Neymar defends Lionel Messi after Copa America loss

Posted:

BRASILIA (Agencies) - Brazilian soccer phenom Neymar has come to the defense of his Barcelona teammate and best friend Lionel Messi, who has been criticized heavily in the Argentine media for his performance in the Copa America.“Everyone we were with during the whole year, and our fans know that Leo is the best, he is number one,” Neymar told reporter Joaquim Piera of Sport on Thursday. At the Copa America, which matched up several top South American teams in a World Cup-style tournament, Messi didn’t come out on top. Argentina made it to the final on Saturday, but ultimately lost to Chile on penalties. And Messi, himself, scored just one goal in the tournament, which caused even his own grandfather to question his dedication to the national team. Some of him was there,” Antonio Cuccitini told Radio Casilda (via Goal.com) this week. “Triumphs are the greatest things there are. But the last three games he was bad. He was lazy.”Messi, however, might be more upset about his side’s loss than anyone.“There’s nothing more painful in soccer than losing a final,” he wrote on Facebook on Monday. “But I can’t spend anymore time without saying thank you to everyone who has always supported us and continued to during the tough moments.”Messi will soon get the full support of his friend Neymar in person when the two reunite to compete for the International Champions Cup. Barcelona will face off against the Los Angeles Galaxy at the Rose Bowl on July 21; against Manchester United at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif., on July 25; against Premier League champions Chelsea at FedEx Field near Washington on July 28; and against Fiorentina in Florence, Italy, on Aug. 2.

It will be amazing to put on another great show for them under the floodlights.Mo Farah, Jessica Ennis-Hill and David Rudisha are also expected to compete in the Sainsburys Anniversary Games beginning July 24.This has not been a good season for Bolt, who recently said he is suffering from a left leg injury. Cavendish wins 7th stage of Tour; Froome keeps overall lead

Posted:

FOUGERES (AP) -- British rider Mark Cavendish won a sprint finish Friday for the 26th Tour de France stage victory of his career, while countryman Chris Froome retained the overall lead as he bids to win the race for a second time. This time there was no crash near the finish, like the one on Thursdays sixth stage that cost Tony Martin a broken collarbone, forcing him to withdraw while wearing the race leaders yellow jersey.Cavendish is Martins teammate on the Etixx-Quick Step team, and can empathize with the German after separating his right shoulder in a crash on the first stage of last years Tour.Losing Tony was going to be a big loss for the team but we said today that we were going to win for him, Cavendish said. Hes an incredible part of the team on and off the bike.Cavendish timed his attack to perfection to catch German sprinter Andre Greipel near the line.Only Eddy Merckx with 34 stage wins and Bernard Hinault with 28 have won more Tour stages than Cavendish, who won four in 2008, six in 2009, five in 2010 and 2011, three in 2012 and two in 2013.Im really happy now, two years after my last podium, said Cavendish, whose last Tour stage win was in 2013. I just waited a little longer so I could use my speed at the end.Peter Sagan of Slovakia, who is bidding to win the best sprinters green jersey for the fourth straight year, was third.Sagan, who is not a main Tour contender, is second overall behind Froome. American rider Tejay Van Garderen, an outsider for the Tour win who has excellent climbing skills, is third, 13 seconds behind Froome.Tejays in great form and hes only a few seconds back from, Froome said. Hes ridden really well this first week.Among the main rivals, Froome leads two-time Tour champion Alberto Contador by 36 seconds; defending champion Vincenzo Nibali by 1:38 and Nairo Quintana, the 2013 runner-up, by 1:56.The stage featured no yellow jersey as Froome elected not to wear it as a mark of respect for Martin, who successfully underwent an operation early Friday. It wasnt ideal to get the yellow in this way. Froome said. I wish Tony a speedy recovery.Cavendish, meanwhile, was looking forward to speak to Martin on the telephone.Im so glad his operations gone well, would have been so glad for him to be here and celebrate with us tonight, Cavendish said. Were dedicating this win to him and I cant wait to speak to him later. The stage started from Livarot -- a town in the Normandy region -- and ended 190.5 kilometers (118 miles) later in Fougeres, nestled in the Brittany region.Contador fell off his bike before the start line but got back on to take the start.Actually we were just talking about the crashes when five of us fell, I couldnt avoid falling, said Contador, who was unharmed.Within two minutes of the stage start, five riders broke away.Eritrean rider Daniel Teklehaimanot, wearing the best climbers polka dot jersey, was joined by Frenchmen Anthony Delaplace and Brice Feillu, Croatian Kristjian Durasek and Spaniard Luis Angel Mate.Teklehaimanot took an extra point in his quest to win the King of the Mountains jersey when he was the first to the top of the Cote de Canapville. After Durasek and Delaplace were caught, Mate and Feillu were reeled in with about 11 kilometers (6.8 miles) to go.Once again, Van Garderens BMC team led the main pack as it approached the finish, with three of Froomes Team Sky teammates parked at the front.Suddenly, the peloton eased up and let the sprinters go.Everyone started to relax just a little bit more. Its a nice feeling actually; its been such a crazy week, Froome said. It was definitely much needed. It was amazing to look around to see how many people are wearing bandages and bleeding through their shorts.Norwegian sprinter Alexander Kristoff attacked first and then Greipel surged past him on the left. But this time Cavendish burst through some 50 meters from the line to deny Greipel a third stage win on this years race.He praised Greipel for not closing the gap on him, ensuring that it would be a pure sprint to the line.He wanted a fair sprint and thats a gentleman thing to do, Cavendish said.Saturdays eighth stage, which stays in Brittany, is a mostly flat 181.5-kilometer (112.5-mile) trek starting from Rennes and finishing with a short climb up Mur de Bretagne.

