Iran nuclear talks 'near the summit'

Posted:

VIENNA (AFP) - Iran and major world powers were late Sunday closer than ever to a historic nuclear deal on the eve of a new deadline set at marathon talks in Vienna. We have come a long way. We need to reach a peak and were very close, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said in Tehran. We are so close that if you look down from below you feel as if we have got there, but when you do get there you know there are still some steps to take, the Iranian news agency ISNA quoted him as saying.I hope we are finally entering the final phase of these marathon negotiations. I believe it, said French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius, who cancelled a trip to Africa to stay at the talks.Irans nuclear chief, Ali Akbar Salehi, told Iranian media that technical negotiations were de-facto completed. One remaining task was to re-read the entire document, which spans 100 pages, an Iranian diplomat told AFP.Sometimes a country demands that we change a word, sparking several hours of discussions because the meaning can change completely, he said. The talks seek to nail down a deal curbing Irans nuclear activities to make it extremely difficult for Tehran -- which denies any such goal -- to develop the atomic bomb.In return Iran will be granted staggered relief from painful sanctions, although the six powers insist on the option of reimposing the restrictions if Tehran breaches the agreement. But despite optimism early Sunday that a deal would be clinched during the day, the talks looked set to run into Monday, the latest in a string of deadlines in 16 days of talks in the Austrian capital.A senior US State Department official said major issues remain to be resolved in these talks.Earlier, US Secretary of State John Kerry, embroiled in talks with his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif in Vienna since June 27, was cautiously upbeat.I think were getting to some real decisions. So I will say, because we have a few tough things to do, I remain hopeful. Hopeful, Kerry said, calling his latest meeting with Zarif positive.Zarif later told journalists from the balcony of the hotel hosting the negotiations there was still work to do on Monday.Asked whether the talks might be prolonged beyond the current deadline, he replied: No extension. We finish, hopefully.EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini who chairs the P51 group -- the US, Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany -- negotiating with Iran said on Twitter that these were the decisive hours.Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov arrived back in Vienna to rejoin the talks, along with Moscows top negotiator Sergei Ryabkov.British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond, however, left the discussions on Sunday but was expected to return on Monday morning.A German diplomatic source cautioned the talks could yet fail. But we really are nearly there. The decisive moment has arrived. If Tehran is ready to take the final steps, then things can go very quickly, the source said late Sunday.Under a framework deal reached in Lausanne in April, Iran is to slash the number of its centrifuges from more than 19,000 to just over 6,000 and sharply cut its stocks of enriched uranium.Negotiators left the thorniest issues until last, including a mechanism for lifting interlocking EU, US and UN sanctions.A new hurdle was thrown up in recent days, with the Iranian delegation insisting a UN arms embargo be lifted once a deal is reached. The talks have also stumbled on demands to give UN nuclear inspectors access to military sites, to probe suspicions Iran sought to develop nuclear weapons in the past.A final agreement would be a diplomatic victory for US President Barack Obama, who has made the talks a centrepiece of his foreign policy, and for Rouhani, a moderate seeking to end his countrys diplomatic isolation. Both have faced opposition from hardliners at home, as well as from Irans arch-foe Israel, believed to be the Middle Easts only nuclear-armed state, although it has never confirmed this status.Saudi Arabia and other Sunni-ruled Gulf Arab states are also deeply suspicious of Shiite Iran, accusing it of fomenting unrest in Syria, Yemen and other flashpoints.

String of Baghdad bombings kills 21: police

BAGHDAD (AFP) - A string of bomb explosions, including two suicide attacks, killed at least 21 people and wounded 62 in Shiite-dominated neighbourhoods of Baghdad Sunday, Iraqi police and medical sources said. The northeastern area of Al-Shaab was rocked by two explosions, at least one of which was caused by an attacker who detonated his suicide vest, a police colonel and an interior ministry official said.At least three of the 11 people killed in those blasts were members of the security forces, police said. The double explosion, which occurred near a market, left at least 23 people wounded.A suicide attacker also blew up his car bomb on Adan square, in northwestern Baghdad, just before the meal that breaks the dawn-to-dusk fast during the holy Muslim month of Ramadan. At least six people were killed and 20 wounded in the attack on the square, which was already targeted in February and has been frequently hit over the years. In Al Bunuk area, a car bomb also went off near a popular restaurant, killing at least two people and leaving 11 wounded, the same sources said. Two other people were killed and eight wounded when another explosives-laden vehicle blew up in the Iskan neighbourhood. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for any of the explosions, but most such attacks are carried out by the Islamic State jihadist group. There had been fears that IS would intensify attacks in Baghdad during Ramadan, but with the fasting month nearing its end, there had been no surge in bombings until Sunday.

