said.As happened when overseas stars became a feature of English county cricket in the 1970s, advice given at IPL level has the ability to rebound on the provider when he and his team-mate become international opponents.Smith, however, played down his role in Stokess rise by saying: I always thought he was a good player.I think hes probably developed some smarts and, you know, timing of his innings and things like that.He played a fantastic innings, really took the game on, and was hard to stop, Smith added.

PPP welcomes PM's JIT summoning

LAHORE (Dunya News) – Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) has welcomed summoning of Prime Minister (PM) Nawaz Sharif before the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) for Panama Leaks probe in a statement given on Sunday.President of PPP Punjab chapter and former information minister Qamar Zaman Kaira hoped that Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) would not resort to agitation over the summoning. He said that PPP hopes that the federally ruling party would not repeat what it had done with the top court in the past. Kaira also welcomed the purported fact that JIT would quiz the premier with key questions concerning his businesses. The PPP leader called for PML-N to fight the ‘battle’ with arguments instead of launching adventures.Kaira claimed that the PML-N leadership is terrified at the time as leaders have always enjoyed leniency before this. He further denounced alleged humiliating of institutions by certain lawmakers of the ruling party.Reaction of PPP has come in after Nawaz Sharif was summoned by JIT on June 15 in a notification that was issued on June 8 but came to light on June 11.

US forces strike Somalia's Al-Shabaab

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - US forces carried out a strike in conjunction with Somali special forces Sunday against Al-Shabaab approximately 185 miles (300 kilometers) southwest of Mogadishu, according to the Pentagon. The Pentagon said the operation occurred at approximately 0600 GMT in coordination with regional partners as a direct response to Al-Shabaab actions, including recent attacks on Somali forces.Somalias president Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed said Somalian special forces participated in the raid against a training center for the extremist groups militants near Sakow, a district in the Middle Juba region. The mission which was successfully ended destroyed an important training camp where the group used to organize violent operations, said Mohamed. This undermines their ability to mastermind more attacks.Neither statement mentioned casualties. The Pentagon statement emphasized that the strike was carried out as part of US President Donald Trumps March authorization of American forces to conduct legal action against Al-Shabaab within a geographically defined area of active hostilities in support of (the) partner force in Somalia. In early May an American soldier was killed in a nighttime raid in Somalia. It appeared to be the first US military death in combat there since the infamous events of Black Hawk Down 24 years ago, when 18 American servicemen died in what is called the Battle of Mogadishu.US special forces have been deployed in Somalia for years. Drone and missile strikes have also been used against Shabaab commanders and foot soldiers.Since 2007, Al-Shabaab, an Al-Qaeda linked group, has been fighting to overthrow the internationally backed government in Somalia.

Macron looks to cement mandate as French elect new parliament

Posted:

