Iran aiming for nuclear accord: foreign minister

Posted:

BRUSSELS (AFP) - Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said he had good discussions Monday with EU foreign affairs chief Catherine Ashton and Tehran was committed to an accord over its contested nuclear programme.Iran wants progress on the issue, Zarif was cited as saying by the Belga state news agency after a meeting with Belgian Foreign Minister Didier Reynders. He said he was fairly optimistic after talks earlier with Ashton that Iran and the five permanent UN Security Council members -- Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States -- plus Germany could reach a deal on Tehran's nuclear programme by a November deadline.EU officials said earlier that there would be no statement on Monday's Ashton-Zarif talks which they described as a fairly standard meeting.Foreign Minister Zarif had come to Brussels to discuss progress to date and how to take the process forward after the latest round of talks in Vienna earlier this month, a spokesman said.Ashton has overseen the talks between Iran and the major powers on reaching a comprehensive deal which would end a decade-long dispute over Tehran's nuclear programme. The West suspects Iran wants to acquire nuclear weapons but Tehran insists the programme it is purely for peaceful purposes.A July deadline passed without an accord but was extended to November 24.Iran's official IRNA news agency earlier Monday cited one of Zarif's deputies, Abbas Araqchi, as saying the suggestion of an impasse in the negotiations is not correct. There are key questions and if we answer these, it will address other issues as well. Hopefully we can reach a common understanding by November. In exchange for accepting curbs on its nuclear activities, Iran wants a vast array of US, EU and UN sanctions to be lifted. The parties are expected to meet again on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York later this month.

10 Libya troops killed in clashes with jihadists: army

BENGHAZI (AFP) - Jihadist gunmen clashed on Monday with Libyan troops in Benghazi, killing 10 soldiers, as the Islamists tried to advance on an airport in the eastern city, the army said. The fighting came as Libya's outgoing government said that armed militias were in control of the capital Tripoli, days after Islamists seized its international airport as the oil-rich North African nation further slipped into chaos. In Benghazi, birthplace of the 2011 NATO-backed uprising that toppled and killed dictator Moamer Kadhafi, a spokesman for the army's special forces said the jihadist group Ansar al-Sharia took part in the clashes.Ten soldiers were killed and more than 10 were wounded when they pushed back combatants from the Shura of Benghazi Revolutionaries, said the spokesman, General Miloud al-Zawi.Ansar al-Sharia, which Washington classifies as a terrorist organisation, is based in Benghazi and said to control 80 percent of Libya's second city.It is part of the Shura coalition of jihadist fighters who tried to advance on Benina, which is both a civilian airport and an air force base, Zawi said. The situation is now under control, said Zawi, adding that the army repelled the attack with help from the air force which bombarded a column of advancing jihadists. In May a rogue general, Khalifa Haftar, launched an offensive dubbed Operation Dignity against radical Islamists in Benghazi, vowing to press his campaign until they are crushed. On August 22, the Fajr Libya (Libya Dawn) mainly Islamist alliance seized Tripoli airport after weeks of fierce fighting with nationalist rivals. And on Monday, the government said Tripoli was in the hands of armed militias.Ministry and state offices in Tripoli have been occupied by armed militias who are preventing government workers from entering and are threatening their superiors, a government statement said.

Israel plan to seize West Bank land 'alarms' UN's Ban

Posted:

UNITED NATIONS (AFP) - UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon is alarmed by Israeli plans to expropriate 400 hectares (988 acres) of Palestinian land in the Bethlehem area in the south of the occupied West Bank, his spokesman said Monday.Israel announced the move on Sunday, the army saying the step stemmed from political decisions taken after the June killing of three Israeli teenagers snatched from a roadside in the same area, known to Israelis as Gush Etzion settlement bloc. The Secretary-General is alarmed by yesterday's announcement by Israeli authorities to declare as so-called 'state land' nearly 1,000 acres of land in the Bethlehem area of the West Bank, the spokesman said. The seizure of such a large swathe of land risks paving the way for further settlement activity, which -- as the United Nations has reiterated on many occasions -- is illegal under international law and runs totally counter to the pursuit of a two-state solution. The secretary-general calls on Israel to heed the calls of the international community to refrain from settlement activity and abide by its commitments under international law and the Quartet Road Map.The United States urged Israel earlier Monday to reverse the plan, which has angered the Palestinians and alarmed Israeli peace campaigners.

