Twin suicide attacks in north Cameroon kill 11

Posted:

YAOUND (AFP) - Eleven people were killed on Wednesday in northern Cameroon when two girls blew themselves up in twin attacks in a region repeatedly targeted by Nigeria-based Boko Haram jihadists, officials said. The girls, who were under 15, attacked the central market of the regional capital Maroua as well as the adjoining Hausa neighbourhood, regional governor Midjiyawa Bakari said.In a statement, the presidency said that 11 people had died and 32 were wounded in what it called cowardly and despicable acts.A source close to local authorities earlier confirmed the attack, saying two girls who were begging blew themselves up at around 3:00 pm (1400 GMT).A Cameroonian journalist, who was in the town at the time, described total panic in the town after the bombings. The attack is the second of its kind in Cameroon in the past 10 days.On July 12, two female suicide bombers blew themselves up in Fotokol, on the border with Nigeria, killing 10 civilians and a soldier from neighbouring Chad.Over the past two years Boko Haram has carried out several cross-border raids and abductions in northern Cameroon but the country, which is engaged in a regional fightback against the jihadists, had previously been spared from suicide attacks. The coalition, which has also drawn in Nigeria, Niger and Chad, has succeeded in retaking several towns and villages in northeast Nigeria from the insurgents.Their response in recent weeks, since President Muhammadu Buhari came to power in Nigeria vowing to defeat them, has been to step up their attacks, showing they are far from vanquished.

'World's oldest' Quran manuscripts found in UK

Posted:

(AFP) -- A Quran manuscript has been carbon dated to close to the time of the Prophet Mohammed, making it one of the oldest in the world, a British university said Wednesday. The two leaves of parchment, filled with surprisingly legible text from Islams holy book, have been dated to around the early seventh century, the University of Birmingham said. The tests carried out on the parchment of the Birmingham folios yield the strong probability that the animal from which it was taken was alive during the lifetime of the Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) or shortly afterwards, said David Thomas, professor of Christianity and Islam.Describing it as a startling result, he added that the text is very similar indeed to the Quran as have it today. This tends to support the view that the Quran that we now have is... very close indeed to the Quran as it was brought together in the early years of Islam, he said. The leaves, held in the universitys Mingana Collection, contain parts of chapters 18 to 20, written with ink in an early form of Arabic script known as Hijazi. This is indeed an exciting discovery, said Muhammad Isa Waley, lead curator for Persian and Turkish manuscripts at the British Library in London. We know now that these two folios, in a beautiful and surprisingly legible Hijazi hand, almost certainly date from the time of the first three Caliphs.According to the classic accounts, it was under the third Caliph, Uthman ibn Affan, that the Quranic text was compiled and edited in the order of Suras (chapters) familiar today. For many years the leaves were misbound with similar manuscripts dating from the late seventh century. They were spotted by an Italian academic, Alba Fedeli, while conducting research for her PhD.Fedeli said the leaves are from the same codex as a manuscript kept in the Bibliotheque Nationale de France in Paris, although that is currently dated a little later.Radiocarbon analysis of the Birmingham documents dates them to between 568 AD and 645 AD, with 95.4 percent accuracy.Muhammad Afzal, chairman of Birmingham Central Mosque, said he was honoured to read the text, adding: All the Muslims of the world would love to see this manuscript. The Quran manuscript will be placed on public display at the university between October 2 and October 25.