'At least 18 killed' in attack near Afghanistan military base

Posted:

KHOST (AFP) - At least 18 civilians were killed and six wounded Sunday in a suicide car bomb attack near a military base in Afghanistans eastern province of Khost, where Afghan and foreign soldiers are stationed, authorities said. The bomber detonated the explosives at a military roadblock near the entrance to Camp Chapman as people were rushing to get home for iftar, the meal breaking the Ramadan fast, said Faizullah Ghairat, the Khost city police chief. There was no immediate claim of responsibility, but the Taliban -- which last week held its first face-to-face peace talks with the Afghan government -- has often targeted Afghan and foreign troops. The insurgents launched a countrywide offensive in late April, stepping up attacks on government and foreign targets despite the nascent peace talks in what is expected to be the bloodiest fighting season in a decade. However it is ordinary Afghans who are paying the price, the UN mission in the country has said, with almost 1,000 civilians killed during the first four months of this year, a sharp jump from the same period last year.We counted 18 dead and six wounded, said a doctor at a hospital in Khost city Sunday.Ghairat put the toll at 25 dead and 16 wounded, adding that they were all civilians.Foreign troops including US soldiers are stationed at Camp Chapman alongside Afghan soldiers.A statement from the NATO mission in Afghanistan said it was aware of the blast, but did not elaborate. In 2009, Camp Chapman was the target of a spectacular suicide attack claimed by Al-Qaeda. Seven CIA American officials were killed in the deadliest assault on the US agency since 1983, when eight officers died in an attack on a military base in Beirut. In 2010, 24 Taliban militants, some wearing US uniforms, were killed when they tried to storm Camp Chapman and another nearby US base, Camp Salerno. The base was hit again by a suicide car bomb in 2012 that killed three Afghans in a blast powerful enough to rattle windows four kilometres (two miles) away.Camp Chapman is located less than four kilometres (2.4 miles) from the city of Khost, which is near the Pakistani border, a volatile region where the Taliban but also a multitude of armed Islamist groups hold sway.Earlier Sunday, officials said at least two civilians had been killed in a roadside bomb blast, blaming the attack on the Taliban.Four other Afghans and two police were wounded when a police vehicle hit the roadside bomb in Kunduz city on Sunday, provincial police spokesman Sayed Sarwar Husseini told AFP. Roadside bombs have been the Talibans weapon of choice in their war against foreign and Afghan security forces, now in its 14th year. The bombs also increasingly kill and wound civilians. The Taliban, who promised to safeguard civilian lives during their offensive, are known to distance themselves from attacks that result in high civilian casualties.Last week, Afghan and Taliban negotiators held their first face-to-face talks in Pakistan, where the Taliban demanding among other things the removal of all foreign troops from Afghanistan.Afghan negotiators said Thursday their next round of talks with the Taliban would focus in detail on ways to end bloodshed in the country, wracked by nearly 40 years of war.NATO ended its combat mission in Afghanistan in December, leaving local forces to battle the Taliban alone, but a residual force remains for training and counter-terrorism operations.

Fifteen killed in illegal Chinese fireworks warehouse blast

BEIJING (AFP) - Fifteen people were killed and more than a dozen injured in China Sunday when an illegal fireworks warehouse exploded in the northern Hebei province, state media reported. The blast Sunday morning shattered windows up to one kilometre (0.6 miles) away from the factory in Dongwang Township, Ningjin county, local officials told state-run news agency Xinhua. Bloodstains were seen at the gate of a nearby garment factory, Xinhua said, adding that heavy rescue machines were still being brought to the site by evening.Investigators are looking into the cause of the explosion, the Ningjin government said.

