Spain vs. France

Posted:

PARIS (AFP) - After their abject failure at the World Cup, Spain have a new look as they begin preparations for the defence of the European Championship with a friendly against France on Thursday.Just over two months on from their group-stage elimination as World Cup holders in Brazil, coach Vicente del Bosque takes a squad that is a mixture of familiar faces and potential stars of the future for the match at the Stade de France, the venue for the Euro 2016 final.Xavi Hernandez and Xabi Alonso, veterans of the side that won Euro 2008, the 2010 World Cup and Euro 2012, have retired from international football, following in the footsteps of David Villa.Pepe Reina, Fernando Torres and Juan Mata were all omitted, while fitness problems of varying degrees have ruled out Gerard Pique, Andres Iniesta and Javi Martinez.Of the new faces, five are uncapped and four are aged 23 or under, including Valencia striker Paco Alcacer. Others, like 28-year-old Atletico Madrid midfielder Raul Garcia, have had to wait a little longer for their opportunity. They all join 22-year-old Atletico midfielder Koke, who went to the World Cup but is now expected to take on extra responsibility. It's a team for now with a view to two years down the line, explained del Bosque after unveiling his squad, with the aim of Thursday's match being to prepare for their opening Euro 2016 qualifying Group C fixture against Macedonia in Valencia on Monday. We have come up with a squad that is a consequence of our bad performance, (but) the World Cup has not left any effects nor do I think we need to change our way of acting in the future.Defender Sergio Ramos, another survivor from Euro 2008, called for La Roja to get back to basics. We are going to try to get back to what we were and forget about the success we have had because we can't always live off that, said the Real Madrid defender, a veteran of over 100 caps, as he arrived for the squad get-together this week.- France reputation enhanced -==============================In contrast to Spain, France came out of the World Cup with their reputation greatly enhanced, a narrow quarter-final defeat to eventual winners Germany coming after some impressive performances in the group stage.Coach Didier Deschamps is now embarking on a two-year run of friendlies before France hosts Euro 2016, where they will be expected to feature prominently with a squad that is a healthy mix of youth and experience.Indeed, Deschamps only made three changes to his World Cup squad for the game and Sunday's friendly against Serbia in Belgrade, with one the return of fit-again Marseille goalkeeper Steve Mandanda in place of the retired Mickael Landreau.Lyon striker Alexandre Lacazette and Barcelona defender Jeremy Mathieu have also been recalled with Arsenal duo Olivier Giroud and Laurent Koscielny injured. But Deschamps has admitted that his starting line-up against the reigning European champions may be the same as that which took to the field against Germany at the Maracana in Rio de Janeiro on July 4. We have two matches very close together but the team which starts on Thursday will be close to that which started against Germany, said Deschamps, who added that his priority is to make sure his team are as competitive as possible in two years. There will of course be no Franck Ribery, the Bayern Munich winger who missed the World Cup with a back injury and has now retired from international football to the surprise of many.France lost 2-0 to Spain at the Euro 2012 quarter-finals and finished second behind La Roja in qualifying for the World Cup, drawing 1-1 in Madrid and then losing 1-0 at home in Paris in March last year. However, full-back Bacary Sagna insists France are a different proposition now.We are more respected than a few years ago, he said. We have shown that we are ready to fight, to give everything for the shirt. We have more confidence in ourselves. Other countries fear France more and more.

Obama orders reinforcement of troops to protect Iraqi embassy

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - President Barack Obama on Tuesday ordered about 350 more US troops to Baghdad to protect American diplomatic facilities and staff in the Iraqi capital, the White House said. The announcement came hours after the so-called Islamic State (also known as ISIL) released another video showing a masked militant with a British accent cutting the throat of a US captive. The Sunni extremist group has declared an Islamic caliphate in regions under its control in Iraq and Syria, after it swept through much of the Sunni Arab heartland north of Baghdad and then stormed minority Christian and Yazidi areas. The US has been carrying out air strikes on IS positions in Iraq and already has hundreds of personnel shoring up diplomatic security in Iraq. The president authorized the Department of Defense to fulfill a Department of State request for approximately 350 additional US military personnel to protect our diplomatic facilities and personnel in Baghdad, Iraq, a White House statement said.We will (also) continue to support the government of Iraq's efforts to counter ISIL, which poses a threat not only to Iraq, but to the broader Middle East and US personnel and interests in the region. Obama, on his way to Estonia and a NATO summit in Wales, will be consulting this week with NATO allies regarding additional actions to take against ISIL and to develop a broad-based international coalition to implement a comprehensive strategy to protect our people and to support our partners in the fight against ISIL, it said. The latest troop movement builds upon previous embassy security deployments announced on June 15 and June 30 and will bring the total forces responsible for augmenting diplomatic security in Iraq up to approximately 820, said Pentagon Press Secretary Rear Admiral John Kirby.

