Somalia's Shebab kill at least six in Mogadishu hotel car bombing

MOGADISHU (AFP) - Somalias Shebab insurgents killed at least six people Sunday in a huge car bomb attack on a heavily guarded hotel in the capital Mogadishu that is also home to several diplomatic missions, officials and witnesses said.The suicide attack, the latest in a string of bomb blasts and killings in the war-torn Horn of Africa nation, came as US President Barack Obama left neighbouring Kenya and headed to Ethiopia, both key nations contributing troops to the African Union force battling the Al-Qaeda-affiliated group.In a statement quoted by jihadist websites, the Shebab said they attacked the Jazeera Palace hotel, home to the diplomatic missions of China, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates and is popular among Somali government officials and foreign visitors.We have seen around six people killed, most of them hotel security guards, said government security officer Mohamed Jama, adding that the toll might rise.The Shebab said the suicide bomber had attacked the hotel in retaliation for the killing of dozens of innocent civilians they claimed had died during attacks this week by Ethiopian forces against Shebab bases in southern Somalia.Local resident Abdihakim Ainte, a political analyst, was nearby when the bomb exploded and described a huge blast that smashed his window.The hotel was torn apart by the blast, with the side of the six-storey hotel demolished by the explosion, AFP reporters said. The enormous blast also sent a thick plume of smoke high into the air.Journalist Mohamed Abdikarim, who worked for Universal TV, was among those killed, the National Union of Somali Journalists said in a message of condolence to his family.The Jazeera is close to the fortified international airport, which houses the United Nations, Western diplomatic missions and AMISOM -- the AU force in Somalia. The hotel has also been the target of Shebab attacks in the past, including in 2012 when suicide bombers stormed the hotel while President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud was inside.Mohamud on Sunday condemned the heinous terrorist attack.The terrorists are shaken by the joint military offensive engaged by the Somali and AMISOM troops, and they are desperately targeting innocent civilians, he said. AMISOM, which helped to evacuate the wounded and rescue those who had been staying in the hotel, said the attack demonstrates the demonic agenda of the Shebab.The Shebab are fighting to overthrow Somalias Western-backed government which is propped up and protected by the 22,000-strong AMISOM force.On Saturday Shebab gunmen in Mogadishu also killed MP Abdulahi Hussein Mohamud, spraying his vehicle with gunfire as he travelled through a southern district of the city, killing him, his two guards and the driver.The Shebab said in a statement that its mujahedeen fighters targeted and killed a member of the parliament and his guards, adding that it will continue targeting lawmakers.The US president, speaking in Nairobi on Saturday, said that while the Shebab had been weakened, the overall security threat posed by the group remained.We have been able to decrease their effective control within Somalia and have weakened those networks operating here in East Africa. That doesnt mean the problem is solved, Obama said.We can degrade significantly the capacity of the terrorist organisations, but they can still do damage, he added.Somali government and AMISOM troops last week launched a fresh offensive it said was aimed at flushing the insurgents out of rural areas in southern Somalia, in an operation involving Ethiopian and Kenyan forces.Deployed to Somalia since 2007, AMISOM has helped push back Shebab across much of the countrys south, retaking towns and territory the group had held for years.US drone strikes have also taken their toll on Shebab, killing senior commanders, including the groups leader Ahmed Godane in September last year.

HAMBURG (AFP) - Rafael Nadal will mark his return to Hamburg after a seven-year absence with a tough opener against compatriot Fernando Verdasco.Nadal, down at 10 in the world after a tortuous year in which he lost his French Open title and suffered another early exit from Wimbledon, has decided to play the clay court tournament in a bid to resurrect his fortunes before heading for the US hard court season.Nadal, 29, has a 13-2 career lead over Verdasco but his compatriot has won their last two clashes -- on the hard courts of Miami earlier this year and on clay in Madrid in 2012.In his last visit to the German city, Nadal defeated Roger Federer in the 2008 final. He is 11-2 at the tournament, having only lost to Federer in 2007 and to former Roland Garros champion Gaston Gaudio in 2003.I am very happy to be back in Hamburg, I havent been here since 2008 so its great to be back in such a nice city. BAD GASTEIN (AFP) - Former US Open champion Samantha Stosur came from a set down to win the Bad Gastein WTA Open on Sunday with a 3-6, 7-6 (7/3), 6-2 triumph over Italian Karin Knapp.The 31-year-old Australian triumphed over Knapp who was playing her second match of the day after defeating compatriot and number one seed Sara Errani 7-6 (7/4), 4-6, 7-5 in the semi-finals.That match had been held over since Saturday because of rain.It was a very hard match today, said Stosur after her eighth career title.I was getting completely outplayed in that first set, and even though she was up in the second set too, I started to feel like I was doing a little better. Obviously she served for the match (5-4 in the second set) but I hung in there, got that set then played better and better from there.Its not ideal to be playing a semifinal and final in one day, a two-and-a-half-hour match in the morning then another two and a half hours in the afternoon, but unfortunately thats just what happens with the weather sometimes. And she did serve for the match, so she wasnt doing too badly either.

