Five Saudi troops die on Yemen border: coalition

Posted:

RIYADH (AFP) - Five Saudi soldiers have died on the border with Yemen, the Saudi-led coalition said late on Sunday as forces inside Yemen began a major offensive against rebels.A coalition statement did not say how the army soldier and four Border Guard troops died in the kingdoms southern Najran region.Neither did it specify the date of the incident. The statement, carried by the official Saudi Press Agency, said they died in the line of duty while protecting the nations borders. It appeared to be the largest single military loss in the border region announced by the coalition since March 26, when it began action in Yemen against Iran-backed Huthi rebels. However, unlike most announcements of Saudi military casualties in the border zone, the statement gave no details. In June the coalition said four Saudis and dozens of Yemenis were killed in battle when forces loyal to Yemens former president attacked several locations on the Saudi border.Months of coalition air strikes failed to dislodge the Huthis from territory they had seized in Yemen. But they began to lose ground in July when the coalition, according to military sources, sent in armour, troops and Yemeni fighters trained in Saudi Arabia. On Sunday coalition-supported anti-rebel forces in Yemen began a major offensive aimed at pushing the Huthis out of Marib province and eventually moving on the capital Sanaa which the Huthis seized last year.Riyadh formed the Arab alliance, in support of exiled President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi, in response to fears that the Huthis would take over all of Yemen and move it into the orbit of Sunni Saudi Arabias Shiite regional rival Iran.At least 60 people have been killed in Saudi Arabia from shelling and skirmishes along the frontier with Yemen since the coalition campaign began. Most of the border casualties have been soldiers.Another 10 Saudi troops died inside Yemen earlier this month. They were among 60 coalition soldiers killed when a missile hit their base in Marib province. The World Health Organization says more than 4,500 people, including a vast number of civilians, have been killed in Yemen since March 19.

Babies and children among 34 dead in Aegean migrant boat sinking

ATHENS (AFP) - At least 34 people, including 15 babies and children, drowned when their overcrowded boat capsized in high winds off a Greek island on Sunday, the latest migrant tragedy at sea.The new deaths came as Athens angrily defended its handling of the mounting refugee crisis in Europe and appealed for more help. Four babies and 11 young children -- six boys and five girls -- were among those on the stricken wooden boat when it sank off the island of Farmakonisi. Eight of the victims were found by coastguard frogmen in the hold of the boat. A total of 34 people were found dead, while another 68 were plucked alive from the sea and a further 30 managed to swim to safety on a beach on the island, according to latest coastguard figures. The exact number of those aboard remains unknown but the ANA said the boat was overcrowded and went down because of high winds in the area.A Greek navy ship was taking the bodies to Rhodes while the survivors were being transported to Leros. The coastguard was also still searching on Sunday for four children missing after another boat capsized on Saturday off Samos, a Greek island just off the Turkish coast. The latest tragedies follow the death of a Syrian toddler whose lifeless body was photographed washed up on a Turkish beach last week, becoming a heartwrenching symbol of the plight of refugees fleeing war.The International Organisation for Migration has said more than 430,000 migrants and refugees had crossed the Mediterranean to Europe so far in 2015, with 2,748 dying or going missing en route.Interim Prime Minister Vassiliki Thanou on Sunday branded criticism of Greece, which has been on the frontline of the surge of migrants trying to reach Europe, as unacceptable.Greece is strictly applying European and international treaties without ignoring the humanity of the situation, she said on a visit to Lesbos, an island which has been struggling with the massive influx.German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Saturday called on Athens, already grappling with a deep economic crisis, to make more effort to protect the EUs external borders. We have a second external border, thats between Greece and Turkey, where we need protection. And this protection is at the moment not being guaranteed, she said.Greece needs to take its responsibility... we will also speak with Turkey. But Greeces leftist Syriza party, bidding for reelection in next Sundays vote, called for external help in dealing with the crisis. We should mourn but also act, it said in a statement, describing the massive influx of refugees as a wider European and global problem. Our country is, because of its geographic position, a gateway and it needs support, funds and infrastructure in order to help these desperate people, as it must do.Marine Minister Christos Zois also issued a statement to highlight the daily superhuman struggle of the Greek costguard to save thousands of people, victims of human smugglers.

