IMF 'ready to assist Greece if requested': Lagarde

WASHINGTON (AFP) - International Monetary Fund chief Christine Lagarde said on Monday that the global crisis lender would assist Greece if asked, a day after Greek voters rejected a prior bailout plan.The IMF has taken note of yesterdays referendum held in Greece. We are monitoring the situation closely and stand ready to assist Greece if requested to do so, Lagarde said in a brief statement.A Fund spokesperson said that Lagarde spoke during the day with Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, offering technical assistance to the government but reminding him that the IMF cannot disburse any financing to Athens because the country had defaulted on an IMF debt payment last week.In Sundays referendum, more than 61 percent of Greeks rejected creditor demands for further austerity in return for more bailout funds, a victory for the ruling leftist Syriza party that took office five months ago.European officials are to discuss the situation on Tuesday, with French President Francois Hollande and German Chancellor Angela Merkel saying the door was open for a return to negotiations on Greeces debt but calling on Athens to make serious proposals.In a debt-sustainability analysis last week, the IMF said that, in addition to more reforms needed from the Greek government, any new bailout program would require another 36 billion euros ($40 billion) from EU institutions, beyond what has already been committed.

With the crisis in Greece, with the Chinese market unstable, the demand we once saw for global oil is eroding quickly, said Carl Larry, a consultant for Frost & Sullivan in Houston.Analysts cited fears about Europe after Greece voted decisively against further austerity measures imposed by creditors, throwing its position in the currency bloc into doubt.The Greece crisis has also boosted the dollar, raising the cost of crude for those using other currencies.Volatility in Chinas equities markets spurred Beijing to step into support them, but served to underscore weaknesses in the Chinese economy that could impact energy consumption there.Bart Melek, head of commodity strategy at TD Securities, said on top of the doubts about petroleum demand, we have huge supply issues with OPEC pumping hugely above quota.Two members of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, Saudi Arabia and Iraq, together pumped about 900,000 barrels per day more in May 2015 than they did a year ago, said Matt Smith, analyst at ClipperData.Adding to current lofty production levels is the looming chance for a deal between nuclear negotiators from Iran and global powers that could result in the lifting of sanctions on Iran, opening the way for greater crude exports.

Signs of aging appear in mid-20s, study finds

MIAMI (AFP) - Aging is typically studied in the elderly, but a study released Monday said different rates of aging can be detected as early as the mid-20s.The findings in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences July 6 issue are based on a group of 954 people born in New Zealand in 1972 or 1973.Researchers collected data on the subjects kidney, liver and lung function, dental health, the blood vessels in the eyes as well as their metabolism and immune system function at age 26, 32 and 38.They also measured cholesterol, fitness levels and the length of the telomeres, which are the protective caps at the end of chromosomes that have been found to shorten with age.Using a total of 18 biological measurements, researchers determined a biological age for each participant at age 38 -- with some registering under 30 and others appearing to be nearly 60.When scientists looked closely at the ones who had aged more quickly, they found signs of deterioration were apparent at age 26, the age when the first set of biological measurements were taken.Most of those in the group were aging at the expected rate of one biological year per chronological year, or even less. Others were aging as fast as three biological years per chronological year. Those whose bodies were aging faster also scored worse on tests typically given to people over 60, including tests of balance and coordination and solving unfamiliar problems, said the study.And when a group of university students at Duke was asked to look at pictures of people in the group, they consistently rated as older those whose bodies were aging more quickly than the rest.Study authors said their findings pave the way for future tests that may be easier and cheaper to implement, so that people can find out how fast they are aging in their 20s, when they might be able to do something about it and possibly prevent age-related diseases.Previous research has shown that genes account for only about 20 percent of aging, leaving the rest up to health behaviors and the environment.That gives us some hope that medicine might be able to slow aging and give people more healthy active years, said senior author Terrie Moffitt, professor of psychology and neuroscience at Duke University.