Should naked photo hacking be considered a crime?

Posted:

LOS ANGELES (AFP) - Already hounded by paparazzi on their doorsteps, celebrities face a new battle to protect their privacy from hackers willing to splash their most intimate behind-closed-doors photos online. After the massive release of naked photos of stars including Oscar-winner Jennifer Lawrence, some experts said it should be treated as a sex crime, rather that just an Internet or privacy breach. We are going through times where hackers will try to seek our information. Celebrities are at risk but also CEOs and politicians, said Jules Polonetsky, head of the The Future of Privacy think-tank.It is difficult to know the hackers' motivation, whether it is to embarrass women or show off their technical skills, he said.It doesn't appear that money was the goal, he said, in contrast to the huge sums that can be made by paparazzi photographers by selling their pictures to tabloid publications. There is a natural curiosity about celebrities... The Internet unfortunately breeds some nefarious, immoral behavior, added one Hollywood agent, who requested anonymity because of the sensitivity of the subject. For Polonetsky, this is a sex crime more than a leak -- a view expressed by a number of celebrities themselves on Twitter following the weekend hack.Remember, when you look at these pictures you are violating these women again and again... The person who stole these pictures and leaked them is not a hacker: they're a sex offender, said Girls creator Lena Dunham. The leak of private celebrity images recalls a similar case from 2011, in which a hacker broke into the email accounts of stars including Scarlett Johansson, Mila Kunis and Christina Aguilera.Christopher Chaney, 36, was jailed for 10 years and ordered to pay $76,000 to victims, after pleading guilty in a deal with prosecutors. He could have been jailed for up to 121 years if he had been convicted on all charges.- Keeping data private -========================The celebrity agent -- contacted by AFP as tech giant Apple admitted Tuesday that some accounts had been hacked in targeted attack -- said managers, lawyers, personal assistants and publicists may have to do more. It's an area, data security, that we're still learning about... It's an area that industry has to speed up on, he said, adding: I think it will definitely spur action to secure their private content. It will affect the way people think about the cloud and will change their behavior, he added.Celebrity lawyer Gloria Allred told AFP that public figures needed to understand the risks posed by ever-advancing technology. If you wouldn't want to see it on tomorrow's front page don't sent it via unencrypted email or store it in public cloud services, or on your cell phone for that matter, Allred said. The vulnerability of passwords is at the heart of the latest photo hacking, said Polonetsky. It appears this was not an infrastructure flaw ... that it was done by programs that work to withdraw passwords, he said. When you're a celebrity, we know a lot of things about you ... where you were born, your elementary school, your pet's name, he said.Stars should definitely consider using password management systems, which generate complicated passwords and remember them. That or so-called two factor authentication, where verification codes are sent to a cellphone. To be even more secure, finger scanners in the future could be a good protection, he said, making it impossible to retrieve content without its owner being physically present.