At least seven dead in twin suicide attack in Cameroon: army

Posted:

YAOUNDE (AFP) - Two suicide bombers killed at least seven people Sunday in twin attacks in northern Cameroon, an army official said, in an area near the border with Nigeria that has often been targeted by Boko Haram militants.According to initial information, nine people have died and 20 were injured, the official said, giving a toll that included the bombers. The attacks in the far northern town of Kolofata brought to nine the number of suicide bombings in the area since July, which have killed about 100 people in total. On September 3, the nearby town of Kerawa was hit by two suicide attacks that killed at least 20 people. In Sundays attack, two suicide bombers who were headed toward the town market detonated their suicide vests after being confronted by members of a local vigilante group, the army source told AFP on condition of anonymity. Cameroon is part of a five-nation force set up to fight Boko Haram alongside Nigeria, Chad, Niger and Benin.Cameroons far north region bordering Nigeria and Chad for the past two years has been targeted by a rising number of Boko Haram raids, kidnappings and, more recently, suicide attacks. Boko Haram has stepped up its bloody attacks in recent months after a regional military coalition inflicted heavy losses on the group. Cameroonian authorities have been trying to crack down on the risk of attacks by banning full Islamic face veils in public as well as stepping up searches and arrests.

California declares state of emergency as wildfires rage

Posted:

LOS ANGELES (AFP) - The governor of California declared a state of emergency Sunday as raging wildfires spread in the northern part of the drought-ridden US state, forcing thousands to flee the flames.Twelve blazes are currently burning but two -- one about 100 miles (160 kilometers) west of the state capital of Sacramento and one about 100 miles to the east -- have been particularly damaging over the last week, destroying hundreds of homes and mobilizing thousands of firefighters. Driven by high winds and soaring temperatures, the Butte Fire has burned 65,000 acres (26,000 hectares) and was just 20 percent contained while the Valley Fire had grown to 40,000 acres overnight and was zero percent contained, state fire agency CAL FIRE said.Governor Edmund Brown today issued an emergency proclamation for Lake and Napa counties due to the effects of the Valley Fire, which has burned thousands of acres of land and caused the evacuation of residents and damage to highways and other infrastructure, a statement said. The town of Middletown, population 1,300, was particularly devastated by the Valley Fire, according to local daily Santa Rosa Press-Democrat, which said the fire grew from 50 acres to 10,000 over just five hours Saturday -- before quadrupling in size overnight.Im looking in all directions, and all I see is fire, local fire chief Steve Baxman told the paper.Nearly 1,000 firefighters have been called in to combat the fast-moving blaze, which was tearing through oak-and-grass hillsides dried out from a fourth year of drought.CAL FIRE said four of those firefighters suffered second-degree burns while battling the blaze and 5,000 homes were without power.Throughout Saturday night and Sunday morning, new evacuation orders were issued for nearby communities, including all the way south to the border of the town of Calistoga, at the northern edge of the Napa Valley wine region.Thousands of residents have been evacuated from this fire, CAL FIRE spokesman Daniel Berlant told AFP. The Red Cross has opened emergency shelters to provide evacuated residents a place to go.In a tweet, Berlant said crews have not had a chance to do a full damage assessment on the Valley Fire but we know 100s of structures have been destroyed. On the other side of Californias Central Valley, the Butte Fire has drawn more than 4,000 firefighters to the Sierra Nevada foothills since Wednesday. More than 80 homes have been destroyed there and some 6,400 other structures are threatened, Berlant told AFP.Statewide, nearly 150,000 have been burned in fires under CAL FIREs jurisdiction, almost twice the five-year average, making this possibly the most costly wildfire season on record.Berlant told AFP that CAL FIRE has so far spent more than $212 million, just since July 1, and that approximately 5,000 firefighters are currently assigned to major wildfires. The costs of containing other fires, such as those currently burning in Sierra Nevada forests, are largely covered by federal agencies and not included in those figures. The US Forest Service has spent an additional $1.31 billion battling fires and says it is approaching its record, from 2002, of $1.65 billion in firefighting costs. The state of emergency Brown has declared for the regions affected by the Valley and Butte fires will release additional funds to cover the costs of the firefighting efforts.National Guard troops have also been called in to aid in those efforts. The fires have also impacted the states air quality. As a result of the Valley Fire, combined with the drought conditions and other wildfires burning in the state, Californias air quality has significantly deteriorated, the governor said in his emergency declaration.