Tennis: Djokovic, Murray book US Open quarter-final showdown

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - Former champions Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray booked a tantalizing US Open quarter-final duel on Monday with straight-sets fourth-round victories.World number one and top seed Djokovic didn't let Philipp Kohlschreiber stand in the way of another Grand Slam last-eight appearance, defeating the 22nd seed from Germany 6-1, 7-5, 6-4 on another oppressively muggy New York day.Eighth-seeded Scot Murray advanced with a hard-fought 7-5, 7-5, 6-4 victory over ninth-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, avenging a loss to the Frenchman in the Toronto Masters last month.Djokovic and Murray boast a long rivalry in which the Serbian owns a 12-8 record. They are 2-2 in Grand Slam finals, including Murray's triumph over Djokovic in the 2012 final at Flushing Meadows for his first major crown.Tough match, Murray said of the looming contest. We've had a lot of long ones. We played a long one here a few years ago -- I have great memories from that match.Djokovic reached his 22nd straight Grand Slam quarter-final, a run that stretches back to Kohlschreiber's victory over him in the third round of the 2009 French Open.I'm very glad obviously that I had so many consecutive quarter-finals of Grand Slams. It says that I do value these tournaments the most and try to always perform my best tennis in them, Djokovic said. The Wimbledon champion looked headed for a short day's work when he raced through the first set in 25 minutes. But Kohlschreiber dug in, keeping his nose in front on serve and forcing Djokovic to fend off a set point in the 10th game of the second.Djokovic did so with a stinging forehand passing shot to end a rally that sent the Louis Armstrong Stadium crowd wild, then broke Kohlschreiber for a 6-5 lead.Serving for the set Djokovic saved another break point with an off-speed service winner and having wrapped up the second set he broke Kohlschreiber to open the third and marched home from there. It doesn't feel that it went very easily, Djokovic said. Philipp is a tough player.Murray broke Tsonga in the final game of each set en route to his victory, first recovering an early break in both the second and third. It was extremely tough conditions, very humid and obviously windy, Murray said. It started to cool down at the end, but the first two sets were very long tough sets.Australian Open champion Stan Wawrinka, the third seed, takes on 16th-seeded Spaniard Tommy Robredo. Wawrinka beat Robredo in straight sets in the fourth round of the Australian Open en route to a breakthrough Grand Slam title in January. That triumph was followed by a crushing first-round defeat at the French Open, and a quarter-final run at Wimbledon. Two of the ATP's rising stars will duel under the floodlights as 23-year-old Canadian Milos Raonic and 24-year-old Kei Nishikori of Japan reprise their fourth-round clash at Wimbledon -- won by Raonic on his way to a first Grand Slam semi-final.The fifth-seeded Raonic is enjoying a career-best season, and at a career-best number six in the world is the second-youngest player, behind 23-year-old Grigor Dimitrov, in the top 10.Nishikori, the 10th seed, became the first Japanese man to break into the top 10 this season with two titles. While Raonic has the reputation of a big-server -- with the second-most aces this year on the ATP tour, Nishikori has been impressive on his serve in reaching the last 16. He's been broken only twice, saving 17 of 19 break points he faced in his first three matches.

Tennis: Serena, Pennetta set-up US Open quarter-final clash

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - Five-time champion Serena Williams reached her first Grand Slam quarter-final of the year at the US Open on Monday, setting up a clash with Flavia Pennetta in a duel between the two oldest women left in the draw.World number one Williams, the two-time defending champion, eased past world number 50 Kaia Kanepi, 6-3, 6-3, for a fourth win over the Estonian. It's my first quarter-final of the year at the majors -- at last I did it, said the 32-year-old American, who had fallen in the fourth round in Australia, the third round at Wimbledon and suffered a second round French Open exit.It was a tough match today. Kaia hits the ball very hard and moves the ball around really well. I wanted to stay relaxed and told myself that whatever happens, Serena, you're still in the doubles.Italian 11th seed Pennetta, also 32, reached her fifth quarter-final in New York with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Australian 29th seed Casey Dellacqua.Pennetta made the semi-finals in 2013, where she was defeated by Victoria Azarenka, but despite having a 5-0 losing record against Williams, she refuses to believe that the outcome of Wednesday's quarter-final is a foregone conclusion. Of course she's better than me, but I still believe I can beat her. If she doesn't have a good day I can do that, said Pennetta of an opponent who has dropped just 17 games in four rounds so far.If I get in the court and just play and try not to take 6-Love 6-Love, I'm going to take 6-Love 6-Love.Monday's other fourth round ties will see seventh-seeded Canadian Eugenie Bouchard take on Russian 17th seed Ekaterina Makarova and former world number one Azarenka, the runner-up to Williams in 2012 and 2013, play Serbian qualifier Aleksandra Krunic, ranked at 145.Bouchard, the 20-year-old Wimbledon runner-up, has made at least the semi-finals of all three majors so far this year and was a second round loser on her New York debut in 2013.Left-hander Makarova has yet to drop a set in three rounds so far and was a quarter-finalist last year.Makarova won the pair's only previous meeting at Washington in 2013.Krunic, 21, who is studying for an economics degree when she is not playing tennis, stunned third seed and Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova to reach her first major last-16.Victory over Azarenka would make her the first qualifier since Barbara Gerkin in 1981 to get to the US Open quarter-finals.Former world number one Azarenka is down at 17 in the world having endured an injury-hit season where she has struggled with a left foot injury, a problem which caused her to sit out the French Open. The quarter-finals in the bottom half of the draw take place on Tuesday and feature 17-year-old Belinda Bencic up against China's Peng Shuai while former world number one and 2009 runner-up Caroline Wozniacki faces Italy's Sara Errani.

