Islamic State claims beheading of British hostage: SITE

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - The Islamic State jihadist group claimed Saturday it beheaded British aid worker David Haines, in what would be the third such execution in recent weeks, after two US journalists were shown murdered. The Islamist group released a video, available on the website of private terrorism monitoring group SITE, purportedly showing a masked militant beheading Haines. The two-minute-27-second video titled A Message to the Allies of America blames British Prime Minister David Cameron for joining forces with the United States, which has said it is at war with the jihadists and launched air strikes against them in Iraq. You entered voluntarily into a coalition with the United States against the Islamic State, just as your predecessor Tony Blair did, following a trend amongst our British prime ministers who cant find the courage to say no to the Americans, the executioner says in the video. The militant, who may be the same man as in the previous videos, told Britain the alliance will accelerate your destruction and will drag the British people into another bloody and unwinnable war.He also threatens to execute another British hostage.Scottish-born Haines, 44, was taken hostage in Syria in March 2013 and was threatened in a video released this month depicting the beheading by an IS militant of the US journalist Steven Sotloff.Haines had been working for the Agency for Technical Cooperation and Development (ACTED), an international relief charity, and was previously involved in humanitarian work in the Balkans, parts of Africa and elsewhere in the Middle East.Sotloff and fellow US journalist James Foley had also been kidnapped in Syria. IS released a video claiming Foleys execution on August 19, and Sotloffs two weeks later on September 2.

DEHRADUN (AFP) - A bus smashed into a bridge and plunged into a river in India, killing at least 16 people after the driver lost control of the vehicle, police said.Another three people were in critical condition after the bus, carrying 35 people, veered off the bridge in the mountainous northern state of Uttarakhand. The bus collided with the bridge and overturned into a small river, police officer Mukhtaar Hasan told AFP. Some of the victims appeared to have drowned, police said. The accident occurred in Juyalgarh village, some 150 kilometres (90 miles) from state capital Dehradun.India has the highest number of road accidents globally, with 138,000 recorded in 2012, the latest year for which official government figures are available. Transport analysts attribute the huge number of accidents to poor roads, ill-trained drivers and reckless driving. The national government has recently put forward proposals for new legislation to make Indias road safer by stiffening lax traffic regulations.

Tennis: France in final, Italy fight back against Swiss

PARIS (AFP) - France reached the Davis Cup final for the first time since 2010 on Saturday when they took an unassailable 3-0 lead over two-time defending champions Czech Republic in their semi-final.In the November 21-23 final, France will tackle either Switzerland or Italy whose semi-final in Geneva saw the home side pegged back to 2-1 after the Italian team won Saturdays doubles. At Roland Garros, nine-time champions France clinched the winning point when Richard Gasquet and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga defeated Tomas Berdych and Radek Stepanek 6-7 (4/7), 6-4, 7-6 (7/5), 6-1.It was just the second loss in 17 doubles outings for the veteran Czech pair with their previous defeat coming in the 2009 final against Spain.Gasquet and Tsonga, who had only previously played together on one occasion -- in Januarys first round win over Australia -- had won Fridays opening singles with Gasquet beating Berdych 6-3, 6-2, 6-3 and Tsonga seeing off Lukas Rosol 6-2, 6-2, 6-3.However, their efforts on Saturday were aided by a hip injury to Stepanek while an out-of-sorts Berdych was clearly unsettled by the patriotic fervour inside Roland Garros, the home of the French Open.Despite dropping the first set, the French pair capitalised on Stepaneks woes who struggled for movement around the court especially in the fourth set. After two breaks of serve, Tsonga served out the match to secure a place in the final, four years after their last appearance which resulted in a defeat to Serbia. Its for sure one of the best moments in our career to play here in a semifinal and to win in the second day, said Tsonga. We always kept the fighting spirit and stayed in the match -- we all know the Davis Cup is tough. In Geneva, doubles duo Simone Bolelli and Fabio Fognini took advantage of the absence of Roger Federer to keep Italys semi-final hopes alive.Bolelli and Fognini both lost their singles ties on Friday to Federer and Stan Wawrinka respectively but came through 7-5, 3-6, 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 against Swiss pairing Wawrinka and Marco Chiudinelli to ensure that the tie will be decided on Sunday.Federer, who was rested on Saturday as in 2009 against the same rivals, will once again be called on to seal the decisive point on Sunday against Fognini. On Friday, Federer, a 17-time Grand Slam champion who has never appeared in a Davis Cup final, defeated Bolelli 7-6 (7/5), 6-4, 6-4 in the opening rubber and then Wawrinka crushed Fognini 6-2, 6-3, 6-2.This point was very important for us, even if Roger wasnt playing, said Fognini. I am much happier with my performance today, I served much better than yesterday, I returned much better. Its still going to be very difficult for us but its a little less difficult than before. The Swiss are bidding for a place in the Davis Cup final for just the second time after finishing second to the United States in 1992.In the play-offs, where the winners will be assured of a World Group place in 2015, US Open champion Marin Cilic teamed up with Marin Draganja to claim a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory over Robin Haase and Jean-Julien Rojer as 2005 champions Croatia took a 2-1 lead over the Netherlands in Amsterdam.Leander Paes and Rohan Bopanna kept India afloat against Serbia in Bangalore on Saturday. With the hosts 0-2 down from Fridays opening singles, it was left to 41-year-old Paes and Bopanna to clinch a thrilling five-set win over Nenad Zimonjic and Ilija Bozoljac 1-6, 6-7 (4/7), 6-3, 6-3, 8-6.In Perth, Lleyton Hewitt steered Australia back to the World Group with a dominating performance in the doubles win over Uzbekistan. The 33-year-old warhorse, continually fending off retirement questions, partnered Chris Guccione to a 6-3, 7-6 (7/5), 6-2 victory over the Uzbek pair, Denis Istomin and Farrukh Dustov, to clinch the tie.The 28-time Davis Cup champions were in an impregnable position after Hewitt and youngster Nick Kyrgios won Fridays opening singles in straight sets.