Saudi air force pilot dies in helicopter crash

Posted:

RIYADH (AFP) - Saudi Arabias military blamed a technical error for a helicopter crash that killed a pilot during a training mission on Sunday. The air force machine went down in the Taif area, more than 800 kilometres (500 miles) from the border with Yemen.A defence ministry statement said the pilot was on a routine training trip.Since March 26, a Saudi-led Arab air coalition has been bombing Iran-backed Huthi rebels in Yemen, while also assisting local anti-rebel forces on the ground.Coalition helicopters have joined the fight. In late August, two pilots died when a coalition Apache gunship crashed in Saudi Arabias Jazan district along the border.Huthi rebels said they had shot down an Apache in the same region. On Sunday, anti-rebel forces in Yemen began a major offensive aimed at pushing the Huthis out of Marib province and eventually moving on the capital Sanaa which the Huthis seized last year.

Bayliss vexed over Cook partner on UAE Tour

Posted:

MANCHESTER (AFP) - England coach Trevor Bayliss admits he is still vexed by the issue of who will open the batting with Alastair Cook on their tour of the United Arab Emirates following the one-day series with Australia.England succumbed to an eight-wicket defeat at Old Trafford in the fifth ODI on Sunday as Australia sealed a 3-2 series victory in emphatic fashion.Nottinghamshire opener Alex Hales has been heavily touted for the role, but he failed the rehearsal with just 53 runs in the five matches at an average of 10.60 and a top score of 10.60.Yorkshires Adam Lyth struggled during the Ashes and averages only 20.38 in his seven Test matches as an opening batsman.Bayliss agreed that who partners Test captain Cook at the top of the order very much remains a tricky issue for him to contend with. One of the things is theres no one out there putting their hand up saying Im definitely the player to pick, Bayliss said.Theres a number of good players who have had ok seasons. I dont think there is anyone who has made five, six, seven hundreds. If someone had done that you would be putting them in the team straight away. Theres a bit of message there and an opportunity for county players that these coming months and next season that there places available and spots up for grabs.Bayliss refused to close the door on both Lyth and Hales even though neither player has done enough to secure the spot for certain.Im sure Adam will be spoken about, Bayliss added. Its a tough season to come in. He played well against New Zealand so he can obviously play. And I think Australias bowling attack in the Ashes, theres not too many better in the world. So Im sure hell definitely be spoken about also. You like to see them in form whatever style of cricket they are playing. Alex (Hales) have had a reasonably good Championship season so Im sure he will be spoken about quite highly at the selection meeting. The tourists eased to victory with 25.4 overs to spares thanks to Aaron Finchs unbeaten 70.All-rounder Mitchell Marsh had earlier picked up four for 27 as England were dismissed for just 138 in 33 overs with Ben Stokes (42) and Adil Rashid (35 not out) the only players to trouble the Australia attack.Australia captain Steve Smith was relieved to end his sides tour on a high point after they relinquished the Ashes last month as attention turned to their tour of Bangladesh later this month. Its very satisfying, Smith added. We only had four players left from the World Cup-winning side. Its pleasing to win a series away from home. Its been a terrific tour, and Ive enjoyed every minute. Im looking forward to everything ahead of me now.Im a bit tired to be perfectly honest so Im looking forward to 10 days at home before we go to Bangladesh. Its going to be a big challenge. Its going to be a tough tour in Bangladesh.Hopefully the guys can prepare well. Im not sure of the makeup of the team, there may well be a few young guys in the squad. Some guys are coming in looking to make a path for themselves.