Motorcycling: Marquez fastest in both practices

SACHSENRING (AFP) - Four-time world champion Marc Marquez recorded the fastest times in both of Fridays practice sessions ahead of qualifying for the German MotoGP at Sachsenring. The Honda rider set a fastest lap time of 1min 21.621sec to finish on top, but failed to better the 1:20.937 lap he set to claim pole on his way to victory at the German GP last year. The reigning world champion, who is currently fourth in this seasons overall standings, is chasing his third consecutive victory on the Sachsenring circuit.Britains Bradley Smith of Yahama finished second on the combined sheets, 0.119 sec off Marquezs pace, with a strong performance in the days second session having been 13th fastest in the morning. His team-mate and current world championship leader Valentino Rossi, who is chasing his first win on the track since 2009, lost ground having been second in the morning session to finish seventh fastest.Spains Dani Pedrosa, the circuits record holder, was fifth fastest and put in a lap time 0.268 sec off the pace set by his Honda colleague Martinez.

Oil prices little-changed as IEA sees slower demand growth

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - Oil prices were barely changed Friday as the International Energy Agency forecast that global demand will grow more slowly next year.US benchmark West Texas Intermediate for delivery in August edged down four cents to $52.74 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.Brent North Sea crude for August, the international benchmark, rose to $58.73 a barrel in London, a gain of 12 cents from Thursdays close. The International Energy Agency, in its first estimates for 2016, forecast that global oil demand would grow by 1.2 million barrels per day next year, compared with 1.4 million barrels a day this year.Meanwhile it said global oil output grew by 550,000 barrels a day in June alone, to 96.6 million barrels a day, up on average by 3.1 million barrels from a year ago.Underpinning that supply-demand mismatch, the agency said, is the increase in oil production by the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries in June to a three-year high of 31.7 million barrels.Global supply and demand balances suggest that the rate of global stock increases quickened rapidly to an astonishing 3.3 million barrels a day during the second quarter, the IEA said.In the United States, the weekly report by oilfield services company Baker Hughes showed the US oil rig count rose for a second straight week, by five, after increasing by 12 the prior week. The report suggested the recent steep decline in US drilling was ending, heightening oversupply worries. The slide in the rig count has clearly bottomed as producers have reduced production costs, said Andy Lipow of Lipow Oil Associates.

