Obama, Saudi King discuss 'urgency' of stopping Yemen fighting

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - US President Barack Obama and Saudi Arabias King Salman on Tuesday discussed the urgent need to end fighting in Yemen, hours after Saudi-backed loyalists retook control of Aden airport. After discussion about a recently inked nuclear deal with Iran, the White House said Obama and Salman also spoke about the urgency of stopping the fighting in Yemen and the importance of ensuring that assistance can reach Yemenis on all sides of the conflict. The White House has repeatedly pressed for an end to the conflict in which Saudi Arabia has led a coalition air and naval campaign south of its border. It has also called for talks to end the crisis.Leading Sunni power Saudi Arabia has been deeply concerned about Iranian influence in its impoverished southern neighbor.Riyadh launched a devastating air campaign in March against the rebels and their allies in the armed forces.Aden airport had been in the hands of the rebels since soldiers of the 39th Armored Brigade defected on March 25.The fighting has raged despite a UN-declared six-day ceasefire that was supposed to have taken effect shortly before midnight Friday.

Iranians celebrate nuclear deal, hail Zarif as hero

Posted:

TEHRAN (AFP) - The crowd was small at first but as the din of car horns grew louder so did the number of Iranians celebrating a long-awaited nuclear deal in Tehran late Tuesday. Some said they hoped it would improve their lives and change Irans image abroad. Others simply wanted to express their gratitude.Thank you Mr Zarif, said Parvaneh Farvadi, among the hundreds who assembled at Parkway, a busy intersection in the north of the capital, shortly after sundown. Her admiration was not confined to Irans Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, whose name rang out in song.I love John Kerry, the 32-year-old said of the US Secretary of State who for almost two years has faced Zarif at the forefront of nuclear talks which culminated in Tuesdays historic deal.We are so happy. The diplomacy worked, Farvadi added, as people placed Iranian flags atop their car windscreens and others held balloons out of the windows. Some people even danced.Several drivers also carried a large wooden key -- the symbol of President Hassan Rouhanis successful election campaign two years ago, after which a nuclear deal became his dominant aim.As a candidate Rouhani said the key stood for prudence and hope, and pledged the nuclear crisis could be solved and economic prosperity restored after nearly a decade of international sanctions. At Parkway, most people evoked the same wish of better times, recounting a turbulent period, including recession and high inflation in which the nuclear dispute defined Irans image abroad. If you look at the street tonight its because were happy, said Giti, 42, who returned to Iran three years ago having lived in Canada and the United States and was again considering a move abroad. The nuclear deal may change her mind. Maybe the economy is going to change, especially for the young people. I was thinking about leaving, but now I will stay to see what happens, said the computer programmer.I could never have imagined this, even two years ago, she added. While some in the crowd chanted Iran, Iran, Iran several groups of young students hailed Zarif in the same breath as Mohammad Mossadegh, the democratically elected premier overthrown in a US-British coup in 1953.Mossadegh, Zarif, Mossadegh, Zarif, these are the heroes of Iran, they sang with flags draped across their shoulders as the road started to clog up with cars and people dodged the traffic.Mossadegh, who was toppled after nationalising the nations oil industry, is regarded as one of Irans greatest sons.Other celebrations took place across the capital, official media said, with pictures and video of the revelry posted on social media.Condolences Israel and Kayhan, people chanted at Vanak Square, referring to the biggest international opponent of a nuclear deal and a hardline Iranian newspaper that also railed against the diplomacy of the past two years.Authorities appeared apprehensive earlier this week about people celebrating the same way they did after a preliminary deal was agreed with world powers on April 2.Warnings from some officials may have been heeded as while there were several celebrations the numbers looked to be in the hundreds rather than the thousands, observers said.In the first hour at Parkway there was no police presence, but social media posts later said officers had arrived to exercise some control. When news of the deal first came through around noon in Tehran, where the temperature hit 39 degrees Celsius (102 Fahrenheit), there was relief and enthusiasm. Its great news because the economy will boom, said accountant Behnam Arian at Argentine Square, a busy commercial district in the capital.Hamid Bahri, an engineer, was happy the talks were finally over after 18 days of waiting for a breakthrough in Vienna.Any deal is better than no deal, he said.Such optimism was not universal. This deal will have no effect on the economic development and daily lives of Iranians, said Abtin Afarinsh, who sells luxury leather goods.Shrugging his shoulders, he added: Im not going to be fooled by this.