Tennis: Hingis and Mirza win US Open women's doubles title

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - Wimbledon champions Martina Hingis and Sania Mirza captured their second consecutive Grand Slam womens doubles crown Sunday, defeating Casey Dellacqua and Yaroslava Shvedova 6-3, 6-3 in the US Open final.Indias Mirza and Swiss veteran Hingis did not drop a set in becoming the first top-seeded duo to win the US Open womens doubles title since Cara Black and Liezel Huber won the 2008 crown. It has been a great year for us, Mirza said. To win Wimbledon was a great year. Then to come back and back it up to win the US Open, we feel like were a really solid team. And we came through again today. Hingis also won the mixed doubles alongside a partner from India, mens doubles veteran Leander Paes.It was the 11th career Grand Slam doubles title for Hingis, 34, who has won four Australian Opens (1997, 1998, 1999, 2002), two French Opens (1998, 2000), three at Wimbledon (1996, 1998, 2015) and two on the New York hardcourts in 1998 with Jana Novotna and this year.Hingis, who hit a backhand volley winner to break for the win after 70 minutes, won 14 matches in a row when she began playing alongside Mirza in March, taking titles at Indian Wells, Miami and Charleston before the streak ended in the Rome final. From the start, we hit it off, Hingis said. Our games work well together.Mirza, the world doubles number one at 28, won her only prior Slam womens doubles title with world doubles number two Hingis in July at the All England Club.Australian left-hander Dellacqua, 30, had been seeking her first Grand Slam doubles crown but settles for a sixth runner-up showing, including the 2013 US and Australian Opens and Wimbledon plus the 2008 and 2015 French Opens.Kazak Shvedova, 28, owns two major womens doubles titles from 2010 at Wimbledon and the US Open. She delayed her wedding so she could play in the final.I will be flying home tomorrow, landing home Tuesday, getting married Wednesday and then flying to another tournament, Shvedova said. To my American family, save my bachelorette party for later.Hingis was also the US Open doubles runner-up last year alongside Italys Flavia Pennetta, who won her first Grand Slam singles crown Saturday by beating compatriot Roberta Vinci in the singles final.Mirza and Hingis have reached finals in six of 12 tournaments together while Dellacqua and Shvedova have made four finals from seven pairings since partnering in May.It has been great, Dellacqua said. Slava and I get along well off the court. Our games complement each other. The more we keep playing together the more we will improve.

Football: Guarin fires Inter top as Balotelli returns to fray

Posted:

MILAN (AFP) - A Fredy Guarin piledriver fired Inter Milan two points clear at the top of Serie A with a 1-0 win over AC Milan, for whom Mario Balotelli made his second debut on Sunday.Having failed to qualify for Europe this season, both Milan giants are desperate to make up for years of underachiement -- and on this performance may now fancy their chances of a top finish, especially given Juventuss early season woes.Inter now sit two points clear of Chievo with a maximum nine points although Roma, also on seven points, are the Nerazzurris more notable challengers. Champions Juventus, with two losses and a draw so far, are down in 16th, eight points off the pace as they endure their worst start to a season in living memory.Milan started well, they had us in difficulty at times but it wasnt enough, said Inter coach Roberto Mancini. In the end, we deserved the win, but Milan are a good side and they will be battling for a top finish. Juventus as well.Thats the beauty of football, Juventus havent won in three games but Im sure they will get back to being protagonists soon enough.Milan coach Sinisa Mihajlovic had only praise for his team, but lamented their failure to pull level. We didnt deserve to lose. We played well, tried to win and all we lacked was a goal, said Mihajlovic.Im happy, Im proud and the lads can hold their heads high. Its by playing like this that we can start to look at how well we can do in the league.Milan shaded a lively opening half in which Carlos Bacca and Luiz Adriano kept the Nerazzurri defence on their toes, home keeper Samir Handanovic notably saving at Adrianos feet early on, while on-loan Manchster City forward Stevan Jovetic drilled just wide of Diego Lopezs post at the other end.In the last six league derbies neither side had scored more than one goal and the near capacity crowd of 79,154 fans almost saw Milan break the deadlock when Adriano blazed over while under pressure after latching on to Baccas neat pass.Inter were looking nervous, and Milan almost capitalised. When Giacomo Bonaventura countered on 19 minutes, his pinpoint pass found Adriano but the Brazilian was blocked by Juan Jesus as he was about to pull the trigger. On the stroke of half-time, Milan breathed a sigh of relief when Lopez produced a wonderful reflex save to deny striker Mauro Icardi from close range.Jovetic produced Inters first chance of the second half after a poor Lopez clearance, but the Argentinians effort was blocked by a Milan boot.Milan began to build momentum again but on the counter Inter proved dangerous. An Ivan Perisic ball from the left flank caused confusion and Lopez tipped Guarins bouncing header over the bar.The Spanish goalkeeper was finally beaten when Milans defence fatally backed off and allowed Guarin to unleash a drive that beat Lopez at his far corner for his 15th Serie A goal on his 100th league appearance.Mihajlovic immediately replaced Bacca with Balotelli, the former Inter strikers arrival prompting a deafening chorus of boos that quietened when the on-loan Liverpool forward whipped in a free-kick that went dangerously close to Handanovics far post. Defender Alex Telles made his Inter debut when he replaced Jesus and, moments later, he did well to block Hondas cross from the right, while at the other end Abate intervened in timely fashion to block Icardis effort on goal from Davide Santons nicely weighted pass.Balotelli, however, was making an impact, notably shaving the outside of Handanovics post from outside the area with 12 minutes left on the clock.Minutes later he won a free kick from a challenge by Guarin, and from 35 yards drove just wide of the upright.Mancini responded by replacing Perisic with defender Andtea Ranocchia with five minutes to play and Inter hung on to claim city bragging rights.