Euro climbs on optimism for Greek deal

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - The euro surged against the dollar Friday amid hope that European leaders would accept Greeces proposals for a new bailout deal over the weekend. The proposal, in which Athens offered signficant reforms over the next three years in exchange for fresh money and restructured debts from the countrys official EU creditors, raised optimism that another default by Greece and its exit from the euro area could be avoided. The euro rose more than one cent to $1.1149 around 2100 GMT on Friday. It also surged nearly three yen to 136.86 yen.The current proposals set forth by Greece and the creditors should have enough common ground that an agreement can be reached before the negotiation deadline on Sunday, said Christopher Vecchio, an analyst at DailyFX.The greenback showed little effect from Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellens reiteration that the Feds first rate hike since 2006 will likely come before the end of the year.Yellen though remained cautious -- reflecting sentiment from the last Fed policy meeting -- noting continuing signs of slack in the jobs market and the risk of moving too soon on rates. We will be watching carefully to see if there is continued improvement in labor market conditions, and we will need to be reasonably confident that inflation will move back to two percent in the next few years, she said.

S. Korea reports 36th MERS death

SEOUL (AFP) - South Korea Friday reported its 36th death from MERS, although it has had no confirmed new cases of the virus in the past five days. The latest fatality, who had lung cancer, died while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Seoul, Yonhap news agency said, citing the health ministry.South Korea has confirmed 186 Middle East Respiratory Syndrome infections while more than 560 people remain in quarantine after possible exposure to the potentially deadly virus.A total of 125 of those diagnosed with the virus have recovered and been released from hospital. The outbreak started on May 20 when a 68-year-old man was diagnosed after returning from a trip to Saudi Arabia.Since then the virus -- for which there is no vaccine -- has spread at an unusually rapid pace in Asias fourth-largest economy, becoming the largest outbreak outside Saudi Arabia and sparking public alarm at home and elsewhere in the region. South Koreas government is facing criticism for failing to stop the outbreak.

DAMBULLA (Agencies) - After clinching the Test series 2-1, Pakistan shifts focus to the One-Day Internationals against Sri Lanka, the first of which takes place in Dambulla today (Saturday), and apart from just trying to win the series, Pakistan will have qualification for the 2017 Champions Trophy on the back of its mind.“This is obviously a very important series for us and we will make sure we play well and win,” said Azhar Ali, Pakistan’s ODI captain, on the eve of the match. “Most of the players know what to expect in Sri Lanka. We are ready.”Pakistan has not had a good run in ODI cricket of late. It was knocked out of the 2015 World Cup by Australia in the quarter-final and then suffered a 3-0 whitewash in Bangladesh before beating Zimbabwe 2-0 at home in what was its first home series since 2009.Pakistan have called up Mohammad Irfan, who has recovered from a hip injury sustained during the World Cup, but Wahab Riaz and Haris Sohail continued to sit out because of injuries. The squad also includes two new batsmen in Mukhtar Ahmed, 22, and Bilal Asif, 29.Sri Lanka, playing its first ODI series since the retirements of Mahela Jayawardena and Kumar Sangakkara after the World Cup, is also rebuilding. It has included two brand new allrounders, Milinda Siriwardana, 29, and Sachith Pathirana, 26, both of whom bowl left-arm spin – Sri Lanka’s 15-man squad includes just six of the players who took part in the Test series. The Dambulla game, a day game, is followed by day-night games in Pallekele (July 15), Colombo (July 19 and 22) and Hambantota (July 26).Teams (from):Pakistan: Azhar Ali (capt), Mukhtar Ahmed, Ahmed Shehzad, Mohammad Hafeez, Asad Shafiq, Shoaib Malik, Mohammad Rizwan, Babar Azam, Sarfraz Ahmed, Yasir Shah, Bilal Asif, Immad Wasim, Anwar Ali, Mohammad Irfan, Ehsan Adil, Rahat Ali.Sri Lanka: Angelo Mathews (capt), Tillakaratne Dilshan, Kusal Perera, Upul Tharanga, Lahiru Thirimanne, Dinesh Chandimal, Milinda Siriwardana, Ashan Priyanjan, Nuwan Pradeep, Thisara Perera, Suranga Lakmal, Lasith Malinga, Sachithra Senanayake, Seekkuge Prasanna, Sachith Pathirana.

