Oil rallies as Ukraine hopes lift sentiment

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - World oil prices rebounded Wednesday following the prior day's heavy losses in a rally spurred in part by hopes for a resolution to the Ukraine conflict.US benchmark West Texas Intermediate for October delivery gained $2.66 to close at $95.54 on the New York Mercantile Exchange, largely recovering from a more than $3 drop the prior day.European benchmark Brent oil for delivery in October jumped $2.43 to $102.77 a barrel in London, coming back from a fall Tuesday to its lowest level since May 2013.James Williams, an analyst at WTRG Economics, called the rebound normal after such a deep one-day fall, although the extent of Wednesday's bounce was a little bit surprising.People are anticipating better jobs numbers at the end of the week when the Department of Labor releases its US jobs report for August, Williams added.Analysts said Wednesday's developments in Ukraine were also a factor in the rally, with an end to the fighting seen as potentially lifting oil consumption.Russian President Vladimir Putin unveiled a peace plan for Ukraine that could be agreed by the weekend to end a months-long conflict that has resulted in some 2,600 deaths.Hopes rose for a cease-fire following a phone call between Putin and Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko. However, Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk warned that Putin's announcement was not sincere and US President Barack Obama said it is too early to tell if the agreement will hold up.Although there has been some small risk that the conflict would lead to a halt in Russian crude oil exports, news of a possible ceasefire in Ukraine would remove a threat to demand, said Tim Evans, energy analyst at Citi Futures.Traders are also preparing for Thursday's Department of Energy report on US oil inventories.Analysts expect oil inventories to have fallen by 1.1 million barrels, according to a survey of analysts by the Wall Street Journal.

Euro slightly up ahead of ECB meeting

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - The euro strengthened slightly Wednesday ahead of the European Central Banks policy meeting, with analysts mixed over whether it will add to stimulus efforts for the eurozone.Meanwhile, the pound stabilized after sinking Tuesday on polls that showed increasing support in Scotland for independence from Britain.ECB policymakers meet Thursday confronted by a deteriorating eurozone economy, with production slowing and inflation near a standstill. In the United States last month, ECB chief Mario Draghi hinted at a possible quantitative easing program -- buying up securities from the market to inject cash into the financial system and drive down interest rates to spur more activity. But no one was sure whether the central bank was ready to take that step now.Even as the evidence of economic deterioration stacks up, we think that the ECB will err on the side of caution and avoid announcing its first QE program, said Kathleen Brooks at Forex.com.The euro may also have earned some modest support from news of a possible truce deal between Kiev and Moscow in the fighting in eastern Ukraine.

Botham calls for end to IPL

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - England great Ian Botham said Wednesday the Indian Premier League was too powerful for cricket's long-term good as he called for the lucrative Twenty20 domestic tournament to be scrapped.Delivering the MCC Spirit of Cricket Cowdrey Lecture at Lord's, where he was once a ground-staff boy before going on to star at the 'home of cricket' for both Somerset and England, Botham also expressed his fears about the IPL's effect on corruption within the world game. I'm worried about the IPL -- in fact, I feel it shouldn't be there at all as it is changing the priorities of world cricket, the 58-year-old former England captain said.Players are slaves to it. Administrators bow to it. How on earth did the IPL own the best players in the world for two months a year and not pay a penny to the boards who brought these players into the game? I know this has been modified to a degree, but it is still an imbalance. The IPL is too powerful for the long-term good of the game. Corruption is enough of a problem in itself, but the IPL compounds that problem given it provides the perfect opportunity for betting and therefore fixing.Botham, one of cricket's greatest all-rounders, added: We have seen a few players exposed, but does throwing the odd second XI player into jail solve it? To kill the serpent, you must cut off its head. The ICC (International Cricket Council) Anti-Corruption Unit must pursue the root of the problem and if necessary expose the big names. Botham was speaking a day after England's nine-wicket thrashing by India at Edgbaston condemned them to a fifth straight one-day series loss under captain Alastair Cook.Although Botham, who labelled England's performance a joke in his Daily Mirror column, made no specific reference to the one-day side, he questioned whether England central contracts -- which weren't around in his heyday -- had made players too comfortable.Central contracts are brilliant, but it has now become so essential to the England player that the sharpness goes, Botham said.A long contract is a cosy contract. To play international sport, above all else -- above even freshness and rest -- you must have desire. Hunger is still the most important attribute for any sportsman. Botham, however, made no bones about directly urging David Cameron, Britain's Prime Minister, to do more for school cricket. Why aren't the Government focusing on sport as a necessity in the school curriculum?, said Botham. This subject drives me insane. I feel it is my duty to point out the problems that face sport in schools, and specifically cricket. The problem is now that schools are too big and there is no personal touch with the teachers. And as schools get bigger, one of the things you lose are your playing fields, he added. Come on David Cameron -- when I came to Downing Street to meet you, you made all the right noises and promised to come back to me with your ideas. I'm still waiting.

