Karachi: Heavy rain destroys roads, 117 feeders trip

KARACHI (Dunya News) – Heavy rain in Karachi destroyed roads and caused 117 feeders to trip. Citizens faced difficulties due to the electrical power outages. The administration declared rain emergency in light of the current situation. Vacations of officials of concerned departments were also suspended. Commissioner Karachi Shoaib Ahmed Siddiqui visited different affected areas and reviewed the situation after the rainfall.According to the details, an emergency meeting presided by Siddiqui was called. Siddiqui stated that legal action will be taken against those officials of concerned departments who are found absent or those who deliberately avoid work. He ordered the cleaning of canals, eradication of encroachments, removal of dangerous sign boards and advised round the clock working.

Gujranwala: Noxious gas spreads in area as pipes explode in ice factory

GUJRANWALA (Dunya News) – Noxious gas started to spread in the area as gas pipes exploded in an ice factory in Gujranwala on early Wednesday morning. 35 people lost consciousness while the factory owner’s son suffocated to death. Residents of the area are finding it difficult to breath due to the gas emission.Rescue operations are underway.

Lahore becomes Venice: Administration sleeps as CM out of country

LAHORE: (Dunya News) – Rain in Lahore on Tuesday made the streets, markets and metro underpasses look like streams and lakes of water as the Chief Minister Punjab Shahbaz Sharif is not in town and the administration did not at all look like working in his absence, reported Dunya News.According to the details, there was heavy rain in Lahore on Tuesday morning. The administration might have been working in the presence of CM Shahbaz but since he is not in the city, the administration also seems to be enjoying their Eid vacation.Water was drained off from Model Town and the CM’s residence in the area almost immediately but the adjacent areas and Ferozpur Road portrayed an entirely different picture.Citizens kept cursing the administration but bureaucracy seemed to sleeping at home. The situation is still the same and many places are still under water despite lapse of several hours.

Floods in Skardu, Chitral spell devastation

SKARDU (Dunya News) – More than a dozen homes were leveled in as a lake broke away from glacier on Tuesday. Chitral also witnessed devastation as food and medicines fell short in supply as well during the floods. Pakistan Army’s effort for rehabilitation is under, reported Dunya News.In Skardu, more than 60 villages were badly affected by flood. More than 10 houses, 16 mosques, 7 schools and 9 electricity houses were destroyed.In Chitral, flood ravaged the city as well as medicine and food supplies fell short. Emergency has been declared in the city. Pakistan Army’s efforts are underway as Corps Commanders Peshawar Lieutanent General Hadayat Rehman inspected Army’s efforts to counter the floods.According to Disaster Management Cell the floods have affected nearly 80% of the populace of the city. 146 homes have been completely destroyed while 35 bridges have been washed away as well.According to the authorities, Charsadda and Nowshera face fear of flooding as well.Meanwhile in Sindh, floods have also taken their toll.In DG Khan, thousands of people are trapped as protective barriers broke away.River Chenab has wreaked havoc in Shujabad whereas water level in Sutlej has risen as well.From Layyah to Ghotki, many villages have drowned under the flood which has caused destruction of thousands acres of agricultural land.In Kahror Laal Hussain, flood has submerged many villages while Kot Addu potrays a similar picture.In DG Khan, 2 protective barriers broke causing inconvenience to thousands.In Rahim Yar Khan, areas around Charan have been damaged due to the flood.Ghotki and 10 nearing villages have also faced the blunt of the damage due to floods where Army has been called near Sukkur barrage to help with the proceedings.In Moch, level of water in Sindh river has increased and the water has entered nearby villiages.In Koh Suleman, due to overflow of water 6 villages have drowned in addition to a vast area of fields getting destroyed.

CM Khattak missing as rain wreaks havoc in KP

PESHAWAR: (Dunya News) – Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhawa (KP) Pervez Khattak is once again missing as the rain wreaks havoc in the province. It’s been one week today since the Chitral district is cut off from the mainland KP yet the CM KP is yet to be seen. The locals of the district have on Tuesday started putting up ads for the missing CM KP, reported Dunya News.While the opposition parties are ready to put up ads for the missing CM, this is not the first time that Khattak is missing in the hour of crisis. Last year too, the locals were looking for the CM during the floods. He also remains missing whenever there is a major terror incident in the province. Who would forget Pervez Khattak’s dance on the container in Islamabad while more than 50 had died due to flood in Peshawar last year?Many other areas of the province are also under the threat of flood after Chitral but the CM of the province is still missing.