Tennis: Venus to face Lucic-Baroni in Quebec WTA final

QUEBEC CITY (AFP) - Former world number one Venus Williams and Croatias Mirjana Lucic-Baroni advanced to the final of the WTA Quebec City tournament with semi-final triumphs Saturday.Seven-time Grand Slam champion Williams, ranked 19th and coming off a third-round exit at the US Open, defeated American fourth seed Shelby Rogers 6-3, 6-3 while Lucic-Baroni advanced to her first WTA final since 1998 by defeating German fifth seed Julia Goerges 6-4, 5-7, 6-2.Williams seeks her 46th career WTA title and second of the year after taking the trophy at Dubai.Lucic-Baroni, a 32-year-old former teen star, won her only two WTA titles on home soil at the 1997 and 1998 Croatian Opens, beating American Corina Morariu in each final.Williams, 34, saved nine break-point chances created by 21-year-old Rogers in the first set of their semi-final, seven of them on the way to a 4-1 lead. With Williams serving for the match, Rogers finally claimed her only break to pull within 5-3, only to have Williams break back in the ninth game to claim the victory after 81 minutes. After three years spent mostly away from the tour, Lucic-Baroni returned in 2007 and has shown her best form in more than a decade in recent weeks. She reached the fourth round at the US Open, a Grand Slam run she only bettered with a trip to the 1999 Wimbledon semi-finals.Firing nine aces and seven double faults, Lucic-Baroni was broken in the final game of the second set by Goerges but won five of the next six games to seize command on her way to victory after two hours and 23 minutes.

Football: Neymar double continues Barca's perfect start

Posted:

MADRID (AFP) - Barcelona made it three wins from three under new boss Luis Enrique as Neymar came off the bench to score twice in a 2-0 win over Athletic Bilbao on Saturday. The Brazilian had been left out of the starting line-up after his exertions in captaining his country for the first time in wins over Colombia and Ecuador in the past week, but made the difference in a tight contest when he slotted home from Lionel Messis pass 11 minutes from time. And the two combined once more five minutes later as this time Messi breezed past three Athletic defenders before cutting the ball back for Neymar to side-foot home.Barca remain at the top of the table, five points clear of La Liga champions Atletico Madrid and six ahead of Real Madrid with both sides from the capital to face off at the Santiago Bernabeu later on Saturday.Messi is the best in the world. He is a star and I am improving with him, Neymar told Canal Plus.I am very happy with the game today. It went perfectly with the two goals. We knew we would suffer a little bit, but we managed to remain tight at the back and then went onto win the game.Enrique was also quick to laud the impact made by Messi in creating both goals, as he also did for Sandros winner at Villarreal two weeks ago. It is evident that he is best in the world in any attacking aspect, he said. This version of Messi helps us a lot because he is a game changer. He does things in training that you cant imagine, things I havent even seen on the Playstation.Fresh from making his debut with Spain in a 5-1 thrashing of Macedonia on Monday, 19-year-old Munir El Haddadi once again started ahead of Neymar and was a constant threat despite not having his best day in front of goal.Munirs first opening of the day came 20 minutes in when he collected Messis pass and turned Oscar de Marcos with ease, but then fired wastefully over with just Gorka Iraizoz to beat.Athletic were coping comfortably with Barca in the final third, though, and threatened themselves when the excellent Ander Iturraspe broke into the box but his shot lacked the power to trouble Claudio Bravo.Barca upped the pressure on the Athletic goal just before half-time as Iraizoz did well to parry Ivan Rakitics fierce low drive before spreading himself to block from Munir at point-blank range as the youngster latched onto another Messi assist.Munir thought he had broken the deadlock at the start of the second period as he swept home from close range, but was this time denied by the offside flag as he failed to time his run.Iraizoz was on top form once more to turn Jordi Albas low drive behind and hold a powerful header from Munir, but Neymars entrance just after the hour mark gave Barca the extra touch of class they needed to punish the Basques.Aymeric Laportes wayward pass was picked off by Sergio Busquets and he fed Messi before the Argentine freed Neymar in behind the Athletic defence to roll home his first goal of the season.Messi played the role of provider once more six minutes from the end as he floated down the right wing and pulled the ball back for the unmarked Neymar to slot home. Both sides attentions will now turn to Champions League action on Wednesday as Barca host Cypriots APOEL Nicosia and Athletic welcome Shakhtar Donetsk to the new San Mames in their first group stage game in the Champions League for 16 years.

