US, Nigeria crime attack

WASHINGTON (AFP) - A US air marshal was attacked with a syringe at the airport in Lagos, Nigeria and had been hospitalized, the FBI said Monday. It was not known what was in the syringe when it was injected Sunday into the on-duty marshal, whose name has not been given and is in hospital in Houston. The incident raised fears the syringe could have carried some form of the Ebola virus because Nigeria is one of the West African countries where the deadly epidemic has spread. The FBI said authorities were taking every precaution, but that initial signs were that the victim was not a danger to others and was not showing any symptoms.Out of an abundance of caution, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention conducted an on-scene screening of the victim when United Flight 143 landed in Houston early Monday morning, the statement said. The victim did not exhibit any signs of illness during the flight and was transported to a hospital upon landing for further testing. None of the testing conducted has indicated a danger to other passengers.

WASHINGTON (AFP) - A patient infected with the Ebola virus in West Africa is being evacuated to the United States and will be put in isolation, the hospital that will treat the unnamed person said Monday.Emory University Hospital, in Atlanta, Georgia, gave no details about the identity of the patient. The patient is being transported by air ambulance from West Africa. The patient is expected to arrive tomorrow morning. We do not know exactly what time the patient will arrive, it said in a statement. Americans Dr. Kent Brantly and aid worker Nancy Writebol have recovered from their Ebola infections, having been treated at Emory. A third infected American is being treated in Nebraska. The death toll from the Ebola epidemic, which is spreading across West Africa, has surpassed 2,000, out of nearly 4,000 people who have been infected, according to the World Health Organization.

Cameroon, Nigeria unrest

YAOUNDE (AFP) - Cameroon said on Monday its soldiers had killed more than 100 Boko Haram fighters during an attempted incursion by the Nigeria-based Islamist insurgents, while across the border thousands continued to flee the groups advances. The Cameroonian army dealt a severe setback to Boko Haram during clashes in the north of the country on Saturday, government spokesman Issa Tchiroma Bakary said in a statement read out on state radio. The statement, which could not be immediately verified, said Boko Haram militants fired two shells on the town of Fotokol in Cameroons northern tip, on the border with Nigeria. There were no casualties reported on the Cameroonian side, the statement said. Our defence forces responded vigorously with mortar fire aimed at the positions held by units of the Boko Haram terrorist group. The Cameroonian response resulted in over 100 deaths among the aggressors. The Boko Haram militants were pushed back towards the Nigerian border town of Gamboru Ngala, separated only by a footbridge from Cameroon, which they seized over a week ago. - Exodus -==========Meanwhile, panicked residents continued to flee their homes in northeast Nigeria on Monday in fear of Islamist attacks. The exodus from Mubi, the commercial hub of Adamawa state, began on Sunday after the insurgents seized the town of Michika around 40 kilometres (25 miles) away the day before.Boko Haram has seized control of a number of towns in Yobe, Borno and Adamawa states in recent weeks, prompting fears the government could soon lose control of the entire region. With the fall of Michika into the hands of Boko Haram, Mubi is seen as their next destination, Mubi resident Habu Bala told AFP.The fear of attack grew on Monday after the families of police officers were ordered to evacuate, said resident Muhammad Maishanu. The Nigerian military has appeared largely powerless to stop the militants advance.Residents in Michika said airforce jets were circling above the town but were unable to strike because the insurgents had taken cover in civilian houses. In Mubi, where thousands have taken refuge in recent weeks, locals were thronging the main bus depot on Monday. The increasing large number of passengers far exceeds available vehicles, which has resulted in commotion as people jostle and struggle to secure seats on available buses and taxis. They just want to get out, said Samaila Ado, who works at the coach station.- Capturing everywhere -==========================The United States last week said it was alarmed by reports that Boko Haram had captured the Borno town of Bama and the possibility of an attack on the state capital, Maiduguri, 70 kilometres away. The spokesman of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Maiduguri, Gideon Obasogie, said he fled the town on Sunday.Thousands of others have also left Mubi for Yola for fear of attack. The Boko Haram militants are just capturing everywhere, he told AFP.The Catholic church in Maiduguri diocese is gradually crumbling. A priest in Michika had to scale a fence yesterday to avoid being killed. He had to pass through some bush and mountains before he finally made it to Yola.Security fears prompted the indefinite closure of the Adamawa State University in Mubi, according to a university statement. In October 2012, Boko Haram fighters were blamed for shooting dead at least 40 polytechnic students at their off-campus hostels in the town. The military has claimed it recaptured Bama in ground and air offensives, killing 50 insurgents in a battle near the town at the weekend.Independent confirmation was not immediately available and in an audio message, a purported Boko Haram spokesman named Abu Zinnira refuted the claim. The insurgents threatened to add to their territorial gains, he said.It was not possible to verify the authenticity of the recording but AFP received the message from the same channels as previous Boko Haram videos.