Zimbabwe eye South African scalp and place in final

Posted:

HARARE (AFP) - Zimbabwe must pull off a second shock victory in the space of five days on Thursday but must also beat South Africa by a big enough margin to qualify for a one-day triangular series final against Australia. The hosts stunned the cricket world on Sunday when they beat Australia, who were the No. 1-ranked ODI team at the time, for the first time in 31 years. The result gave Zimbabwe a glimmer of hope that they could reach Saturdays final, but their chances grew even slimmer when Australia beat South Africa by 62 runs on Tuesday to clinch their spot in the final. That left Zimbabwe needing not only a bonus point win over South Africa on Thursday, but also to significantly improve their inferior net run rate if they are to qualify at the Proteas expense. We have to play out of or skins again and do the processes right, captain Elton Chigumbura said.If we do that and play our best cricket then you never know what can happen, its a game of cricket. While Malcolm Waller had been due to leave the Zimbabwe squad for a six-a-side tournament in South Africa on Tuesday, his departure has been delayed after he played a useful role in Sundays victory.Waller added six overs of spin that prolonged Australias difficulties with the bat and then saw off Nathan Lyon during his innings, which set the platform for Chigumbura and Prosper Utseyas heroic partnership in the three-wicket win.Zimbabwes task will be made even harder by South Africas decision to play a full-strength side on Thursday.Given that the Proteas have a net run rate of 0.118 and Zimbabwes is -1,665, it had been thought that the tourists may rest some players.I dont see it like that. We feel that Zimbabwe is a threat now, Faf du Plessis said. They play well in these conditions and they prepare wickets that suit then.We expect a slow-turner in the next match. We need to beat them now. I dont think its time to rest players.South Africas main concerns following their defeat to Australia is over their end of innings bowling and their middle order.Although the Proteas reduced Australia to 188 for five after 42 overs on Tuesday, Mitchell Marsh hammered seven sixes to see Australia to a total of 282 for seven. Then, after the prolific trio of Hashim Amla, Quinton de Kock and AB de Villiers had fallen cheaply, the middle order was incapable of swinging the game back in their favour.I think the way the wickets play here is definitely a big reason for that, said Du Plessis. The ball gets a little slower so its harder to score when you come in as a new batter because they bring the field up and its quite tricky to get singles.

Pakistan opposition groups resume talks to end crisis.

