Malaysian Airlines downsizes to save itself

Posted:

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - The plan to save MalaysiaAirlines (MAS) could succeed where past endeavourshave failed because the government has finally put politicsaside by agreeing to sweeping job cuts, people briefed on therestructuring told Reuters. The job cuts - if they are followed through - would mark adeparture from previous attempts to restructure the loss-makingairline, which has for years operated with bloated staff numbersamid political pressure from unions.Under the radical $1.9 billion overhaul unveiled last week,MAS said it would shed nearly a third of its 20,000 workforceafter the airline was broadsided by two jet disasters this year.Flight MH370 remains missing since it disappeared en routeto Beijing in March and MH17 was shot down over Ukraine in July.Unfortunately, it took two crashes to make the governmentrealise that sweeping changes were needed at MAS, said one ofthe people. With the job cuts, MAS finally has a plan that hasa chance of succeeding. Both the sources declined to be identified as they were notauthorised to speak to the media. It is not the first time that MAS has announced a big jobcull. In 2006, as then chief executive Idris Jala returned MASto profitability by cutting costs, the airline announced that6,500 jobs would go.But those cuts were never implemented in full, partly due toopposition from the main labor union, which has close ties to the ruling United Malays National Organisation (UMNO), the partyof Prime Minister Najib Razak.UMNO often uses state firms like MAS as a tool to reinforceaffirmative action policies favouring majority ethnic Malaysover other races, a strategy that has helped keep it in power.MAS has failed to turn a profit since 2010. One of thesources said that the union's ties to UMNO turned job cuts intoan unsurmountable political decision. The management were frustrated. They could not doanything, he added. After MH370 and MH17, and with Khazanahplanning to spend six billion ringgit of taxpayer money, themandate is there. The leader of the biggest MAS union declined to comment indetail on the latest plans for job cuts.State investment fund Khazanah Nasional Bhd, themajority shareholder in MAS, is spearheading the restructuring, which will also see the airline delisted from the local exchangeby the end of the year.Khazanah said it would invest in re-skilling those wholose jobs and pledged to set up a panel to improve often rockyrelations between unions and management.HIGHER FARES, SMALLER COMPANYWhile a leaner workforce is key to turning the airlinearound, Khazanah has said the success of the restructuring planalso hinges on several other factors, including reducing MAS'network and fleet, and improving fare pricing. The sources said MAS was likely to replace its ageing,fuel-guzzling fleet of Boeing 777 with newer AirbusA330s and the A350s to maintain medium-haul services, particularly within Asia. The airline could also sell its six Airbus A380s, which ituses on services to London, Paris and Sydney, to stem the lossesit makes on operating these jumbo jets.If they keep the six A380s, then I'm convinced they willnever make money. In my view, that's the single biggest obstaclefor them to make the yields positive, said Shukor Yusof, ananalyst at Malaysia-based aviation consultancy Endau Analytics.MAS is also expected to increase aircraft utilisation ratesand staff productivity, which would help boost revenue whilekeeping a lid on costs, under Khazanah's plan.Khazanah wants MAS' cost per average seat kilometre (CASK),an industry metric for cost efficiency, to be within 15 percentof low-cost carriers, on par with Gulf airlines like Emirates, and below regional competitors like Singapore Airlines Ltdand Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd.Another way to boost revenue would be to stop dumping faresin the market, the sources said. MAS has recently adopted astrategy of pricing fares way below their competitors toincrease passenger numbers at the expense of profitability. One of the sources, however, said MAS has to be carefulabout raising fares too fast.Yes, MAS needs help and a lot of work. It will lose anyremaining competitive advantage very quickly if the changehappens too quickly, he added.