Saudi hopes Iran ends 'interference' after nuclear deal

Posted:

RIYADH (AFP) - Saudi Arabia expressed hope Tuesday for an end to Irans regional interference after a historic nuclear deal aimed at ensuring its Middle East rival does not obtain an atomic bomb. Two of the kingdoms fellow Sunni-run Gulf neighbours also expressed hope for better relations with Shiite-dominated Iran.Given that Iran is a neighbour, Saudi Arabia hopes to build with her better relations in all areas on the basis of good neighbourliness and non-interference in internal affairs, said an official spokesman cited by the Saudi Press Agency.Iran should, with the conclusion of this accord, put her resources towards its development and amelioration of the condition of the Iranian people instead of provoking troubles which would generate certain reactions from countries in the region. The Gulf states, led by Saudi Arabia, the worlds top oil exporter, have concerns that Iran could still be able to develop a weapon under the agreement between Tehran and six major powers. They also worry that their traditional defence partner, Washington, is not taking seriously enough their concerns about what they consider Irans destabilising acts in Yemen and elsewhere in the Middle East. The Vienna agreement puts strict limits on Irans nuclear activities for at least a decade and calls for stringent UN oversight. In return, painful international sanctions that have slashed Irans oil exports and choked its economy will be lifted and billions of dollars in frozen assets unblocked. To counter Iran, Saudi Arabia is pursuing its own nuclear projects and building alliances beyond its ties with Washington.A United Arab Emirates official said his country hoped to see a new direction accompany the nuclear pact reached in Vienna to end a 13-year standoff over Tehrans nuclear ambitions.Iran could play a (significant) role in the region if it revises its policy and stops interfering in the internal affairs of countries like Iraq, Syria, Lebanon and Yemen, the official said. The new direction we hope to see accompany the historic nuclear deal would demonstrate a genuine desire for Iran to help extinguish fires devouring the region, the official said. This would move the region away from the discord of sectarianism, extremism and terrorism. The UAE, like all other Gulf states except Oman, belongs to a Saudi-led coalition that has been bombing Iran-backed rebels in Yemen since March.Abu Dhabi also fears that the Vienna agreement will strengthen Iranian influence in the region.A change of path by Tehran would send a positive signal that would help the region avoid nuclear proliferation and all the risks this would involve for its security and stability, the Emirati official said.Without such a change, we cannot build anything positive, and this will have consequences on the region and its people. The official WAM news agency said UAE leaders have congratulated Rouhani, saying they hope the Vienna accord will strengthen security and stability in the region.Kuwaits emir, Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Sabah, sent cables to Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and Rouhani congratulating them on the historic agreement. He hoped the deal would contribute to strengthen peace and stability in the region and to direct all efforts for the development of the countries in the area.

Car bomb kills at least 5 in Iraq town of Khalis

BAGHDAD (AFP) - A car bomb blast claimed by the Islamic State jihadist group killed at least five people in the Iraqi town of Khalis on Tuesday, officials said. The blast, which the top provincial official in Khalis said occurred outside a reputed local doctors house, also left at least 11 wounded. The IS group said in a claim posted on jihadist forums that the explosion targeted members of Hashed al-Shaabi, an umbrella organisation for mostly Shiite militias which has been playing a leading role in the anti-IS fightback.Khalis lies around 60 kilometres (35 miles) north of Baghdad in Diyala, a province which the government declared free of IS militants in January. The jihadists no longer have fixed positions there but have reverted to their old tactics of planting car bombs, carrying out suicide operations or hit-and-run attacks.