My mission is to make Pakistan a welfare state: Imran

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) - Addressing the participants of Azadi March after returning to the sit-in site from his Bani Gala residence, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan said that there are two missions in his mind.My first mission is to make Pakistan a welfare state for which the system needs a complete overhauling. My second mission is to rid the nation of fear of the oppressors.PTI chief Imran Khan reiterated his resolve that he would not go home without taking Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s resignation.Refuting the allegations of Javed Hashmi, he said he does not need anybody’s shoulders to enter power corridors. He termed Javed Hashmi’s allegation as an attempt to malign Pakistan Army and Chief Justice of Pakistan. Imran further said that 2500 police officials refused illegal orders to open fire the peaceful and unarmed protesters. He said that three IGs were removed as they refused to obey illegal orders of the rulers.

Oil dips amid US holiday, China data

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Global oil prices slid on Monday in subdued deals before a public holiday in the United States and as dealers digested weak Chinese manufacturing data, analysts said.Losses were however capped by lingering unease over Russia-Ukraine tensions, analysts said.Brent North Sea crude for October dipped 15 cents to $103.04 per barrel in early afternoon London deals.US benchmark West Texas Intermediate for October delivery shed 31 cents to $95.65 a barrel.Floor trading in the United States is closed on Monday for the Labor Day holiday, and electronic transactions will be used to determine the settlement price. We are seeing thin trading volumes in Asian trading today ahead of the US Labor Day holiday, Desmond Chua, market analyst at CMC Markets in Singapore, told AFP. Oil prices are expected to trade within a lower range as dealers consolidate their positions with no new leads expected today, he said.Investors are also scrutinising data released on Monday showing Chinese manufacturing growth slowed in August, raising concerns about demand in the worlds top energy consumer, Chua said. The National Bureau of Statistics said the official purchasing managers index came in at 51.1, down from 51.7 in July, and the first decline since slipping to 50.2 in February. The index tracks manufacturing activity in Chinas factories and workshops and is a closely watched indicator of the health of the economy. A reading above 50 indicates growth, while anything below points to contraction. The Ukraine crisis is continuing to provide some support to oil prices, with little sign of an imminent solution. Russian President Vladimir Putin on Sunday raised the stakes in the standoff by calling for the first time for statehood to be discussed for the eastern regions of Ukraine now controlled by pro-Kremlin rebels. The West is threatening fresh sanctions against Russia, the worlds number-two oil producer, for directly aiding the insurgency. Putin has repeatedly denied Russia is fuelling the conflict or putting any troops on the ground in the former Soviet state, a key conduit for Moscows gas exports to Europe.