Football: Xavi makes triumphant Qatar league debut

Posted:

DOHA (AFP) - His last competitive match was in front of more than 70,000 fans but Xavi Hernandez made his Qatar Stars League debut on Sunday watched by a crowd of just 2,253.For a former world player of the year who has won 28 trophies, including the World Cup, two European Championships, and whose last performance for Barcelona was in Junes Champions League victory, a sweaty night in downtown Doha may not have seemed like one of the most spectacular nights of a glittering career. For Xavis new team though, Al Sadd, it was a perfect start to the season, winning 4-0 away in a one-sided clash against newly-promoted Mesaimeer, emphasising their determination to go one better than second place last season.Afterwards, he brushed aside questions about himself, declaring only that the result mattered. It was positive to win, said Xavi.We had a lot of chances, we have a good team and play good football. His new team even have a good chance of adding to his large collection of medals and winning the league, he added. But the three points aside and however humble he stayed, the match was largely about one thing: Xavi. The QSLs most high-profile and expensive signing had drawn a disparate crowd of football fans among Qatars large expatriate population from as far afield as Burkina Faso, Uganda, Iran, Kenya, Ethiopia, Nepal as well as many locals. Its my first time watching a match here but I came because of Xavi. I support Barcelona, Sadat, a 29-year-old Ugandan who works in the Gulf as a security guard told AFP. It is my first time to see him play.Sitting close by among a noisy bank of fans -- some singing, some banging drums, others watching intently while snacking on sunflower seeds at the Al-Araby stadium -- was Arrisala, a 23-year-old from Mombasa. He too had come watch to the Catalan playmaker. We are happy to be here, its very exciting, he said. We want to see all the good players in Qatar. The crowd did not have to wait long to cheer their hero.Xavi earned his first assist in the QSL in the 11th minute, floating a free kick onto the head of Jung Soo Lee to put Al Sadd a goal ahead.Their lead was never in doubt and they were so dominant that Al Sadds goalkeeper, Saad Abdulla Aldosari, who had so little to do he could have been added to the official attendance figure, even shunned an official water break in the second half as the temperature reached 36 degrees Celsius (97 farenheit).Wearing his trademark number six but in unfamiliar white and black, Xavis best spell came just after the second half, when he went close with a free-kick, a header and then one of his trademark defence-splitting passes, presented Musab Keder Kamal with an easy chance. But the right-bank fluffed his big moment and pushed his shot into the side netting. It mattered little. The game was won and the crowd won over. When he went to take a corner in the dying minutes, the crowd started chanting, Xavi Xavi XaviHe waved and they cheered some more.Xavi, who is on a two year contract, is not the first big name to play in the domestic league of the 2022 World Cup hosts as Qatar tries to raise its footballing profile.Real Madrids Raul also played for Al Sadd and current managers include Gianfranco Zola. But that has left Qatari crowds wanting even more big names.Iranian English teacher Ali, watching on with his son in a Barcelona shirt said he wanted to watch Messi or Neymar. It is one of my dreams seeing Xavi play here, so maybe I can dream of other players, he said.