Oil prices finish higher after Iran deal

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Oil prices rose Tuesday as markets weighed the effects of Irans deal with six world powers on curbing the Islamic republics suspected ambitions for a nuclear bomb.US benchmark West Texas Intermediate for August delivery gained 84 cents at $53.04 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.European benchmark Brent oil for August delivery added 66 cents at $58.51 a barrel in London. I think people had already sold down the price of oil, expecting an agreement, said Michael Lynch, an analyst with the US-based consultancy Strategic Energy & Economic Research. So its a case of selling on the rumour and buying on the news. Now that its actually happened, people are buying back in, Lynch said.Analysts said the landmark agreement that will see sanctions eventually lifted on Irans oil exports would help to put a lid on any rise in crude futures this year and in the future. To be clear, the return of Iranian oil exports over the next year is one factor likely to keep oil prices low, said Thomas Pugh, commodities economist at consultants Capital Economics.Major powers -- Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia and the United States -- clinched a historic deal Tuesday aimed at ensuring Iran does not obtain the nuclear bomb, opening up Tehrans stricken economy and potentially ending decades of bad blood with the West.Reached on day 18 of marathon talks in Vienna, the accord is aimed at resolving a 13-year standoff over Irans nuclear ambitions after repeated diplomatic failures and threats of military action. The deal puts strict limits on Irans nuclear activities for at least a decade and calls for stringent UN oversight, with world powers hoping that this will make any dash to make an atomic bomb virtually impossible. In return, painful international sanctions that have slashed the oil exports of OPECs fifth-largest producer and choked its economy will be lifted and billions of dollars in frozen assets unblocked. However, analysts cautioned that it will take time for additional Iranian oil to hit markets.Iranian crude oil production is likely to increase in 2016 but will take a number of years to reach its previous peak, Fitch Ratings said in a client note on Tuesday.Irans oil exports at the moment are around 1.1 million barrels per day versus levels of around 2.5 million before 2012, it noted. The ratings agency added: We would expect to see some increases in production throughout the course of 2016 but that this would be less than half of the full 1.4 million barrels daily that was lost. The remainder will require significant investment and expertise, for which Iran is likely to want to partner with international oil companies.A spokesperson for Royal Dutch Shell said the energy giant is interested in exploring the role Shell can play in developing Irans energy potential.BP added in a statement: We are watching the situation and in the meantime we continue to comply with sanctions. We will look at opportunities once able to do so.Looking ahead, the extent of the impact on oil prices will depend primarily on the domestic capability to get oil on the market, said Nina Skero, economist at the Centre for Economics and Business Research. We expect Brent crude to... trade around $60 per barrel for the remainder of the year, she added.World oil prices collapsed by 60 percent between June 2014 and January when it hit a low of $45. This in part was owing to excessive supplies caused by the boom in US shale oil. While OPEC on Monday revised upward its forecast for global crude oil demand growth for this year, it warned that crude output would also continue to increase.Irans OPEC peers Saudi Arabia and Iraq have both significantly ramped up production this year, noted Richard Mallinson, analyst at research group Energy Aspects. There is little chance that these countries, and other OPEC members, are going to reduce output to make space for a return of Iranian production, he told AFP.

Dollar edges lower after poor data signal rate hike delay

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - The dollar fell slightly on Tuesday after disappointing data on American consumer spending suggested the Federal Reserve may delay an interest rate hike.US retail sales fell broadly in June, by 0.3 percent, the Commerce Department reported, instead of the 0.3 percent increase expected by analysts. The dollar slipped anew after data showed American consumers unexpectedly turned fragile last month, clouding forecasts for a solid second-quarter rebound, said Joe Manimbo, senior market analyst at Western Union Business Solutions. The weak report came on the eve of Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellens twice-yearly testimony to Congress on monetary policy and the state of the worlds largest economy.Investors are expected to scour Yellens remarks, to the House of Representatives Financial Services Committee on Tuesday, for insight into the Feds thinking on its plan to raise its zero-level federal funds rate this year.In recent months some analysts have pushed the expectations for a hike from September to December, and beyond.Any signs of slower growth could easily dissuade the Fed from hiking interest rates later this year, pushing the first rate rise into 2016, said Chris Williamson, chief economist at Markit. The euro, meanwhile, held relatively steady as traders awaited the Greek parliaments decision on tough bailout terms demanded by the other 18 eurozone countries. Under the deal struck Monday, the parliament must approve the reforms by Wednesday for negotiations to proceed on a crucial three-year bailout deal to save the country from default.