Srinivasan in limbo as IPL probe extended

Posted:

NEW DELHI (AFP) - India's Supreme Court Monday gave investigators another two months to probe allegations of corruption in cricket as they blocked a bid by ICC president N. Srinivasan to resume his role as head of the national board.Srinivasan, who was forced by the court in March to stand aside as chief of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) pending investigations, now heads the International Cricket Council -- the game's world governing body. The panel of investigators, led by former judge Mukul Mudgal, had submitted an initial report into the allegations surrounding the Indian Premier League (IPL) to the Supreme Court on Friday but had asked for more time to wrap up their inquiries. In Monday's hearing in New Delhi, a two-judge bench gave the panel until November 10 when the court will meet again. The court commissioned the investigation after rejecting a proposal by the BCCI to conduct its own probe into allegations about matches in last year's Twenty20 tournament. In February the Mudgal panel produced a damning preliminary report along with a sealed envelope containing the names of 13 individuals whom it felt should be investigated further. The court said Srinivasan was one of those named in the list. It asked the Mudgal panel to investigate him and the other 12 unidentified persons. The preliminary report concluded that Srinivasan's son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan -- who was the team principal of the Chennai Super Kings -- could be guilty of illegal betting on IPL games. The Super Kings are owned by India Cements, whose managing director is Srinivasan. The team is captained by India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni.Rejecting a plea by the BCCI lawyers to reinstate Srinivasan, the bench said Monday this could not be done until investigations against him had been completed. The Cricket Association of Bihar (CAB), which is not affiliated to the BCCI, said it was happy the Supreme Court had acted on its petition against the BCCI and Srinivasan. We are very happy with the observation of the Supreme Court, CAB president Subodh Kant Sahay told AFP. The court is the only institution that can pull cricket out of the current mess. The BCCI is trying to reinstate Srinivasan by hook or crook. Their efforts will not succeed.International news organisations, including Agence France-Presse (AFP), have suspended their on-field coverage of matches hosted by the BCCI since 2012 after the board imposed restrictions on picture agencies.

England face uphill struggle to win World Cup -- coach

Posted:

BIRMINGHAM (AFP) - England coach Peter Moores admitted Monday his side faced a race against time if they were to be serious contenders to win next year's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. No England side have ever lifted the World Cup, with the last of their three losing appearances in the final back in 1992 -- when the tournament was last staged 'Down Under'.England are on the cusp of a fifth successive one-day international series loss under captain Alastair Cook, given they are 2-0 down with two to play ahead of Tuesday's fourth ODI against world champions India at Edgbaston. They have a maximum of 14 ODIs in just over five months between now and the start of the World Cup on February 14, culminating in tri-series in Australia also featuring India. We've got to work fast, Moores told reporters at Edgbaston on Monday. We've got to accelerate the development of the team quicker than might be normal to get ourselves really competitive by the World Cup.We'll be unfancied, we've got work to do, admitted Moores, now in his second spell as England coach. But he insisted England were not suffering 'paralysis by analysis', and that opening batsman Cook, who has gone 37 ODI innings without a hundred, was the right man to lead the one-day side.Former England off-spinner Graeme Swann said last week the team do not have a cat in hell's chance of winning the World Cup and urged Cook to quit white-ball cricket.Meanwhile England great Geoffrey Boycott said Monday the team's one-day approach had not altered since he last played international cricket in 1982.However, Moores insisted: When people say 'you're going to go back and play like England in the 19 whatevers', that's not what we're doing. We're pretty clear on a strategy to go and be successful. But 50-over cricket isn't quite the same as people just walking out and whacking it. The best sides don't do that either.England's critics have argued a one-day top-order that currently features Cook, Ian Bell and Joe Root, all orthodox batsmen with a strike rate of under 80, puts too much pressure on the rest of the order. But Moores added: You've got to have a balance in your team of people who strike the ball and also people that rotate. You need to know you can create situations when some of your strikers, the Jos Buttlers of this world, have the freedom to play that sort of game.Asked if he was confident Cook, who faced calls from several former captains to resign during the preceding Test series against India before overseeing a 3-1 win, would lead England at the World Cup, Moores replied: Yes, I am.Swann, who retired midway through England's 5-0 Ashes thrashing in December, said England had become slaves to a misguided, statistical-based approach when it came to one-day cricket and cited their 10-wicket loss to Sri Lanka in the quarter-finals of the 2011 World Cup as proof. But Moores, who replaced Andy Flower, after the Ashes debacle, insisted he wants his players to think for themselves. The brain of a top-flight player is a fantastic bit of kit, he said. The best players in the world have the ability to adapt quickly on the field. To not use any analysis at all and rely on just what you saw -- nobody does that. You use information, how wisely you use that information dictates how well you've got your set-up. If it's being used to add clarity to stuff and help people develop their thinking, great. If it's there to replace their thinking then it's flawed.