PARIS (AFP) - A month after Emmanuel Macrons election as French president, voters returned to the polls Sunday for the first round of a parliamentary vote expected to give him a comfortable majority.Turnout was markedly down, reflecting a sense of resignation among Macrons opponents faced with polls showing the 39-year-old set to sweep the board, buoyed by a deep desire for political renewal. After nine hours of voting to elect the members of the National Assembly, only 40.75 percent of the electorate had cast a ballot -- one of the lowest levels in the first round of a parliamentary poll in six decades.Macron has enjoyed a political honeymoon since he beat far-right candidate Marine Le Pen to become Frances youngest-ever president on May 7.He has won praise for appointing a balanced cabinet that straddles the left-right divide and taking a leading role in Europes fight-back against US President Donald Trumps decision to withdraw from a global climate accord. But in order to push through the ambitious labour, economic and social reforms he promised on the campaign trail he needs a clear majority in parliament.A host of opinion polls show that his untested year-old Republique en Marche (Republic on the Move, REM) party could take 30 percent of the first-round vote, putting it on track to secure a landslide in next Sundays run-off round. The centre-right Republicans and the Socialists fear heavy losses after their candidates failed to reach the presidential run-off for the first time in Frances postwar history. Some predictions indicate REM could win as many as 400 seats in the 577-seat chamber, with voters seeking to give the new president a strong mandate. The party is already leading in 10 of 11 French overseas constituencies, which held their first-round vote last weekend. On Sunday, Macron posed for selfies with well-wishers after voting in the northern resort of Le Touquet where he and his 64-year-old wife Brigitte have a home.Few MPs are expected to be elected in the first round. If no candidate wins over 50 percent, the two top-placed contenders go into the second round -- along with any other candidate who garners at least 12.5 percent of registered voters.Polling stations in the largest cities are open until 8:00 pm (1800 GMT) with exit polls released immediately afterwards.More than 50,000 police were on patrol in a country still jittery after a wave of jihadist attacks that have killed more than 230 people since 2015.In the latest incident, a 40-year-old self-radicalised Algerian was shot and wounded after he attacked a policeman with a hammer outside Pariss Notre Dame cathedral on Tuesday.Political novicesMacron, who had never held elected office before becoming president, has run novices seeking to emulate his success in around 200 constituencies -- part of his bid to inject new blood in French politics. They include Marie Sara, a retired bullfighter, who is taking on Gilbert Collard, a senior member of Le Pens National Front in southern France. The Socialists demise could come into sharp focus if its leader Jean-Christophe Cambadelis, 65, is ousted from his Paris seat by REM junior minister Mounir Mahjoubi, who is just 33.Macron is also trying to usher in an era of cleaner politics. His governments first bill proposes to ban lawmakers from employing family members or performing consultancy work while in office. The measures follow the scandal that destroyed the presidential bid of Republicans candidate Francois Fillon, who has been charged over payments to his wife and two of his children for suspected fake jobs as parliamentary assistants.Fillon denies the charges. Two parties, Le Pens National Front and the small centrist MoDem party, an REM ally, are meanwhile under investigation over alleged expenses fraud at the European Parliament. One of Macrons ministers who is running for re-election in Brittany, Richard Ferrand, is also being probed over a property deal involving his girlfriend.‘The only opposition’Le Pens party looks set to struggle to win the 15 seats it would need to form a parliamentary group, a result that would be another deep disappointment after her defeat by Macron. But this week she struck a bullish note, telling AFP in the northern town of Henin-Beaumont where she is running for a seat, that with other parties likely to agree to work with Macron, we will be the only opposition force. The radical-left France Insoumise (France Unbowed) party of Jean-Luc Melenchon is also hoping to perform strongly.Macron has urged voters to back his reform proposals including an overhaul of the rigid rules governing the job market, blamed by many economists for holding back growth. The president was economy minister in the Socialist government that began loosening the labour laws last year, sparking mass demonstrations that lasted for months.Watch video report:

Hafeez doesn't mind 'unpredictable' Pakistan tag

Posted:

CARDIFF (AFP) - Mohammad Hafeez has no problems with Pakistan being known as unpredictable, saying he loves the tag that is so often applied to the team. The Pakistan all-rounder is set to feature in a virtual Champions Trophy quarter-final against Sri Lanka when the two sides meet for the concluding Group B match in Cardiff on Monday.Whichever team wins will advance into the semi-finals of an event featuring the worlds top eight one-day international teams, with the losers eliminated from the mini World Cup.The cliche that you can never be sure which Pakistan team will turn up is one the current side have embraced at this tournament.Their campaign started with a miserable 124-run thrashing by arch-rivals and title-holders India, which saw Pakistan utterly outplayed in all aspects of the game to the dismay of their fans at a packed Edgbaston. But just three days later they went from zeroes to heroes when they returned to the Birmingham ground to beat South Africa, the worlds top-ranked ODI side by 19 runs on Duckworth/Lewis.Once again there was much talk of the unpredictable Pakistan.AggressiveBut Hafeez, a veteran of 187 ODIs, told reporters in Cardiff on Sunday: To be honest, Im always a fan of that tag, that were an unpredictable team.As a team, were always very aggressive.Yes, we had some of the days which were not nice, and I think the first game was one of those where we all tried our level-best but things didnt work for us, the 36-year-old top-order batsman and off-spinner added. And the next game, like it was a totally different team effort. As a team, we are always like that, and I love that tag always.Pakistans unrivalled ability to go from the simply awful to the sublime has long been a feature of their play.As far as Hafeez is concerned, the teams reputation dates back to Pakistans remarkable 1992 World Cup campaign. They were bowled out for just 74 by England in a group match in Adelaide before rain spared Pakistan a defeat that would have stopped them getting to the semi-finals.As it was, under the inspiring captaincy of legendary all-rounder Imran Khan, who promised his team would fight like cornered tigers, Pakistan made it all the way to the final where, with left-arm fast bowler Wasim Akram in brilliant form, they beat England by 22 runs in Melbourne. It remains the only time Pakistan have won the World Cup and Hafeez said that was where they picked up the unpredictable tag.If you see the history of Pakistan cricket from there till now, were always unpredictable, he said.We have the talent, but still you never know when it comes.Thats something the opposition always think about. They never take us lightly.Hafeez believes the winner takes all nature of Mondays match will suit Pakistan. The situation in front of us is very clear -- we have to win the game, everything else is just irrelevant, he said. This year has seen Hafeez again contributing with ball as well as bat, having remodelled his action after a period of suspension for an illegal delivery.I was missing that part of the game because that was something (bowling) that I really wanted to do whenever I played cricket, he explained. Its more enjoyable for myself and also its working for the team. That is always great.