Pakistan, Sri Lanka 2nd ODI today

Posted:

PALLEKELE (Agencies) - Sri Lanka will take on Pakistan in the second One-Day International (ODI) at Pallekele on Wednesday. The visitors pulled off a convincing win in the first match of the series thanks to a memorable all-round performance from Mohammad Hafeez, who took four wickets and scored an excellent century as well.Sri Lanka are yet to come to terms with the retirement of their two stalwarts Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene. Their batting looks brittle at best, with only Tillakaratne Dilshan and Angelo Mathews providing any sort of stability. Dinesh Chandimal and Lahiru Thirimanne have proved their mettle in the past, but still lack the consistency to be counted as threats by the opposition. Where Sri Lanka can take comfort is their bowling. Lasith Malinga might not be the maverick he was prior to his injury but he remains a canny operator. Dhammika Prasad, Suranga Lakmal, and Nuwan Pradeep provide powerful pace backup. As for Pakistan, the appointment of Azhar Ali as captain may have been baffling at first, but he is slowly showing that the decision did indeed have some merit. His batting has been a revelation, and he has led with a calm head in tune with the way Misbah-ul-Haq led the side. Hafeez’s form in the previous match bodes well for Pakistan, though Ahmed Shehzad‘s poor form has lasted a bit too long for everyone’s comfort.Neither team is likely to make too many changes just one match into the series, though Sri Lanka could certainly consider bringing in some of their other pacers after the lacklustre bowling performance in the last match. The extra speed of Pradeep could be useful to a team that is lacking firepower. On the whole, the contest is evenly poised going into the match. Pakistan desperately need to win every match to qualify for the ICC Champions Trophy 2017, and Sri Lanka will want to use that added pressure to their advantage. But Pakistan are capable of a lot when their backs are to the wall; it is that unpredictability that will add a bit of zing to the contest.Squads:Sri Lanka: Angelo Mathews (c), Dinesh Chandimal (wk), Tillakaratne Dilshan, Kusal Perera, Upul Tharanga, Lahiru Thirimanne, Milinda Siriwardana, Ashan Priyanjan, Nuwan Pradeep, Thisara Perera, Suranga Lakmal, Lasith Malinga, Sachithra Senanayake, Seekuge Prasanna, Sachith Pathiran.Pakistan: Azhar Ali (c), Mukhtar Ahmed, Ahmed Shehzad, Mohammad Hafeez, Asad Shafiq, Shoaib Malik, Mohammad Rizwan, Babar Azam, Sarfraz Ahmed (wk), Yasir Shah, Bilal Asif, Immad Wasim, Anwar Ali, Mohammad Irfan, Ehsan Adil, Rahat Ali.

Stokes accepts all-round burden

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - England all-rounder Ben Stokes has said he understands why hes been compared to Ian Botham and Andrew Flintoff but stressed he is determined to make his own mark in international cricket.Botham re-shaped the 1981 Ashes in Englands favour with both bat and ball while Flintoff was the hero of Englands 2005 success against Australia with a series of impressive all-round displays.Stokes, another big-hitting and lively pace bowling all-rounder, has been tipped to fill the Flintoff role by current England captain Alastair Cook in this seasons Ashes. But as England head into Thursdays second Test at Lords on Thursday with a 1-0 lead following their emphatic 169-run win in Cardiff last weekend, the 24-year-old Stokes was clear about how he saw his England future.Im Ben Stokes; Im not Flintoff, or (Ian) Botham, he said.Being an all-rounder, youre probably going to get compared to the Bothams and the Flintoffs -- as I have done recently, said the Durham man, who provided one of the rare England highlights during their 5-0 Ashes thrashing in Australia in 2013/14 with a defiant maiden Test hundred in Perth. Im not looking to emulate them. Im just going to go about my cricket in the way I want to do it, declared Stokes, who did exactly that by scoring the fastest Test hundred ever seen at Lords last month with a breathtaking century against New Zealand.People can say it is extra pressure, but I do not find there is any extra on me, he said.I am just going to go out there and try to perform. If I dont, then there will be someone else knocking on the door trying to take my place. So now I have got this stable position in the team, I want to keep it.For Stokes, Englands victory in Cardiff -- completed with more than a day to spare -- was especially sweet following their Ashes humiliation in Australia. When Rooty (Joe Root) caught the catch at the end (in Cardiff), it was like revenge.New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum accused Australias David Warner and Nathan Lyon of petulance in trying to delay Stokess unusual habit of circling the top-end of his bat in the crease between overs although the England man simply bided his time in the end before going through with the distinctive routine. That was pretty silly, I thought, really, said Stokes.Rooty said that if theyre trying to do that, they must be thinking were on top.So if theyre going to do that for the rest of the series then fair enough.I just said You can stand there all day because Im not moving until you move. If you want to get your captains over rate down then so be it.