US urges Israel to reverse plan to seize West Bank land

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - The United States urged Israel on Monday to reverse its latest plan to seize Palestinian land in the Bethlehem area of the occupied West Bank. This announcement, like every other settlement announcement Israel makes, planning step they approve, and construction tender they issue, is counterproductive to Israel's stated goal of a negotiated two-state solution with the Palestinians, a State Department official said.We urge the government of Israel to reverse this decision. The plan, announced Sunday, foresees the expropriation of of 988 acres (400 hectares) of Palestinian land by the Israel government.According to the Israeli military, the move was a political decision made after the June killing of three Israeli teenagers snatched in the same area, known to Israelis as the Gush Etzion settlement bloc.Israel has named three Palestinians from the southern West Bank city of Hebron as being behind the murders. The plan has angered the Palestinians and alarmed Israeli peace campaigners. The move has also been slammed by Egypt, which last week mediated a permanent truce between Israel and the Hamas rulers of the Gaza Strip to end a 50-day war -- the deadliest in years.Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's policy of settlement expansion on land the Palestinians claim for a future state is deemed illegal by the European Union and an obstacle to peace by the United States.

European stocks flat, ruble slumps, euro weak

LONDON (AFP) - European stocks ended flat on Monday, held down by concerns over the Ukraine crisis and by weak manufacturing data, and the ruble and euro were weak. The euro was weak against the US currency before Thursdays European Central Bank (ECB) meeting when policymakers will consider their next move to counter the threat of deflation in the eurozone.US markets were closed for a holiday. In afternoon deals, leading European markets were down but slightly firmer than in initial trading.By the close of trading, Frankfurts main DAX index edging up 0.09 percent to 9,479.03 points.Londons benchmark FTSE 100 gained 0.08 percent, ending on 6,825.31 points, while in Paris the CAC 40 lost 0.03 percent to 4,379.73 points. The ruble slumped to a new record low of 37.3910 to the US dollar on Monday, after EU Commission head Jose Manual Barroso had warned on Saturday that the crisis was reaching the point of no return amid fighting in Ukraine.- Eurozone manufacturing sector falters -Investor sentiment was also hurt by news of a sharper-than-expected slowdown in eurozone manufacturing activity.Markits purchasing managers index (PMI) measure of output in the eurozones manufacturing sector fell to a figure of 50.7 in August, according to the final estimate. That was still above the 50-point signalling growth or downturn. It compared with the prior flash reading of 50.8, and a figure of 51.8 in July.Although readings of above 50 are generally seen as positive, this figure provides further ammunition for those criticising (ECB chief) Mario Draghi for failing to announce proper quantitative easing measures for the eurozone, said ETX Capital analyst Daniel Sugarman. However at the Jackson Hole economic symposium a week ago Mr Draghi hinted at a preparedness to take further steps should the eurozone economy continue to worsen. In addition, the Italian manufacturing sector joined the equivalent figure in France in registering a contraction, while German factories experienced their most sluggish month since September 2013.In Zurich, shares in pharmaceutical group Novartis rose 4.31 percent to 85.90 Swiss francs on trial data showing the potential effectiveness of a new treatment LCZ696 for heart conditions. In Paris, shares in telecom group Iliad, owner of low-cost operator Free, fell on unexpectedly weak six-month results but also on the groups repeated determination to press on with a bid for US operator T-Mobile US.Iliad has offered $15.0 (11.2 billion euros) in cash for 56.6 percent of the US group.Iliad said on Monday it may raise 2.0 billion euros in capital to help finance the bid, which could involve partners.- Close eye on geopolitics -Geopolitical risk will likely continue to overshadow the market in the days ahead, especially given the one-week deadline set by the EU for Russia to scale back operations in Ukraine or face more sanctions, Credit Agricole analysts said. The single currency was bumping along at around the lowest levels for 12 months, at $1.3139, the same as late on Friday. It fell against sterling which rose to 79.04 pence to the euro, having reached 78.91 pence early in the day, the highest sterling level for five and a half weeks.Sterling was also strong against the dollar, at $1.6621.The yen was weaker, at 137.01 to the euro from 136.72, and at 104.28 to the dollar from 104.06.At Spreadex traders, analyst Le Mumford said that the euro was at the lowest level for a year before the meeting of the ECB on Thursday. But the Swiss franc eased slightly against the euro to 1.2073 francs to the dollar having reached 0.9196 earlier, the lowest level since the middle of February. The yuan closed at 6.1433 to the dollar from 6.1436 on Friday. The price of gold closed at $1,287.25 an ounce, from $1,285.75 on Friday on the London Bullion Market.