PARIS (AFP) - Chris Froome said he felt incredible after winning his second Tour de France title following Sundays 21st and final stage to Paris.Briton Froome, 30, crossed the line on the Champs Elysees arm-in-arm with his Sky teammates to clinch a second Grand Boucle crown following his 2013 success.This is such a great race, what can I say? I feel a lot of emotion, said Froome after a Tour in which he was doused with urine, spat at, insulted and accused of cheating.Of course it was a very, very difficult Tour, both on the bike and off it. MOSCOW (AFP) - Brazilian striker Hulk scored twice to bury the controversy of being axed from the World Cup draw as reigning champions Zenit St Petersburg cruised to a 4-1 win at Ural Yekaterinburg.Hulk had been set to feature alongside the likes of compatriot Ronaldo and Samuel Etoo at Saturdays draw for the 2018 World Cup in Russia, just days after blasting the countrys record on racism in the sport.However, his removal from the ceremony was attributed to him having to make the 1,000-mile trip to Yekaterinburg for Sundays game.As well as his brace, Russian international Artem Dzyuba and Portuguese Miguel Danny were also on target as Zenit went top of the Russian Premier League table.At the start, we experienced problems with controlling the ball, admitted Zenit manager Andre Villas-Boas.But after our first goal we managed to create the scoring opportunities and after that we were the best team on the pitch.In general it was a fantastic performance. CRANS-MONTANA (AFP) - Englishman Danny Willett drained three late birdies and fired a bogey-free final round of 65 to win the European Masters by one shot over compatriot Matthew Fitzpatrick at Crans-Montana on Sunday. The 27-year-old Yorkshireman, who held the halfway lead at last weeks British Open and eventually finished tied for sixth, hit a five-under par round that crucially included birdies at 13, 14 and 15 as Fitzpatrick, 20, paid the price for a bogey at the 11th. Tyrell Hatton was alone in third spot on 15 under, as English players swept the top three places, with Swedens Pelle Edberg a further shot back in fourth and Indias Anirban Lahiri completing the top five on 12 under, five shots adrift of Willett. LONDON (AFP) - American Marco Dawson fired a final round 64 to win the Senior Open at Sunningdale on Sunday and deny Scotlands Colin Montgomerie a maiden victory in the tournament. It was only the third career win for the 51-year-old, German-born Dawson who finished on 16-under, one shot ahead of German star, and last years winner, Bernhard Langer.Montgomerie had held the lead on the final day only to slip three strokes adrift at the finish with a 67. Bernhard made a phenomenal par on the 16th and Colin made a phenomenal par at the 17th, and I thought Wow, these guys arent going away, its going to be a little harder than I thought. Dawson told Sky Sports.It was great to play with them to see how they play and how they react, and I thought, Theyre not doing anything different than I am. Theyre hitting the same shots, making the same swings, making the same mistakes and making the same putts, so I just made a few more putts.

Golf: American Thompson rallies to win Meijer Classic

GRAND RAPIDS (AFP) - American Lexi Thompson came from behind to earn her fifth career USLPGA Tour win Sunday, firing a six-under 65 for a one-shot victory in the Meijer Classic.Thompson, who placed third at the Womens PGA Championship earlier this year, finished the week at the Blythefield Country Club at 18-under-par 266.Her score was four shots better than the previous tournament record of 270 set at the inaugural event by South Koreans Lee Mi-Rim and Park In-Bee in 2014 -- when Lee beat Park in a playoff for the title.American Lizette Salas began the day with a four-shot lead and closed with a one-under 70. She finished tied for second at 17-under 267 with Gerina Piller, who shot a seven-under 64.Ryu So-Yeon (66) finished three shots back in fourth place at 15-under with Kris Tamulis (68).Brittany Lang (66) ended in sole possession of sixth place at 14-under 270.