BEIRUT (AFP) - Syrian rebels have made fresh advances near the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights in Quneitra province, where 26 troops and 17 rebels were killed in a battle on Saturday, a monitoring group said.Fighting has raged in the province since August, when rebels and the Al-Qaeda-affiliated Al-Nusra Front took control of a border post.Rebels have since taken control of hills overlooking the border post, as well as several villages nearby, (after battles that killed) a large number of troops on both sides, Syrian Observatory for Human Rights director Rami Abdel Rahman said Sunday. On Saturday, the regime tried to take back the village of Msahra, but failed, said Abdel Rahman, with the fighting leaving the 43 dead on both sides.Over the course of Saturdays fighting, the rebels also seized a string of new hilltops. The Observatory says the fighting around Quneitra has killed some 70 loyalists and dozens of rebels since the end of August. For many months, rebels have sought to take full control of southern Damascus, Daraa province on the Jordan border, and Quneitra.Elsewhere, regime warplanes carried out fresh strikes against areas under Islamic State (IS) control in the eastern province of Deir Ezzor and the northern province of Raqa. The air strike on Raqa killed two children, said the Observatory, while the raids on two areas in Deir Ezzor killed at least 12 civilians, among them seven members of a tribe that had fought the IS.The strikes come amid a stepped-up campaign by Assads regime targeting IS positions in northern and eastern Syria.Activists say such air raids often kill many civilians as well as jihadists. The Britain-based monitor and activists meanwhile reported several shells launched from rebel positions onto Abbasiyeen Square and other areas of central Damascus. The shelling comes three weeks into a major battle in the eastern Damascus district of Jobar, which the regime is trying to wrest from rebel control. On Sunday, the air force carried out 10 air strikes against rebel positions east of Damascus, the Observatory said, reporting no casualties.Syrias war has killed more than 191,000 people since March 2011.

FA issues corruption warning: report

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Several players suspected of links to match-fixing within English football have been warned to report any suspicious activity to the Football Association or face punishment, Britain's Mail on Sunday reported.FA head of football integrity, David Newton, told the Mail on Sunday that possibly a dozen players in lower league or non-league English football were on a 'watch list' of individuals who cannot be prevented from playing but who are considered 'persons of interest' in the governing body's efforts to root out fixing from the English game.In the event that we believe somebody is connected in some way (to fixing) we may remind them of their responsibilities, Newton said.We can seek various written confirmations from them that they have nothing they wish to share with us in terms of breaches of our rules or those of any other body or international association, and they will inform us the minute they do become aware of anything. In March 2013, the FA reminded clubs in the non-league Conference South of their responsibilities to uphold its rules after suspicious betting patterns were reported to it, but no formal police investigation took place on that occasion. However, Britain's National Crime Agency did become involved in a separate case which led to the convictions and imprisonment of Sanjay Ganeshan and Chann Sankaran in June over a conspiracy to fix matches in England in November 2013.The FA's director of governance and regulation, Darren Bailey, also told the Mail on Sunday: These matters are now treated with the utmost seriousness by all the relevant agencies. We're a lot happier in relation to the manner in which these matters are dealt with now.

Turkey in talks with France over missile purchase: Erdogan

Posted:

ANKARA (AFP) - Turkey has resumed talks with France on purchasing a new missile system after negotiations on a controversial deal with a US-blacklisted Chinese company hit a rock, the Turkish president was reported Sunday as saying. Some disagreements have emerged with China on the issues of joint production and technology transfer during negotiations over missile defence system, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan told reporters as he returned from the NATO summit in Wales, according to private television NTV.Talks are continuing despite that, but France which is second on the list has come up with a new offer. Right now we are holding ongoing talks with France, he said. Here joint production is important to us.Last September, Turkey reached a deal with China Precision Machinery Export-Import Corporation (CPMIEC) for its first long-range anti-missile system, but the contract has sparked concerns in Washington.Turkish officials had since said the deal with China was not finalised and that Ankara was open to new offers from other bidders.CPMIEC beat competition from a US partnership of Raytheon and Lockheed Martin, Russia's Rosoboronexport, and Italian-French consortium Eurosam for the deal, estimated at $4 billion (2.9 billion euros). The Chinese group, which makes the HQ-9 missile system, is under US sanctions for selling arms and missile technology to Iran and Syria. The Turkish move also irritated its allies in NATO, which has said missile systems within the transatlantic military alliance must be compatible with each other.