PPP party meeting convened by Bilawal, Zardari

DUBAI: (Dunya News) – Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) meeting was convened by Co-chairmen of the party Asif Ali Zardari and his son Bilawal Bhutto Zardari in Dubai on Tuesday. It was decided in the meeting that the Sindh cabinet will be reshuffled while the number of Chief Minister Sindh’s advisors will also be reduced, reported Dunya News.The meeting held in Dubai was also attended by CM Sindh Syed Qaim Ali Shah, Local Body minister Sharjeel Memon and the Provincial Finance Minister Murad Ali Shah.According to sources, it was also decided in the meeting that actions against the corrupt bureaucrats will be expedited. Sources also told that a woman minister will be added to the cabinet.

'You are a treasure': U.S. Judge tells Dr Bajwa

(Web Desk) – Dr Saeed Bajwa, a renowned neuro surgeon and upstanding U.S. citizen has recently been acquitted from fake charges in a case that stretched across 4 years.Dr Bajwa’s acquittal is unique in its nature as the charges against him mainly stemmed from ‘misidentification’ from culprits which were later convicted. The reason behind the ‘misidentification’ by the eventual culprits has been found as they tried to reduce in their own sentencing in lieu of getting their own charges dropped.Regardless of the reason as to why the good name of Dr Bajwa was tried to be dragged through the mud, the case went on for 4 long years which incurred a hefty legal cost as well as emotional trauma for Saeed Bajwa.Dr Bajwa was then made to plead a meaningless sentence as the government prosecution failed to come up with ample evidence.The plethora of charges against Dr Bajwa was dropped as the Federal Court Judge O’Grady told the prosecution that it had come short of proving the accusations.Afterwards Dr Bajwa made his statement where he apologized for omission of the detail under which he pleaded to the meaningless sentence.The Federal Judge Court O’Grady looked Dr Bajwa in the eye and said I thank God for people like you. You are a treasure in the presence of whole courtroom where friends, family, colleagues and patients had gathered.The incident highlights and renews world’s faith in U.S. justice system.

He said that Kashmir is a core issue without which dialogues cannot go forward.Pakistani High Commissioner Abdul Basit said that he is hopeful that the leaders of the two countries will sit together for negotiations.It is pertinent to mention here that senior leaders of Hurriyat Conference Ali Gillani and Yasin Malik have refused to attend the Eid Milan party because of Nawaz Sharif and Narendra Modi’s omission of Kashimir issue from their joint declaration.

Army Chief orders Army to extend all possible help to flood victims

RAWALPINDI (Dunya News) – Army Chief General Raheel Sharif has directed Pakistan Army to extend all possible help to victims of floods. General Raheel said that full preparation should be done to counter floods, reported Dunya News.According to Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR), General Raheel has directed Pakistan Army to provide all possible aid to flood affectees including that of Chitral and other areas.Army Chief has also directed all Corps Commanders to keep an eye on the situation and prepare for the possibility of floods.

S.Africa 248 all out in first innings against Bangladesh

CHITTAGONG (AFP) - South Africa were all out for 248 in their first innings on the opening day of the first cricket Test against Bangladesh at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chittagong on Tuesday.Temba Bavuma top-scored with 54 and his was the last wicket to fall. He was dismissed by Mustafizur Rahman, who finished with 4-37.

Cambodia opposition activists jailed for up to 20 years lawyer

PHNOM PENH (AFP) - Eleven Cambodian opposition members and activists were jailed on insurrection charges Tuesday, a defence lawyer said, including three who received a 20-year sentence.Those jailed are from the opposition Cambodian National Rescue Party (CNRP) and were arrested during clashes with authorities in July 2014 against the closure of Phnom Penhs main designated protest site.This is a very serious sentencing. We lawyers cannot accept these convictions, Sam Sokong, one of the groups defence counsel told AFP, adding his eight other clients received seven years in jail.Local rights group LICADHO described the proceedings as a show trial with a predetermined ending, apparently set up only to intimidate the CNRP -- adding that the surprise sentencing was made without the presence of most of the groups lawyers.Cambodia has been ruled for 30 years by Prime Minister Hun Sen, a strongman who has tolerated little dissent during his time in office.The CNRP is the countrys main opposition party to Hun Sens Cambodian Peoples Party (CPP).The controversial insurrection charges were made at the end of a protracted political standoff between the CPP and the CNRP after the 2013 election.At the time opposition lawmakers were refusing to take their seats in parliament alleging that the election had been unfairly won by Hun Sen.A decision in July 2014 to close the capitals main protest site at Freedom Park sparked violent demonstrations with injuries on both sides.