Motorcycling: Marquez wins thrilling San Marino GP as Rossi blows it

Posted:

SAN MARINO (AFP) - Hondas world champion Marc Marquez of Spain won an enthralling San Marino MotoGP on Sunday as Yamahas Valentino Rossi blew his chances with tactical errors and teammate Jorge Lorenzo crashed out. Marquezs move to switch to slick tyres on a drying Misano circuit after rain led to his fourth win of the season in front of British duo Bradley Smith (Yamaha) and Scott Redding (Honda). The bike was moving about and I thought it was time to change as the track was drying out and it was new asphalt, said Marquez. Its nice to be here again on the podium and victory was our target so Im very happy, added the Spaniard who becomes the first Honda rider to win at San Marino since compatriot Dani Pedrosa in 2010. Championship leader Rossis army of home fans looked on in bewilderment as the nine-time world champion failed to make the switch from wet tyres to slicks with seven laps to go, when he was in the lead, handing the race to Marquez. The Doctor eventually settled for fifth place but it was still a successful day as Lorenzos crash meant Rossi extended his championship lead to 23 points over his Yamaha teammate with Marquez now 63pts back with five races to go.Its true that the championship is a lot more important than winning this race, its the main target, said Rossi.Unfortunately Jorge crashed and I was able to gain another 11points. This is good for the championship, but its a shame to miss out on the podium, because I wanted to arrive in the top three in front of all the spectators.Redding rode a remarkable race after dumping his bike in the dirt only to get back up and finish third, the first time two British riders had finished on the podium since 1979. Smith, 24, who made the brave decision to stay on slick tyres for much of the race was rewarded with his best ever result in MotoGP. I went one lap, then two laps (on slicks) but I just kept saying luck favours the brave, luck favours the brave, luck favours the brave and all the others were making two pit stops but I never expected to be on the podium, said the Oxford rider whose best previous finish in the highest category was third in Australia in 2014. Lorenzo took the early lead with Marquez and Rossi in hot pursuit but just minutes into the race rain began to fall on the freshly laid new track which forced the field to scramble for a switch of bikes and wet tyres. The leading trio pitted together and swiftly hopped onto new bikes but it was Marquez who took advantage and went into the lead as they came back out with 20 laps to go. With 15 laps to race and the track drying out, Lorenzo and Rossi blew past Marquez as the Spaniard inexplicably looked behind him, much to the delight of the fans who went wild at the sight of the Italian moving into contention for back-to-back wins for the first time since 2009. The two Yamahas then began to pull away from Marquez but Rossi again turned the race upside down with a daring overtake with 12 laps to go as he took the outright lead for the first time. However, Rossi stayed out on the track too long and with Marquez on faster tyres, he quickly caught the Italian when the Yamaha rider finally came into the pits and relinquished the lead for good. Johann Zarco won the Moto2 race, extending his lead in the championship, with Enea Bastianini winning the Moto3 event.

They believed in what was possible and I dedicate this victory to them, my family and my children.Aru trailed Dutch rider Tom Dumoulin by six seconds going into the penultimate stage. But, with the aid of his Astana teammates, Aru finally broke the Dutch riders resistance on the final two category one climbs of the race as Dumoulin slipped down to sixth.Yesterday was the most important moment, added Aru.It was really emotional, we did an amazing job as a teamDumoulins Giant-Alpecin teammate Degenkolb won four stages at last years Vuelta, but had been frustrated in the few stages suited to the sprinters. However, despite his efforts in helping Dumoulin over the past three weeks, he had enough in the tank to sprint to the line ahead of Dutch rider Danny van Poppel and Luxembourgs Jean-Pierre Drucker. It really means a lot, said Degenkolb. For the whole team we had a big disappointment yesterday. The whole world saw that we were trying to defend this jersey and make it a superb success for the team.It is like going to zero to 100 emotionally and now we can go home with a positive feeling. We still had an awesome Vuelta to finish sixth in the general classification and winning three stages. For us it is a great Vuelta.Dumoulin also admitted that Degenkolbs win softened the blow of his personal disappointment. He worked so hard for me in the last three weeks and he made efforts that maybe other sprinters wouldnt do, he said.I am really happy that he won and that we helped him today. I cannot be unhappy today it is a really nice end of the Vuelta.Majka was another young rider to impress as he made the most of his opportunity to lead Tinkoff-Saxo in the absence of last years Vuelta winner Alberto Contador. After the Tour de France it is not easy to be the leader but I had the opportunity and I took it.I hope to keep improving. First we have Alberto Contador, I need to still learn and maybe for the future continue to get better.