Australia face record chase to win Ashes opener

Posted:

CARDIFF (AFP) - Ian Bell returned to form and Joe Root again proved a thorn in Australias side as England left their arch-rivals needing to set a new record of 412 to win the first Ashes Test at Sophia Gardens on Friday. The most either side have made to win in the fourth innings of an Ashes Test was Australias 404 for three at Headingley back in 1948 when Arthur Morris scored 182 and Donald Bradman, widely regarded as crickets greatest batsman, an unbeaten 173.If Australia -- who have two days to get the runs albeit on a pitch of increasingly variable bounce -- succeed it will be the third-highest fourth innings total to win any Test and highest in England.West Indies made 418 for seven against Australia in St Johns, Antigua in 2002/03 and South Africa scored 414 for four, also against Australia, in Perth in 2008/09.Bell and first-innings century-maker Root both made valuable scores of 60 off 89 balls apiece.England had talked about wanting to play aggressive cricket in the build-up to this match but many pundits questioned whether their batsmen could do that against Australias pace attack.Yet Fridays third day saw England maintain a brisk of run-rate of just above four an over.Bells fifty was just what the experienced batsman needed after his previous nine Test innings had yielded just 56 runs in total. Its been a while so its nice to get a few, Bell told Sky Sports.Ive had to work very hard but today it felt just how I wanted it to be, he added.Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon took four for 75 as England were dismissed for 289 in their second innings having piled up 430 in their first when Root, dropped on nought by wicket-keeper Brad Haddin, made 134.We learnt from bowling in the first innings, said Lyon. To take 10 wickets in just over two-and-a-half sessions is a pretty good effort.England were wobbling at 22 for two when Bell came in on Friday after skipper Alastair Cook and Gary Ballance had fallen either side of lunch. The 33-year-old Bell, appearing in his 111th Test, had struggled since making 143 against the West Indies in Antigua in April. But he reeled off four fours in his first 13 balls faced on Friday including a textbook cover-drive boundary off left-arm paceman Mitchell Starc, who appeared to be struggling with an ankle injury.Adam Lyth, looking to establish himself in the England set-up fell for 37 when, pushing forward to a Lyon delivery that bounced and turned to take his outside edge, he was brilliantly caught one-handed by diving Australia captain Michael Clarke at slip. His exit brought in Yorkshire team-mate Root, whose opening three scoring shots on Friday all went for four.Meanwhile Bell, who scored three hundreds during Englands 3-0 home Ashes series win two years ago, looked at his fluent best in compiling a 75-ball fifty featuring 40 runs in boundaries. He launched Mitchell Johnson over extra-cover but next ball was bowled by a delivery that seamed off the pitch.Bells exit meant Johnson finally had a wicket this Test in the left-arm fast bowlers 36th over of the match -- a far cry from when he was taking 37 wickets during Australias 5-0 home Ashes rout of England in 2013/4.Roots punched cover-drive for four off Johnson both saw the 24-year-old to a 66-ball fifty and gave England a lead in excess of 300. His innings ended when a Josh Hazlewood delivery kept low and hit Roots back pad before deflecting into the middle stump.Ben Stokes chipped in with 42 before Durham team-mate Mark Wood, belying his position at No 10, went down the pitch to drive Lyon for a huge straight six and next ball reverse-swept him for four to give England a lead of exactly 400.Ashes debutant Wood finished on a Test-best 32 not out off 18 balls. Earlier, England dismissed Australia for 308 and a first-innings lead of 122.Australia, bidding to win their first Ashes series in Britain in 14 years, resumed Friday on 264 for five but lost their last five wickets for 44 runs in the face of disciplined pace bowling led by Stuart Broad and James Anderson.