Turkey attack spillover of IS war on Kurds: experts

BEIRUT (AFP) - A deadly suicide bombing in southern Turkey appears to be part of the Islamic State groups war against the Kurds, and shows the countrys growing vulnerability to the conflict in neighbouring Syria, analysts say.The attack on Monday on a gathering of pro-Kurdish activists in Suruc along the Turkish-Syrian border, which killed at least 32 people, bore the hallmarks of the extremist organisation.Thus far, even without an IS claim of responsibility, the group seems the most likely perpetrator, said Charles Lister, an analyst at the Brookings Doha Centre.The attack method, the specific target and the political implications of the attack all point towards an IS motive, for now.Turkey was quick to blame IS for the bombing of the cultural centre -- the first time it has directly accused the group of carrying out an act of terror on Turkish soil.The young victims were preparing for an aid mission to the devastated Syrian town of Kobane, which became a symbol of resistance against the jihadists, who were driven out by Kurdish forces in January.Since then, the Kurdish Peoples Protection Units (YPG) have gradually seized territory from IS in northern Syria with support from US-led air strikes.Their advances have prompted a counteroffensive, with IS attacking Kobane as well as the cities of Hasakeh and Qamishli in the past month alone.- Uptick in violence -Aaron Stein, a non-resident fellow at Washington-based think tank the Atlantic Council, described Mondays attack as a spillover of the Kurdish-IS fight in Syria.Rather than targeting Turkey, Stein said the Suruc bombing appeared to be more of an attack on Kurdish sympathisers of Kobane.He likened the blast to an attack on a rally organised by Turkeys main pro-Kurdish party in Diyarbakir, which killed four people in June.We have seen an uptick in violence against Kurds in Turkey, he told AFP.Analysts noted that the attack also follows a recent campaign in which Turkish security forces have arrested dozens of IS militants and sympathisers in raids across the country.It follows years of criticism of Ankara for allegedly turning a blind eye to the growing power of IS, which has used crossings along Turkeys long border with Syria as a route to bring in foreign fighters and weapons.There have been a number of arrests of IS sympathisers, and in general it seems like there has been a real but late crackdown on IS in Turkey, said Max Abrahms, a terrorism expert and professor at Northeastern University.The fact that there would then be presumably an IS attack against Turkey isnt at all surprising.- Risk of more attacks -Turkeys main aim in the Syria conflict has been the ousting of President Bashar al-Assad and containment of pro-Kurdish groups.Despite its tense relations with Syrias Kurds, the Turkish government described the Suruc bombing as an attack against the nation.Ankara accuses Syrias Kurdish forces of ties to Turkeys Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), which fought a 31-year insurgency and is listed as a terrorist group by the government.It has been alarmed by the growing power of Syrias Kurdish fighters, and unimpressed by their successes against IS.Analysts said the attack could strengthen Turkeys resolve to take on IS inside its war-torn neighbour, where a US-led coalition has been carrying out air raids against the jihadists since September.It will only encourage Turkey to get more involved in the fight against IS... including the greater possibility of ground forces in Syria, Abrahms said.This is really the only way in which I can see Turkey coming into line in terms of being a real supporter of this anti-IS coalition, if Turkey itself becomes subject to attack.Lister said there was a danger of more attacks on Turkish soil.In some respects, its surprising we havent seen more of this kind of spillover already, he said.But the real concern now is that this attack could spell the start of more frequent bombings and other such incidents immediately across the Syrian border.

Football: Tottenham's Stambouli joins PSG

Thieves steal ATM machine, but it falls out of getaway van

LYNNWOOD (AP) — Snohomish County authorities say two thieves suspected of stealing an ATM machine from a business made it as far as the parking lot, but the machine fell out of the getaway van.Sheriffs spokeswoman Shari Ireton said Monday that deputies have recovered the ATM machine. They believe two men backed up a white van to a business near Lynnwood at around 11 a.m. Sunday, cut the cables to the ATM and loaded it in to the van.Deputies believe the machine fell out of the van when the men drove too fast over a speed bump. The suspects drove away without it.Deputies found the van idling Monday morning. It had been reported stolen from Kent. The van was impounded so deputies could look for evidence.