PALLEKELE (AFP) - Shan Masood and Younis Khan compiled unbeaten centuries to keep Pakistan in the hunt for a landmark victory in the series-deciding third and final Test against Sri Lanka on Monday.Set a challenging target of 377 runs, the tourists recovered from a shaky 13-2 to move to 230 without further loss by stumps on the rain-free fourth day in Pallekele.Masood, the five-Test old left-hander, was unbeaten on 114, having reached his maiden century by lofting off-spinner Tharindu Kaushal for a six over long-on towards the end of play.Younis, who made his 100th Test appearance in the second match of the series, got to his 30th century in the days last over. The pair have put on 217 so far for the third wicket with Younis on 101.Pakistan will enter the final days play on Tuesday needing a further 147 runs with eight wickets in hand on a wearing, but easy-paced pitch at the Pallekele International Stadium.If Pakistan win, it will be the first time a visiting team will have scored more than 300 runs in the fourth innings to win a Test on Sri Lankan soil.Pakistans highest successful chase is 314 runs they made against Australia to win the Karachi Test way back in 1994.Earlier, Sri Lankas captain Angelo Mathews was last man out for 122 as the hosts took their overnight score of 228-5 to 313 before they were all out at the stroke of lunch.Pakistans fast bowler Imran Khan took all the five wickets that fell in the morning session in the space of 33 balls.Mathews, who came in to bat on Sunday afternoon with his team reduced to 35-3, anchored the innings for more than six hours in which he hit 12 boundaries and a six.Imran said he was delighted at his maiden five-wicket haul, but stressed it was a team effort that has got Pakistan this far in the match.We believed a turnaround was possible and we showed that today, he said. Anderson gives up on 'sledging'

LONDON (AFP) - James Anderson has insisted he no longer feels the need to sledge opponents as he prepared to lead Englands attack in another Ashes series against Australia.Much of the build-up to Wednesdays first Test in Cardiff has been about how much sledging or verbal abuse of opposition players will take place during the five-match series.Players and fans alike enjoyed the sporting atmosphere in which Englands preceding series against New Zealand took place, with the Kiwis long having given up on sledging.Lancashire paceman Anderson -- who was told to get ready for a broken fucking arm by Australia captain Michael Clarke during the last Ashes, which Australia won 5-0 on home soil in 2013/14 -- called last month for an end to Ashes sledging.This was met with ridicule by Australias Brad Haddin and Mitchell Johnson, who both pointed out that Anderson had rarely been shy of delivering a few verbals himself.The pre-Ashes phoney war has been in full swing for a while now - and Ive already been called a hypocrite, said Anderson, Englands leading Test wicket-taker, in Mondays edition of the Sun.Its all because I said that verbal confrontations are not something I need as much these days. Ive come to realise I dont need to chirp away.It was something I used effectively for a few years and it helped my game. But Im at a stage in my career where Im not keen to engage opponents in wars of words as much as I did.Anderson added: The response from Haddin and Johnson was that I should look in the mirror because Ive started plenty of confrontations.Well Im not saying I didnt. What I am saying is that its not something I rely on any more. Botham's Ashes tales fire up Buttler

CARDIFF (AFP) - Ian Botham may not appreciate the comparison but there was no doubt Jos Buttler was paying him a compliment when he said listening to the England heros tales of Ashes past was like storytime with your granddad.Botham, one of Englands greatest all-rounders, reserved many of his best performances for old enemy Australia.And such was his impact on the 1981 series it was labelled Bothams Ashes after several stunning individual displays with both bat and ball helped turn the series in Englands favour.Botham was invited to give the current England squad a pep talk ahead of the first Test against Australia in Cardiff starting on Wednesday and Buttler lapped up every word.It was great, said England wicketkeeper/batsman Buttler. It was like storytime with your granddad, really.Buttler, who at the age of 24 is not quite two generations removed from the 59-year-old Botham, added: Beefy -- everyone sat around listening to stories of the rockstar life he led.It was quite different the way he went about it as to our how our preparation has been.It seems the most pertinent piece of advice that Botham, who relished the big occasion, passed on was to enjoy all the hype that surrounds the Ashes without letting it affect your own game. He said you have to understand that is how it is -- but the cricket doesnt change, Buttler explained. You have to enjoy it, and embrace the Ashes.With England bidding to recover the Ashes after a 5-0 thrashing in Australia in 2013/14, the scale of the task ahead has enthused Buttler.You always dream of playing in this series that is always talked about, he said.Its going to be a huge challenge for me personally and the team -- but its something you want to be a part of, to test yourselves in these situations.But even if this season ends up being Buttlers Ashes, the kind of exploits that Botham used to enjoy mid-Test wont be an option for the present-day England team, given that rest days have long since been abolished.His (Bothams) favourite stories seem to involve rest days in Tests ... they seemed to be the best invention ever, said Buttler.