South Africa coast after Rabada's record

Posted:

DHAKA (AFP) - Kagiso Rabada became only the second man in history to claim a hat-trick on debut as South Africa thrashed Bangladesh by eight wickets in a rain-hit first one-day international in Dhaka on Friday. Rabada finished with 6-16, the best ever one-day haul by a debutante, as Bangladesh were folded 160 in 36.3 overs after the hosts opted to bat first on a rain-soaked pitch at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium. Set a simple target, South Africa coasted without major hiccups, reaching 164-2 with nearly nine overs in hand to take a 1-0 lead in three-match series.Faf du Plessis made an unbeaten 63 from 75 balls and put 99 runs with Rilee Rossouw in an unbroken third wicket stand after the early dismissals of stand-in captain Hashim Amla (14) and Quinton de Kock (35).Rossouw, who was 45 not out, completed the win when he cut part-time leg-spinner Sabbir Rahman for a four towards point. The match was reduced to a 40-over-a-side affair after monsoon downpour delayed the start of play for two hours and 40 minutes.Rabada, selected ahead of experienced Morne Morkel, struck in the third ball of his second over when he sent the off-stump of opener Tamim Iqbal cartwheeling. He then made one-down Litton Das offer a low catch to Farhaan Behardien at midwicket and trapped Mahmudullah leg-before in his next two deliveries to complete the hat-trick, joining Bangladeshs Taijul Islam, who achieved the feat against Zimbabwe at the same ground in December. The 20-year-old pacer later dismissed other opener Soumya Sarkar before Shakib Al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim provided a brief resistance for Bangladesh with 53-run fifth wicket stand. Its great to just do well for your team and put them in a good position and we won comfortably in the end, said man-of-the-match Rabada.I didnt know what to bowl when I was on hat-trick -- maybe bouncer, then yorker but I missed it by a mile, he said.It was a bit of a fluke, but Ill take it.Its important to keep the game simple, keep the batsmen guessing and hit good line and length, and guess what the batsmen are trying to do, he added.Shakib top-scored 48 runs for the home side facing 51 balls while Rahim added 24.Rabada returned in his second spell to add the wickets of Mashrafe Mortaza and Jubair Hossain, shattering the best ODI debut wicket-taking record held by West Indies Fidel Edwards. Edwards claimed 6-22 against Zimbabwe in 2003.Rabada is the first South African to bag six wickets on debut and only the second South African bowler to claim five wickets in his first one-day international match. The other South African to achieve the feat is Allan Donald who took 5-29 against India at Kolkata in 1991.Nasir Hossain lent some late resistance to score 31 off 44 balls before he was bowled by Chris Morris, who finished with 2-32. Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Mortaza said he was hoping to put up a fight with a score of at least 200 runs.If we could have scored at least 200, maybe 220, it would have been a different game. We kept losing wickets, Mortaza said after the match. If someone from the opposition gets a hat-trick you go on the back foot. Wicket was pretty good. We cant give any excuse, he said. The second and third ODI of the three-match series will be held on July 12 and 15 respectively in Dhaka and Chittagong.

India beat Zimbabwe in first ODI

Posted:

HARARE (Agencies) - Elton Chigumbura’s heroic 104 not out was in vain as Zimbabwe fell agonisingly short of victory in the first of three one-day internationals against India at Harare Sports Club on Friday.Zimbabwe appeared to be out of the game after slumping to 160 for six as they chased India’s 255 for six, but after carrying the hosts to within six runs of victory, Chigumbura failed to strike the final blow. The home side -- who have improved vastly over the past year in the one day game -- went into the final over needing 10 to win and reduced that to six from three balls, but Bhuvneshwar Kumar held his nerve and Zimbabwe closed on 251 for seven to lose by four runs.He bowled well in that last over so it was hard, Chigumbura said of Kumar.I was just waiting for the one that he was going to miss and make sure I executed well, but I didn’t get any.It was disappointing to lose after fighting so hard. The Indian victory was built on a career-best 124 not out from Ambati Rayudu, who put on a 160-run partnership for the sixth wicket with Stuart Binny after the visitors had slumped to 87 for five. With the game getting underway at 9am local time, the hosts found some lateral movement as well as healthy bounce after they had won the toss, and a disciplined performance kept a second-string Indian unit on the back foot. However once the pitch flattened out and the spinners came on, Rayudu counterpunched to good effect and then added 90 runs in the final 10 overs with Binny, who made 77.Zimbabwe’s chase was hampered by their inability to build meaningful partnerships, with Vusi Sibanda, Hamilton Masakadza and Sikandar Raza Butt all guilty of getting out tamely after making promising starts. When Raza fell for 37, Zimbabwe still needed 96 runs for victory and Chigumbura was the last recognised batsman. The Zimbabwe captain was undeterred by such a tall ask, and reached his second successive century - an admirable feat given that he had not reached three figures in 173 ODIs before his maiden ton in Pakistan in May.That innings had failed to bring victory in Lahore, and Chigumbura and Zimbabwe were denied once again this time as Kumar delivered an inch-perfect final over to send an enthusiastic crowd home disappointed. The second match takes place at the same venue on Sunday.