Euro dips in Asian trade as Greek exit looms

Posted:

TOKYO (AFP) - The euro dipped in Asia on Monday after eurozone leaders set Greece a brutal ultimatum for a desperately needed bailout deal, as the cash-strapped nations exit from the single currency loomed ever larger. The common currency stood at $1.1129 after markets opened at 7:00 am (2200 GMT Sunday) in Tokyo, down from $1.1149 in New York late Friday. In earlier electronic trading, the euro fell as low as $1.1089.The unit was also weaker at 136.58 yen against 136.86 yen in US trade.Market reaction in the euro is surprisingly muted, said Steven Englander, global head of Group-of-10 currency strategy at Citigroup. The absence of agreement and toughness of terms are eye-catching, but investors are waiting for the outcome more than trying to anticipate it.Hawkish Germany pushed for a Greek time out from the euro if leftist Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras fails to agree to tough take-it-or-leave-it terms for a three-year rescue plan worth up to 86 billion euros ($96 billion).Greece said the plans were very bad, but with its banks set to run dry in days it looked to have little choice but to bow to reform demands that effectively rob Athens of control of much its finances. The dramatic weekend of backroom dealings in Brussels threatened to leave the European Union more divided than at any time in its 50-year history, and by a currency that was meant to bring it together. There will be no agreement at any price, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said as she arrived for the summit of 19 eurozone leaders, complaining of a loss of trust in Athens and warning of tough negotiations ahead.Radical Greek leader Tsipras insisted Sunday a deal was possible if all parties want it, adding that he was ready for an honest compromise on Greeces plans for tax cuts and pension reform.Tsipras was elected in January vowing to end five years of austerity tied to two previous bailouts since 2010 that have left Greece with debt worth nearly 180 percent of its GDP, and he has since become a standard-bearer for leftist parties across the continent. The tensions in Brussels were underscored when EU President Donald Tusk halted the summit midway for three-way talks between Tsipras, Merkel and French President Francois Hollande. What we can see is that the optimism with which markets were travelling into the weekend looks misplaced, Ray Attrill, co-head of forex strategy at National Australia Bank, said in a commentary early Monday. The eurozone turned the screw after finance ministers finished two days of intense talks on Greeces reform proposals drawn up to satisfy its international creditors -- the EU, the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund. The Greek parliament approved the plans on Saturday, despite them being similar to those rejected by Greeks in a controversial referendum on July 5.

Bowlers, Soumya shine as Bangladesh level series

Posted:

DHAKA (AFP) - Soumya Sarkar and Mahmudullah struck half-centuries after Bangladesh dismissed South Africa cheaply, crushing the Proteas by seven wickets in the second one-day international to tie the three-match series in Dhaka Sunday.Soumya hit a stroke-filled unbeaten 88 while Mahmudullah made 50 as Bangladesh raced to 167-3 with more than 22 overs in hand, keeping Bangladesh in the series after Fridays first game loss.Earlier the home team made swift work of the visitors, bowling with heart for 162 runs in 46 overs, effectively making the contest a one-sided affair. Kagiso Rabada, who had set a new one-day debut bowling record in the previous match, raised hopes when he bowled out Tamim Iqbal (five) and Litton Das (17).But Soumya and Mahmudullah stood firm for a 135-run third wicket stand as the Tigers carried the game safely in front of packed stadium.Soumya, who faced 79 balls and hit 13 fours and a six, swept Imran Tahir over the mid wicket fence to complete the emphatic victory -- only Bangladeshs second against South Africa in 16 ODIs.This was a much-needed win, said Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Mortaza. The last eight months we have been playing well. We lost the last four matches but we have come back, he said. The win, which followed Bangladeshs steady progress in one-day rankings, also cemented their place in the eight-team ICC Champions Trophy, scheduled to be held in England in 2017.Only the hosts and seven other top-ranked ODI teams are eligible to qualify for the tournament.Earlier, Nasir Hossain finished with a career best 3-26 while left-arm pacer Mustafizur Rahman grabbed 3-38 as South Africa were bowled out with their lowest score against Bangladesh on a slow pitch at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium.Mustafizur drew the first blood in the fifth over when he forced a leading edge from opener Quinton de Kock as Sabbir Rahman took a simple catch at backward point.Rubel Hossain, who returned to the starting lineup for leg-spinner Jubair Hossain, made an instant impact by knocking the stumps off Hashim Amla (22).South Africa began to feel the pressure when Nasir bowled Rilee Rossouw off his first ball, and Mahmudullah sent David Miller home by forcing him to give a simple catch to Mashrafe Mortaza at short mid wicket to leave the visitors wobbling at 74-4.Faf Du Plessis, who looked solid holding one end, holed out a catch at long-on to Soumya Sarkar off Nasir. His departure after the top score of 41 from 64 balls firmly swung the game in favour of the hosts.Mustafizur deceived JP Duminy with an off cutter, forcing him to give a catch at short cover to Sabbir for 13 before Rubel trapped Chris Morris leg-before for 12.Farhaan Behardien, who survived a leg-before decision after it was overturned by the TV umpire, held Bangladesh off to score 36 before he became the last man to be dismissed.South Africa captain Hashim Amla blamed his sides batting for the loss.It was not a 160-wicket. We had a really bad day and did not apply ourselves, he said.Credit to Bangladesh. The key on this wicket is to get in and make it count. We did not do that today, he added. The third and final match of the series will be held in Chittagong on July 15.