Tokyo stocks open higher after dollar bounces back

TOKYO (AFP) - Tokyo stocks opened 0.58 percent higher on Tuesday after the dollar bounced back to a near six-year high against the yen on investor confidence in the US economy. The Nikkei 225 index at the Tokyo Stock Exchange rose 90.71 points to 15,795.82 at the start.Japanese shares were likely to rise further, helped by the surge in the dollar, traders said. Japanese exporters benefit from a cheaper yen when they repatriate profits earned abroad -- mostly in dollars. Almost all of the stock market gains weve seen over the last six weeks have come on the back of a strong dollar/weak yen, and this is not going to change, said SMBC Nikko Securities general manager of equities Hiroichi Nishi.More fundamental buying would breed confidence in a more viable rally, but participation remains thin, he said. The dollar was at 106.07 yen in early Asian trade, compared with 106.03 yen in New York Monday afternoon, hovering around its highest level since October 2008.The euro bought $1.2892 and 136.73 yen against $1.2895 and 136.72 yen.The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.15 percent to 17,111.42 on Monday following poor economic data from China and Japan and the growing spectre of Scotland breaking away from the United Kingdom.

US,Indian diplomacy

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, for years barred from visiting the United States, will meet President Barack Obama in two days of eagerly awaited White House talks at the end of the month. The meetings, on September 29 and 30, will take place on Modis first visit to Washington since he led his Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to a crushing victory in Mays elections.Modi was told in 2005 by the administration of president George W. Bush that he would be refused a visa to visit the United States, after being accused of not intervening to stop riots by Hindu extremists against minority Muslims when he was chief minister of Gujarat state. He has denied doing anything wrong during the 2002 riots, which caught the eye of Washington following the passage of a law intended to outlaw violators of religious freedom. When it became clear last year that Modi was positioned to become Indias next prime minister, the current White House, which sees India as a key pivot in its policy of rebalancing diplomatic power towards Asia, signaled that Modi would have no problem setting foot on US soil. The two leaders will discuss a range of issues of mutual interest in order to expand and deepen the US-India strategic partnership, said a White House statement. They will discuss ways to accelerate economic growth, bolster security cooperation, and collaborate in activities that bring long-term benefits to both countries and the world.Obama and Modi will also discuss regional issues, including in Afghanistan, Syria and Iraq. The president looks forward to working with the prime minister to fulfill the promise of the US-India strategic partnership for the benefit of both our citizens and the world.- Going extra mile for Modi -=============================Washington has wasted no time in trying to court Modi, who was seen as less keen to engage the United States than his predecessor Manmohan Singh, a bookish academic who had a close relationship with Obama.US Secretary of State John Kerry and Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel have already traveled to India to meet the new prime minister. It is unusual for a foreign leader, especially one who is not making a state visit, to go to the White House on two separate days. The fact that there will be interactions over two days is a signal of the importance we place on the US-India relationship, said National Security Council spokeswoman Caitlin Hayden.Though Washington sees rising India as a democratic counterweight to the regions other emerging power, China, things have not gone completely smoothly.Kerry rebuked Modi during his visit over Indias refusal to ratify an important WTO trade deal on streamlining customs procedures and boosting global commerce.India argued that the pacts market opening requirements could prejudice its efforts to lift up its poorest citizens. The United States has tried to restore the warmth in relations with India, after a series of spats, including a crisis in December when US authorities arrested an Indian diplomat in New York for allegedly mistreating her housekeeper, infuriating New Delhi.Obama hosted Singh for his first state dinner as US president in 2009. He then traveled to India the following year.