Quality cricket concludes 'phase one' of Pak-Lanka series

Posted:

LAHORE (Web Desk) – Quality cricket has earned Pakistan a series against Sri Lanka – the Islanders. Green Caps waited for nine years to achieve this milestone. Before the start of the series, Misbah’s men wanted to dominate the Islanders on their home soil.Sri Lanka beat Pakistan in 2012 as Misbah-XI failed to win even a single Test in the 2-match series. Rangana Herath always disturbs Pakistan with his left-arm spin and his stats against Green Caps speak for him as he removed more than 90 Pakistani players from 22 yards. This time Pakistan came up with the plan against Sri Lankan spinner as Misbah said in the statement that the boys have viewed enough footages and stats to neutralize Sri Lankas top spinner.Misbah proved his claim right during the series as Pakistan only gave away 5 wickets to Hearth in the two matches, injury aside. When this series started, expectations from both teams were very high. It was pressure situation for Sri Lankan captain because of the absence of veteran batsman Mahela Jayawardene.Sri Lanka started the Galle Test very strongly as Pakistan seemed rattle against hosts but Pakistani leg-break bowler Yasir Shah proved man with the golden arm for the away team who picked most wickets, 24, during the series. With Yasir Shah’s leg-break and googlies, Sarfaraz and Asad’s match winning partnership, Pakistan managed to come out victorious in the first Test, thanks to brilliance of Pakistani young guns.Colombo Test will be remembered as a historic match for Sri Lankan cricket as Sri Lankan living legend Kumar Sangakkara announced retirement from all forms of cricket. Although he went out for duck in his final match on home soil yet cricket world would have applauded his services for the Sri Lankan cricket. Sri Lanka won the second match by seven wickets.Three-match series decider was played at Pallekele. Matthews-XI appeared a little rusty before the start of the Test match as Sri Lanka had to play the match without Sangakkara and Jayawardene. This was the first time after the Sangakkaras debut that Sri Lanka played without these two. It was not easy for Sri Lankan skipper to fill the Sangakkara sized hole.Pakistani dressing room was also in the same conundrum as Misbah had to play without his old partner Muhammad Hafeez, who went for his bowling action Test in India, and star fast bowler Wahab Riaz.Pakistan managed to win the Pallekele Test thanks to brilliance of Shan Masood and legendary batsman Younis Khan. The senior-junior pair put 217 runs together in the time of need.It is pertinent to mention here that the following factors may have been responsible for Pakistan’s victory against Sri Lanka too.Yasir Shah’s magical leg-spin:This was a dream-come-true series for Yasir Shah. Yasir Shah named various records to his name. He took 24 wickets during the series which was record performance by any Pakistani. Yasir Shah would have been applauded over his performance.Imran Khan – The lucky charm:Imran Khan is considered as lucky charm for Pakistan. Whenever he got the chance to represent his national side, he never disappointed the selectors. Moreover Pakistan never lost a single match that Imran Khan played. Imran took his first five-wicket haul in Test cricket in Pallekele Test.Hafeezs ban – Blessing in disguise:Hafeez’s ban proved blessing in disguise for Pakistan as Shan Masood got his chance in the team and he justified his selection by scoring a match-saving ton. Hafeez did not play the third test because he was banned from bowling due to suspected bowling action.Pakistan is going to play the first match of the ODI series against Sri Lanka tomorrow (Saturday 11 July).