Faulkner banned over drink-driving charge

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - World Cup winner James Faulkner will miss Australias limited overs matches againt England and Ireland after Cricket Australia (CA) banned the all-rounder for drink-driving.The 25-year-old faces a court hearing in Manchester next week after being charged with drink-driving by Greater Manchester Police while playing for English county side Lancashire.CA said Faulkner had been punished for conduct that is unbecoming of a representative and that is or could be harmful to the interests of cricket. His suspension covers the matches against Ireland on August 27, and England on August 31, September 3 and September 5.A CA statement confirmed: Given he will be unavailable for a significant component of that series, Faulkner will not be considered for the Australian T20 or one-day international squads when announced in mid-August.Faulkner may be considered as a replacement for an injured player following his suspension if required. The player will have to undergo an alcohol management counselling programme, the statement added, and has picked up a formal reprimand.CA performance director Pat Howard said: James has acknowledged the seriousness of his actions and has accepted the penalties handed down today. He has cooperated fully with the disciplinary procedure and is deeply remorseful. We have reminded James that his actions had serious potential to cause harm to him and others. Aside from the suspension handed down, he has been formally reprimanded for his behaviour. In saying that, we do acknowledge that James has been a player with a good track record and we would like to think that this episode is very much out of character.Faulkner, who is out on bail, will appear in court on July 21.

Dropped catch costs Zimbabwe as India claim series whitewash

Posted:

HARARE (AFP) - Kedar Jadhav made Zimbabwe pay for a woeful dropped catch as his unbeaten century powered India to an 83-run victory in the third one-day international at Harare Sports Club on Tuesday and a series whitewash.Jadhav was on 41 when Elton Chigumbura put down the simplest of chances off the bowling of Graeme Cremer, and the Indian batsman went on to score his maiden ton in just his fourth ODI as India posted 276 for five after being put in to bat.The feat gave Indian cricket something to cheer about on the day that two Indian Premier League franchises were suspended for two years and two officials were banned for life for their part in the 2013 fixing scandal. While Jadhav finished on 105 not out from 87 balls, Manish Pandey also provided a good news story as he made 71 on his long-awaited international debut - the fourth-highest score by an Indian debutant in ODIs.The pair allowed India to recover from the precarious position of 82 for four as they shared in a 144-run stand for the fifth wicket. It was good that Manish was going nicely so it gave me some time to adjust to the wicket. Later on when I got set I played some shots, said Jadhav.I told myself that whenever I get going, I will stay to the last and make sure that my team wins. Im happy to have done that today.Pandeys 86-ball knock came to an end when he holed out to long-on, but Jadhav helped India add 50 runs in the last 19 balls of the innings and in the process reached his century off 86 deliveries. As he had in the second ODI, Chamu Chibhabha provided the sole bright spot in Zimbabwes reply, scoring 82 as the hosts were bowled out for 193 in 42.4 overs. The next highest score for Zimbabwe was Regis Chakabvas 27, as Stuart Binny swung the ball viciously on his way to figures of 3 for 55 in 10 overs.Mohit Sharma, Harbhajan Singh and Axar Patel provided excellent back-up and each took two wickets, leaving the Zimbabweans to reflect on a ninth straight defeat in completed ODIs.We are looking to improve, so please bear with us, coach Dav Whatmore said. We are trying really hard to get it right and we will need a bit more time. The two teams will now take part in a two-match Twenty20 series that starts at the same ground on Friday.