25 years on, balloons to illuminate 15 km of Berlin Wall

Posted:

BERLIN (AFP) - Highlighting Berlins long and painful division, 8,000 illuminated balloons will light the course of the old East-West border to mark 25 years since the fall of the Wall, organisers said Monday. The inflated balloons, fixed to the ground with ropes to resemble lamps, will mark a 15-kilometre (9.3-mile) stretch of the Walls route for three nights leading up to November 9.That day in 1989, when East Germans peacefully breached the detested concrete barrier, heralded the end of 28 years of the Cold War symbol that spliced through Berlin.Berlin mayor Klaus Wowereit said at the projects presentation that the day the Wall fell had been special not only for Berlin, Germany and Europe but for the whole world. On that day, he said, people across the globe had their eyes fixed on Berlin to see how a peaceful revolution managed to tear down this wall.Organisers of the 25th anniversary events said that today less than half of Berliners know exactly where the Wall once stood. At 150-metre intervals, markers will recount tragic, happy or surprising incidents linked to the history of the divided city, with guided tours at historically significant spots. After being lit up for three nights and two days, the battery-operated balloons will be untied from their two-metre long ropes on November 9 and symbolically set free into the night sky.Frank Ebert, who was an activist against the communist East German regime, said the light installation would also bring to mind the candles that demonstrators had held in the run-up to the Walls fall.Nobel Peace Prize winners Mikhail Gorbachev, the last president of the Soviet Union, and Lech Walesa, who spearheaded Polands democracy movement and became its first post-communist president, are due to take part in a parallel ceremony on November 9.And Chancellor Angela Merkel is set to inaugurate on the same day a new permanent exhibition at the Berlin Wall Memorial.

Israel refuses to accept New Zealands new ambassador

Posted:

JERUSALEM (AFP) - Israel is refusing to accept the credentials of New Zealands new ambassador because he was also appointed as his countrys representative to the Palestinian Authority, an official said on Monday.Foreign ministry spokesman Emmanuel Nahshon said the decision to prevent Jonathan Curr from taking up the post came after Israel discovered he was also to present a letter of introduction to the PA.New Zealand does not recognise Palestine as a state and so instead of credentials its ambassador submits a letter of introduction.Curr had been due to present his credentials to Israeli President Reuven Rivlin later this week. The story has nothing to do with New Zealand, its a rule of protocol that has been in place for years, Nahshon told AFP.An ambassador accredited to Israel cannot be the same person to hand a letter of introduction to the Palestinian Authority, he said.If such a situation had existed in the past, we were not aware of it.Curr is New Zealands ambassador to Turkey and is based there, as Ankara does not have an embassy in Israel, Haaretz newspaper said.Nahshon said he was confident a solution to the problem could be found.