Nadal wins French Open title for record 10th time

Posted:

PARIS (AFP) - Rafael Nadal coasted to a record 10th French Open title on Sunday, demolishing Stan Wawrinka in a brutally one-sided final which also earned the Spaniard a 15th Grand Slam crown.Nadal, 31, triumphed 6-2, 6-3, 6-1 to become the first man in history to win the same major 10 times. His collection of Slams now stands just three behind great rival Roger Federer, a staggering statistic coming just a year after he quit Roland Garros with a wrist injury.Playing in his 22nd Grand Slam final, Nadal triumphed in Paris without dropping a set for a third time.He also lost just 35 games in total and only six in the final, his most comprehensive victory since allowing Roger Federer four games in the 2008 final. Its really incredible. To win La Decima is very, very special, said Nadal.I am very emotional. The feeling I have is impossible to describe. Its difficult to compare with other tournaments but the nerves and adrenaline I feel, its like no other place.Nadal was joined on the presentation by his uncle Toni, his coach since boyhood, who is stepping down at the end of the year.Without my uncle I would not have won 10 trophies, said Nadal who will rise to two in the world rankings on Monday. For me to be here for many years is difficult to describe. I come back and see people I have a good relationship with and its very special.Rafa, just too goodIts difficult for me to compare this to any other event. You are always going to be in my heart.Wawrinka, bidding for a fourth Grand Slam title, hailed Nadal as an opponent and sportsman.Rafa, I have nothing to say -- you were too good, said third seed Wawrinka. You are a great example and its always been an honour to play against you.Once Hollywood A-lister Nicole Kidman had helped unbox the Coupe des Mousquetaires to a crowd already wilting in 30-degree heat, the final was underway. It was the 22nd Slam finale for Nadal; just the fourth for Wawrinka, the oldest man in the championship match in 44 years.Sunday was also the first time since 1969 that the Roland Garros final had featured two men over 30.Despite having spent more than five hours on court getting to the final, 2015 champion Wawrinka had the first break point in the third game. The 32-year-old couldnt take it and it proved to be the only break point he earned all afternoon. From there, it was all downhill.Nadal was unable to convert four break points in the fourth game.No matter as he broke through for 4-2 and then went to set point in the eighth game after a relentless forehand barrage sapped the will out of Wawrinka.A backhand which sailed long gave Nadal the first set with the Spaniard having crunched 10 winners to Wawrinkas four while committing half the unforced errors.Nadal forced Wawrinka into another forehand error to break for 2-0 in the second set before the Swiss halted a run of seven games lost with a hold for 1-3.But the song remained the same, Nadal taking the set in the ninth game, just moments after Wawrinka, who knocked out world number one Andy Murray in the semis, had destroyed a racquet in utter frustration.First game of the third set and Nadal broke again as the man who stunned him in the 2014 Australian Open final suffered further damage.Nadal was soon a double break to the good for 4-1, held for 5-1 and then claimed a huge slice of history when Wawrinka limply dropped a backhand into the net.