Bayliss tells Cook to play his own game

Posted:

CARDIFF (AFP) - Trevor Bayliss may have told England they needed to fight fire with fire if they are to regain the Ashes, but the teams new Australian coach does not want captain Alastair Cook to change his batting style.Baylisss first game in charge saw England thrash Australia by 169 runs in the first Test in Cardiff on Saturday with more than a day to spare as they went 1-0 up in the five-match Ashes series.Cook, often criticised for formulaic leadership, saw just about every one of his bowling and fielding changes pay off at Sophia Gardens. He also held three catches, including a stunning effort in an unusual short mid-wicket position to dismiss Brad Haddin on Saturday. The one downside for Cook was that the opening batsman added just 32 runs in all to his tally of 9,000 which had already seen the 30-year-old left-hander become Englands all-time leading Test run-scorer. Cook, as if conscious of the need to buy into the attacking mindset which served England well during a preceding one-day series win over New Zealand for which he was not selected, appeared keener to go down the pitch to off-spinner Nathan Lyon more often than in previous Ashes contests. But former Sri Lanka and New South Wales coach Bayliss said there was no need for either Cook or the experienced Ian Bell, who enjoyed a welcome return to form with a second-innings 60 at Sophia Gardens, to abandon the methods that had brought them a combined 49 hundreds in Test cricket. My message to Alastair Cook is to go out and play his own way, said Bayliss on Sunday. Certainly, people like Alastair and Belly have scored plenty of Test hundreds. My advice to them would be to go out and bat like you always have done. Those two guys are class players and can change their game to suit any situation. The rest of the guys can bat around them.England, looking to regain the Ashes after a humiliating 5-0 defeat in Australia in 2013/14, will head to Lords for the second Test on Thursday with an unchanged 13-man squad -- fast bowler Steven Finn and uncapped leg-spinner Adil Rashid again joining the Cardiff XI.Bayliss believes his side will arrive at the home of cricket having understood what he means by aggressive cricket.Yes, we were talking as a group about being mentally aggressive -- not necessarily trying to whack sixes and fours, but if you are mentally aggressive when those boundary balls do come along your feet are moving and you put them away, Bayliss explained. When England were losing at home to Sri Lanka last year and struggling early on in a series with India they eventually won, there were calls for Cook to be stripped of the England captaincy, if only to prolong his future as a Test opener. However, the then England management kept their faith in Cook as a Test skipper, although they did axe him from the World Cup squad. I think that the decision to stick with Alastair has been justified, because his captaincy in this game was fantastic, said Bayliss.Joe Root, Englands man of the match in Cardiff for his first innings 134, is the heir apparent as vice-captain but Bayliss said there was no need to rush the 24-year-old into a position of greater responsibility.Joe Root is the vice-captain, and Im sure he will do a good job in the future some time, Bayliss said.It may be a little early for him as yet, but hes been given the job as vice-captain to learn.