Posted:

ISLAMABAD, Sept 03, 2014 (AFP) - Pakistani opposition groups on Wednesday resumed talks with the government in a bid to end the political crisis rocking the country, but a stalemate over demands for Prime Minister Nawaz Sharifs resignation dragged on.The fresh talks came after days of clashes between police and club-wielding anti-government protesters left three dead and hundreds injured, raising fears of an intervention by the powerful military that has ruled Pakistan for more than half its history. Government negotiators met briefly with members of the Pakistan Tehreek Insaf (PTI) party of cricketing legend Imran Khan -- who has been leading the protests along with populist cleric Tahir-ul-Qadri -- but they left without addressing the media.Separate negotiations between Qadri and a cross-party team of opposition lawmakers were ongoing late Wednesday. Both Khan and Qadri claim that the 2013 general election which swept Sharif to power was heavily rigged. Thousands of their followers have set up camp in Islamabads sensitive Red Zone government district since August 15.But their calls to overthrow the government have failed to galvanise mass support in the country of 180 million. Addressing supporters at a rally on Wednesday night as the talks got under way, Khan said he had no intention of calling the protests off any time soon, comparing them to Test cricket as opposed to the sports shorter Twenty20 form. Its not a T20 match -- its going to be a long match, he said.Qadri, meanwhile, told his supporters to leave the area in front of parliament where protesters have been camped out for two weeks -- leaving it strewn with rubbish and human waste -- and to occupy the roads instead. We wont leave the place till we change the system, Qadri said.- Middle way sought -=======================Some of the pressure on Sharif eased Tuesday after opposition parties in parliament backed him to continue, and after a senior PTI member said Khan had acted on the armys direction, damaging the movements credibility.Parliament called a second emergency session on Wednesday, with senior PTI leader Shah Mehmood Qureshi saying the party was willing to resume talks with the government in the presence of a cross-party team.We are ready to negotiate, ready to solve the matter, ready to break the silence. Imran Khan hasnt done all this for himself or Tehreek-e-Insaaf, he has done it for the better future of Pakistan, Qureshi said.Khans party wants Sharif to step down for at least 30 days so that an impartial probe can be conducted into last years election. Both local and foreign observers rated the vote as relatively fair and credible.A source close to the talks told AFP: All other matters have been resolved, but the main issue is still on the table, which is Nawaz Sharifs resignation. We are trying to sort out a middle way out of it, he added. The military has issued a series of public advisories to the government in recent days on how the crisis should be tackled, leading to criticism that it is interfering.Analysts and government figures have said the army may be using the crisis to its advantage to try to assert its dominance over the Sharif government.

Iran looks to better EU ties with Italian at helm

Posted:

ROME (AFP) - Iran is looking forward to improved relations with the European Union following the appointment of an Italian to be the blocs next foreign policy supremo, Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said here Wednesday.Zarifs comments came after talks with Federica Mogherini, the current Italian foreign minister who will shortly take over from Britains Catherine Ashton as the public face of EU relations with the rest of the world.Zarif said the crisis in Iraq and Syria demonstrated that the EU and Iran need to work together to address common challenges. The same challenges (Iran faces) are before the EU, both as international security and local and domestic security. The very sad fact a very large number of foreign fighters are now in Iraq and Syria brings this issue very close to home here in Europe. So I think we have common ground both in terms of opportunities for great cooperation, greater economic development, dialogue on human rights as well as cooperation to address these common challenges. This mixture... should provide us with a basis for better work together particularly with the role Italy has played as a bridge between Europe and the Islamic world. That role can be further enhanced by the role Mrs Mogherini will play as the High Representative of Europe.Mogherinis first major goal in her new job will be to wrap up a deal with Iran on the Islamic states contested nuclear programme, for which a November deadline has been said. The Italian minister said her discussions with Zarif had left her hopeful that could be achieved. We have said that an agreement ought to be reached by November in order to guarantee greater stability in the region, Mogherini said.It is my hope the negotiations will have a positive outcome and that this will be done by November 23, the agreed deadline.I was assured that there is a strong political will in Tehran for this to happen and we hope that there will also be the necessary technical steps taken.Mogherini said Italian officials had been in close discussions with their Iranian counterparts on how to bring stability to Iraq/Syria.We share a belief in the need to respond with a military presence in the emergency situation we are in but above all we believe in the need for an inclusive government in Baghdad, Mogherini said.