Celebrity photos leaked by hacker, privacy concerns rise

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - If celebrities like actor Jennifer Lawrence and model Kate Upton knew ‎little about the Internet cloud they would not be alone, but the recent theft of their intimate ‎photos has served as a wake-up.‎Hackers have boasted of stealing nude pictures of dozens of celebrities -- including singer Avril ‎Lavigne, actress Hayden Panettiere and United States soccer star Hope Solo.‎And, while some of the pictures appear to have been faked, several A-listers denounced an ‎invasion of their privacy after pictures popped up on anonymous online bulletin boards.‎‎- What is the Internet cloud?‎‎============================‎The cloud refers to storage of data on large-scale shared servers rather than on users' own home ‎hardware.‎It allows people to access their documents and pictures remotely on multiple devices such as PCs, ‎smartphones and tablets from anywhere with an Internet connection.‎‎- What is in the cloud?‎‎======================‎People can choose to backup pictures, videos and other files in the cloud. In some cases ‎smartphones and other devices will do this by default, a fact not all users are aware of.‎‎Many folks are blissfully unaware about iPhone photos being automatically sent to an Apple ‎iCloud internet server after it is taken, says computer security consultant Graham Cluley.‎‎That's great in some ways -- it means it's easily accessible on our other Apple devices -- but ‎might be bad in others.‎‎- Is the cloud secure?‎‎======================‎Major services like Apple's iCloud and Google Drive use encryption to secure data. But Rob ‎VandenBrink at the SANS Internet Storm Center said a flaw in Apple's Find My iPhone app ‎lacked protection against brute force attacks from hackers.‎‎And of course once an account password is successfully guessed, all iCloud data for that ‎account is available to the attackers, VandenBrink said in a blog post.‎‎So no rocket science, no uber hacking skills. Just one exposed attack surface, basic coding skills ‎and some persistence.‎‎- Are passwords involved?‎‎=========================‎Because many people use easy-to-guess passwords like 123456 and reuse them across multiple ‎services, hackers often can gain access with little difficulty.‎Rik Ferguson at the security firm Trend Micro said attackers could have used the I forgot my ‎password link for Apple accounts.‎‎The peril in this for celebrities is that much of their personal information is already online and a ‎security question such as 'Name of my first pet' may be a lot less secret for a celebrity that it is for ‎you and I, Ferguson says.‎A better system is to activate two-factor authentication, which sends an additional code to a ‎predetermined email or phone.‎‎- Are there other vulnerabilities?‎‎==================================‎An old technique used by hackers known as phishing can get a user to hand over a password ‎voluntarily. This often begins with an email which says an account has been compromised and ‎requests that the user log in via a link.‎Symantec security response manager Satnam Narang said his firm has been warning about fake ‎emails or SMS messages claiming to come from Apple technical support.‎The comedian Sarah Silverman tweeted recently: I got a text from apple privacy security saying ‎my iTunes id has been compromised -- HOW DO I KNOW THEYRE NOT THE SCAM? ‎Help‎Narang said these kinds of hacks are likely to continue because many people fall for the scams.‎‎Because of the continued narrative surrounding iCloud as the point of compromise, we expect ‎to see more successful phishing attempts of Apple IDs, he said in a blog posting.‎‎Users should also be wary of emails or text messages claiming to be from Apple support, ‎security or protection groups. Don't click on any links in these emails and never send your Apple ‎ID credentials in a text message.

America cannot predict outcome of negotiations: Jen Psaki

WASHINGTON (Dunya News) -- In a media briefing at Washington, the United States ‎Department of State spokesperson Jen Psaki said that the United States of America is in contact ‎with the Pakistani government, however America was not involved in any sort of internal political ‎decision pertaining to the ongoing protest, and it was not a part of the negotiation process at all.‎Psaki further expressed her aspiration by saying that all the political parties should resolve the ‎current political process through dialogue in a peaceful manner so that this conflict can be ‎resolved as soon as possible. She added that all the political parties should come to a political ‎solution in cooperation with each other, and should work towards strengthening the foundations ‎of democracy and the constitution.

MNAs back PM, express solidarity, demand action against traitors

Posted:

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Members of National Assembly (MNAs) supported Prime ‎Minister (PM) Nawaz Sharif during parliamentary session by expressing solidarity, and voiced ‎their support for democracy, and were committed that they would not let any traitor derail ‎democracy, reportedly.‎Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) leader Khalid Maqbool while expressing solidarity with the ‎PM said that Nawaz Sharif was the champion of democracy, and they would not let a few ‎hundred derail the process of democracy.‎JUI-F leader Maulana Fazlur Rehman said that the PM would not resign and neither would he go ‎on leave from his premiership because the nation has apprehended the conspiracy against ‎Pakistan, and it has damaged the country from within and without. He added that he stood with ‎the PM, and these people are traitors who have been demanding the PM’s resignation, because ‎such a demand goes against democracy.