Football: Villa down Liverpool, Costa sends Chelsea clear

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Liverpool crashed to a surprise 1-0 loss at home to Aston Villa on Saturday, after Chelsea beat Swansea City 4-2 to move clear at the Premier League summit.Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor scored the only goal at Anfield in the ninth minute, hooking home from close range after Philippe Sendeross header was blocked by Javier Manquillo. After debutant Adam Lallana and Mario Balotelli shot wide, Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers sent Raheem Sterling on, but the closest the hosts came to equalising was a shot from Philippe Coutinho that hit the post. While Villa -- who have not lost at Anfield since December 2010 -- remain unbeaten this season, Liverpool have now lost twice, following last months 3-1 loss at Manchester City, and trail Chelsea by six points.I think the players gave everything today, said Rodgers, whose side were missing injured striker Daniel Sturridge. We just couldnt find that quality in the final third of the field and Aston Villa defended well.Asked to explain Villas victory, manager Paul Lambert told Sky Sports: Just pure hard work.He added: It is one of the toughest places to come in Europe, let alone Britain, but I think we deserved the win.Villa climbed to second, two points behind Chelsea, who came from behind to beat Swansea at Stamford Bridge thanks to a hat-trick by Diego Costa.John Terrys own goal from Neil Taylors left-wing cross gave previously unbeaten Swansea an 11th-minute lead, but Costa equalised on the stroke of half-time with a header from a right-wing corner. He struck twice in 11 minutes to put Chelsea in control, polishing off a Cesc Fabregas cut-back and a mishit Ramires shot, and Loic Remy made it 4-1 with a debut goal before Jonjo Shelvey replied for Swansea.Brazil-born Spain international Costa now has seven goals to his name and is the first player to score in his first four Premier League games since Coventry Citys Micky Quinn in 1992.Diego Costa is one of the best strikers we have at this moment in football, said Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho. The team is an attacking team that creates a lot and creates spaces for a striker. It could have been five or six.Earlier, Martin Demichelis scored an 83rd-minute equaliser as champions Manchester City held Arsenal to a 2-2 draw in an entertaining encounter at the Emirates Stadium.Arsenal looked set for victory when Alexis Sanchez slammed home a sumptuous volley in the 74th minute, after Jack Wilsheres neatly constructed goal had cancelled out Sergio Agueros first-half opener for City. But Argentina centre-back Demichelis headed in an Aleksandar Kolarov corner to prevent Manuel Pellegrinis side from slumping to a second consecutive defeat after their shock 1-0 loss at home to Stoke City.I think it was a great game: two very good teams, who try to play. Both teams are very creative, City manager Pellegrini told BT Sport. But both goals by Arsenal were very clear fouls: the first one, two or three continuous fouls, and the second one, (Danny) Welbeck on Vincent (Kompany).Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger drew encouragement from the way his side came from behind to lead, but he was also given serious cause for concern by an ankle injury to right-back Mathieu Debuchy. It was a game of top quality and we did remarkably well to come back, but then we gave a cheap goal away, said Wenger, who handed a debut to former Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck.Debuchy has a bad ankle sprain. I dont know how long he will be out for, but it doesnt look too good.Elsewhere, Everton claimed their first win of the season after Romelu Lukaku and Kevin Mirallas scored in a 2-0 success at West Bromwich Albion. An 82nd-minute own goal by Harry Kane saw Tottenham Hotspur held to a 2-2 draw at Sunderland, who twice came from behind to claim a point.Italian striker Graziano Pelle scored twice as Southampton sent Newcastle United to the foot of the table with a 4-0 win at St Marys.Leicester City secured their first victory since gaining promotion, winning 1-0 at Stoke thanks to a second-half effort from new signing Leonardo Ulloa. But fellow promoted side Burnley failed to follow suit, with Scott Arfield seeing a late penalty saved by Julian Speroni in a 0-0 draw at Crystal Palace.Manchester United host Queens Park Rangers on Sunday, when Radamel Falcao, Luke Shaw, Marcos Rojo and Daley Blind are all in line to make their first appearances for Louis van Gaals side.