UK wants to review Tunisia travel warning: envoy

Posted:

TUNIS (AFP) - Britain wants to review its travel advisory on Tunisia as soon as possible, after urging its tourists to leave over fears of another deadly attack, Londons ambassador said Tuesday. After a jihadist murdered 38 tourists -- including 30 Britons -- at a beach resort north of Sousse on June 26, British Prime Minister David Cameron spoke to his Tunisian counterpart Habib Essid.Cameron clearly said that we want to review this advice to travellers as soon as possible, Ambassador Hamish Cowell told privately run Shems FM radio. For that reason, we are working closely with the Tunisian authorities on implementing all the necessary security measures. They have already made a great effort and we are seeing with these authorities what can be done to review this advice, Cowell added. On Thursday, the foreign office in London changed its travel advice for Tunisia to advise against all but essential travel. It put this decision down to the evolving security situation since the attack.Cowell said the Foreign Office decision had not been hasty... Rather an objective and thorough assessment of the state of the threat. It was found that there is a high threat, especially to foreigners. The Tunisian government said it regretted the decision but at the same time understood it because of the terrorist threat.Essid said Tunisia had done everything possible to protect foreign interests.Cowell told Shems FM many security issues were being explored, including protection measures in tourist areas and controlling the border with Libya. After the attack, Tunis said it was deploying another 1,000 members of the security forces in tourist areas.Cowell said London has made an assessment of additional security measures that will be needed in this new situation. After reactions, especially in the media, attributing Britains decision to disagreements over the investigation, Cowell insisted that cooperation between London and Tunis was very good.We have a police team here to work with the Tunisian police on the investigation, and its going very well with excellent cooperation between them, he said. There is a great mobilisation now in London and elsewhere to help Tunisia, in both security and economic matters, Cowell added.Last months attack at the Riu Imperial Marhaba Hotel in Port El Kantaoui was the worst in the history of Tunisia and a heavy blow to its tourism, already affected by the instability that followed the 2011 revolution.

Cricket: Australia's Haddin out of second Ashes Test

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Australia wicketkeeper Brad Haddin will miss the second Ashes Test against England at Lords starting on Thursday for family reasons, team management announced Tuesday. His place in the side will be taken by reserve gloveman Peter Nevill, also Haddins New South Wales deputy, who will be making his international debut.I can confirm that Brad Haddin has withdrawn himself from the second Test at Lords for family reasons, said an Australia team spokeswoman. He will remain with the team in London and we wont be making any further comment.Peter Nevill will replace him in the side. The 37-year-old Haddin took little part in Australias training session at Lords on Tuesday. His decision to withdraw from the second Test is not the first time Haddin has put his family ahead of his cricket career. In 2012, Haddin took nearly a year out of the game after his then 17-month-old daughter Mia was diagnosed with neuroblastoma -- a rare form of cancer that attacks children aged five years or younger. As his daughters condition improved, Haddin returned to international cricket during Australias losing 2013 Ashes tour of England.Meanwhile the 29-year-old Nevill faces the prospect of making his Test debut at Lords. All the history associated with the home of cricket can either inspire or over-awe players. But for wicket-keepers there is a more practical problem because of the way the ball can deviate alarmingly at Lords after passing the bat.Haddin was not at his best during Englands 169-run win in the first Test, dropping Joe Root on nought before the Yorkshireman made 134.The Australia wicket-keeper had an outstanding series during a 5-0 Ashes rout of England in 2013/14, with five fifties -- including a top score of 118.Before Haddins absence from the match was confirmed, Australia fast-medium bowler Peter Siddle said Tuesday that Nevill would be ready to take his Test chance if selected at Lords.Hes played well in the opportunities hes had, Siddle said of Nevill. His record back home speaks for itself.Hes had a couple of great years in first-class cricket, Siddle also told a news conference at Lords.I played a lot with him as a youngster, being a Victorian boy. He moved away (to New South Wales) to get an opportunity and he obviously has taken that.No doubt if its this Test or down in the future, he gets his opportunity, Ive got no doubt he will be ready to go, he added.Nevill, 29, has a first-class batting average in excess of 44.I can always learn a lot from Hadds, but this tour Ive got to prepare to play, said Nevill before Australias warm-up match against Essex in Chelmsford.I need to be on top of my game and ready to go should that opportunity arise.Nevill also said he would call upon the vast knowledge of on-tour selector Rodney Marsh, one of Australias greatest wicket-keepers and someone who made his first Test tour of England 43 years ago.Im sure hes gong to have plenty of feedback for me, Nevill said of Marsh. He had a wonderful career as a wicketkeeper-batsman for Australia, so hes definitely a great resource.Ill be making sure I sidle up to him and have a good chat about those things, he added.