BOGOTA (AFP) - Controversial Australian Bernard Tomic retained his Bogota ATP title on Sunday with a 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 victory over Frances Adrian Mannarino.Second seed Tomic was playing his first tournament since his arrest in Miami earlier this month following a rowdy penthouse party.The 22-year-old had also been dumped from Australias Davis Cup squad after publically criticising his countrys ruling body.Tomic took his record in Bogota to 9-0 having also captured the title in 2014 with victory over Ivo Karlovic.

SUZUKA (AFP) - Former world MotoGP champion Casey Stoner suffered a broken shoulder and fractured leg at the Suzuka 8 Hours Race on Sunday.It was the Australians first competitive race in almost three years but it ended in disaster when he came off his Honda on a hairpin bend and was sent flying off his machine.Well my Suzuka8H ended spectacularlyStuck Throttle = Broken Scapula Fractured Tibia and a few more tweaks. Form not fitness behind Clarke's struggles, says Di Venuto

DERBY (AFP) - Australia captain Michael Clarkes run of modest scores is not being exacerbated by his longstanding physical problems, according to team batting coach Michael di Venuto.The 34-year-old Clarke is one of the outstanding batsmen of his generation, having scored over 8,500 Test runs, including 28 hundreds, at an average of more than 50.But he has compiled just two centuries in his last 26 Test innings and hasnt made a fifty at that level since returning on Australia recent tour of the West Indies.Clarke has had to cope with a chronic back complaint throughout his career but there are concerns that recent hamstring trouble has only made that condition worse.He hasnt looked his typical elegant self at the crease so far on the Ashes tour and, with the five-match series level at 1-1 following his sides 405-run thrashing of England at Lords, Australia would love to see Clarke back to his best come the third Test at Edgbaston, which starts on Wednesday.Di Venuto said that was possible given Clarke was suffering from no more than the kind of lean spell which afflicts all batsmen at some stage of their careers. LAHORE: (Dunya News) – Chief Minister Punjab Shahbaz Sharif has on Sunday said that the government is setting up 3600 mega watt power projects in Punjab. He said that the people responsible for those pointless sit-ins should now compensate for the wasted time, reported Dunya News.Presiding over a meeting on the power generating projects through gas at the CM House Lahore, CM Shahbaz said that Punjab government will set up a 1200 mega watt project in Bhakki area of Sheikhupura.Moreover, federal government will set up 2 projects of 2400 MW in Baloki and Haveli Bahadur Shah Jang. Shahbaz Sharif told that feasibility reports of all three projects have been prepared.CM Punjab said that precious time was wasted in pointless sit-ins and now the wasted time will be compensated with new resolve and extra hard work.

Peshawar: Nullah Budhni overflows again, water breaks into houses

PESHAWAR: (Dunya News) – Rains have been wreaking havoc in the country yet again and Nullah Budhni overflew on Sunday to add to the miseries of the Peshawar residents. Situation went worse when the water broke into the houses of the residents. Pakistan army arrived at the scene and started relief activities, reported Dunya News.Although the rain on Sunday morning brought the temperature down in Peshawar, it created new problems for the citizens at rainwater filled the roads creating problems for the traffic flow. As the rainwater from Khyber Agency arrived in Nullah Budhni, the Nullah overflew and people started evacuating the area as the water level kept rising.The houses situated along the Nullah Budhni were also affected by the water. Police arrived on the scene and closed down the Charsaddah Road for traffic, suspending even the pedestrian traffic on the road. City administration has also started constructing a bridge but the citizens blamed the administration for slow pace of work on the bridge.Army’s team also arrived on the scene due to emergency situation and suspended the road for traffic for a while.City administration has also announced to start operation against the encroachments along the Nullah Budhni. Provincial Disaster Management has also started taking measures in this regard.Land link to various areas also remained suspended due to the rain and electricity was also suspended. Police and rescue teams are also at the forefront along with the army in relief activities.