Starc promises 'no respite' for England

LONDON (AFP) - Mitchell Starc has told England there will be no let-up when they face Australias pace attack in the first Ashes Test in Cardiff on Wednesday.The left-arm fast bowler took nine wickets in Australias final warm-up match as they defeated county side Essex over the weekend and Starc is now set to be an increasingly important figure following the injury-enforced retirement of fellow-paceman Ryan Harris.But with Australias squad also including another left-arm fast bowler in Mitchell Johnson, as well as emerging right-arm seamer Josh Hazlewood, the 25-year-old Starc is looking forward to seeing Englands top-order batsmen unsettled by pace and movement.Having some guys who can bowl some good heat -- and we can swing it -- it is always good to see those batsmen jumping around and making life hard for them, said Starc, who had a brief spell with reigning English county champions Yorkshire during 2012.When you have a few guys who can consistently bowl over 140kph (87mph), that is great to have because there is no respite.We will have Mitch Johnson coming in, who has terrorised England in Australia, then Josh and I are following on and can hopefully both push it up a decent pace as well.Starc, Australias man of the tournament when they won this years World Cup, added he had increased his pace and that would help him combat the effect of unresponsive pitches.I have probably gained a yard or two but for me it is that consistency, which is what I was questioned about for a long time and tried to find, he said.There is that confidence in myself now that in a pretty dead, lifeless wicket I can produce consistently.Now over the last six months, it is really getting to the point where it needs to be in terms of being able to swing the ball for a while.It is all merging into one and I am starting to see results.Amid all the talk of sledging, Starc said he had little time for verbal spats with opposition players.I am not one to chirp the batsmen, I am just trying to concentrate on bowling and do my own thing, he said. 'Door open to discussions' on Greece: Hollande, Merkel

PARIS (AFP) - French President Francois Hollande and German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Monday the door was open for a return to debt negotiations with Greece, but called on Athens to make detailed proposals.The door is open to discussions and it is now up to the government of Alexis Tsipras to make serious, credible proposals so that this willingness to stay in the eurozone can translate into a lasting programme, Hollande said.I stress the fact that time is running out and there is urgency, urgency for Greece and urgency for Europe, he said after meeting Merkel in Paris a day after Greek voters rejected bailout proposals by international lenders.Merkel echoed Hollandes comments that the door was open to further talks to resolve the debt crisis, but said conditions for a new rescue package have not yet been met.And that is why we are now waiting for very precise proposals from the Greek prime minister, a programme that will allow Greece to return to prosperity, said Merkel.Ahead of a hastily-arranged eurozone meeting on Tuesday, Hollande said that while in Europe there is place for solidarity, there is also a balance between responsibility and solidarity which must be our course of action in the coming days.

CM Punjab, Finance Minister in action as traders threaten of strike

LAHORE: (Dunya News) – Chief Minister Punjab Shahbaz Sharif and Finance Minister Ishaq Dar are in action as traders threatened to go on strike over 0.6% tax on bank transactions. Shahbaz Sharif contacted Ishaq Dar, who called meeting of traders and Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) officials on Wednesday, reported Dunya News.Expressing concern over imposition of tax on bank transactions, traders had announced to protest on Tuesday in Lahore and various other cities of the country. CM Punjab contacted Ishaq Dar immediately and informed him about traders’ concerns.Ishaq Dar will meet a delegation of traders on Wednesday in Islamabad upon CM Punjab’s advice and the meeting will also be attended by FBR officials. Traders’ concerns will be sympathetically looked at in this meeting.

'Naya Pakistan' to be built by usurping people's rights: Pervaiz Rashid

Iran talks failure 'not ruled out': German source

VIENNA (AFP) - Talks seeking a landmark nuclear deal between Iran and major powers may yet fail, a German diplomatic source said Monday during a break in negotiations in Vienna on the eve of a deadline.We are not there yet... We should not underestimate that important questions remain unresolved. There will not be an agreement at any price. If there is no movement in decisive areas a failure is not ruled out, the source said.The comments came after a day of talks between the foreign ministers of Iran and six major powers -- the United States, Russia, China, Britain, Germany and France -- in the Austrian capital.They are seeking an accord that ends a 13-year-old standoff over Irans nuclear programme by scaling down its activities in return for relief from painful sanctions.Last week an earlier deadline was effectively extended by seven days to July 7 by extending the terms of an interim deal from November 2013.But on Monday an Iranian official suggested that his delegation had never really considered Tuesday as a deadline.July 7, July 8, we do not consider these dates as those dates we have to finish our job, the official, who asked not to be named, told reporters.