US teen hikes to freedom after plane crash

Posted:

LOS ANGELES (AFP) - A teenage girl survived a plane crash and then used knowledge picked up from watching survival shows on television to hike for two days out of the wilderness, US media and her parents said.Autumn Veatch, 16, was in hospital after the small plane she was traveling in with her step-grandparents Saturday plunged into the Cascade Mountain range in Washington state, The Seattle Times reported.Reported missing and feared dead, Veatch tried to pull her step-grandparents from the plane and when that failed followed a river to a road, before making her way to a nearby store, the paper said.We crashed and I was the only one that made it out... the only one that survived, she told a 911 emergency dispatcher, adding: I have a lot of burns on my hands and Im... covered in bruises and scratches and stuff. Her father David Veatch told reporters: She watches a lot of survival shows with me... I think she did good.Veatch had had nothing to eat or drink for several days, a first responder told the newspaper. She was hospitalized on Monday in the Washington town of Brewster, but has no serious injuries.Crews are still searching for the plane, The Seattle Times reported, and authorities have not confirmed the fate of the step-grandparents or said what may have caused the crash as they flew to Montana.Rick LeDuc, the owner of the store, said Veatch told them she only remembered flying through clouds and then there was an impact. She related that she had been in an accident and had spent the last two days walking basically down a creek that turned into a larger creek... and came across a trailhead, found Highway 20 and then waited for somebody to pick her up, he told Komo 4 News.He said the teenager was clearly rattled and shaken by the experience. She hadnt eaten for two days. There have been some pretty incredible stories in the Cascades, but this one would definitely rank right up there.

94% Pakistanis disapprove of Altaf Hussain's criticism on army: Survey

'Money is not justice,' says family in NY police death

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - The family of a black father of six who died after being held in an illegal police chokehold urged the federal government to take up the case Tuesday, after reaching a $5.9 million settlement.Eric Garners death in July 2014 was the first in a year of high-profile, racially-charged incidents in which white officers have been accused of using unreasonable force or being too quick to fire at black suspects. The deaths have fueled nationwide protests, bitter debate about racism and demands for structural reforms to police practices. The city of New York announced a settlement with the Garners on Monday, nine months after the family took steps towards seeking $75 million in damages.Garners loved ones and civil rights campaigner Al Sharpton urged the US federal government at a news conference to take up the case and to hold the white police officers accountable for his death. This does not represent justice. We call on the Department of Justice and (US Attorney General) Loretta Lynch to deliver justice for my father, said daughter Erica Garner.Justice is indictments and a fair trial.Garners family and Sharpton also called on supporters to join them in a public rally in New York on Saturday to commemorate the first anniversary of Garners death and to campaign for justice. They treated my husband like an animal, widow Esaw Garner said. I think they need to do something about that asap, because were losing our family members. The 43-year-old was wrestled to the ground for allegedly selling illegal cigarettes on New Yorks Staten Island.Graphic cell phone footage, which went viral, showed the heavily built Garner, who had asthma, complaining I cant breathe 11 times. He lost consciousness at the scene and was pronounced dead after being taken to the hospital. Chokeholds are outlawed by New York police.- About justice -The protest movement will not end until policing practices are structurally changed with federal intervention, Sharpton said.It is about justice, Sharpton added. You will never be able to fill the void of a life taken with money.New York comptroller Scott Stringer said the settlement was not an admission of liability, but in the best interests of all parties. The medical examiners office classified Garners death as a homicide but a grand jury refused to prosecute the white officer who deployed the fatal chokehold. The family had sought damages for negligence, recklessness and carelessness, naming eight officers, the city and the New York police department.New York has since begun a pilot program equipping police officers with body cameras to record their behavior towards the public.Garners death set off numerous protests in New York and elsewhere, magnified by the August 9, 2014 police shooting of unarmed black teenager Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri.