Motorcycling: Lorenzo takes San Marino pole

MISANO ADRIATICO (AFP) - Spains two-time world champion Jorge Lorenzo took the 30th pole position of his career but first of the season when he posted the fastest time in qualifying on his Yamaha on Saturday for the San Marino MotoGP at Misano. The 27-year-old -- who is bidding for a fourth successive win in the race -- will be accompanied on the front row of the grid by two Italians in Andrea Iannone on a Ducati and Lorenzos team-mate Valentino Rossi delighted his many fans on his home track.Lorenzo, who is yet to win a race this season as Honda have dominated with Marc Marquez winning all bar one of the races and team-mate Dani Pedrosa the other, said it was a huge moment to record their first pole of the campaign. Finally after a long, long time, we make a pole position so Im very proud. From the beginning weve been competitive, not like in Silverstone where we had some issues, said Lorenzo. It seems like the Yamaha is working very well as Valentino is also very fast.Lorenzo said that he would need to make the most of his starting position to build a sizeable enough lead early on especially with the Hondas for once on the second row of the grid.Being on pole gives a small advantage at the start so I will try to make profit of it and push away in the first laps, said Lorenzo, who trails overall leader Marquez by 131 points. It wont be easy to go away as Vale (Rossi) has a good pace and the others will be there but Im going to try.Rossi was ecstatic to be competitive in qualifying for virtually the first time this season. Im so satisfied because its the first, first row of the season, said the 35-year-old nine-time world champion.I always struggle in qualifying. In the last races I was able to improve my level to stay always on the second row but the front row is so important for tomorrow, its much easier to start at the front.

Johnson, Brathwaite put Windies on top

GROS-ISLET (AFP) - A record opening partnership in Tests against Bangladesh and untidy cricket by the tourists contributed to the West Indies reaching 246 for three at stumps on the first day of the second and final Test at the Beausejour Stadium on Saturday.Debutant Leon Johnson (66), playing in place of the unavailable veteran opening batsman Chris Gayle, and Kraigg Brathwaite (63) put on 143 for the first wicket after Mushfiqur Rahim won the toss and chose to field first. Their stand eclipsed the previous record established by Gayle and fellow-Jamaican Wavell Hinds in Dhaka in 2002.Yet as well as the makeshift opening pair performed, Bangladeshs opening bowlers aided the opponents with an indisciplined effort through the morning session, ironically when the pitch was at its most helpful to the seamers.Despite a much-improved performance in the second session, when Johnson and Brathwaite were removed within the space of a couple of runs, the visitors efforts to make further inroads into the batting line-up were thwarted by their own errors in the field.Kirk Edwards was put down at backward-point off Shafiul Islam at the start of his innings and although he eventually departed in the final session, the missed opportunity presented by Shivnarine Chanderpaul could prove far more costly.Dropped at second slip off Al-Amin Hossain when only on four, the 40-year-old left-hander will resume on the second morning on 34 alongside Darren Bravo (44).They have so far put on 61 for the fourth wicket, but at a snails pace, occupying 144 deliveries despite conditions that seemed ideal for batting and notwithstanding their well-established reputations as the two most accomplished batsmen in the West Indies line-up.It was Shafiul who finally made the breakthrough after a frustrating first half of the day as Brathwaite essayed a shot that was completely out of character, chasing a very wide delivery and succeeding only in slicing a catch to Taijul in the same position of backward point.Taijul then struck almost immediately with Johnson being judged leg-before as he prodded half-forward. The 27-year-old left-hander deliberated too long before requesting a television review of the decision and was left to regret his tardiness with replays suggesting that the delivery would have spun past leg stump.Johnson had displayed a much more positive intent in the afternoon period following a nervy first morning of Test cricket. Brathwaite, fresh from a patient double-century in the first Test in St Vincent a week earlier, also stepped up the pace. After crawling to 61 in the first two hours of the day, the pair accelerated without taking too many risks immediately after lunch with the inexperience and general ineffectiveness of the Bangladeshi bowling exposed once again. Johnson hoisted the first six of the innings, a straight hit off Taijul Islam on the way to a maiden Test half-century while an edge though the slip region to the third-man boundary off Shafiul took Brathwaite to fifty.