Breast cancer, brain stimulation win Lasker awards

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - A French scientist credited with pioneering deep-brain stimulation to help Parkinsons disease patients and an American who located a key breast cancer mutation were awarded top science prizes Monday. The annual Lasker awards are among the highest honors in the field of science, and are often called the American Nobels. The Lasker-DeBakey Clinical Medical Research Award went to Alim Louis Benabid of the Academy of Sciences in France and Mahlon DeLong of Emory University for developing deep-brain stimulation techniques that restore function in patients with Parkinsons disease. The work of DeLong and Benabid has enhanced the lives of more than 100,000 patients worldwide who have undergone the procedure, said the Lasker Foundation. It has spurred further investigations into the use of electrical stimulation that is already helping others with neurological and psychiatric diseases.American scientist Mary-Claire King was given the Lasker-Koshland Special Achievement Award in Medical Science for her lifetime of work which included discovering the location of the BRCA1 gene for breast cancer. She used the occasion to call for wider genetic testing of women, writing in the Journal of the American Medical Association that more genetic testing should be done to catch inherited cancers before it is too late.Based on our 20 years experience working with families with cancer-predisposing mutations in BRCA1 and BRCA2, it is time to offer genetic screening of these genes to every woman, at about age 30, in the course of routine medical care, she wrote. To identify a woman as a carrier only after she develops cancer is a failure of cancer prevention, said King, a professor of genome sciences at the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle.Actress Angelina Jolie raised attention to the issue of inherited gene flaws when she announced she had tested positive for the mutations and had undergone a preventive double mastectomy last year.Between one in 300 to one in 500 women in the United States is believed to carry what King described in her article as an actionable mutation in BRCA1 and BRCA2.That means between 250,000 and 415,000 adult women for whom breast and ovarian cancer is both highly likely and potentially preventable, she said.Breast cancer affects about 12 percent of women overall, but among women who inherit an abnormal version of BRCA1 or BRCA2, 45-65 percent will develop cancer by age 70.Currently, the US Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) supports BRCA1 and BRCA2 testing based on family history and ancestry, but not for the entire female population.King was honored with the award for bold, imaginative, and diverse contributions to medical science and human rights, the Lasker website said. She was also recognized for using DNA technology to help reunite missing children in Argentina with their mothers and grandmothers by developing a forensics approach relying on mitochondrial DNA, which passes from mother to child.King helped prove genetic relationships and thus facilitated the reunion of more than 100 of the children with their families, the Lasker Foundation said.Other winners included Kazutoshi Mori of Kyoto University and Peter Walter of the University of California, San Francisco. They received the Albert Lasker Basic Medical Research Award for discoveries about how cells have an internal quality control system for correcting harmful, misfolded proteins.

Cycling: Contador wins 16th stage to extend Tour of Spain lead

Posted:

LA FARRAPONA (AFP) - Alberto Contador moved a huge step closer to his third Tour of Spain victory as he saw off Britains Chris Froome to win a gruelling 160.5 km stage from San Martin del Rey Aurelio to La Farrapona on Monday.Contadors first stage victory of the race in a time of 4hr 53min 35sec took his overall lead to 1min 36sec over compatriot Alejandro Valverde with Froome a further three seconds adrift as he just failed to move into second in the general classification.Italian Alessandro de Marchi claimed third on the day, which was also marred by the disqualifications of Italys Gianluca Brambilla and Russian Ivan Rovny for fighting just after the midway point of the stage.Today was a very good day for us, said a delighted Contador, who only decided to compete in the race a week before it began after suffering a broken shinbone in the Tour de France in July.I had the power I needed, I managed to keep going with the pace imposed by Froome and when I saw my opportunity I took advantage of it.The landmark stage of the race, including four category one climbs, was expected to play a decisive role in who is crowned the winner in Santiago de Compostela on Sunday. However, the jousting between the general classification leaders had been overshadowed by the punch up between Brambilla and Rovny whilst they were part of a breakaway group of 13.Rovny even had to ask for a new pair of sunglasses from his Tinkoff-Saxo team car as they were broken in the fight and despite riding on for over an hour both men were eventually told to stop and expelled from the race.Froome eventually made a move with just four kilometres of the long climb to the finish line.Contador was able to follow the 2013 Tour de France winner and the two managed to distance themselves from the chasing Valverde and Joaquim Purito Rodriguez.Froome, though, couldnt live with Contadors acceleration in the final 500m as he strengthened his grip on the race with just five stages remaining. When Froome has a change of pace it is difficult to follow him but I managed to do it and I knew Valverde and Purito were behind so it could be an important day for me, added Contador. What gives me more reassurance is that I am recovering well, I have the power in my legs despite the blow I suffered and now we have a rest day ahead of us that we need to make the most of.After Tuesdays rest day, the race returns with a flat 190.7km ride from Ortigueira to A Coruna on Wednesday.