Pakistan has never witnessed supremacy of constitution: Qadri

Posted:

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – In his first joint address from Imran Khan’s container, Dr. Tahirul Qadri ‎addressed the protesters by saying that the protesters were fighting for the supremacy of the constitution, and these people ‎stood with those who adhered to the constitution, but today’s joint parliamentary session was indeed a violation of ‎the Articles 18 and 213 of the constitution.‎Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) chief Dr. Tahirul Qadri said that if those in parliament had done no ‎wrong then they also had not violated the constitution by their acts. He added that the parliament ‎has never successfully implemented the law and constitution of Pakistan in the country, which ‎explains why the government is blind to articles of the constitution that go against their interests of ‎self-preservation.‎Qadri said that the same politicians have ruled Pakistan for 41 years but now in alliance with ‎Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chair Imran Khan, they would uproot corruption from Pakistan by ‎upholding the values of the constitution. He added that a treason case is filed against those who ‎want the supremacy of the constitution, whereas the judicial commission has found Chief Minister ‎‎(CM) Shahbaz Sharif guilty in the Model Town incident, but he did not resign like he had ‎committed.‎Qadri further said that PAT and PTI workers were not responsible for attacking the state owned ‎broadcast channel PTV, and perhaps, the government had sent goons in disguise to attack the ‎building. He added that army became part of the negotiations upon the government’s request, and ‎the government’s claims were misleading the public.

Nawaz Sharif making hasty decisions in fear: Imran Khan

Posted:

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – While addressing the crowd at the Islamabad sit-in, Pakistan ‎Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan roared that Prime Minister (PM) Nawaz Sharif has lost ‎the game, which is why he is taking hasty decisions in fear.‎Khan while severely criticizing the PM said that the PM is guilty of lying in the parliament, and he is ‎guilty of sending ‘gullu butts’ in guise of the police force leading to violence and bloodshed, which ‎has already ‘martyred’ 14 people. He added that in line with this deceitful strategy, false cases have ‎been registered against him and Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) chief Dr. Tahriul Qadri, charging ‎them for terrorism misleadingly, and on top of that, a treason case is already being drafted.‎PTI chief appealed to the civil service and the police force once again by saying that the security forces should ‎follow the constitution and safeguard the interests of the public instead of safeguarding PM’s ‎personal interests. He added that the police should not open fire on protesters because the forces were not the ‎personal employees of Nawaz Sharif.‎Imran Khan reiterated that no one in the National Assembly raised the issue of people who had lost ‎their lives because of police violence, which is why he once again called for civil support of ‎Pakistan’s population at large for his ‘Naya Pakistan’. He added that this is the nation’s struggle ‎against the oppressor, and everybody should stand united for this cause.

Freedom or death is my resolve ever since I came here: Imran Khan

Posted:

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan on Tuesday said that this many leaders have spoken in favour of the so called democracy in parliament today, asking if anyone even mentioned the election rigging, Dunya News reported.Addressing the ‘Azadi March’ participants, he alleged that the people voted for change but the government changed people’s votes. He claimed this system is kleptocracy and not democracy, adding that he and Benazir Bhutto studied politics in Oxford University together and that he knows what real democracy is.He said the constitution demands free and fair elections. He said everyone is alleging rigging took place including Fazlur Rehman and Aitzaz Ahsan, alleging that only Mehmood Khan Achakzai is silent because eight of his family members hold key political posts.Addressing Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar in a skeptical manner, he said “Field Marshal Nisar says on the floor of assembly that 60k-70k votes in every constituency are unidentifiable”He said he urged the government to inquire in four constituencies suspected of election rigging so that next elections could be fair, added that PTI even accepted this election.“I want to ask this to the whole parliament, Article 218 of the constitution insists transparent elections, interior minister says 60-70k votes are unverifiable, if that many votes are unverifiable, how do we know who won and who lost?” he asked.“I challenge you, if in western democracy or even in India; tell me who will accept election if this many votes are unverifiable…I want to ask this assembly how did they accept this election… this parliament is illegal and has no legality”He complained that no one talked about transparent elections and integrity in parliament today but everyone spoke in favour of ‘sham democracy’ so zealously.“How can you insist this assembly needs to be saved?” he asked.“My second question is why this many votes are unverifiable? Wasn’t it the government’s responsibility to see to it? Who’s responsible if papers were fake? You didn’t even do a single inquiry over such massive fraud? There is a reason that the government is silent… the government itself was involved in this fraud.”He claimed that the government was afraid of ‘PTI’s tsunami’ fearing PTI’s victory after he fell off the stage during election campaign last year.“Dear PM, tell me this… how will investigation be transparent with you in power?” He asked.“Which parliament will accept a mandate where 60,000 to 70,000 votes are unverifiable…we are not the only ones in parliament that is saying rigging took place.”Turning his point of criticism to Aitzaz Ahsan, he said Aitzaz Ahsan spoke against electoral rigging but didn’t ask what should be done about it.“O Aitzaz Ahsan, do you believe there could be transparent investigation until PM is in power? If not, why aren’t you saying this to PM? I tell you why…this because of co-conspiracy, they are together”, he said.“Aitzaz Ahsan spoke against our protest… I have known him all my life; I want to ask him why this protest march is wrong now? We’re doing this for democracy, why aren’t you with us? Aitzaz Ahsan sahib there is no other way to have transparent elections unless there’s a thorough investigation and accountability.”PTI chief claimed that the constitution was violated through the election rigging, adding that everyone in the parliament is now unconstitutional. If PM was punished when it was proven in court that he took ISI’s money, it wouldn’t have happened again, he said.He said Chaudhry Nisar termed PTI protesters as mob and terrorists.“I want to ask you Nisar, tell me what you did with us two days ago, what was our fault? 45 people were shot… what was my fault? If Pakistan is democracy, tell me what my fault was?” he asked.“And then they have made a terrorism case against me… if you know ABC of democracy, it is people’s right to protest if they feel their rights are being violated and they can’t get justice through proper channel.”Comparing government’s treatment with protesters to that of Israel’s with Palestine, he said even Israel doesn’t attack its own people.“What they did to us is exactly what Israel does to Palestine. Even Israel doesn’t do this to its own people”, he said.“I am afraid these who are produce of dictatorship don’t even know what democracy is”Imran Khan said he has seen General Zia’s tenure and Musharraf’s regime; adding that people weren’t as oppressed as they are now.Redirecting his criticism to JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s statements he said that Fazlur Rehman has so much pain for democracy and that he has also lectured on what is democracy. He said it is an insult to him to even respond to Fazlur Rehman’s allegations.“I think it is my insult to even respond to Fazlur Rehman… the person who politicks in the name of religion but sells for 2-3 ministries and diesel permit”Khan said that Fazlur Rehman pretends to be religious but negotiates with secular parties.Expressing his disappointment over PTI president Javed Hashmi’s statements, PTI chief said “I want to say that I respected Javed Hashmi the most ever since this party was formed. I respected him because he spent this much time in prison, I thought he must have principles… but I felt so much pain when he alleged me of working with army”He said Javed Hashmi sat with him 13 months ago in PTI’s Central Executive Committee (CEC) meeting in which Khan assured the committee to find every constitutional solution against the election rigging.“I said in front of everyone I’ll find every constitutional way to expose rigging”, he said.He said he told the CEC that Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz has a history of influencing judicial process, and that he doesn’t expect justice from this party.“I said back then that be prepared if these parties don’t give us investigation results by next summer, we’ll have only one way which is to take to streets to attain justice”, he said.He said he felt pain because Javed Hashmi knows he doesn’t work on anyone’s signals. He claimed that Anwarul Haq, the son of former military ruler Zia-ul-Haq offered Khan a ministership in Zia’s regime.“Anwarul Haq told me Zia said they don’t have any choice because Nawaz Sharif is incapable”, he claimed. Imran Khan said no other party ‘evolved from scratch’ like PTI did. “I had no support of dictator”, he said.“I only supported Musharraf in referendum because he assured me he will eliminate corruption... I could have gone with him when he offered me premiership under his government if I was power hungry.”He claimed that Khursheed Kasuri came to him in 1997 when PTI was 5 months old and told him to align with Nawaz Sharif PTI will get 25 seats.“I turned down the offer saying I came to politics because of corrupt people like Nawaz Sharif”, he said.He said he could have accepted those offers if he was power hungry. He reiterated “I felt so much pain for this Hashmi sahib when you said I was working on someone’s agenda.”Imran Khan tells PTI MNAs to have a blast in NA by exposing govts propagandaImran Khan, earlier told PTI’s members of the National Assembly (MNAs) including vice chairman Shah Mehmood Qureshi to go and have a blast on their last day in assembly tomorrow (Wednesday) by responding to the government’s charge sheet against PTI ‘point by point’, Dunya News reported.Addressing the sit-in protesters, Khan said he will address the public this evening and will put his case for people to decide who is attacking democracy and who is standing by it.“I and Benazir Bhutto have studied politics in Oxford together. I will tell you what the real and fake democracy is and why this struggle of ours is a decisive war and we have to win it”, he said.“Just figure out how much wealth they had before coming into power and how much they have now… Nawaz Sharif’s wealth has touched the sky, rising year after year.”