Australia's Smith no longer number one

Posted:

CARDIFF (AFP) - Australias Steven Smith is no longer the worlds number one ranked Test batsman after twice being out cheaply in his sides crushing opening Ashes defeat by England in Cardiff.Smith had gone into the match top of the International Cricket Council Test batting rankings, with five hundreds in his last six Tests at an average of 131.5.But several England players questioned whether Smiths unorthodox technique would yield similar results in British conditions.Smith was twice out for 33 as Ashes-holders Australia lost by a heavy 169 runs with more than a day to spare at Cardiffs Sophia Gardens on Saturday to go 1-0 down in the five-match series. That was enough to drop him down to second place in the latest ICC batting rankings published Sunday, with South Africas AB de Villiers now top of the pile.Englands Joe Root climbed to a career-high fourth on the back of his 134 in Cardiff which the 24-year-old said was the best of his seven Test hundreds. The Yorkshireman made 60 in the second innings as England extended their lead beyond 400.In the bowling rankings, Englands Stuart Broad, who took five wickets in Cardiff and played a key role in Australias collapse on Saturday as they lost four wickets for nine runs, moved up to fifth place.South Africa fast bowler Dale Steyn remained top of the rankings, with James Anderson, Broads new-ball partner, staying in second place. However, Mitchell Johnson -- who took 37 wickets during Australias 5-0 Ashes rout of England in 2013/14 - dropped two positions to seventh after the left-arm fast bowler managed just two wickets for 180 runs in Cardiff.

Australia 'hopeful' over Starc fitness

Posted:

CARDIFF (AFP) - Australia are optimistic fast bowler Mitchell Starc will be fit to face England in the second Ashes Test at Lords starting on Thursday. The left-arm paceman suffered a right ankle injury during the series opener in Cardiff and needed pain-killing injections to finish the game, which England won by 169 runs with more than a day to spare on Saturday to go 1-0 up in the five-match series. With just four days until the second Test gets underway, concerns had been voiced as to whether Starc, who was Australias leading bowler at Cardiffs Sophia Gardens with seven wickets in 40.1 overs, would have sufficient time in which to recover.Australia do have experienced fast bowler Peter Siddle, who didnt play in the first Test, in a squad which lost fellow right-arm quick Ryan Harris on the eve of the Ashes wen the veteran bowler announced his retirement from all cricket because of a knee injury. But team physiotherapist Alex Kountouris tried to allay fears over Starcs fitness by telling reporters on Sunday: We will monitor him over the next few days but the plan is for him to take part in some light training.Kountouris added: Mitchell experienced some pain in the back of his right ankle during the Test match which is common with fast-bowlers.He was in discomfort while bowling but since then has improved significantly. We are hopeful he will be available for selection for the second Test beginning on Thursday.Pat Cummins, added to the squad after Harriss retirement, has not played a first class match in nearly two years because of injury problems.Cummins is unlikely to feature at Lords but could play in the tour match against Derbyshire starting on July 23.Were lucky enough to have a few (fast bowlers) waiting in the wings. Patrick Cummins has joined us and hes ready to go, Australia coach Darren Lehmann said Sunday.Peter Siddle has played a lot of Test cricket, he added of the 56-times capped 30-year-old Victorian stalwart.Well have to wait, weigh up and see how Mitchell Starc goes in the next couple of days and make a decision. But weve got enough armoury to get 20 wickets.

Kumar rounds off comprehensive Indian victory

Posted:

HARARE (AFP) - Half-centuries from opening batsmen Ajinkya Rahane and Murali Vijay and four wickets from Bhuvneshwar Kumar saw India beat Zimbabwe by 62 runs in the second one-day international and take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series on Sunday.Rahane and Vijay put on 112 for the first wicket after India were sent in to bat, and although the tourists could not fully capitalise on that platform, they were still able to post 271 for eight. In reply, Zimbabwe were pegged back by Kumars brilliant first spell, which brought the wickets of Hamilton Masakadza and the in-form Elton Chigumbura.Chamu Chibhabha made 72, but the hosts faded after he was run out and they were eventually bowled out for 209, with Kumar finishing with figures of 4 for 33.After collapsing to 87 for five in Fridays first ODI, which they still won by four runs, India took a circumspect approach on Sunday as Rahane and Vijay batted out the opening 26 overs.I was not playing at my best, but according to the conditions we decided not to give early wickets because then the team is under more pressure, Vijay said.We thought 260 or 270 was a good score on this wicket because it was getting slower and lower. While Rahanes 63 was his 10th fifty in ODIs, Vijay had never before crossed 33 and so his 72 was a landmark for the Test regular.Despite their dismissals, India went into the final 10 overs well set on 194 for two, but then lost Fridays centurion Ambati Rayudu for 41 and Manoj Tiwary for 22.Seamer Neville Madziva ensured that Zimbabwe finished strongly as he picked up three wickets at the death to close with career-best figures of 4 for 49 in 10 overs. With Kumar taking 2 for 19 in his initial six-over spell, Zimbabwe fell to 43 for three in reply and rarely threatened from that point. When Chibhabha was run out in a mix-up with Sikandar Raza Butt the game was effectively up, and although Richmond Mutumbami and Graeme Cremer put on 52 for the seventh wicket, Kumar returned to finish the job off.The third ODI takes place on Tuesday, and will also be played at Harare Sports Club.

Malala turns 18, says world failing Syrian children

BEIRUT (AFP) - Malala Yousafzai told world leaders they were failing Syrias children, as the Nobel Peace Prize winner spent her 18th birthday Sunday on the Syrian border. As she became an adult, the teenager, who was shot by militants in her native Pakistan for campaigning for girls rights, opened a school for more than 200 Syrian girls living in refugee camps in Lebanons Bekaa Valley. The Malala Yousafzai All-Girls School will offer education and skills training to girls aged 14 to 18.I am honoured to mark my 18th birthday with the brave and inspiring girls of Syria, Yousafzai said in a statement received in London.I am here on behalf of the 28 million children who are kept from the classroom because of armed conflict.Their courage and dedication to continue their schooling in difficult conditions inspires people around the world and it is our duty to stand by them.On this day, I have a message for the leaders of this country, this region and the world: you are failing the Syrian people, especially Syrias children. This is a heartbreaking tragedy -- the worlds worst refugee crisis in decades.Malala later met with Lebanese Prime Minister Tammam Salam at his home in Beirut, accompanied by her father and Noura Jumblatt, head of the Kayany Foundation who invited Malala to visit.Syrian children are suffering the most, being refugees for more than four years, deprived of education, Malala told BBC News. The worst thing is that the international community and world leaders are not paying attention and thats what drives me to come here and celebrate my birthday and to say to world leaders: you need to focus on it and you need to invest here, otherwise it will be a generation lost.Lebanon is hosting nearly 1.2 million registered Syrian refugees, though the total number in the country may be even higher. The influx has placed strains on Lebanon, which has just four million citizens. The Lebanese government has prevented the establishment of official refugee camps, giving rise to informal shanties known as tented settlements in rural areas.Malala was flown to Britain for treatment after the Pakistani Taliban tried to kill her in October 2012, and now lives permanently in Britain with her family.

Nuclear agreement a 'hard sell' to US Congress

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - A top US Republican said a potential historic nuclear deal with Iran would be a hard sell in Congress, as talks neared their final hour in Vienna on Sunday. It appears as if the administrations approach to this was to reach whatever agreement the Iranians are willing to enter into, US Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said in an interview broadcast on Fox News Sunday.I think its going to be a very hard sell -- if its completed -- in Congress, McConnell said.Talks between world powers and Iran were entering what France described as the final phase Sunday, but Washington warned major issues must still be overcome ahead of the latest deadline on Monday for an agreement. The talks seek to nail down a deal curbing Irans nuclear activities to make it extremely difficult for Tehran -- which denies any such goal -- to develop the atomic bomb.In return Iran will be granted staggered relief from painful sanctions, although the six powers insist on the option of re-imposing the restrictions if Tehran breaches the deal.No deal is better than a bad deal. And from everything thats leaked from these negotiations, the administrations backed away from almost all of the guidelines that they set up for themselves, House Speaker John Boehner said in an interview that aired on CBSs Face the Nation.Republican Senator Tom Cotton furthered Boehners remarks stating that he thought any deal could be potentially hazardous.I think whatever deal comes out of this weekend, its going to be dangerous for the United States and dangerous for the world, Cotton said.Senator Lindsey Graham, a Republican contender for the 2016 presidential race, meanwhile said he would use military force if Iran went too far with its nuclear program. If Iran gets a nuclear weapon, theyre the biggest threat to the world. And I would not allow that to happen, and they need to know that, Graham said. However, he added: The interim deal has worked better than I thought it would. Hats off to John Kerry. From across the aisle, Democrat Bob Menedez echoed the Republicans worries, stating that the United States was not rolling back Irans elicit nuclear infrastructure, but rolling back sanctions for verification.Ill judge the agreement based upon what it is. But we have to make very clear that there is a deterrence in the longer term, he said.
